NABUCCO Giuseppe Verdi Wed 13 February 2013 7pm
LOVE OPERA
Streamed live from the Teatro alla Scala in Milan. A choral opera of biblical majesty. The threatening Babylonian emperor stalks through a world of contrasts, starting with that of the Jewish people he has subjugated. The music gives life to interwoven events served with a generous helping of pride, resentment, superstition and the spirit of conversion.
NOTRE DAME DE PARIS Roland Petit Thu 14 February 2013 7pm
LOVE DANCE
Streamed live from the Teatro alla Scala in Milan. Choreographer Roland Petit’s dramatic, passionate story revolves around Esmeralda, Quasimodo, Frollo and Phoebus: four great characters inspired by Victor Hugo’s 19th-century Romantic novel. Featuring costumes by Yves Saint-Laurent and a score by Maurice Jarre of Doctor Zhivago fame.
FALSTAFF Giuseppe Verdi Tue 12 March 2013 6.30pm Streamed live from Opéra National de Paris. For his last masterpiece, Verdi found the material for the comedy of his life-long dreams in the story of this old, penniless and pot-bellied knight: a huge roar of laughter, which still reverberates in us a century later. LOVE OPERA
RIGOLETTO Giuseppe Verdi Tue 9 July 2013 8.30pm

Tue 26, Thu 28 February & Sat 2 March 2013 Bringing to life one of Massenet’s finest works, this new production of Werther is testament to the destructive power of obsessive love. Set at the start of the 20th century and steeped in the folklore of rural life, director Pia Furtado’s production is an intimate study of the unraveling of one man’s hopes and dreams. Touching, emotional and heartbreakingly sad, this tragic tale of forbidden love features some of Massenet’s finest writing. The orchestration is rich and sonorous but captures the quirks and foibles of each of the characters perfectly – from Charlotte’s tortured conflict to Werther’s unstable passion and increasing hysteria. Acclaimed tenor Jonathan Boyd is Werther and Hungarian Mezzo Viktoria Vizin, renowned the world over for her Carmen, sings Charlotte. Scottish Opera Music Director Francesco Corti conducts. Evenings 7.15pm Unwrapped Wed 27 February 6pm (FREE - call Box Office to book) Sung in French with English supertitles. Running Time: 2hr 40min approx.

Celebrating the 200th anniversary of Wagner’s birth, this new production also marks Scottish Opera’s return to Wagner’s work for the first time since 2003’s Ring Cycle. Director Harry Fehr returns to stage a powerful production that is full of character and thick with brooding tension. Wagner’s epic score takes his characters from one overpowering emotion to the next. Full-blooded choruses, sweet, mellifluous melodies and an orchestral line driven by the furious rage and swell of the sea combine in a hugely atmospheric music-drama. Gilbert and Sullivan as it’s meant to be – pure, uncomplicated fun. Produced in partnership with D’Oyly Carte Opera Company this vibrant all-singing, all-dancing show is directed by Martin Lloyd Evans. Exquisitely observed and wonderfully funny, Gilbert’s high speed patter is razor sharp and Sullivan’s score sees him at the top of his game – mixing an operatic style to rival the great Italians of his day with the catchy, witty melodies for which he is so well known. G&S expert and D’Oyly Carte Music Director John Owen Edwards conducts. Evenings 7.15pm Matinee Sat 2.15pm Unwrapped Wed 29 May 6pm

Jo Strømgren’s Winter, Again will take you on a journey through the cycle of the darkest, coldest season, with underlying questions and mysterious happenings using songs from Schubert’s Eine Winterreise.
Featuring striking video imagery and love poems sung on stage, Marguerite Donlon’s Labyrinth of Love takes audiences on a humorous and heartbreaking journey through the joy and pain of love. Also featuring Merce Cunningham’s seminal Sounddance, Richard Alston’s witty and sharp Dutiful Ducks and Paul Taylor’s Roses. With live music by the Rambert Orchestra.

Mon 25 to Sat 30 March 2013 In 1997, a BAFTA award-winning British film about six out-ofwork Sheffield steelworkers with nothing to lose, took the world by storm. Simon Beaufoy, the Oscar-winning screenwriter of the film, has now gone back to Sheffield where it all started to rediscover the six men, the women, the heartache and the hilarity of a city on the dole. Featuring songs from the film by Donna Summer, Rod Stewart, Hot Chocolate and Tom Jones, The Full Monty is brought to the stage by a creative team led by award-winning director Daniel Evans. This Sheffield Theatres production is presented by David Pugh and Dafydd Rogers, the award-winning producers of ART, Brief Encounter and Calendar Girls, prior to London’s West End.

Tue 2 to Sat 6 April 2013 Leontes has everything a man could want: power, wealth, a loving family and friends. But he is not at peace. Inside he harbours a bitter jealousy that drives him to destroy all he holds dear. Many years later in a distant country a journey begins that may ultimately heal his pain and reunite his family in Shakespeare’s uplifting tale of reconciliation and forgiveness. Following her acclaimed 2012 production of The Taming of the Shrew, Lucy Bailey returns to the Royal Shakespeare Company to direct a cast including Adam Levy as Polixenes, Jo Stone-Fewings as Leontes and Tara Fitzgerald as Hermione, with music composed by Jon Boden, lead singer of hit folk band Bellowhead.

“ Wicked and compulsively watchable” Time Out
Wed 22 to Sat 25 May 2013 Director & Choreographer Matthew Bourne Music La Sylphide by Herman Severin Løvenskjold performed live by the Scottish Ballet Orchestra.
Presented exclusively by Scottish Ballet, Matthew Bourne’s Highland Fling is a wonderfully imaginative reworking of the classic romantic ballet La Sylphide with a wickedly wry Scotch twist.
Post-show Discussion Fri 24 May
Highland Fling follows the antics of James – a young Scot with sex and love and rock and roll on his mind. Recently married to his beloved Effie, his addiction to excess finds him in the fateful company of a beguiling gothic fairy. As his love for the strange and beautiful sylph becomes an obsession, he embarks on a fateful journey that takes him from the mean streets and nightclubs of Glasgow into a magical world beyond reality and reason.

A collaboration between one of Europe’s most exciting choreographers Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, Turner Prize-winning sculptor Antony Gormley and 17 practicing Buddhist monks from the Shaolin Temple in China, Sutra is at once deeply hypnotic, playful and breathtakingly athletic. The monks performing in Sutra, who follow a strict Buddhist doctrine, perform such spectacular, dare devil moves that you see them quite literally as leaps of faith.
This fully choreographed spectacular featuring 22 professionally trained Kung Fu Masters vividly depicts rarely-seen feats of agility strength and skill. Audiences will be amazed and thrilled by their death-defying Kung Fu disciplines such as Qigong, animal imitation boxing, drunken boxing, and fighting with over 20 kinds of dangerous traditional weapons.

Tue 1 to Sat 5 October 2013 From the award-winning producers of The King and I and High Society comes a new production of one of the world’s favourite musicals, directed and choreographed by Craig Revel Horwood, the nation’s favourite Strictly Come Dancing judge and master of the musical stage. Tevye, the local milkman in his village of Anatevka, has always stuck by his traditions, but suddenly his headstrong daughters decide that they want to marry for love rather than accept whatever Yente the Matchmaker comes up with. Tevye loves his daughters but has to convince his wife, and the villagers, that their decisions are actually falling in with tradition – not an easy thing to do, but if anyone can do it, the wily Tevye can! Filled to the brim with classic songs like If I Were a Rich Man, Matchmaker, Sunrise, Sunset and To Life, Fiddler On The Roof was the longest running production on Broadway for over 13 years - and when you join Tevye, his family and friends, you will understand why.

Celebrating this year’s centenary of composer Benjamin Britten, Richard Alston has especially revived his exhilarating Rumours, Visions.
Concessions
The music is Britten’s masterpiece Les Illuminations and both music and dance paint a vivid picture of the wild young genius Arthur Rimbaud, whose absinthe and drug-fuelled youth erupted in a brutally intense love affair with the older poet Paul Verlaine. Rumours, Visions depicts images from the turbulent life of the young poet, a genius and a misfit in equal part. He saw himself as a visionary who needed to be outside the normality of respectable society. “I alone”, he cried, “hold the key to this wild parade.”

Mon 18 to Sat 23 February 2013 Written by Laurence Marks and Maurice Gran (Birds of a Feather, Shine on Harvey Moon) and featuring the unmistakable music of Doc Pomus & Mort Shuman, this nostalgic, feel-good journey will transport you back to music’s golden era as we follow two teenage sisters through the summer of ‘63. Jennifer and Marie are off to the seaside without cares, without worries – and without parents! Full of freedom and high spirits they meet a handsome young American who invites them to a dance at the local U.S. Air force base... But young love and holiday romances are never as simple as they seem, and the sisters soon realise that while the world around them is still watching itself in black and white, life and love can be much more colourful. Featuring the unforgettable hits A Teenager In Love, Sweets For My Sweet, Turn Me Loose, Viva Las Vegas and Save The Last Dance For Me.

Mon 25 February to Sat 2 March 2013 Donna Summer is playing on the stereo. Dishes of cheese and pineapple are on the coffee table…the social gettogether from hell is about to begin. Don’t miss Lindsay Posner’s acclaimed revival of Mike Leigh’s iconic British play, starring Hannah Waterman, Martin Marquez, Samuel James, Katie Lightfoot and Emily Raymond, straight from a successful run in the West End. Beverly and her estate agent husband Laurence have invited round new neighbours, Tony and Ange and nervous divorcee Sue – who’s twitchy about the party her teenage daughter, Abigail, is throwing over the road. As Beverly plies the guests with alcohol, cigarettes, Demis Roussos and nibbles, this horribly compelling evening descends into drunkenness and debauchery.

Tue 5 to Sat 9 March 2013 Driving Miss Daisy is sure to bring a lump to your throat as an unlikely, long-lasting friendship blossoms between a prickly, elderly Southern matriarch, Daisy Werthan (Gwen Taylor, recently seen in Coronation Street) and her kind-hearted chauffeur, Hoke Coleburn (Don Warrington, well-known for his role in Rising Damp). As the wheels turn and the decades roll by against a backdrop of prejudice, inequality and civil unrest, the pair slowly transcend their differences and ultimately grow to rely on each other far more than either ever expected. Sparklingly funny, irresistibly heart-warming and with a wonderful much-loved cast, Driving Miss Daisy is the must-see show of 2013.

Tue 26 to Sat 30 March 2013 Dubious political dealings, a rioting populace, mishandled money - sound familiar? The Government Inspector is one of the world’s most famous plays. Written in 1835 and set in Tsarist Russia, it is a classic satire on human vanity. By turns hilarious and vicious in its exposé of corruption among those in power, this masterpiece seems made for the times we now live in. All night the Governor has dreamt of huge rats trying to devour him and now a Government Inspector is arriving imminently. The town officials are called together and told to waste no time in cleaning up their act - shredding incriminating documents, issuing gagging orders, blacking out of the media - they all have to work together, and fast, to cover up the corruption that’s been going on for years. This fast-paced, raucously entertaining black comedy features an electrifying cast and live Balkan-fused music including electric balalaikas and mouth organs!

Mon 15 to Sat 20 April 2013 When soldiers in the British Army are tasked with translating local place names from ancient Irish Gaelic to the King’s English, a series of misunderstandings and misinterpretations throws a small town in rural Ireland into tumult. After six years away in Dublin, Owen returns to his home town of Ballybegg with Lieutenant Yolland, who is working on the Ordinance Survey map of Ireland. Owen acts as a translator and go-between for the British and Irish. A love triangle complicates matters, and this poignant story is played out onstage under the much lauded direction of acclaimed actor and director, Adrian Dunbar. Direct from the 2013 UK City of Culture celebrations in Derry, Northern Ireland, where it was first performed in 1980, Translations is a masterwork from the Tony Award-winning playwright Brian Friel.

Tue 30 April to Sat 4 May 2013 Bill MacWilliam is determined that his son Cameron will join him on the Orange Walk. However, prompted by his mother’s recent death, Cameron has started to question his father’s beliefs. Matters come to a head with the arrival of the staunch Irish Catholic spinster from downstairs and her pregnant niece. Father is pitted against son and niece against aunt, as old prejudices are questioned and new ideals sought. On its fortieth anniversary, this political comedy still packs a punch in a Scotland where sectarian chants are still heard on football terraces. Don’t miss a play that will be one of the talking points of the year, in a production that is funny, thoughtful, challenging and ultimately uplifting. Following sell-out seasons at the National Theatre, on Broadway and in the West End
Mon 13 to Sat 18 May 2013 In 1934, a group of Ashington miners hired a professor to teach an art appreciation evening class. Rapidly abandoning theory in favour of practice, the pitmen began to paint. Within a few years the most avant-garde artists became their friends and their work was acquired by prestigious collections; but every day they worked, as before, down the mine. Examining the lives of a group of ordinary men who do extraordinary things, The Pitmen Painters is a humorous, deeply moving and timely look at art, class and politics. Written by Lee Hall, creator of the worldwide sensation Billy Elliot, The Pitmen Painters has received huge critical acclaim and won the Evening Standard Award for Best New Play.

Tue 4 to Sat 8 June 2013 The Old Vic and West-End smash hit Noises Off comes to Edinburgh following its triumphant and critically acclaimed sell out run in London. Hailed as one of the greatest British comedies ever written, Michael Frayn’s multi award-winning backstage farce serves up a riotous double bill - a play within a play. Hurtling along at breakneck speed it follows the backstage antics of a touring theatre company as they stumble their way through rehearsals, to a shambolic first night in Weston– super-Mare, and a final disastrous performance in Stocktonon-Tees.

Tue 1 to Sat 5 October 2013 Macbeth is dead, long live the King. Under cover of night, an English army has swept through the landscape, killed the tyrant and taken the seat of power. Attempting to restore peace and put in place a new ruler, Siward, the commanding officer, is beset by a brutal guerrilla uprising and simmering discontent amongst his own inexperienced troops. Struggling to grasp the alien customs and politics of this harsh country, he finds himself drawn towards Macbeth’s powerful widow in search of someone to share his burden of responsibility. Increasingly isolated from his own men and Scottish allies alike, his efforts to restore order appear futile as the situation spins out of control. Starring Siobhan Redmond, David Greig’s exhilarating play is a vision of one man’s attempt to restore peace in a country ravaged by war.

Tue 29 October to Sat 2 November 2013 I believe one should fight for what one believes. Provided one is absolutely sure one is absolutely right. Based on an autobiographical novel, To Sir, With Love is a truly inspirational story. Ricky Braithwaite, a Cambridge graduate, arrives in London and soon learns what it is to be black in post-war England. As a teacher in an East End school, he must find a way into the hearts and minds of his unruly class to motivate and inspire the disillusioned and challenging teenagers. To Sir, With Love was a major film of the 1960s starring Sidney Poitier and with a song made famous by Lulu. This exciting new stage adaptation is by Ayub Khan-Din, author of the acclaimed East is East; peppered with songs and music of the late ‘40s, it is as relevant today as it was when first written.

Adapted by Tim Luscombe and directed by Colin Blumenau, Mansfield Park is a spellbinding re-telling of Austen’s captivating novel, and a must-see for lovers of all classic drama. From the Theatre Royal Bury St Edmunds, the country’s last remaining Regency Theatre.
