WELCOME TO FERNIE, BC BY KRISTA TURCASSO
HISTORIC DOWNTOWN FERNIE | MATT KUHN PHOTO
Nestled within the Rocky Mountains in the Southeastern corner of British Columbia is a small mountain town with an extremely big personality. Welcome, you’ve found us here in Fernie. Rich with a history in coal mining, with stories of discovery and immigration, perseverance and entrepreneurship, recreation and community. This town has survived it all and has grown to become a coveted destination, internationally. While coal might have been what initially lured people to this beautiful valley, it was not long before they started looking around, noticing the beautiful Elk River and many drainages feeding into it. The mountains, and the opportunities those slopes provide. The views - oh the views! As the only town in Canada completely encircled by the
Rocky Mountains, and with a downtown with a ski hill seemingly at its end, you’ll soon understand why it’s difficult to go about your day without stopping to take in the view… unless, we’re socked in and the snow is falling heavily from the sky. For all of these reasons, alongside coal mining, Fernie became a place people wanted to set down roots. This trend has continued. Residents, second home owners and visitors want to learn about Fernie’s past and be a part of its future. They want to get involved, be active, and create togetherness. It’s what makes Fernie
so attractive and distinctive, this diverse and dedicated community of people from around the world, who have worked hard to call Fernie home. This rich history and the journey many businesses, residents and their families have been on to make it in this town is the thread that binds it together. While walking down Main Street, also known as the Historic Downtown, you are instantly aware of the brick and stone buildings. After two fires, building with these materials became mandatory. Since then, these buildings have WELCOME continued on next page

FERNIE FACTS
Founded in 1897 and incorporated as the City of Fernie in 1904 Location: Southeast corner of British Columbia, Canada, the only city-class municipality in Canada that is fully encircled by the Rocky Mountains. Just 45 minutes from both the Alberta and US borders. Population: 5,249 permanent residents with an additional 2,000 outside city limits and a substantial seasonal population in both winter and summer. SKATING AT MAIDEN LAKE | VINCE MO PHOTO
been restored beautifully, many showcasing historical photographs to share their story. This street is also home to a very vibrant business community, entrepreneurs with unique products and services, restaurants and cafés, passionate about what they do. This passion spreads to many areas of Fernie life – community resources, development, recreation and the result is a continual evolution of positive change, as residents and visitors alike are involved and invested. They care deeply for this town and are proud of Fernie, what it was and what it is becoming… every aspect and individual, working together to ensure Fernie only continues to become a better version of itself. This is the inspiration behind the Fernie Fix monthly magazine and seasonal guides – to share this love and passion with you and to
share with you the authentic Fernie. In both publications, we feature the people who are making a difference within the community or within their field. From young athletes like Sam Goodison, being inspired by the Freestyle Club and working hard to get to the next level, to Kevin Dunn who alongside his partners found a niche for their business and created Brooks Creek Ranch. In these pages you will meet a variety of people devoted to this community, some sharing their secret stashes or favourite ways to discover this town, others providing a range of ideas and suggestions on what to do while here. For additional resources, visit our website at Ferniefix.com. We apologise, as once you start to dive into all that Fernie truly has on offer, you might come to the conclusion that one trip is not enough… and that’s okay, because we would love to have you back!
Snowfall: Situated in the Elk Valley, Fernie has its own microclimate with approximately 360 cm of snow in town and 875 cm on the hill. Temperature: Average temperature is –11 C in the winter. The Griz: Fernie’s powder legend that points his musket to the clouds to promote snowfall from the skies. The Ghostrider: Located on Mt. Hosmer, a distinctive image of a horse and rider rumoured to be the ghost of an angry Aboriginal Chief and his daughter pursuing William Fernie. Best seen as the sun sets, but more noticeable in summer. Fernie Alpine Resort: Previously known as Fernie Snow Valley, is going into its 57th season! Catskiing: Fernie is home to Island Lake Catskiing, celebrating 30 years, and Fernie Wilderness Adventures going on 33! Festivals: Fernie’s biggest winter festival is Griz Days, in honour of the Griz and the amazing champagne powder Fernie is known for. Held over the first weekend in March, this is an event not to be missed. Additionally, there is the Festival of Lights, multiple Film Fests, a Nordic festival, and a music festival hosted by Shred Kelly that round out the cultural feel of Fernie winters.

RECREATION It’s no surprise that Fernie is host to a growing number of indoor and outdoor activities that increasingly draw recreational enthusiasts of all backgrounds and interests. Dedicated individuals and organisations work towards enhancing this attractive quality of Fernie, realising what an asset it has become for residents and visitors alike. Even with the shorter days of winter, the accessibility of recreational opportunities means you have options. Grab your icebugs and head for a run on Montane’s multi-use trails, or a Nordic ski at the Elk Valley Nordic Centre in the morning, catch the opening of Cedar Bowl in the afternoon. And you still have the evening to unwind at a spa or studio before enjoying a culinary experience.
SAM GOODISON FREESTYLE SKIER
Anyone who has visited Fernie knows that recreation plays an important role in our economy and within our community. Growing up in Fernie enabled me to enjoy these activities from a very young age which makes it easy to get hooked. Once you have skied for a few years as a kid it’s hard to imagine life without it. I started skiing when I was about two years old. Both of our parents had grown up skiing so for J.J. and I it was a no-brainer. After casually skiing for many years, I decided to join Fernie Freestyle, which along with my dad, taught me the basic skills I needed to know about Freestyle skiing. The stoke level was always high and there was always an encouraging environment which allowed the athletes to progress while still having lots of fun. This was one of the reasons that helped me decide to pursue my dreams as a Mogul Skier. Fernie has always been a great place to pursue a sport of any kind, because of how supportive we are as a community. I have been absent from school two to three weeks at a time, and the teachers have been nothing but understanding. It’s really sick to see how everyone cooperates and works as one! I have seen how much Fernie has progressed and I think it will continue to do so. We have even more incentives to encourage sport and

kids who are even more keen on sending it. After having skied and travelled to quite a few places, I always come back to Fernie and forget the little things I have taken for granted. Fernie is rad. Q. When the Valley is coated with 30cm of fresh powder, I immediately... A. Call Mrs. Christenson to let her know I will not be at school.
Q. The best way to explore Fernie in Winter is… A. With your skis and your homies. Q. My favourite way to unwind in town is… A. Find the nearest unoccupied hot tub. Q. Don’t leave Fernie without… A. Visiting Nature Bob.

SNOW SHOE ROUTES TO EXPLORE THIS WINTER BY KRISTA TURCASSO
GABRIELA ESCOBAR ARI PHOTO
Sometimes, when the snow flies covering the valley in a blanket of white, fluffy powder, instead of heading to the hill with the masses, a solo walk meandering in the trees is just what you need. Here are three of my three favourite places to “get lost” in winter.
Mt. Proctor - Fairy Creek Falls Difficulty: Green Distance: 5km out and back Time: 1.5-2 hrs This is a popular hike done by all ages, all year round, as it takes you to the base of the Fairy Creek Falls. Stunning vistas, easy terrain and access make this trail a great and quick option any day! It does see a fair bit of traffic, so consider a pair of Icebugs if it’s packed down and pick up the pace! The best way to access this trail is from the Chamber of Commerce/Visitor Info Centre. You’ll see where the trail begins to the right of the Centre, continuing behind as it climbs up the bank to connect to the Proctor trails. Don’t be discouraged - this is literally the only climbing of your journey! Once you reach the bench, you will continue left and walk alongside and above Fairy Creek as you make your way to the falls. Once you’ve arrived, enjoy the views and return the way you came. If you’re keen on breaking trail, consider climbing up Swine Flu and enjoy vistas overlooking the town of Fernie!

Provincial Park Happy Gilmar Loop Difficulty: Blue Distance: 5km loop Time: 1.5-2 hrs A beautiful canopy of trees awaits you in the Provincial Park, and there is just something meditative about walking through here. The light filters through branches, highlighting features and creating shadows. Sounds of snow falling around you, and crunching beneath your feet. It is definitely worth exploring, and Happy Gilmar is just one option of many! Add to this loop for a bigger day, I’ve connected to Galloway to make my way over to the ski hill to join friends for après at the Griz Bar! Park at the Provincial Park overflow lot (first left after the Elk Valley Nordic Centre). Take the Bridge View Connector Trail, and stay left onto Sherwoody. Continue left on Stumpy
Woody, and turn right to stay on this trail. Continue onto Happy Gilmar, taking a right down Happy Gilmar completing a circle and connecting back with Sherwoody. Take the same route home!
Island Lake Lodge Rail and Old Growth Trail Difficulty: Blue Distance: 6km one way Time: 2-2.5 hrs If you haven’t ever visited the Old Growth Forest at Island Lake Lodge, this is a must. Even if you have in the summer months, this is still a must. These ancient beauties are magnificent in contrast with the stark white snow, and working your way between them as you climb to the Lodge is a fantastic way to spend a morning. May I suggest booking lunch ahead of time, and considering a spa package? Turn it into a day and enjoy the cat ride all the way down.
To access this route, drive past the Provincial Park until you arrive at the Island Lake lower parking lot. The trail begins from the end of the upper of two lots with the Rail Trail. This trail is relatively flat, staying on the left side of the trail, and then crossing to the right where it brings you to the Old Growth parking lot. Here, you will cross the road again to the Old Growth trail head. Flat at first, soon you will be climbing steeper switchbacks. Stop at the Cabin Bowl intersection and take in the view before continuing. Once you reach the lake, stay right and make your way to the Lodge for a deserved reward! For more trail options, pick up a Trail Map at any of the ski shops or at the Info Centre, and make sure to visit FernieFix.com as we include all of our previous years’ routes here as well! Enjoy exploring this winter!

WINTER 2018|19 › Recreation A shake of the snow globe and braapcountry enthusiasts find ourselves on the heels of another legendary winter in the Elk Valley. Emerging as one of BC’s best snowmobile destinations, Fernie serves up out-the-door, easy access to a delicious buffet of terrain suitable for a variety of powder palates.
The Fernie Snowmobile Association (FSA) works diligently with government and private land owners to secure access to five distinct riding zones in addition to providing services and amenities for trail users. The core 160km trail network up Coal Creek and Morrissey are groomed three nights a week with intermittent grooming at other locations when conditions permit. In addition to the Ram and Rolling Hills warming shelters, the FSA constructed an all new day-use Wrangler’s Cabin in summer 2018 to accommodate growing user numbers in the area. New bridges, expanded parking, and trailhead facilities have also been upgraded over the summer. Be sure to check out the events calendar, grooming schedule, trail conditions and more online at ferniesnowmobile.com.

Key Information Day passes are available for purchase at trailheads for $25. All off-road vehicles in BC require provincial registration and insurance. The Elk Valley has several access management areas established to protect wildlife corridors, sensitive ecosystems and to provide opportunities for nonmotorized recreation areas. If you are new to the area or to sledding in general, reduce your learning curve by hiring a professional to show you the ropes. An experienced hand to help you understanding backcountry hazards, throttle control, body positioning, and how to make the machine work for you (instead of you working for the machine!) will contribute to a safe and more enjoyable experience. Those ready to venture out on their own can access novice riding via the popular Coal Creek trailhead. Travel 16km up the wide, groomed trail to reach the Rolling Hills Cabin which features a variety of nearby playzones suitable for all abilities. Two trails extend beyond the Rolling Hills cabin to reach the new Wrangler’s shelter. These can be enjoyed as a loop for a great trail ride or the facility is also accessible from the Morrissey Staging area via a 17km groomed trail. Early risers can catch first tracks in the neighbouring open meadow or climb up the pipeline to reach the Notch for
some of Fernie’s best open glade riding and un-paralleled mountain views. Beyond the core groomed trails, exceptional riding can also be found in the Corbin, Ram, and Hartley recreation zones. These areas are groomed less often but provide access to alpine bowls and great technical riding opportunities for advanced sledders with suitable training and experience.
Know Before You Go: Get the Gear: Avalanche equipment, sled rentals, clothing and airbag refills are available at Gearhub and Ghostrider Motorsports. Get the Training: Elk Valley Snow Shepherds offers avalanche training, guides, and riding clinics. Wier Boondocking offers riding clinics and lessons.
Get the Forecast: Avalanche Canada provides updated bulletins, weather, and field observations for the Elk Valley. Be sure to check out the educational and entertaining AvCanada South Rockies Field Team conditions reports on YouTube and Instagram. Get the Picture: Understand where you will be sledding and note the changing hazards throughout the day. Don’t hesitate to adjust your riding plan accordingly to more conservative terrain choices. Get out of Harm’s Way: Practice safe travel techniques and terrain management skills. Only one rider on a slope at a time, watch your buddies from a safe location, do not group in exposed terrain. CROSS-COUNTRY SKIING BY MADELEINE BRAGG
ELK VALLEY NORDIC CENTRE | VINCE MO PHOTO
Fernie offers some of the finest cross-country skiing in all of the Kootenays. The Fernie Nordic Society offers Nordic skier only trails at the Fernie Golf Club in town and at the Elk Valley Nordic Centre near Mount Fernie Provincial Park. There is also Nordic skiing to be found on Island Lake Road from the lower parking lot, in the Montane area of Fernie, and up at Fernie Alpine Resort. So to help you make the most of it, we’ve put together a few of our favourite loops for you to enjoy!
Fernie Golf Club Beginner Begin at the Clubhouse and you’ll see a trail gently descending (not the steep descent at the kiosk but the trail to the North of the building). Quite early on another trail crosses but stay straight on the gentle descent. The trail will curve right and flatten out. When the snowpack is deep enough, there may be an option to cruise through the tighter trees. Take whichever route catches your fancy, they meet back up again. Stay right at the next couple junctions to find the straight shot
back to the Clubhouse past the duck ponds and over the bridges.
Elk Valley Nordic Centre Cedar Loop - Intermediate Begin at the Elk Valley Nordic Centre Warming Hut and staging area. At the first two junctions go left, after that stay straight until you come to a split with the choice to turn right to go over the Teck Bridge or begin a climb to the left. Stay left at this junction and start a short but very punchy climb with a sharp turn to the left. At the top of the climb the terrain flattens out quite nicely offering some quick skiing around the top of the plateau. Stay to the right to take advantage of all these trails have to offer before descending and turning right again to head back to the Warming Hut.
Elk Valley Nordic Centre Galloway and Cedar Loops Advanced Begin at the Elk Valley Nordic Centre
Warming Hut and staging area. At every junction you come to, go right, until the right turn that is the connector to Fernie Alpine Resort. Do Not go right there as this trail takes you to FAR and does not loop back to the EVNC. Instead stay on the Galloway Loop and then take every right to get back to the Cedars and climb up Lizard Lookout hill to find the beautiful Cedars Loop. Keep taking every right to find your way back to the Warming Hut and staging area. May we suggest enjoying this loop on a weekend so you can relax on the couches in front of the wood burning stove after? The above loops are groomed regularly for both classic and skate skiing. These trails are very Nordic skier friendly and do not have dogs, hikers or snowshoers on them. You can purchase a season’s membership or day pass at Fernienordic.com/membership or by dropping cash off at the trail entrance kiosks. Madeleine Bragg is a passionate Nordic skier and the administrator of the Fernie Nordic Society.

SPOTS AT FAR FOR THE BEST DAY EVER BY JENI PEARSON AND CALI SAMMEL
CRUISER | HENRY GEORGI PHOTO
It’s 7am on another powder day. Time to check the snow report while sipping your morning coffee and planning the day ahead. If mornings can be a little tough, consider this handy schedule that includes helpful advice from those who know the hill best - the staff at Fernie Alpine Resort, with favourite stashes and runs from each of the five bowls to keep you smiling all day long.
The New Side Everyone knows the morning is likely the best time to find those untracked stashes from last night’s snowfall. If getting up and at it is your game, head up the Timber Chair for your first runs of the day and make your way to these spots. Siberia Bowl - Falling Star (#1 – Blue) and Morning Glory (#2 – Black) Stretch it out and start the day by warming up on our longest run! Falling Star will get those legs burning and ready for the day ahead (all 5kms of it). This well-groomed, wide trail is a great way to start things off.
Alternatively, and for more advanced riders Morning Glory has great morning light (hence the name), a good pitch and nice tree spacing. Looking for those powder stashes and untouched spots on the mountain? Look no further! Next, head back up the Timber Chair and make your way down to the White Pass Chair and get on over to Timber Bowl!
challenging terrain in the trees. Hint: 3/4’s of the way down take a right onto Trespass trail to get you back to the White Pass Chair for a faster lap! For those looking for a less challenging Timber Bowl run, try out Silver Lining. Silver Lining isn’t as busy as the popular Heartland or Highline runs meaning you can find little powder stashes on the sides of the run all morning!
Timber Bowl – Silver Lining (#15 – Blue) and Surprize (#98 – Black)
After exploring Timber Bowl, take the White Pass Chair up and head into Currie Bowl for a powderful run before lunch!
You’ll be hard pressed to find a rider who doesn’t love a Surprize. Surprize is laden with

SNAKE | NICK NAULT PHOTO
Currie Bowl – Currie Powder (#19 – Blue) and Sky Dive (#33 - Black) What can we say about Currie Bowl… wait, what can’t we say about Currie Bowl? Powder stashes are so plentiful in this bowl that skiers and boarders often line up waiting for patrol to drop the rope and open the bowl. If you haven’t experienced the infamous “Currie Rope Drop” you need to add it to your bucket list this season. Once in Currie, intermediate riders will love Currie Powder. This vast blue trail winds through the upper part of the bowl and like the name suggests, through mellow fields of powder on powder days and a consistent, well-groomed run on those other days. Advanced riders - traverse across towards the “Big 3” named for the three runs side by side at the end of the Bowl. Our recommendation, hit Sky Dive. It’s one of the best pitches on the mountain (and a long one, too) - nothing beats getting first tracks down Sky Dive after a fresh snowfall. Runs through Currie Bowl connect you to lower mountain runs which take you back to the base for a well-deserved refuel.
The Old Side After warming up with some nachos in the Griz Bar or a selection from our taco and
poutine items in Legends Mountain Eatery, it’s time to head back out! This time, explore the Old Side starting at the Elk Chair, and then the Bear Chair to take you into the famous Lizard Bowl. Lizard Bowl - Easter Bowl (#49 – Black) and Dancer (#50 – Blue) Lizard Bowl is full of classic runs and is home to Lizard Headwall, the most recognised and photographed feature towering above the resort. Ask any local and undoubtedly many would say that Easter Bowl is one of their top choices. Easter Bowl can be reached via both the Currie and Lizard Bowls, with tight trees to open glades and plenty of powder pockets! To access Easter Bowl via the Lizard Bowl, cross the Lizard Traverse all the way until you reach the end of the traverse. Side step or hike up a short way up into the trees and shred it up! If trees aren’t your thing then try Dancer (same route without the hike up). A classic run with good fall line and grooming. Since many riders tend to duck off the Lizard Traverse early to hit Arrow, Bow or Cascade, Dancer is a great afternoon delight and known for being in good shape all day long. Once you have Lizard Bowl out of your system, head back up the Bear Chair and
into Cedar Bowl to end the day with a bang! Cedar Bowl – Cruiser (#78 - Blue) and Snake Main (#82 - Black) Cedar Bowl is another one of those runs wellloved by locals, with lots of natural rollers and fall lines, it also offers some of the most amazing vistas and views on the mountain. Aptly named Cruiser is… well it’s cruisey and a great way for intermediate riders to explore and be introduced to Cedar Bowl. For more advanced skiers, continue along the traverse to the Snake Ridge area, where the snow is known to be some of the deepest at the resort. Snake Main is a great run to start, it has an epic fall line and is known for its face shots of snow. Snake Ridge stays freshest the longest – try Blueberry and Snake Glades for your second passes through Cedar Bowl.
Après After all of that, you deserve a pint! Time to go back to the legendary Griz Bar, our favourite après ski bar that’s been ‘keepin’ rippers ripped’ since 1962. If fancy cocktails are more your style, visit the Cirque Restaurant & Bar in Lizard Creek Lodge. The Vodka Ice Bar sounds cold (and is cold) but vodka has been known to warm you up from the inside out and might help soothe those aching muscles as well.

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A CAT SKIER BY MIKE WILSON
The Lizard Range’s wild and rugged peaks seem to have a knack for capturing moist weather patterns holding them hostage while snow falls hard and heavy for days. This makes Fernie the ideal winter playground for countless outdoor pursuits. Atop many winter sport enthusiasts’ bucket lists, Cat Skiing. Why wouldn’t it be? Deep blower untracked snow, powder smiles, bottomless turns and weightlessness. These are a few things that come to mind. We are lucky to have two Cat Ski outfits here in Fernie that have both been in operation for over 30 years. Fernie Wilderness Adventures and Island Lake Lodge are synonymous with good times on snow. Though I have never had the chance to experience a day at Fernie Wilderness Adventures, I’ve been fortunate to have had many at Island Lake. A day of Cat Skiing starts early and feels even earlier from a lack of sleep due to the anticipation and excitement the evening before. At Island Lake the day begins with a Snow Cat ride up through an ancient Old Growth Cedar Forest to a series of beautiful luxury back country lodges. Stepping into the Bear Lodge you are greeted with hot coffee and Lodge-made pastries along with an introduction to the guiding team and an overview of the day’s conditions. Next there is a safety briefing which includes important lessons on how to use the equipment provided in your day pack, a shovel, probe and beacon. You are skiing in avalanche prone terrain so naturally safety is the number one priority. Now it’s time to once again board the snow cat, the stoke is
high and the music inside your deluxe Cat is pumping. Even if you don’t know the other 10-12 people there is a unique bond quickly formed that is hard to duplicate in other types of ski experiences. Your first run is generally a mellow one and gives the guides a chance to assess the group’s skiing ability. Some of the guides at Island Lake have been with the company for over 25 years; they are extremely knowledgeable on the terrain and provide great stories and jokes throughout the day to keep you entertained. There are plenty of snacks, sandwiches, wraps, treats and refreshments aboard your cat. In an effort to maximise vertical, which on average at Island Lake is 12,000-15,000 vertical feet of skiing each day, lunch is enjoyed on a ride up to your next run. After 10-12 runs of the best powder skiing you have ever had, through perfectly gladed trees and high alpine bowls it’s time to wind things down.
At the end of your final run and with a giant beaming powder smile on your face, the Snow Cat meets your group with cold locally brewed craft beer from Fernie Brewing. If this wasn’t enough you are then transported back to the Bear Lodge for an Après Ski including a delicious spread of fondue, nachos or pizza put out by the talented culinary team at Island Lake. Stories of the day’s shred are shared with your group over another cold beer then before you know it you’re back aboard the cat getting whisked down through the snow choked Cedar Forest back to civilisation. Was it all a dream? Mike Wilson is Tasting Room and Retail Manager at Fernie Brewing Company, and one of those enthusiasts he mentioned above! Don’t forget to head to 26 Manitou Road to order a flight - all money from these are donated to local charities, with over $100,000 donated back into the community so far!

THE EVOLUTION OF FAT BIKING BY TROY NIXON The Fernie fat biking community has taken off with new trails, new riders and yes, newer technology which for some bikers means a new fat bike. In the last five years we went from one or two trails available culminating in a 5km loop, to over 40kms plus open for riding. If you ride in the summer, then riding in the winter is a logical extension and if you haven’t tried it you should give it a spin. Spinning is what it is all about. Slow, methodical and peaceful are just a few of the words that come to mind when riding through the quiet forest. It’s a great workout that supplements the dreary ‘pain cave’ which some riders endure daily. Obviously, our legendary powder days mean skiing but mediocre snow days are the new bike days! Whether you are here for a weekend or a season, give it a try!
Fat Biking Essentials 1. Obviously, a fat bike. Rent or borrow one first. Rentals are available in multiple places in the valley. If you take the plunge then Straight Line, Gear Hub, Guides Hut and the Ski/Bike Base can hook you up with a new steed. 2. Helmet and eyewear. Wear a bike helmet with a lightweight toque or beanie. A buff is a good option in case it gets cold. For me, sunglasses work well but some friends wear goggles for the ride down. 3. It’s all about the layers (overdressing is bad). Merino wool is the best as it wicks the moisture away from your skin and can
be worn several times before it needs to be washed. Try a merino layer with a bike jersey (for the pockets) over top and then a shell that can cut the wind for the ride down. The ride down is the coldest part of the ride, as you are now a little sweaty so this is where an outer layer truly comes in handy. ‘Less is more’ means dress for ten degrees warmer than it truly is. 4. Footwear and pedals. Some experts say to go with flat pedals before progressing to clipless. I now have deluxe 45North boots that arrived a couple of Christmases ago. They are the bomb and my feet haven’t been cold since. Prior to this I wore merino socks, Shimano shoes and a Pearl Izumi overshoe on top. An alternative option is to use flat pedals and a wear a pair of winter boots. 5. Hands. Bar Mitts are so toasty that I have taken off my summer bike gloves while riding in the winter. Personally they are a must if you plan to winter ride. Those who dislike the Bar Mitts because of reduced mobility go for lobster mitts and seem to have great success in keeping their hands warm.
Where to Ride 1. Critical mass dictates where the riding will be good. More riders and snow shoers means that the trails get packed down, resulting in better riding!
NICK NAULT PHOTO
2. Check your local bike shop for information on the best fat biking trails this winter. 3. Trailforks is a great resource to use. Riders post conditions after the ride and can leave comments if the trail is good to go. 4. Facebook has a public group called Fernie Fat Bike where people ask questions, give trail conditions and post about equipment etc. The group is quite responsive to queries as we are all very involved with the sport. 5. Strava is another tool that can be used effectively for winter biking. Members of the Fernie Mountain Bike Club have their own feed that you can follow and see rides, duration and photos. 6. There will be a loop groomed this winter at Montane (stay off Nordic trails please!), Lazy Lizard from the Provincial Park will be groomed regularly, and Fernie Alpine Resort offers grooming as well! Additional loops are in the works, so stay up to date by visiting bikefernie.ca or the Fat Bike group on Facebook! Above all else, get out and have fun. Remember, trails may be multi-use and include snow shoers and trail runners. And never, ever fat bike on Nordic groomed trails! Troy Nixon is a passionate, four season biker and the current President of the Fernie Mountain Bike Club.

TOP TEN FAMILY WINTER FUN BY KRISTA TURCASSO
NICK NAULT PHOTO
If you’re visiting Fernie with your family, you will be happily surprised to find the number of amenities available here for the younger cohort (and also those young at heart). As the number of families continues to grow, so does the programming, facilities and events geared to this market… and really, it’s to the benefit of us all, providing a great resource not just for those residing here, but those visiting. Educational programming, outdoor pursuits, arts and culture opportunities, and a whole lot of fun! Here are our top ten for you to explore this winter! 1. Swimming. The Fernie Aquatic Centre is a multi-purpose indoor facility that is great for all ages, with four bodies of water including a pool for small children, rope swing and a slide, sauna and steam rooms, pool-viewing area, and fitness centre. Visit fernie.ca for more information. 2. Hit the Slopes. Fernie Alpine Resort has a myriad of opportunities for kids of all ages. Children under five can receive a Tiger Pass for just $20, which offers full mountain access. The Magic Carpet is a great place to start, with the Mighty Moose next in line. The Winter Sport School has lesson programs for all ages, and day care is available on
mountain. A popular evening choice is night skiing Saturdays 4-9pm. Skifernie.com 3. Nordic Skiing. There are various options depending on the level and length of time you and your family would like to be out on the trails. The Fernie Golf Club offers a shorter, flat route perfect for a quick escape or those just learning. Montane off Coal Creek Rd. offers groomed trails as well, with undulating terrain, and the Elk Valley Nordic Centre offers numerous trails and loops including a beginner loop. The Fernie Nordic Society hosts many events great for wee ones throughout the winter season. Fernienordic.com.
4. Tobogganing. Sitting at the base of a valley, Fernie has some hills and when they are covered with snow, they offer a whole lot of opportunity. One of the more popular areas for tobogganing in town is just behind the Dirt Jump Park, adjacent to the Aquatic Centre. There is a parking area at the base, where you can set up your tailgate snacks and hot chocolate, and kids can walk as high as they like on this fast slope! There is also a slope at Fernie Alpine Resort, to the left of the Mighty Moose, and tailgating is also an option as you watch your kids slide or ski in the evening! FAMILY FUN continued on next page

WINTER 2018|19 › RECREATION 5. Events. Throughout the season, there are many events hosted with kids in mind! The Festival of Lights kicks things off November 10 at 6pm. Try to hit one of the workshops leading up to the festival to build your own lantern! In December, don’t miss the Christmas Play by Heart and Soul Dance Collective, Do They Know It’s Christmas: Back to the 80s at the Arts Station. Also watch for Fernie Alpine Resort’s family friendly New Year’s celebration, and their Griz Kids’ Carnival in the New Year! Another not to miss event is Shred Kelly’s Stoke Fest. This popular local band goes out of their way to include a kid-specific concert earlier in the evening and it is a big hit. There is so much more, so make sure to keep checking FernieFix.com to see what is happening during your stay! 6. Indoor Climbing. A great indoor option to break up your time in the great outdoors! There are two climbing walls in Fernie, one located at the College of the Rockies and the other at Evolution Health and Fitness. Both walls are available for you and your family. The College has set times with the opportunity to book a specific date and time, 1-866-423-4691. The Rock Garden at Evolution has a schedule, which includes family climb time, preschool climbing, and No School Fridays Kid’s climbing. Evolutionhealth.ca 7. Community Programming. We are so lucky to have an abundance of family programs available in Fernie, including Kindergym at the Fernie Family Centre, Toddlertime and Storytime at the Fernie Heritage Library, and Parent and Tot Fun Time at the Knox United Church. All of these programs and others are either free or carry a small fee for you and your children. Ekkids.ca. 8. Skating. There is nothing quite like skating outdoors. In town, skating on the Annex Pond, Maiden Lake or at the rink at the Fernie Court House (weather dependent) is a popular pastime. New last year, a fullsized outdoor rink was built adjacent to the Aquatic Centre! If it’s more of an indoor day, the Memorial Arena hosts public skating regularly. There is also drop-in Adult Shinny, Skate and Shoot and Youth Shinny. Visit Fernie.ca for further details.

SUE CLARKSON REGISTERED NURSE
When I tell people I am a registered nurse in a ski town, they usually assume that I work in orthopedics. It makes sense – people have been known to break a few bones here and there. But nursing involves a broad range of specialties. I have found my passion working with youth and families with a focus on health promotion. Instead of hospital nursing, I work for two non-profit organisations, and spend my time either helping to prevent unplanned pregnancies or supporting women throughout their pregnancy and first year of parenthood. Two local programs that are such a benefit to our town! I moved to Fernie from Whistler in 1999 and worked with committed stakeholders to start up a sexual health clinic – Fernie Options For Sexual Health (Opt). I work with a great team of local physicians and ten trained, dedicated volunteers. The clinic provides sexual and reproductive services for all ages, all genders, and all orientations. It is busy and continually growing among both local and seasonal residents! In addition to clinical services, Opt delivers sexual health education in schools. Empowering youth to make informed decisions, to respect each other, and to embrace diversity is incredibly rewarding for me. But nursing in a small town means I get to wear more than one hat. I also have the privilege to work with moms and babes at Bellies to Babies. It is a wonderful program offered through the Fernie Women’s Resource Centre. We provide pre and postnatal support to families in the Elk Valley, including nutrition and health counselling,

PREPARE FOR WINTER WITH PILATES BY KATE RICHARDSON
One of the primary objectives of the pilates method is increasing adaptability – the body’s ability to adjust and respond to challenges that it meets; a skill that comes in handy when cruising down the mountainside on your mode of choice. Your squats, lunges and balance exercises are important prep for the winter season, but try adding these five basic pilates exercises to your usual regimen. They will help you to move better and more efficiently in your regular exercises, and on the slopes.
BREATHING
SINGLE LEG STRETCH
KNEE SWAYS
SINGLE LEG KICK
SINGLE LEG KICK WITH FOAM ROLLER
Breathing Inhale through your nose, and exhale through your mouth. Focus on where the air wants to go and what activates when you inhale and exhale. Ideally, you want to expand your rib cage maximally in all directions as you inhale. Typically, it’s easy to breathe into the front of your rib cage, but difficult to breathe into the back, so focus on bringing air into the back of your rib cage. Notice the expansion that occurs in your mid and upper back as a result. When you exhale, imagine that a belt is tightening around your waist to help to squeeze the last bit of air out. Once you get the idea, try taking a few breaths like this at various points throughout the day, in different positions – biking, driving, standing. This will help to connect you to your body, bring awareness to your posture, and bring oxygen into your body more effectively.
Single leg stretch Lying on your back, lift your head and shoulders, hug one knee in tightly to your chest and extend the other away from you with as much length as possible. Breathe as above as you alternate legs. Maximise the compression in your bent leg, and the length in your extended leg, and focus on controlling both legs from your centre.
Knee Sways Lying on your back, cross one knee over the other and draw your inner thighs together. Inhale and let your knees fall to one side, keeping your opposite shoulder down on the ground, as if wringing your body out like a sponge. Exhale and untwist – starting with the ribs, then lower back, then pelvis. Breathe as described above. Do a few each way, then switch legs.
Single Leg Kick Lie on your stomach with your hands under your hips. Slowly bend one knee at a time without letting the pressure of your hips on your hands change. Think about breathing and lengthening through your trunk and hips; this will help you to keep your pelvis and hips still as you bend your knee. Next, try this on a foam roller to add a quad release.
Roll Downs Stand against the wall with your feet a few inches in front of you, knees soft. Breathe as above as you peel yourself off of the wall one vertebra, or spinal section, at a time, starting with your head and finishing with
ROLL DOWNS your sacrum. Then roll back up the wall and re-stack your spine one vertebra at a time. Notice which parts of your back roll off the wall easily and which parts feel stuck. Important note: if you feel pain or discomfort doing any of these exercises, do not continue. Kate Richardson is a former Olympic level gymnast, physiotherapist and pilates instructor at Mountain Life Pilates who combines the pilates method with therapeutic principles to help clients feel empowered by moving better. mountainlifepilates.com

ARTS AND CULTURE Museum exhibits, plays, art shows, musical events, pottery seminars, opera screenings… Fernie is home to a rich and vibrant arts and culture scene. From the many private art studios and galleries, to the Arts Station, Heritage Library and Fernie Museum and their packed winter schedules, to festivals littered throughout the season, to the restaurants and bars filling the gaps with live entertainment and weekly events, individuals and organisations are responding to the demand and each year continues to impress. Stay up to date at FernieFix.com to ensure you are up to date and don’t miss “that event” everyone will be talking about…
JACKIE GRAHAM THE ARTS STATION
I used to want to be an artist, but I very quickly learned I had little artistic talent. So when I went to university, I chose to study art history and business, with the idea that if I couldn’t make art, I could facilitate those who could. After my undergrad, I went on to get my Masters in Arts Management in London. When I moved back home to Montreal, I worked for a nonprofit visual arts centre, where I helped with the organisation of programming, grants, and implementation of artist-run workshops. I had originally planned to go into the more commercial side of the arts and culture sector, but my experience in a nonprofit quickly changed my mind. Since then, I’ve been interested in nonprofits whose missions are to facilitate community participation in arts and culture. My decision to move to Fernie was made on a whim, and I never imagined that I would be lucky enough to find a job in my field as quickly as I did. Working for the Fernie and District Arts Council has been such a rewarding experience, because it’s given me an opportunity to get to know a large part of the community on a personal level. I’ve moved around my whole life, and have never been very firmly rooted anywhere, but with this position at the Arts Station, I feel like a local. Because it’s a small town, I feel that the work I do makes more of an impact within the community, and I can see the results of it with every successful event, gallery show, or workshop. I haven’t been here very long, so I can’t speak to how the arts and culture sector in Fernie has changed, but from what I’ve seen, it is only growing and becoming more ambitious and inclusive. With such a dedicated community, I wouldn’t expect anything less.

A.Since I work at the daycare on the hill, I spend many powder days inside hanging out with all the kids while their parents are out enjoying the snow! When I do get a chance to get out, a good chunk of time is usually spent ignoring my boyfriend’s attempts to correct my technique! Q. The best way to explore Fernie in Winter is… A. Other than spending the day on the hill, I really enjoy walking along the river on sunny winter days. This year I’m going to learn how
to cross country ski, and I have a feeling that is going to be my new favourite way to explore the trails around town. Q. My favourite way to unwind in town is… A. Hanging out at one of the cafés like Mugshots or The Valley Social, depending on which board game I’m in the mood for that day. Q. Don’t leave Fernie without… A. Taking some time to hike the Three Sisters. The views are fantastic, and ending off at Island Lake is the perfect finish to a fun couple days.

INSIDE ARCHITECTURE EXPLORING FERNIE’S HISTORICAL INTERIORS BY REBECCA HALL
Fernie’s historic buildings are well known for distinctive rooflines, unique locally-fired rose-gold brick and stone, and a variety of international influences. Only a few original interiors remain although many hints of the past can be seen in pressed tin ceilings, smoke-stained exposed brickwork and vintage windows.
FERNIE COURTHOUSE
Of the few more complete interiors, the Fernie Courthouse is perhaps the most impressive. Visitors are welcome in the grand entrance way, where ornate curved golden oak balustrades frame the staircase. Original stained-glass windows can be seen from many vantage points. The current Courthouse building is the fourth Fernie Courthouse to have existed, constructed between 1909 and 1911 in grand Chateau style. Within the building, ornate carvings, a formal courtroom with six art-glass windows featuring Coatsof-Arms historically significant to British Columbia, and west coast cedar trim are preserved to this day. Across 5th Street from the Courthouse is the Holy Family Catholic Church. Constructed in 1912, it is considered to be the finest religious building in Fernie. Recent CBT heritage funding has allowed for restoration of the 12 art-glass stained windows depicting biblical scenes, a further 16 diamond pattern stained glass windows and a large round window above the entrance featuring the coat of arms of the Oblates of Mary Immaculate. Inside, many more examples of Romanesque revival design and religious iconography can be found, including an altar of imitation marble with gold filigree and a sanctuary fresco.
FERNIE MUSEUM
In part due to large investments and money related to the coal mining industry, Fernie played a significant role in Canada’s banking history. The 1923 failure of the Home Bank of Canada cost Fernie depositors $800,000 and led to the re-writing of Canada’s banking laws that prevented widespread bank failures in the 1930’s. The Fernie Branch of the Home Bank is a Beaux Arts structure that occupied the corner of 2nd Avenue and 5th Street; following the collapse the property housed a number of other businesses. The City of Fernie purchased the dilapidated property in 2009 and it now houses the Fernie Museum following an extensive interior refurbishment. Inside, several original features can be seen including original office structures, a small section of the original tile floor, plasterwork detailing, and the original doors to the safes. A further safe door can be found inside the Renaissance Revival style brick and sandstone structure on the corner of 2nd Avenue and 4th Street. This property was the home of the Imperial Bank of Canada from 1910 until 1963; the Brickhouse took over the main floor following the purchase of the building by Chernoff Architecture Inc in 2005.
FERNIE ARTS STATION PHOTOS COURTESY OF THE FERNIE MUSEUM
At the Fernie Arts Station, the rumble of passing trains evokes the building’s history as a busy train station from 1909 until 1964. Step inside the classical Van Dyke structure and explore the renovated property. The former baggage hall is now the theatre space, the waiting room serves as the cheerful foyer gallery, the ticket office is now home to the Blue Toque restaurant. Attic spaces (former employee quarters) and basement have been repurposed as working studios. Following the donation of the property from C.P.R. to the City of Fernie, the Fernie and District Arts Council began the 4-year process of moving the entire building to its current spot and renovating the almost-derelict property. Many original features had to be replaced, however, artistic eyes kept the renovation faithful to the integrity of the building and it has been a much-appreciated hub for arts and culture since 1990. Rebecca Hall is the Administrative and Marketing Coordinator for the Fernie Museum, a dedicated community volunteer, and a lover of winter in Fernie. JOSEPH GATT BRECAN INTERIORS FURNITURE STUDIO
My father, although never formally educated, was a very successful business man who I remember saying on more than one occasion that the only way a business can be successful is to first and foremost provide second to none customer service, give the public fairly priced goods and reliable products and always provide as many options as you can because we all have different tastes. I never had the aptitude for what my family business produced and sold, my heart belonged to the retail travel market. When I opened my first travel agency in those days all travel products were the same price no matter whom you bought it from, so the only way I could beat the competition was to be passionate and provide superior service. Once deregulation came in and airlines would charge whatever they wanted, I was able to think outside the box and created my own unique travel products and itineraries. That lasted for many years until the Internet took most of the retail travel market. Having said that, I believe that price wise, technology has made life much easier for both the travelling public and suppliers. Never in my life would I have dreamed of being involved in selling mattresses and furniture, but this wonderful community of Fernie which I have been a part of for four years was lacking this type of service, so when we decided to serve the Elk Valley with a furniture store, my father’s advice came to mind again. Our products are mostly made

in Canada, of very good or superior quality, with as many options as our floor space allows us. Our pricing is based on every day fair and competitive pricing, and as per my upbringing, the customer is paramount. I am a firm believer that the easiest thing is to sell something, the key is to deliver what you sold. I can see and feel that Fernie has a great future ahead of it. With Canada being one of the safest places on earth, we will benefit immensely from International and domestic outdoor tourism in years to come. We as a community need to stay vigilant in looking after our visitors because after all, reputation is everything.

If I was here, I would get a snowmobile to explore the back country. Q. My favourite way to unwind in town is… A. Taking my pups for a long walk to the Annex park. Fernie Essentials this Winter
BY EMMA POLIT
One of the things I love about Fernie is that you can wear anything you want with no judgment. Whether in jeans and a tee or a gorge party dress, your style is welcome and accepted in our little mountain town. In saying that, dressing for a Canadian winter brings its challenges. When opening the front door you could be met with two feet of snow, the perfect bluebird day (with the temp either at -1 or -25!) or a torrential downpour. It can be a daunting task - how do I dress for this kind of extreme weather - but it doesn’t have to be. With the right essentials you will be ready to take on any day that Fernie throws at you.
The Essentials! Layers. Layers are your friend. Get it right and you won’t let a chilly day stop your fun. If you’re off on a day of cold-weather adventure then thermal clothing is a must. Merino wool is a favourite for wicking moisture and keeping you warm. I love the oh-so soft and versatile ‘Icebreaker Oasis’ base layer from The Guides Hut. For day-to-day, my absolute go-to is by C’est Moi (which are made from bamboo so they’ll help regulate your body temp) from Freyja Lifestyle Fashion. Their leggings and long sleeve top may just be the most comfortable clothing you have ever put on. You need to keep those feet warm and there are plenty of options for
RACHEL AND SAGE FEATURING THE VERO MODA TEDDY COAT AT FREJYA EMMA POLIT PHOTO
you. For those big snowfall days you can’t go past a pair of ‘Joan of Artic’ Sorel boots. Available at Ski Base, your feet will stay warm, dry and comfortable all the way down to -32. Perfect! For everyday my feet don’t leave my Vans ‘SK8-Hi MTE’ from Edge of The World. Weather-resistant and lined with warm fleece and a heat retention layer, you can wear your sneakers all winter! Freyja has also brought in winter Native boots. Vegan, Canadian and super cute, I bet we’ll see many a pair walking the streets of Fernie this winter. If you’re hitting the hill then great quality snow pants are a must. I’m all about the bib pant (no snow down the back on those big powder days) and Volcom do an awesome one, which you can find at Edge of the World. Chunky knits for the win. Always. Edge of the World, Commit Snow and Skate and Frejya all have a great selection. You can also find sweet oversized hoodies that will have
you wanting to cozy up by the fire with a Hot Toddy. If you’re in need of a new jacket, you’re in luck. Frejya has so many coats that you won’t know how to pick just one. I fell in love with their Vero Moda Teddy Coat. Perfect over almost any outfit and yes, you will look like a plush, cuddly bear. Commit has me all excited for their Swedish label, WearColour’s winter range. The KJ Jacket has my name on it. If you see it on the ski hill it’s probs me. Make sure you say hi. We’re so lucky to have 2nd Ave jam packed with so many must-have items. Take an afternoon stroll and see what’s out there. No doubt you will find the perfect item to match you style. Weather affects your mood and we tend to dress for our mood. That’s the beauty of fashion; just wear what makes you feel good… and keeps you warm. WINTER 2018|19 › FOOD AND DRINK
FOOD AND DRINK We hear time and time again that visitors and tourists are happily surprised at the culinary options available to them in Fernie. To be honest, we’re surprised. This diversity has been building for some time, and for a small mountain community that depends on its coal mines just as much or even more than its tourism, it’s impressive to say the least. Whatever your taste buds desire, from gourmet pizza to authentic ethnic cuisine to traditional pub fare, you will find it here and on top of the amazing dining experience, you’ll enjoy great service in a fabulous atmosphere.
JILLIAN RUTHERFORD FERNIE DISTILLERS
Andrew and I find ourselves as new business owners of Fernie Distillers, and truthfully it is still surreal for us. We didn’t know 20 years ago that we would be part of the Fernie F&B scene, we didn’t even know each other 20 years ago but we both knew Fernie. A typical weekend would involve chili at the Bear’s Den, beverages at the Griz, takeout Chinese food and more beverages and shuffleboard at the Royal. Some things haven’t changed but much has. We had kids, spent more time shuttling them to and from ski school than actually skiing ourselves, stole snoozes in the Day Lodge instead of heading up to the Griz (we have all seen that parent) and stayed in a lot. As much as we have come out of our shell with our kids growing up, there is good reason to venture out. The quality and diversity of food and beverage options in Fernie has grown and has contributed to shoulder season vibrancy and economic stability. The ability to engage locals and visitors when they aren’t at work or on the slopes and deliver quality experiences makes Fernie so much more than a one-trick pony. We wanted to bring something different to Fernie, something that would complement the existing business community but had the potential to draw people off the highway and into town to see the unique offerings. Fernie has a lot of momentum right now and the

COCKTAILS AND CHARACTER STORY AND PHOTOS BY JESSE BELL FERNIE DISTILLERS
Fernie isn’t much for scale; those of us who live here know this. A quaint 12 avenues and 16 streets, a mountainside subdivision, a serene river, and a four-block main street—just how we like it. Because what we lack in scale, we more than make up for with character. Good, old-fashioned, mountain town character. The kind that shines through in the white lights hanging from snow-covered trees, in a glowing fire overlooking the bright sparkles of town at the top of a black-sky cross-country ski, in the warmth reflected off aged red brick while sipping on a caesar as snow falls outside. Lots of character—in parties and playtime, in cocktails and beer. It won’t take you long to find the kind that suits you. And though an outdoor adventure with a flask of fireball inside a warming hut might just be your jam, for those of you who stick close to
town, there are so many character cocktail adventures to find; here are just a few to keep in mind. Nevado’s in Fernie is one of my favourite go-to places for delicious food and even more delicious cocktails. Their classic margarita is the right salty and sweet, and their Ginger Beef Caesar pays homage to the old Chinese food restaurant that used to operate in the same building. A pepperoni stick, a pickle, and the right amount of spice to compliment a pescado taco. Be sure to check out the old photographs hanging in their hallway—Nevado’s was once Fernie’s movie theatre.
If what you seek is sushi and sake, look to Yamagoya on Highway 3, open since 2003. I go there far more often than I care to admit, but I promise there’s a million fabulous reasons for doing so. The Alpine Martini, Yama’s signature cocktail, is a blend of Gekkeikan sake and plum wine served on ice, a local favourite. Their selection of Japanese and draft beers make it difficult to choose, and paired with sashimi carpaccio (or anything on the menu, really) you might find yourself returning every week. Or twice a week, but who’s counting. COCKTAILS AND CHARACTER continued on next page

FERNIE BREWING COMPANY
A new flair to town is the Fernie Distillers, a small-batch distillery located in the Fernie Legion building. The owners have beautifully renovated the space, and with the perfect warmth and ambiance it’s easy to set up here for a cocktail. If it’s your first time, be sure to do a tasting and then try a Rusty Rail cocktail, a medley of their Fernie Fog liqueur and blended Scotch with hints of bergamot, honey and orange over a giant ice cube. The Distillery hopes to introduce a more extensive list of cocktails by February, and after a long day of powder turns I can think of few places I’d rather be for après.
through Sundays, Island Lake Lodge has reservations available for a two-course winter lunch. Reserve a cat ride up, or Nordic ski to the top. Be sure to indulge in the specialty Smoked Sage cocktail; Makers Mark Bourbon, citrus sage simple syrup, and organic pear juice. Or dive into a glass of the Three Bears red blend while warming up next to the wood fireplace. L’wren Farkas, restaurant manager and wine director, says this new custom vintage is perfect for those chilly winter months in the mountains, and pairs smoothly with the mouth-watering chocolate torte dessert.
If beer is more your style, find yourself lounging in Fernie Brewing Company’s tasting room at 26 Manitou Rd. After a long day of skiing, hopping, snowshoeing, lounging, hot-tubbing (let’s be honest, it doesn’t matter what you did) a cold brew is a great way to relax. Choose from their beers on tap (seasonal brews are always a favourite), or ask for a flight. With four beers to taste and only $5 a pop, all proceeds from a flight go to FBC’s Cheers for Charity Fundraising Program. They also have a fantastic merchandise selection. Finally, feel good about drinking beer (as if we ever felt bad).
Whether it’s beer, bourbon, whisky, or wine (or all of the above and more), remember that it’s not Fernie’s scale that counts. It’s between those 12 avenues and 16 streets, up a snowy road aligned with old growth cedar or off the side of Main Street and hidden from plain view, where you’ll find the cocktails to get you through the long winter ahead. When your belly is full and your head a little fuzzy, watching your breath float in the frozen air on your chilly walk home doesn’t seem so drear. Mountain town life in the winter, but especially in Fernie, has all the character you’ll need.
The list goes on; so many incredible places to choose from, and really, so much quality winter time to do it. Thursday
Jesse Bell is an avid writer and adventurer from Fernie. When she isn’t sipping cocktails, she’s usually getting lost in the woods on purpose.

WINTER 2018|19 › where to stay
WHERE TO STAY One of the first decisions when planning your vacation or visit to Fernie is where to stay. Does staying on the hill or in town better suit your needs? Is your group large enough that a house rental is the best option? Have you planned your trip around being near any specific areas or landmarks? These are all good things to keep in mind, but remember everything is close in Fernie. There is such a variety when it comes to accommodation here, including hotels, motels, chalets, condos, Bed and Breakfasts, and private homes. If you need help or insider’s knowledge, visit our Accommodation Guide and consider working with one of the companies specialising in this area.
KEVIN DUNN
BROOKS CREEK RANCH We built Brooks Creek Ranch out of a desire to create a unique and unparalleled guest experience in one of the best outdoor playgrounds in the world. Secluded on 160 acres of private land surrounded by forestry land, our mountain chalet is only 15 minutes from downtown Fernie, yet it boasts the peace and tranquility of being away from it all. Completely off the grid, we rely on renewable power sources; yet guests enjoy the comfort and convenience of a five-star hotel, including high speed Internet. Different from a hotel, guests have access to common living spaces, and the on site concierge staff provide assistance with booking activities, transportation, and dining options. Fernie is certainly a unique location to be working in the hospitality business. When developing our breakfast menu, we were amazed at the selection of locally produced meat, eggs, and produce that were available year round. We designed our guest spaces, menu options, and guest care and concierge service to meet the expectations of travellers who seek a high level of accommodation and services. From organic cotton bedding to spring water taps throughout the building, no detail was too small to be considered. Initially, our expectation was to appeal primarily to corporate groups looking for a space to combine productive meetings with exciting team building activities, and we have certainly appealed to that market. However, to our surprise, we’ve hosted a much wider spectrum of guests. We have been popular with multigenerational family groups
that appreciate the flexibility to accommodate those family members who seek adventure along with those who seek some quiet refuge. On the other side of the spectrum, couples looking to disconnect from the routine of daily life and reconnect with each other love the experience of being here. Looking forward, we are working on plans for our next building that adds more guest suites, and meeting more international guests who’s extended travel plans demand more of the “home” feeling than traditional accommodations tend to offer. Q. When the Valley is coated with 30cm of fresh powder, I immediately... A. Take a moment to enjoy the peace of fresh snow. There’s something indescribable about how the soft new snow creates a quiet tranquility. But of course, the skis are always on standby for a few runs at the ski hill when that moment is over! Q. The best way to explore Fernie in Winter is… A. On snow shoes. Even if you’ve experienced a trail on a bike over the summer, once it’s buried in deep snow, it’s like finding a new trail. The views and the
LEANNE NANNINGA BORN TO ADVENTURE PHOTO
experience are completely different on the trails when the trees are covered in layers of snow and ice. Q. My favourite way to unwind in town is… A. Sampling a Fernie Brewing Company seasonal special is always high on the list, and if paired with dinner at one of our amazing restaurants, it’s even better. Whether it’s ribs, burgers, curry, or a sushi roll, the comfort food and beer in Fernie is good for the soul. Q. Don’t leave Fernie without… A. Finding a piece of art at one of the local galleries. There’s nothing better to remind you of Fernie and what you’re coming back to than one of the beautiful photos, paintings or sculptures by our talented local artists.

WINTER 2018|19 › REAL ESTATE AND DEVELOPMENT
REAL ESTATE AND DEVELOPMENT There is a continual ebb and flow when it comes to the housing and development markets in Fernie. Renovations within town have added charm and energy to an already buzzing community. Second home owners have made the permanent move to Fernie, adding engaged and passionate residents to our neighbourhoods. While there are developments on the edges of town, there is also a continual move towards Smart Growth - adding properties to already developed areas. A larger population base located within walking distance to downtown and Fernie’s many additional amenities helps to create the tight-knit feel we are known for. Opportunities and developments are always on the horizon, which will continue to build upon this model in Fernie and only enhance the quality of life already found here. There are many choices when it comes to building, purchasing or selling property in Fernie, and professionals with the experience and expertise to help you make the choice of a lifetime.
JACQUIE ARLING URBAN PLANNER
My love of Urban Planning and Land Development started with a Grade 10 Socials Project to redesign and revitalise Kelowna’s main street. It was the first ‘A’ I got from Mr. Conners and I thought to myself ‘I want to do more of this.’ That led me down the path to a Masters Degree in Urban Planning, and a variety of positions working for, and with, the Land Development Industry. The first time I came to Fernie (20 years ago), it impressed me with its natural landscape, heritage preservation, pathway linkages, and its strong social fabric. I instantly wanted to learn more about its history and people. Moving to Fernie in 2012 to raise our family was a no-brainer. Now, as a local Planning Consultant, and a volunteer for the Design Review Committee, I have seen some great projects of preservation, reuse, and reinvention. As a professional and home owner, I see Fernie’s future depends on our ability to diversify our economy and create more affordable housing options for all our residents. Q. When the Valley is coated with 30cm of fresh powder, I immediately... A. Look at my calendar and see what meetings I can cancel.

WINTER 2018|19 › services
SERVICES Without the many volunteers, non-profit organisations, and businesses dedicated to maintaining and improving the services and opportunities available in the area, Fernie would not be what it is today. Countless events, amenities, and services are strictly on offer because of the hard work and generosity of these groups or individuals. From the Fernie Museum to the Fernie Arts Station, from the Chamber of Commerce to the Fernie Snowmobile Association, from the Fernie Trails Alliance to the City’s Leisure Services, we are very thankful and fortunate. It truly goes to show that not only do people love Fernie, but that they love it enough to get involved and give back.
LINDSAY MACKAY MEMBERSHIP COORDINATOR
I’m always looking for a new challenge and it was time for a career change. After a small wrong turn, my friend Shannon Takacs told me that the Chamber was looking for a new Membership Coordinator. It’s been a dream of mine to open my own business and I thought that this job would be a great knowledge stepping stone for me, maybe even be a part of strengthening commerce in my home. Little did I know that I would get along so well with the Executive Director Patty Vadnais, that we would make such a great team or that I would love working with our business community so much. Connecting with our members on a personal and professional level makes you appreciate all the hard work and dedication it takes. Without these wonderful people doing what they love, Fernie would never be the community it is today. Over the past year and a half, I’ve seen new businesses come out of the wood work and fill niches that the community needs. From marketing firms to custom copper works it just keeps getting better! I hope the future keeps bringing new and unique opportunities into our town, so we can grow in a sustainable way. That we keep the backbone of Fernie, our locally run businesses, strong and vibrant.

Q. When the Valley is coated with 30cm of fresh powder, I immediately... A. Smile, take a deep breath and call Patty to flip a coin on who gets to come in at noon! Q. The best way to explore Fernie in Winter is… A. By foot. I love walking the streets and river dyke. It’s just so quiet and the river is always changing as it freezes.
Q. My favourite way to unwind in town is… A. Having a drink with a girlfriend at one of the local bars and just having a little chat before heading home to my husband. Q. Don’t leave Fernie without… A. Visiting Island Lake Lodge. All year round, this place is a slice of paradise. Especially in the winter with a cat ride up, a snowshoe around the lake and finished off with lunch and an Old Fashion.

AVALANCHES
The Lizard Range surrounding Fernie Alpine Resort offers exciting and challenging terrain to the experienced traveller. There is a real danger of avalanches outside the ski boundaries. Skiers must be prepared to travel on their terms, there is no avalanche control or ski patrol rescue. The slopes are steep and the snow deep, travelling outside the boundary is recommended only for those people experienced and equipped to deal with serious avalanche dangers.
OUT OF BOUNDS SKIING
Fernie Alpine Resort is a mountain with some very steep terrain. Snow storms deposit huge amounts of fresh snow on the Lizard Range and Lizard Ridge. Avalanche conditions within the ski area can become extreme. During hazardous periods, areas within the ski area are closed until avalanche control work is complete and the skiing is safe. Be aware of closures and stay out of closed areas so that avalanche control teams can do their work. Lift pass suspensions may result.
