Inspirational Sites We use a number of sites to draw inspiration from: artofthetitle.com, smashingmagazine.com, thefwa.com And the greatest strength common to all these sites is that the container does not overwhelm the work that they showcase. FWA is a sleek, beautiful site, with a really simple interface, that offers a number of ways to archive its contents, but is designed in a way that ensures that the work that they feature truly pops. The Art of the Title, again showcases the work more than anything else, and delivers it in a blog-like form which is familiar and minimal. Both FWA and the Art of the title showcase professional quality work which also gives the experience a certain amount of weight and credibility. The greatest strength of Smashing Magazine is not only does it have great content and a lot of it, but that despite so much “stuff ”, we are always able to find what we want from a simple search query and if we are in the mood there is plenty of featured stuff to browse through. So it encourages browsing without sacrificing organization. Also the interface is very “hip” which sits well with the content and the type of people who look at it. It also features a range of work, which means that one can look at professional work for inspiration and encouragement from fellow amateurs. It also offers a lot of great tutorials so is also a great learning and self improvement tool.

Controlling Idea “Performing is doing!” The website provides young performers and fans an opportunity and experience to perform, to be creative and to show their performing talent to the world through competition. The whole site is a mysterious journey and a game, which leads users to discover, to be challenged, to perform and to win. The experience will be structured as a game/competition with various levels and rewards. It will challenge young performers to find their teams or perform solo based on the given story arc and a character. It will provide a chance for them to showcase their unique skills and creativity by providing their own interpretations of what they are given in an act. The controlling idea will be interpreted through a “Carnival “ theme. In order to educate and train people along each level of the game (as well as for outside the game structure) the site will provide online tutorials of increasing complexity and difficulty as well as information on workshops around the province. However, full access to tutorials will only be granted to members, with only limited access being given to the general public. The design of the experience was inspired by competitions like Microsoft Imagine Cup and MOL Freshhh, each of which attempt to educate the public in their own particular industries through competition and experience. Talent shows like American Idol and America’s got talent also informed the creative strategy regarding the structuring of the experience.

Lemony Snicket’s: a series of unfurtunate events movie websites does two things very well - it remains true to the dry, pessimistic language of Lemony Snicket’s and it showcases it’s character as real live people. Count Olaf e.g. has his own website with an additional link to his “The most incredible Brilliant blog in the world”. It extends the character’s presence beyond just the movie or the books and almost lends it a sense of fantastical believability. A similar technique is used to promote the new Sherlock Holmes BBC TV series. Dr. Watson and Sherlock Holmes are both given real presence on the web in the form of blogs which adds to the believability of fantastical character. We will employ a similar technique to engage our users interest in a particular character whose journey they would wish to embark on through the competition.

User Scenario Exploratory User Jolin is a newly graduated history teacher in a secondary school who has an interest in culture and arts, and especially in circus performance. Jolin enjoyed couple of shows she watched from Sooul, and since then she has been paying attention on any new things happening with Sooul. After a long working day, she is resting at home and then browsing on the web. She clicked into Sooul’s website and thought of just browse around to see if there’s anything interesting. As soon as she got to the home page, there’s a big slogan about the new annual community competition. “That’s something new” Jolin thought. Then she clicks into it. There’s information and images telling her what this competition is all about. When she scrolls down the page, she sees a “how to join the competition” link. She is not really interested in participating in the competition herself. So she keeps on browsing other things. She sees a “gallery” link in the side bar, she clicks on it and then she gets to the common gallery where contesters uploaded their performing videos. She starts browsing around the thumbnails and brief information. Then she sees a really interesting one that’s appealing to her. So she clicks on that piece, then it plays on full screen. She watches some more and enjoyed some of them. She sees there’s a “vote” button. She clicks on it, then a window says “sign up to vote” pops up. Jolin really liked that piece she just watched and really wants to vote for that talent. So she clicks on sign up and then it asks for email address, she answers and gains voting rights. Then she gives her vote to her favourite talent. Jolin is still very drawn into the show she watched from Sooul lately. She is delighted when she sees there’s a “behind the scene” section on the navigation bar. She clicks on it. There are short clips from previous shows, information about performers and stories happening behind the scenes. Jolin browses through them, watches couple of show clips, behind the scene clips on full screen and then also reads about her stories on her favourite performers. These videos make Jolin wants to see Sooul’s performance again sometime in the holidays.

User Scenario Naive User 1. Richard is a typical 16 year old, -moody, hormonal and bordering on juvenile. His school days are coming to an end (good riddance) and college is an unimaginable drudgery. At best life seems to offer nothing more than a series of retail end jobs during the day, and moonlighting with a select group of fire-playing hoodlums at night. One day a banner ad for something called the World of Sooul catches his eye on Facebook. He clicks on the ad and is directed to the microsite homepage. The homepage is a fantasy that speaks of mystery and theatrical performances and a call to be a part of a community of similar performers and artists. A demo video plays showing the various performances of Sooul and the community of artists who create it. His interest piqued, he clicks on the Join Community CTA and is led to the Sooul artist community page. It consists of a message board of artist work and a forum for discussions. Beginner level tutorials are also available for various categories of performances. He scans quickly through the tutorials and discovers a link to a fire spinning tutorial. The tutorial is locked and available only to members. He impatiently begins the sign up process. Mercifully it's a short process and after signing a legal disclaimer that proclaims that he is accessing the content with parental consent he is in and eagerly going through the online material. He also checks out the latest videos posted by other artists. He also discovers information about local workshops, some of which are sponsored by Sooul. Curious now about the organization he clicks to the about page and discovers that Sooul is a troupe of performing artists operating in the Vancouver area. He checks out their show information wondering how many hours at burger king would it take to buy a ticket... Richard becomes a regular visitor to the site and begins to study the online tutorials. He sees the work of other artists and sometimes participates in the forums that talk about fire tricks. Feeling cocky and confident enough to execute a relatively simple trick he goes out one night with his friends and performs it for them. He asks his buddy, Gerry to film his performance using his iphone. Pleased with the video, he goes to the website and signs into his member profile to upload the video. He discovers that the site also provides an Iphone app that offers a simple way of uploading his videos directly from his phone to his member profile.

User Scenario Naive User He quickly downloads the app and uploads his performance, posting links for his video on his other social media networks. Months pass and while he is still working at another dead end retail job, he is rapidly learning and growing his performance skills. He even attended a small workshop a few weeks ago. A notification catches his eye on the homepage. Something about the Challenge of Sooul. He clicks on it and discovers that Sooul is holding a performing arts competition the winner of which will be joining the Sooul troupe of performers. He reads the overview of the competition and the round descriptions. They are challenging and exciting. Though he has some trepidation about his skill level he decides to register anyway to see whether he would make it through the screening round. He clicks on the register button. The competition allows him to register with his member ID, just asking for his Member ID and password. One click of a button and he is registered and excited to start participating. 2. Spike is an 18 year old acrobat. He's been training since he was a young boy. At 18 he is skilled but still without a steady position that would allow him to be a permanent part of a team of performers. One day he comes across a Challenge of Sooul banner ad on Twitter. He has heard of Sooul and seen one of their shows. Excited he clicks on the banner and is taken to the Sooul microsite. The home page sports a promotional ad about their competition. Clicking on it he goes to the competition tab and looks through the description of the rounds and challenges and the final prize for the winner. Excited about a possible opportunity, he clicks to register and is asked to sign in with his member ID or become a new member. He clicks on the register as new member button and signs up as a new member. After completing his registration for the competition he goes and checks out the community pages to see what his free membership entails. He is delighted with this treasure trove of industry connections and the opportunity of posting his work and is soon busy going through the rest of the information available....

User Scenario Power User John is a young performer, still in high school, who is eager to find out how well he is doing and what his chances are to enter the real world of performances and how he would do in a more professional environment. Because of that he has decided to become part of the Sooul website for young performers who want to upload their work and also take part in competitions. John already has a log in and a profile on the website, so what he usually does is: clicks on the link to the website that is in his favorite bookmarks bar, is directed to the homepage where he is greeted for the website already knows it is him through a cookie. Then he clicks on profile and goes directly to his profile to see if someone left him a comment. There he can see that Martha, another young performer from his community who he knows through the website, says that she really enjoyed the video he posted three days ago. After that he uploads the video he just shot with his IPhone and hopes that many people like it and it is chosen to go to the gallery. After that John decides to upload the video where he is making a trick with fire to the competition. That video has been on the gallery for a week now and he has got many “likes”. Since the competition is a different department within the site he has to sign in for it to be able to upload the video. Once he does that he is able to upload one video to compete with everyone else. 20 people are going to be chosen to go to the next round. After that he gets a message letting him know that his video has been send to evaluation. It’s already late and John folds down the screen of his laptop and goes to sleep.
