HANSEL AND GRETEL ENGELBERT HUMPERDINCK
Based on the familiar Grimms’ fairy tale, Humperdinck’s Hansel and Gretel is both funny and beautifully moving; a fantastical story of magic, poverty and the triumph of two children over their foolish elders. Hansel and Gretel are getting under their mother’s feet and, at the end of her tether, she sends them into the woods to collect strawberries. As darkness falls, they realise they are lost. Terrified, they spend the night on the forest floor. Next morning, to their amazement, they discover a house made of sweets and are soon helping themselves, unaware that they are falling straight into a trap set by the fabled Wicked Witch… Humperdinck’s rich score encompasses everything from luscious Wagnerian-inspired orchestration to touching tunes derived from folk melodies and nursery rhymes. Director Bill Bankes-Jones (Artistic Director of Tête à Tête) takes the opera back to its roots, revealing a traditional tale that’s full of enchantment.

A CO-PRODUCTION WITH TURIN OPERA SUPPORTED BY THE SCOTTISH OPERA SYNDICATE
THE RAKE’S PROGRESS IGOR STRAVINSKY
World-renowned Scottish director David McVicar stages his first Rake’s Progress, in partnership with Olivier awardwinning designer John Macfarlane. A colourful tale of debauchery full of energy and a bevy of larger-than-life characters, Stravinsky’s 20th century pastiche of late 18th century opera owes much of its inspiration to Mozart in a unique take on the neo-classical style. Tom Rakewell abandons his simple country life to seek out the bright lights of London in the company of Nick Shadow, a mysterious man with some distinctly devil-like tendencies. But after a stay in Mother Goose’s tavern, a meeting with a bearded lady, and a game of cards with unusually high stakes, things don’t look promising for our hero... A cast including Scottish Opera favourite Edgaras Montvidas, Steven Page (highly praised in English National Opera’s recent A Dog’s Heart) and internationally acclaimed recitalist Carolyn Sampson brings the production to life.

Anne Boleyn is traditionally seen either as a pawn manipulated into the King’s bed, or as a sexually licentious predator, even a witch. But howard brenton puts a very different Anne – and her ghost – on the stage. Witty and confident in her sexuality, she takes on the vicious world of Tudor Court politics. She is in love with Henry but also in love with the most dangerous ideas of her day. Conspiring with the exiled William Tyndale, Anne plots to make England Protestant forever.

THE SINGING KETTLE
Iolanthe stands as one of the most popular operas of the Gilbert & Sullivan series. Sullivan’s music sparkles and Gilbert’s libretto is dazzlingly inventive. The notion of a bunch of fairies taking over in Parliament is very intriguing – even a century after the piece was written. It might solve today’s political mess! SUPPORT US
LOVE YOUR THEATRES If you are passionate about the performing arts, then you’ll be delighted to hear that we are investing in two exciting projects which will see great improvements made to your Festival and King’s Theatres.
King’s Theatre 1906, opening year
THE KING’S RESTORATION Like most of us the King’s Theatre has been all wrapped up this winter – but instead of a woolly jumper the ‘Old Lady of Leven Street’ has been sitting cosy under a layer of scaffolding. That’s because from Jan 2012, the beloved Edinburgh venue is closing its doors for a spring revamp. The restoration project will include renovating the fabric of the building, improving disabled access with a lift and new Box Office, and enhancing your comfort with better ventilation and new seating in the Stalls and the renamed Dress Circle. The plush new seats will make a huge difference to your experience at the theatre – and they present a great opportunity to show your love for the King’s with our Dedicate a Seat scheme. From £300 you can make your mark on a piece of Edinburgh’s history with a commemorative plaque on the new seats.

We look forward to welcoming you back to your newly restored King’s Theatre in the summer at the Edinburgh International Festival 2012.
The King’s Restoration was made possible with funding from The City of Edinburgh Council, Historic Scotland and The Nancie Massey Charitable Trust

MAKE A DONATION EVERY PENNY COUNTS! Did you know the Festival and King's Theatres are run by a charitable trust? The costs of running these two historic venues cannot be covered by ticket income alone, and we rely on the generosity of theatre lovers like you to help invest in and improve your local theatres.

Preliminary artist’s impression of the new studio
HUGE THANKS TO ALL OUR SUPPORTERS FOR THEIR GENEROSITY PRINCIPAL FUNDER:
FESTIVAL THEATRE REHEARSAL STUDIO The Festival Theatre attracts some of the best performing arts companies in the world because of its huge stage, excellent backstage facilities and modern and spacious foyers. However, one thing the theatre currently lacks is a rehearsal studio, which makes it difficult to give touring companies the support they need – many companies simply have to rehearse on stage which is often impractical when setting up the show. We are therefore delighted to announce that this winter we will begin work creating a world-class rehearsal studio behind the theatre at Potterrow. The new studio will enable us to offer rehearsal facilities for visiting companies and will also become a valuable community resource, providing space for theatre and dance workshops and a practical space for amateur and youth drama groups to use. The new studio will double up as a small performance venue which will bring more opportunities for small scale productions to tour to the capital throughout the year.

CAPTIONING
For patrons who are deaf, deafened or hard of hearing we provide a Captioning Service. Captioning is a bit like subtitles on TV. The captions are shown on two raised display units on either side of the stage. The text is in large print and delivered at the same time as the words are spoken or sung by the actors. This is also a wonderful service for anyone whose first language is not English.
For patrons who are deaf, deafened or hard of hearing we provide BSL Interpreted performances. A BSL Interpreter will stand on the stage to one side and interpret all spoken or sung speech during the performance. Please mention that you wish to use this service when you book your tickets and we will allocate appropriate seats with a clear view of the interpreter. (See show pages for available performances)
AUDIO DESCRIPTION For patrons who are blind or visually impaired, we offer an Audio Description Service which broadcasts a performance commentary through a personal headset. The describer will let you know where the characters are on stage, what they are wearing, how they gesture and what the set looks like. Touch Tours of the set, costumes and props are also available; usually from 1hr before the show. Places on the Touch Tour are limited and should be requested when booking your show ticket. (See show pages for available performances) For full access information please visit: FESTIVAL THEATRE www.fctt.org.uk/FestivalAccess KING’S THEATRE www.fctt.org.uk/KingsAccess To receive an Access Brochure, please contact us on 0131 622 8099

Because it’s more than just a seat…
It’s owning a little piece of Edinburgh’s history
It’s where you went on that special date
It’s where you saw that actor give that unforgettable performance It’s where you experienced your first panto It’s a way to honour a loved one

Remember a loved one, celebrate an anniversary, mark a special occasion, promote your business or simply show your dedication to the King’s Theatre with a commemorative plaque on the new seats. Make your mark on a piece of Edinburgh’s history for £300 per seat or £500 for a pair MORE INFO: visit www.fctt.org.uk/support_us or call Lucy Clement on 0131 622 8087
