good Grief Starring

Penelope Keith

Mon 1 to Sat 6 October 2012 Adapted by Keith Waterhouse from his own best-selling comic novel, Good Grief tells the story of June Pepper, the recently bereaved widow of the editor of a tabloid newspaper who discovers there is far more to life than death. Following her late husband’s instructions to keep a journal of her feelings, June finds that grieving is not the straightforward process she had imagined, especially when she finds herself surprisingly drawn to a stranger she sees wearing her husband’s suit! Featuring the sparkling combination of wry humour and poignancy which characterised Keith Waterhouse’s extensive writing (his work for the stage includes Billy Liar, Our Song, Mr and Mrs Nobody and Jeffrey Bernard Is Unwell), Good Grief stars Penelope Keith, one of Britain’s best-loved actresses, known to millions for her television roles in The Good Life and To the Manor Born.

Haunting Julia By

Alan Ayckbourn

Tue 9 to Sat 13 October 2012 Duncan Preston, Richard O’Callaghan and Joe McFadden star in the first ever UK tour of the critically acclaimed London production of Alan Ayckbourn’s haunting study of grief, obsession and the supernatural. This is Alan Ayckbourn as you’ve never seen him before. The wit and masterful insight are all there, but this time in a chilling, thrilling ghost story that will have you jumping out of your seat. Julia Lukin was a musical prodigy. At 8 years old she was writing symphonies, by the age of 19 the world was at her feet. She had everything, but then her body was discovered in a pool of blood in a dingy attic. Twelve years have passed and her father Joe (Duncan Preston) has never stopped asking “why?” Was it really suicide? Or was someone else with her on that fateful night? Joe wants answers – and tonight he shall have them. www.hauntingjulia.com

The Cone Gatherers Tue 23 to Sat 27 October 2012 The Cone Gatherers is a haunting tale of good versus evil, demonstrating the destructive power of envy and prejudice. Based on Robin Jenkins’ classic Scottish novel, the story centres around two brothers gathering cones in a forest on a Scottish estate in order to replenish the trees felled for the war effort. Neil and his hunchbacked brother Calum lead happy and contented lives in these beautiful surroundings, completely detached from the destruction of the Second World War. However, their innocence and happiness is threatened by the dark, obsessive hatred of Duror the gamekeeper and the deep prejudices of the class system of the time. The obsessions of Duror grow stronger throughout the story, building to a devastating climax. Robin Jenkins’ greatest novel is brought to life by the creative team behind His Majesty’s Theatre’s two critically acclaimed productions, Sunset Song and The Silver Darlings, in a brand new adaptation by Scottish dramatist Peter Arnott.

The Mousetrap By

Agatha Christie

Mon 29 October to Sat 3 November 2012 A classic. A landmark. A legend. The Mousetrap is famous around the world as being the longest-running show of any kind in the history of British theatre - with almost 25,000 performances, it’s a play to be proud of. And to celebrate sixty incredible years on stage, it’s going on tour for the first time, with a star cast, giving you a once in a lifetime opportunity to see this masterpiece here in Edinburgh. The scene is set when a group of people gathered in a country house, cut off by the snow, discover to their horror that there is a murderer in their midst. Who can it be? One by one the suspicious characters reveal their sordid pasts until at the last, nerve-shredding moment the identity and the motive of the murderer are finally revealed. In her own inimitable style, Dame Agatha Christie has created an atmosphere of shuddering suspense and a brilliantly intricate plot where murder lurks around every corner.

The Ladykillers

Direct from the West End Mon 5 to Sat 10 November 2012

From the writer of Father Ted, Graham Linehan, comes a hilarious and thrilling new adaptation directed by Sean Foley (The Play What I Wrote). Starring Michele Dotrice (Some Mothers Do ‘Ave ‘Em), Shaun Williamson (Extras, EastEnders) and Clive Mantle (Casualty, The Vicar of Dibley). The Ladykillers is a classic black comedy; a sweet little old lady, alone in her house, is pitted against a gang of criminal misfits who will stop at nothing… Posing as amateur musicians, Professor Marcus and his gang rent rooms in the lopsided house of sweet but strict Mrs Wilberforce. The villains plot to involve her unwittingly in Marcus’ brilliantly conceived heist job. The police are left stumped, but Mrs Wilberforce becomes wise to their ruse and Marcus concludes that there is only one way to keep the old lady quiet. With only her parrot, General Gordon, to help her, Mrs W. is alone with five desperate men. But who will be forced to face the music? www.theladykillers.co.uk

Some Like It Hip Hop

A ZooNation and Sadler’s Wells Co-production Tue 6 & Wed 7 November 2012

Some Like It Hip Hop was one of the most successful new shows to hit the West End last year, wowing audiences and prompting widespread critical praise with its infectious “wit, heart and magnificent energy” (The Independent). Following in the footsteps of ZooNation’s phenomenal 2006 smash hit Into the Hoods, Some Like It Hip Hop unites sensational dancing with a clever and engrossing storyline. With a nod to Billy Wilder’s film and Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night, it tells a comical tale of love, mistaken identity, cross-dressing and revolution; all played out in ZooNation’s trademark style of hip hop dance, comedy and physical theatre. www.slihh.zoonation.co.uk

Matthew Bourne’s

Sleeping Beauty

Music by Tchaikovsky

Tue 27 November to Sat 1 December 2012 New Adventures’ 25th birthday culminates with the world premiere of Matthew Bourne’s latest re-imagining of a ballet classic. Sleeping Beauty sees Bourne return to the music of Tchaikovsky to complete the trio of ballet masterworks that started with Nutcracker! and the international smash hit, Swan Lake. This timeless fairy tale about a young girl cursed to sleep for 100 years was first turned into a legendary ballet in 1890. We meet our heroine, Aurora, at her Christening, before the story moves forward a century to the modern day. Featuring designs by Olivier Award-winners Lez Brotherston (Set and Costumes), Paule Constable (Lighting) with sound design by Paul Groothuis, which will take the audience into the heart of Tchaikovsky’s magnificent score in specially recorded surround sound. www.new-adventures.net

TRUSTS & FOUNDATIONS The Binks Trust have supported the creation of a new studio at the back of the Festival Theatre which will be used for rehearsals, small performances and learning and participation activities. The Nancie Massey Charitable Trust have provided funding to improve disabled access at the King’s Theatre. The Prince’s Foundation for Children & the Arts have funded dance opportunities for 600 children and young people over the next three years. In year one the schools we are working with are Broughton High School and The Royal High School, Clermiston and Granton Primary Schools. Children and young people from the schools will see two dance productions between October 2012 and January 2013 and experience six dance workshops in their schools culminating in a shared performance of work in January 2013. The Cruden Foundation, The D’Oyly Carte Charitable Trust and the JTH Charitable Trust have supported our programme of access performances for audience members with sensory impairments.

Dedicate a seat in your King’s Theatre Here?

PLEASE TAKE A SEAT Here? Here? Or maybe here?

our panto stars have their seats, why not choose yours? If you would like to discuss seat dedications further, or would like to find out which seats are still available, please contact: Lucy Clement on 0131 622 8087 lucy.clement@edtheatres.com

Now is your chance to make your mark on a piece of Edinburgh’s history where the likes of Sir Ian McKellen, Maria Callas, Sir Sean Connery and even Led Zeppelin have performed. Following restoration work the King’s now has brand new plush seating in the Stalls and Dress Circle in keeping with the theatre’s beautiful auditorium. For a donation of £300 (or £500 for a pair of seats) you can dedicate one of the new seats with a personal message on an inscribed plaque. Remember a loved one, mark an anniversary, promote your business or give the perfect gift for a theatre lover. Because it’s more than just a seat…
