The Empire Palace Theatre, Nicolson Street

The Festival Theatre stands on Edinburgh’s longest continuous theatre site, dating as far back as 1830, before, most famously, becoming the beloved Empire Palace Theatre in 1892. Over a century of famous acts trod the boards at the Empire - from Charlie Chaplin, Laurel and Hardy and Judy Garland, to Morecombe and Wise, David Bowie and Marc Bolan – before it became a Bingo Hall in 1963. The Krankies

The Festival Theatre reopened in 1994 (refurbished and rebuilt with a glorious curving glass frontage) for the first ever performance, starring The Krankies. “When we were asked to close the bill at the opening of the Festival Theatre, It was more exciting than our first Royal Variety Show at the London Palladium! We kept thinking of all the great names that had trod the boards of The Empire. Over the past two decades, some of the world’s most renowned companies have performed at the Festival Theatre, including Glyndebourne, the RSC and Kirov Ballet, and famous faces have continued to grace the stage. We begin and end our 20th Anniversary year in theatrical style: National Theatre’s War Horse kick-starts proceedings with its first, and only, Scottish visit in January, and we welcome Scottish Ballet as this year’s Christmas show with their hotly-anticipated reimagining of Peter Darrell’s The Nutcracker. The Festival Theatre operates as Scotland’s largest cinema during Edinburgh International Film Festival, and plays host to Edinburgh Jazz & Blues Festival and Edinburgh International Festival in the summer. Evenings 7.15pm Dominic Hill, Artistic Director of the Citizens Theatre, revives his brooding, atmospheric Macbeth in celebration of the 2014 Year of Homecoming. Inspired by events in the war-torn Balkans, Hill’s production is at once contemporary and ageless; a world of camouflage-clad leaders and grungy, chainsmoking witches, where power is all, but it comes at a price. Unsettling and full of tension, the drama of Shakespeare’s play is underlined by the brilliance of Verdi’s score, here performed by chamber orchestra. Desperate and furious, at times ethereal and visionary, Verdi’s music becomes even more immediate in this intimate setting, the tragedy even more intense.

In the first play ever written by Agatha Christie we are introduced to a character who went on to become the most famous detective of all time, and the only fictional character ever to receive a full-page obituary in The New York Times. Robert Powell is one of the country’s best loved actors. Having received multiple awards and a BAFTA nomination for his portrayal of Jesus in Franco Zefferelli’s Jesus of Nazareth, he went on to star in numerous film hits including The Thirty Nine Steps, Four Feathers and Shaka Zulu, and also featured in several TV series including The Detectives and Holby City. His extensive stage performances include roles in the national tours of Alan Bennett’s Single Spies and Jeffrey Bernard is Unwell before most recently appearing in Singing’ in the Rain in the West End.

Beginning in a 1930s monochrome Italian metropolis, Pastor shows a world torn apart by conflict in which Romeo and Juliet meet and fall deeply in love. The second act moves to the sepia-toned 1950s in the wake of Mussolini’s Fascist dictatorship, Romeo and Juliet have to hide their forbidden love. Finally, the third act is dominated by the eerie blue light of television cameras that report 24/7 from the frontline of global wars and the secret couple go to dramatic lengths to keep their love eternal. From Canadian choreographer Helen Pickett comes the world premiere of The Crucible, based on Arthur Miller’s 1953 Tony Award-winning play. Then, set to a recording of Dylan Thomas poems read by Richard Burton, Christopher Bruce’s Ten Poems builds on the melodic rhythm of the famous prose, bringing each one to life with exquisite vignettes of story and character.

Introducing participants to the company’s movement style and choreographic practice, the workshop will include class warm up, creative work and choreography. SCOTTISH BALLET Romeo & Juliet

Tue 20 May 2014 | The Studio Scottish Ballet’s education team will lead a CPD session inspired by Krzysztof Pastor’s vivid reinterpretation of Shakespeare’s greatest love story. Themes from the production such as conflict, family and tragedy will be explored.
