Welcome... I’m delighted to announce that the City of Edinburgh Council will start work in the Spring of 2012 on a £2.6m project to upgrade the King’s. This will see new seating in the Stalls and Dress Circle, improved ventilation and the creation of a new, accessible Box Office area. Meanwhile, in a separate development, the Festival Theatre is finally to get the rehearsal facilities that its local, national and international visiting companies have been so lacking over the last two decades. Work will start this year on the construction of the rehearsal rooms, incorporating a small performance space and education facilities, at the rear of the Festival Theatre. In the meantime, we hope that you enjoy another packed season at the Festival and King’s Theatres. Our aim is to provide fuel for the soul and we hope you will support us in helping to keep arts and culture centre stage in Edinburgh. Make sure you join our Friends scheme and enjoy great savings on some great shows – that way we can help your money go further too!

Scottish Ballet and the creative team behind Cinderella and The Nutcracker present Alice, an extraordinary adventure into the depths of the imagination. ”Big voice, big production, big numbers“ Daily Express ANTHEMS: The Tour is the live version of Anthems, Kerry Ellis’ stunning hit debut album produced by and co-starring Queen legend Brian May.
The Naked Truth is the comedy play from Dave Simpson, the writer of the smash-hit comedy Girls Night Out (seen here last year), starring Maureen Nolan, Nikki Sanderson (Coronation Street) Sarah White (Brookside) and Leanne Jones (Olivier Award winning star of Hairspray).
Brian May says: “Kerry Ellis is now acknowledged as a phenomenon, equally at home in Musical Theatre and Rock. I was convinced from the moment we worked together on We Will Rock You nine years ago, that she was destined to be a worldwide star. The challenge was to develop songs and arrangements to allow that amazing voice to reach its true potential.”
Set in a pole dancing class, The Naked Truth is a comedy about sisterhood. Five very different women struggle to conquer pole dancing for an event to raise awareness and money for a breast cancer charity, sharing laughter and tears as their stories unfold,
This unique show performed by Kerry, Brian and their band features both rock and musical theatre anthems including songs from WICKED, CHESS and WE WILL ROCK YOU.
The Naked Truth celebrates strength through adversity. This is a show for women, about women, that men absolutely must see (if they dare).
”This debut album is a real showstopper – a fusion of rock meets musical“ Woman (Magazine)

Verdi’s towering opera tells a tragic tale. Rigoletto, a jester employed by a rich and dissolute Duke, is forced to keep his master well supplied with fresh conquests. As a web of court intrigue tightens around him, Rigoletto finds himself the victim of a grave curse, but to his horror, it is his carefully protected daughter Gilda who is the one to suffer.

From the aching naivety of Gilda’s first love, to the Duke’s unthinking revelry and Rigoletto’s tortured realisation of his failure as a father, Verdi takes the characters from elation to
Director Matthew Richardson brings this operatic classic to the stage in a stylish and theatrical production. English baritone Eddie Wade sings Rigoletto, in his debut in the role, and Edgaras Montvidas (Nemorino in 2009’s The Elixir of Love) is the Duke. Nadine Livingston (Musetta in 2010’s La bohème) brings a fresh innocence to the role of Gilda. Tobias Ringborg conducts.

Lee Nelson’s WELL NEW TOUR
www.festivaltheatre.org.uk
ALSTON This triple bill includes a revival of Richard Alston’s iconic Roughcut, made in 1990 and probably his best-loved signature piece. This is a rare chance to see one of the defining classics of British dance. Roughcut was made to celebrate the exuberance of the dancers with whom Alston was working at the time – it’s a euphoric display of pure energy. Alston’s 2011 company of dancers has the same sort of energy, encouraging Alston to revive the piece for the first time in ten years. It is danced to Steve Reich’s shimmeringly beautiful New York and Electric Counterpoints for clarinet and guitar.
We at the Festival Theatre thought we should give Lee a chance to describe his show in his own words, so here goes… hello u blurb readin legend! Its Lee Nelson here from off ur tele + i’m coming to a crap town near u with my brand new WELL NEW TOUR! its gonna b bigga + betta + funnier than my last tour + a lot fatter coz this time i’m bringing my best mate + fat legend Omelette! so don’t b a mug, stop readin this rubbish and buy urself a ticket! special note 2 birds – if u ask nicely i’ll sign ur breasts afta the show

New Adventures’ inspired production of Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker! returns to Edinburgh. This delicious theatrical feast has family sized helpings of Matthew Bourne’s trademark wit, pathos and magical fantasy. Nutcracker! follows Clara’s bittersweet journey from a bleak night at Dr. Dross’ orphanage for waifs and strays, through a shimmering, ice-skating, winter wonderland to the scrumptious candy kingdom of Sweetieland. “It is a production that can appeal to children and to the most hardened of dance-fiends. A splendid evening of dance-theatre”
Tue 29 November - Sat 3 December
Tchaikovsky’s glorious score and Olivier Award-winning designer, Anthony Ward’s unforgettable sets and costumes combine with sizzling choreography to create a fresh, hip and charmingly irreverent interpretation of a traditional favourite. Matthew Bourne and New Adventures have achieved worldwide success with imaginative new stagings of popular classics such as Swan Lake, The Car Man, Cinderella and Edward Scissorhands. His work on the hit musical, Mary Poppins won him his fifth Olivier Award and he co-directed the West End smash hit Oliver!.

A CURVE THEATRE LEICESTER PRODUCTION
A touch of Broadway comes to Edinburgh this Christmas. Rodgers and Hammerstein’s The King and I tells the endearing story of the British governess brought to the Court of Siam to tutor the King’s many children. It has captured the hearts and minds of millions in its many stage and screen versions, and this spectacular new production from Leicester’s Curve Theatre has already played to sell-out audiences and received fantastic critical acclaim. It starts off a major UK tour with thirty performances in Edinburgh. Suitable for all the family the story is told through one of the most sumptuous and heart warming musical scores ever written that includes The March of the Siamese Children, Shall We Dance, I Whistle A Happy Tune, Hello Young Lovers and the unforgettable Getting To Know You. The King and I is directed by Curve Theatre’s Paul Kerryson, who has previously directed musicals including 42nd Street, Chicago, Sweeney Todd, and Mack and Mabel.

by Richard Bean, based on The Servant of Two Masters by Carlo Goldoni Direct from the National Theatre, James Corden plays Francis in this new English version of the classic Italian comedy – where sex, food and money are high on the agenda. Fired from his skiffle band, Francis Henshall becomes minder to Roscoe Crabbe, a small time East End hood, now in Brighton to collect £6,000 from his fiancée’s dad. But Roscoe is really his sister Rachel posing as her own dead brother, who’s been killed by her boyfriend Stanley Stubbers.
Tue 25 - Sat 29 October
Holed up at The Cricketers’ Arms, the permanently ravenous Francis spots the chance of an extra meal ticket and takes a second job with one Stanley Stubbers, who is hiding from the police and waiting to be re-united with Rachel. To prevent discovery, Francis must keep his two guvnors apart. Simple. Following his success with Gavin and Stacey, James Corden is reunited with National Theatre Director Nicholas Hytner for the first time since the worldwide hit The History Boys.

“Simon Callow performs these two Dickens monologues with enormous gusto, relish and skill… unalloyed Dickensian joy” ★★★★ Guardian
“theatre in its purest and most noble form” ★★★★★ Sunday Telegraph
“A gripping, hugely affecting comic delight” Metro
Simon Callow is a virtuoso storyteller who has already presented the life of Britain’s greatest novelist in The Mystery of Charles Dickens in both the West End and on Broadway. Now he brings to life two one-man plays by Charles Dickens after a sell-out London run. In an absorbing theatrical event he tells the stories of Dr Marigold, a travelling salesman who adopts a little deaf girl and Mr Chops, a freak-show turn who wins the lottery and a place in society. Adapted by Patrick Garland, these storytelling masterpieces provide a blend of the comic, bizarre and poignant that is classic Dickens.

Men Should Weep Written by ENA LAMONT STEWART Directed by GRAHAM MCLAREN Supported by Bank of Scotland
Set amid the grinding poverty of Glasgow’s infamous tenements in the 1930s, Men Should Weep has long been a favourite with audiences in Scotland. Following the misfortunes and trials and tribulations of the Morrison family, Ena Lamont Stewart’s landmark play is a searing, unflinching depiction of the hand to mouth poverty that many working class people lived in at that time. At the centre of the story and the Morrison family is Maggie, the hard working, care-worn matriarch. Supported and hindered in equal measure by a network of neighbours and

family – from whom it is impossible to keep any secrets and with whom there is a constant battle to maintain appearances – she does her very best in the worst of circumstances, always putting herself last. By turns laugh out loud funny, at times tragic, but always thought provoking, Men Should Weep was remarkably ahead of its time when written in 1947. This major new production by the National Theatre of Scotland will introduce this much-loved work to a new generation of theatergoers and remind those who have seen it before why it has become universally hailed.

Enjoy your visit ACCESS INFORMATION AUDIO DESCRIPTION For patrons who are blind or visually impaired, we offer an Audio Description service. We broadcast a simultaneous commentary of the visual elements of a performance through a personal headset. The describer will let you know things like where the characters are on stage, what they’re wearing, how they gesture and what the set looks like. Touch Tours of the set, costumes and props are also available; usually commencing 1 hour prior to the show starting. Places on the Tour should be requested when booking your show ticket.

BSL – SIGN LANGUAGE INTERPRETED For patrons who are deaf, deafened or hard of hearing we provide BSL Interpreted performances. A BSL Interpreter will stand on the stage to one side and interpret all spoken or sung speech during the performance. Please mention that you wish to use this service when you book your show tickets and we will allocate appropriate seats for you to clearly see the interpreter.
CAPTIONING For patrons who are deaf, deafened or hard of hearing we provide a Captioning Service. Captioning is a bit like subtitles on TV. The captions are shown on two raised display units (one either side of the stage) in large print and delivered at the same time as the words spoken or sung by the actors. This is also a wonderful service for anyone who has difficulty in following strong accents, or whose first language is not English.
