NOT NUMBERS Dr. Jerry Wilhm, Senior Research Manager AgroLiquid

Agronomy professionals can talk all day about a variety of the technical aspects involved in farming and growing crops. And many of them do, even me, or so I’ve been told. And when doing so, most assume that the audience is up to speed on the basics on which the talks are built. But that is not always the case. I was talking with some growers and dealers about the analysis of a blend of fertilizer products, when I realized that there was some confusion on what exactly those numbers meant. Look at any bag, jug, or fertilizer label, and you will see three numbers separated by hyphens; these numbers represent nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium content. Some fertilizers have more than three numbers, and in those cases the extra numbers represent other nutrients, but since the majority of labels feature just those three we’ll keep our focus on them for now. In any case, it doesn’t matter if it is liquid or dry fertilizer, as the numbers represent the percent by weight of each nutrient the product contains. The first number, which represents nitrogen, is pretty straightforward. Where it gets a little complicated is 4

with the second and third numbers, which represent not just potassium and phosphorus, but the oxides of those elements. This goes back to when fertilizers were heated with air to convert the phosphate and potassium to oxides – specifically P2O5 and K2O – and these numbers were used for the nutrient analysis. (This was referred to as the gravimetric analysis.) While modern analytical techniques are used to determine fertilizer analysis today, the numbers are still presented in terms of the oxides for historical continuity. The complexity arises when you realize that the oxides themselves are never actually found in fertilizer. The words written on a label for the elements of the three numbers are, “total nitrogen,” “available phosphate,” and “soluble potash.” Since the numbers represent percent by weight, the conversion is easy for dry materials. One hundred pounds of 18-46-0 dry fertilizer has 18 pounds of total nitrogen (0.18 x 100 lb), 46 pounds of available phosphate (0.46 x 100 lb), and 0 pounds of soluble potash (0 x 100 lb). If you have a blend of equal amounts of 18-46-0 and 0-0-

60, then the resulting blend would have an analysis of 9-23-30. Since the blend is half of each fertilizer product, the new analysis is simply the analysis numbers halved (divided by 2 or multiplied by 0.5) and added together. If the blended product is 75% 18-46-0 and 25% 0-0-60 the process is the same: multiply each of the numbers in 18-46-0 by 0.75 and each of the numbers in 0-0-60 by 0.25 and add the corresponding numbers together to get 13.5-34.5-15. In which case, according to the Association of American Plant Food Control Officials (AAPFCO), the nitrogen number can be listed as 14% for commercial sales purposes. Where the process of calculating the analysis of blends can get more confusing is with liquid fertilizers, where each product may not have the same weight per gallon. For instance, what is the analysis of a liquid fertilizer blend that is 75% Pro-Germinator 9-24-3 and 25% 20-0-0 ammonium nitrate solution? Refer to the product labels for the needed information.

1

Determine the weight of each product in 1 gallon of the blend

75% 9-24-3: 11.2 lb/gal x 75% = 8.4 lb 25% 20-0-0: 10.53 lb/gal x 25% = 2.63 lb Weight of 1 gallon of the blend = 11.03 lb

2

Determine the amounts of N – P2O5 – K2O from each product in the 1 gallon blend

9-24-3: 8.4 lb x 9% = 0.75 lb N 8.4 lb x 24% = 2 lb P2O5 8.4 lb x 3% = 0.25 lb K2O 20-0-0: 2.63 lb x 20% = 0.53 lb N

3

Add the numbers for each nutrient from the two products together

N: 0.75 lb + 0.53 lb = 1.28 lb P2O5: 2 lb K2O: 0.25 lb

4

Determine the nutrient percentages per gallon. (The gallon weighs 11.03 lb)

N: 1.28 lb/11.03 lb = 0.116 or 11.6%.

(there is no phosphate or soluble potash in this product)

(According to AAPFCO this can be expressed as 12%)

P2O5: 2 lb/11.03 lb = 0.18 or 18% K2O: 0.25 lb/11.03 lb = 0.02 or 2%

So the new blended product has an analysis of 12-18-2. Now there are certainly various other math or computer program pathways to this answer, but this is how it can be determined by hand. This is the percentage of nitrogen, phosphate, and potash nutrients in an applied rate of fertilizer. The same process would apply to other nutrients such as sulfur that are on the label. From here we can figure actual pounds per acre applied by multiplying the number of gallons (in this case 11.035). Then multiply this number by the percentages of nutrients, in decimal form. 5

High NRG-N™ is used in all crops that require applied nitrogen to achieve top yields. High NRG-N™ is an advanced formulation of 27% nitrogen, 1% sulfur, and trace amounts of known chlorophyll-building secondary and micronutrients. High NRG-N™ is stabilized with organic compounds, to protect the nitrogen and reduce losses from leaching and volatility. Not all of the nitrogen in High NRG-N™ is immediately available at application; it provides a controlled release of plant-available nitrogen over an extended period of time. High NRG-N™ may be used at lower volumes and produce quality and yields comparable to those crops grown with conventional nitrogen sources, providing increased profits from lower fuel and labor costs and application rates.

DIRECTIONS FOR USE

Technical Data

High NRG-N™ should be applied using any method that would enable placement in the vicinity of, but not direct contact with the plant roots or seeds.

Micro 500™ is a combination of five essential micronutrients: zinc, manganese, iron, copper, and boron. Zinc, manganese, iron and copper are key components of chlorophyll production and are critical for photosynthesis. All of them are needed during the early development of the crop, with boron being needed most during pollination. The proprietary technology contained in Micro 500™ allows for improved uptake and assimilation by the crop. Long-term replicated research using Micro 500™ has shown it to be an ideal combination with all fertility programs.

DIRECTIONS FOR USE

Technical Data

Micro 500™ may be used as a micronutrient additive in any fertilizer application method. Each crop has minimum requirements for micronutrients in specific proportions to each other. Manufacturing In the beginning, Douglas Cook and Troy Bancroft manufactured AgroLiquid fertilizers by hand, using 5-gallon buckets and a mere 200-gallon reactor just outside St. Johns, Michigan, on the site of the company’s now 900 -tillable-acre research farm. Later they moved to a separate facility closer to the city of St. Johns, where they also housed the company’s corporate office. In the early 2000s manufacturing facilities opened in Williams, Iowa and Goodland, Kansas. It wasn’t until 2010, however, that a dedicated manufacturing facility relocated to Ashley, Michigan, in AgroLiquid’s home state. Thirty minutes northeast of St. Johns, the small town of Ashley lies on the Great Lakes Central railway. An important factor in the company’s growth, the railway allows product manufactured in Ashley to be shipped nationwide, to stocking facilities, retail partners, and other AgroLiquid manufacturing facilities. Today the company has four manufacturing facilities. Ashley, Michigan Goodland,Kansas Stockton, California Williams, Iowa

Nutrient Deficiency Guide

Boron Boron is a micronutrient necessary for cell division and differentiation. It is also important for early growth and aids in pollen tube formation, making it essential for reproduction. Boron helps to maintain a balance between sugar and starch in the fruit, and it aids in the translocation of calcium. AFFECT ON YIELD Boron is needed continuously in the growing points of all plants. Because it aids in the movement of calcium to these points, affecting the strength of the cell walls, it is important for high -quality fruit production. Boron is also essential for the germination of the pollen grains and pollen tubes in plants and has a direct affect on yield. No pollination, no crop. Common symptoms of deficiency •

Shortened plant nodes

Leaves are sometimes thickened, brittle, and curled

Terminal growth dies, young meristematic tissue deteriorates

Reduced flowering and fruit set, poor seed set

Malformed or small fruits and physiological disorders associated with root & tuber crops

Calcium Calcium is a secondary plant nutrient. It is required for the formation of new cells and is present in cell walls and membranes. Calcium stimulates root and leaf development and helps to reduce nitrate-N within plants. Calcium is needed to activate several plant enzymes and is required by nitrogen -fixing bacteria. AFFECT ON YIELD In the soil, calcium indirectly influences yield by reducing soil acidity — lowering solubility and toxicity of manganese, copper, and aluminum. It also indirectly helps by improving root growth conditions, molybdenum availability, and uptake of other nutrients. In the plant, it improves fruit quality by strengthening cell walls, reducing bruising in shipping, and increasing storage life. Calcium is most readily available in soils with a pH of 7.0 - 8.5. Common symptoms of deficiency •

Death of growing points

Abnormal dark green foliage

Premature shedding of blossoms and buds

Weakened stems

Tip burn of young leaves in some vegetables

Water-soaked, discolored areas on fruits

Nutrient Deficiency Guide

Copper Copper catalyzes several plant reactions and is essential to chlorophyll formation and seed production. It is required for electron transfer during photosynthesis. Copper is also an enzyme activator in plant respiration and a component of numerous enzymes. AFFECT ON YIELD Copper aids in root metabolism and the utilization of proteins. Although copper deficiencies are not common, they can occur in western soils and will normally be more visible in cereal crops. Elemental copper can be toxic at low levels and application is rarely recommended as a nutritional supplement. Copper is most readily available on soils with a pH of 6.5 or lower. Common symptoms of deficiency •

Mild deficiency shows reduced plant growth

An upward cupping of leaves

Leaves generally remain green, however, some marginal chlorosis may occur if deficiency is severe enough

Shoot die back may occur

Poor pigmentation

Iron Iron is a micronutrient required for the formation of chlorophyll in plant cells. It activates respiration, photosynthesis, and symbiotic nitrogen fixation. Iron is required for energy transfer and also promotes flowering and fruit set. AFFECT ON YIELD Deficiency is common where manganese concentration is high or excess free lime exists. Poorly aerated soils and sometime high zinc levels will also increase deficiency. Low iron levels in the plant result in poor energy transfer from leaves to growing points or fruiting structures, thus slowing growth and lowering yields. Iron is most readily available in soils with a pH of 6.5 or lower. Common symptoms of deficiency • Early symptoms are a general paling of leaves • Young leaves begin to show interveinal chlorosis without becoming necrotic • Leaf blade tips remain green longer than the rest of the blade • Older leaves usually remain greener • Stunted growth, reduced yields

Nutrient Deficiency Guide

Magnesium Magnesium is a secondary plant nutrient. It serves as an activator of many plant enzymes required in growth. It’s the central atom in chlorophyll. It also aids in phosphate and nitrogen metabolism. Magnesium is necessary for the formation of oils, fats, amino acids, and sugars, and it promotes early growth and uniform crop maturity. AFFECT ON YIELD Magnesium (Mg) is often more deficient than calcium (Ca). It is usually more available in western soils but plants growing in sandy conditions may show deficiency. Magnesium balance with Ca must be maintained. When the ratio of Ca to Mg is too high (<8:1), plants will take up less Mg. Magnesium deficiency can also be accentuated by high rates of potassium. Magnesium is most readily available in soils with a pH of 7.0—8.5. Common symptoms of deficiency • Symptoms occur on young leaves first as slight interveinal chlorosis with some necrotic spots • Chlorosis appears on the tips of the leaves first and moves inward • Spots develop into larger interveinal necrotic areas • Leaves droop, and premature fruit drop may occur

AgroLiquid magnesium - containing products microLink™ Magnesium

Manganese Manganese serves mainly as an activator for enzymes involved in plant growth processes. It is needed for phosphorus and magnesium uptake and aids in the utilization of nitrogen. Manganese also aids in the production of chlorophyll for photosynthesis. AFFECT ON YIELD Manganese increases the availability of phosphorus and calcium to plants, accelerating seed germination and maturity. Because it plays a major role in the production of chlorophyll, it directly affects the health of the crop and influences whether or not a plant reaches maturity. In fruiting crops it would have an indirect effect on the size, quality, and sugar content of the fruit. Manganese is most readily available in soils with a pH of 6.5 or less. Common symptoms of deficiency • Chlorosis occurs in new leaves first • Young leaves begin to turn yellow and cup upward • Dark spotting develops between the veins, often more dense along the midrib • Crop often appears stunted

Nutrient Deficiency Guide

Molybdenum Molybdenum is a micronutrient essential for symbiotic nitrogen fixation in legumes and is needed in very small amounts by most crops. It acts as a catalyst in nitrate reduction and in nitrogen transport and utilization within the plant. Molybdenum may also be associated with diesease resistance in plants. AFFECT ON YIELD Deficiency is often observed as nitrogen starvation. It differs from other micronutrients in that its availability decreases with increased soil acidity and increases with soil basicity. Deficiency is most likely on a sandy or peat soil with a low pH. It is possible that heavy applications of sulfur may induce a deficiency. Common symptoms of deficiency • Plants show a stunted appearance and pale yellow foliage • Broadleaf plants exhibit a leaf cupping and marginal chlorosis • Older leaves are mottled, with veins remaining green; leaves curl inward and die along the tips and margins • Older leaves show symptoms first often mistaken for moisture stress

AgroLiquid molybdenum - containing products microLink™ Moly

Nitrogen Nitrogen is a primary plant nutrient. It is one of the more mobile nutrients, being moved throughout the plant to areas where it is most needed. Nitrogen is taken up by plants mainly in the nitrate (NO3_) or ammonium (NH4+) forms and is used to synthesize amino acids. These make up the proteins contained in the protoplasm of all cells within the plant. Nitrogen is also vital to chlorophyll and enzymes. AFFECT ON YIELD Nitrogen plays a major role in increasing yields. There is a direct correlation between the amount of available nitrogen and a crop’s yield. Nitrogen is required in large amounts during periods of rapid vegetative growth or regrowth. It is a building block for amino acids and proteins and acts as a catalyst for other nutrients. When applied early, nitrogen also increases the size and quality of fruit. Common symptoms of deficiency • Stunted growth • Small fruit size • Lower yields • Light green to yellow leaves; older leaves will show symptoms first; yellow starts mid-rib and moves outward to leaf margin

Nutrient Deficiency Guide

Phosphorus Phosphorus is a primary plant nutrient. It stimulates root, flower, and fruit development and overall crop maturity. Phosphorus is necessary for energy transfer and the formation of RNA and DNA. Most plants require additional phosphorus during cold weather, in areas of limited root growth, during rapid vegetative growth, and in highly calcareous or acidic soils. The higher the clay content in a soil the more immobile it becomes. AFFECT ON YIELD Phosphorus speeds up plant maturity and promotes seed production. It also increases water use efficiency and contributes to disease resistance. Phosphorus is most readily available in soils with a pH of 6.5–7.0. At higher pH’s it becomes fixed (tied up) by calcium and at lower pHs it is tied up by aluminum and iron. Common symptoms of deficiency • Plants are generally stunted and darker green • Some plants may show a purpling of leaves and stems • As deficiency increases, leaves may curl upward • Maturity may be delayed

AgroLiquid phosphorus - containing product Pro-Germinator®, Sure-K®, FertiRain™, FASE1™, FASE2™, GrowRight™, NutriRain™ 17-3-2

Potassium Potassium is a primary plant nutrient. It is essential for the transport of sugars and the formation of starches and oils. Potassium helps to regulate the opening and closing of a leaf’s stoma, which are important for the efficient use of water by a crop. AFFECT ON YIELD Potassium promotes root growth and, increases a plant’s resistance to disease and cold temperatures. It also improves the size and quality of fruits, nuts, and grains, and it is essential for high- quality forage. Crops that produce large amounts of carbohydrates (sugars) require large amounts of potassium for example, cotton, almonds, alfalfa, grapes, cherries, and peaches. Typically only 1—2% conventional potassium fertilizers applied to the soil is available at one time. Multiple applications of potassium during a season are often beneficial. Common symptoms of deficiency • Slow growth, tip & marginal leaf burning • Burning of older leaves, weak stems & stalks causing lodging • Low fruit sugar content & shriveled seeds • Yellow starts mid-rib and moves outward to leaf margin

Nutrient Deficiency Guide

Sulfur Sulfur is a secondary element crucial to healthy crop development. It is found in amino acids that make up plant proteins. Sulfur fertilization has also been shown to increase the seed oil content of crops such as soybeans and flax. Plant and animal scientists have shown that plant tissue should contain one part sulfur for every 15 to 20 parts nitrogen for optimum growth and production of high-quality animal feeds. AFFECT ON YIELD Sulfur aids in seed production and promotes nodule formation in legumes. In addition, sulfur helps to develop vitamins and enzymes. A lack of sulfur results in small, slowgrowing plants. In most fruits it is a major component of flavor. Sulfur is most readily available in soils with a pH of 6.0 or greater. Common symptoms of deficiency • Slow growth rate and delayed maturity • Young leaves light green to yellowish in color • Small and spindly plants

AgroLiquid sulfur - containing products eNhance™, accesS™, S-Calate™, Kalibrate™, High NRG-N™, FertiRain™, FASE1™

Zinc Zinc is a micronutrient that is important in several enzymatic systems within a plant. It is necessary for chlorophyll and carbohydrate production. Zinc controls the production of the plant growth regulator indoleacetic acid (IAA). AFFECT ON YIELD Zinc affects the terminal growth areas of a plant, and these are the first areas of the plant to show deficiency. High yields are impossible without zinc due to its importance in growth, metabolism, and photosynthesis. Zinc is most readily available in soils with a pH of 6.5 or lower, but this is only one factor that affects availability. High soil phosphorus, soil organic matter, biological activity, irrigation, and leaching also play a role in zinc’s availability. Common symptoms of deficiency • Decrease in stem length • Rosetting of terminal leaves • Reduced fruit bud formation • Mottled young leaves • Die-back of twigs after first year • Striping or banding on leaves
