SUMMER 2018 › WELCOME

WELCOME TO FERNIE, BC BY KRISTA TURCASSO

EMILY PARK PHOTO

Hello, and thank you for choosing this guide to help you in learning more about Fernie! This piece was built with you in mind, providing as much of a local’s perspective as possible and exposing you to the best this mountain town has on offer. We happen to think this area is pretty spectacular, and have a feeling it won’t be long before you do too. ››› Fernie is the only city class municipality in Canada that is fully encircled by the Rocky Mountains. The town itself is situated on a glacial valley, with views on all sides of Mount Fernie, Mount Klauer, The Three Sisters, Mount Proctor, Mount Hosmer, Fernie Ridge, Morrissey Ridge and the epic Lizard Range, where the famous Fernie Alpine Resort (formally Fernie Snow Valley) draws people from around the world. While originally known for coal mining, and then as a first-rate ski town, Fernie has seen a significant increase in tourism during the summer months. In 2017, retailers lining the Historic Downtown experienced more than a

25% increase on their best season to date… some even doubled that number! If you have ever spent a summer in Fernie, you most likely aren’t surprised – it is a glorious time of year in this beautiful corner of BC. But for those of you new to Fernie, let me elaborate. Winter here is epic. So epic, it typically begins in fall and runs right through spring. This year was a lot like that, with eleven metres of snowfall blanketing the valley. When the sun starts to shine, and the days get longer and warmer, it’s as though everyone is shaken out of a powder-induced haze. Suddenly, everyone is acutely aware and excited about the world around them.

The barbeques, bikes, golf clubs, trail shoes and fishing rods are dusted off. Plans begin to unfold for the upcoming months of outdoor adventures, camps, festivals and socializing. It’s such a rejuvenating time, and our love for it and all that it brings shines through the continually evolving and growing amenities found here. Word has spread about the magic of summer in Fernie; the distinctive lifestyle, unprecedented recreational opportunities, and the unique mix of culture, history, shopping and dining. And while at times we may seem a little shy, still getting used to this attention, you will quickly find that we are

NICK NAULT PHOTO fiercely proud and invested in this community and happy to share this with you! It’s been pretty cool to see over the years how this vibe is passed along to those who visit or have made Fernie home. It really struck me last fall, when Olympian Catharine Pendrel and national athlete Sandra Walter spent a weekend riding here and absolutely fell in love with Fernie and its trails. These two travel the world competing for Canada on their mountain bikes, and they were adamant that Fernie has some of the best trails in the world. If that’s not perspective, I don’t know what is! And that’s just one element of the Fernie mix. So, a huge and genuine welcome to you. We might be small, but we are mighty therefore we suggest preparing yourself to be happily surprised by all that is coming your way.

SUMMER 2018 › RECREATION

RECREATION It’s no surprise that Fernie is host to a growing number of indoor and outdoor activities that increasingly draw recreational enthusiasts of all backgrounds and interests. Dedicated individuals and organizations work towards enhancing this attractive quality of Fernie, realizing what an asset it has become for residents and visitors alike. On any given summer day the options are truly endless, especially with the longer hours of sunshine. It’s not uncommon to start the day with a trail run or bike ride, and after a day’s work head for a round of golf or disc golf, perhaps finishing off with a cool dip in your favourite swimming hole… and that’s for those that have to work! Imagine the possibilities on a weekend or while on vacation.

FERNIE WILDERNESS ADVENTURES I grew up fishing in the Elk River and was a ski racer back in the day. As a racer, I always said that one day I would make a living from skiing. Racing didn’t turn out the way I hoped it would. I started working at the mine, became captain of the rescue team, and also worked for the City as a volunteer fire fighter. Rescue work became one of my four passions, along with hunting, fishing, and skiing. The skills and knowledge I learned from rescue work and my love for the outdoors provided me with the confidence that led me on my path to starting Fernie Wilderness Adventures (FWA) in 1986. Starting with a small staff of five people, FWA now has a staff of 25 during the winter season with several year round employees. It’s been rewarding to have long-term employees, some who have been with us close to 20 years. Although the business is challenging at times (weather!), the rewards of seeing smiling faces on our clients makes it all worthwhile. Business has changed over the years, as the tourism sector has seen growth. With all the recreational, mining and logging activities in our area, this proves all these industries can co-exist. Q. Best way to end a Fernie summer day… A. Go to Yamagoya.

SUBMITTED PHOTO Q. Fernie stands out as a mountain town because… A. Of all the amazing outdoor activities and adventures you can take advantage of.

Q. When in Fernie, don’t miss… A. All the things you can do with too short of a stay.

KICKING IT OLD SCHOOL THREE ROUTES TO RIDE THIS SUMMER BY KRISTA TURCASSO

Trying to decide what and where to ride in Fernie can be overwhelming at first. The trail network is expansive, there are numerous areas to ride, and a variety of trail types. So, where does one start? ››› Here are my picks for this summer, with a little something for everyone. Feeling a bit nostalgic for some of our original trails, I’m kicking it old school and hope you like the selection! Enjoy these Fernie classics, and remember ride don’t slide, go through puddles and not around, avoid trails that are too wet, and show your appreciation by getting a Trail Supporter Pass or FMBC Membership! “Old School” continued on next page NICK NAULT PHOTO

S RIDGEMONT CRUISE

MOUNT FERNIE

PROVINCIAL PARK

A good place to start and test out some classic trails. Start by climbing Sidewinder, and connect to the Eco-terrorist boardwalks. From here, you can either add the Kid’s Stuff loop, or head straight to Splitting Bears. About half way, you have the choice to take Hessian or Splitting Bears. Go left, and enjoy the revitalized Hessian with some optional features! Once back on Ridgemont Road, take the short climb up to Space Unicorns and enjoy this last fun descent.

Mount Fernie offers great rewards for your work! In both its descents and views. This route includes one of Fernie’s original trails – Stove Trail. Accessed on the right side of the camping area, this climb has been revitalized making it a great option for all levels. Once at the top, turn left and climb the powerline until you reach a plateau. You’ll see the trail on your right, climb the remaining short distance to the top of Brokeback and enjoy a super fun descent, and then take the Lazy Lizard Connector back to the campground.

The Park offers some technical riding, the ground is soft, the trees are dense, and it can feel as though you are deep into the forest, away from it all. Pass through the campground and continue along the road until you see a parking area on your left. Take the Gorby Bridge across Lizard Creek and climb Gorby until you see Old Goat on your left. Climb up Old Goat, continue on Mega Hurtz until you reach View Trail road. Turn right, pass the Haul Back at the ski hill and continue climbing until you reach the top of Verboten. Enjoy the technical descent and some fast sections, finishing back at Gorby trail where you can come back the way you came or take Sherwoody to the campground.

Level: Green/Blue Distance: 5.5-13.5km Estimated Time: 1.5-2.5 hours

Options to Lengthen: Head up on Cemetery Bypass, Kiddie Up, Queen V and Broken Derailleur, and down Oh Dear, finishing right where you started.

Level: Blue/Black Distance: 7-12.5km Estimated Time: 1.5-3 hours

Option to Lengthen: Climb back up Hedonism off the Connector, turn right at the powerline to Mushroom Head and climb up and over to Red Sonja, for another fun and flowy descent that allows you to avoid the highway and finish in town.

Level: Blue/Black Distance: 7-10.5km Estimated Time: 1.5-2.5 hours

Option to Lengthen: Before hitting Verboten, take Snakebite, climb back up Gorby then hit Verboten. A great, old school Fernie route!

NEW AND EXCITING TRAILS TO EXPLORE

SUMMER 2018 › RECREATION

BY TRAIL AMBASSADORS ROSS, PETE AND TERRY Once you’ve kicked it old school or have spent countless hours exploring the trail network in Fernie, you might want to check out what’s new in town. Who wouldn’t? The Fernie Trails Alliance has completed some amazing projects over the last couple of years, with more on the horizon. Here are three new trails to discover, with descriptions from the individuals who put the blood, sweat and tears into getting these trails on the map. ››› CONTRA – FERNIE’S FLOW TRAIL by Ross Roseingrave

Contra is Fernie’s new flow trail, currently under construction on the west side of Riffle Range Ridge. Trail completion is expected early this summer, and will be approximately 1.4 km in length. Contra is the missing piece to Fernie’s mountain bike trail network. Designed to give riders of all abilities a safe, exciting ride focused on progression. With little pedalling or braking required, riders will navigate over rollers, jumps, and berms, and will have multiple line choices available to maximise their experience. Additionally, the Lizard Range is visible along the entire route, offering the perfect backdrop for this action packed trail. There are two popular routes that can be used for access, based on your preference. Riders of all abilities can climb through Ridgemont, via Kiddy-Up, Queen-V, Kids Stuff, to Rifle Range Road taking Spur 3 to the trailhead. For those looking for more of a challenging climb, head up the FloWrkr trail, where your patience will be rewarded with a contrasting descent.

FLOWRKR

by Pete Eaton FloWrkr was conceived as a return to original Fernie technical XC singletrack combined with modern design concepts such as stacked loops and maximizing trail length within a minimal environmental footprint. Most recent new trails in the Fernie area have been beginner trails to fill a definite need, but the evil masterminds of FloWrkr envisioned a new kind of hand-built expert XC trail to add to the amazing diversity of trails in Fernie. FloWrkr is not a “get efficiently from Point A to Point B” trail; rather it is a steep, tight, twisty, punchy and heinous endeavour. Strong XC riders tend to love it, others not so much. Trail construction has been a collaborative effort with amazing support from the community, local bike shops and other trail enthusiasts. Two and a half sections of the six sections of FloWrkr were built in 2017, with the remaining sections planned to be completed this year. The stacked loop concept will allow users to mix and match the six sections to suit their suffering. Parts 1 and 2 are 2.7km, once completed FloWrkr will be 7km in length.

100 YEARS OF GOLF

SUMMER 2018 › RECREATION

BY MAX SHERWOOD

PHOTOS COURTESY OF FERNIE AND DISTRICT HISTORICAL SOCIETY courses in the province. A few years later a new clubhouse, maintenance building and golf cart house were built, at a more central location to complete the course facilities. No longer a true country club, the name of the organization has returned to its roots as the Fernie Golf Club.

The Fernie Golf Club has been an iconic amenity in the region for both residents and visitors since 1918 – marking 100 years this summer. Known for its incredible views, mountain setting and playability, this course has something to offer all players. A par 70 course playing 6,556 yards long from the back tees, the Fernie Golf Club is rated in the top 25 of BC’s courses. Originally, the Fernie Golf Club was located at Prentice Park, where today youth enjoy playing soccer. This land, owned by the Crow’s Nest Pass Coal Company, was provided for the first few holes. Early success was in large part due to the hard work and dedication of the Club’s volunteer members, much like it is today. By 1921, as interest and members increased so did the number of holes. Nine additional holes were developed, and a reclaimed sawmill became the first clubhouse located where the golf cart house currently sits. Grass fairways were maintained with a horsedrawn roller, and the greens made from mixes of sand, sawdust, and oil collected from local garages. The Club had a greens keeper, who received $100 per year and lived rent-free in the clubhouse.

In 1928, the Club joined forces with the tennis club and was renamed the Fernie Golf and Country Club. This same year, the Ladies Club joined the organization. After a rough patch financially from the 1930s to the 1950s, the Club saw extensive upgrades starting in 1968 with the construction and planting of new grass greens, piping for underground sprinkling systems, realigning holes and in 1972, a new clubhouse that included a pro shop and maintenance building, built at the end of 2nd Ave where the Bright Beginnings Preschool currently resides. Having an 18-hole course was always a dream for the Club and its members. With the help of local businesses, government grants and a bank loan, this was made possible in 1986! Golfers were now able to experience one of the most beautiful 18-hole

In celebration of its impressive history, and to celebrate all who have been a part of making this community asset what it has been and has grown to become today, the Club is hosting a week-long centennial celebration this July. This week includes special events for the house leagues, as well as an Open House on July 7. Fernie Golf Club members and staff will be dressed in historical golf attire, and act as your tour guides through historic displays showing the evolution of the club from its 1918 roots. Free activities include golf games to introduce children and adults to the sport, as well as a BBQ where builders and developers will be honoured. The Fernie Golf Club has also announced free memberships this season for juniors, in the tradition of introducing the sport to new golfers and celebrating its Centennial. Visit golffernie.com for more information and for details on the special 100-year celebration events throughout the season.

SUMMER 2018 › RECREATION

TAKE A DIP BY JESSE BELL

Oh, I love that summer feeling. When the sun stays up late, and going barefoot is the walk of life. When an afternoon bevy turns into an evening beer, turns into a late night dance and a bike ride home, with the warm breeze flickering between my hair. Summer is the best time of year. ››› JESSE BELL PHOTO But man, oh man, can it ever get hot. Last year’s summer was so sweltering the backcountry closed. Fires burned, trees died. The air was so humid and smoky it was hard to want anything but water (or sangria). The only way to find a moment of reprieve, a little respite, was to take a dip. Anywhere, anywhere possible. Immediately. Three blocks from my house runs the Elk River, and though the river’s levels turned low and the shoreline grew, the water stayed fresh, and I stayed cool. If this summer scorches the way it did last year, you might be redesigning your days to include a refreshing dip. Here are just a few select places to make doing so possible. Though, you might have to work for them. If you’re up for the challenge, Lizard Lake is a sweet reward at the end of a two-hour hike. Find the trailhead from either the Gorby Bridge or lower Island Lake parking lot. The trail’s steep and not for the faint of heart, but Lizard Lake’s surrounded with Indian Paintbrushes, and after feeling flushed with the ascent, is the perfect mountain dip. Beware of mosquitos though, they’re feisty, and remember to make lots of noise. We ran

into a male grizzly bear here who kept us humble. If nearer to town is your jam, the Elk River has some easy-access shoreline. Set up a lawn chair and lounge for the day. There’s also a great swim hole behind the Fernie Golf Club. A sandy beach with water deep enough to dunk, perfect for a post-softball or dike-bike. Or, if you prefer a little thrill, buy a boat and float the river. From bridge to the boat launch at the west-end of town is my preferred after-work route. Just be sure to check river conditions before setting sail—log jams and other hazards exist. A half-hour out of town lies Burton Lake, a round and deep-green lake in a small enclave you might miss if you blink for too long. Perfect for a shady picnic and cool-down, Burton is superb early summer. Nearby Surveyor’s Lake is another option, where you can spend the afternoon looking for lake turtles and sunbathing. For a more beachy vibe head to the Koocanusa Campsite & Marina. Turn left off Hwy. 3 onto Kikomun Newgate Rd. just after the 3&93 Dairy Bar (ps they have deep-fried

pickles here.) The marina has a beautiful sandy beach, and is equipped with floating docks, boats, hot dogs, hamburgers and ice cream. Sometimes the girls just need a day at the beach. Further outside town and along a committing hike is Cliff Lake. So cold it’ll take your breath away, Cliff Lake sits in a glorious bowl in the high-alpine. Drive the Bull River Forest Service Rd. until the 32 km marker, and turn left onto Van Creek Rd. Follow to the 41 km marker and park roadside. The hike involves some technical rock ascent adjacent to a waterfall, but is worth every step. There’s no greater feeling than meeting with a fresh water, stripping to your skivvies, and diving in. This summer, however you choose to enjoy it, I challenge you to find your own perfect place to take a dip. Just remember; wherever you happen upon your solace from the sun, be sure to leave these sacred (and secret) places as you find them—pack out what you pack in, and maybe even a little extra. Savour that summer feeling. Goodness knows it won’t be around for long.

FLY FISHING IN FERNIE IS FOR EVERYONE BY PAUL SAMYCIA

There has been a drastic change to fly-fishing over the last five years which has made it a sport for everyone to partake in. ››› and along gravel bars that create riffles in the water are good places to start. As one gets better at casting, more accurate fly presentations can be made close to logjams and other river structures. Keep in mind that wading above your knees is unnecessary as many of the cutthroat trout will hold in very shallow water. Take the time to watch the river and look for rising fish before casting. Spotting the fish before they are spooked can be a sure way to entice a fish to eat your fly.

With new affordable technology and social media promoting the sport, people of all ages and personalities are showing interest in fly-fishing. Recent seasons have seen children, women, hipsters, ski bums, and entire families out on the riverbanks being entertained by another great Fernie pastime for the summer months. The local fly shops have embraced the growth in the sport by having cost-effective gear readily available and providing how-to information, lessening the learning curve for those starting out. The trend towards catch and release and the fact that the Elk River is one of the best fly-fishing trout waters in North America has increased the probability of catching fish, making it a sustainable, and enjoyable, summer time activity. The easiest way to get into the sport is to pick up a starter fly-fishing kit. Starter packages with good warranties begin at approximately $220, and if you’re a fair weather fisher, the need for expensive waders and wading boots is not necessary. Until you become addicted to the sport and start fishing the inclement weather, many of the expensive items can be put on hold. Once a rod and a few flies are in hand, the simplest way to learn is to start dry-fly fishing using large attractor flies. Such flies as the Chernobyl Ant and the Fat Albert can be found at your local fly shops. Fishing these big dry flies that float on the surface entice eager native west slope cutthroat trout to take your presentation. Just watching the fish rise up from the bottom of the river in the clear waters and eat your floating fly is enough to create an addiction to the sport.

about $54 per season for an adult and it is free for kids under sixteen. For non-BC residents, on top of their freshwater fishing license, a daily-classified waters license is required which will cost $21 per day. When compared to other activities popular here, it is quite affordable.

Fishing in British Columbia requires a freshwater fishing license that can be purchased online at fishing.gov.bc.ca or at the local fly shops. To fish the Elk River you will also need the classified waters license. For BC-residents the total cost of this is

Once a person is equipped with license and gear there are many easily accessible fishing spots along the Elk River. In town by the Fernie boat launch, the east Fernie bridge, and along the Annex Park is plenty of good fish habitat. Inside bends of the river

Learning to cast can be a challenge for younger children, but many of them find joy in just watching others fish. An adult who can hook a fish and let the younger one reel it in or net it can make a kid’s day. The Elk River Alliance sells an excellent river access map at local stores and fly shops (also available in this guide in the MAP section) and the money from these sales help support their cause. What we do on the water is reflected in the quality and quantity of fish we catch. Simple regulations to follow are using single, barbless hooks and practicing catch and release. Fish handling plays a huge role in post–catch survival so minimize fight time, use rubber nets, and avoid prolonged air exposure. Handle fish gently and keep in mind that fingers and gills don’t mix. Keep Em’ wet! BC fishing regulations are available online or where licenses are sold. Check out the local fly shops like the Elk River Guiding Company and Kootenay Fly Shop to get set up for this season, or participate in one of the Elk River Alliance’s summer programs. Visit elkriveralliance.ca for more information on what they offer, or visit the events calendar in this guide. Try your hand at fly-fishing and you will soon see why it is an activity for everyone! Paul Samycia is the Owner / Outfitter at Elk River Guiding Co.

TRICIA CLARKE

REIKI MASTER AND YOGA INSTRUCTOR Prioritizing our mental and physical health is always ideal, but often gets neglected in our busy day-to-day schedules. All of us can recall times in our life where stress and anxiety has taken over. Proven time and again, when our mind is stressed, physical ailments arise in the body and we find ourselves becoming injured and unwell. Now more then ever, people are becoming aware of this mind-body connection and are seeking new ways to help de-stress and harmonize their mind and body. Reiki and Yoga have been transformative tools that have helped me on my continuous journey of self-healing, I am here to encourage others to add these practices into their lives especially if they are serious about taking responsibility for their own health and mental wellbeing. Reiki is an ancient form of holistic healing that is gentle and simple to learn. Becoming tuned into the healing life force energy found in nature and the Universe around us. Reiki helps with sleep, digestion, pain, anxiety, mental clarity, strengthens intuition and is a regenerative way to relax and allow the body to heal. Reiki has proven to be the most effective tool I have found when it comes to self-healing. This year has been a blessing and a joy to introduce Reiki training workshops to our community. Offering Level 1 and 2 certifications designed to improve mental, physical and spiritual wellbeing to benefit the individual as well as their family and friends. It has been an honour to work together with senior yoga teachers and offer new yoga classes and workshops to

SUBMITTED PHOTO the community that include healing Reiki touch, sacred drumming and healing crystal bowls. Introducing the power of sound vibration as a tool to ignite healing on a subconscious level. The response has been incredible - people are open and willing to take charge of their mental health. Realizing the need to slow down and unwind. Now more then ever, we live in a growing conscious community open to new ideas for growth and self-care. Looking forward, I am keen to welcome new and existing clients to enjoy Reiki treatments or possibly go further and learn this technique for themselves. Inspired by all the talented and conscious individuals who already spread their light outward, and hopeful our community will welcome more health and wellness practitioners offering different techniques to expand consciousness and healing.

Q. Best way to end a Fernie summer day… A. Hiking a mountain to take in the sunset and then enjoying a bonfire under the stars. Q. Fernie stands out as a mountain town because… A. The community has such a friendly caring vibe and fun unique options for dining. Q. My favourite place to take in the view is... A. All time favourite is on top of the Three Sisters but my go to is hiking the Old Growth forest trail and taking in all the magnificent views up at Island Lake Lodge. Q. When in Fernie, don’t miss… A. Getting on your bike and trying new trails and floating down the river.

SUMMER 2018 › ARTS AND CULTURE

ARTS AND CULTURE

While summer has traditionally been more mellow than the winter season, this is definitely no longer the case. Amazing community events such as Wapiti Music Festival in August and the Wednesday Night Concert Series have drawn people to our community and have become summer staples for residents and visitors, bringing them together to enjoy food, refreshment and live entertainment. Cultural facilities such as the Fernie Museum, Heritage Library and Arts Station are hubs of entertainment, art and history and the bars and restaurants have responded to summertime demand by filling their line-up with amazing live acts regularly. And of course, there is always late-night patio socializing. While these coveted months in Fernie may be short-lived, they are lived to the fullest.

LINDEN GIGLIOTTI MUSICIAN

Hello, my name is Linden Anthony Gigliotti and I am a singer/songwriter from right here, the beautiful town of Fernie. I have been playing music since I was an awkward preteen and loving it ever since. I began by playing heavy metal guitar but as the years went by, I calmed down and started writing acoustic music. I got involved in the arts and culture sector of town simply by seeking out the open mic and jam nights. These were the places that taught me so very much about performing and playing music with other people. To this day, at all of the local jams, there is no shortage of fantastic talent and people to learn from. It’s because of this impressive yet welcoming atmosphere that Fernie has one of the most inspiring and accepting music scenes around in my opinion. Everyone is always supportive and super stoked to hear what you do and what you’re currently working on and since I have become involved, I’ve only seen the music scene continue to grow with no signs of stopping. That’s the cool thing about living in a ski town like Fernie - we are so fortunate to have people from all over the world pop by and share their talents. Love it. Something I would like to see evolve is the outdoor show opportunities during the summer months. Be it house shows or get-togethers in the parks, we have such a phenomenal landscape and I find it can be

THE EBB AND FLOW OF A RIVERSIDE POPULATION BY REBECCA HALL

COAL CREEK TOWNSITE, ALL PHOTOS COURTESY OF FERNIE AND DISTRICT HISTORICAL SOCIETY

Fernie now sits proudly as the largest community on the Elk River, but it wasn’t always the only town of significance at this end of the valley. ››› In 1907, The Canadian Pacific Railway began work on a new mine and support buildings at Hosmer to the tune of $1.5 million. By 1910, Hosmer had a population of over 1,200 people and was a thriving community with a bright future. Hosmer’s Company Town subdivision consisted of 63 nearly identical singlestorey houses built in orderly rows, each with access to electricity and water, and rents starting at $7 per month. This section on the east side of the tracks also had company offices, six substantial homes for management, a boarding house, a hospital and a church. On the west side of the tracks, the Elk Valley Development company sold

building lots obtained from the Crow’s Nest Pass Coal Company. A commercial district spanned seven blocks and boasted four hotels, more churches, restaurants, several grocery merchants, clothing and drug stores, legal offices, trades and services, a newspaper office, a four-room school, an opera house, brothels, a post office, police, and a bank. Little New York was a ramshackle neighbourhood – sanctioned by the Mine Company – of around 25 dwellings built by community’s poorest workers around the coke ovens. Just weeks before the outbreak of WWI in June 1914, the CPR unexpectedly announced that the Hosmer Mine would

cease production immediately, citing the downturn of the coal markets and unsatisfactory returns. The closure instantly plunged the community into despair and by the end of 1914, Hosmer was a virtual ghost town. Today, Hosmer endures as home to around 150 people. Explore the imposing remains of the power house, coke ovens, and cemetery on a self-guided tour. The town of Coal Creek to the east of Fernie is believed to have had around half the population of Hosmer. However, despite the devastating explosion of 1902 in which 128 miners perished, it enjoyed a much longer lifespan. It was one of the first mines established in the area in 1897;

SUMMER 2018 › ARTS AND CULTURE

BANK OF MONTREAL, HOSMER

coal production finally ceased in 1958. The bustling community was served by the Morrissey-Fernie-Michel Railway, passenger and freight trains departed approximately every two hours. Despite the cultural-sounding divisions of Welsh Camp, Slav Town, Bosses Row, Morrissey Cottages and French Camp, by the 1930’s, the majority of Coal Creekers were Scottish and English. Life was very social, with public dances lasting until three am and an orchestra for entertainment. Sports played an important role; the town boasted a football field, open-air hockey rink and a natural swimming pool created by diverting part of the creek. Several well-known soccer and hockey teams made their home in Coal Creek; the Mine Company were keen to encourage activities that kept workers away from the ‘demon drink.’ The well-stocked Trites Wood Company Store answered to most domestic needs while Fernie was just a 30-minute train ride away. The town also had three churches, a three-room schoolhouse and the popular Coal Creek Literacy and Athletic Association clubhouse which featured a bar and library. A few residents lingered after mine operations ceased but it wasn’t long before the town was abandoned and now very little remains; a wildfire razed most structures the same year that the mine closed. To explore the history, follow the 8km Coal Creek Heritage Trail from the Fernie Aquatic Centre. A series of interpretive panels, scattered remnants, a sulphur spring and dilapidated remains along the way evoke memories of the lost community.

An epic view of Fernie Alpine Resort on the Lizard Range takes your breath away as you walk from shop to shop, enjoying cafés and restaurants and socializing along the way completing the experience. PAUL ARCOITE

URBAN SETTLERS In the early 2000’s my wife and I began spending holiday time in Fernie. Like many people who have moved here, we fell in love with this charming mountain town, and the abundance of recreational opportunities. We started building a “vacation home” in 2007, and as the house came close to completion we decided we should move from Vancouver and make Fernie our full-time home. With two young children and a puppy in tow, and a home that was not quite ready for us, it was a little chaotic. After a few years living in Fernie, we began looking for business opportunities in our new hometown. I had been operating The Urban Settler in Vancouver for close to 20 years, working in interior design and manufacturing for commercial and hospitality clients. It was apparent that there was a need in the East Kootenay region for a design-oriented home furnishings and décor store, so that was a natural path to pursue. We re-branded The Urban Settler and changed our business model to focus on residential interior design and furnishings. We were excited to move the business into the landmark Livery Building on historic Victoria Avenue, it was a perfect fit for The Urban Settler. In my opinion Fernie’s Second Avenue is one of the nicest small town retail shopping streets in Western Canada, and we are proud to be a part it. The Urban Settler is a now a lifestyle, décor, and interior design company, headquartered in Fernie, BC. We have a full ecommerce website, Urbansettler.com and ship across

SUBMITTED PHOTO Canada and the United States. We are focused on providing a high level of service to our customers; offering carefully curated products, professional interior design, and white glove delivery. In our Fernie store you’ll find customizable furnishings, sofas, lighting, rugs, hardware, artwork, bedding, mattresses, and everything else you would need to furnish your home! Q. Best way to end a Fernie summer day… A. Depending on how hot it is, either a ride up Old Goat and down Verboten, or a stand up paddle board ride from the first bridge to the Stanford boat launch.

A. I think the authenticity and heritage of this town and its genuine people are what set it apart. The view down Second Ave. towards the Lizard Range doesn’t hurt either! Q. My favourite place to take in the view is... A. At various points where our amazing trails intersect the power lines. It’s always a good opportunity to take in the views and have a break. Q. When in Fernie, don’t miss… A. The opportunities to relax, and enjoy everything this amazing place has to offer.

Q. Fernie stands out as a mountain town because…

SUMMER 2018 › FOOD AND DRINK

FOOD AND DRINK

We hear time and time again that visitors and tourists are happily surprised at the culinary options available to them in Fernie. To be honest, we’re surprised. This diversity has been building for some time, and for a small mountain community that depends on its coal mines just as much as its tourism, it’s impressive to say the least. Whatever your taste buds desire, from gourmet pizza to authentic ethnic cuisine, wholesome brunch to artisan chocolate, you will find it here and on top of the amazing dining experience, you’ll enjoy great service in a fabulous atmosphere.

WENDY LYN AND DAN WORTH HAPPY COW

We became involved in the food and beverage/hospitality industry by accident or destiny, not sure which one. We were both looking to experience living in a mountain town. I grew up in Saskatchewan and Dan in the Maritimes. We met in Jasper, AB as coworkers in the early 90’s. Our careers began with all levels of service beginning with dishwashing and house keeping and moving on to serving, bartending and management positions. After gaining experience for over a decade, we decided to open our own restaurant, in Shediac, NB. There were many challenges creating a 100 seat, fine dining restaurant, in a 100 year old historic property, in this little Acadian village. It was hard work and very rewarding. A decade later, it was time for a change. We sold our beloved restaurant, moved to beautiful Fernie and Happy Cow was born. It takes commitment, dedication and hard work to excel in this industry. It is a dynamic lifestyle with no two days playing out the same. Self-motivation is the key to success for any entrepreneur. We’ve formed some incredible relationships throughout the years with mentors, co-workers, employees and customers. What an amazing career! In most ways, the food and beverage industry has remained the same as it always has been. People want a clean environment, with friendly and knowledgeable service, at a reasonable cost. Technology has made things a little easier, a little quicker and more opportunity to reach customers directly through platforms such as FaceBook, Instagram and Twitter.

SUBMITTED PHOTO We’ve seen increased awareness and respect of ingredients. From the growing, harvesting, storing, manufacturing, packaging and end consumption of products, there should be care and thought. We as consumers get to choose. There will always be some impact on the environment, but small changes make big differences. Welcome to Fernie! Take a big breath of fresh mountain air, be present, and enjoy. Q. Best way to end a Fernie summer day… A. The best way to end a summer day in Fernie is enjoying a moment of reflection, perhaps with a cold something, while taking in the beautiful views.

Q. Fernie stands out as a mountain town because… A. It has something for everyone! Surrounded by beautiful scenery and beautiful people, from arts to athletics, there is always something cool to do and see. Q. My favourite place to take in the view is... A. One of our favourite being, the Three Sisters mountain range, from our deck. Q. When in Fernie, don’t miss… A. A treat from Happy Cow Ice Cream!

WEEKLY FINDS THIS SUMMER

BY KATIE HAMAR

WEDNESDAY CONCERT SERIES | V. CROOME PHOTO

Every day of the week, great specials are offered at Fernie’s bars and restaurants. Hop from spot to spot enjoying amazing food and drinks at discounted prices. ››› Monday Start your week off right with the Northern Bar and Stage’s $12 mussels and $5 house wine special. If you’re looking to get out of town for the evening, drive up to Island Lake Lodge for their popular Date Night Monday where you receive two entrées, two glasses of bubbly and a shared appetizer for $89 per couple. Every Monday, the Pub Bar and Grill at the Park Place Lodge hosts their local pool competition where tacos and Corona bottles are on sale. For the budget-savvy, Infinitea T-Bar offers hearty $6 meals on Mondays.

Tuesday Every Tuesday, Cirque Restaurant and Bar at Lizard Creek Lodge offers their pasta and wine special for $20. The local-favourite Burger and Beer night is featured at the Northern for $12. Tuesday is also wing night at the Pub Bar and Grill where a basket of ten wings is $6 and draft jugs are on sale.

Wednesday Wednesday is a busy day in town with many specials including the Brickhouse Bar and Grill’s mussels happy hour from 3-6pm, alongside discounted wine by the glass and bottle. Island Lake Lodge’s Wine Tasting Wednesday offers a five-course menu paired with five wines from their diverse cellar for $99 per person. For a “cool” experience, escape the summer heat at Cirque’s Ice

Bar which is half price on Wednesdays. The Northern features wings at $9 a pound and jug specials. For a fun community experience, take in the Wednesday Night Concert Series at Station Square in downtown Fernie. Here you’ll find live music, crisp Fernie Brewing Company beer and delicious food truck offerings like vermicelli bowls from the Chopstick Truck and sushi bowl from Yama-2-go.

Thursday Every Thursday, all 2oz cocktails at Infinitea T-Bar are $8. The Pub Bar and Grill’s alwaysfun trivia night features their Pub Burger on sale for $15 and Fernie Brewing Company jugs for $15.50.

Friday Celebrate the end of the week with featured prime rib on one of the best patios in town at the Cast Iron Grill at the Fernie Golf Club. For a classic Fernie Friday night, head to the ever-popular meat draw at the Fernie Hotel and Pub.

Saturday If you missed out on Friday’s prime rib special at the Cast Iron Grill, don’t fret! You can still catch it on Saturday. The Fernie Legion also offers their meat draw this day. Infinitea T-Bar features $5 draught pints during their Vinyl Record Night.

Sunday Enjoy a hearty start to the day at the Cast Iron Grill where they offer brunch every Sunday. In the afternoon, there’s nothing better than enjoying Caesars on special on the Northern’s patio - $7.50 for a double and $5.50 for a single. For dinner, hit Infinitea T-Bar’s $10 BBQ & Beats special which features a rotating Asian, Mexican, Caribbean and Mediterranean barbecue alongside live beats from a DJ or band.

Everyday The Bridge Bistro offers breakfast every day, weekdays from 11am and weekends from 9am. Cirque offers Happy Hour everyday! From 4pm-6pm, pints are on special for $5.50, highballs are $4.50 and cocktails are $10. The Northern and the Pub offer 16 beers on tap, and the Fernie Brewing Company is open seven days a week for beer tastings and pints in their newly refurbished tasting room and patio. No matter the day of the week, there is a restaurant or bar special that is sure to please everyone. This summer, find a couple favourites to frequent every week or see if you can try each one! SUMMER 2018 › WHERE TO STAY

WHERE TO STAY

DOUG FEELY

ISLAND LAKE LODGE After years of working in senior management for large North American resorts I was looking for a smaller more intimate operation when the opportunity as the CEO of Island Lake Resorts came up. I had been to Island Lake as a guest so was thrilled with the chance to put down roots in Fernie. It has been very gratifying to work at Island Lake where the passion of the management team and staff runs deep, as it does throughout Fernie. I am thankful to be able to take advantage of and enjoy all that Fernie and the surrounding area has to offer in terms of outdoor activities. It doesn’t get much better! Island Lake, while famous for its world-class cat-skiing operation, has now developed a robust summer business. While many Saturdays in the summer are booked for weddings and events, the other days of the week are filled with guests flocking to experience Island Lake’s accommodations, dining, spa, trails and spectacular scenery. The same can be said of Fernie; long known as a winter destination but now discovered for what those of us who live here have known all along – Fernie is an amazing summer tourism destination for fly-fishing, river adventures, mountain biking, hiking and many other outdoor activities. As a community we’ve put a lot of energy into developing trails and other amenities. Increased understanding, support and participation by the community in Tourism Fernie and organizations like The Fernie Trails Alliance, Fernie Mountain Bike Club, Fernie Nordic Society and other local groups will be critical to driving tourism and filling the beds, restaurants and retail shops.

Photo courtesy of Best Western Fernie

One of the first decisions when planning your vacation or visit to Fernie is where to stay. Does staying on the hill or in town better suit your needs? Is your group large enough that a house rental is the best option? Do you need to be within walking and biking distance from any specific areas or landmarks? Fortunately there is a plethora of hotels, motels, chalets, condos and houses available for you to peruse (visit our Accommodation Guide), and if you’re short of time consider working with one of the companies specializing in this area.

SUBMITTED PHOTO

British Columbia’s $15-billion visitor economy employs approximately 127,500 people in nearly 19,000 businesses – and it’s growing. Fernie is positioned well to benefit from this growth in tourism. Q. Best way to end a Fernie summer day… A. A mountain bike ride after work followed by a beverage on a Fernie patio while catching the last of the sun streaming on the Three Sisters and Mount Proctor. Q. Fernie stands out as a mountain town because… A. Just stand anywhere and turn 360 degrees – we are surrounded by the southern most

part of the Canadian Rocky Mountains and have the most amazing ski, biking, and hiking terrain. Q. My favourite place to take in the view is... A. The top of Mount Baldy at Island Lake looking towards Wolverine Peak. Spectacular. Q. When in Fernie, don’t miss… A. Heiko’s Trail followed by a ‘Bolter Burger’ and Papa Bear Pilsner on the Bear Deck at Island Lake.

SUMMER 2018 › REAL ESTATE AND DEVELOPMENT

REAL ESTATE AND DEVELOPMENT

Development can be a touchy subject especially in a small town like Fernie. There is a desire to retain the elements that represent Fernie, to protect its environment and respect its roots. Fortunately much of the change Fernie has come across has fit within this framework, and the hope is for this to continue. Trends like renovating or building within developed areas, developing with minimal impact on the land, and incorporating outdoor opportunities into developments are all taking place in Fernie, and with continual demand to visit or live here, we hope to see this continue.

STU ROBBINS

FIRST PEAK HOME INSPECTIONS As any self-respecting 18-year-old ski bum from the lower mainland would, I moved to Whistler in 1991 to ‘live the dream.’ After a short stint in the crazy world that Whistler can be, I migrated across the Powder Highway to a little mining town with a big powder problem called Fernie. I immediately fell in love with the ski hill and the town. I enjoyed working with people on their new homes and renovations as a Carpenter; however, I wanted a job that would compliment my lifestyle of raising a family and enjoying the abundant recreational opportunities that Fernie has to offer. So, for my fourty-third birthday, I went back to school to further my skills and became a Licensed Home Inspector. Home inspections have been an integral part of buying a home since the 1980’s. For most people it is the biggest expenditure of their life so it is important to know the condition of the home before your purchase. My role as a Home Inspector is to provide an onsite visual evaluation of the condition of your home, identifying the components of your house that are deficient, unsafe, or nearing the end of their lifespan. This will allow you to move forward with the purchase with peace of mind. Q. Best way to end a Fernie summer day… A. Sitting around the campfire with my family after a day on the river.

SUBMITTED PHOTO Q. Fernie stands out as a mountain town because… A. Mountains, rivers, trails, and the people… so GOOD!

Q. When in Fernie, don’t miss… A. The Dark and Dirty Gelato from Happy Cow.

Q. My favourite place to take in the view is... A. From the bench on the way up Hyper.

SUMMER 2018 › SERVICES

SERVICES The whole is greater than the sum of its parts. ~ Aristotle Each year it becomes more apparent that it is indeed the citizens of this community and the many engaged visitors that truly make Fernie the thriving town it is known for. During the summer months especially, people come together and create a season full of energy, activity, adventure and art, a season that out shines the one prior year in and year out. It is inspiring to be surrounded by so many active community members, whether they are volunteering their time, organizing an event, donating resources or participating. While in Fernie, take the time to recognize and appreciate the many groups and individuals dedicated to your enjoyment, and most of all enjoy your experience!

JIM AND MARY MILLER

VOLUNTEERS EXTRAORDINAIRE Jim - Mary and l first moved to Fernie in 1982 when I took a job with the City of Fernie. Some of the important projects I worked on were the Elk River Dyke and the development of James White Park. We left a couple of years later to move to eastern Canada but we never lost our love for the mountains and lifestyle that Fernie offered. When we returned back to western Canada (Calgary) in 2002 it was not long before we reestablished our roots in Fernie becoming avid “Calgafernians” spending all our free time here. When we decided to wind down our professional working lives it became a no brainer to relocate permanently to Fernie. Mary - Returning to Fernie after our working careers was an easy transition as we still had friends from the 80’s living in Fernie and we both love outdoor activities. To integrate into the local scene we decided to do some volunteer work, I became a snow host at Fernie Alpine Resort and then the following year I joined Jim as a member of the volunteer ski patrol at the mountain. Jim - It was Bob Brydon’s cousin that had first introduced us to Fernie in the 80’s, so we have known Emily and Rosemary for many years and of the great work the Emily Brydon Youth Foundation does. Mary has been delighted to use her technical and professional skills to assist Rosemary with the Foundation’s work. Her skills have also been of great assistance to me as I have taken on the role of Treasurer of the Fernie Trails Alliance approximately two years ago.

SUBMITTED PHOTO Mary - We both enjoy the great community spirit and lifestyle that Fernie offers and we both feel it is important to give back to the community. We love the enthusiasm of the younger generation and we love the opportunity to help activities and organizations such as Outdoor Connections, the Fernie Nordic Society, the Elk River Alliance, the Fernie Trails Alliance, the Emily Brydon Youth Foundation, Hospice, and the Volunteer Ski Patrol. Q. Best way to end a Fernie summer day… A. J - Having a cold beverage with my neighbours on their patio. M - A quick dip in the Elk River to cool off. Q. Fernie stands out as a mountain town because…

A. J - The Elk River which is a great canoeing river running right through town. M - Of all the local artists who are inspired to live and work in Fernie. Q. My favourite place to take in the view is... A. J - The top of Fernie Mountain where you can look out over the entire town in one direction and at the Rocky Road trail in the other direction. M - The top of Polar Peak on a bluebird day. Q. When in Fernie, don’t miss… A. J - A pleasant stroll on the dyke trail beside the river. M – The Wednesday Concert Series, Wapiti, and concerts at the Arts Station.

Lose the booze: Keep a clear head in case you need to paddle into action. Celebrate your float in the sunshine on a dry, warm patio beside the Elk River.

Heads up: Rivers are constantly changing, especially after spring floods and high flow levels. Watch for obstacles and actively avoid them. Float like a pro: If you end up in the water, swim on your back, feet first, looking downstream. Use your feet to push off obstacles.

Gear up: Lifejackets can be a lifesaver. Shoes help you push off obstacles and are handy if you have to walk out if anything happens. Think twice about pushing off without an extra layer; water is cold year round.

FEATURE HIKES AT FERNIE ALPINE RESORT Polar Peak Ridgewalk

Lost Boys Look Out

Summer Road

Difficulty: Advanced / Difficult Length: 5km / 6-8 hours round trip Elevation Gain/Loss: 464m/-185m

Difficulty: Easy Length: 2km / 1 hour round trip Elevation Gain/Loss: 97m/-55m

Difficulty: Moderate Length: 2.46km / 2 hours one way Elevation Gain/Loss: 320m/-21m

Our ultimate trail for the adventurous and experienced hiker! Access to the Polar Peak Ridgewalk is via the Lost Boys Lookout trail. After a steady scramble up Elephant Head, this rugged alpine trail traverses over a series of small limestone summits. Not for the faint of heart, there are several spots with feeling of exposure and one descent requiring assistance of a fixed cable. At 2100 metres, Polar Peak provides a 360 degree view of the surrounding area so have your camera ready! From the peak, return to the top of the Timber Chair via the Polar Road & White Pass Trail.

The ultimate alpine hike for those short on time! The trail traverses through stunning alpine meadows before reaching the Lost Boys Observation Deck. From the deck, enjoy beautiful panoramic views southward towards Lake Koocanusa. Return to the top of the Timber Chair via the same route. If you have time to explore a little more, return via the Mammoth Trail which descends through sub-alpine forest to the massive debris of a very old, large landslide. Explore the towering limestone boulders before a return ascent up the Falling Star ski run to the top of the Timber Chair.

Same description that you have, but in the second paragraph you can refer to the Skeleton Flats trail as the one that descends through the Dancer avalanche path (between Cascade & Dancer). And add this one note after the sentence about the fossils. This is unique ecosystem provides nutrient rich habitat for wildflowers, moose, and bears. Please stay on trail to protect glacier lilies, blue clematis, and western anemone wildflowers.

Fernie’s extensive trail system spreads over the valley, on private land, Crown land and City property. Thankfully, with organizations such as the Fernie Trails & Ski Touring Club, the Fernie Mountain Bike Club and the Fernie Trails Alliance, important land-use agreements are in place to allow multiuse recreation on these trails, along with trail building, enhancement and maintenance.

Al be rt a

Please respect the hard work and countless hours of many volunteers and the agreements in place. When using the Fernie trail network, try to leave as little evidence as possible of your journey. Take out what you brought in. Avoid trails when they are wet and saturated. Make noise and travel in a group to avoid animal encounters and to warn other recreationalists of your presence. Read signage and obey rules such as “Dogs on Leash” or “No Dogs Allowed.” And respect other recreationalists and landowners.
