CONTRIBUTORS ANDREW VALLANCE is a cinophile nerd who currently lives on the west coast. Girlfriendless, he spends his time going to movies, buying DVDs and flirting. ANGE QUALIZZA is a nutty economist who has a passion for policy, governance and everything to do with municipal government! Let’s lift up the carpet and take a closer look inside City Hall. ASHLEY KRISTINA has studied astrology for over twenty years and has been reading/teaching for five. For an in depth natal chart reading, email mountainashastrology@ gmail.com. BOB MAUDIE is the owner and lead Physiotherapist at Fernie Physiotherapy and Sports Injury Clinic. He has been known to ski 120 day a year, run on a fractured leg for two months, and not miss a day skiing through an ACL injury. He has learned a lot from his own stubbornness and would like to share his wisdom with the people of Fernie. BRITTNEY TRACEY is a local born, winter-hating ultramarathoner who spends her free time eating beef jerky and trying to get people out on the trails. She sits on the board for the Sparwood Trails Alliance and hosts their Thursday Night Run Club. EMMA POLIT likes to wander the world, swim in the seas and ride in the mountains. You may also find her sipping margaritas and eating tacos. JULIE KELLY is the Manager for the Fernie Trails Alliance and loves spending time on the Fernie trails. KERRI WALL specialises in group facilitation, mediation, parent coaching, and leadership training. She welcomes inquiries at kerriwall.ca. KEVIN MCISAAC haunts the coffee shops and streets of Fernie to find his column source material.

MADDY ALARIC is a lover of putting things down and picking them back up again, whether it be weights or her two year old daughter. She loves inspiring people through her classes at Soar Studios and looks forward to sharing this love through her column, “Elements of Movement.” MICHAEL HEPHER is a painter, printmaker, sculptor and musician living and working in Fernie. His work is collected internationally and can be seen locally at Clawhammer Press and a variety of galleries in Western Canada. ROMAN RYBAR has worked in the financial industry since 1996. He became a Limited Partner with Edward Jones in 2004. When he is not helping clients he can be found enjoying bike trails or manning the bbq for family and friends. Every month SADIE ROSGEN teams up with some of Fernie’s brightest young writers collaborating on a given theme. If you are reading this and think that you are that person, drop her a line at sadiepumps@ gmail.com. DR. TAINA TURCASSO is a naturopathic doctor and midwife practicing in Calgary, Alberta. She spends most of her time catching babies, and is inching her way back to Fernie. TYLA CHARBONNEAU is a Registered Psychologist (CPBC2385), dog momma, and nature lover. She loves talking with others about mindfulness, selfcompassion, and human nature. VAL LANTHIER is the Vet Tech behind local pet sitting and dog walking services, Pet Tech Care. For her, it’s animals all day every day, with a focus on how we can enrich their lives. YVONNE PREST wears a lot of hats: New mom, writer, teacher, councillor, chips and salsa fanatic. Her favourite hat is being a Fernie-ite.

T

hey say repetition forms the basis for learning, skill development and accomplishment. Malcolm Gladwell had it down to the hours, 10,000 to be exact to become an expert. While we likely aren’t setting goals to become ‘experts,’ many of us are keen to create healthier and more meaningful lifestyle changes. Enter the Streak Issue. Inspired by the #ferniestreak, which encourages people to step outside for 30 minutes a day to enjoy self-propelled exercise for the month of January, we felt there were opportunities for us to extend this into other realms. Spend quality time with people you have fallen out of touch with, finally read that pile of books you’ve been collecting, incorporate the one meal a day for the planet into your family’s diet, do one act of kindness a day. The options are endless, really and this issue is here to not only inspire but support along the way. One of the best ways to commit is putting it down on paper and sharing it with others. I’ll go first. I will #ferniestreak, but also read something new (emails and the Fernie Fix excluded) and play piano daily. Additionally, do one ‘just for fun’ activity with my kids. You’re next, what are you waiting for? 10,000 hours might seem unsurmountable but 31 days… you’ve got this! Krista Turcasso, Editor FERNIE FIX | FERNIEFIX.COM

eading changes your mind, your ability to discern and decide. It changes the context of the space you mentally and physically inhabit. It expands that niggling sense that there is always more to an idea or story than you might have initially thought. Reading gives us insight and hindsight, and the year 2020 is definitely the year for that! When we read that the January Fernie Fix is dedicated to the idea of Fernie Streaks, we decided to join in with a little challenge-a Fernie Literary streak. This month, read something intentionally every single day. Choose your reading minutes, make your list, decide the content. Financial Resolutions

minimizing your errors. For example, it’s generally a mistake to jump out of the market in response to a period of volatility. If you wait for things to “calm down” before investing again, you might miss out on the opportunity to participate in the next market rally.

by ROMAN RYBAR, CFP

W

e’re just about ready to open the door to 2020, so you might be thinking about some New Year’s resolutions. What’s on your list this year? More visits to the gym? Learning a new language? Mastering the perfect beef bourguignon? All worthy ambitions, of course, but why not also include some financial resolutions? By reviewing your needs and goals, you can identify some resolutions that are particularly relevant to your situation. But here are a few suggestions: Build an emergency fund If you needed a major car repair or a new furnace, or faced some other large, unanticipated expense, could you cope with it? If you didn’t have the money readily available, you might have to dip into those investments intended for longterm goals, such as retirement. Instead, build an emergency fund containing three to six months’ worth of living expenses, kept in a liquid, low-risk account. Cut down on debts It’s not easy to cut down on one’s debt load. But if you can find ways to reduce your debts, you’ll help improve your overall financial picture. Many debts are not “useful” – that is, they don’t carry any tax advantages – so every dollar you spend to pay down those debts is a dollar you could use to invest for your future. Boost contributions to your retirement plan If your employer offers a group RRSP or similar retirement plan, take full advantage of it.Your earnings have the potential to grow tax deferred and your contributions may lower your taxable income. Plus, most plans offer a selection of investment

It’s not easy to cut down on one’s debt load. But if you can find ways to reduce your debts, you’ll help improve your overall financial picture.

Think long term Keep this in mind:You’re not investing for today or tomorrow, but for many years from now. Try to keep a long-term focus when making all your key investment decisions. By doing so, you can avoid overreacting to short-term developments, such as a sudden drop in the market or a “momentous” political event that decreases in importance as time goes by. Try to follow these financial resolutions as best as you can.You could make 2020 a year to remember.

options, so you can choose the investment mix that fits your objectives and risk tolerance. Therefore, if your salary goes up this year, or if you think you can find other ways to free up some money, increase your contributions to your retirement plan. Review your portfolio Is your investment portfolio still on track toward helping you meet your long-term goals? If not, you may need to make some changes. You’ll also want to study your investment mix to make sure it still accurately reflects your risk tolerance. Over time, and often without your taking any significant actions, your portfolio can “drift” to a place where you are taking on too much risk – or even too little risk – for your needs and long-term objectives. If this happens, you may need to “rebalance” your holdings. Avoid mistakes None of us can avoid all mistakes, in life and in our investment activities. But as an investor, you’ll clearly benefit from

Arts and Entertainment

FEATURE ARTIST

Brina Schenk and The Proud Art Post

There are a few moments and experiences that have led me to where I am right now. It feels serendipitous as if there’s nothing else I should be doing. • My two kids have inspired me the most, their desire to draw every day and show me what they’ve created. They know I’m proud of all the art they do and how they are progressing. • Over the past year, I have helped create a few kid’s art programs through The Arts Station and I am amazed by the focus and attention

each child puts into their artwork. I know kids can get distracted fairly quickly but when we work on a creative project together, we always run out of time. • After I led my daughter’s Grade 1 class in a step-by-step drawing, the teacher approached me and told me, “That was art therapy.” Students in the class who usually have a hard time focusing on tasks spent an entire hour fully engaged in one single drawing.

• Private art lessons with a few local boys have given me an intimate look at the joy of drawing. Offering a few suggestions and tips along the way, we, for the most part, just have fun drawing and being silly with our creations. I was inspired by my husband’s fun-focused way of teaching our kids how to mountain bike and ski. He’s more about the time spent together on the mountain, being silly and exploring than learning proper technique.

These experiences and inspirations have sent me on a new journey - designing and creating a global drawing program for kids. It’s called The Proud Art Post. The Proud Art Post is a subscription art program with new art challenges mailed to our young artists as they are completed. My first goal was to get kids drawing more. The more we draw, the better we get, the more confident we feel. It’s common for children to stop drawing around the age of 10 because they want to draw more realistically but don’t have the skills or confidence to draw the way want to. So the pencils and markers get put away for a while. I’m living proof of this. I didn’t start drawing again until I was in my 20s. Art, at any age, is extremely beneficial. It’s a way to relate, tell stories, release, recollect, remember and heal. For kids, creating art is beneficial for their confidence, fine motor and cognitive development but it also gives them an opportunity for a bit of quiet in their day and for developing empathy. Art challenges children and can inspire a lifetime of drawing for the fun of it. As a professional, drawing and creating and producing new art isn’t an easy task. I need to keep working every day on myself, to stay motivated. Work hard. Keep dreaming. Don’t stop. It’s easy to find other ways to spend your free time and then, eventually, inevitably, I’ll feel as though there’s something missing in my life. I am 42 and I’m still learning every time I pick up a pencil. I don’t imagine I’ll stop learning and growing as an artist. My goal is to keep drawing almost every day and I’ll continue to encourage kids to draw as much as they can because even if you don’t love what you’re drawing, it’s good for the heart and the soul.

Streaking for Art’s Sake

First Annual Fernie Art Streak

by MICHAEL HEPHER

I

love my creative life—I wake up in the morning, make coffee, help the kids out the door to school, and at that moment the routine in my life ends. For the rest of the day, I could be setting some type for a new poster, carving a block for a print commission, working on paintings for a solo show, or putting together an application for a future public art call. The diversity and unpredictability of my days bring me a lot of satisfaction, but there are times it can feel hard to see the thread that connects them all.

1. Starting January 1, 2020 I’ll be posting a daily item to Instagram and Facebook to showcase something creative I’m doing. You can follow me at instagram. com/MichaelHepher and facebook.com/ MichaelHepherArt. 2. I’ll tag each of these daily posts with the hashtag #FernieArtStreak

With the rise of social media, we have seen a growth in designated months that challenge and encourage people to invest in a particular activity for 30 days. We all know about Movember of course, and Sober October but there are more: like Inktober for illustrators, and the new-to-me idea of MerMay—apparently drawing a mermaid every day for a month is considered personal growth, and why shouldn’t it be? Being that my life is hard to fit into any kind of box, I’ve always shied away from monthly challenges because I know they will be tough to implement in my life. I’ve avoided making New Year’s resolutions for the same reason: what’s the point if you know it’s not going to last? And yet I know that in both of these cases at least part of my aversion comes from a fear of failing. If I set my bar low I can make sure I’ll be able to jump over it. But what’s the idea of these challenges if not to do something challenging? Even in failure, we can learn something. They say calm seas never made a great sailor. To be clear, it’s not the doing of the thing I fear, it’s the institutionalization: I’m afraid the formality will feel like a burden or make my life feel robotic

3. For 31 days I’ll challenge myself to make and share something new every day through to the end of the month. 4. Want to join me? All you have to do is tag your posts #FernieArtStreak.

and forced. Secretly, I’ve always admired people who take on a monthly challenge and out of it grows some new insight. It seems to benefit so many, even if the only thing that comes from it is the feeling of accomplishment that comes from setting a goal and reaching for it. As we gear up for the second #FernieStreak, I realize that I’m ready to face my fear and do a little streaking of my own. Fernie already has enough people running, biking, jogging, doing yoga and skiing, so I want to do my part to widen the definition of what kind of things we are streaking at: I hereby pledge to kick off the first annual Fernie Art Streak. Here’s how it works:

5. Succeed or fail, we’ll get together at the end to raise a glass in celebration of our journey.

nowing Mike Bull is a lot like arriving at an amusement park with an unlimited amount of ride tickets clenched tightly in your sweaty palm. It’s thrilling, wild, and full to the brim with unadulterated joy. I met Mike in a rehearsal hall as we prepared for a local theatre production together. Since then, almost every theatrical experience I’ve pursued in Fernie has been shared with Mike. One of my favourite connections with Mike includes our passion for the theatre and general amusement. If Mike isn’t organizing fundraisers, he’s teaching children. If he isn’t hosting game shows in bars, he’s hosting comedy shows in them. He’s an actor, an uncle, a journalist, a teacher, a bagel maker, and one of the finest folks here in Fernie. Mike Bull and I had the silliest of times creating this next piece. Enjoy the ride and get outside!

Yesterday by ANDREW VALLANCE

T

he Beatles are an English rock band that, besides being a best-selling band, is often regarded as the most influential band of all time. It was formed in Liverpool in 1960 and was integral to the evolution of the rock and roll music of the 1950s into an art form, pioneering recording techniques and integrating such diverse music forms as pop ballads, hard rock, classical and Indian. Its musical sophistication came to be seen as embodying the socio-cultural movements of the 60s. The members of the band were John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988, and in 2008, they topped Billboard magazine’s list of the all-time most successful artists. The band received seven Grammy Awards, an Academy Award (for Best Original Song Score for the 1970 film Let It Be) and fifteen Ivor Novello Awards. They were collectively included in Time magazine’s compilation of the twentieth century’s 100 most influential people

While the main actors in this film do not have long filmographies, they should be recognized for playing excellent roles in this film. Jack Malik is played by Himesh Patel, a British actor who has previously had a successful run in East Enders, one of the most popular soap operas in the U.K. Lilly James plays Ellie, Jack’s love interest. She has appeared in a number of less notable movies including Cinderella, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, and the television series Downton Abbey.

THE RENTAL FIX

Also featured in the cast are Kate McKinnon, who plays Malik’s predatory American agent, and pop star Ed Sheeran gives a surprisingly good turn playing himself. Richard Curtis is one of Britain’s most successful comedy screenwriters. He is known primarily for romantic comedies such as Four Weddings and a Funeral, Notting Hill, Bridget Jones’s Diary, and Love Actually. Danny Boyle, on the other hand, is an Oscar-winning director, who is recognized for such edgy films as Trainspotting, Shallow Grave, Slumdog Millionaire and Steve Jobs. His debut film Shallow Grave won the BAFTA Award for Best British Film. The British Film Institute ranked Trainspotting the 10th greatest British film of the 20th century. These two talents have come together to produce a film that is an inoffensive little fantasy with a surprising ending that’s sure to delight.

Given that the Beatles have been so influential in music since the 60s, it is not surprising that director Danny Boyle and screenwriter Richard Curtis would be tempted to create a movie that introduces Beatles’ music to a new generation of music lovers. That film is Yesterday. Yesterday tells the story of Jack Malik, a struggling musician who, on a dark and stormy night, gets hit by a bus and wakes up in a world in which The Beatles do not exist. By a strange turn of events, Jack seems to be the only person who remembers the band and, as he soon comes to realize, knowing the lyrics to their songs is his key to fame and fortune.

FEATURE RESIDENT

Claire Smallwood by KRISTA TURCASSO

S

heJumps is an organization that motivates women and girls of all backgrounds to step out of their comfort zone in a fun, non-threatening, inclusive environment to learn outdoor skills. I was first introduced to this group at an event in Fernie last January at Fernie Alpine Resort and was blown away. I can relate to being empowered by sport and being in the outdoors so was very keen to get to know Claire Smallwood, the Executive Director who now calls Fernie home. Claire is originally from Santa Fe, New Mexico where she was ‘born and raised.’ “Nobody in my family skied,” Claire tells me. Fortunately there were subsidies available through the elementary school she attended growing up. “If someone had not come up with that program, I would not be where I am today,” she adds. “It was a huge part of SheJumps - providing access to something that otherwise might be exclusive.” After graduating high school, Claire attended University in Portland, Oregon where she studied foreign languages and literature. “I was trying to find a degree that would allow me to ski year-round!” She became president of the ski and snowboard club, which was a natural fit. “My identity as a skier developed early on because there weren’t a lot of women, or skiers in general even with the amazing skiing in New Mexico. I was empowered by it, and felt like I had an obligation to show what all women and girls are capable of.” Afterwards, she studied abroad in Senegal, which changed her view on privilege and the access we have which is far too easy to take for granted in our culture. “In our pantries we have enough food for a month but go to the grocery store every day. Living there was signing an invisible

ABBY COOPER PHOTO

contract with humanity, to always do something for the greater good, to give back,” Claire says. While there, Claire began writing articles on biglines.com and other popular sites to share what it was like to be in Africa during an epic ski season. “I was missing out, but cultivating a different appreciation,” she tells me. Soon afterward, Claire met Vanessa Pierce and Lindsey Dyer at her first ever free ski comp. “They invited me to Jackson Hole in May 2007 to talk about the concept of SheJumps. It was serendipitous, connecting at pivotal moments in all of our lives,” Claire adds. “We knew there were women out there doing awesome things not getting any coverage, and our vision was to highlight, celebrate and uplift women in the outdoors.”

They had no concept of programming at the time, and after becoming an official charitable organization in the US they worked on increasing opportunities for women to get outside. From 2008 to 2012, the growth was organic. “It was word of mouth, women contacting us to say they loved what we were doing and that they wanted to host events.” In 2012, Claire suffered an injury that had her slowing down and turning her ‘side project’ into a full-time endeavour. “But great things can come from terrible accidents,” Claire says. “That summer I focused on SheJumps. It was my roots, we re-branded and created a structure that allowed us to expand nationally with ambassador programs and state-level leadership.”

During this time, Claire met her now husband Spencer in Chile. “I was a chef and guide in South America, we travelled together and did long distance for three years between Canada and the US. We settled in Fernie because of the community, and because we knew SheJumps would be welcomed here.” Since calling Fernie home, Claire and her Fernie crew have been busy inspiring and hosting women in Fernie. From the International Women’s Snow Day to the Junior Ski Patrol, free mountain bike maintenance clinics to alpine development schools, they’ve been working hard to develop programming that positively impacts and empowers women in the outdoors. Locally, Cindy Sleeman is the Fernie Ambassador, and Sam Usher the Regional Coordinator for BC.

opening day. And I still ended up loving this town! 2. Who did you first meet? Mike McPhee, because he lived with my husband in Lake Louise twenty years ago. 3. Do you remember your first general impression of Fernie? It was quiet and peaceful. And cold! 4. What keeps you here? Everything. Literally it’s a magical place with a wonderful community that can’t be replicated. 5. Do you have a favourite Fernie pastime? Skiing deep pow! 6. What time of the year do you love most in Fernie, and why?

“We would love to hear from the community - what activity have you always wanted to do that you are afraid to try?’ They are also always looking for volunteers as recognise everyone has a different experience and perspective to offer. As well they are keen to focus on diversity, equity and inclusion. “How can we make the outdoors more welcoming for different abilities, people from different backgrounds, people with disabilities… making it as accessible as possible.

Deep winter, because I get to go skiing every day! Growing up in New Mexico,

This January, SheJumps is offering multiple opportunities to get out during the #FernieStreak, and they invite you to take part! Visit the FernieStreak calendar and save the date, watch out for ongoing events hosted by SheJumps throughout the year here in Fernie and visit shejumps.org for more details on this fantastic organization.

7. Where do you see or hope to see Fernie in five years? I hope to see Fernie have a sustainable tourism plan as it’s a direction the town is going in, with an eye towards making it still liveable for locals. 8. How do you start your day or what is one of your daily rituals? I go to CrossFit, almost every day. 9. Tell us something people might be surprised to learn about you. I’m a new-found hockey fan and never watched it prior to moving to Canada, I love the Ghostriders. 10. Quote to live by: The She Jumps tag line - What great thing would you dare to accomplish if success was the only possible outcome?

you noticing? Any big surprises so far?” might get your teen reflecting on and sharing about their experience.Verbally acknowledging their commitment and will-power will also go over well.

by KERRI WALL

Streaks for parents of teenagers Parenting by example is the way of wise moms and dads. Teenagers hate being lectured to and are ready to test out their thinking in the world, so our best chance of guiding children at this age is to be the kind of adult we want them to grow into.

S

etting goals is one thing, but making a plan to follow through is next level. This is what makes a streak so exceptional. A streak can be partnered with a New Year’s resolution or a word of the year, and make either one more powerful. If you join together in your streak with friends – even better! A streak can be an opportunity to learn, to grow, to build confidence, and to connect with others.

Teen streaks A teenager who used to work at the movie theatre decided a few years ago that he needed to go on a water streak. Employees at the cinema had easy access to fountain pop and drank a lot of it. I remember this young man telling me about only drinking water for 30 days straight. He sadly admitted, “All that pop and juice can’t be good for my skin or teeth.” A young woman I know did a 30-day streak of collecting ALL her garbage to understand her waste footprint. She accumulated packaging from fast food, sales tags from clothing she bought, and even tampon applicators. Now she thinks twice before taking free mints at restaurants because of the single-use plastic they are wrapped in. Fitness streaks are of course the most common kind. The 30-Day Ab Challenge is a popular one (I’ve done it) and there’s the 30-Day Squat Challenge too (ditto). A swim coach in Sweden I follow on Instagram is doing a swimming streak and today was his 115th day in a row! For the committed, I recommend a substance-free streak. Are you sure you aren’t addicted? Supporting teen streaks If your teen wants to streak in 2020 remember they are taking on a project. You may have judgments about the challenge they have chosen, but keep those between you, your journal, and your trusted friend. You might prefer if your kid chose a putshoes-away streak or a no-phone-zone experiment. But this isn’t about you. Demonstrating curiosity by asking questions and fully listening to your teen’s replies is the way to be a caring parent. Your advice or opinions won’t be as useful as a true show of interest. Questions like, “how is the streak going? What are

If I want my kid to be open-minded, to try new things, and to listen to their own impulses instead of following the crowd, then it’s my responsibility to live this way as a grown-up. Can you think of a streak to try that would challenge you to walk your talk? Another idea is to choose a streak that could support your parenting and/or shift your perspective on having a teenager. You could make a daily list for the whole month of special moments with your teen or the funny and poignant things they say or the reasons you feel grateful for them. A more advanced option would be to take on a streak that your teenager has “suggested”. Maybe at some point, your son or daughter has told you to lighten up or said you complain too much. Are you up for a dance-every-day streak to bring out your playful side? I have a friend who did a 365-day dance streak! Are you courageous enough to entertain a nocomplaining streak? It could change your whole outlook. My streak The word I have chosen for 2020 is ‘imagine’ and I will be doing a January streak of creative visualization for 10 minutes per day. I hope you get your streak on too!

Welcome to the 2nd Annual #FernieStreak Whether you’re looking for a three-hour adventure or cramming a 30-minute walk into your hectic day, streaking is for everyone. The inaugural year was a huge success, full of inspiring stories, amazing photos, epic adventures, rekindled friendships, new sports, and 31 days full to the brim of #FernieStoke. Perhaps you’re a 2nd-year streaker who needs a little reminder or a newbie streaker who needs a little nudge – regardless, be sure to check out the below tips to help you streak your way to success…

Ang Qualizza, Mayor of Fernie As winter hits, I always put my townie away and hop into my car. Last year, I challenged myself to walk to and from work every day for the month and it was such a refreshing reset and reminder how easy it is – from my house to City Hall is only 15 minutes, hardly a reason to drive at all! For all of us walkers out there, join me on this goal! Groceries, mail, appointments… let’s streak our way there! Julie Kelly, Fernie Trails Alliance Try to hit as many different trails in the month. Mix up the activities each day to keep it fresh. Bring a buddy, streaking is always more fun together! And lastly, get on the caffeine! Abi Moore, Stag Leap Running Co. Streaking (of the clothed variety) is generally defined by running every day for at least 1 mile, for a long time. In some cases, a very long time. The longest recorded running streak ended at 52 years and 39 days, held by a 78-year-old named Ron Hill. On Sunday, January 29, 2017, Ron did something he hadn’t done in a very long time – he took a day off. So, when you’re on the fence as to whether you want to keep going around week three, get out there and channel your inner Ron! Samantha Sedlowsky, Fernie Nordic Society I wrote out a list of 30 people I wanted to reconnect with or get to know better... then made plans to do my streak activity with them. Usually walking or snowshoeing so we could talk (and solve the world’s problems)!

I reconnected with a friend I hadn’t seen in three years for a two-hour snowshoe. After 31 days, I ended up catching up one-on-one with around 20 different people and I’m aiming to do better this year! Troy Nixon, Fernie Mountain Bike Club Getting out and riding can be super easy and fun. I’ve been biking yearround for at least seven years and the winter variety is a little mellower than the summer. Borrow or rent a bike, slap on a helmet and some eye protection, dress in layers and put on some warm boots. We have some pretty dedicated groomers in the valley so new trails are getting groomed all the time. The adaptive trail in Montane is a good starter. As for other trails head to Trailforks or Strava and see where people are riding. Our fat bike community is growing so trails get packed down pretty quickly after a snowfall. See you out there! Tyla Charbonneau, Alpine Pathways Psychology Tips for a mind healthy streak: • Practice everyday mindfulness to stay in the moment. Focus on your senses, what colours do you see, sounds, smells etc. • If you are trying a new sport out with friends say, “thank you for waiting” instead of “I’m sorry,” if you need to catch up. • Think about what your body is doing while active, focusing on each muscle as you move. • Reframe any thought of “I cannot do this,” to “I can handle it.”

Join the #Sparwoodstreak Brittney Tracey, Sparwood Trails Alliance This month join Sparwood Trails Alliance for the #sparwoodstreak. Thanks for the invite from Fernie! Let’s get out and active and start 2020 the right way. To be a part of the streak, you must get outside on our trail system every day, whether you bike, run, walk, snowshoe, or ski, whatever gets you out. Document it with an activity log (strava/pink bike/ trail forks etc.) or a handwritten calendar to submit at the end of the month and be entered for a draw prize. Share your activities on Facebook or Instagram with #sparwoodstreak and #sparwoodtrailsalliance.

New this year! • The #FernieStreak Wrap Up Social will be taking place on Sunday 2nd February at The Bridge Bistro, from 4-7 PM. More details will follow in the #FernieStreak Facebook Group! • If you want to try a new sport and need some gear, be sure to take advantage of the generous support from local stores. The Gear Hub is offering 25% off Nordic, Snow Shoe and Fat Bike rentals for streakers for January!

The Streak by BOB MAUDIE

E

very March my clinic is full of people who have been overdoing it on the slopes. Rarely missing a day; skiing in the rain, boarding on ice or living the dream on epic pow days. I always ask them their number. They all know it. Usually somewhere between 80-90 days by March. “I had to go visit my wife’s family in Ontario at Christmas, so I missed five, snowed every day I was gone!”Yep, been that guy before. While some others have

skied so much that they even have runs at the hill named after them! Downhill skiing and snowboarding put a large demand on specific regions of the body, most noted are the quadriceps and the low back. Our bodies are very good at adapting to stresses put on them if the loading is slow and progressive. However, relatively quick loading changes like those seen over the ski season can lead to overuse injuries developing. I have outlined a handful of key exercises that can be used as a prehab “Streak” this January. Do these exercises daily this

PREHAB CHALLENGE

January and decrease the chance of missing a day on the slopes due to injury this March. These exercises can be done before going up to the hill as a warm-up or after a day of riding as a way to let the body recover for tomorrow, because yes, you know it, you will be going back tomorrow! Disclaimer: If you have pre-existing medical conditions/injuries, pain with these exercises and/or uncertainty on how to do them, please seek help from your Physiotherapist.

Exercises The knee joint is affected by numerous muscle groups. With skiing and boarding, the most dominant is the quadriceps. Exercise 1. Quad Rolling This can be done sitting which is more comfortable or laying prone. Roll over the quadricep muscle (all aspects of the front of your thigh) with a foam roller or rolling pin. This does not have to be painful to be effective, a “good ache” is all that is needed. Roll for 1-2 minutes per leg avoiding your knee cap. Exercise 2. Quad Stretching Stretch your quadriceps: standing or laying on your side, clasp your ankle and bend your knee, extend your hip while holding tension in your core. Hold the stretch for 30 seconds per side. The low back is influenced by many sources above it and below it. Skiing and boarding demand the body to be in prolonged hip flexion and upper back flexion which can intern result in an unhappy low back. Here are a couple of exercises to maintain your hip flexor length and back mobility.

Exercise 3. Lunge with Rotation Go into a lunge position with both knees approximately 90-degrees bend, both feet pointed forward. Lengthen your upper back and neck as tall as you can. Clasp hands in front of you. Rotate slowing both ways 5 times. Now alternate legs and repeat. Exercise 4. Upper Back Shoulder Opener Laying on your side with your hips bent to 90 degrees. Support your neck with a pillow if needed. Clasp hands in front of you, move the top hand to the other side following the motion with your upper back and neck. Repeat 10 times each side. Exercise 5. Upper Back Strengthening WTY’s Laying on your tummy make a double chin and hold this through exercise. Elevate upper back and head off the floor. Raise your arms off the floor making a W, T, or Y. Hold for 3-5 seconds before lowering. Aim for 3 reps of each letter. Remember to keep the double chin throughout! FERNIEFIX.COM

FERNIE MOUNTAIN MAMAS

Tribe Inspirers by YVONNE PREST

new year and a new opportunity to take part in the #FernieStreak are upon us. Mamas, Papas, babes and everyone in between are encouraged to get active, to connect and to smash new goals. Whatever those goals may be, it does not matter, as long as they are important to you. The #FernieStreak is a daily commitment to yourself to bring your intentions into the light. The best thing about the #FernieStreak is that you are not alone, your community is right there with you, also striving to begin the year on a determined and rejuvenated foot. This year I’d love to introduce my son to winter sports such as skiing, tobogganing and snowshoeing. Last year, he was born during a snowstorm, and I’ve always hoped that my little Griz would also have a passion for all things snow. When looking for motivation, I always turn to others. Other Fernie Mountain Mamas who inspire me. Mamas who make it look so easy! I asked several Mamas to share their goals for this new year and I’d like to share their ideas with you. May their dreams ignite your own! “I’ve fallen in love with snowboarding all over again now that my little man is stoked. Seeing activities through his eyes has gotten me out even more. Stoke factor: HIGH.” Chantel Vincent “Usually, I don’t let the snow or cold stop me from getting out with my active toddler! We love to take our dog for a walk, go xc-skiing and this year, we are hoping she will discover a love of skiing just like her mom and dad. However, I’m expecting baby number two in February, so this winter, my goal is simply to try and figure out how to get two kids bundled up and out the door for some fresh air!” Stephanie Nault

The best thing about the #FernieStreak is that you are not alone, your community is right there with you, also striving to begin the year on a determined and rejuvenated foot. “My goal this year is to not use hot chocolate as a motivator to get my threeyear-old to do one more lap on the Magic Carpet. LOL. I have to let her have fun and tap into her own love of the snow.” Rebecca Vaughan “Listen more. My intention for 2020 is to make a habit of listening to my children (others) before I offer my personal opinion or thoughts. As I develop my own attentive listening, I feel strongly that it will encourage my children to listen to their own inner voice and intuition as well. And what a better place to start than by immersing ourselves in the beautiful silence of Mother Nature itself. Daily walks and practice are essential.” - Sanne de Groot

“My resolution is to create more crafts with my daughter. Be present and join in the things that bring her joy rather than watching from the sideline.” – L’wren Farkas “This winter I’d love to get out and share the experience of xc-skiing more often with my daughter. Instilling the importance of ‘taking a breath’ from our busy days is something that’s valuable to me.” - Adina Koran “Here is my bucket list: Walk to school more often, build a snow fort, have a bonfire, make snow angels and build a snowman, go sledding, go snowboarding on Community Day!” - Tanya Malcolm Thank you all for the inspiration. Happy #FernieStreak! Are you also a Fernie Mountain Mama? Please feel free to share your outdoor adventures, family stories and photos by writing to ferniemountainmamas@gmail.com, or hashtag #ferniemountainmamas to encourage more parents to take their little ones outdoors and share in all the fun that Fernie has to offer. BARK BREAK

A Couple of Lucky Boys and Fitness for Dogs by VAL LANTHIER

I

f there’s one thing everyone living in Fernie can agree on it’s that we’re all so lucky to call this place home! Especially if you’re an adopted dog like Gus and London, who hit the jackpot in finding humans who choose to live here. Gus is a Husky and he’s a young retired sled dog from Alaska. His favourite activity is eating.Yes, for him we can call it an activity because he chooses food over anything else. You would understand if you ever had the pleasure of losing (every time) in a back and forth vocal argument trying to ask him, ‘Wanna go for a walk?’ before he’s had his meal - not gonna happen! After he chows down, he loves to hit up his favourite trails in the Mount Fernie Provincial Park and Island Lake Lodge areas. London is a puppy-face mixed breed who was found as a stray in North Eastern BC. He’s like most dogs who loves to adventure as much as he loves eating, although he still has his own quirk. His favourite activity is swimming and it’s no wonder his local hot spot is Silver Spring Lake. He would fetch sticks all day, every day if he could, but only sticks. Don’t throw a ball or another toy or you’ll be going for a dip to get it yourself while he watches from shore. Fernie is like dog heaven, it’s so easy to enjoy a variety of sports with so many multi-use trails, it’s certain dogs will be #FernieStreaking as much their humans this month, and throughout the year for that matter. Your dog likely has a favourite sport, but don’t forget to switch it up as various activities meet different exercise needs. Providing variety helps to avoid repetitive movements, makes for less risk of injury

VAL LANTHIER PHOTO

Fernie is like dog heaven, it’s so easy to enjoy a variety of sports with so many multiuse trails, it’s certain dogs will be #FernieStreaking as much their humans this month, and throughout the year for that matter. and creates balance for a fit and healthy friend who will keep up with you. Fitness for dogs can be broken down into two types - high or low-impact. High-impact exercise are activities where your dog is moving faster than their own natural pace, or anytime your dog is trying to keep up with you. Running, biking, back-country or Nordic skiing, or uninterrupted fetching are all examples. Biking is particularly high-impact on the joints and running through deep powder snow requires a lot of energy and full range of motion. Fetching makes for very repetitive movements. These activities are excellent and necessary for maintaining good cardio and fitness, yet they go hand-

in-hand with a higher risk of injury and require proper periods of rest in between. Low-impact exercise make up any activity where your dog is moving freely at their own pace, like walking, hiking, snowshoeing and swimming. Hiking is the most balanced activity as it involves elevated and uneven terrain requiring a wide variety of movements all while maintaining cardio without excess speed. Swimming is excellent with it being very low-impact yet requiring wide range of motion, especially from the front end. Remember that most low-impact sports for us humans are usually the opposite for our dogs. It’s also important to know that puppies are born without their joints being fully developed and should only be doing low-impact exercises until they reach full size, which can take up to three years for some large breed dogs. It’s well worth the wait. Adult dogs can truly thrive and achieve health and longevity with a variety of exercises. In between days of intense activity, go ahead and enjoy a casual stroll along the dyke or in the forest with your best bud. FERNIEFIX.COM

Finding Your Fitness Friend by MADDY ALARIC

I

t’s January and that means many of us are starting off the New Year with the #FernieStreak. What is the Fernie Streak? It’s about setting the goal to do thirty minutes of self-propelled activity outdoors with intention for as many days in January as possible. For all you activity enthusiasts out there, this challenge is going to be right up your alley as we welcome another funfilled year in Fernie.

Health and Lifestyle

ELEMENTS OF MOVEMENT

I’ve previously discussed the benefits of committing to a person or group to aid us in holding ourselves accountable when it comes to reaching fitness goals, but what about using it as a way to connect or reconnect with friends? It’s common to associate food and beverage as a way of socializing, but what if we began to think outside the box and use physical activity instead? Planning a sweat date over sitting down to consume and indulge could be a great way to incorporate daily movement, spark new passions and form healthy habits. Establishing a friendship that is based around physical activity has the potential to keep you feeling supported, motivated and inspired as you continue to strive for your goals. A bond created by physical activity

might even allow you to reach goals sooner and push yourself farther than what you would do on your own. Getting out for a 30-minute brisk walk, taking a class, or going for a cross country ski are all great ways to sweat and feel good together. This month invite a friend to do something they may not typically do, support and inspire them to make their health a priority. You never know, you could be just what they need to take the plunge or ignite a newfound way to enjoy movement each day. After all, movement is medicine and when we support each other, incredible things start to happen. Grab a pal and do this spicy workout together in under 22 minutes either at home or in the gym.

8 round 30s on 10s off • Burpees • Skater

lunge • Mountain climbers • Jump squats

BURPEE SKATER LUNGE

* warm up to this movement by doing the first two rounds as bodyweight squats without the jump. * Modifications: • Burpees: Step or jumping back into plank, bring your body down to the floor or stay in a high plank (speed burpee), feet come to hands as you stand up reaching arms overhead. • Skater lunge: Spice it up by adding a jump. Use arms for momentum while you drive up and out of the front foot. • Mountain climbers: Coming onto forearms if wrists are bothered. Elevate torso by placing hands on a box or edge of a chair.

MOUNTAIN CLIMBER

• Jump squats: If this movement is new to you, begin by doing bodyweight squats. Option to place a box or low chair underneath to sit down onto as a reference point. If doing jump squats ensure you are landing on the entire foot, not just the ball. In all of these movements ensure the body is in alignment, the core is engaged and you are working with your breath. Turning a January “Streak” Into Permanent Change

committed and motivated when you have ongoing support.

by DR. TAINA TURCASSO, N.D., R.M.

A

s one year ends and another begins, many of us are inspired to take stock of our lives and the year that has come to a close and resolve to make some changes come January 1. This year is even more interesting as to some, it is the end of one decade and the beginning of another, so it is a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the last ten years of your life and set some goals for the month, year, and decade to come. This can be a bit overwhelming as there may be multiple things that you want to work on. Real, long-lasting change takes time and for most of us, suddenly changing multiple things at the same time isn’t sustainable. In keeping with the theme of this month’s issue, why not pick something to do every day in January of 2020 with the goal of turning it into a lifelong change, or at least modifying it into a sustainable change? When deciding which change to implement, perhaps start with a short list of changes (top five?) you wish to make to your life in the next few years. Really dedicate the time to consider how it would look to make each of these changes in your life. Consider the following: • How will you implement this change? What is a good way to jumpstart it? Make a plan for how you will actually fit it into your day. Is it something you need to schedule? Do you need to move things around in your schedule to fit it in? How will that impact your job/relationship/family/ time management?

FAMILY WELLNESS

V. CROOME PHOTO

...it is the end of one decade and the beginning of another, so it is a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the last ten years of your life and set some goals for the month, year, and decade to come. • Will it cost money? How much (ie. new gym membership, equipment/ supplies, specialty food items etc.)? Make a budget for each change so you aren’t caught off guard by the cost. • Every change you make in your life will come with obstacles. What will be the obstacles to this change? What will make it hard? Time? Energy? Resistance from other people? Major changes usually require a bit of a shift in your relationships in order to be sustainable. Try to anticipate what these shifts will be and make a backup plan for when things get difficult. • What will be the reaction to this change from the people in your life? Consider telling them about what you are doing and explaining why it’s so important. Maybe there is someone in your life who wants to try this out with you so you have a bit of a “Challenge Buddy.” Likely your whole family will benefit from the change so figure out a way to include them. It’s easier to stay

Once you’ve workshopped every idea on your list, pick one and decide how you will turn the change into your “January Streak.” Will you complete a Whole30 in an effort to eat a cleaner, whole food focused diet? Will you do a walking/challenge where you will go a certain distance every day in an effort to fit exercise into your life? Will you journal everyday for 15 minutes? Meditate daily? Read a chapter of a book every night before bed? Whatever it is, pick the one change that you want to work on first and start by committing publicly and openly so you are less likely to break your commitment. Tell your friends, post it on social media, even document yourself doing said activity. Perhaps you’ll inspire similar change in other people. The most important (and difficult) step is to complete this challenge (hooray!) and then figure out how to implement it into your life long-term. At the end of January, look back at all the work you’ve done, celebrate your commitment and make a list of all the positive and negative (if any) aspects of the challenge. What worked for you? What didn’t? Maybe you liked the physical effects of exercising daily (more energy, better sleep) but didn’t enjoy running itself so you decide to try something else. Maybe you liked how you felt on the Whole30 but felt it was more sustainable to include some whole grains in your diet as well as some occasional treats. The idea is that you have the opportunity to explore this modification and figure out how to fit it into your life in a way that is both manageable long term and is beneficial to you as an individual. This is not one sized fits all. Once you’ve been able to implement one change successfully into your life you can get to work on the next change. It might take three months, it might take six, and it might take two years. Change is ongoing, so take it one step at a time. Happy New Year! FERNIEFIX.COM

A LOOK DOWN SECOND AVE

Home Sweet Home by EMMA POLIT

T

imes have certainly changed in Fernie. Ten years ago, if you wanted to upgrade your couch, it involved a trip to the City. The choice in town was minimal, and the chances of you finding ‘The One’ was pretty much non-existent. These days, we’re lucky. All you have to do is take a walk downtown and stop by Urban Settler, or the new, Elk Valley Furniture Studio, to put together the living room (or the bedroom, or the dining room) of your dreams. Elk Valley Furniture Studio’s motto is, ‘Shop Selection, Shop Local, Shop Price,’ and upon laying my eyes on their new showroom, I knew that my dream of finding the perfect living room was off to a good start. I was instantly fixated on the most divine navy velvet swivel chair (that’s aaalllll of the right words right there) by Dynasty Furniture (a Calgary company). To my delight, it comes in a bigger version, and you can choose any fabric. While I am a HUGE fan of the velvet, I would love it bigger, so I’m putting my order in and have already planned the perfect spot for it by the window (insert dreams of cozying up, with a cup of tea, reading a book). Did you know that we now have a huge selection of area rugs in Fernie?! And, the best part, they have a 5’ x 7’ rug starting at $268! I can’t believe how well priced they are. Elk Valley Furniture Studio currently has 18 rugs hanging from their walls for the perfect viewing opportunity, and they can also provide you with a catalogue with hundreds more so you can find the one that goes *just* right. How long since you have bought a new mattress? I don’t even want to answer that question… let’s just say that it’s probably time for an upgrade. With a selection to meet all budgets and comfort levels (yes,

The beloved Tempur-pedic mattress has material that responds to your body’s temperature, weight and shape for truly personalized comfort and support. to shop to achieve the rustic modern style in your home. When you walk in the doors of the beautiful old Livery building (which is where The Urban Settler calls home), its curated collection of furnishings and décor is like a true calling to the mountains.

You will find all of the décor you need to fill your home, but I want to chat about the furniture. When buying the more Couches, dining tables, coffee tables, beds, significant pieces for your home, there is no mattresses, bedroom settings – be prepared doubt that if you spend a little more, it will to be impressed by not only the quality of last you a lot longer. sofa that has a look that won’t date, can be customized to your choice in fabric and size and is so comfy that you will be excited to fall asleep on it while watching a movie. They have a model on the floor, so go and have a lounge, it’s worth it! On my list of ‘wants’ is a new eightseater dining table. I love a full table with family and friends breaking bread, and the Industrial Steel Base Table has gone straight to the top of the list. It draws inspiration from the vintage industrial factory worktables. It is fully customizable, so you get to pick your wood (and stain), width and length so fitting my crazy (as in, the good crazy) tribe around it will be no problem. Bring on the dinner parties! The Urban Settler has long since established an excellent name when it comes to customization. You name it; they customize it - Sofa’s, dining tables, wood feature walls, cushions, (even towels and sheets). Come in with your dreams and see if they can help you make it happen.

THIS IS LIFE

Motivation and the Five Minute Rule by TYLA CHARBONNEAU

J

anuary can be a tough month. The days are short, it is cold outside, and there are no fun holidays to keep us celebrating. Participating in activities like the Fernie Streak can be really helpful as they get us outside and moving. People often say to me, “Wouldn’t everyone feel better if they just went for a bike ride or ski?” The answer to this question is yes, yes they would. However, for people who experience depression, anxiety, or who have mobility issues, even a walk around the block can feel like summiting Everest. This means that sometimes we need a little help to get motivated. Who can relate to the following: the day was tough, you did not exercise as much as you would like or maybe ate a bunch of junk food. Perhaps you avoided friends or provided selfsoothing with alcohol or Netflix instead of kind words? You lay in bed at night and think, “Okay tomorrow I am going to get up early, call a friend, eat salad for all three meals, and xc ski 15km in the afternoon.” Sounds familiar? We have all been there and then what happens next? Maybe we do some of it, but not likely all of it and then we continue the cycle of beating ourselves up and hoping for a new plan the next day. When caught in this cycle we set our goals so high that they are not always achievable. If we do not accomplish our goals the ‘mean thought monster’ in our brains convinces us we are lazy or a failure. All of this can promote a lack of motivation, sadness, and a lower sense of self. So, what we need to do is trick our brains by making small steps. I mean really small. For example, if you are sitting on the couch thinking about doing an activity and it feels overwhelming, instead of

V. CROOME PHOTO

...for people who experience depression, anxiety, or who have mobility issues, even a walk around the block can feel like summiting Everest. thinking about the entire endeavour tell yourself, “I just have to stand up.” Think about it, standing up seems like a much easier feat than the entire process of a walk, ski, or shovelling the driveway. Once you are up you have a win. Next step: I just have to walk to the door, put on my coat. And so on. The key here is that instead of making massive plans for the ‘mean thought monster’ to sit back, laugh, and say, “yeah you go do that and I will be here waiting to beat you up when you fail,” make smaller, more attainable goals. This way when we achieve them, and potentially more, we can feel good about our accomplishments. Feeling good is

hands down a greater motivator than selfcriticism. Working towards these small goals, one at a time, sets us up for success. Once you practice these ideas you can also add in the five-minute rule: when your brain is convincing you to avoid exercise or a social engagement and you are unsure if you are truly tired or if this is an act of avoidance tell yourself, “You only have to go for five minutes and you can always return home.” Chances are, once you are up and out of the house you will likely have more motivation and once in motion you stay in motion. THE ANSWER GUY

DNS Resolver by KEVIN MCISAAC

T

his month I’m going to tackle a very specific kind of internet problem. This is where a website is not available for you but is available for others. This happened to me last month when a website I host was visible to me, but not to the developer working on it. It took a while to narrow down the cause because to the developer, and some others, it just looks like the website doesn’t exist. Typing in the domain name results in a message along the lines of the domain name https://example.com could not be resolved. The end of that message is the clue as to what’s happening, but before we get to that I’m going to tell you how the internet works. When you make a request on the internet, usually for a domain name, but often a domain name plus a path - this is what’s behind the link you clicked on – something that looks like https://example. com, then the internet gateway you’re connected to tries to look up that name in its domain name cache. If it can’t find it, it asks its server, and so on, until the request gets to the canonical server for all .com domains. It looks up example.com and finds out that server.com is the domain name server (DNS) for example.com. It then sends the request to server.com which responds with the IP address of the physical machine, or its internet gateway. Then your request goes to example.com and hopefully, it responds with something useful. As you can see there are a number of steps that happen for you to get a cat video. The nice thing is that once you’ve made one request to example.com your internet gateway will cache the IP address and the next time you click it’ll return the address for you right away. This is very useful almost all of the time. It breaks when the

physical address of the computer changes. And that brings us back to last month’s problem. When the internet can’t resolve an address there are two possible reasons, the address doesn’t actually exist or the address that the internet believes is the right one isn’t. In this case, there’s a useful tool that you can use to help identify if a site is down or if it’s just you. It’s conveniently called https:// downforeveryoneorjustme.com/ Typing the domain name here will tell you if another server can find the domain. If it can that’s a big clue. It almost always means that your internet gateway’s DNS cache is stale. By stale I mean contains a previously correct address that is no longer correct. When a website is moved its registrar (where the name was registered) has the name servers of the new location updated. This change can take several days to percolate throughout the internet as caches get updated at variable times. Occasionally a cache won’t get updated. That’s what happened last month. The developer has Shaw as their internet provider and Shaw’s DNS cache was stale and not updated so they couldn’t access the site. The solution is to use different DNS servers. Google provides publicly available DNS servers at address 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4. In Windows 10 you can specify that you want to use specific DNS servers and not the ones provided by your internet gateway. There are too many steps to list them all in my limited column space, but they aren’t complicated. You can find out how to do it here: https://tinyurl.com/rb8luky There are other perks to moving to a public DNS Server over your internet provider’s. They could be faster and using them prevents your provider from seeing what sites you’re looking up. Next time you can’t get a site check and see if it’s down for just you or everyone. And if it’s just you, now you can fix it.

January 2020 by ASHLEY KRISTINA

here is a special energy that happens at the change of the year, every year, providing a blank slate and a fresh optimistic start. There is no doubt in my mind that this is why the Gregorian Calendar marks this time of year as the ‘new year.’ Each year is a bit different in its potential and in Chinese Astrology, 2020 brings the year of the Metal Rat- a VERY powerful year ahead, in fact, one of the most powerful years we have seen for some time. It is the rat that wins the race in Chinese astrology. This is the year to get things done and will be nothing like the last five years of retrograde planets and slow movement. One of the biggest days of the entire year occurs on January 12 where we have the big “Saturn-Pluto Conjunction” which astrologers have been talking about for the past decade as this conjunction in Capricorn has not happened since 1284. It is a time of major shifts for humanity. An eclipse happened over the Christmas Full moon and another eclipse happens on the January 10 New Moon that will create life-shifting moments which will take about six months to manifest fully. This is a very auspicious time, blessed and aligned for goodness on this Earth and achievement and manifestations of goals and dreams. A strong force is being provided for the greater good and on an individual level, this is particularly manifesting in relationships and the work environment. The theme of this month is The Exaltation of Destiny. The planets are aligning the soul path of individuals. Now is the time to follow your heart and soul, you will get much farther in life than suppressing it for a definition that you think is more acceptable to society at large, or your closest friends and family. Aries Accomplishment and Attainment - your pioneering ways create momentum

ASTROLOGY

for yourself. The only place you could potentially fail is not shooting high enough. If you have wanted something, now is the time to go for it.

and in your relationship with others. Make your health a top priority as rest can be the best way to achievement. Energy is what is needed for momentum, remember that.

Taurus Initiation - Allow yourself to move with the momentum and powers of change or you will miss the boat if you are too stubborn. Jump over the crevice and you will see with time that it was just a large crack.

Scorpio Establishment - It is time that you take all your power and invest it in your profession. Your recognition within the community is popularized this year and your potential to manifest the dreams and goals you have had in your mind’s eye are very intense. It is time to make your moves.

Gemini Manifestation -You saw this time coming long ago.You knew, and yet the patience required to get here has been existential. All potential energy is mobilized and your visions and dreams manifest. Do not let a shred of doubt enter your mind, stay strong with your truth and do not let your self think of the opposite! Cancer Vulnerability - You must walk on new grounds this month and year and you will feel exposed and tested. We all must go through these periods of growth. Remember that when you want to retreat into your shell, you must do the opposite. If any of you work from home, I suggest renting an office space for some real productivity. Leo Surrender - Trust the divine at this time and do not let your pride and arrogance get the best of you.You are being led another way and it is for your highest good.Your inherent charm will allow you to negotiate a hard bargain with the best of form. Virgo Creation - expand yourself. Pick up an instrument or a paintbrush, write poetry for the one you love, cook, learn a new language. You might be surprised how this time changes the path you walk along. Libra Nurturance - The energy this month is quick-paced and all about time, money and achievement of targeted goals at work

Sagittarius Attain - A good month for you to get your physical self into good health. You will have high motivation in nearly all parts of your life this month and year and getting your body healthy is a good place to start the list, which I can tell you will actually get accomplished this year! Capricorn Prosperity - This is your year.Your strength is full power and the planets are aligned as your greatest allies. There is such a place in energetics as The Tao, you will certainly experience this ease of momentum after years of perseverance. Happy birthday! Aquarius Autonomy - Circumstances align and you will simply have to listen to your inner intuitive voice above all. A change in priorities and direction is probability and your reasoning mind is best stilled during this transition. Meditate instead. Happy birthday to the “early decan” Aquarians. Pisces Independence - Your confidence in yourself is at an all-time high and will continue this entire year as there is a certain clarity about you that is not as typical with your Neptunian influence. The flow of inspiration along with your ingenuity allows for the full manifestation of your heart’s desire. Blessings.
