The inaugural 2007 Adelaide International Guitar Festival is a celebration of perhaps the most versatile and evocative musical instrument.
Welcome to the first Adelaide International Guitar Festival, a spectacular new annual event proudly presented by the Adelaide Festival Centre.
As an integral part of the world’s rich and varied musical heritage – and a vehicle for composition, performance and storytelling – the guitar can be neither ignored nor eclipsed. The first event of its kind held in Australia, this Festival is much more than a series of shows.
In what we anticipate will be a major fixture in Australia’s music events calendar, the Adelaide International Guitar Festival promises to be a must for all guitar devotees and music fans.
A superb line-up of local, national and overseas performers will treat us to concerts, masterclasses, artist fora, workshops and seminars. And they’ll showcase all forms in which the guitar shines: rock and jazz; blues and classical; flamenco, gospel and world music. Whether you’re a player or a fan, I urge you to explore this program and to join us in what promises to be a brilliant, unforgettable Festival.
We invite you to experience the versatility of this extraordinary instrument, in the hands of some the world’s finest guitarists, appearing exclusively at our Festival. So come join us at South Australia’s creative heart, for ten glorious days of guitar greatness. See you at the Festival Centre soon. Douglas Gautier CEO & Artistic Director Adelaide Festival Centre
Presented and produced by Adelaide Festival Centre with proud support from SA Government and SA Tourism, the Adelaide International Guitar Festival is an important new music festival that will sit firmly in music lovers’ calendars as an annual event not to be missed. range of opportunities on offer – from major outdoor concerts to small, intimate performances in theatres, showcases, masterclasses, forums, films, exhibitions and more. We are presenting exclusive and unique multiple artist line-ups and collaborations that you will not see anywhere else in the world. The 1st annual Adelaide International Guitar Festival is just a taste of what’s to come in future years. For ten spine tingling days, Adelaide will resonate to the sounds of guitar legends from around the world!
Welcome, guitar lovers. The inaugural AIGF offers a global perspective on the guitar’s capabilities, how different cultures have embraced it, and the crosspollination of techniques and styles. This gathering of guitarists, like a group exhibition, tells a story by association of the guitar’s origins and travels the genres it has influenced, and where it may be heading. Our players come from across the US (New York and Boston, Austin and Memphis), Europe (Scotland, England, Spain and Austria), South America (Brazil) India, West Africa and Australia (Perth, Sydney, Noarlunga Beach and downtown Adelaide). Of course, telling the guitar’s fascinating story in ten days is a little like visiting Australia and only seeing Uluru and Bondi Beach. But this is a good place to begin. Most of all, we hope the AIGF will challenge, entertain and inspire you and be a part of South Australia’s cultural life for years to come.
Our Artists In Residence program enables you to have access to two of the most highly regarded artists in the world. The unique opportunity to engage with artists of this calibre will add a very personal and exciting dimension to your festival experience. Our artists will impart their skills, knowledge and creativity across all aspects of the festival, from concerts and solo performances to masterclasses, workshops and talks. Our Artists In Residence are the best of the best in what they do.
jeff lang Jeff is considered one of the most innovative and collaborative artists in this country. His reputation is second-to-none amongst both his peers and Australian audiences. As a musician, Jeff has a very generous nature that has led to some amazing collaborations with other artists – leading him to be regarded as a “mentor” and role model by other artists. We are honoured to have this genuine, passionate artist as our Australian Artist In Residence.

This documentary was made three years after Jimi Hendrix’s untimely death. It contains concert footage spanning the Marquee in 1967 to his last UK performance at the third Isle of Wight Festival in 1970, plus classic performances at Monterey, Woodstock, Fillmore East and Berkeley. Friends and prominent musicians, including Pete Townshend, Mick Jagger, Eric Clapton, Buddy Miles and Lou Reed talk about Jimi’s life, his influence on them as musicians and how he influenced the trajectory of rock music. Guitar masterclasses are traditionally focused on the classical guitar and have a particular format. A small number of carefully selected students is provided with the once-in-a-lifetime chance to work one-on-one with the Master, receiving individual advice, feedback and demonstration. It is an intense, involving process – as rigorous for the Master as it is for the Student. Adelaide International Guitar Festival offers audiences the unique opportunity to watch the process of a masterclass in an opendoor policy. We are offering highly specialised masterclasses to music students studying at tertiary and post-graduate levels. We invite you to come along to watch – turn your mobile phone off, take a seat quietly and appreciate the commitment, determination and years of application it takes to be the best of the best.
Adelaide International Guitar Festival is not just about performances by guitarists. In fact, it’s much more than that. It’s also about education and access and opportunity. Why is the guitar considered the world’s most accessible instrument? How did that artist get to be where they are today? What are the current influences on contemporary musicians? A good live performance will often leave you satisfied but, sometimes, with more questions than you had before. Which is why, in addition to the extraordinary range of performances on offer, we are also presenting a broad range of other participatory opportunities including Forums, Discussions, Masterclasses, Workshops, Films, Visual Arts, Artist Talks – all free or for a very reasonable cost. We encourage you to round out your selected AIGF performances with some other experiences… go on, you know you want to!

Banning Eyre has been working in genres as diverse as jazz, flamenco, dance-rock and reggae. For the past fifteen years, he has specialised in guitar styles from Africa, playing in a series of Congolese soukous bands, a number of bands focused on West African folk music, and also a group that combines traditional music from Zimbabwe and Mozambique with guitar. Alvin Youngblood Hart
Adalita is the principal songwriter and lead singer of the punk-rock Australian band Magic Dirt, which has been blasting ear drums at punk rock pubs across Australia for a number of years. Three gigs into their budding career, Magic Dirt were invited to support the likes of Sonic Youth, Beck, Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Dinosaur Jr and Pavement.
Aloysius Leeson is an Adelaide performer who has been playing guitar since he was a child. After studying classical guitar at the Elder Conservatorium, he took up flamenco. This led him to spend time in Spain following the traditional apprenticeship of accompanying singers and dancers, studying with maestros and playing at Juergas (parties). Eventually he was able to work at the dance studios of Javier Cruz and Maria Angeles in Seville. Since coming back to Australia he has continued to work as a soloist and with a variety of dancers and singers. He recently released his second CD of original compositions, Chispa Flamenca, and continues to explore the possibilities of the guitar in many different styles.
Alvin has been called the cosmic American love child of Howlin’ Wolf and Link Wray. Considered a “musician’s musician”, Alvin’s praises have been sung by everyone from Ben Harper to Eric Clapton and Mick Taylor.
Adalita has been composing for over 13 years and has travelled to the US, Japan, Britain, Europe and New Zealand. She has been invited to collaborate with numerous Australian artists, speak at creative writing lectures at universities and give motivational talks to young women, as well as playing to tens of thousands of people at scores of festivals, pubs, clubs and arenas around the world. She now adds acting and film scores to her list of achievements. Event: Kiss The Sky

Alvin has received multiple awards including: the 1997 W.C Handy Award for Best New Artist; two Living Blues Awards; his 1998 release Territory received the Downbeat Magazine Critics Poll Award for Best Blues Album; his ‘99 album, Start With The Soul was chosen as a New York Times top 10 release of 2000 and the BBC’s Blues Record of the Year; and in 2003 and 2004 he earned Grammy nominations. A devout follower of the ‘no barriers’ approach laid by veteran performers like Gatemouth Brown and Doug Sahm, Alvin continues to defy the purists.
Brazilian Guitar Quartet In Brazil they are called the “DREAM TEAM” – four of that country’s most brilliant guitarists. Since their founding in 1998, the Brazilian Guitar Quartet has become one of the world’s most sought-after guitar ensembles. They have had engagements in every major US city, the Hong Kong International Festival, the Monterrey Guitar Festival (Mexico), Pro Arte Musical (Puerto Rico), and other festivals throughout the world including UK, Portugal and Denmark. As ‘headliners’ at the first World Guitar Congress in Baltimore, the Brazilian Guitar Quartet gave the world premiere with the Baltimore Symphony of a concerto for guitar quartet and orchestra by Brazilian composer Ronaldo Miranda. “Seductive beauty . . . virtuosic gusto.” Washington Post Event: Bach, Brazil and Beyond

Cindy Cashdollar
Australian guitarist and producer Charlie Owen has worked with a number of wellknown acts including Tex, Don and Charlie and recording and touring with renowned Cold Chisel songwriter Don Walker. He has now joined well-known Australian rock band Beasts Of Bourbon. Its frontman, Tex Perkins, claims Charlie is “the best rock guitar player I have seen”. Charlie has worked for several years with Tex as producer, musical director, co-writer and musical partner, completing three albums and drawing numerous ARIA nominations.
Chris is an Adelaide virtuoso guitarist, percussionist and singer with roots in Mississippi Delta Blues, Indian, Celtic and South African Music. He also manages to blend his unique fusion of influences with an extensive repertoire of original songs and powerful interpretations of traditional music. Chris creates joyous, mystical, humorous and rich rhythms that are impossible to pigeon-hole.
Cindy is an Austin-based Dobro and steel guitarist who has worked with Rod Stewart, Van Morrison, Ryan Adams, Bob Dylan, Willy Nelson, Dolly Parton, The Dixie Chicks, Asleep at the Wheel, Garrision Keillor, Marcia Ball, Jorma Kaukonen, Leon Redbone, BeauSoleil, Daniel Lanois and Redd Volkaert – just to name a few! She now adds to the list, Bob Brozman.
Chris has performed and shared the stage with such blues legends as Buddy Guy, Bo Diddley, John Hammond, John Mayall, Roy Buchanen, Dave Van Ronk, Keb Mo, Michael Hills Blues Mob, The Holmes Brothers, Sam Carr, the Delta Rhythm Kings and Bob Brozman. He has also played with Australian blues greats and plays regularly at solo concerts, pubs, clubs, folk and blues festivals throughout Australia.
With five Grammy Awards to her name, today Cindy is one of the most in-demand musicians on the American roots scene. Her debut CD, Slide Show, features a who’s-who of the contemporary roots scene including Marcia Ball, Steve James, Mike Auldridge and Sonny Landreth. And to answer her most asked question: yes, Cashdollar is her real name.
In his twenty years in the world of music Charlie has continually and consistently pushed the boundaries of genres and musicians to create challenging and artistic music whether it be on the world stage, behind the scenes or at any local live music venue. His reputation as an artist and musician in this country is second to none and in 1998 Paul Kelly wrote a song about Charlie entitled Charlie Owen’s Slide Guitar, such is Charlie’s fame in the Australian music industry.

David Lindley
First coming to prominence as the guitarist for the all-female Australian rock band Girl Monster, Anne McCue is now based in the US. She has since established an international solo career as a alternative country blues rock singersongwriter and guitarist and has toured with a number of well-known musicians. On an international tour with Lucinda Williams, Lucinda would often introduce McCue as “my new favourite artist... and an amazing guitarist”.
Beau is not only an inspiring singer, songwriter and musician, he’s also a world champion surfer, becoming World Champion in 2000 and 2003. His father, Nat Young, is considered one of the greatest surfing ambassadors of all time.
Benjamin is identified by many as an American original and master with over 15 albums and a collection of recordings that have helped to put him in the first rank of today’s classical guitarists. His new release Branches (Mushkatweek), features arrangements of works by Bach, Mozart, Strauss, the traditional Amazing Grace, Hendrix and Verdery.
Bob is a master of slide, fingerstyle and percussive guitar and an exhilarating performer who spans the global and musical spectrum. His chords and harmonies articulate an acute blend of timbres from Hawaiian, Indian, African, Japanese/Okinawan, Caribbean and American roots/blues.
Corey shook up the blues scene with his 1995 debut release, Between Midnight and Day. It was a pure masterpiece of rural blues that established him as one of the preeminent young bluesmen and vital to America’s roots music.
Dan Rumour is guitarist and creator of legendary roots rock band The Cruel Sea. As guitarist and lead composer of his new band, Dan Rumour began touring and recording in early 2005 in his own roots instrumental style. Since then his guitar virtuosity has become one of the most recognisable 6-string sounds in Australia.
Danny Clinch’s artwork is about the purity of the music and those who create it. His work has appeared in publications such as Vanity Fair, Spin, Rolling Stone, GQ, Esquire, The New Yorker, and The New York Times Magazine, and his photographs have appeared on hundreds of album covers. Danny has mixed art, commerce and fashion with his John Varvatos clothing advertising campaigns, which mixes classic clothing design with classic rock ’n’ roll photography. He has presented his work in numerous galleries and published two books: Discovery Inn (1998) and When the Iron Bird Flies (2000).
Multi-instrumentalist David Lindley redefines the word “eclectic”. Known for his many years as the featured accompanist with Jackson Browne, and leader of his own band El Rayo-X, David is a long-time champion of world music.
Success on Lucinda’s tour promoted the release of a new album, Roll, which received critical acclaim in the US. Her 2006 album Koala Motel showcases her impressive talent on electric and acoustic guitars and shows her maturing as an important new artist. “Besides having a bluesy voice and songs to match, McCue is an accomplished guitarist who can handle Delta blues and fat feed-back as well as quieter folk stylings” Washington Post Events: Artist Talks, Forum Discussions, Kiss The Sky
Inspired and encouraged by friend Ben Harper, Beau has now turned his creative energy to his love of music. His debut album in 2005, Waves of Change, hit the Top 10 on the independent Australian charts in Australia. Beau’s unique folk rock genre was still evident in his 2006 EP, Still. 2007 will see the anticipated release of his second full length album One Step at a Time. As a singer/songwriter, Beau has toured Japan, Italy, France and Spain. In Australia, Beau recently completed his first headline tour of the East Coast and has performed at many of Australia’s most respected festivals and the GreenRoom Festival in Japan. Event: Rips & Riffs
Charged with a great passion for playing music, Verdery’s love for his art instils his live performances with a rare exuberance. Verdery’s hands move with a fluid ease that is beautiful to see and beautiful to hear. A prolific composer, many of Benjamin’s compositions have been performed and published over the years. Most recently Peace, Love and Guitars for John Williams and John Etheridge, recorded at the Dublin Festival. Benjamin performs concerts worldwide, including major Festivals across America, Europe and Asia. “Verdery is without a doubt one of the classical guitar world’s foremost personalities” Classical Guitar Events: Artist Talks, Forum Discussions, Kiss The Sky, Masterclasses, Travelling Light
Bob has a collection of hand-tricks that make audiences look for electronic effects that in fact don’t exist: his show is the clean product of acoustic genius. Such fingerwork has been described in world press as “uniquely staggering”. Bob’s familiarity with diverse world music cultures produces a novel blending of rhythmic and timbral influences. You will relish Bob’s rhythmic dexterity which resonates to elements of blues, jazz, Gypsy swing, calypso, sega and even the most modern hip-hop and ska beats.
Today, Corey performs solo and with his band but is beyond musical categorisation. He is right at home at many of the world’s most prestigious venues and festivals. His 2002 album, Downhome Sophisticate, was critically acclaimed as one of the year’s most brilliant and original releases. It pushed Corey’s already high expectations as a songwriter and musician and revealed a rare gift for merging blues, African pop, rock and electronica. His 2004 release, Mississippi to Mali serves up an impossibly brilliant juxtaposition of African music and blues.
“If music existed in another universe, Bob would be the Planet Earth’s representative for an interplanetary collaboration.” Journalist Paul Fisher

The Dan Rumour Band is purely instrumental, just as The Cruel Sea was when it first began. Its members are Jim Elliot and Dan Rumour from The Cruel Sea, and Michael Turner and Nick Larkins from well-travelled Tassie indie legends, Wild Pumpkins At Midnight. Many describe the band’s music as a soundtrack for real life. In May 2006 they recorded tracks for an Australian surf music CD & DVD package called Delightful Rain, for which the film of the sessions was broadcast nationwide on ABC Television. “The songs are relaxed and lovely, with strong emotional connections... Rumour’s roots are in the instrumentals of Australia’s surf and rock scene of the sixties” reverbcentral.com Event: Rips & Riffs
Danny has also created a film production company called Three on the Tree Productions. From TV spots to featurelength film, Danny brings the same aesthetic seen in his stills to motion pictures. Some of the projects produced by Three on the Tree include Bruce Springsteen’s Devils & Dust album, Skin & Bones, the recently released concert film on the Foo Fighters, and he is currently completing a concert/documentary film on Pearl Jam. A David Lindley electro-acoustic performance combines American folk, blues and bluegrass traditions with elements from African, Arabic, Asian, Celtic, Malagasy and Turkish musical influences. Throughout his long and distinguished career, David has lent his skills to the works of Bob Dylan, Rod Stewart, Crosby and Nash, and many others. “Lindley and Ingram concoct amazingly dense layers of sound… the organic world-beat stew that they deliver is as unique as the rarest critter on the planet” The Music Box Event: On The Verge

Dog Trumpet is the vehicle for the musical activities of brothers Peter O’Doherty and Reg Mombassa. Reg and Peter were long-time members of Mental As Anything but left the Mentals several years ago to concentrate on their artwork as recognised visual artists in their own right. They play as an acoustic duo or as a full band with various line-ups of guest musicians.
Ed Kuepper is an Australian guitarist, singer, songwriter and national treasure, and has been called “A one man army on a guitar…” While still at high-school in 1973, he formed The Saints who became internationally acknowledged as having helped set the tone for punk, right up there with The Sex Pistols and The Ramones.
American guitarist Eliot Fisk is a creative innovator and born risk-taker who has expanded the classical guitar’s repertoire with ground-breaking transcriptions. For his service to the cause of Spanish music, King Juan Carlos of Spain awarded him the Cruz of Isabel la Cátolica, a rarely bestowed honour.
Nominated for Contemporary Blues Album of the Year in the 2007 Blues Music Awards (the world’s premier blues awards) for her album Lucky 13, Fiona is the first Australian blues artist to be so honored. The album was described as ‘one of the most sizzling blues albums – by anyone – in years’.
Guitar Safari is a local side-project ensemble made up of three of South Australia’s top artists; Chris Finnen, Paddy Montgomery and Josh Bennett.
This four piece Adelaide band plays rocking blues based on the early style of Texas blues band, the Fabulous Thunderbirds.
Ed will be accompanied by Jeffrey Wegener on drums. Wegener is the former drummer for Kuepper’s legendary post-Saints act, Laughing Clowns, and more recently accompanied Kuepper on a UK tour.
Eliot Fisk is the last direct pupil of Andrés Segovia and has also studied interpretation under the legendary harpsichordist, Ralph Kirkpatrick. Today, Eliot is internationally recognised for his adventurous repertoire and dazzling performances as both a soloist and with major orchestras. He brings a new dimension to classical guitar performance and his numerous recordings have entered the Billboard charts as bestsellers.
National and international touring artist Heather Frahn fuels her music with a vibrant young woman’s passion and delivers with a deep, dynamic voice that is undeniably her own. Musically she draws on blues, funk, roots and new folk, creating her own sound best described as “roots-based funky groove with positive life lyrics”.
Ian “Dr Zot” Stehlik grew up in Adelaide where he started playing guitar as a teenager. Inspired by seeing Muddy Waters and other guitar legends during a student exchange year in the US, Ian brought an old Gibson back home. This instrument accompanied him in several Adelaide bands and sparked a life-long interest in vintage guitars.
Dog Trumpet have released four albums and two EPs of original material since 1991. Their most recent album, Anti Social Tendencies was released in 2007. It contains 12 original songs plus a cover of Lili Marlene. The album has received glowing reviews, including ‘Album of the Week’ in the Sydney Morning Herald and a 4 star review in The Australian. Event: Space Foyer Performance
He has recorded over a dozen albums in his own name with a variety of backing bands, including The Yard Goes On Forever, The Oxley Creek Playboys and The Institute Of Nude Wrestling. He received ARIA Awards in 1993 and 1994 for Best Independent Australian Release, with similar ARIA nominations throughout the later 90s. Ed’s rare and deep sense of song and lyrical power are backed by a reputation on the guitar that literally changed the course of modern music. True to form, Ed has only improved in quality.
“The adventurous Fisk is widely regarded as among the top five or six classic-style players worldwide… his spectacular technique, born from relentless problemsolving, is as inventive and assured as a mature master” Toronto Star Events: Echoes of Spain, Masterclasses

As a multiple winner of every major performance and recording award in the Australian blues scene, in 2003 Fiona competed in the world’s premier showcase for emerging blues talent, the Blues Foundation’s International Blues Challenge. She became the first Australian and the first woman ever to win this prestigious event. Fiona’s many years of experience and touring have earned her the respect of some of the world’s great blues artists with whom she has played and recorded. She is, without doubt, one of the foremost blues women playing today.
Each member is a recognised, practicing artist in his own right and busy schedules mean they only come to the stage as Guitar Safari two or three times each year. Formed as a vehicle for fun, musical camaraderie and creative expression, Guitar Safari plays ‘acoustic world music’ and makes full use of each member’s background in multiple instrumentation and diverse genres. Experience the joy, humour and harmony created when three staggeringly good musicians collaborate for no other reason than the pure enjoyment of playing together. Event: Wah-Bar: SA Gunslingers

Heather delivers with a unique combination of instruments and has been sponsored by Adelaide’s Salvi’s Fine Guitars with a custom-made “8 stringed hybrid baritone guitar – bass”. She also performs with Irish bouzouki, stomp box and foot percussion. Heather holds great skill as a live performer, with a rare ability to sing difficult and dynamic vocal lines while simultaneously playing solid and uplifting grooves.
FourPlay Electric String Quartet Quite simply, there is no other string quartet operating like FourPlay in the world today. They bring a dynamic fusion of a rock ’n’ roll mentality and pop sensitivity to the finely honed skills of classical musicians with years of training. From the concert halls of Asia to the gritty rock pubs of Newcastle, and from British arts centres to the Australian folk festival circuit, they have always been unique. They stand out as a band backed by original works and covers, laced with lush vocals and effects pedals. “Forget everything you ever knew about string quartets. This is the future.” Drum Media “FourPlay have as much attitude in their playing as Jet, AC/DC or Coldplay… What’s more, the band contradicts the not unpopular notion that classical music and rock can never sit side by side” The Australian Event: Kiss The Sky

Singer and bass player Frank Lang is passionate about bass and the work of the rhythm section to make music rock, and why not, with guitar legends Mauri Berg and Dave Small in the band. Dave has an almost fretless style of playing and the monica “king of swing” sits well with this strat player. Mauri can set the demons loose with his solos.

Guy Strazz and Rodrigo GalvÃo It’s almost impossible to comprehend this overwhelming fusion of electro-acoustic classical guitar with Brazilian-World percussion and Afro-Brazilian Jazz. But the experience is pure and exhilarating Afro-Brazilian jazz where sparks fly. Guy’s blending of electro-acoustic guitar, classical guitar, East-West guitar and electric guitar virtuosity is compelling. Add to this the brilliance of Rodrigo’s Brazilian percussion and you have a combination dedicated to stirring rhythms beyond belief. Guy’s unique compositions draw inspiration from Afro-Brazilian, jazz and Indian classical music. His collaborations include work with Vishwa Mohan Bhatt, Vince Jones, Ashok Roy, Slava Grigoryan, Matt McMahon, Sandy Evans and Mike Stern. Rodrigo, born in Brasilia from a musical family, has collaborated with Cássia Eller, Renato Vasconcellos Quartet, Rosa Passos, Brasilia Popular Jazz Orchestra and Nelson Faria Trio: Don Burrows, Mike Nock and Espirito. Both Guy and Rodrigo were already seasoned international performers when they formed in Japan in 2005. You can only imagine what dozens of performances together have created. It’s been said of Jeff Lang that his only reference point is himself. With his unique blend of rock, roots, folk, blues, ballads, instrumentals and improvisation he follows his own path with confidence and extraordinary musicianship. Jeff is an Australian based musician with worldwide acclaim as a virtuosic guitarist and a dynamic songwriter. Jeff backs up his live appearances at major festivals, pubs, clubs, arts centres and international venues with an impressive catalogue of 12 studio albums. His outstanding guitar abilities never get in the way of the brilliance of his music. He has toured with Ani DiFranco, Chris Whitley, Albert Collins, Bob Dylan, Bob Geldof, Richard Thompson and Greg Brown. Lang has built up a devoted almost cult-like following with his live performances. Working without a set list, allowing a unique energy in each night to shape the songs and taking the audience along for his ride has seen word of mouth bloom into a successful career for Lang. That Jeff Lang is a truly great guitar player is beyond question. The unusual thing is that the guitar playing never gets in the way of the music.

Jim Moginie Legendary Midnight Oil guitarist, Jim Moginie, is an inventive guitarist with worldwide acclaim. Since the Oils’ retirement in 2002, their co-founder, guitarist, keyboard player and songwriter has been, in his own words, “pretty busy”. Check the fine print on albums by The Sleepy Jackson, Neil Finn, Silverchair, End of Fashion, Sarah Blasko, David Bridie and Kasey Chambers for starters. Jim is proud of his 25-year career in one of Australia’s most internationally successful and influential bands, but is more interested in exploring new horizons. His recent solo release, Alas Folkloric, has been described as a revelation unto itself. In this album there is an air of radical departure as one of our most thoughtful songwriters follows his heart to a new level of personal expression. After many years of classic recordings, the calibre of this recent Hall of Fame inductee’s craft is now coming to light. Juan MartÍn
Kaki King
Karin Schaupp
Kerrianne Cox
Jim Redgate is Adelaide based and has built classical guitars for the international market since 1985. He is recognised worldwide for his innovative design and development of the instrument. His use of high tech materials such as Carbon Fibre and Kevlar in the mostly conservative field of lutherie has attracted worldwide interest, and his guitars are known for their exceptional volume, response and tone.
Guitarist/songwriter John Baker and accordianist Gayle Buckby create a seductive and potent world with songs influenced by a background in jazz and laced with Latin, European and contemporary folk elements. John Baker is a storyteller – his intimate and poetic songwriting pitches a curious slant on the all too familiar subjects of love, people and relationships.
Grammy Award-winner and multi WC Handy Award-winner, blues veteran John Hammond has spent 45 years captivating blues, folk and rock audiences around the world with intense solo-acoustic blues. He has shared the stage and recorded with the masters, including Muddy Waters, Willie Dixon, John Lee Hooker and Howlin’ Wolf. Over 31 albums later, John is considered a true international blues veteran.
Juan Martín is a celebrated virtuoso of the flamenco guitar who has been voted one of the top three guitarists in the world by US magazine Guitar Player. A native of Andalucía, he has also been compared to the great Spanish composers Tárrega and Turina. Juan formed an international company, Flamencovision, in London for the promotion of high quality flamenco. Now, with 18 albums (mostly as a composer), four best-selling DVDs, and his method book El Arte Flamenco de la Guitarra in its ninth print, Juan has opened the complex art of the flamenco guitar to the entire world.
New York-based Kaki is considered a true rising star of the music world. Renowned as somewhat of an acoustic guitar genius, Kaki has more recently picked up an electric guitar and also added vocals to elements of her performance.
Karin is one of the most outstanding young guitarists on the international scene as a recitalist, concerto soloist and festival guest. She has performed countless recitals in Australia, Europe, Asia, USA, Mexico and Canada with the highest acclaim from international critics and audiences alike.
More than a singer/songwriter, Kerrianne is a catalyst for change and a leader with an uncanny and soulful ability to touch people with her songs – not just as an Aboriginal person, but as a human being.
Jim graduated from the Elder Conservatorium of Music with a Bachelor of Performance on the Classical Guitar in 1988 and is an active performer in different genres of music from Classical to Rock. It is this depth of experience which enables him to evaluate and develop his instruments from a player’s perspective, and his instruments are known for their almost effortless playability. Also a master craftsman, Jim considers himself primarily an acoustic designer developing an understanding of the mysterious science and theory of guitar construction. Redgate guitars are sought after by some of the world’s leading performance artists and he currently has a three year waiting list for his creations.

His latest CD (Push Comes To Shove) includes several original compositions and was produced by the soulful Philly singer/guitarist and longtime Hammond fanatic G. Love. Jorma Kaukonen
Jordan Verzar
Josh Bennett
John is a major force in the discussion and commentary of modern music from around the world. As the host of WNYC’s daily arts show Soundcheck (USA) he continues to keep a disc-spinning finger on the musical pulse.
A legend of American rock, folk and blues music, Jorma Kaukonen is most widely known for his distinguished fingerpicked fretwork and song writing in Jefferson Airplane as well as his spin-off band Hot Tuna. He has nearly 30 years of prodigious recording longevity, with more than two dozen albums. Hot Tuna is still an active and successul musical force in America, as is Jorma himself, with his new album Stars In My Crown achieving wide popular and critical acclaim.
Jordan manages Top Shelf, an artistically-orientated music company working as an alternative to the mainstream. It was established by Jordan six years ago and currently handles a diverse roster of local and international music with a focus on acoustic, world music, virtuosity and fusion.
Josh first cut his teeth in the Adelaide blues scene but after becoming hooked on Indian music, now incorporates Sitar, Tabla and Dilruba, a bowed instrument similar to Sarangi.
Since 1982 John has also hosted and produced the radio series, New Sounds. The program is devoted to new and overlooked music from around the country and the world. It was recently named “The #1 radio show for the Global Village” by Billboard Magazine. In 1986, Schaefer began producing the New Sounds Live concert series, which presents new works, commissioned pieces, overlooked classics, and silent films with live music. With thumping bass lines, tapping melodies and slapping percussion, Kaki is a force of acoustic havoc. She plays with a passion and edge that keeps her tenuously balanced – one foot in the acoustic world, the other in rock’n’roll. “King performed some real show-stoppers in amongst the orgy of fret-tapping, some intricate finger-picking and a few techniques that probably haven’t even been named yet… an often breathtaking performance” dB Magazine Events: Kiss The Sky, On The Verge, Wah-Bar

Kerryn Tolhurst
Lucky Oceans
Luther Dickinson
A formidable presence in Australian folk, rock and roots music since the late 60s, Kerryn has also earned an enviable reputation in North America as a distinctive musician, charttopping songwriter and sought-after producer.
Reggae, jazz, country, zydeco, free improvisation, blues, top 40 hits, and western swing – whatever the style, US born master of the pedal steel guitar, Lucky Oceans, has played it all with fascinating effect. Just as a pedal steel guitar can slide between the conventional notes of Western music, so too does Lucky’s music slide between genres, defying limitations.
Luther’s musical journey started with the creative and musical environment inspired by his father, musician and renowned producer Jim Dickinson (who has worked with musical greats including Bob Dylan and The Rolling Stones).
Kerryn sprang to national attention in the 1970s as a defining member of Country Radio and The Dingoes, writing the hit-song Way Out West. Both bands are credited with pioneering a unique fusion of Australian bush balladry, folk, country and rhythm‘n’blues. When The Dingoes disbanded, Kerryn remained in America writing songs for other artists including the Billboard Top 20 hits All Fired Up for Pat Benatar and Man On Your Mind for The Little River Band. He has produced work for New York songwriters Jimmy Norman and Bruce Henderson, Australia’s Jeff Lang, Paul Kelly, The Black Sorrows, Pigram Brothers and many others.
Lucky recorded seven albums for major record labels with his band, Asleep At The Wheel, with whom he won a Grammy Award for Best Country Instrumental in 1978. He won a second Grammy in 1993 for a recording he made with the Wheel, Chet Atkins and other celebrated artists. He has also released two solo albums. In 1995, he became presenter of ‘The Planet’ world music program on ABC Radio National and its accompanying TV program.
Kerryn’s characteristic contributions on resonator guitar, lap steel, mandolin and guitar add a profound and colourful emotional texture to albums.
Moving to Australia at the peak of his career, (he is included in the book ‘The 1,000 Greatest Guitarists’) he re-invented himself as a radio guru, composer, producer, singer, band leader and even as a button accordionist, but his most significant development has been in his new, expressive and innovative approach to the pedal steel. With an emotive style nutured in the deep traditions of the American South and matured in the fresh air of Fremantle, he is a master of deep musical expression with a strong element of surprise.

Kerryn also conceived and produced Delightful Rain, a celebration of Australian surf music, and has performed in many New York Guitar Festival events.
In 1996 Luther, with brother Cody, started the North Mississippi Allstars. NMA blends Mississippi Hill Country Blues with psychedelic southern rock and a gospel influence. NMA has released four studio albums (three of which have been nominated for the Grammy for Best Contemporary Blues Album) and one live recording. In the late 90s Luther produced two records from the late Otha Turner. Everybody Hollerin’ Goat (1998) and From Senegal to Senatobia (2000) were released to critical praise, with Rolling Stone recognising Everybody Hollerin’ Goat as “…One of the five best blues records of the 90s”. More recently Luther has started Circle Sound with friend and Black Crowes guitarist Rich Robinson, and Black Crowes veterans Sven Pipien, Rob Clores, and original Crowes drummer Bill Dobrow. Paddy Montgomery
Mick Wordley has been involved in recording predominantly guitar-orientated albums and projects for some 25 plus years. His projects have included working with producers such as: Steve Albini, Kerryn Tolhurst, Joe Camilleri, Geoff Stapleton, Rolf De Heer, and many others.
South Australian singer/songwriter Nick Krieg employs a wealth of musical forms and influences to produce blues-flavoured left-of-centre songs of longing and damnation, redemption and the curious foibles of human nature. Nick is also a talented multi-instrumentalist and a skilled guitarist, with his superb artistry as well as his technical proficiency enabling him to independently record and produce two solo albums.
Paddy Montgomery is an Adelaide based guitarist and multi-instrumentalist with a strong background in blues and folk. Over the past few years he has devoted most of his time to the folk and classical music of Turkey and regional Greece. He founded a band called Dionysus which plays traditional folk music of Greece and the Balkans, which has supported some great musicians such as Andy Irvine and Mozaik, and the legendary band from Greece Apodimi Compania.
This has bought about many benchmark recordings of artists performing at their best... live, comfortable and rocking. Event: Seminar
Lap steel slide guitar makes the crucial rhythmical elements heard on his album Cupid Stunt. His latest release Ra Dog is slightly different texturally and instrumentally with more traditional guitar work, however both albums are richly woven with his smooth vocals, somewhere between Al Stewart and Bob Dylan. Inspired by his father’s Ode to Brachina, a geological poem about the spectacular Brachina Gorge, he collaborated with Don Burrows and Kevin Hunt to produce Brachina – a journey through time in words and music. Highlights of his career include performing at WOMADelaide 2006 and for Singapore’s National Family Day celebration. Event: Wah-Bar: SA Gunslingers

Pigram Brothers: Alan, stephen & peter From WA’s treasured Pigram Brothers, this Festival presents Stephen (lead singer, guitarist & songwriter), Alan (lead guitarist and band’s producer) and Peter (bass guitar). The Pigram Brothers are a folk/rock band created in 1986 by brothers from the pearling town of Broome. Their music has appeared on other national and international television documentaries and series, and they have performed at festivals throughout the world. Alan and Stephen Pigram were the first indigenous artists to be inducted into the West Australian Music Industry’s Hall of Fame in 2006. Their interpretation of Richard Clapton’s Blue Bay Blues on the Delightful Rain CD/DVD project is hailed as one of that project’s highlights.
Ralph Towner With ever-fresh innovation and a career that spans over 30 years, Ralph Towner is one of the most diversely talented musicians of the past half-century. He has enjoyed a flourishing solo career but is best known as the lead composer, guitarist and keyboardist for the acoustic jazz ensemble Oregon. During the 70s, Oregon produced a number of highly influential recordings, mixing folk music, Indian classical forms and avantgarde jazz-influenced free improvisation. In 2000 the release of Oregon in Moscow, an orchestral double-CD recorded with the Tchaikovsky Symphony Orchestra, earned the ensemble an impressive four Grammy nominations.
The natural exuberance and spontaneity that has always been the trademark of the Pigram Brothers will be evident in all performances by Stephen, Alan and Peter.
Over time, Ralph’s guitar became synonymous with the 12-string with jazz, classical, folk and world music all resting easily within his eclectic range. His rich talents have served up highly successful collaborations with such greats as Gary Burton, John Abercrombie, Egberto Gismonti, Larry Coryell, Keith Jarrett, Jan Garbarek and Gary Peacock.

Mick Wordley
The artists he has worked with on many album projects are: Jeff Lang, Delightful Rain Surf compilation, John Schumann, Archie Roach (The Tracker), Jane Saunders, the Superjesus, Things of Stone and Wood, Chris Finnen, Cindi Boste, Suzannah Espie, Large Number Twelves, Andrew Kidman, Tim Gaze, Martin Cilia (The Atlantics) and many others. Mick’s passion is recording in a very simple primal way, capturing performance above technology, and presenting an authoritative snapshot of a musical event – no compromise. He has been involved recently with transporting a “world class” studio environment to various locations away from the generic studio environment, and creating a recording environment which is as transparent as possible, but of an audio integrity only found in the most sophisticated set-ups.
In Paul’s unique playing style, the guitar, which has two extra strings (one high, one low) is supported by a metal endpin, similar to that of a cello, which rests on a wooden resonance box. Galbraith’s arrangements and recordings of Bach, Haydn, French Impressionist music and more have been praised around the globe for their “soaring dignity” (Los Angeles Times) and as “exhilarating beyond compare... a joy” (Guitar Review).
Paul believes that “the best instrumental playing strives to imitate the voice in every way possible” and stumbled across playing the guitar after falling in love with the music of Jimi Hendrix, before transferring his passion to the lute.

The acoustic guitar is Paddy’s primary instrument, however he incorporates different stringed instruments into his playing, including (but not limited to) the Turkish oud, saz, cümbüº, Cretan lute, Greek and Irish bouzoukis and mandolin. On its release, Goodbye Tiger was one of the most critically-acclaimed albums any Australian artist had produced. Many Richard Clapton fans continue to regard this dark and melancholic record as his masterpiece. During the early 1980s Richard was mentor to several bands emerging from a vigorous pub-rock scene, in particular INXS, whose album Underneath the Colours he produced. More recently The Great Escape, featuring contributions from members of Cold Chisel and INXS, proved to be a successful project with memorable singles including I Am An Island and The Best Years of Our Life. At the 1999 ARIA Awards Richard was inducted into the Hall Of Fame. He produced an acoustic CD of his early songs in 2006 entitled Rewired and continues to perform on a regular basis. Rob’s inspiration comes from hearing a recording of Andrés Segovia playing Bach in the 1960s, with a guitar of exquisite tone and clarity. It took 40 years before finding the right information to give him the confidence to attempt to build such a guitar. Shortly after completing it, Pavel Steidl, in a rare visit to Adelaide, was able to demonstrate that it had all the tone and power of that Segovia recording. Since then, Slava Grigoryan, Karen Schaupp and UK artists John Mills and Craig Ogden have all confirmed Pavel’s opinion. Rob’s guitars are traditionally built with cedar tops and handmade rosettes, with a typical rosette using between 3,000 to 5,000 tiny pieces of coloured wood to create a pattern. A number-one selling album, sell-out concerts, an ARIA award, plus national radio and television performances have secured Saffire’s place as a classical guitar super-group.
