mono-a. Ein Stück Blech, das ein Besteck sein wollte. Bei seinem Erscheinen im Jahr 1959 war mono-a das erste Besteck, das auf dekorative Gestaltungselemente radikal verzichtete. Der Name mono erklärt sich daher, dass das Messer ursprünglich aus einem einzigen Stück Edelstahl, einem sogenannten Monoblock, gestanzt wurde. Zugleich ist es ein Hinweis auf die Einheitlichkeit der Gestaltung. Der Entwurf von Prof. Peter Raacke gilt als das meistverkaufte Designbesteck in Deutschland und erobert eine stetig wachsende Fangemeinde in aller Welt. Unzählige Auszeichnungen und Ausstellungen im In- und Ausland bezeugen seinen Ruf als Ikone des modernen Designs.

mono-a. When introduced in 1959 mono-a heralded a new era – it was the first flatware that totally rejected any decorative elements. The name mono stems from the fact that the knife was originally made out of one single piece of stainless steel, a so-called monolith. At the same time, it is a reference to the singular nature of the design. Prof. Raacke’s design is the most sold designer flatware in Germany, and continues to enlarge its fan base across the globe. Innumerable awards and exhibits, at home and abroad, are testimony to the iconic nature of this modern design.

Wagnis Design. Der Entwurf von mono-a war ein großer Wurf. Das konnte vor über 50 Jahren noch niemand wissen. Dem Fabrikanten Herbert Seibel und dem Industriedesigner Prof. Peter Raacke, die das Besteck damals auf den Markt brachten, war zwar bewusst, dass sie etwas völlig Neues wagten. Hellseherische Fähigkeiten besaßen sie jedoch nicht. Und so konnten beide nicht ahnen, dass sich daraus eine Bestecklegende entwickeln würde. Trotz der euphorischen Stimmung in der Wirtschaftswunderzeit der Fünfziger Jahre war mono-a in gestalterischer und wirtschaftlicher Hinsicht ein Wagnis. Zuerst sah es gar nicht gut aus. Der Besteckfachhandel machte sich über das „Stück Blech“ lustig und die teure Investition drohte ein Flop zu werden. Doch dann fand mono-a über den Verkauf in anspruchsvollen Einrichtungshäusern seinen Weg zu den ersten Kunden. Und die waren von dem schlichten, unkonventionellen Design so begeistert, dass mono-a schnell in aller Munde war.

Intrepid design. The design of mono-a was a big gamble. No one could have known that 50 years ago. Prof. Peter Raacke and the manufacturer Herbert Seibel, who launched the product, were fully aware of the fact that they were daring something completely new. They did not have the clairvoyance to know that they were creating a flatware legend. In spite of the rampant 1950s euphoria of the German Wonder Years, mono-a was a dare both in terms of design and economic common sense. At first things did not look good. The trade made fun of the “piece of metal.” The considerable investment was on the verge of becoming a flop. mono-a found its way to the first consumers through sales to high-end interior design stores. These consumers were so taken by the simple and unconventional design, that soon after, mono-a was wildly acknowledged.

mono oval. Ebenfalls von Prof. Peter Raacke entworfen wurde dieses Besteck, das sich von mono-a durch seine ovalen Griffe und die hochglänzende Oberfläche unterscheidet. Es besticht durch seine Vornehmheit und wirkt fast schon luxuriös.
mono zeug. Das von Michael Schneider entworfene, extravagante Urbesteck stellt eine gekonnte Verbindung zwischen Archaik und Avantgarde her. Für das Messer stand der Faustkeil Pate, die stockschlanke Gabel erinnert an frühe Spießwerkzeuge und der Löffel an eine schöpfende Hand.

mono zeug Design: Michael Schneider, 1995 Edelstahl 18/10
mono tools. Designed by Michael Schneider, the extravagant primeval flatware skillfully bridges the context between archaic and avantgarde. The hand ax inspired the knife, the elongated fork is reminiscent of early skewing tools, and the spoon recalls a cupping hand.

POTT 22. Die Idee zu diesem Besteck kam Carl Pott, als er unter einem Kastanienbaum sitzend ein herabfallendes Blatt betrachtete. Die organische Form wurde zum Vorbild für den Löffel, aus dem sich die weiteren Besteckteile ableiten. Weniger mit der Natur, dafür mehr mit dem Gebrauch hat die markante, zweischneidige Messerklinge zu tun. Der zusätzliche Wellenschliff auf dem Rücken eignet sich bestens für einen kräftigen Schnitt. Als Besteck für die Olympiade 1972 in München wurde das Modell weltberühmt.
POTT 25. Äußerste Zurückhaltung kennzeichnet dieses Besteckmodell, das im Vergleich zur schwungvolleren, üppigeren Formensprache der 1950er Jahre fast puristisch erscheint. „Es soll ein ganz braves, konventionelles Muster werden“, schrieb Carl Pott über dieses Besteck. POTT 22. Carl Pott got the idea for this design while sitting under a chestnut tree and watching a leaf fall. The organic shape became the inspiration for the spoon, and the other flatware pieces were derived from it. The double-edged knife has less to do with nature and more with actual usage. The serration on the backside of the knife is ideal for carving into a piece of meat, while the other side is perfect for actual slicing. As the flatware of the 1972 Munich Olympics, the design became world famous.

When compared to the designs with much flourish, characteristic of the 1950s, it appears almost puritanical. “It is meant to be a very conservative and conventional pattern” according to the description by Carl Pott. POTT 32. Dieses Modell gehört zu den filigransten Bestecken im Pott-Programm. Charakteristisch ist die leichte, daumenförmige Einwölbung am unteren Ende der Stiele. Aufgrund ihrer kleinen Maße wurde dem Besteck 2012 eine Tafelgröße hinzugefügt. Diese Anpassung durch Ralph Krämer spiegelt die veränderten Dimensionen der modernen Essteller wieder. Durch seine Anmut und das ausgewogene Gewicht der einzelnen Teile ist das Besteck für zarte Hände wie geschaffen.
POTT 33. Einer der letzten Entwürfe von Carl Pott ist bis heute einer der erfolgreichsten im PottBesteckprogramm. POTT 32. This pattern is among the most delicate designs within the Pott program. Key characteristic is the thumb shaped indentation at the end of the handles. Due to the small size of the original the cutlery was added a table size in 2012. This adjustment by Ralph Krämer reflects the changing dimensions of modern dinnerware. POTT 33. One of the last designs by Carl Pott, continues to be one of the most successful in the Pott-flatware program. At the time of ist introduction, in 1975, the five-tined fork was a total innovation. Extending the width of the fork allowed for an easier scooping of sauces and vegetables, such as peas. The fine grooves at the end of the handles give this massive flatware a special allure.

POTT 35. Massiv und maskulin tritt dieses auf eine streng geometrische Grundgestalt reduzierte Besteck auf. Carl Pott schuf es ursprünglich im Auftrag Kölner Bürger, die es ihrer Stadt als Ratssilber stifteten.Wie kein zweites Pott-Besteck steht der Entwurf in der formalen Tradition des Bauhauses. Passend zur monumentalen Erscheinung hat die Gabel fünf Zinken. Frappierend ist der elegante Schwung der breiten, schweren Griffe.
POTT 36. Auch ein Besteck mit Ecken und Kanten kann sehr schwungvoll sein, wie dieser typische Entwurf aus dem Spätwerk von Carl Pott zeigt. Er besticht durch einen an den Griffkanten angebrachten Schrägschliff, der eine reizvolle Lichtbrechung hervorruft und das ganze Können der Besteckschleifer verlangt. POTT 36. Even a flatware pattern with corners and edges can have some flourish, as shown by this latter Carl Pott design. Part of the fascination lies in the beveled cut of the handle edges that creates a light effect that reflects the total artistry of the grinders and polishers. POTT Kinderbesteck Bonito. Dieses sympathische Besteck für Kinderhände ist der richtige Einstieg in eine unserer wichtigsten Kulturtechniken. Die Kleinen lernen, wie die Erwachsenen mit einem eigenen, voll funktionsfähigen Besteck zu essen. Das Messer ist scharf, die Gabel piekst und mit dem mundgerechten Löffel gewöhnen sie sich allmählich das Schlabbern ab. So entsteht diese Serie von Hand, in über 90 Arbeitsschritten – für jedes einzelne Messer! Molybdän-Vanadium-Stahl aus Solingen und ein neunstufiges Schmiedeverfahren machen die Klinge sowohl besonders hart und rostbeständig als auch geschmeidig und belastbar.

Sarah Wiener knives - produced by hand with 90 individual steps. POTT stands for superior traditional production. Using local woods, hand polished and oiled, superior steel and a handcrafted industrial production process that is initmately managed, the Sarah Wiener Pott knives offer a unique ergonomic pleasure coupled with chef-quality functionality. The molybdenum/vanadium Solingen steel and a nine-step forging process make the blade extremely hard and rust proof, yet supple and resilient.

Gebratenes und Gegrilltes einfach genießen. Das Zerlegen von gebratenem Fleisch war einst eine Kunst. Sie wurde gelehrt wie das Tanzen und Fechten. In ihrer Vollendung gipfelte sie darin, Geflügel in der Luft zu zerlegen, nur auf der Tranchiergabel aufgespießt.
