Welcome to the Connection Project, a community art project by Feros Care
people enjoy social connections once again and bring joy back to their life
What started out as a feature and conversation starter for the launch of Feros Care’s major new charitable initiative to tackle loneliness in Australia, grew into a national community art project that none of us could have imagined.
The following paragraphs explain the history of the project and of Feros Care’s mission to tackle loneliness, which I hope you read.
Before we go on to tell its story, I want to personally acknowledge and thank with immense gratitude the 360+ incredible artists that offered to participate, to share their art and their heart, as well as very personal feelings about what being connected and most loved means to them. I can’t begin to describe the sense of joy, human spirit and honesty that poured into our offices every day for a whole month as photos, videos and artworks were sent in to us. The excitement and wonder that we experienced as we opened up the hundreds of brown boxes, or collected the pieces from artists in person, can only be described like having a birthday every day. Photographs of individual artists as they created their work and shots of schools and groups working together really showed the sense of community that this project created. Our artists have come from all corners of Australia and all walks of life, schoolchildren, celebrities, indigenous artists, community groups, public figures, musicians, cultural groups, people with disability, corporate executives and aged care residents. We could not have asked for a broader range of contributors and every one has touched our hearts. There are so many people to thank in bringing this project to life, but I do want to especially acknowledge those contributors for whom art is their livelihood and who have generously given their time and gift to us freely, as well as to all those who have donated their work to raise funds for our cause. Your support will allow us to help many lonely
The rest of this book is dedicated to showcasing the talent, generosity, creativity, beautiful storytelling and open hearts of each of our contributing artists. The art and stories displayed are heart-warming, as is the process for which they have come together. It demonstrates that humans really are social creatures, that belonging is as vital to our wellbeing and longevity as the air we breathe and that leading Australia in tackling loneliness is crucial work for Feros Care to undertake. We hope you choose to support us in our mission and that you enjoy the work as much as I have. With best wishes
Jennene Buckley Chief Executive Officer Feros Care
Tackling loneliness together Each year, Feros Care works with more than 60,000 people who need support to live independent, fulfilled lives. What we have learned is how susceptible many are to being lonely; what we see is how devastating this can be. International and domestic research backs this up. The startling evidence shows that left unresolved, feeling lonely has a bigger impact on health than smoking, physical inactivity and obesity. Yet, with strong social connections, we can reduce our chances of premature death by half. Loneliness can touch anyone. For a day, a month or a lifetime. Research shows up to 1 in 4 people feel lonely – all ages, all backgrounds. Loneliness is becoming an epidemic. In line with our mission to enable bold lives, Feros Care has established a major charitable initiative to tackle loneliness so people can live healthy, connected lives. It will focus on raising awareness of the issue so that we can tackle loneliness together and implement and scale a range of impactful programs that help people achieve meaningful connections.

THE C O N N EC TI O N P R O J ECT As a focal point for the launch of Feros Care’s charity to tackle loneliness and inspired by US artist Tim Kelly, the Connection Project was intended to stimulate conversations around loneliness and connection in a fun, collaborative arts project. 350+ individuals from community and public life were asked to represent what “belonging” means personally to them by responding to the question “I feel most loved when ….” and creating a piece of their own art on a giant jigsaw piece with its accompanying story. When returned, the pieces were assembled into a completed jigsaw, where they created a large meaningful piece of collaborative art with one common theme. “Although we are all individuals, we all have a place in the community and are better together”. Artists generously made their pieces available for sale, as a fundraiser for programs to create better social connections for people who are experiencing, or at risk of loneliness. By popular request, the installation has been on public display at Robina Town Centre from 30th November to 8th December 2019. Check besomeoneforsomeone.org/programs/ connection-project/ to see the next installment.
I feel most loved when... I am free to create!!! Aimee Moy I feel most loved when... I am free to create!!! I was over thinking this project, trying to make it too meaningful and deep and that takes the enjoyment out of art for me, so I simply sat down with my tools and started doodling‌just creating with purpose, but also peace‌
Aarna Hudson I feel most loved when I give back to myself in order to give and receive love from others. Connecting with nature and art is essential for me but a struggle to achieve sometimes as a parent. This work includes two drawings from one of my three sons. Their love means everything to me. I wanted to show both the struggle and beauty in our colourful life along with the ways I connect with nature and the arts to feed my soul in order to maintain connection. 6 | Be Someone for Someone. My inspiration for my puzzle piece is my family. I feel most loved when I spend time with my family and I feel very fortunate for the strong connection we have with each other.
I feel most loved when I’m spending time with my kids, Martina (2) and Jorge (5). We created this together and they were excited and proud. “Mummy look”! with a big smile. Nothing better than that.

Ann Heywood It is impossible to choose just one occasion when I have felt “most loved”. Like when I was wrapped up against the winter chill and taken by my grandfather to play in the park Or when I drove a (peddle) car on our first ever family holiday; Or when my mother hand sewed a dress for my 4th birthday out of an old parachute – 70 years later I still have that dress; Or at my wedding surrounded by the people I loved; Or at Christmas, coming together to share Gingerbread Houses and other traditions; Or at home with my dogs who give so much unconditional love; Or with my husband and friends on his 90th birthday; Just some of the occasions I have felt “most loved’

This artwork was inspired by Gloria, a client in Feros Care at home community. She says she doesn’t want gifts or anything, she just feels loved when people say hello and ask how you are. A listening ear and a heart that understands me is what makes me feel valued and loved. This piece is called ‘The listening ear’.
I feel most loved when spending time with my friends is when I feel loved. We call each other ‘gullfriends’ and always send each other photos of seagulls.
The subject of my art piece is “I feel loved when I belong”. This artwork is inspired by a New Zealand Maori myth about the beautiful Earth Mother Papatuanuku and her one true love the strong Sky Father Ranginui. Before our existence, Papatuanuku and Ranginui were locked together in a tight embrace; between them, there was darkness, until their children decided to push them apart to reveal the light of the sun. This saddened both Ranginui and Papatuanuku as they were deeply connected and to this day, the cries of yearning are evident through the wind, the rain and the sudden shakes in the earth. In the picture, you can see Papatuanuku reaching out to her true love Ranginui. In between, are their children... us. On the land is where we walk; we belong to the earth and sky. I feel loved because I know I belong to this world, along with all other beings; I know we are watched over, protected... and loved. besomeoneforsomeone.org | 17

Caroline Varendorff We’ve moved about quite a lot due to my husband’s work so it’s been hard to find friends and feel part of a community. To feel loved is to feel safe and secure, to know you are not alone, to have a ‘sanctuary’. Caroline Wisler Through the use of ‘Queen Anne’s Lace’ I have created a collage to convey a sense of ‘sanctuary’, this being the symbolic meaning of the flower. A sanctuary is a place where one can feel safe and protected. As I am surrounded and supported by my family and community, I experience a sense of belonging and connection, a place of safety. To feel loved is to feel safe and secure, to know you are not alone, to have a ‘sanctuary’.
Coralie Johnston I feel most loved since having my 4 month old kitten. He gives me a reason to get up in the morning, something to love and cuddle. When I come home there he is sitting by the door waiting for me. He takes the loneliness away and makes it ‘ok’. Like the beautiful butterflies with their wings to freedom, loneliness flies away and left is my precious gift, my true friend ‘Dusty’.

The echidna is a lonely little animal who keeps to himself...
Danny Eastwood The echidna is a lonely little animal who keeps to himself and is often called wrong names such as porcupine, spiny ant eater, and his home is now filled with feral animals foxes, cats, and his environment is changed as it travels around his habitat and it is a tender little animal with a soft under belly that you can pick it up, but if you let it go in your backyard it will have disappeared next morning. The lonely old man and his loneliness is like the echidna, he lives in a little fibro house and his
environment has changed, his children have moved interstate and don’t communicate. All the old residents in his street have died, or moved on, and his street is now full of double storey buildings and foreign people from overseas who keep to themselves and as neighbours he can not have any communication with them as they don’t mix in and talk over the fence or in the street as the old days because he shuffled down the street. The children avoid him as he lives in that old broken down house made of fibro.
Like the echidna now ones know his proper name, is it Bill, John, Mike; but people don’t know is house is full of colour, and history and the conversations he could have. He is even more lonely because he is illiterate and can not read or write as his wife used to do all his for him. So when he returns home from his walks, he just curls up like the echidna into a ball in his bed, watches tv as this is his only companion.

Chanting OM brings me there. As I meditate it allows me to let go of emotions such as loneliness and I feel love. OM is the sound of the universe. We are all one, in the universe. We are never alone. I feel most loved when I share a mutual appreciative connection of Phi inspired cathedrals aiding in awe inspired high spirits. The pervasive Golden Ratio is expressed through nature, music, art, unified physics, invoking humanities ability to embrace the implicit order of a connected universal resonance. They represent nature’s laws, because, in their attraction of uniting, they encourage morphic efficient geometric space-saving walls of shared surface tension, creating polyhedrons such as dodecahedrons, tetrahedrons‌ The dog invokes unconditional love, trust, acknowledgement, acceptance, alluding to living a more harmonious connected life. besomeoneforsomeone.org | 45

...positive energy is just the thing you need... Jo Chappell
I feel loved when I hug family, friends and pets (like Cott here). The positive energy is just the thing you need for a sense of optimism, connection and fills the heart with joy. As an artist and art therapist I am aware of not getting caught up in thoughts and know how important it is to interact with others. A hug will relax and de-stress you and eases tension, so you can look forward to life in an uplifting way. Hugging is a beautiful form of communication with no words needed, that makes you feel loved and wanted.
Jesusa Donohoe
Love will always prevail.
I feel most loved when I am respected, supported, understand and accepted for who I am. Music to me is one of the greatest connections in life. Not only human but also environment and the living things. Music can make people happy and take away the pain and stress of their life. It is like a sunrise that every morning we wake up to and know there’s always hope and bright days ahead of us. It shines in my mind and makes me stronger to connect with the world, especially my family and the people I care for every day. Losing people you love the most can be stressful. From here I’ve learned a lot from different backgrounds and cultural diversity. Every individual I’ve met has their own ideas and perspective in life. I listened to both positive and negatives, their ups and downs. It has been inspiring - that leads me to become who I am today. I am just happy to be able to share these positive creations, happiness and touch others’ lives.

The work allows the viewer to engage with the work through visual sensory and ones own imagination, witnessing the results of this exceedingly thick and intricately woven painting. This work plays heavily with patterns so that the painting transcends towards a sculptural and ornamental structure.

We focused on the notion that although we are all individuals, we all have a place in community and we’re better together. Two of us collaborated on this piece and painted natives from our gardens. By collaborating we hoped to represent our wonderful arts collective and the way in which we all contribute our talents and strengths to make it work and have found a real sense of community, a home away from home and a space where we inspire and support each other. It also represents the collaboration between our spaces and the wider community – the support it generates for both and the connection we all feel. 62 | Be Someone for Someone. On this puzzle piece, this sunflower represents the brightness I feel when I am feeling loved. The feeling of love is vibrant and exciting, it’s happy and builds your confidence. I feel most loved when I am surrounded by my family and friends, the people who mean the most, who are loyal and will always be a part of my life. These people stand by me on my journey through life, thick and thin, they’re always there to enjoy the successes or support me in challenging times.

everything must connect...
Tiffany Kingston All my art refers to the idea of everything must connect in order for its existence (All is one). All elements interlink above the surface and below. This artwork is devoted to the unseen. Every element as in ‘everyone’ has a part to play in this extraordinary tapestry of life. The question is why do some become separated from the whole? Why do some become invisible, disconnected, alone?

...surrounded by children Wilna Wilkinson
I feel most loved at the moment when any feeling of loneliness is banished when I am surrounded by children telling them stories and listening to theirs. On my frequent travels far and wide, I am often alone and far away from my grandchildren. That is when I go out and find the street children of the world, the misplaced, orphaned, lost and forgotten children who know loneliness better than anyone else. And who better with whom to share our love and our stories, to forget for a few moments the dark times and the sense of abandonment, and to feel the warmth of being loved. besomeoneforsomeone.org | 97
….I get coffee brought to me in bed in the morning…
Zoe Panagiotopoulos Just as the ancient pomegranate is the symbol of bounty and plenty, a sweet cousin to the rose – the symbol of love – so are the people most dear to me. Those here and those long gone. With their traits and attributes as beautiful and numerous as the jewel – like seeds of this wonderous fruit, they fill my life with joy and richness and meaning. They have wound themselves tenderly, exquisitely, inextricably around my heart - and I feel loved.
