Rio de Janeiro’s City Hall, through the Dance Support Fund - FADA 2012 of the City’s Culture Office, once again brings to Rio the largest dance event in Brazil nowadays: Festival Panorama. Celebrating the 21st edition, the Festival presents an intense program of national and international shows and several activities that include residencies, seminars and workshops for professionals and students, a series of works specially aimed at children and audience development initiatives for the general public. Combined with excellence and professionalism acquired over the years, the ample scope offered by the Festival renders makes it a unique moment in the city’s calendar. Recognizing the important role achieved by Festival Panorama, which perfectly complements the growing dance scene in Rio, the City’s Culture Office salutes all participants, guests and the audience for this great celebration of dance in our city.
Festivals are, by nature, unique opportunities for encounter and exchange, among creators, from different backgrounds and lines of works, and between those artists and the audience. Fundamentally relevant in any city’s cultural calendar, these gatherings invariably bring new airs to the local scene and round up audiences, always in a healthy way. By reaching the amazing mark of 21 editions, Festival Panorama only confirms the commitment of its curatorship and a solid trajectory. The most long-lived festival in Brazil dedicated to the arts of the body, dance and performance reaches 2012 taking over Rio de Janeiro, from Zona Sul to Zona Norte, going through Centro. With a program that brings together important international artists and Brazilian companies, in an always surprising composition, Panorama has accomplished another feat: to please very diverse audiences. And more: the Festival has truly contributed to develop new audiences, with a well-established educational project through which members of social projects and students become privileged spectators of an important part of the program, besides having direct contact with the companies. To reach 21, in life and in a festival, means to come of age. The learning process that paves the way is a long one, but the horizon of what remains to be done is even greater. Reinventing models, rethinking ways to act upon the world and finding connections is what makes an encounter such as Festival Panorama necessary, as it has been since 1992. This year, in a social and urban context of extreme changes in Rio de Janeiro, we want to think along two guidelines that seem urgent for art - and life - in Rio. One is the meaning of the word community. The other is how our memory can activate the present. Beyond these outlines, the Festival widens its field of action, incorporating music and audio-visual as growing parts of its landscape. Being together, understanding that the common ground is made of multiplicity. Few artistic areas have been so preoccupied with issues regarding collectivism and decisions made jointly as dance and the arts of the body. This year, in over 12 venues occupied by the Festival from November 2nd to 18th in several neighborhoods, the issue resurfaces in many perspectives. From the micro-community of 100 cariocas with different occupations in Atlas, to the upside-down resistance of 50 cariocas who will spread over Parque Lage for Plantação/Árvores, or the 40 men who will occupy Campo de Santana in Melt Down. The popular circles as society’s engines appear in Cribles, while the collective power is the starting point of De repente tudo fica preto de gente. Many other communities are intertwined in the program. The 50 Latin-American creators in the STILL_MÓVIL exhibition or those who whisper amidst the trees in World of Interiors at Parque Lage, among many others. A second possible path for Panorama 2012 crosses time and memory to discuss what can be documented. The touching installation WE SEE FIREWORKS surrounds us with memories of other scenes and infinite possibilities. histoire(s) makes dramaturgic archeology to revive Roland Petit’s iconic ballet, about which there are no records but the
recollections of those who watched it live. Trajal Harrel mixes the notions of authenticity and the world of pop in a series of studies that create a hypothetical bridge between the voguing scene in Harlem and post-modern dance in New York City in the 60’s and 70’s. From the suburbs of Rio, the emotional and familiar memories of the Portuguese and their folkloric ranches fill the stage of Panorama in A Viagem. The music of an old ballet, conceived for other movements today, irradiates questions in the powerful choreography of A Ballet Story. In a bridge across the Atlantic that started in 2000 between Panorama and the festival then called Danças na Cidade (now called Alkantara), this year, the Portuguese are the highlights, within the Year of Portugal in Brazil ‘s official program. In another bridge over the ocean, connecting Panorama and the British experimental scene since 2002, a selection of artists based in the United Kingdom lands in Rio with the project Transform. For the third time, Panorama occupies the border between the arts of the body and the visual arts; spreading over the beautiful Escola de Artes Visuais do Parque Lage, this time, with the premiere of four pieces co-produced by the Festival with the support of Funarte and Funarj - Rio de Janeiro Culture Office. In a year of clear expansion of boundaries, Panorama asserts itself as the largest contemporary art festival in the city and welcomes within the program its loud and innovative cousin, the HAPPENINGS, curated by Batman Zavareze. Sound installations, musical performances and many surprises occupy Centro Municipal de Arte Hélio Oiticica. Panorama reaches 2012 as world-renowned international festival, with Rio de Janeiro as backdrop and inspiration. A great interdisciplinary journey that lasts 17 days for the audience and 12 months of bridges and stitches between artists, public administrators, sponsors and a huge crew and network of partners who are our daily and closest community. A viagem reveals how Portuguese cultural expressions emerge in modern times, giving rise to new meanings. The work is an interpretation of everyday history and the influence of Portuguese dance and Portuguese music in Brazilian culture, based on Felipa’s residency with her collaborators from Rancho Folclórico Casa de Viseu in the suburbs of Rio de Janeiro. A viagem had its worldwide premiere at Guimarães 2012 – Capital Europeia da Cultura/Fundação Cidade Guimarães and has toured in many countries. Filipa Francisco is part of Portuguese cultural association Materiais Diversos and has studied at the Escola Superior de Dança, the Trisha Brown Dance Company and the Lee Strasberg Institute. Since 2000, she has been creating choreographies that were staged in several countries. She coordinated the dance training and creation project NU KRE BAI BU ONDA, in Lisbon, between 2007-2008. In 2005-2006, she was part of Encontros, an innovative collaborative project linking Portuguese dance and performance, presented by Panorama and alkantara festival.

A ballet story is based on David Chesky’s ballet Zephyrtin. However, it is neither a theatrical representation nor an illustration of the original story, but rather an experiment on abstraction following movements of the bodies in space, in connection with the music. Whether the story is adjusted to the music or the dance is adjusted to the story is never clear. The construction of the narrative is up to each spectator. Since 2009, Victor Hugo Pontes has been the Director of Associação Nome Próprio, in Porto. With a degree in visual arts and painting from Faculdade de Belas Artes da Universidade do Porto, he works as an actor, set designer, choreographer, performer and teacher in countries such as Austria, Belgium, Spain, France, Italy, Russia and Brazil.

World of interiors is a performance/installation that confronts the audience with a disturbing image: people lying on the ground, with eyes closed, supposedly motionless. The audience may go in and out of the performance whenever they like and must approach the performers to share their inner world and hear them whisper the text written by dramatist Rodrigo Garcia. Ana Borralho and João Galante are actors, performers and cocreators. They have been working together since 2002, developing projects that revolve around choreographic installation and theater, as well as other formats. The pair created the non-musicians band Jimmie Durham and Associação casaBranca. In 2005-2006, they were part of Encontros, an innovative collaborative project linking Portuguese dance and performance, presented by Panorama and alkantara festival.

Atlas is the result of Ana Borralho and João Galante’s residency in Rio de Janeiro. The piece brings together a hundred people with different occupations who meet on stage to give life to the performance. Each one states their occupation and reveals the job they are doing at the moment. Atlas is a protest, a party, an employment line, a social portrait of the residents of a mutating city. In each city the show is presented, submissions are opened to select people/performers among the local communities for the Atlas performance. In the case of Rio de Janeiro, the call-for-entries searched for 100 people/performers with or without performing experience. The process took place through Festival Panorama’s website and social networks. Any profession/occupation in society was accepted: the unemployed, prostitutes, housewives, pensioners, students, fortune-tellers, politicians, etc.

It starts with minimal movements: twitching fingers and slowly circling shoulders. With the musician Brendan Dougherty’s surging feedback loops, the movements expand like a wave, creating a whirlwind of energetic patterns. The piece marks the return of American choreographer Meg Stuart to movement research as a primary motor of creation. Meg Stuart is one of the most important dance artists of the 20th century. She created Damaged Goods, with which she created more than 20 works, among solos and large-scale choreographies. Her work travelled throughout the world, but has never been presented in Rio de Janeiro, where the artist has carried out workshops and residencies. She received several awards, such as the Bessie Award and the Flemish Culture Prize.

Two bodies manipulate and adjust themselves. As they look at each other in the right direction, they become fascinated by their vulnerabilities. What started with physical interaction and intense movements subtly turns into a mysterious and fascinating video installation. This work renews the choreographic partnership between Meg Stuart and Philipp Gehmacher that started with the worldwide success Maybe Forever and marks the arrival of visual artist Vladimir Miller in the creative process. Philipp Gehmacher received the Bonnie Bird New Choreography Award, in 2000, and the prestigious Jerwood Choreography Award two years later. He was the first dance artist to be awarded by the Austrian Federal Ministry for Education, Arts and Culture, in 2009. In the following year, he premiered In Their Name at Festival Steirischer Herbst. Vladimir Miller lives between Berlin and Vienna, researching space, relationships and perception in visual arts. He created the video installations Dead Reckoning (2009) and At Arm’s Length (2010) with Philipp Gehmacher.

De repente fica tudo preto de gente is a dialogue between Brazilian choreographer Marcelo Evelin, five performers and the audience. Based on the ideas about crowds developed by writer Elias Canetti in the book Crowds and Power, the metaphor of multitudes as a place for individual freedom emerges as the different parts of the piece come together. “The crowd, suddenly there where there was nothing before, is a mysterious and universal phenomenon. A few people may have been standing together – five, ten or twelve, not more; nothing has been announced, nothing is expected. Suddenly everywhere is black with people”, writes Canneti. Marcelo Evelin is a choreographer, researcher and performer. He lives in Europe since 1986, where he works on dance and physical theatre with professionals from different countries, backgrounds and art forms (music, video installation and performance). In 2006, he created Núcleo do Dirceu, in Teresina, Piauí, and has coordinated the group since then.

histoire(s) premiered in 2004 at KunstenFestivaldesArts, in Brussels, as a tribute to Roland Petit’s ballet Le jeune homme et la mort. In order to create the piece, Olga de Soto turned to the memory of spectators who watched the 1946 original staging at Théâtre des ChampsElysées, in Paris. With the forgotten emotions that emerged during the interviews, she defined the essential elements of the performance. Olga de Soto is a dancer and researcher. She lives and works between Brussels and Madrid. She made her debut as a choreographer with Patios, in 1992, at Festival Bellone-Brigittines, in Brussels. Since then, she has been researching issues of perception and transmission and creating works by herself and in collaboration with other artists.

(XS) and (S) are three of the five models in the series Twenty Looks or Paris Is Burning at the Judson Church, which provokes the audience with the following question: what would have happened in 1963 if someone from the voguing ball scene in Harlem had come downtown to perform alongside the early postmoderns at Judson Church? (XS) is a 25-minute solo made for an audience of up to 25 people. An intimate revealing piece dealing with an artist and his background. The audience becomes witness to a small performing gem. (S) is a manifesto about the codes of movements that shape the pop universe. The solo reveals a critical observation of the aesthetics of postmodern dance since the Judson Church era, incorporating the voguing scene and discussing concepts of authenticity and naturalness. Trajal Harell is a dancer and choreographer born in Georgia, but his career and New York City are inseparable. He was a resident artist at The White Oak Residency and Dance Center, Snug Harbor Cultural Center, Movement Research, Bennington College, CDC Toulouse, ICA Boston, PACT Zollverein and Workspace Brussels.

(M)imosa is a choreographic collaboration between Trajal Harrell, Cecilia Bengolea, François Chaignaud and Marlene Monteiro Freitas. The average format of the series is undefined, something along the lines of choreography, karaoke and a game of masks. Inspired by Paris Is Burning, a documentary about voguing, and by creative collaboration, the co-creators experience and share the distance between them and their sources of inspiration. Cecilia Bengolea studied Art History in Buenos Aires. In 2004, she attended Exerce, Mathilde Monnier’s research program, in Montpellier. Along with François Chaignaud, she created Paquerette (2005-08), Sylphides (2009), Castor & Pollux and Free Dance (2010). François Chaignaud attended the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse (CNSM), in Paris. Since his graduation as a dancer in 2002, he has worked with choreographers Boris Chamartz, Emmanuelle Huynh, Gilles Jobin, Tiago Guedes and Alain Buffard. As a history researcher, he published L’affaire Berger-Levrault – Les féminismes à l’épreuve (2009), a book about feminism in France. Marlene Monteiro Freitas co-founded the dance group Compass, in Cape Verde. She created solos and pieces, such as Uns e outros (2008), A seriedade do animal (2009-10) and Guintche (2010). She’s a member of the collective Bomba Suicida, based in Lisbon, and regularly works with Emmanuelle Huynh, Loic Touzé, Tânia Carvalho and Boris Charmatz.

Do we see music or hear dance? Cribles/Live is an invitation to look at the circle, a simple ritualistic formation, and realize how it sparks our memories. The ancient children’s dance form is a vehicle for celebration, wedding and war dances, marches, movements in unison. The work is about creating a shared ritual. Brazilian musicians play the musical score created by Iannis Xenakis at the same time they circle around the stage, surrounding the dancers and the audience. Emanuelle Huynh is one of the most important names in French dance. Since 2004, she directs the Centre National de Danse Contemporaine (CNDC), in Angers. In 2009, with the creation of Cribles, she started to research a new relationship between music and the creative process of choreography.

Múa plays with darkness/light, silence/music, dance/stillness. The piece was created after three powerful experiences Emmanuelle Huynh went trough. The first was being immersed in complete darkness, as proposed by Michel Reilhac in Dark noir, at vidéothèque de Paris, allowing her to sharpen her other senses. The second was improvising performances with eyes closed. The third was to make a residency in Vietnam, her parents’ birthplace. Múa is about moving inside oneself and out into the world.

Maneries deal with the body as linguistic material. Using iconic, motivated and arbitrary symbols, the performer creates a series of challenges to test his limits, his actual ability. A journey marked by the experience of time and by experiences that bestow upon the body the role of producer and receiver of potential meanings. Since 1999, Luis Garay and Cia de Buenos have developed a thorough formal work about the body, in which they question forms of scenic representation. Among other pieces, Garay developed Hay en mi formas extrañas, Maya, Ouroboro and The Divine Comedy.

This is concrete slowly shows two male bodies interacting, while testing their limits. Amidst shadows and stunning sound beats, they have a sedative sexual experience. Speaking becomes eating, having sex becomes dancing and symbiosis becomes parasitism. The piece is a Festival Panorama co-production, with the support of Dutch platform Central de Cultura. Jefta van Dinther lives and works between Amsterdam, Stockholm and Berlin. His works include IT’S IN THE AIR, a partnership with Mette Ingvartsen, and The Way Things Go (2009); Kneeding (2010); GRIND (2011), in collaboration with designers Minna Tiikkainen (light) and David Kiers (sound); The Blanket Dance (2011), in collaboration with Frederic Gies and DD Dorvillier. Thiago Granato lives between Brazil, France and Germany. He worked as a performer and a choreographer with Lia Rodrigues, Adriana Grechi, João Saldanha, Cristina Moura, Mathilde Monnier, Cecilia Bengolea and François Chaignaud. Superpowers, challenges, attack, defense and meditation; Eastern philosophy and guerrilla. These are the elements that set the mood for the latest research of Cia R.E.C, Katana, which deals with the universe of their heroes. Their references include both a fictitious world anime, comics and games - and a real one, with the real life characters that inspire the group. Imagination is on the loose: Ninjas, samurai, Brazilian rappers MV Bill and Emicida and each one of us. Nothing could be more human. Cia R.E.C. – Reação em Cadeia was created two years ago. Solo(s) deals with two possibilities for the word “solo” in Portuguese. As a noun, it means ground, referring to space. As an adjective, it carries the idea of being unaccompanied, lonely. The piece is a choreographic installation created by Izabel Stewart and Tana Guimarães, two independent artists who decided to work in partnership. Izabel Stewart started her career in Rio de Janeiro during the 90’s. She currently lives in Belo Horizonte, where she works with independent artists such as Dudude Herrmann, Marcelo Kraiser and Paola Rettore. Tana Guimarães is a dancer and visual artist. She participated in the following works of Cia Suspensa: Pouco acima, Alpendre and De peixes e pássaros, and in the researches (both awarded by Rumos Itaú Cultural), Objeto de voo and Sem os pés no chão.

contact Gonzo is a company from Osaka, Japan, that combines contact improvisation references with Hunter S. Thompson’s gonzo aesthetics. They disperse and occupy public buildings, theaters, museums and alleys around the world, with performances that may seem either an exchange of slaps or a sophisticated dance. Besides being a company directed by Yukako Ogura, contact GONZO is also a method developed and named by dancers Yu Kakio and Yuya Tsukahara in 2006. Besides urban interventions, they also work on installations, videos and photography. In 2009, they received the Yoshihara Jiro Memorial Visual Arts prize and in 2011, they travelled the world with performances in Slovenia, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Hungary, among other countries.

Tadasu Takamine investigates differences between Brazilian and Japanese culture in Japan syndrome step 2 – Inside the ball, a work based on a video installation created in 2011, during a residency in Brazil. Tadasu Takamine developed the scenic phase of this research in another residency, this time in Kyoto, Japan, along with Brazilian artists Georgia Conceição and Layane de Hollanda. Tadasu Takamine works between performance and video installation. He became known for dealing with controversial issues, such as American colonialism, sexuality, foreigners living in Japan and immigrant workers. His work addresses through the body ideas about nationality, gender and language.

“You dance inside my chest where no one sees you, but sometimes I do, and this sight makes our dance.” In Robert and Maria, Maria Hassabi asks her partner, dramatist Robert Steijn, to look into her eyes. This simple and powerful action keeps them connected. The close attention to each glimpse, sigh and movement creates a hypnotic reality and reveals psychological stages and sculptural entities. Robert and Maria premiered in 2010 at the Danspace Project, in New York, within the I Get Lost platform, curated by Ralph Lemon. Maria Hassabi lives in New York, where she works as a choreographer and performer. In 2011, she created Show, as a development of the works SoloShow and Solo, both from 2009. Robert Steijn uses silence as a tool to communicate with the audience. He teaches at the School for New Dance Development, in Amsterdam, and at P.A.R.T.S., in Brussels. In collaboration with several artist collectives, he writes and directs plays.

Carta de amor ao inimigo is a result of collective situations involving dancers, choreographic devices and vectors that move the body. Being someone else and being many to escape the withdrawal that unveils encounters and accepts failure. Adapting oneself is a force of beauty, a remote deliberation from acknowledgment to the unexpected. Cena 11, one of the most important Brazilian dance companies, is directed by Alejandro Ahmed and based in Florianópolis (SC). Its recent production includes works in different formats, such as Pequenas frestas de ficção sobre realidade insistente (2007), Embodied Voodoo Game (2010), and Guia de Idéias Correlatas (2011), an ensemble of scenes from previous works. Melt down is a simple and powerful manifestation. The performers walk on stage and take their places at one ring of a large bell. They stretch their arms above their heads as they look up to the sky. Each of the following ten minutes is marked by a ring of the bell. The performers slowly and subtly “melt” to the ground. The piece is one of four performances that compose Square Dances, co-commissioned by Dance Umbrella in association with Artsadmin, in 2011. This version of “Melt Down” was developed in partnership with local performers. Rosemary Lee is a performer, choreographer and director. She has investigated humanity in live performances and films for 25 years. Her latest pieces Square Dances (2011) and Common Dance (2009), were staged at Dance Umbrella, in London. She performed Remote Dancing in galleries and public spaces between 2004 and 2008.

The sky is an infinite space encompassing everything. It puts nothing ahead, no moment, nothing that exists. An attitude regarding the body is turned into dance: making the body permissive; changing positions gracefully. Before we start, I have a request: spectator, allow me to see you, allow me to tell you that one day I had all the ideas. Volmir Cordeiro has a degree in theater from the Rio de Janeiro State University and is a master’s candidate in dance, creation and performance at Centre National de Danse Contemporaine d’Angers, directed by choreographer Emmanuelle Huynh.

Dance is not about movement, but also about marking and posture that reshape and transform the body. The break dance vocabulary is broken down, revealing internal dynamics through posture repetitions in several points in space, as in a paint stroke. Selim Ben Safia was born in France and moved to Tunisia at age three. He has been dedicated to street dancing since childhood. As a contemporary creator immersed in the fusion of movement forms, he created the company Underground Skills in 2011, whose first piece was the solo Je ne me reconnais plus.

The proposal is to create a shifting floor that constantly transforms itself. By doing so, the piece evokes notions of relationships and changes. Big Bang Boom is an unstable topology composed by a series of juxtaposed, portable, disposable landscapes that makes us reflect about the limits and frameworks of time and space, inside and outside, up and down, empty and full. Part of the creative process took place at Essais, Centre National de Danse Contemporaine d’Angers/France. Michelle Moura is a performer and choreographer. She co-founded Couve-Flor Minicomunidade Artística Mundial, in Curitiba. As a performer, she has collaborated with Alex Cassal and Dani Lima (Brazil), Fabian Gandini (Argentina) and Vincent Dupont (France). Cena familiar involves video installation and performance. The video projection of a scene about itself takes place when 15 people pose for a traditional family portrait. The motionless performers serve as background for the projections that fit into their bodies and overflow into the surrounding space. The work speculates about body and image, virtual action and real space, raising a question about the boundaries between artistic languages. Celina Portella was a resident at Centre International d’Accueil et d’Échanges des Récollets (Paris, 2009), Labmis (MIS – São Paulo, 2009), Galeria Kiosko (Bolivia, 2009) and Crac Valparaíso (Chile, 2008). She received a grant from EAV Parque Lage’s Núcleo de Arte e Tecnologia (Rio de Janeiro, 2009) and was awarded in the II Concurso de Videoarte da Fundação Joaquim Nabuco (Fundaj – Recife, 2008). She participated in the showcases Nova Arte Nova, at CCBB (Rio de Janeiro e São Paulo, 2009) and 60º Salão de Abril (Fortaleza, 2009), among other. As a dancer and co-creator, she has worked with choreographers Lia Rodrigues and João Saldanha.

Desiring permanence, reversing space, questioning time. What can the body withstand? People dressed in the same costume occupy spaces in the urban landscape, going against the flow of movement, upside down, until their bodies can’t handle it anymore. Plantação/Árvores questions the possible ways for the body to resist, to keep going, to maintain its potency. Clarice Lima has worked with choreographers Jan Fabre, David Zambrano (50 days), Constanza Macras, Jorge Garcia, Cristian Duarte and Thelma Bonavita, among others. Portuguese singer and composer Lula Pena has one of the most acclaimed voices in Portugal. Her music ignores the boundaries of so-called new fado, crosses the world and mingles traditional metrics with breathtaking interpretations. Her delicate performance closes the first weekend of Festival Panorama at Parque Lage and reinforces the bridge across the Atlantic created by the Year of Portugal in Brazil. “A Portuguese singer with a deep voice and an amplified guitar that sings just like a poet”, as Brazilian musician Caetano Veloso described her.

Incorpóreo relates photography to moving bodies. The research started in London during the artistic residency Rio Occupation London and presents a series of small actions in which the body of the artist makes different movements in front of a photo camera. At the moment a body moves in search of new sensations, only the memory of what happened remains. The project was inspired by pioneers of photography and moving images, such as Eadweard Muybridge, Étienne-Jules Marey and Anton Giulio Bragaglia. João Penoni is a visual artist, designer, photographer and acrobat. He was part of group exhibitions such as From the Margin to the Edge, at Somerset House (London, 2012); Quase casais, at Espaço Maus Hábitos (Lisbon, 2011); Zonas de contato, at Paço das Artes (São Paulo, Brazil, 2011); I Mostra Videurbe (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, 2011).

This year, Panorama receives as an associated project its loud and unexpected cousin, HAPPENINGS, in a partnership that extends to Multiplicidade and is curated by Batman Zavareze. The attractions stir up Centro Municipal de Arte Hélio Oiticica (CAHO) and the surroundings of Praça Tiradentes, in Centro, with several collective actions that jumble the senses: exhibitions, performances and DJing. A new installation of musical group from Minas Gerais, O Grivo, is the centerline at CAHO, along with the installation of Helen Cole, from England, from November 9th to 18th. On the 15th, 16th and 17th, there will be a music program with national and international artists. On the year of the centennial of avant-garde musician John Cage, they recite the mantra: “This isn’t art, it’s noise.” L

We see fireworks is a visual and sound installation composed by the recollections of those who have seen it. A constantly evolving archive of voices fills a room illuminated by blinking lights that evoke memories of performances or everyday events. The whispers of up to 300 individuals tell stories of family secrets, epic productions, unusual theatrical encounters and lost love. The work is based on the premise that theater is something essentially viral that takes place everywhere, lying dormant, until the memories are sharpened. Helen Cole is the artistic director of In Between Time. For two decades, she has been a curator, producer and works with live art, contemporary performance and interdisciplinary practices. Alex Bradley is one of the most acclaimed sound artists in the United Kingdom.

The highly visual Têtes-à-têtes combines dance, movement, video, sound and lights. Aimed at children over three years old, it’s based on the interaction between a strange lonely character and projections of animations specially created for the piece. Travelling through space and different situations, ranging from poetry to comedy, life and fantasy, the character is lead to discover his own body, space, colors and others. Maria Clara Villa Lobos studied classic and contemporary ballet. After her training at P.A.R.T.S., in Brussels, she worked with several choreographers and developed her own pieces, including Crash (1997), Lar doce lar (1998), M, uma peça mediana (2003) and Head On (2010). The artist teaches at Dancing Kids, a dance school for children created by Anne Teresa de Keersmaeker.

Menu de heróis is an invitation to be whomever one wants to be, based on what’s around. There are no bad guys, no good guys or even a city. There is only the present and a place where things are invented and everything is mixed. Styrofoam and Football boot, bottle and balloon, glove and cardboard boxes, reality and fiction. What is reality, after all? Is it where everything exists? Created in 2006, Núcleo do Dirceu works with several performing arts languages. It received the Public Policy for Dance (2008) and the Education, Diffusion, Production and Creation in Dance (2011) awards from the São Paulo Association of Art Critics Awards. Since 2009, the group occupies Galpão do Dirceu, where they develop projects in local, national and international partnerships.

The itinerant and interdisciplinary nature of the STILL_MÓVIL project, an initiative of Red Sudamericana de Danza and London-based Italian artist Manuel Vason, essentially brings together two languages that constantly interact: photography and dance. With the goal of transforming a dance piece - a live work of art - into stillness and image, Manuel Vason travelled, between 2010 e 2011, through ten different South American countries, documenting the work of fifty creators, choreographers and dancers in collaborative residencies. The result is an unsettling creative material that consists of a itinerant exhibition, a book that will gather photo essays and a website with the documentation of the collaborative process.

Manuel Vason’s artistic practice explores the relationship between photography and performance, presence and representation. He considers the capturing of a moment as an act of creation, as an exchange between who is in front and behind the camera, as a ritual towards the illusion of immortality. The collaborative nature of his practice shapes a unique hybrid art form and forms new vocabularies. His collaborations to date have become some of the most iconic images of performance and his work has been published and presented internationally. RSD is an initiative for integration and collaboration among different world-renowned actors of dance and culture belonging to South American countries. By favoring trainings, mobility and associative work spaces, Red links innovative forms of social organization to artistic development, besides supporting dance practices that research, in a broader context, new meanings in culture.

Corpo-Cópia: Library of performing rights is a collaboration between Videoteca Panorama (Brazil) and Live Art Develoment Agency / LADA (UK), produced and curated by Eduardo Bonito and Paula Gorini (Brazil) and Andrew Mitchelson (UK). The first edition of Corpo-Cópia took place in 2011, during the Political Compositions program. The Library of Performing Rights project in Rio includes a film showcase with works related to human rights themes and four roundtables with specialists and artists, based on the following guidelines: Corpo Santo, Corpo-diverso, Corpo-manifesto, Corpoidentidade and Corpo-ativismo. We are also going to have a premiere of the film “Corpo Santo”, a video documentation of the artistic project developed at IPUB, UFRJ’s Institute of Psychiatry, with visual artists Maurício Dias & Walter Riedweg. Ponto de Cultura Espaço Panorama has been connecting and strengthening the ongoing actions of Associação Cultural Panorama (ACPAN) in the city of Rio de Janeiro and surrounding areas for two years. Espaço Panorama is a Ponto de Cultura based on performing arts production, development and creation, increasing each year the reach of this art language in the educational and aesthetic fields, in several places around the state. In 2012, Ponto de Cultura produced, among other things, a vacation camp in partnership with Ponto de Cultura Ciranda de Tarituba, in Paraty, and video screenings and dance workshops in several Olympic Villages in the city of Rio de Janeiro. Another important action is being developed with patients of UFRJ’s Psychiatric Hospital (IPUB), which includes dance workshops with invited artists. The users of IPUB will have an open rehearsal for the Corpo Desperto performance-installation on November 14th, at 10h, directed by Bernado Zabalaga and Bruna Savaget, at the yard of IPUB (Av. Venceslau Brás, 71 Fundos, Urca). Like every year, Panorama occupies one space of the city with several parallel activities and turns it into an alternative bar and theater, where hundreds of artists and cariocas spend time the afternoons with conversations and performances and have evenings of good music, tasty food, nice drinks and many encounters. This year, we found Largo das Artes, one of the most beautiful contemporary arts gallery in the city, two steps away from Praça Tiradentes and the Festival’s largest theaters. Shows, debates and book launchings occupy the late afternoons, where the Panorama Aumentado team make interviews and prepare the real time coverage of the festival.

A dance-tech.tv Augmented Reality Experience Lab @ FestivalPanorama 2012*
How does Panorama Aumentado work? (You must be connected to the internet.) 1. Download and install the Aurasma Lite app from the Apple store and subscribe to Dance-tech.tv channel (iPhones e iPads) or the dancetechtvARapp from Google Market (Android devices). Both are free of charge. 2. Run the app in your device and hover it slowly over the festival program images or installation images to see how they become alive with video images. The scanned surface needs to be lit evenly with no shadows.

The installation/lab explores the intersection of online video journalism and Augmented Reality technology, creating a mobile media experience during the festival. The audience uses smart phones or tablets to scan programs and posters of the festival to discover video layers with performance excepts, artists interviews and other contents created by a team of students. The lab films and edits in real time what happens at the theaters and other venues and its headquarters are the Center of the Festival. Panorama Aumentado creates a hidden media landscape that grows as the festival happens. Panorama Aumentado was conceived by Marlon Barrios Solano as a collaboration between dance-tech.tv and Festival Panorama 2012. Thanks to ACCAD - The Advanced Computer Center for Arts and Design from the Ohio State University (USA) and DanceDigitalUK. The dancetechtvARapp is powered by Aurasma (UK)
