Welcome, and thank you for choosing our sweet little mountain town as your winter escape. Fernie wouldn’t be the same without the seasonal visitors it attracts each year, something that has been accentuated this year as we all work our way through a global pandemic. While industry such as coal mining and logging have always been an integral part of our rich history and continue to be a significant economic force in the valley, tourism has also had an active role and is increasingly recognized and embraced by our community. So, just how did Fernie come to be? After ten years of raising money and building mines and the railway, William Fernie and
Colonel James Baker brought coal mining to the valley in 1897. Logging was quickly the second largest industry in the area, with logging camps employing hundreds. Over the following sixty years, Fernie was plagued with bad luck (mining accidents, devastating fires, the depression of the thirties), but in the 1960s it started to turn around with world coal markets revitalizing the economy and Fernie Snow Valley opening its doors and attracting avid winter enthusiasts from
around the world. From there, we saw the beginnings of key winter operators such as Island Lake Lodge and Fernie Wilderness Adventures diversify the market. The Fernie Ski Touring Club built trails and huts for ski touring access and adventures, and more recently, organizations such as the Fernie Nordic Society and the Fernie Trails Alliance have brought additional opportunities WELCOME continued on next page

Founded in 1897 and incorporated as the City of Fernie in 1904. Location: Southeast corner of British Columbia, Canada, the only city-class municipality in Canada that is fully encircled by the Rocky Mountains. Just 45 minutes from both the Alberta and US borders. Population: 5,249 permanent residents with an additional 2,000 outside city limits and a substantial seasonal population in both winter and summer.

Snowfall: Situated in the Elk Valley, Fernie has its own microclimate with approximately 360 cm of snow in town and 875 cm on the hill. Temperature: Average temperature is –11 C in the winter. The Griz: Fernie’s powder legend that points his musket to the clouds to promote snowfall from the skies. The Ghostrider: Located on Mt. Hosmer, a distinctive image of a horse and rider, best seen as the sun sets, but more noticeable in summer. Fernie Alpine Resort: Previously known as Fernie Snow Valley, is going into its 59th season! Catskiing: Fernie is home to Island Lake Catskiing and Fernie Wilderness Adventures, both known for their terrain and snowpack. Festivals: Fernie’s biggest winter festival is Griz Days, in honour of the Griz and the amazing champagne powder Fernie is known for typically held over the first weekend in March. Additionally, there is the Ski and Board Festival, Reel Canadian Film Festival, Fernie Mountain Film Festival, and Stoke Fest hosted by Shred Kelly held throughout the winter that round out the cultural feel of Fernie winters. I am the Director of Resort Administration and Summer Operations for Fernie Alpine Resort, sit on the board of Tourism Fernie and have proudly called Fernie home since 2005 where I live with my wife, Andrea, 2 girls, Adley 6, and Emmy 4, and 2 dogs, Maddy, a chihuahua of unknown age, and Barney, a 1 year old Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever. When I’m not at work, you can find me with my family, shovelling the driveway, or sneaking out to ski. I first came to Fernie in November 2000, and worked as a rental technician at Fernie Alpine Resort. I have been a permanent resident of Fernie since 2005 and became a Canadian citizen in 2010. After graduating university, the idea of 9-5 in a cubicle did not seem fulfilling. So I made my escape to the mountains and once I arrived, the town, the community, and the beauty of the valley took over. I never really set out to be a career ski bum. In my younger days I was mostly following the path of least resistance, relying on instinct to create my journey. So when I arrived somewhere that just felt right, I knew it was worth putting in the effort to make this place home. There has been a huge change in how we communicate, research, make decisions and purchase recreation opportunities. The internet and social media has driven these changes. Our market is increasingly well-educated and informed. The access to real-time information has changed the way people decide how to spend their recreation dollars. And while it’s continually evolving, I continue to enjoy everything about working

in recreation. Daily I have the opportunity to be part of an industry that brings so much enjoyment to so many people. The energy, the stoke levels after a good day, the challenges after a bad one, the excitement as our winter residents arrive in town each year. I could go on! I am excited to be part of the future of recreation in this valley. I am a big proponent of collaboration and open communication. My hope is to help create a long-term, sustainable tourism and recreation experience for generations to come. Q. In my option, the best part about Fernie winters is… A. Skiing, of course!

We are especially lucky to be able to enjoy our open spaces during these pandemic times and remain active year-round. Whether you’re looking for a low-key stroll or a heart pumping ride, we’ve got an outdoor space for everyone! Miner’s Walk
Learn about the geology and history of Elk Valley coal mining through interactive posts, educational panels and unique interpretive art, all part of the Fernie Miner’s Walk Exhibit located outside of City Hall. This location was the original headquarters of the old Crows Nest Pass Coal Company, and the exhibit is complete with picnic benches, seating and beautiful views. Railyard Dog Park
Take your furry friends for a walk in this volunteer-run, fenced, year-round off-leash dog park, located at 99 Ridgemont Avenue nestled in the trees just off downtown. We all love to enjoy the beautiful outdoors in winter, pets included!
Fernie Town Loop
ice rink was opened in 2017 thanks to generous donations from the Calgary Flames Foundation, the NHL, Canadian Arena Products, the Fernie Lions Club, and numerous community donors. As it is a natural ice surface, conditions fluctuate due to weather. The City of Fernie staff and volunteers monitor the rink daily and work hard to manage conditions and to keep the rink open for the community. Closures are posted on site, and there is no cost for dropin public skating.

Part of Fernie’s extensive trail system in and around town, the Town Loop is a 14 kilometre loop that offers access to all other community trails. Connecting the Airport and the James White Park to the Annex and the Annex Park, and also tying into the Fernie RV Park trail network and the Golf Course Nordic trails, the Town Loop gently follows the Elk River through town and showcases some of the City’s most beautiful views. A must to walk, snowshoe, fat bike, or Nordic ski. Located adjacent to the Fernie Aquatic Centre, the Outdoor Community Rink is expected to be open again this winter for public skating. Ten months had passed since my snowmobile last saw daylight. But there I was, two hours back in the saddle weaving through a delicious technical treeline. Gluttonously feasting on a classic Fernie powder buffet. Stoked to be back at the table.
Then it happened; I zigged when I should have zagged, and lost momentum through the fir goalposts. Forgetting experience, panic set in. “Put the flipper to the gripper” (aka squeeze the throttle) I could hear my husband shout in my head. “It may not end well but at least the suspense will be over.” And so I found myself two months after having a baby, track chewing down like a hot knife through butter. Out of shape, out of practice, and out of luck. I was stuck… bad.
When you think snowmobiling, you probably envision muscled dudes in polyester one-piece suits high-marking alpine bowls on turbocharged rockets with names like ‘Thunder Cat.’ You certainly aren’t thinking about petite blonds or brunette moms. Sledding has undergone a tremendous evolution. According to a 2018 study, BC snowmobiling now contributes $299.2 million in annual economic output and provides important, diverse revenue chains for rural
communities like Fernie. Largely in part to the diligent work of the sixty-three snowmobile clubs across the province that provide supporting infrastructure and services. The Fernie Snowmobile Association organizes complex land use agreements, provides three day-use cabins, events, and 161km of regularly groomed trails that serve as gateways to endless riding opportunities. professionalism required to operate these not for profit societies challenges the concept of heedless riders on obnoxious machines. After no shortage of profanity, laughter, and encouragement, my gang helped boot-pack snow to support the track, cleared the belly pan, and leveraged our combined 400 lbs to ski pull and roll the sled free in a testament to brains over brawn. Within my small tribe are powertrain engineers, world-renown coaches, safety technicians, outdoor educators, and business owners. They all have two things
in common: they are women and they work behind the scenes driving this progression in the industry. We are not unique. Thirty percent of today’s riders are women, fuelled by advancements in technology and emerging ladies’ clinics. We are lured by the ability to define one’s own compass bearing and convene with Mother Nature on our own terms. In this sport, we show up for one another, challenging the social construct of women to compete, compare, or criticize. The face of snowmobiling is changing. This once male-dominated industry is welcoming our unique perspectives, skills, and dollars
to one of BC’s most important tourism and recreation sectors with open arms. Many local women are blazing their way in the backcountry, creating the fire, and sharing the stoke. After reading this, I hope there will be more. Sledding never looked so good and I can’t wait to see where we’ll go from here! As I write this article there is snow softly falling on our mountain bike trails. The beloved Swine Flu, the epic Hypervent/Hyperextension loop and my favourite Red Sonja will soon be gone - erased by up to 10 metres of whiteness! Should this ‘legendary powder’ spell the end of your riding season? Well, it shouldn’t. We’ve been fat biking in Fernie for many years. Our Fernie fat biking community has gotten bigger and more organized with each year. We went from floundering on precarious single track to riding side by side on groomed trails. Our volunteers are the heart of this community and continue to go out and groom trails for all users in the middle of the night! Fat biking is a great outside workout which keeps that spin alive all year long. Slow, methodical and peaceful are just a few of the words that come to mind when riding through the quiet forest. Sure, I wouldn’t miss skiing Skydive or Snake Ridge on days when the avalanche guns ‘boom.’ But on those other days when the snow is a little ‘meh’ or I am pressed for time I am spinning those ridiculously large tires up a trail. Ride on.

Fat Biking Essentials 1. Obviously, a fat bike. Rent or borrow one first. Rentals are available in multiple places in the valley. Straight Line, Gear Hub, Guides Hut, Ski / Bike Base and Quest Fall Line Sports up at Fernie Alpine Resort can hook you up. 2. Helmet and eyewear. Wear a bike helmet with a lightweight toque or beanie. A buff is a good option in case it gets cold. For me, sunglasses work well but some friends wear goggles for the descent. 3. Layers, layers, layers! Merino wool is the best as it wicks the moisture away from your skin and can be worn several times before it needs to be washed. Try a merino layer with a bike jersey (for the pockets) over top and then a shell that can cut the wind for the ride down. The ride down is the coldest part of the ride, as you are now a little sweaty so this is where an outer layer truly comes in handy. ‘Less is more’ means dress for ten degrees warmer than it truly is. Overdressing is bad. 4. Footwear and pedals. I have been using 45North boots for a couple of seasons. They are the bomb and my feet haven’t
been cold since. Prior to this I wore merino socks, Shimano shoes and a Pearl Izumi overshoe on top. An alternative option is to use flat pedals and a wear a pair of winter boots. One big thing that has come around recently is heated socks and by golly… they are amazing. 5. Hands. Bar Mitts are so toasty that I have taken off my summer bike gloves while riding in the winter. I personally think they are a must for winter riding. Those who dislike the Bar Mitts because of reduced mobility go for lobster mitts and seem to have great success in keeping their hands warm.
Where to Ride 1. Critical mass dictates where the riding will be good. More riders and people with snowshoes mean that the trails get packed down, resulting in better riding! 2. Check your local bike shop for information on the best fat biking trails this winter. 3. Trailforks is a great resource to use in the summer and winter. Riders post conditions after the ride and can leave comments if the trail is good to go.
4. Facebook has a public group called Fernie Fat Bike where people ask questions, give trail conditions and post about equipment etc. The group is quite responsive to queries as they are all involved with the sport. 5. Strava is another tool that can be used effectively for winter biking. Members of the Fernie Mountain Bike Club have their own feed that you can follow and see rides, duration and photos. 6. In past, loops have been groomed at Fernie Alpine Resort, Montane, Ridgemont, Phat Bastard/Red Sonja, the City Loop… and as this guide goes to press, additional loops and trail maps are in the works! Stay up to date at ferniefix. com and tourismfernie.com. Above all else, get out and have fun. Remember, trails are multi-use and include snowshoers and trail runners. Winter at Fernie Alpine Resort More Than Just Skiing by Karen Pepper

Connecting and enjoying time with friends in the outdoors has never been more important to our well-being as it has since the arrival of the global pandemic in 2020. The spring, summer and fall months were filled with camping, hiking, biking, fishing, rafting and river floats, and this has helped to keep our socializing safe and fun. Our small town and resort in the Canadian Rockies are fortunate to have the space and outdoor infrastructure to support all of these activities. Moving into the colder months, the need to socialize outdoors will likely remain a priority. So bundle up, put on a buff (face mask!) and let’s recreate in the snow. First, the obvious - winter and skiing/ snowboarding go hand in hand in Fernie. Whether resort lift-accessed or cat skiing and backcountry is your thing, you will find them available and abundant here. But there
are more ways to play in the snow – Nordic skiing (classic and skate), snowshoeing, winter trail running and winter fat biking, to name a few. Fernie Alpine Resort’s multi-use trail network is a great place to explore these other winter activities. A number of these trails are wide, groomed trails perfect for these recreational pursuits.
Trail Running (or snowshoeing) Double Creek Loop (approx. 3km) Difficulty Rating – moderate (blue)
A beautiful ‘singletrack’ treed loop with a great variety of terrain. Access the Double
Creek Loop trailhead via Parking Lot #4. After a good uphill, the trail rolls through a forest of Larch and Cedar trees. Look for large burntout logs, remnants of the early 1900 fires in the Elk Valley.
Snowshoeing (or trail running) Hobbits Trail / FAR Out / Honeybee / Phat Larry’s

This beautiful route begins from the base area and gently winds uphill to the bottom of the Boomerang Chair on the wide, groomed Hobbits Trail. For an easy route, turn around and return to the resort base area on the same trail. You can also connect to several fun technical singletrack in this mini trail network – including FAR Out, Phat Larry’s, Honey Bee and Eville. These trails follow the contours of the mountain on moderate, smooth terrain through a forest of Balsam, Hemlocks, and Englemann Spruce.

Nordic Skiing (classic/skate) and Winter Fat Biking Silk / Manchuria / Scandia Trails (approx. 5.5 to 10.5km) Difficulty rating – moderate (blue)
These multi-use trails are great for all activities mentioned in this article, and are dog friendly (please keep your furry friend on a leash). These wide trails are regularly groomed and track-set. Access the trailhead from Parking Lot #4. Starting with a fairly substantial uphill grunt, connect to the Silk/Manchuria/Scandia trails, which are full of rolling hills and surrounded by beautiful forest. With the figure eight route design, you can choose to do the small loop (approx. 5.5km) or the large loop (approx. 10.5km). Another great option for Nordic skiers is to connect from Fernie Alpine Resort’s trails to the Fernie Nordic Society (FNS) trail network. Accessible via the Hobbits Trail, Nordic skiers can enjoy a variety of wide groomed trails on the FNS trails and then loop back to the resort. More and more people visiting Fernie during the winter are drawn to spending time in the amazing backcountry, whether on skis/snowboards, snowshoes or a snowmobile. The current global health challenge is likely to increase further the numbers of people looking for socially-distanced recreation in the wilderness. While the experience can be one of the highlights of your time in Fernie, once outside controlled areas (essentially Fernie Alpine Resort), you are exposed to substantial avalanche risk. Fernie’s legendary deep powder and steep mountains can be fatal if not approached with respect. Fernie Search and Rescue (SARS) is operationally ready to respond 24/7 to winter emergencies, however it is better for everyone to minimize the need for our services. Make sure you are safe: Check the weather report
Maybe it’s going to warm up and howl with rain, not a good time to be in the backcountry. Check the AvCan website (www.avalanche.ca)
Make sure you know the avalanche risk in your area. Read it all season, so you can track the trends, not just when heading out. Choose your partners well
Don’t go alone and don’t go with that guy bragging at the bar about secret stashes. Make sure the people you head out with have similar objectives, risk appetite and fitness. Decide who’s in charge and what “go/no-go” criteria you have for the day. Take the gear, know the gear
You’ll each be taking a transceiver, shovel and probe. Attend a course and make sure you know how to use them; your life may literally depend upon it. Also, take enough gear to be comfortable if things go wrong and you’re stuck there for a while. There are lots of suggested gear lists available online. Calling for help
No-one expects to, but it happens, otherwise SAR wouldn’t exist. How will anyone know you need help? Will there be cell signal where you are? Are you taking a personal satellite
communicator? Whatever you do, don’t forget a Trip Plan. Not sure what that is? Check our website, there’s an online one you can fill in under “Outdoor Safety.”
If you need help: It doesn’t matter who you are or how well you planned your trip, sometimes things go so wrong that you need outside help. It could be gear issues, you could be lost, someone may be injured or someone may be buried. Companion Rescue
If some of your party are involved in an avalanche you must immediately begin a companion rescue, do not wait for SAR to arrive. If possible, get a member of the group calling for help at the same time. Calling for help
Dial 911 and ask for the RCMP and state that it is a backcountry emergency and you will need SAR. No cell signal, then poke your satellite communicator. Don’t have one of those? Then you will need to decide whether to wait on the Trip Plan to kick in, or send someone to raise the alarm. Never delay a call – it is better to stand down rescue teams than to delay the call until dark. First aid
Provide what you can with what you have. Keep injured people as warm as possible.
Be visible
It’s hard to spot people in bad weather in the snow, and even harder in trees. Consider means of improving your visibility; fires, waving jackets, reflecting mirrors if it’s sunny, stomp out an SOS in the snow, some people carry mini-flares. Secure the site
Most times we will be coming in via helicopter. People scattered all over the site, loose clothing or equipment blowing around will all make things a lot harder. Never approach the machine, it will often remain under power. We will come to you. Be patient
Emergency services never move as fast as those needing help would like; a wilderness setting adds significant challenges. A realistic timeframe from 911 to SAR onscene is 1-2 hours, longer if the avalanche conditions are high or it is night. We have to gather information from 911 agencies, make avalanche safety assessments, requisition specialized resources. You may see us fly over, come in close and then fly away, often so that we can assess and refine our rescue plan, sometimes so we can reconfigure for longline rescue. Revitalizing Yoga Sequence by Michelle Thorne
Chances are, that if you live in Fernie, or are visiting this beautiful town, you have some degree of recreational enthusiasm. We are so lucky to be surrounded by mountains that offer endless opportunities to get outside and enjoy activities nearly year round.

As I am writing this, the weather is changing and snow is starting to fall. The excitement for winter is hovering in everyone’s minds. Now is the perfect time to establish and build upon a new routine of movement to complement those winter activities we are about to shift into. Keep your body and mind fresh and your soul happy! Slowing down and taking the time to relax and breathe deeply has been proven and is recommended as an exercise to help with mental clarity, stress reduction, and anxieties. Having a regular movement practice can unlock stiff joints and muscles, prepare you better for further strenuous activity and help with injury prevention and recovery. Here are some of my go-to moves to reenergize the body, get the creaks and cracks out of the joints and warm up for the day ahead. To get the maximum benefit, give yourself a few minutes before you begin to move, to sit up on a cushion, close your eyes and focus on the long slow inhale, and the long slow exhale of your breath. Try and match the length of both the in and out breaths. If your mind starts to wander, bring your focus back to your breath. Equipment needed: Blanket, Cushion, Yoga Blocks (if you don’t have blocks, a stack of books or a couple soup cans will do the trick!) Half Sun Salutation
Begin standing with your feet hip width apart. Pulling your core tight will tuck your pelvis and broaden your chest. Roll your shoulders back. On the inhale, raise your arms up overhead and on the exhale reach them over to the right. The in breath brings you back
HALF SUN SALUTATION through centre, and with the out reaching to the left. Complete two times and inhale your way back through centre line. With the next exhale, hinge from your hips and let your upper body fold forward, releasing the hands towards your mat or shins. Keep a nice deep bend in your knees, and work to pull your belly to your upper thighs. On your next inhalation, with a flattened back, lift your upper body half way up and release again into a forward fold. Flow through this three to five times. Twisted Forward Fold
From the forward fold plant your right hand onto the mat in between and a bit in front of your feet. Use blocks to bring the floor closer if you can’t reach. Bending deeply through the right knee. Rotate your torso open to the left and place your left hand on your hip. Take five deep breaths here. Repeat on the opposite side, planting the left hand, bending the left knee and opening the torso to the right. Again take five breaths in this position.
Come down to the mat onto your hands and knees into tabletop position. Take the time to place the hands under your shoulders and the knees under your hips. On an in breath, starting with your tailbone, begin to curl it upwards as you let your belly drop toward the mat. Roll your shoulders back and behind and let the front of your chest open up. Lift your chin. As you exhale, starting again with the tailbone, tuck it under, arch your spine, push the mat away from you with your hands and knees, Tuck the chin to your chest. Repeat this sequence five times. Low Lunge
Arrive back in tabletop position. Step your right foot in between your hands and rise up onto your left knee. Tuck a blanket under the knee if it’s sensitive. Let your hips sink forwards and down on an exhale. Check your right knee is over top of your right ankle. Bring your arms to reach over head or to rest on the hips. Take five breaths here. Release, and repeat on the left again for five breaths. Reset back in tabletop. Downward Facing Dog
Tuck your toes under and lift your hips up and back keeping your hands planted firmly on the mat. Keep a bend to the knees if there is too much sensation through the back of the legs. Pedal out the feet a few times each side before sinking the heels towards the mat. It’s ok if they don’t touch! Take 5 breaths in Downward facing dog. Dropping your knees down to the mat, let your legs come long and roll onto your back.

Gather your knees into your chest to give them a big squeeze. Let both of your knees drop over to the right side to rest on the mat. If they don’t reach the mat, tuck a blanket under your knees. Let your arms come out to a T shape beside you, keeping both shoulder blades on the mat. If it feels ok for your neck, let your head turn to the left. Five breaths here. Use your hands to help release you from this twist and give your knees a hug in once more. Repeat by taking the knees to the left and the gaze to the right for five breaths.

Place your left foot onto the mat, with its knee towards the ceiling. Crossing the right ankle overtop of the left knee, gather your left leg in towards your body giving it support behind the thigh with your hands. Take five breaths here. To release, unravel your legs, bring them mat width apart with your knees still bent, and windshield wiper them side to side. Repeat on the second side for five breaths. Supine twist
On your back, allow your body to fully relax, let your arms and your legs go wide. Slightly tuck your shoulder blades under your body, and let your head lie flat on the mat. Let your body absorb the movements just completed and return your breath to its normal, nonmanipulated state. Try to stay here for three to five minutes You don’t have to have experience with yoga to complete these moves. A common misconception about yoga is that you have to be flexible to do it. You don’t! Flexibility builds over time with a regular yoga or stretching practice. Just keep in mind that it doesn’t have to look perfect, it just needs to feel good within your own body and never move to the point of pain. Organizations such as the Fernie Arts Station and the Fernie Museum continue to set the bar, while independent art galleries and studios increase in number every year, lining the downtown shopping core with their colour and flare. You will also find the walls of many offices, shops, cafés and restaurants are enhanced with the talented work of local artists. It is great to see the arts and culture scene continue to grow and evolve, adding more colour and vibrancy to Fernie.

I arrived in Fernie April of 2000, looking for a ski town that had big snow without the Disneyland feeling of Whistler. Coming out of the video store on the Sunday of Labour Day weekend and looking up Second Avenue there wasn’t a single car and from there I was hooked. I would have taken a picture and sent it to friends in disbelief, but phones weren’t smart back then. The bug of the Arts and Culture industry bit me in middle school, doing the music for the school play. I went to university with the promise of ‘sensible’ degree in Environmental Management and had switched to Theatre Production by the end of the first semester. And life has been steeped in arts and culture in some form or another from then on. My first job in Fernie was to organize the Fernie Artwalk, which at the time took over businesses’ windows in town. I think we had 15 storefronts involved and it was a struggle to find enough artists to fill the windows. Arts and Culture in Fernie has come a long way since that summer of 2000. It is amazing to see the growing number of artisans filling downtown, I have always believed that there is art in everything and watching the artisan culture grow in Fernie and worldwide is very exciting. Being an artist has its ups and downs. The support of the people of Fernie and the visitors is amazing and very empowering. I am looking forward to the next chapter as an artist and business owner in Fernie, bringing Canadian artists and makers to

Q. Don’t leave town without… A. Checking out H Squared Gallery, of course. And hitting the Elk Valley Nordic Centre. The volunteers at the Nordic Centre do such an amazing job grooming and track setting and you can pop into the warming hut in between laps and warm up in front of the fire.

Fernie’s Built Heritage Then and Now by Rebecca Hall
The Heritage Walking Tour of Downtown Fernie begins at The Arts Station and follows a loop past some of Fernie’s most beautiful and significant architecture to finish at 901 Fernie, a faithful recreation of the former Fernie Secondary School which stood on the same spot. Pick up a copy of the walking tour at the Fernie Museum, Visitor Information Centre, or find it online at tourismfernie.com/history/historic-downtown. The tour continues past heritage bank buildings, the former Chinese Laundry, Isis Theatre, and Catholic Church. The tour also visits the Fernie Heritage Library – formerly, the Fernie Post Office and Customs Offices, and Fernie City Hall – the former Crow’s Nest Pass Coal Company Offices, one of Fernie’s oldest surviving commercial structures. It was here that Fernie’s citizens sheltered as flames razed the new city on August 1, 1908.
German brewmaster Albert Mutz G. H. Scott moved their two-year-old brewery from Fort Steele to Fernie in 1900 and built an impressive three-storey structure at a cost of $5,500. By 1906 the brewery had purchased the East Kootenay Bottling Company’s plant and added ‘aerated waters’ to their product line. Labels from the time show that they were brewing ales up to 16% ABV, the standard beer packed a powerful 8% punch.
The Great Fire
The 1908 fire was barely a blip in operations and a new four-storey brick building was formally opened on August 6, 1909. The company thrived for four decades until it was purchased by Interior Breweries in 1950 which closed plants in Fernie and Nelson in favour of a new operation in Creston in 1956. That was the end of commercial brewing in Fernie, until the Fernie Brewing Company was founded in 2003 by the Pask family. The new Brewery that we enjoy today was opened in 2007 and is part of Fernie’s new architectural heritage.
The Great Fernie of 1908 was the second of two major fires in Fernie at the start of the 20th Century. The first, in 1904, started in a bakery and destroyed much of the downtown commercial district. Undaunted, the community incorporated Fernie and quickly set about rebuilding their timber-framed structures. More impressive brick and stone buildings also began appearing. Then, as the heat of August arrived just four years later, so did the flames. This time, a wildfire swept through town and in just 90 minutes, $5M worth of property was destroyed. Freight, lumber, bridges, and businesses were also lost, doubling the total losses to Fernie. The historic buildings that we treasure today are largely thanks to the resulting ordinance from City Council, which decreed that all buildings within a ten-block section are constructed of fireproof material. Over the next four years, Fernie was rebuilt with many buildings completed by 1910. ‘Fireproof’ materials included rubblestone from the Elk River which can be seen on the Fernie Livery Building, imported red brick and slate as on the Fernie Courthouse, and Fernie’s own golden bricks from the Fernie Brick Plant in West Fernie, which survived the fire.

As restoration work begins on the 1912 Leroux Mansion and 1909 Royal Hotel, Fernie can be grateful that our built heritage – from then and now – will be preserved and cherished for years to come. We can only mourn the lost gems and hope we don’t lose any more.

Ghostrider Trading Company I was born and raised in San Salvador, El Salvador, and moved to a city Thousand Oaks (North of Los Angeles, CA) for a couple of years before coming to Canada. I arrived in Fernie in May 2016 and was hired as a Livein-Caregiver for a family in town. Prior to my arrival here, they sent me a bag of goodies which included a copy of the Fernie Fix. I saw from the magazine that Fernie was surrounded by mountains, trees, and wild life – in El Salvador we don’t have much of that. In El Salvador I did spend some time in the “countryside,” but for me that was mainly horseback riding, walks and runs around a tiny small town, or on a beach. My first summer here I wore a thin sweater all of the time, and people wondered if I would survive my first Fernie winter. I had never seen snow! My first snowfall ever was here in town and I was super stoked, crazy winter arrived and I remember waking up one morning in February with over 93cm of snow. After gaining my Canadian Residency I worked as a Nanny for another wonderful family in town. I wanted to expand my skills and gain experience in a different work environment, so I decided to apply for an opening as a Sales Associate at Ghostrider Trading Company. I have always been interested in fashion (I studied graphic design back home but moved to the States and wasn’t able to graduate), and also love working with people. Just after I applied at Ghostrider Trading Company, non-essential businesses in Fernie were closed due to the Covid pandemic. It was hard seeing businesses that I liked

closed, and to see the effect it was having on the town in different ways. However it was nice to feel the support throughout the community, with everyone checking on one another. Once the stores re-opened in June, I began working at Ghostrider Trading Company. It is wonderful to be part of the Fernie family. Q. In my option, the best part about Fernie winters is… A. I would say going to the ski hill and enjoying the powder... I just skied once, but I loved it and survived! Q. I prefer to explore our legendary powder on…. A. I would like to snowshoe more this winter,
learn to ski and try at least once to ice fish and skate on a frozen lake and go on some snowmobile rides. Q. My preferred way to spend an evening in Fernie is… A. Given that my family is back in El Salvador, I enjoy spending time with my Latin/Canadian friends and family here in town – cooking, dancing and laughing warms my heart and makes it feel like home, or also going to a local bar/restaurant for food and drinks is always nice. Q. Don’t leave town without… A. Visiting us at Ghostrider Trading Company for some great clothes, footwear, and Fernie T-shirts, hats and hoodies!

I have always had a passion for eating. You can say it is my parents’ fault! I grew up in a family where there was always something cooking and always a good excuse to celebrate. I believe there is no better gift than a good meal and it always tastes better when shared with friends or family. So working in the food and beverage industry was more than natural for me. I have spent the last eight years working in various restaurants cooking, serving, cleaning and managing. Mostly in Montreal, but also around different towns in Canada. I did a little bit of everything: fine dining, breakfast, bar and casual dining places. However, my favourite has always been the little place where people go daily or weekly. I love having “regulars” that I can get to know. Therefore Mugshots was the perfect fit for me. This institution has been around for 20 years, almost older than me and I have a funny feeling that it still has many years to go. I am still a newbie in town. I moved here last year just before the winter season. I came a few times for winter vacations and fell in love with the community, promising myself I would move here one day. At first, I didn’t know how long I was going to stay. But now that I am Mugshots’ new owner I feel like I just got into a long term relationship with Fernie… and I think we are a great match. We don’t know what the future will be and how our town is going to evolve. But I know what I fell in love

WHERE TO STAY When it comes down to accommodation, you have some choices. You could choose to ski in and ski out at Fernie Alpine Resort, or walk in and walk out of your accommodation in town. Both are fabulous options, and at either location there are numerous options including hotels, motels, condos, houses and Air BnB. It’s really just your preference and the type of trip you are planning. Luckily it’s a short five-minute drive from town to the hill and shuttles run regularly. Just remember, accommodations book quickly so reservations ahead of time are necessary to avoid disappointment!

is now not the only reason tourists visit Fernie, in fact, it is secondary.
I arrived here 35 years ago. As I was finishing high school I got a job with a property management company that managed most of the newly built homes at the ski hill. Checking hot tubs, general maintenance, running garbage and laundry around and doing whatever was necessary to make sure visitors to Fernie had an enjoyable stay.
With occupancy rates increasing, and complete sellouts becoming more and more common, Fernie is long overdue for new accommodation developments. High end hotels with all the services, convention centres, boutique hotels, more short term rental designated condo developments, and of course seasonal worker accommodations to service all of it. If Fernie wishes to continue to grow it’s tourism, these developments need to happen sooner than later.

After completing an education in Tourism Marketing I moved back to Fernie to start Fernie’s first direct booking platform which was ahead of its time. Then I took up a position with Wildsight for a career in large landscape protection around Fernie for 10 years. During this time I was able to purchase a condo at Riverside and soon turned the lock off into an “Airbnb” which was more successful (and a lot more work) than I ever imagined. Eventually neighbours started asking me if I could help them run airbnb’s and Ferniebnb was born and has quickly grown to now be supporting one of the largest selections of accommodations in Fernie! Since I first started looking after hot tubs nearly 20 years ago, depending on how you look at it, either hardly anything has changed, or a lot has changed. We have more or less the same accommodations we had nearly 20 years ago, however the way it is managed, and how it can be booked has come a long way. Probably the biggest change in this industry is that Fernie is becoming much more of a year round destination. No longer is there an 8 month “off season”. Tourists visit Fernie year round for all it has to offer. The Ski Hill

I first came to town on the Greyhound bus in the winter of 2001. Seeing the snow cones sitting on top of the fence posts as the bus drove the highway from Sparwood to Fernie made me realize I had found my Shangri-la. A stint of living the dream and supervising at ski school was ended abruptly with my first mortgage payment. My business partner, Thomas Wilson grew up in Yellowknife before moving south. He finished his Architectural Technologist diploma in Calgary in 2008 before starting his Carpentry Apprenticeship. After finishing his apprenticeship he decided to chase his dream of skiing full time and move to Fernie. Unfortunately, life had other ideas and Thomas had to get behind the computer screen and put his pouch back on. Thomas and I are yin and yang but do share a few similarities. Firstly, we both love Sheepdogs…Secondly, we truly love building “cool” stuff. One of the unique things about building in Fernie is you never build the same thing twice. Being warrantied builders means continued education. This process has highlighted just how well the contractors and sub-contractors in Fernie build in comparison to the rest of the province. Making the Move to Fernie by Todd Fyfe
Each season has its unique advantages in Real Estate. While listing a property for sale in the winter typically sees a less crowded market with little competition, we are seeing some new trends emerge as more purchasers have taken to online property searches due to the pandemic. Potential home buyers are now actively looking, no matter the season, so as we head into another exciting winter season, it’s as good a time as any to be listing or looking to buy. Maybe you have been dreaming about purchasing that quintessential Fernie property, and now, with the current mortgage rates remaining at historical lows, owning in this incredible mountain community may be closer than you think. HSBC Canada led the trend earlier this month when it announced a five-year fixed default-insured mortgage for 1.99%, the lowest rate ever for a five-year fixed at the time. Despite the restrictive conditions, these low rates will provide a significant boost to the BC housing market. The Kootenay Association of REALTORS® (KAR) also reported a 52.4% rise in sales this past fall compared to 2019. “Realtors® in the region have adapted well to changing market scenarios and have been quite successful in minimizing the impact of the pandemic. We are sitting on the cusp of a major transition in our daily lives but real estate buyer behaviour in the Kootenays appears to be unaffected,” says KAR President Tyler Hancock. For Single Family listings in Fernie, we saw active listings drop as low as 32 available units with an average selling price of $686,744 which is a 3% increase in price compared to last year. As of October 8, 2020 sales volume is up 9% but remains hampered by the low available inventory. Along with this, there were seven sales over one million this yearto-date which represents a whopping 250% increase in sales over one million dollars as compared to the same period in 2017. Our Luxury sales are certainly no comparison to towns like Canmore or Whistler, but trending is beginning to show a migration to Fernie with more disposable income for housing. Affordability in the Elk Valley is challenging for buyers and renters looking to live right inside

the City limits of Fernie due to the abundance of employment and lifestyle amenities. Fortunately the combined inventory from surrounding areas such as Sparwood, Hosmer, Elko and Jaffray balance the over-all cost of single family housing and provide options for most buyers in the valley. If you’re thinking about making the move, here are a few things to remember: • Have a clear idea of the must-haves for this property. How do you want to use it? What is the big motivating factor for this move? • Become familiar with the market. Your Realtor® can help you with this even if you’re thousands of kilometres away. I first moved to Fernie with my girlfriend Averil in the fall of 2013 and took a ski bum job as a housekeeper at one of the on-mountain lodging companies. We were only supposed to stay here for that one ski season, but after a bit of travelling around Canada in 2014 we decided to make Fernie our home. We love winter here a lot, but summer and fall really sealed the deal for us! As time went on I leaned into my management education and experience, and worked my way up through different roles in the local tourism and accommodation industry including front desk manager, housekeeping manager, and marketing – eventually becoming the General Manager of Fernie Lodging Company. After being in that role for a few years and serving on the board of Tourism Fernie, I accepted the role of Executive Director of the Fernie Chamber of Commerce in April 2019. Even in the relatively short seven years we have been in Fernie, the tourism and hospitality industry has exploded here – particularly in the non-winter months. Working in the service industry myself I have seen firsthand the excitement of visitors, how much they love it here, and the economic benefits tourism brings to our valley. I have also witnessed the pinch points – the lack of a stable year-round workforce, scarcity of attainable housing for frontline workers, and challenges placed on our local environment. In my role collaborating with other local community groups and industry, I enjoy the challenge of helping find that balance for Fernie’s future between the long-term sustainability of the place we all love, and future economic development for our region.

Options for sexual health clinic by sue clarkson
There is no doubt about it – things are weird in 2020! Navigating the world while trying to keep ourselves healthy feels like a full-time job. Masks are not only a way to keep safe, but also a fashion accessory. Hand sanitizing, physically distancing and frequently washing our hands are now a way of life and the best way to keep ourselves COVID free. Fernie will likely look a little different this winter but one thing that hasn’t changed is the need to access health care. Sexual health has been deemed an essential service because being able to access birth control and STI testing/treatment are critical to health and well-being. Options for Sexual Health remains open throughout the pandemic with specific guidelines in place to ensure the safety of clients, staff, and volunteers. Staff and volunteers are required to stay home when they are sick. All clients are screened for COVID-19 prior to entering the hospital.
Conversations about STIs and COVID can be part of your negotiation and boundary setting!
Our top public health officials have offered suggestions about how to reduce transmission of COVID while having sex – including having sex through a barrier (ie. Glory holes!) and wearing masks. We want to encourage folks to keep themselves safe, and recognize that during COVID it may not be the time in our lives to find new romantic or sexual partners. But if it is, the most important thing is to recognize consent is STILL at the forefront. It’s okay to create boundaries. Just like in pre-COVID times, knowing your own and your partner’s risk factors for transmission is really important.

Elk Valley Transit System The Elk Valley Transit System travels between Elkford, Fernie and Sparwood and picks up at three locations in Fernie: the Elk Valley Hospital, Fernie Community Centre and College of the Rockies between 8:30am and 5:30pm. Health Connections provides transportation for medical appointments Wednesdays and Fridays, leaving at 9am at the Fernie Hospital and arriving at the Tamarack Mall or Cranbrook Hospital at 10:15am. You must not use lifts or terrain if your ability is impaired through use of alcohol or drugs. You must have sufficient physical dexterity, ability and knowledge to safely load, ride and unload lifts. If in doubt, ask the lift attendant.
