Fespa World Editor’s letter Welcome to this special preview issue of FESPA 2007, which in common with the show is, we hope, bigger and better than ever before! Over the next 92 pages you’ll find everything you’ll need to know about the exhibition, together with all the latest industry news and articles that include advice on colour matching, reveal the latest trends in digital textile printing, and unveil FESPA’s latest initiative in the form of ‘Sensations’, its special effects folder which has been designed to inspire greater creativity amongst screenprinters. On pages 32-33 you’ll also be able to catch up with outgoing FESPA President Hellmuth Frey and President elect Anders Nilsson, who respectively reflect on FESPA’s achievements during the last two years and share its plans for the future. Our FESPA 2007 preview begins on page 34, with a welcome from Managing Director Frazer Chesterman, followed by lots of useful information about Berlin, including a few suggestions as to how you might like to spend your down time! Pages 38 to 42 provide details of the FREE seminars that will be taking place during the show, together with potted biographies on some of the illustrious speakers who are scheduled to participate. Information on the Digital Halls starts on page 44 and includes a full exhibitor listing, floor plans and résumés on many of the companies who will be exhibiting. Similar information on the Screenprinting Halls can be found on pages 64 to 76, whilst the Textile Halls are detailed on pages 78 to 85. With more than 600 exhibitors participating this year, I can’t pretend to have included everyone, but I’m sure that you will find enough information to enable you to gain maximum benefit from your visit to the show! As well as all of their other myriad attractions, FESPA shows also provide the FESPA team with an excellent opportunity to get together with members of the national associations and for me to meet FESPA World readers. This year, the FESPA Stand will be in Hall 3.1 and I am really looking forward to greeting as many of you as possible there, during the first week in June. Let’s make it a date!

Sun Chemical creates UK consumables division

Xaar approves Agfa’s UV ink for OmniDot

Sun Chemical has combined its leading UK consumables businesses, Boss Graphic Supplies and WebXtras, to create a UK consumables division called Sun Chemical Consumables. To complement its established business in the UK offset market, the group will expand into the UK packaging sector. Central to the strategic expansion in the UK is the introduction of tailored packages of products and services to meet printers’ requirements. It is expected this will help Sun Chemical grow its reputation as a one-stop supplier to the graphic arts industry. Sun Chemical Consumables promotes and organises the sales and technical support of an increasingly diverse range of products, which are supplied through the ink divisions and

fully supported by Sun Chemical’s sales and technical service teams. On-site training and advice is also offered to provide best practices regarding safe handling, storage and use of the products. New additions include UV lamps, doctor blades, flexo mounting tape, as well as a new range of spill protection equipment. Sun Chemical Consumables Division, which includes technical support in its offering, is led by Charles Frost, who said: “As the leading provider of innovative products and services to the printing sector, the creation of this new division is another important step towards helping our customers purchase a wide range of products from a single source.” For further information visit: www.sunchemical.com

Xaar has extended its relationship with Agfa Graphics with the approval of one of the company’s UV-curable inks for use with the OmniDot 760 printhead, which was codeveloped between Xaar and Agfa. Agfa specifically developed the Xaar range of UV-curable general-purpose inks to achieve effective jetting of vibrant and lightfast colours to guarantee high-quality, durable results for a wide range of indoor and outdoor applications. Formulated using high-quality pigments with high faderesistance, the ink ensures longlasting results in outdoor applications, whilst its fast-curing capability facilitates highproductivity and offers excellent adhesion and a tough, scratchresistant finish on a wide range

Screen is holding a series of open days at Inca Digital's HQ in Cambridge over the next few months to showcase the Inca Spyder 150, which Screen has recently added to its portfolio of digital production technologies. Offering this product is part of its strategy to provide its commercial offset and digital printer customers with new business opportunities. “Our customers are looking to

diversify their businesses and these events are an excellent way to demonstrate the impressive capabilities and potential of the Inca printers,” said Bui Burke, Sales Manager, Screen UK. “These fit into any commercial print environment with ease and allow companies to enter the exhibition, advertising and retail graphics arena with a digital option.”

of rigid and flexible substrates. This makes the ink set the ideal choice for both internal and external graphics, such as banner and signage printing, POS, vehicle and exhibition graphics as well as backlit graphics and window displays. Jan Vangeel, V.P. Inkjet Solutions at Agfa Graphics comments, “After years of codevelopment of the Xaar OmniDot 760 printhead, this approval is a logical next step. Agfa Graphics is strongly committed to developing high standard inkjet inks and has invested a lot in the development of this Xaar UVCURE ink set, so it goes without saying that we are very pleased with this approval. ” For further information visit: www.xaar.co.uk

NEWS ROUND-UP – PRODUCT NEWS

New driver for packaging and label printers Artwork Systems has introduced a special driver for HP’s Industrial Digital Printing presses, which has been specifically tuned to drive the former Indigo presses, such as the WS4050, which are increasingly used in professional label and packaging environments. It is a big challenge for packaging and label printers to reproduce jobs on a digital press with as close a match as possible to that achieved via a conventional process. As most digital output equipment prints with a more limited range of inks

compared to litho, flexo or gravure, reproducing the same colours has previously been difficult. However, Artwork Systems’ new HP Digital Printing driver helps to overcome this hurdle by allowing printers to standardise on a set of inks, which are selected to produce a wide colour gamut. HP users typically standardise on Indichrome inks (cyan, magenta, yellow, black, orange, violet and green) as recommended by HP. With this standard set of seven colours, of which only six can be

on the machine at the same time, a wide range of conventional printing colours such as Pantone colours or other spot colour inks can be reproduced. Artwork Systems’ HP driver offers an automatic and flexible solution for taking PDF jobs from any environment and converting them on-the-fly to the on-board press colours. During conversion, ink usage can be optimised to ensure the greatest cost efficiency is achieved. When colours can be reproduced within certain tolerances using fewer inks, the

system will automatically default to use the most economical method. As well as automatic colour conversion, the driver is equipped with a specifically tuned engine that RIPs exactly at the HP press resolution and outputs a specific HP job ticket to the press. The first installations of the Artwork Systems HP Digital Printing driver will be carried out with Nexus and Odystar workflows. For further information visit: www.artwork-systems.com

Autotype turns art into science MacDermid Autotype has launched a software package, designed to make it quick and simple for printers to assess and improve the quality of printed images. Called Image Analyser, the new software package has been developed to run on a standard Windows based PC and, for the first time, makes it possible for printers to measure cost effectively the quality of screen printed text and graphics. There are several analyser packages on the market but most

are highly complex and can also be quite expensive. What is new, is the fact that MacDermid Autotype is making such a powerful program available, free of charge to its customers. It is generally common practice for screen printers to assess print quality visually or by the use of instruments such as profilometers and microscopes. Although these are important tools for controlling different stages in the printing process, they do not directly measure the

quality of the finished image or produce results that can easily be captured or repeated in a scientifically proven manner. By comparison, the new Image Analyser software uses a standard USB connected microscope to magnify and assess the most important areas of each screen printed job, with the output being captured by the software for subsequent analysis and even output to a spreadsheet for further statistical work. This is carried out in real time and the

results stored for use in quality control documentation. The Image Analyser software is designed to be easily calibrated using a special slide supplied and can be downloaded on a 30 day trial basis from the MacDermid Autotype web site. For further information visit: www.macdermidautotype.com

E-learning graduates! When UK based GSM Primographic, who is part of the GSM Group of Companies and a supplier of labels to leading OEM’s in the automotive sector throughout Europe, needed to organise further training for its staff, it selected The World of Print FESPA e-learning course. The company, who has a long history of screenprinting dating back to 1936 and has also adopted such alternative processes as flexographic and hotfoil printing on a roll, together with resin doming and digital printing over the last decade, primarily settled on the course because it offered its employees the flexibility to learn at home and at the company’s 8 FESPA WORLD SPRING/07

headquarters in Brecon, Wales. Tim Starling, Operations Manager at GSM Primographic explained: “It was becoming increasingly apparent that all of the newer technologies were being supported by various training courses provided by local Colleges of Further Education and Universities, but it was very difficult to find suitable courses for screenprinting. However, having initially registered for the trial module of The World of Print elearning course because of its accreditation by both FESPA and the DSPA UK, we quickly realised that its content and ease of use was exactly what we were looking for.” In September 2006, GSM Primographic registered its first two team members, an experienced

time-served screenprinter and a trainee, in order to evaluate what the course could provide. Happily, both veteran screenprinter Ricky Griffiths and trainee Jamie Raby completed the course and passed the final examination with flying colours! Ricky commented: “The course provided formal training to support my years of practical experience and provided official recognition for my skills, which

will be very useful in the future.” GSM Primographic was so delighted with the results, that it is now registering further team members, with the intention to get the whole of its print department trained during 2007. It is also enthusiastically anticipating the launch of the new Digital Print e-learning course that is currently under development.

Window coverings with flair Continental Grafix Ltd., the European manufacturer of high quality perforated printing media, has started 2007 with a bang, thanks to the introduction of its latest new product, panoRama Design, which can be used for roller blinds, vertical blinds, curtains and for many other sun protection systems. First shown at the recent Heimtextil fair in Frankfurt, panoRama Design is a white polyester textile, made of PET fibres with a black reverse side, which offers an open area of

approximately 20 percent, to provide a transparent seethrough effect. The bright white side is specially coated so that it can be digitally printed with ecosolvent or solvent inks and thus offers myriad design possibilities. Already causing quite a stir within the interior design sector, the product is probably the first to combine printability with a oneway vision effect. Many retailers are already using panoRama Design in innovative ways, which combine advertising with sun protection, without obscuring the

exterior view from customers whilst they are in the shop. The product is currently available direct from the Continental Grafix central German warehouse.

The sign and safety sectors discover GloBrite Jessup Manufacturing Company, one of the leading photoluminescent manufacturers in the USA and Continental Europe, claim that its unique GloBrite photoluminescent film is recognised in the large format, ondemand print arena as the ultimate medium for creating emergency and safety signage using UV cure ink digital printing solutions. The GloBrite film is constructed from high quality polyester with the addition of a metalized base for guaranteed opacity and dimensional stability and, unlike traditional vinyl based films, it is an

environmentally friendly material that remains free of shrinkage and edge ‘curl’. Photoluminescent safety and guidance signage is now a requirement in a variety of environments and is thus experiencing phenomenal growth throughout Europe. Jessup directly addresses UV cure ink print requirements by offering a film with the highest performing photoluminescent pigment technology available. Previously, printers using pigment, solvent and eco-solvent based solutions needed to use a top coating on the substrate to stabilise the

surface and maintain consistent printing, but, when paired up with a UV ink based system, Jessup GloBrite photoluminescent film is immediately printable, due to its high quality, extremely

durable polyester topcoat – using either a sheet-fed or roll-fed printing system. For further information visit: www.globritesystem.com and www.jessupmfg.com

NEWS ROUND UP – CHRIS’S COLUMN

Chris’s Column Chris Smith’s regular round-up of all the latest FESPA and Association news

It does not seem possible that FESPA Berlin is so close, but since much of this edition understandably concentrates on a preview of the show, I thought I would give you a taste of what we will be doing on the FESPA stand in Berlin. Throughout the duration of the show, visitors to the stand will be able to enjoy demonstrations of the screen printing e-learning course which, by show time, will be available in seven languages (plus, of course, English). So if you run a screenprinting company in Finland, Germany, Italy, Norway, Poland, Portugal or Spain (and of course the UK) and you want your staff to increase their knowledge of screenprinting, and to learn how to control the whole process, it would definitely be worth your while to spend some time examining the course content – I can guarantee that you will be amazed at how comprehensive it is! PDS Consulting, who produced the course, will be on hand to answer questions, in addition to providing live demonstrations, enabling visitors to obtain “hands-on” experience of what is involved. Consisting of almost 250,000 words, the sixteen lessons of the course cover every aspect of screenprinting and there are tests after each lesson. When they reach the end of the course, students can take a final examination and those who provide more than 85 percent correct answers will be awarded a certificate of achievement signed by FESPA, the National Association and PDS Consulting. We expect to be demonstrating most languages on the FESPA stand (in Hall 3.1), but it is possible that some will also be demonstrated in the Association Pavilions, which will be located nearby. If you want to find out more about the course, costs and enrolment procedures, make a note in your diary now to visit the FESPA stand during the show. On the subject of the Pavilions, I’m very pleased to report that there will be a 14 FESPA WORLD SPRING/07

number of National Pavilions at FESPA 2007, including Italy, Spain, Poland, Turkey and the UK and I am sure these will all be worth visiting, as they will be showcasing the products and services available from the smaller manufacturers and suppliers from these countries. The Portuguese Association (Apigraf) will also be present with their own stand, as will BVDM (the German Association), who, as the host country, will have their own booth on the FESPA stand. A number of other Associations will be present at FESPA, either for part or all of the show, so there will be a large area on the FESPA stand where Associations will be able to meet their members, prospective members or just fellow countrymen, who want to know more about the work the various Associations do. If you need to obtain some advice or help, or maybe just need a friendly chat with someone from your own country, the FESPA stand could be a good meeting point for you. Whenever a representative from the National Association is present, there will be National flags on the tables, so do drop by and look out for your National flag. We will also be featuring a pictorial collage of many of the Projects undertaken by the National Associations with FESPA support. Since November 2004, FESPA has been reinvesting in the industry by directly supporting a whole variety of events and activities organised by the Associations. In all, over 70 projects have been undertaken, ranging from workshops and seminars, to translations of handbooks, website developments for Associations, conferences and recruitment initiatives, to name just a few. At the most recent meeting of the Projects Committee, which was held last month, we agreed to support a number of recruitment meetings in Italy being organised by Siotec; a seminar in Helsinki being organised by the Finnish Association (19th April); a website update for the

Slovakian Association and a seminar in Slovenia (Celje 17th – 19th April). We are also going to look at ways in which we can perhaps help with translations of articles from FESPA World. A number of projects have been referred to the FESPA Board for consideration. It is worth mentioning a couple of other upcoming FESPA supported events. First, PSSiDC (The Polish Association) is organising a conference in Poznan during Euro-Reklama 27th – 30th March and the Austrian Association will be organising a stand at the Dataprint Show in Linz from 17th – 20th April. However, perhaps the biggest project FESPA has ever undertaken will be launched at the show. The ‘Sensations’ Special Effects folder is a showcase of screenprinted special effects, which illustrate just what enterprising printers can achieve by adding value with innovation. This folder will be kept under wraps until the exhibition, but we then intend to launch it with a bang! The objective being to whet the appetites of designers, print buyers and print agencies as well as end users, by stimulating the senses with some truly amazing effects. Look out for more information on this in the next issue. Just before we went to press, I was delighted to learn that the FESPA Environmental Guide (written by Michel Caza) – which provides comprehensive guidance on environmental issues and environmental management has now been translated into Spanish by AEDES as a FESPA project. The guide, which is currently available in French and English is also going to be translated into Italian, Polish and Slovakian. Hopefully, we may soon also be able to support a Finnish translation. The guide is available FREE to members of all FESPA Associations, so, if you want a copy in any of the above languages, please contact your Association Secretary.

Double celebration for Norwegian screen company

Norsk Filmtrykk, one of the major screenprinting companies in Norway, recently had two excellent reasons to throw a party. First established in Stavanger in 1946, the company, which specialises in industrial marking products, shared its 60th anniversary celebrations with senior employee Bjørn Helmichsen, whose 50 years at the company was marked with the presentation of the highest possible accolade, the coveted Golden Squeegee of NF! The presentation, which was made by Tora Aasland, the County Governor of Rogaland, took place at a special Gala evening that was attended by 60 guests, including the company’s 24 staff, who are employed at its three Stavanger and Oslo printshops.

FESPA DIGITAL PRINT AWARDS 07

The Winners! During February, the jury assembled to carry out the unenviable task of judging the various merits of the many entries to the inaugural FESPA Digital Print Awards 2007 competition supported by HP, which was officially launched at the FESPA Digital Printing exhibition in Amsterdam last May.

The competition, which was open to all print service providers, is designed to promote awareness of the new opportunities for digital print for communication and decoration and was judged by a jury, which comprised the editors of the national print industry publications, under the chairmanship of FESPA’s Michel Caza. Michel warned the jury at the outset that they faced a difficult, but hugely enjoyable task, further explaining that the judging criterion was both the level of creativity that had been achieved by each entry, combined with its appropriateness for its application. Michel went on to define ‘creativity’ as the blend of originality, coupled with good design, to convey the intended message, whether that be to inform or sell, or, in the case of decoration, to make inroads into new areas of decorative excellence. The judges also benefited from the advice and technical guidance of Christian

Duyckaerts, also a FESPA board member and the Technical Director of a major Benelux print company, and from the communications expertise of Tony Smith, Creative Director of Publicis, London Following a long and tiring session, Michel Caza said that he was very impressed with the level and variety of entries, commenting that the Awards provide an important means of recognising individual achievement and highlighting general trends in the digital arena. He also thanked HP for supporting the programme as an open-entry competition, with no restriction as to make of printer, substrate or ink. To provide an indication of the variety of projects that were entered, we are announcing here the “Gold” winners of each of the eight European regions that were selected, irrespective of the category in which they were entered, whilst in our Summer issue, which will be published to coincide with FESPA 2007, we will be

presenting the projects that were singled out as “Platinum” outright winners in each of the seven categories. These are: Interior, Exterior, Décor, Vehicle, Packaging, Textiles and Manufactured goods. Until then, FESPA would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the winners and to thank all of the companies who participated. FESPA TECHNOLOGY PARTNERS

Technology Partners In the first of a new series, in which FESPA World poses a topical question to its technology partners, Val Hirst asks HP’s Oscar Vidal and EFI’s Scott Schinlever to comment on their respective companies’ carbon footprints Everyone is now aware of the effect that everyday business practices have on the environment. In which ways do you believe that digital printing technology can be used to reduce a company’s carbon footprint and what are you doing to minimise your company's impact upon the environment?

Oscar Vidal, PSP Design Jet Product Marketing Manager, HP Barcelona Division, answers: Digital technology definitely helps to reduce a company’s carbon footprint – in the first instance its electrical requirements are much lower and digital printing workflow is much more efficient as the pre-press stations and their associated electricity consumption are eliminated, resulting in a very relevant electricity saving. Added to that, there are no screens to clean, with the all the attendant problems of water usage and chemical waste, but probably the biggest advantage is down to information workflow. Digital print companies and brand owners can avoid the typical inefficiencies, in terms of wasted prints, that are almost inevitable with very long runs and noncustomised print jobs. On-demand, short run digital printing enables customers to print the precise quantities needed at the required time, thus streamlining workflow and eliminating the waste factor. In addition, printers and brand owners can set up efficient distribution points, rather than relying solely on a centralised print facility. A good example of this is POP/POS prints and signage in the retail sector. Retailers can now use locally produced customised POP signage every day, rather than relying on items which are printed centrally and transported by road to all of the different shops. In the case of digital printing, it is the data that travels rather than the finished print, thus significantly 20 FESPA WORLD SPRING/07

reducing a company’s overall carbon footprint. At HP, we are developing programs that reduce our own environmental footprint, as well as those of our customers and partners. Our aim is to operate and develop products in such a way, that we help encourage everyone to become more aware of the imprint they are leaving for future generations. As a long-term leader in environmental stewardship, we have taken great strides forward - for example, we have developed Halo, a teleconferencing technology, which effectively reduced the amount of travel in the imaging and printing business by eight percent last year alone, saving 350 tons of CO2, in the process. We also ship our products by sea and road rather than by air freight and work closely with recycling vendors throughout the world to ensure that any products returned to us are processed in the region where they are collected. Scott Schinlever, Vice President / General Manager, EFI, answers: As well as making all of the usual arrangements to ensure that our operations cause as little environmental damage as possible, we have recently introduced a totally recyclable, eco friendly solvent ink. Although we are all familiar with the term eco, when related to solvent inks, it is not, as many seem to believe, short for ‘ecological’, but rather for ‘economical’, which is why we, through our ink company INKWARE, LLC.

have developed the first solvent-based ink to be made from a renewable resource (namely, corn) for use in the VUTEk product line. It is incidentally, the only ink recognised by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), but, despite its earthy origins, BioVu ink delivers all the benefits of traditional solvent inks without the compromises inherent in eco-solvent and aqueous inks. Like other true solvents, BioVu inks are durable, provide strong bonding to uncoated substrates, and resist mechanical wear and UV light. BioVu inks are designed specifically to run in highproduction environments, provide high print quality, and to print on to a wide variety of pressure-sensitive and textile materials and rigid media. Ongoing testing on additional substrates will expand the available range over time. Other benefits inherent in the new BioVu ink include lower disposal costs since there are no hazardous materials (hazmat), and odour is reduced on final printed materials and is less objectionable to employees and the environment. FESPA has recently announced that Agfa is a new Technology Partner for 2007. In the next issue of FESPA World, Agfa will be providing readers with an insight into the digital future and revealing what we can expect to see at FESPA 2007 and beyond.

INNOVATION

Marcus Timson, FESPA’s Group Commercial Manager, urges screenprinters to pay more attention to their marketing activities and reveals how a sensational new initiative from FESPA is all set to help them.

Unleash the awesome power of imaging! We are in a period of great change. How are screen and digital printers going to stay ahead? These days, we can be entertained when we want, how we want and, as we want. Information is now tailored specifically to our needs. This means anyone marketing anything at all needs to work harder, to understand their buyer and to deliver sufficient value in order to continue to grow their business. And this includes the screen and wide-format printer. The traditional marketing models from the 1950’s don’t work anymore and the main reason for this is really simple. People just don’t like invasive, interruption orientated advertising. These days, the average consumer might have more available money to spend, but their expectations are much higher too. They demand communication delivered in a creative, intelligent and inspirational way. Of course, we all know that the Screen and Digital Imaging sector is linked to consumer behaviour. So when there has been a seismic shift in the way we are all buying, we need to look at how we sell and engage with customers and to rediscover the creative power of screen printing and digital imaging. The good news is that brands still need our printing techniques to convey a message and encourage a sale, especially in the retail environment, at the point of purchase. They need differentiators and new ideas to help them deliver a message and get that purchase. It is said, according to 22 FESPA WORLD SPRING/07

Brassington and Pettitt (2003) that as much as 55 percent of people make their final buying decision at the point of purchase, so it doesn’t take a marketing guru to realise that brands have to deliver a visual experience for the buyer, in order to stand out in a highly competitive environment. It is inevitable that altered consumer behaviour means that brands have had to become more sophisticated in how they market themselves. The printer that can help them achieve this is going to continue to succeed and win business. Augustus Martin in the UK, winners of the recent Print Week Award for Innovation, in respect of its digital wallpaper system and its recent work with the O2 stores and brand, is being rightly applauded for its approach to providing its customers with inspirational print solutions. Daniel Pattison, Augustus Martin’s Group Sales Director, explains the approach. He says: “In what is now one of the most sophisticated areas of marketing, we need to continually push the boundaries to ensure that we stay ahead of the competition and provide our clients with what they need. As well as great looking POP, retailers also want

focused and specific local marketing on a national and often international level.” The POP element of a marketing campaign is designed to remind the customer of the benefits of the product and the theme of the campaign, as well as enticing them to buy. At every level, companies are looking for techniques to help them elevate their brand and give their campaign that “X” factor. Augustus Martin developed a new technique that really added something and inspired its client, 02. Liquid silver ink was deployed to create eye-catching, metallic high sheen effects in a variety of colours. In this case, silver was used and there was absolutely no need for reflective board. This technique can be used on

INNOVATION

Digital wallpaper solution localised areas of a design to create truly breath-taking point of sale or display material. The effect gave the graphics the appearance of being lit without the need for special in store lighting. Daniel continues: “Our clients now expect innovation and we encourage them to challenge us. We also regularly challenge them to make the most of the technology and techniques that we offer, allowing them to stay ahead of their competitors. This can be in the type of inks and effects employed, substrates and materials used, new display methods and even in related store profiling and POP allocation systems.” This approach should be applauded and noted. This clearly demonstrates the power of print delivered in an innovative and exciting format and the client responded positively to this approach. Augustus Martin is known for innovation and is consequently one of the most successful printers in Europe. This approach is clearly working for them, but do all printers think like this? Brands like to engage with solution providers that can listen, lead and solve creative problems. It’s important to meet with clients to ensure the quality of the job is correct – but how often do you meet to update them on your ideas and give them examples of how other brands have successfully deployed a print solution? There is a danger that we, as an industry, are increasingly becoming technically brilliant but are absolutely dreadful at

telling people about it! There isn’t an award for being “most modest media” or having the “most subtle and reactive sales campaign”! Do we as an industry want to be the best kept marketing secret? We are in the communications industry for goodness sake! Bob Holt is a leading industry speaker, screenprinting evangelist and is noted for “thinking outside the box”. Bob passionately believes that we can enhance business performance and sales results by changing the way we think and how we engage with existing clients. Bob explains, “Customers need to feel that they have entered an agreement with their printer that will deliver them the quality, inspiration and value they need. And value doesn’t mean cheap. You can either go down the route of competing on price, or you can take a consultative, collaborative approach and provide your customers with a solution that better meets their objectives and creates genuine results for their business. A serious brand will invest in a solution that delivers on their objectives and differentiates them from their competitors.” Bob will be speaking about inspirational selling at FESPA Berlin 2007 - so to find out more register for FESPA and attend Bob’s session. FESPA is educating, stimulating, encouraging and inspiring members and the wider industry to re-discover what makes us special. At FESPA 2007, Berlin we will be launching an innovative special effects book called Sensations, which is

designed to showcase all that it is possible to achieve with screen printing. Chris Smith, FESPA Projects Manager, explains, “Screenprinting is an inspirational process that delivers amazing results. We believe that by pulling together 33 of the most amazing effects, aligned with some high quality design, we will inspire printers to start selling to their customers on new possibilities. It’s simple maths! The printer can benefit by encouraging their existing customer base to demand more sophisticated print solutions and thus enhancing their profitability. This also gives the printer a competitive advantage. There simply is no other medium that can deliver these superb results and we need to rediscover what makes us different. Sensations will provide printers with a unique selling tool and we expect it to make a significant difference for all those who embrace and utilise it” The Sensations book is one of many initiatives FESPA is currently undertaking to promote the screenprinting and digital imaging sector. The success of recent FESPA exhibitions and the prospect of the World’s largest ever event in Berlin really shows that the industry is in good shape. So now is the time to change, with the future in mind. If you do as you have always done. You will get what you always got.

So unleash the power! See you in Berlin.

NEW TRENDS

New Trends in Imprinted Apparel Textile printing whiz, Charlie Taublieb shares his experiences of textile printing and highlights the latest trends. Every year there seems to be a need for something new to attract the buyers of garments, especially T-shirts, since they are relatively inexpensive and everyone has some. Some of the new trends are not new at all, only rediscovered. Some of the things we tried to avoid as good printers are now the things we strive to do, and some things are new. Let’s examine some of the old things that are new again. Discharge inks have been around for a long time. I first played with them about twenty years ago. Most discharge inks are water based, and although there are some Plastisol ones, I just don’t understand why someone would use Plastisol discharge ink, so I’ll focus on the water based ones. Discharge ink needs to be printed on 100 percent cotton and uses reactive dyes for its colour. It works by removing the dye that is present and replacing it with the colour in the discharge ink. If no colour is printed, then the colour of the garment when the discharge ink was used goes back to greige goods. What is different today, is that we don’t necessarily want to fully discharge the print, whereas in the past, we felt it was very important to do that. Since water based inks dry from the outside of the design towards the centre, we can achieve a tonal effect instead 24 FESPA WORLD SPRING/07

of flat colour. We can do this by carefully controlling the temperature and belt speed of the dryer, or we can flash the print for a specific amount of time. The next product that seems to have found a market, especially on the fashion side, is Burn Out. Burn Out is an ink that is printed on a 50/50 garment and only affects the cotton portion. What it does, is destroy the cotton, so that when the garment is washed, the cotton disintegrates and only the polyester is left. Depending on the actual colour of the cotton and the polyester, the results can be dramatic or subtle. Where it has come into its own is on womens’ tops. Instead of only printing the Burn Out, it is applied to the shirt as a treatment, by perhaps using a paint roller on a shirt that has been twisted. The Burn Out is painted over the shirt, the shirt is opened and sent through the dryer and then printed with a design that may, or may not, use Burn Out as part of it. Often the design is printed

with water-based inks, so it becomes very soft after washing. When the shirt comes out of the wash, parts are missing the cotton and the look is very retro. Being married, I know what my wife has spent on this type of garment and I can tell you, you don’t want to know! Water based inks have been around since as far back as I can remember. Most printers throughout the world print with water based inks because they are inexpensive. In the US and Europe, this was not the case for quite some time, because in order to print water based inks, you had to make your screen correctly and couldn’t walk away from your printing press without cleaning the screen first. Also, water based inks didn’t have good opacity, so printing on dark garments was a problem. Today, however, there is a trend back to water based inks because of fashion and customer demand. Some people think it’s because of environmental concerns, but that’s not true. Water based inks cannot go down the drain any more

NEW TRENDS

than Plastisol. It contains resin and the resin has to be removed before it goes down the drain, or it will be no better than the Plastisol. Water based inks are not softer than Plastisol until the garment is washed, then it should be so soft that you can’t feel the print. Other trends that still exist are the distressing of the garment so it looks worn. For years printers did everything they could so a print would not wash out. Now, we print so it looks like it is washed out! The main difference is, we don’t want it to continue to wash out. The distressing is done in the art department, not in production.

Special Effect inks are still in. High density inks and gels are still being sold heavily by athletic companies. The specific inks vary from design to design, but gels are used a lot, as are the high density and soft density inks, reflective inks, flock, and a

combination of all of them, with the inclusion of foil. The more complex the designs, the more coveted they are. Years ago, there was a trend to print over the entire garment. Some printers used belt printers instead of the carrousel presses, whilst others purchased printers that allowed you to print one side, flash, flip the print and print the other side, before removing the garment from the press. They’re back. Overall prints are starting to find their way back into fashion, but with a twist on the old look. 4XL and even 5XL garments are being used and the size of the print is enormous. One of the real problems is working with shirt sizes that are so large that two people have to handle them, in order to get them on a pallet to be printed. It won’t be long before special effect inks are added to the oversized prints and garments. That will be a real challenge to work with!

It was once said that as screenprinters, we could print on anything except air. That phrase can now be removed. At the last SGIA Show in Las Vegas, the shirt that won “Best of Show” did exactly that, had the ink suspended in air! Not all garment printing uses traditional methods. A number of years ago, Mimaki came out with what I think was the first “Direct to Garment” digital printer. Although the print quality was poor, it was a peep into the future. The future is here, now! Direct to garment digital printers are cropping up everywhere and at every price range and speed. Some can only print on light coloured garments, whilst others are capable of printing on light colours as well as dark or even black garments. Several questions arise. Is there really a market for these machines? If so, what? Who will buy these machines? What do they cost? What is the up and down side of them? Will these printers replace traditional screenprinting?

Let’s take these one at a time. Is there really a market for these machines? Yes, there are a variety of large markets for them. If so, what are the markets? The first and most popular market is over the internet. You need to have a really good website and to offer lots of designs that can be personalised. The person at home on their computer manipulates the image on screen to their liking and pays for the shirt over the internet. The shirt is produced and shipped in a day or two. The next one is impulse buys. By taking a small, direct to garment printer to an event, taking a digital photo and reproducing it on a shirt in a matter of minutes, you can make big money. Everyone involved with the event is a potential buyer. For example, a printer is taken to a gymnastics meet. Someone wins a particular event and you take a digital photo of them, type their name, position and the date under their photo, let them choose their garment, for example a -Tshirt, sweat shirt, or similar and, depending on the particular machine, let them stipulate the colour they want, whether it be black, white or anything in between. The beauty of this is that the winner and everyone involved with them

26 FESPA WORLD SPRING/07

is a potential customer! The prices charged are very high because of the excitement generated by the situation. A day later, that same person probably wouldn’t pay half as much for the same garment! Who will buy these machines? Almost anyone, from entrepreneurs to embroiderers, in fact, anyone who doesn’t want to send garments out to screen printers and even screen printers who want to be able to service small as well as large orders. I think there is a real market for the machines that can print on all colours of garment, firstly with companies who have clients that need to see a sample before approving a production run, and secondly with companies that have to produce a sample for a catalogue shot. This would save a lot of time and money, because even though the digital image is not exactly the same as the screenprinted image, it’s close enough from a distance. What do they cost? The price of these machines varies as much as the price of cars. There are machines that cost about €12,000, to machines that cost almost €200,000. Each one has its similarities and differences. Speed, ability to print on different garment colours, image quality and image size are some of the considerations.

What is the up and down side of them? Same as above, plus the cost of the ink. The potential negative is that a full frontal image on a garment that is approximately 12”x12” can cost anywhere from approximately €0.4 to €2 per garment, depending on the particular machine. On the positive side, most printers are charging around €10 to €20 per shirt and the shirts can be printed either one at a time, or in small quantities and delivered in a very short time period. Will these printers replace traditional screenprinting? With the exception of the Mimaki printer, which prints discharge inks, these machines can only produce flat colours using standard inks and the cost of the ink makes them expensive to run. In addition to that, the production speed is slow. So I don’t think traditional screenprinting has to worry for a while, but then again, you never know! What would you do if the media producer loves a sky-blue colour, but the customer doesn’t? It then becomes a matter of opinion and, if the customer isn’t able to clearly define his needs, it can become a matter of some contention. Clearly, if there is a colour target to be met, you need a binding original, so that it doesn’t come down to a mere matter of taste. You have to agree on a colour beforehand – it is as simple as that! This original colour agreement should carry through the whole production process. There are three steps: • Guidelines from customers • Putting them into practice • The testing and acceptance of the final product.

Binding Specifications – The Theory First of all, a binding specification can be anything available that can be used as a visual reference, for example, individual colour samples, such as original images, objects, proofs and print job samples, standardised colour samples like HKS or Pantone colour guides and colour charts. These samples are usually supplied or specified by the customer. The proof plays an important role as the visual reference tool. It is made during production and then becomes part of the colour agreement, following the approval of the customer. Also binding are the digital references, which form part of a colour agreement.

These include individual measurements of colours (e.g. CIELAB values), measurement tables that are the basis of ICC profiles and, of course, the ICC profiles themselves. Furthermore, RGB and CMYK values with reference to an ICC profile, can also be part of a binding colour definition. As combinations of such physical and digital references will be used in production, it will help to keep production standards of the whole workflow within pre-defined tolerances. Well-known current production standards are “MedienStandard Druck” for pre-press stages and “ProzessStandard Offsetdruck” for printing companies. Such general standards are being used as colour agreements, in order to reduce the need for repeated communication.

Meeting the Colour Target It is not easy to provide the correct colour guides for a print order, but, if you don’t have them, it is much more difficult to produce a satisfactory result, something which becomes even more of a problem if you cannot agree on what the correct colour is!

Binding Specifications – The Practice All of the above appears to be clear enough to avoid any misunderstandings. However, in practice, this is unrealistic. In fact, I would go so far as to say that this theoretical approach demonstrates a basic misunderstanding of the colour agreement, because these colour specifications and samples are subject to a lot of different factors. And, if you add all of these into the mix, the idea of a binding specification for the customer comes to nothing! Reproducing the desired colour depends on the printer performing a finely tuned balancing act between the precisely defined specifications and the numerous variables of production and this can usually only be achieved by someone who really understands what he is doing.

No Standards without Tolerances We believe that we can avoid the weakness of visual perception by applying standardised lighting and we also believe in standardised colour charts. Yet, if we look more closely, we would doubt all standards. We believe that measuring is safer than viewing, but we still see a lot of differences after measuring! The CMMs and Rendering Intents described in standards leave a lot of scope for individual interpretation, which cause us to doubt the efficacy of colour management. And, if you only pay attention to all the possible differences, you can quickly lose faith in your ability to meet the exact colour specification. But in truth, there is bound to be discrepancy. However, if you don’t adhere to standardisation, because of the perceived weaknesses, you are a little like a driver who ignores the Highway Code because of the very existence of accidents! Not only

will you get no opportunity to clearly define the colours, you will also exclude yourself from using open data traffic and an open production, neither of which can function without standards. If, on the other hand, you understand and accept the reasons for tolerances, you will be able to accept the idea of a colour agreement without too much frustration.

Prozess Standard Offset In cases where ProzessStandard Offset (PSO) and MedienStandard Druck form the basis of an order, it should be considered that the tolerances contained therein are quite wide. Customers often do not realise the extent of the possible tolerances, which leads to most of the complaints. Understandably, the reduction of the tolerances of PSO, for example, by increase of dot gain, to ensure production safety and facilitate repeated colour matching and adjusting, is a constant concern.

Clearly defined specifications given at the same time as the order is placed are the basis of colour agreement.

Photography, Photo Laboratory If you compare analogous photography on slides with digital image files, then the advantage of digital photography is obvious. While the quality of a slide is usually judged visually, the digital product can be defined within close tolerances. It is the same when comparing photo laboratories. Even though the analogous processing of film development is standardised, tolerances are so wide, that only individual agreements and test exposure will achieve visually satisfying results. However, if a laboratory puts a digital RGB file on paper, the colours are mostly defined through colour spaces. If the lab is permanently controlling its printers and is accustomed to the use of ICC profiles, then the photographer will get what he sees on his calibrated monitor – coloured prints as agreed.

Control of Colour Agreement The control of colour agreement should not be left entirely to measurement. Often the advantage of visual control is underestimated. It makes sense to work with a spectrophotometer for the definition of special colours right at the beginning of the project, so that CIELAB measurements can be used as an essential basis for production. The same principles apply when ICC profiles are used. Their basis is a set of measurements, which are used for

controlled production, which results in both digital proofs and the final output. Where does visual control come in? It is important for set up and control of machines and instruments, e.g. monitors, digital proof systems, LFP printers and photo printers, as well as printing presses. For this, images are as essential as control wedges or colour bars, such as the new ECI/bvdm Gray Control Strip for grey balance. And it should not be forgotten that the agreement should specify that colour is judged using standardised working place lighting and a D50 colourmatching desk. A signed digital proof should also be part of the colour agreement, even when you are trying to save time and money. Why? Because in an open production chain, the agreed ISO standard will not automatically lead to concurrence between proof and print. The printer will need to see a visual representation of the standardised proof so that he can see how he needs to control his machine within the framework of tolerances. Only the consistent use of such production standards will reduce misunderstandings to a minimum.

Summing up In the first instance, the customer should always define colours. With competent specifications, the results can be satisfying. When the order is originally accepted, the customer should be told about the possibility of eventual colour changes and shown

examples of the sort of differences that can occur. Every car dealer will show colour samples to his customer so that he knows what “midnight blue metallic” looks like. Safe instructions to create files will exclude unrequested deviations. Explain to your customer how important it is for him to provide a print or proof sample, which can be verified visually and by measurements. Production should comply with the colour agreement and colour management should be used in such a way as to guarantee that colour deviations remain within the original colour specification. Continuous ‘safe’ production is the result of a well controlled process, as well as measurements and visual control. Ignore a single control element during production and you can effectively destroy the whole order. The best basis for achieving standardised results is the ICC-Standard, which facilitates reproduction within close tolerances, even when using different printing processes and different substrates, without the need for additional communication. The final product meets the colour agreement when it fulfils the specifications of the customer. The fulfilment of these specifications must be comprehensible on the basis of samples and control means. And when can you be certain that you have achieved the precise colour reproduction required? When the customer gives a satisfied nod and pays the invoice, of course!

Softproof. Maximum safety in production and colour can be reached only by combining both measurements and visual control.

PAST AND PRESENT PRESIDENTS

Goodbye….. Hellmuth Frey, who hangs up his chain of office at FESPA 2007, reflects on his term as FESPA’s president “I was first introduced to FESPA in 1963, when my parents took me to the very first FESPA exhibition in Copenhagen, which was also the first time I had the opportunity to meet with screenprinters from across Europe. Since then, I have visited every FESPA show and have always felt at home amongst the FESPA family. Indeed, I believe that this feeling of comradeship that FESPA membership engenders is central to our continuing success. It goes without saying then that I feel both proud and honoured to have become FESPA’s President. But I have to point out that the President of FESPA is also a dayto-day member of the FESPA board and without the collective hard work and enthusiasm of my fellow board members, I would have achieved very little on my own account, so I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of my colleagues at FESPA who have done so much to make my term so enjoyable. Fortunately, prior to taking up the Presidency, I experienced a small taste of what the role would entail, during my time as Vice President in 2004. One of my duties during that year was a visit to Mumbai with Nigel Steffens, for talks with the Indian Association, which lead to the subsequent launch of FESPA World Expo India in December 2005, the first FESPA show to be held outside Europe. However, my term of office actually began in June 2005, happily coinciding with the FESPA 2005 show in Munich, which was the first exhibition to be organised by our own in-house exhibition team. The show’s undoubted success completely vindicated the difficult decision we made to organise the show ourselves and the team surpassed itself, making the exhibition more effective, creative and professional than ever before. We also added a more personal touch to the event and have worked hard to build good relationships with both exhibitors and the international business community. Furthermore, the success of that show provided us with a perfect springboard for other events. 32 FESPA WORLD SPRING/07

Since then, we have taken the opportunity to introduce and launch new exhibition concepts to further develop the growth and profile of our specialised printing sectors. Following the success of the first Indian show, FESPA World Expo India is scheduled to take place this December and will be followed in November 2008 by a further exhibition in Asia, with the launch of FESPA World Expo Asia-Pacific in Bangkok, a show that is designed to highlight the development of screen and digital printing in the Asian Pacific region. There were also new ideas to develop within Europe. The European trade show calendar is very crowded and having identified that many screen and digital printers and industry suppliers wanted to attend just one, all encompassing event, rather than the many smaller, more regional shows, FESPA responded with the launch of FESPA Digital Printing Europe, which was held at the RAI in Amsterdam last May. So successful was this concept that FESPA Digital Printing Europe will, in future, take place in the years when there is no traditional FESPA exhibition. Accordingly, the next event is scheduled for April 2008 in Geneva, Switzerland. The success of our shows has directly benefited the member associations of FESPA, the national screenprinting and digital printing associations. Because, contrary to what many people believe, there is much more to FESPA than simply organising exhibitions. As the umbrella association of the national screen and digital printing associations, we have a responsibility to screen and digital printers throughout Europe, as was evidenced during last year’s Annual General Assembly, where representatives from the 32 FESPA member associations met to report on their activities and to plan future initiatives together. This annual gathering always provides a heart-warming opportunity to witness how important a part personal contact plays in ensuring the future growth and prosperity of the screen and digital sectors. And the revenue generated by our shows is used to further

enhance this ideal. To this end, the FESPA Projects initiative has been another important part of my work. Following the formation of the elected FESPA Projects Committee, FESPA is now funding and supporting many national projects and activities, including seminars and conferences, the e-learning programme, the ‘Sensations’ special effects folder that will be launched in Berlin, and the installation and on-going support of the National Associations’ websites to name just a few. As always, however, much still remains to be done. One of the most pressing items on our agenda concerns the improvement of our relations with companies working within the industrial screenprinting sectors, something which even the national associations are finding difficult, as in most industrial sectors, screenprinting is but a small part of the overall product offering. Gradually however, we are making progress and must continue with our efforts to integrate industrial screenprinting applications into our shows and to communicate to the professionals working within this sector the benefits of FESPA membership. I’m really looking forward to the FESPA exhibition in Berlin, which is already bigger than the last event in Munich. Visitor pre-registrations are expected to reach a new high and the exhibition is taking place in an interesting and vibrant city. FESPA, together with the German EU presidency and the G8 summit meeting, is one of the most important events that will be taking place in Berlin this year and we can all look forward to a very successful show. Finally, I would like to close by wishing my successor, Anders Nilsson, every success with his new and exciting duties within the developing FESPA organisation and I promise that he will have the full backing of the entire FESPA family as well as the ongoing support of the FESPA Board.

So from me, for now it’s a case of Good Luck and Goodbye!”

Hello….. Anders Nilsson, the President Elect of FESPA reveals his plans for the Association to Val Hirst Anders Nilsson, who will take up the FESPA Presidency at FESPA 2007 in Berlin has worked in the industry for nearly 30 years and, in a neat twist is now the owner and Managing Director of Gamleby Screen, the company where he originally completed his screenprinting apprenticeship. Specialising in large format screen and digital production, especially for point-of-sale materials, sign and banner applications and vehicle graphics, Gamleby Screen now operates from headquarters just outside Stockholm, and employs six people. Looking back at a career, which has included a stint as a Production Manager, as well as five years on the other side of the fence, when he worked as a salesman for an industry supplier, Anders remarks that he has witnessed a great deal of change, which he cheerfully pronounces to have been ‘mostly good.’ He reflects that when he first acquired Gamleby Screen in 1992, it coincided with the advent of the computerised office, a trend that has continued apace and which has greatly precipitated the demand for immediacy. He says: “Computerisation, together with our increasing reliance on email and the internet, has caused lead times to become shorter and shorter. Because customers know, that theoretically at least, they can send files electronically and receive completed output within 24 hours, more and more, that’s what they expect to get and thus projects which used to be planned weeks in advance are now frequently left to the last minute – which can make things very hectic for us poor printers!”

He adds that, of course, digital printing is also responsible for bringing about some of the biggest changes. “In the beginning digital printers were slow and the quality was not so good,” he says, “but now, most screenprinters are happily using digital methods of reproduction to fulfil the demands of specific jobs. In fact it is more a question of deciding how best a job can be completed and selecting the method that suits. And nowadays, that could easily include litho printing as well as screen and digital printing.” A member of the Swedish Screenprinting Association since 1995 and its President since l998, Anders has also been a member of FESPA Board for five years and says that he is very excited that his presidential term coincides with a time when the industry is really opening up. He says: “There are no borders in the world of graphics – increasingly it is about providing what the client wants, in the quickest, easiest, most cost effective and, hopefully, most profitable way possible. Over recent years the nature of our clients has also changed, very often we are dealing with media companies and advertising agencies who require something more of us than merely reproducing standard graphics. They positively encourage creative input and often seek advice as to the best usage of materials and application of special effects and processes. If it is to continue to thrive and prosper, FESPA has to keep up with all of these myriad changes as they occur and one of the ways we can do this, is by encouraging new members from outside our traditional areas. FESPA has already

made huge strides forward over recent years in a geographical sense and now we need to match that by encouraging the practitioners of other printing disciplines in wider areas of application to join us too.” As someone who enjoys getting out and about and meeting people, Anders intends to make his open minded approach the defining feature of his presidency. He explains: “I want people to think of FESPA as a very receptive, responsive and proactive organisation and also a very inclusive one. We are, in fact, a very democratic organisation and our aim is to provide benefits that can be enjoyed by the wider screen and digital printing community.” He continues: “I think that nothing reflects this goal better than the FESPA Projects initiative and one of my aims is to institute a President’s Project, the specifics of which are currently under discussion.” Anders also feels that FESPA needs to take a lead in guiding its members through the potential environmental minefield, saying that whilst everyone now understands why it is necessary to operate in as ecologically friendly a way as possible, care also needs to be taken to ensure that printing remains a viable and affordable option. He concludes: “It is, I think, FESPA’s job to help our members achieve their fullest possible potential, technically, creatively and of course, profitably! And I am really looking forward to working with the FESPA Board and all of our member associations to devise ways in which we can do just that.”

“I want people to think of FESPA as a very receptive, responsive and proactive organisation and also a very inclusive one. We are, in fact, very democratic and our aim is to provide benefits that can be enjoyed by the wider screen and digital printing community.” FESPA WORLD SPRING/07 33

FESPA 2007 – THE POWER OF IMAGING

Hello and Welcome! The FESPA 2007 exhibition is set to be the biggest on record! After the success of FESPA 2005 it was a tall order but the exhibition continues to grow and this show is going to be even bigger and better than ever before! With an unprecedented: number of exhibitors (over 600), 11 halls and 32,000m of stand space, I can’t wait to open the doors on Tuesday 5th June!

And it isn’t simply the size of the exhibition, it’s the quality of the exhibitors too, many of whom are using FESPA 2007 as the official launch pad for their new products, making it a truly ‘must attend’ event. Part of FESPA’s appeal lies in the fact that it provides visitors with an excellent opportunity to see the widest possible range of products and technology. I like to use the analogy of a car exhibition: you wouldn’t bother going to a show where all you could see is one range from one manufacturer, for example the BMW 320’s. You want to see everything currently on offer– Coupes, 4WD, Diesel, Automatics, the five series and all of the many different specification permutations. What you really want to see is everything that BMW has to offer. And that explains why so many people come to FESPA. We are delighted to have the support of a number of industry leading companies this year, such as HP, Marabu, EFI VUTEk and SAATI and salute all of the exhibitors who work so hard to help us make our shows successful. Besides the exhibitors, we will be offering a number of additional features, which have all been designed help you make the most of your visit. On the show floor we will have two showcase theatres that will be providing a number of educational seminars delivered by recognised industry experts. In addition, we will also be hosting a digital debate, a print buyers’ forum and providing printers with the opportunity to obtain useful marketing skills. And when the day is over, why not enjoy an evening’s entertainment? Our ‘Cool, Fun and

Swingin’ FESPA Gala Night is an informal evening event that will provide you with a great opportunity to network with other professionals, as well as giving you the chance to ‘let your hair down!’ Tickets are available online at www.fespa2007.com As an organisation, FESPA continues to expand and due to the recruitment of some additional staff members, FESPA 2007 is now fully organised by the in-house exhibition team, because we believe that dedicated staff ensures that everyone receives the best service possible. There have also been developments to FESPA as a federation. Part of our goal over the last two years has been to start providing a comprehensive service to the industry by supporting a number of special projects. By acquiring new staff and re-investing the profits realised through our shows, we have been able to provide educational facilities and other services that benefit the entire industry. One of these initiatives is our new e-learning programme, which has been very well received and will be available in several languages by the end of 2007. We are also producing a demonstration folder, which will illustrate the range of different effects that can be achieved with screenprinting. This folder, ‘Sensations’, which is being officially launched at FESPA 2007, will be distributed to a select number of printers and print buyers and will show the full potential of screenprinting in the production of inspirational and creative marketing, in line with evolving consumer demands. To view these products and to discover more about the projects we are undertaking, visit the FESPA stand – G320 (Hall 3.1). The FESPA team and I look forward to seeing you there!

FESPA 2007. THE POWER OF IMAGING

What can visitors to FESPA 2007 expect to find in the Digital Halls? Val Hirst makes a few suggestions. Over the last couple of FESPA exhibitions in Madrid and Munich, the Digital Halls have been described by many visitors as the most exciting, largely because they provided a backdrop to the launches of several new machines, some of which have marked new milestones in the development of digital printing technology. This year, although there will certainly be some racy new printers on show, the digital sector has reached a stage of greater maturity and, rather than showcasing ground breaking new products, many companies will, instead, be demonstrating how they have honed and refined their existing models to provide faster speeds and enhanced quality. Visitors too will be looking at the bigger picture. Since most companies have by now already invested in a level of digital equipment which suits their current requirements, it will be more difficult for hardware vendors to persuade them to acquire the next ‘must have’ printer! I predict that this time around, many visitors will be equally interested in all of the peripherals that will help them make the difference between just producing prints and creating really profitable output. Because in the same way that many digital printers, of all denominations, have now been sold, so the market price of output has fallen and it is no longer quite so easy to realise a reasonable amount of profit on digitally printed output. Shrewd digital print providers are thus looking for all of those extras that will help to differentiate them from their competitors. When excellent quality and prompt and

44 FESPA WORLD SPRING/07

courteous service are taken as a given, companies need to ensure that their presentation is as good as it can possibly be in order to command a premium price. This is why I think the finishing equipment and materials being shown by companies such as GBC and Seal will be such a draw. Good finishing is always crucial and companies are now interested in finding ways in which the process can be streamlined. Esko’s Kongsberg cutting tables enable digital printers and signmakers to produce cost effective, ready to use POP and display materials and signage, but I will also be visiting the Mimaki stand to see its new low cost flatbed cutter which, rumour has it, is being offered at a price attractive enough to tempt even the smallest company! Smaller companies will also be looking at the entry level UV flatbed printers such as Colorspan’s Displaymaker series, Mutoh’s Cobra and efi VUTEk’s PV series which enable them to print directly on to rigid materials and thus further extend the portfolio of services they can offer their clients. Other companies have already decided that, with so many competitors in the graphics market, it is well worth looking at how they can use digital printing technology to service the industrial printing sectors. And certainly, if any company has managed to develop a machine that can fulfil the demands of this type of printing in a true production environment, they are likely to attract the biggest crowds of the show! I’ll probably start my search at the Xaar stand, since it is the printheads which determine the

success of such enterprises, before visiting Inca, who has already declared its intention to develop products for other markets and Augend, who will be showing its new F16 high productivity press and has hinted that further exciting developments are in the pipeline. One thing I will ensure this time is that I won’t become so mesmerised by the printers on show that I forget to notice the ‘widgets’. Widgets is the name I apply to all of those modest seeming little products, often being shown by smaller exhibitors, which, although they may never set the world on fire, often make all the difference to both a company’s operation and its finished output. Following the FESPA Digital show in Amsterdam last year, industry consultant Mark Godden wrote a whole article in this magazine detailing some of the amazing and useful little innovations which he had seen at the show, most of which, I confess, had simply passed me by! However, probably one of the greatest strengths of a show like FESPA is that it provides the perfect showcase for small manufacturers and entrepreneurs to introduce the sort of inexpensive but perfectly conceived items that help to transform a good print into a great one, by dint of adding the perfect fastening, overglaze, hanging structure or lighting device. I shall certainly be looking out for them and I sincerely hope that you will be too!

FESPA 2007. THE POWER OF IMAGING

Marabu’s Friedrich Goldner advises what visitors should be looking out for when they visit the screenprinting halls

64 FESPA WORLD SPRING/07

This time around, visitors to our stand will be able to learn more about our extensive services and also see the impressive range of new products, which are available in formulations to suit all three print technologies. Screenprinters will appreciate the launch of our new UV series, Ultragraph UVSP, which achieves a new benchmark in regard to curing speed. Users will be able to take full advantage of a new level of reactivity, which beats both older, less powerful UV curing equipment and new equipment, using reduced UV power, leading to significant cost savings. UVSP can be used in conjunction with a vast range of substrates to produce POS/POP applications for both interior and exterior use. UVSP has already produced excellent results when used on four colour printing lines and further underlines Marabu’s commitment to successful graphic screenprinting. We will also be using the show to unveil our latest products for the industrial screenprinting sector. With regard to the container printing market, we have introduced a new UV ink line, Ultrapack UVC, which fulfils all the requirements of a modern ink line and adds pre-treated, HDPE/LD-PE, to a substrate range that already includes PP/PETG/PETA/PS/PC. Ultrapack UVC also combines ease of handling with an appealing high-gloss finish. The industrial glass sector is undoubtedly moving towards UV, and our latest ink line, Ultraglass UVGL, which requires no post baking, is at the forefront of this technology. It has already been successfully used on everything from glass bottles to drinking glasses, as well as architectural flat glass. The addition of the silicone-free rotary screen ink, UltraRotaScreen UVSF, for combination printing with UV Flexo inks, is another product which is gaining more and more ground, as it achieves a much better Flexo ink acceptance than traditional inks. Flatbed label screenprinting is more popular than ever and is used to fulfil the growing demand for braille/tactile, highgloss/matt and high-gloss metallic labelling, to mention but a few variations. Our new matt black Ultrastar UVSM 181, which is especially designed for printing wine labels, offers a smooth matt effect and excellent reactivity. The highest quality membrane switch

printing is still achieved with solvent based inks and our new Maraswitch MSW ink series offers a wide range of inks to satisfy the demand for opacity, transparency, and metallics, whilst also providing both formability and excellent chemical resistance. Digital printers should look out for our two new ink series, the Marajet DI-R, which was especially developed for the highly popular Roland VersaCamm and Soljet models. DI-R, a mild solvent ink, combines a wide colour gamut with good chemical and mechanical resistance. We are offering a complete package to facilitate an easy ink change-over, including all spare parts. Marajet DI-CP has been designed for use with the successful Seiko Colorpainter printers and offers improved drying characteristics for greater productivity. It comes complete with an innovative, chipless bulk system, which is very economical. For pad printers, we have introduced the new Tampagraph TPGR, which is designed for the specialty advertising sector and sets new standards as far as opacity and substrate versatility are concerned. Until now, there has never been an ink series that has addressed the issue of opacity, but TPGR is the perfect all rounder, which achieves excellent printability across a wide range of applications and substrates. This year, we will be marking an important anniversary - 20 years of delivering UV Screen inks for graphic and industrial applications - and consequently, we will be extending a very warm welcome to visitors who would like to help us celebrate this very special event. See us on Stand B410, Hall 2.2. Friedrich Goldner.

“If we look back and consider what has happened in screenprinting since FESPA 2005, in both the graphic and industrial sectors, we can see that there have been several new developments. In graphic screenprinting, the most noticeable advances have been made in the area of computer to screen (CtS) technology, as was formally acknowledged during a recent presentation at the ESMA CtS forum, which enumerated the many options now available. These developments are sure to be one of the highlights of the show, since visitors will have the opportunity to see these systems ‘in the flesh’. These developments in CtS have also been complemented by faster emulsion technologies, which, I am sure will also be much in evidence. The trend towards multi-colour production lines remains unchanged, with print sizes seeming to get even bigger. Cylinder presses, which are also enjoying continuous improvements, are still the first choice when speed and special effects are of prime importance and, increasingly, UV Inks for graphic screenprinting can now be used with a wide range of substrates. There are some new products that offer higher reactivity and can be used safely on both older UV equipment and on newer machines, with greatly reduced UV output, resulting in significant cost savings. The industrial screenprinting sector has also seen big changes since 2005. For example, there are now UV Inks for use on glass, which do not require an additional baking process, thus helping screenprinters to make the transition from ceramic inks to UV curing inks. In addition, rotary label inks have been formulated to suit better combination printing processes, such as UV Flexo technology, whilst UV inks for container printing can also now be used in conjunction with a wider range of substrates. Looking back at the Marabu stand at FESPA 2005 in Munich, our theme was ‘Marabu Ultra Vision – the Future is called‘, which marked the fact that, for the first time, we were able to deliver UV ink solutions in all our three specialty printing technologies: screen, pad, and digital. Since then, our UV pad and digital products have been used for numerous applications and are now a fully integrated part of our overall product range.

Friedrich Goldner, Director of Marketing & Communication for printing ink manufacturer Marabu, joined the company in 1991, since when he has helped to establish it as one of the market leaders for optical disc printing and digital printing Inks.

FESPA 2007 – THE POWER OF IMAGING

The Garment Decoration Halls Textile printing expert Charlie Taublieb provides a foretaste of what visitors can expect to find in the textile halls

Not having access to all of the manufacturers of ‘Direct to Garment’ digital textile printers, I can only speculate on what we might see at FESPA 2007, but one thing is for sure, if you think things haven’t changed much since FESPA 2005, wait till you get to FESPA 2007! But if you’re interested in seeing the latest advances in ‘Direct to Garment’ digital textile printing, FESPA 2007 will certainly have what you’re looking for. In 2005, there were several companies showing machines, who will probably be showing again, but this time with printers that can actually print on garments of all colours, at speeds that can be used in production environments. In many ways, what we saw at FESPA 2005 was the birth of an industry, this time around we will be witnessing its adolescent years, and each FESPA exhibition from now on will mark the stages of its growth until it reaches full maturity. There will certainly be far more machines than we have ever seen before under one roof, with prices that range from relatively low, to fairly high. Each of the machines caters for a particular audience and they all have much in common, as well as many differences. Inks will vary from solvent based to water

based; print heads from low resolution to high resolution and speeds will vary from slow to fast. And don’t be surprised to see digital printers working in tandem with more traditional machines. Brother makes both digital printers and embroidery machines, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see them work in combination with each other, either at FESPA or, shortly after it. At FESPA 2005, there was a manual screenprinting machine with a digital printer attached to it. This enabled it to print on dark garments by shooting a screen of the desired image, printing it as the underlay and then digitally printing on top of it. There was also a lot of talk about several machines being capable of printing on dark garments in 2005, but the prints that were available for viewing were not very good, although they gave some idea of what would be possible in the future. That future is now. The quality of some of the digital prints I have seen on dark garments is fantastic. The big issue is profiling the art so that the finished print looks great. Remember, bad art separated well, will yield a really good print of bad art. Good art that is not optimally profiled and manipulated, will still be good art, but will not look as good as it should.

Other things to look for whilst you are at the show, are some of the faster machines, which, I believe, will eventually be attached to automatic screenprinting machines. If they can be programmed to do things like name drops and other forms of personalisation, then the companies who service these markets may find a less costly method of production. The cost of producing a name drop is quite high and it simply isn’t possible to personalise a single shirt unless you do it digitally. With the newer machines working faster and on a variety of coloured garments and offering the possibility of programming via computers, this is beginning to look a lot more viable. One thing is for sure; FESPA 2007 is well worth a visit!

FESPA WORLD SPRING/07 89

AND FINALLY…

Our resident screenprinting guru Peter Kiddell rounds off this issue with a few tips on what to do and see at FESPA 2007... If you are serious about screenprinting, pad printing and industrial printing, the only place to be between the 5th and the 9th of June is the Messe in Berlin, which is where you’ll find likeminded people, who are at the leading edge of screenprinting technology. And these are no mere squeegee bashers, who struggle to keep the mesh open! Rather, they will help to provide you with a foretaste of how the industry is set to develop over the next five years and probably longer. On show will be a veritable treasure trove of equipment and consumables for graphic, textile and industrial printing, together with the latest developments in computer to screen and digital workflow. Screenprinting has finally come of age, thanks in part, to the challenges posed by digital and litho, which have served to reinvigorate an industry that had started to lose confidence in its own ability and future. This new confidence is amply demonstrated by the introduction of the “Sensations” Special Effects Portfolio, which is being launched by FESPA on its stand. It illustrates the ability of screenprinting to provide an added value premium to every other printing process and will surely become an essential tool for any screenprinter who wishes to increase his product offering and market penetration. For screenprinting to prosper, practitioners really need to know and understand the principles of operation and how to avoid problems. The FESPA e-learning course, which is now available in eight European languages, can also be seen on the FESPA stand. Why not discover for yourself the vast knowledge bank that is 90 FESPA WORLD WINTER/06

available through this unique learning system? It is initiatives such as these, along with seminars, technical back up, the development of standards and its support for national Screenprinting Associations throughout Europe that makes FESPA such a mainstay of the industry. Visit the Stand G320 in Hall 3.1 to find out how much more there is to FESPA than being simply the organiser of first class exhibitions. In all, there will be more than 140 companies representing the screen and pad printing sectors. This is the largest gathering of recent years and thus presents the perfect opportunity for you to examine all of the equipment and consumables, which are crucial to your success. It is easy to think that, nowadays, the internet will provide you with all of the answers, but there is no substitute for actually seeing products in the flesh and being able to compare their relative merits, whilst also discussing your needs with real people. And, by equipping yourself with the latest and most relevant technology, you will be better able to compete effectively with the low wage economies. With screenprinting, the stencil is the foundation of the whole process and, not surprisingly, this is an area where big strides have recently been made with the advent of pre-coated mesh, capillary films that provide an optimum Rz across a range of meshes, meshed frames that combine steel and polyester and other more subtle developments, all of which enable screenprinters to achieve better productivity. Increasingly, printers are using Computer to Screen to improve quality and efficiency

and realise considerable cost savings and, although these systems require a significant initial investment, the pay back can be very swift. Large format photopositives are very costly and high volumes of smaller positives expensive to manage and modify. However, CTS is now available with the ink or wax printed onto a coated mesh or direct exposure with focussed UV light or UV lasers. This equipment has also become part of the digital workflow, which is available to screenprinters. To see CTS in action, visit such exhibitors as SEFAR, KIWO, Lüscher, SignTronic, Proditec and Thieme. Visitors should also look out for screenprinting machines which remember all previous settings and automatically finetune for perfect registration and dryers that provide feedback to the printing machine so that it can adjust to the drying/curing needs of the ink and substrate. Automation, process control, and predictability are all techniques that are essential to success in the process. And don’t just think of screenprinting as a process that requires a flat stencil. Rotary screenprinting can be incorporated inline with flexo, litho, hot foil and finishing and used for applications as diverse as carpet printing and label making. The environmental impact of screenprinting is no longer a theoretical problem and the latest legislation obliges equipment manufacturers to deal with the challenges of screen reclamation, water filtration and discharge into the sewerage systems. Omni-tec and Grünig will both be showing equipment that addresses these issues. Pad Printers have moved on

from simple, hand loaded, single print machines to full blown, multi-station, multiprint manufacturing units which have specially reengineered print heads that can be used to print threedimensional items, converted from plain mouldings or castings to finished products. See also, the computer to plate systems (CTP) that create plates on the machine, using chemical free processes. Common to all of these processes is the ink and you will find all of the major and many of the smaller specialist ink manufacturers at the show, all of whom will be offering their wares. Again, challenged by legislation, they have developed inks that meet the needs of both the application and the regulatory authorities. Seek out the special effect inks shown in the Sensations portfolio all of the manufacturers who provided these will be present at the show. Another must on your show list, are the national pavilions, which will be readily identified by the flags that they are flying. They will provide you with an opportunity to meet suppliers and printers from your own country, as well as those from neighbouring regions. But probably the best part of the FESPA exhibition is the people; artists, engineers, business people, chemists, journalists, printers, salesmen, PR executives, IT specialists, magazine editors et al, all of whom have one thing in common: their passion for and interest in, print. Their presence will also enable you to talk about your favourite topic for hours; sustained, of course by copious amounts of bratwurst and beer! Have a good show!
