At just 29, Derek Trucks has forged a name for himself as an innovative guitar virtuoso, and has gained international recognition as an incredible slide and fingerstyle guitarist. Derek is the youngest player to make Rolling Stone’s “100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time” list (he was 24 at the time), and in 2007, Rolling Stone named him one of the New Guitar Gods – his caption on the front cover was “The Jam King”. In 2006 Derek joined guitar legend Eric Clapton’s world tour as a featured soloist in his band, receiving rave critical reviews and wowing audiences. Derek currently divides his time between The Derek Trucks Band, The Allman Brothers Band, and sharing the stage with Clapton.

Ash Grunwald AUS Ash Grunwald’s music is steeped in the Delta blues tradition of the legendary acoustic musicians who proliferated America’s deep South and the giants of electric blues who shaped rock and roll, but it’s his willingness to combine these influences with grooves and sounds common in contemporary music that sets him apart.

Al Slavik AUS/EUROPE Born in Vienna, Al Slavik is regarded as one of Europe’s finest electric bass and Chapman Stick players. However, his most personal work is as a singer/songwriter.

Adrian Belew USA "A wizard of sonic manipulation and texture, Belew has been the guitarist of choice for the art-rock crowd, playing with Frank Zappa, Talking Heads, David Bowie, Laurie Anderson, and Nine Inch Nails" – Rolling Stone Encyclopedia of Rock & Roll It was Frank Zappa who first discovered Adrian Belew playing in a coverband in a club in Nashville. From there, Adrian toured and recorded as member of Zappa’s band before catching the attention of David Bowie and then Talking Heads – both of which he subsequently recorded and toured with. This well sought-after guitarist is perhaps best known for his work as a member of the band King Crimson from 1981 to present. In addition to a healthy solo career, in which he has released over nine of his own albums, Adrian is also well-regarded for his contributions to numerous other artists’ recordings. Just a handful of these session credits include albums by Nine Inch Nails, Peter Wolf, Mike Oldfield, Tori Amos, Paul Simon (his landmark 1986 album Graceland), Cyndi Lauper, the Crash Test Dummies, and William Shatner. Across his career, Adrian has received a swag of awards including the CAMMY (Cincinnati’s Entertainment Awards) lifetime achievement award, and made the top 100 Greatest Progressive Artists list. Adrian makes the list at least twice, in different capacities: #1 with King Crimson, #17 with Talking Heads, and #66 as Adrian Belew (solo).

In 1995, he moved to London and soon became well known and highly respected in the English music scene. Over the next decade he worked with some of the UK´s best musicians and producers in the pop, rock and jazz genres. In a career spanning more than 20 years Al has shared the studio and stage with many well-known international acts, most recently Adrian Belew. Al is now based in Australia and has released his third album (second solo CD) The Secret One. An all-star line-up on The Secret One features guitarists Gus Isidore (Seal, Peter Gabriel), Dominic Miller (Sting, Phil Collins), Bobby Tench (Jeff Beck, Van Morrison), Slava Grigoryan and drummer Christian Eigner (Depeche Mode), among others. The album is a timeless mix of energy and superb musicianship.

Andy Salvanos AUS Swedish-born Andy Salvanos has worked as a session musician in Los Angeles, studied bass with renowned teachers like Jeff Berlin and Gary Willis, and performed The Tracker soundtrack with Archie Roach. After a self-imposed absence from professional music, Andy re-emerged in 2007 with the instrumental album Fragments featuring a hybrid bass/guitar instrument known as the Chapman Stick. Taking to the streets of Adelaide as a busker, he quickly established himself as a sought-after solo performer of highly original music, with a mellow sound which draws comparisons to the melodic guitar work of Mark Knopfler. His second release of 2007, Closer, continued Andy’s simple but effective use of “the stick”, incorporating elements of classical guitar, Latin, folk and instrumental pop.

Backsliders AUS

Angry Anderson AUS Gary (Angry) Anderson first came to the attention of Australian rock music fans as the singer with Buster Brown before finding fame with Rose Tattoo. Seen as pioneers of heavy rock music in Australia, Rose Tattoo’s ‘bad boy’ antics also got them wide-spread attention. Bands such as Guns’n’Roses have credited their exisitence to the influence of Rose Tattoo. In 1986 Angry had the biggest hit record of his career with Suddenly. When it was chosen as the song for the Neighbours TV show wedding of Kylie Minogue and Jason Donovan, it catapulted to the top of the Australian charts. Angry landed the role of Herod in the record-breaking Jesus Christ Superstar – The Musical in 1992. During 1993 Angry and Rose Tattoo reformed at the request of Guns ‘N Roses. In 2008 Rose Tattoo toured with Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Kiss, Slayer and Motorhead, performing at many of Europe’s largest Festivals. The band was inducted into the Australian Hall of Fame in 1996. Angry is also recognised as a champion of children, highlighting the plight of and raising money for disadvantaged and sick children. For his work, Angry has received awards such as the Advance Australia Award, Australian Medal A.M. and the Special Merit Advance Australia Award. “Through the years… Angry has shocked, rocked, amused and entertained us all” Glenn A Baker.

Australian blues group Backsliders are leaders and virtual pioneers in their own genre. As a three piece, they can lift the roof off any venue, moving from in-your-face ‘amped up’ original blues to all-acoustic, unplugged ‘way down south’ delta blues. These guys have been writing, recording and performing acoustic-based blues for 20 years, and media celebrity Doug Mulray describes them as ‘the best acoustic blues band in the country’. Guitarist, vocalist and songwriter Dom Turner specialises in bottle-neck slide guitar using resonator as well as 6 and 12 string guitars. Dom has toured as a solo artist in the USA, playing Augusta Blues week in West Virginia, and touring to Mexico with US blues greats Del Ray and Steve James. Drum and percussion virtuoso Rob Hirst (Midnight Oil, Ghostwriters, Hirst & Greene, Angry Tradesmen) joined Backsliders in 2000. Backsliders are regular headliners at major Australian festivals including 13 years at the East Coast Blues and Roots Festival. Their recent album Left Field Holler is an eclectic mix of hard hitting, frenetic new blues anthems mixed with poignant ballads, again taking the band to new limits. Cal Williams Jr & The Hushes Aus

Ash has built a substantial following, performing regularly at live venues around the country and at major festivals at Byron Bay, Port Fairy, Falls, Apollo Bay, Fremantle, Cockatoo Island and Margaret River. A soulful singer and guitar player, Ash has won countless awards. His debut release, Introducing … Ash Grunwald, won him two Australian Blues awards for Male Vocalist Of The Year and Best New Talent, the MBAS’ Blues Performer Of The Year, and saw him reach the final of the International Blues Performer Of The Year in Memphis. His follow-up album I Don’t Believe saw him score an ARIA nomination for Best Blues and Roots album, as did his Live At The Corner album (this album also secured him the Australian Blues award’s Album Of The Year). “Ash Grunwald is a legend. Whatever it is, he’s got it.” – Db Magazine

Bill Chambers AUS There is much more to Bill Chambers than “just being Kasey’s dad”. The patriarch of the Chambers clan is considered by some to be Australia’s premier alt-country guitarist and is in high demand as a session musician. He can be a master of delicate picking on Dobro or Lap Steel and a demon on Slide. Amid producing albums for the likes of Catherine Britt, Audrey Auld, Becky Willis (co-produced with Kasey) and the Dead Ringer Band, Bill has still found time to write songs for both his albums: the ARIA nominated Sleeping With The Blues; and his recent Frozen Ground, which covers different styles from classic country to blues, rock and points in between. “(Frozen Ground is) a fine collection of country blues songs with dirt under their fingernails… the album is reminiscent of Daniel Lanois’ eerily spacious work; all elongated guitar phrases, shuffling drums and ambient rumbling, and the combined effect is as seductive as hell.” – The Sydney Magazine

Buzz Bidstrup AUS Adelaide born Graham “Buzz” Bidstrup began his involvement with the Australian music industry as a 14 year old drummer in the now legendary Fahrenheit 451. From 1976 to ’81 he was a member of The Angels where he played drums on the band’s first four albums and toured Australia, Europe and the USA and co wrote and co produced the chart topping hit No Secrets. In 1981 he left The Angels and was in demand as a session player, playing drums, and percussion and /or keyboards and guitar on many hit records including Mondo Rock’s Chemistry, Australian Crawl’s Reckless, Richard Clapton’s’ Solidarity, Cold Chisel’s 20th Century and Jimmy Barnes’ No second prize. He also produced and/or engineered many tracks for young bands including The Hoodoo Gurus, INXS, The Riptides and The Numbers and in 1982 co-founded Aussie rock “supergroup” The Party Boys. To date Buzz has produced over 50 albums, some of his most successful being the debut releases from Nathan Cavaleri, Diana Anaid and GANGgajang. He also managed these artists, and in 1999 became manager for Australian Indigenous entertainer Jimmy Little. Buzz has now ventured into event management with the JLF Rock the Foundation concerts and the Bon Scott Celebration concerts held in Perth in 2007/8. Buzz is Music Director for AC/DC: We Salute You.

Dave Evans AUS Born in Wales, Dave Evans is the original singer and founding member of AC/DC, which he formed with Malcolm and Angus Young, Colin Burgess and Larry van Kriedt. Malcolm and Angus’ sisterin-law Sandra suggested the name AC/ DC to signify power and energy and AC/ DC’s first gig was at Sydney’s Chequers Nightclub on New Year’s Eve 1973. AC/DC soon recorded their first single (Can I Sit Next To You Girl b/w Rocking In The Parlour), Angus adopted his famous schoolboy uniform, and AC/DC undertook a gruelling national tour playing to packed houses. After a year with AC/DC, Dave went on to perform with hard rock outfit Rabbit, releasing two albums and undertaking a three-month national tour, as well as 1980’s bands Dave Evans & Hot Cockerel and Dave Evans & Thunder Down Under. He has released two solo albums: A Hell Of A Night from the 2000 memorial gig on the 20th anniversary of Bon Scott’s death with tribute band Thunderstruck; and rock album Sinner recorded in 2006, with the Sinner track Sold My Soul To Rock n Roll nominated at the 2007 LA Music Awards. Dave currently tours with his band Dave Evans and The Badasses.

Derek Trucks began his musical career at the age of nine when he picked up a five dollar acoustic guitar at a yard sale. That seemingly inconsequential purchase changed his life. After learning what he could from his father and a family friend, Derek began playing with other musicians around town. He achieved his first paying gig at age 11 and began touring – with his father acting as road manager/chaperone. He soon became such an accomplished slide guitarist that he was invited to record and tour with multi-platinum selling blues-rock band The Allman Brothers Band as a guest artist. He became a full member of this band in 1999. In 1994 Derek started The Derek Trucks Band. What had begun as a weekend activity had quickly became a life’s pursuit, and would eventually result in Derek being the youngest player to make Rolling Stone’s “100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time” list. In 2006 Trucks was asked to join guitar legend Eric Clapton’s world tour as a featured soloist in his band, a tour extending into 2007 and supported by rave critical reviews globally. It was a busy year for Derek as he found himself playing in three bands in 17 countries. Rolling Stone named him one of the New Guitar Gods in 2007 – his caption on the front cover was “The Jam King”. On the road over 300 days a year, Trucks currently divides his time between The Derek Trucks Band, The Allman Brothers Band, and sharing the stage with Clapton.

A favourite and unique performer at festivals and events, both solo and with her band, Diana has shared stages with John Butler, Xavier Rudd and Pete Murray as well as rocking crowds with Grinspoon, Powderfinger and Frenzal Rhomb. She wears the crown of being the first acoustic chick to ever play the Vans Warped punk rock festival.

The band’s mission has been to assemble a group of musicians that share a passion for improvisation and musical exploration – and the result is an undeniable chemistry between the band members, due to heavy touring and fearless improvisation. As a multiple winner of every major performance and recording award in the Australian blues scene, in 2003 Fiona competed in the world’s premier showcase for emerging blues talent, the Blues Foundation’s International Blues Challenge. She became the first Australian and the first woman ever to win this prestigious event. Hoodoo Gurus AUS Guy Pratt UK Guy Pratt’s bass career features the who’s who of the music industry. There’s his tour with Icehouse at the of 19; performances with the likes of David Bowie, Robert Palmer, Bryan Ferry and Womack & Womack soon after; and then being thrust into the global premier league of bassists when David Gilmour asked him to play for Pink Floyd. For two and a half decades the Hoodoo Gurus have been one of the most inventive, lyrically smart and exciting rock’n’roll bands Australia has ever produced. Along the way they’ve influenced an entire generation of bands which explains why You Am I, The Living End, Dallas Crane, Grinspoon and many others queued up a few years ago to pay tribute to the band’s 1984 debut album, Stoneage Romeos. Their second album Mars Needs Guitars sent the Gurus career skyrocketing and they have since toured internationally dozens of times, including repeated sell-outs at 10,000 capacity venues in Brazil. From 1987 to 1997 albums kept coming, including Blow Your Cool, Magnum Cum Louder, Kinky, Crank and Blue Cave, plus two double CD compilations. A revitalised Hoodoo Gurus released Mach Schau in 2004 and hit the road again. Playing to an audience comprising long-term fans and a new generation, they enjoyed headlining spots at Homebake and The Big Day Out. The NRL used the re-worked What’s My Scene (That’s My Team) as their promotional theme for the past five years, with the band performing live at the 2006 and 2007 NRL Grand Finals. In 2007 the Hoodoo Gurus were one of the highlights at the SXSW Music Festival in Austin, Texas. The Hoodoo Gurus remain as relevant and impassioned about their distinctive brand of rock’n’roll now as ever, witnessed by their induction into the Australian Music Hall of Fame in August 2007 and their 'find of the festival' accolade at the 2008 Glastonbury Festival.

GT Stringer AUS Grinspoon AUS Grinspoon came to prominence when in 1995 they were crowned winners of Triple J’s very first ‘Unearthed’.They quickly become favourites across the country and the band’s winning track Sickfest went on to make Triple J’s Hottest 100 for that year – the first of countless Grinspoon songs to be voted into the Hottest 100 since then. The single Chemical Heart came second in the 2002 Hottest 100 and ensured mainstream recognition. Grinspoon’s sound has been described as everything from heavy rock, grunge, alternative metal and even slight pop on occasions. Four out of the band’s five albums have been top five hits in Australia and their debut album, 1998’s Guide to Better Living, peaked at #11. In 2005 Grinspoon won their first ARIA award for Rock Album of the Year for Thrills, Kills and Sunday Pills.Their most recent release Alibis & Other Lies entered ARIA charts at #2. Since 1995 Grinspoon have toured extensively throughout Australia and the United States alongside a myriad of bands including Creed, Lit, Godsmack, Silverchair, Eminem, Blink 182, Pennywise, 28 Days and The Butterfly Effect. Founding members Jim Redgate and Trevor Ramsay formed GT Stringer after a request was made by Australian publisher Steve Mcparland for some earlier recorded material from the infamous Adelaide surf act, The Luau. As no such recordings were in existence, GT Stringer was formed to generate original surf inspired instrumental tracks. Almost 10 years on and 5 full length CDs later, GT Stringer have become one of Australia’s leading surf instrumental outfits. Appearances in film (The Summer of Love in 2002) and the use of the band’s tunes in numerous soundtracks have seen a large back catalogue develop. The band comprises guitar, bass, drums, and sax among a range of eclectic instruments and electronic effects. Jean-Félix Lalanne FRANCE Instrumentalist, composer, conductor, arranger and producer, Jean-Félix Lalanne is considered one of the most talented and prolific French guitarists of his generation. From a young age he was described as a “prodigy of the guitar”. Jean-Félix acquired his first guitar at age 11 and gave his first solo concert less than a year later. The following year he performed on stage with Marcel Dadi who became his mentor. At 17 Jean-Félix undertook his first musical project: a solo album in which he transcribed the Nocturnes, Valses and Polonaises of Chopin. He was just 20 when he wrote his first symphony, the Symphonie Romantique. This was followed by several other concertos and symphonic pieces of which several have been played at festivals in Europe and the United States. Since 1979 Jean-Félix has recorded 23 albums. Autour de la guitare (Around The Guitar) is one of Lalanne’s greatest adventures in music, in which numerous artists perform together to honour the guitar. This has become an annual event in France, selling-out performances at the Olympia and the Casino de Paris.

Jimmy Little AUS Jeff Lang AUS Adelaide International Guitar Festival is delighted to bring Jeff Lang back this year after his extensive involvement as Artist In Residence in the inaugural festival in 2007. Jeff has earned worldwide acclaim as a virtuosic guitarist, a dynamic songwriter and a startlingly unique live performer. With a back catalogue of 13 studio albums, he has been featured at major festivals, pubs, clubs, arts centres and venues internationally for the past decade. Blending rock, roots, folk, blues, ballads, instrumentals, improvisation and a devastatingly high level of musicality, Jeff has received numerous awards, the most outstanding of which are his six ARIA award nominations as well as his ARIA win in 2002. Jeff’s hugely popular live performances see him working without a set list, allowing the unique energy in each night to shape the songs. With a prolific and diverse musical palette, he has a talent for crafting songs as novellas – rich with depth and vision, yet with an open breath for individual interpretation.

Jimmy Little began entertaining Australians in 1956, working as a singer and actor before his 1963 chart-topping hit Royal Telephone saw him named 1964 Australian Pop Star of the Year. Over the next thirty years Jimmy became widely acknowledged as one of Australia’s premier entertainers, releasing several country, pop and rock albums before being elevated to the Tamworth Roll of Renown in 1994. In 1999 he was inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame with his gold selling album Messenger voted “Adult Contemporary Album of the Year.” Jimmy has spent over twenty years as an indigenous ambassador for youth and education. A kidney transplant recipient, in 2006 he founded the Jimmy Little Foundation, which assists Indigenous Australians living with renal disease. Besides holding an Order of Australia, three honorary doctorates and several MO awards, Jimmy has been the subject of an ABC TV documentary and was named a National Trust National Living Treasure.

Joseph Tawadros Trio AUS The Joseph Tawadros Trio is comprised of brothers Joseph Tawadros on oud, James Tawadros on req’ (Egyptian tamborine), and Ben Rodgers on bass. The trio performs compositions based on the Egyptian Maqam system (a melodic modal system) composed by Joseph and they bring an exciting performance dynamic and youthful freshness to the stage. A student of Mohamed Youssef (renowned oud player and jazz pianist), Joseph’s impressive career features collaborations with an extraordinary list of international artists from many diverse musical and cultural backgrounds. This exposure is particularly evident in his unique style of composition and performance. Joseph has performed at some of the world’s most prestigious venues, composed for film and theatre, and wowed audiences at WOMADelaide both in 2004 and 2008. Mason Rack Band AUS From the first time Gold Coast songwriter/performer Mason Rack lets loose, to the moment he relinquishes his guitar, his audience is spellbound. Whether it’s his forceful renditions, his impromptu all-in drum-athons with the audience or his musical duels with his drummer, Mason is a star rising. Mason is a familiar face at a host of venues and festivals up and down the east coast, and has notched up a number of prestigious achievements such as scoring in the Top 5 for Blues at the Music Oz Awards, and being dubbed “the best new blues/roots act ever seen” at the Toyota National Gympie Muster. His exciting Weissenborn lap slide guitar becomes an extension of himself, as Mason pours out tunes influenced by blues, southern stop swamp, classic rock and alternative music. Roughly twelve years ago Matt Walker and Ashley Davies first met and started playing impromptu shows. Matt’s resonating acoustic, slide and lap steel blazes combined with the tuneful physicality of Ashley’s drumming have ensured they are etched firmly onto the Australian music map. Magic Dirt/Adalita Srsen Mia Dyson AUS Mia’s revolution began with the 2005 ARIA Award for Best Blues and Roots Album for her second album, Parking Lots (her debut, Cold Water, had been nominated in 2003). Her profile was also boosted by a song on the soundtrack to the acclaimed Australian feature film, Look Both Ways, and an invitation to join Deborah Conway’s collaborative singer-songwriters’ roadshow, Broad. Opening for Bonnie Raitt on a tour of Australia was a more personal affirmation of Mia’s path. In 2006 and 2007, Mia toured the USA and Canada, playing Jim Dyson guitars, (her father being a notable luthier). Mia joined Frank Zappa’s band The Mothers of Invention on stage at the Winnipeg Folk Festival, as well as playing on stages at a raft of festivals across the US & Canada. Supporting Ani DiFranco in New York’s Central Park, was another touring high point for Mia. With an extraordinary depth of passion in her voice, a soulful feel for electric and lap slide guitars, maturity of song-writing and rare magnetism as a performer, her red carpet arrival onto the music scene was cemented when she supported Eric Clapton during his Australian tour in 2007. AUS Australian rock band Magic Dirt has been blasting ear drums at pubs and festivals across Australia for many years. Three gigs into their budding career, Magic Dirt were invited to support the likes of Sonic Youth, Beck, Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Dinosaur Jr and Pavement. They have since supported Silverchair, Powderfinger and Jebediah, as well as performing at several Australian Big Day Out’s. Their new album Girl was released in July, supported by the biggest national tour of their entire career performing 35 shows over 5 months. Girl roars out of the blocks with all the sonic adventure Magic Dirt are notorious for, with the first single Romy on rotation at Triple J. Song-writer, lead singer and guitarist Adalita Srsen was the first female to grace the cover of Australian Guitar Magazine. She has been composing for over 14 years and has collaborated with many Australian artists, often as guest vocalist. The Adelaide International Guitar Festival is excited to have Adalilta return in 2008 after her spine-tingling version of Star Spangled Banner and All Along The Watchtower with Midnight Oil guitarist Jim Moginie in last year’s festival (during Kiss The Sky: A Tribute to the Music of Jimi Hendrix).

Mongrels of Passion (Vince Lovegrove & Tim Gaze) AUS Mongrels of Passion are Tim Gaze and Vince Lovegrove. Both are stalwarts of Australian music and have been pivotal, intimate and pro-active associates of many Australian artists including: Rose Tattoo, Jimmy Barnes, Gyan, Jon Lord, Valentines, Stevie Wright, Divinyls, Cold Chisel, Bon Scott, AC/DC, Ian Moss, Chrissie Amphlett, Mark McEntee, and many more. Tim is one of the nation’s most respected guitar players and teachers, having performed with a variety of groups and artists and with the Brisbane Symphony Orchestra in a tribute to Australian surf music. He has an independent recording career with various blues projects, and recently released a double anthology CD. Vince managed the early careers of Cold Chisel, Bon Scott and AC/DC in Adelaide, the Divinyls in the US and Jimmy Barnes in Europe. After mentoring major acts, producing documentaries and writing books, Vince has returned to his first love - writing and performing music. Both are graduates of the University of the Arts in Berlin, with Oliver also holding a degree from the Academy of Music and Theatre in Leipzig. Numerous radio and television recordings, master classes, festival appearances and concerts across Europe, Asia and Australia have brought them critical acclaim. To date these two exceptionally versatile musicians have released 16 recordings through numerous record labels. Their latest CD Winter Journey featuring Ludger Vollmer’s instrumental arrangement of Franz Schubert’s Winterreise with Richard Yongjae O’Neill (viola) was the No. 1 of the South Korean Classical charts for 3 months with over 40,000 copies sold in the last quarter of 2007. Lee Song-Ou currently teaches at the Korean National University of Arts in Seoul and is Guest Professor at the Shenyang Art University in China. The Party Boys were “born” in 1982 when Mondo Rock bassist Paul Christie assembled a group of Australia’s most recognised rock players for a “fun band” that initially performed only five gigs! They recorded the 5th gig featuring singer James Reyne and the resulting live LP achieved gold sales. The band went on to perform continually over the next decade with a revolving door of local and overseas musicians through the ranks peaking in the late 80’s with a chart topping rendition of He’s gonna step on you again sung by Adelaide’s own John ‘Swanee” Swan. The Party Boys reformed for the 2007/8 Bon Scott Celebration concerts, held to raise money for a statue of Bon Scott in Fremantle WA while also making significant donations to charities. Bon Scott concert Music Director Graham ”Buzz” Bidstrup (drummer of The Angels and GANGgajang), fellow founding Party Boys guitar maestro Kevin Borich, and Paul Christie were joined on-stage by many other musicians in a power-packed set of Bon era AC/DC classics.These musicians included guitarist Randall Waller (Shania Twain band), Dave Evans (the original singer with AC/DC) Mark Evans (Ex bass player with AC/DC), Vince Lovegrove and Rose Tattoo’s ever popular Angry Anderson. The Party Boys line-up in AC/DC: We Salute You will again feature these legendary rockers, while the addition of Swanee, Dave Tice (original Buffalo front man) and a welcome return of ex Easybeats front man Stevie Wright, will provide a rare treat for Adelaide’s rock lovers. Members of The Party Boys will also join some of the other featured artists on stage at the tribute concert saluting the music and achievements of undoubtedly Australia’s most successful rock and roll export: AC/DC.

His career started when he played fiddle, guitar and accordion in Slim Dusty’s Travelling Country Band. A regular solo spot on Slim’s show allowed Peter to showcase the lighter side of his talent leading to the release of the Petrol Head Fly album in 2000. His latest album Picture In A Frame is an eclectic mix of material, showing Peter to be a skilled commentator and story-teller. Peter’s quirky and comical side has received much attention in 2008 with his song Sort of, Dunno, Nothin. This parody about a teenager’s notorious inability to answer any question with more than two words has been played on Rage, Sunrise, Today Show, 60 Minutes, The Night Cap and on radio stations across the country. Peter wrote a modified version of this song for television program Big Brother this year, inspiring a new legion of fans.

Rob Sawyer reflects a diverse scope of musical inspiration in his song writing from a raw organic blend of punk folk and hillbilly reggae through to foot stomping blues. His compelling sound, teamed with the wellworn fret board of a much-loved guitar, illustrates the passion of an eloquent performer. In 2003, Rob won the Frankston Guitar Festival Young Guitarist of the Year, the PBS Songwriter of the Year, and the Apollo Bay Young Musician Award. He quickly shot to the attention of touring artists, picking up several international touring supports, including a tour with visiting US artist Donavon Frankenreiter. Rob has just completed his third European tour. In 2008 Rob fulfilled an adventurous ambition: a musical tour by bicycle. The “On Ya Bike Tour” saw Rob load up his bike with guitar and tent and ride 4,600 kms from Melbourne to Perth. Performing shows along the way, and crossing the desert during a heat wave, Rob’s intense and relentless tour was an experience never to be forgotten.

Encompassing three generations of artists over time, the quartet now comprises Pepe, Celin, Celin’s son Celino, and Angel’s son Lito. To have so many virtuosi of the same instrument in one family is unique in the musical performance world, and in the realm of the classical guitar it is absolutely without precedent. The Romeros have enjoyed appearances with virtually every major symphony orchestra in the US including Boston, Chicago, Philadelphia, Los Angeles and San Francisco, among others. The family has been invited to the White House, appeared at the Vatican in a special concert for His Holiness Pope John Paul II, and in 1986 they performed for His Royal Highness Prince Charles, Prince of Wales. Shihad NZ Shihad is an alternative rock and metal band from Wellington, New Zealand, formed in 1988 by school friends Jon Toogood and Tom Larkin and joined later by Phil Knight and Karl Kippenberger. The band has produced three #1 studio albums and four top ten singles in NZ. “Shihad” is a reference from the 1984 David Lynch film, Dune. The band was temporarily re-named “Remote” and later “Pacifier” following the September 11 terrorist attacks and the similarity between the band’s name and the Arabic word “jihad”; however in 2004 they opted to return to the original name. Shihad have been regulars on the Australian and New Zealand tour circuit over the past twelve years including many festivals such as Splendour In The Grass, and Big Day Out in Australia and New Zealand. They supported Evanescence during their world tour in 2006/07, toured with The Datsuns in New Zealand, plus held a twenty-eight date “One Will Hear The Tour” of Australia’s East Coast in February and March. A veritable institution in classical music, The Romeros Guitar Quartet has dazzled audiences and won the raves of reviewers around the world. Founder Celedonio Romero was a renowned soloist in Spain, immigrating with his family to the United States in 1957. As each of his sons reached the age of two or three, they began learning the guitar from their father, leading him (with his sons Celin, Pepe and Angel) to found the internationally renowned ensemble known to millions as “The Royal Family of the Guitar”. After Celedonio passed away in 1996, his sons and grandsons vowed to continue his legacy.

Rockin’ Rob Riley AUS Recognised as a mighty fine guitarist, mandolin player and pedal steel player, Rockin’ Rob Riley is perhaps best known as the guitarist from Rose Tattoo. After supporting Sherbert on their Photoplay tour in the early 70s he joined “the tatts” from London on their European tour, penning their hits We can’t be Beaten and Scarred for Life. In the early 80s Rob toured nationally with The Party Boys before joining Jimmy Barnes’ on the Working Class Man album tour. A further evolution in his musical career saw Rockin’ Rob form Adelaide bands, The Mega Boys and The Gems, whilst his current music project is with country-rock outfit David Blight & The Flyers. Earlier this year Rob was guest guitarist with The Screaming Jets for their Adelaide gig.

Sara Storer AUS At the 2004 Tamworth Country Music Festival Sara Storer took home a record seven Golden Guitars for her second album Beautiful Circle. The album was a hit with fans, industry insiders and critics, and to all who heard her there was little doubt that here was a unique talent. Her fourth album Silver Skies is filled with tales of lives and loves of those on the land but there is a much broader musical palette that shows her to be a contemporary of Missy Higgins and The Waifs as much as her country comrades. Adelaide indie band, The Shiny Brights, was born in early 2008 in the scintillating environs of a riverside warehouse stocking used whitegoods. Their soon to be released debut EP Let’s Not and Say We Did was a culmination of an exciting year for the band. In their short career they’ve already become buddies with Sir Bob as the only unsigned act on the Make Poverty History DVD, supported some of the hottest upcoming acts like The Wombats, The Galvatrons, Dukes Of Windsor and Scientists Of Modern Music and been finalists in the Australian National Campus Band Competition. Slava & Leonard Grigoryan AUS After immigrating to Australia from Kazakhstan at age 5, Slava Grigoryan went on to become a major prize-winner at the Tokyo International Classical Guitar Competition, with an extensive and subsequent list of accolades including numerous ARIA awards (Best Classical Album); producer for albums that have gone straight to number one on the classical charts; and in 1998 was named Young Australian of the Year for the Arts. Slava has toured extensively across the globe, performing at many of the biggest national and international festivals and with many of the world’s leading orchestras. Leonard Grigoryan started performing publicly at the age of 8. Having always played with his brother Slava, in 2001, Leonard was the only guest artist on Slava’s ARIA award winning album, Sonatas and Fantasies. Like Slava, Leonard has toured extensively, performing in festivals and with orchestras both nationally and internationally. He has dedicated himself to both the classical and jazz genres and is an active arranger and composer. Steve Hunter has been an internationally renowned electric bass virtuoso and prolific composer for many years. He has released eight albums and has played and/or recorded with an impressively long list of musicians from all over the world. He is also an award winning composer with over one hundred of his compositions released both on his own and other artists’ albums.

Troy Cassar-Daley has earned the reputation as one of Australia’s finest country performers, honing his craft over 20 years and 6 studio albums and culminating in an award for 2007 Male Artist of the Year at the Country Music Awards. It’s the 6th time he has taken this award, making him the most awarded male artist in the history of the Golden Guitars.

Steve’s career highlights include performing with two of his early idols Billy Cobham and Chick Corea, as well as with US drummer/ composer Bobby Previte in Previte’s Bitches Brew Project and ongoing collaborations with many of Asia’s finest musicians. More recently Steve spent nine months living in Spain where he wrote a suite of twenty pieces for solo bass that he’s scheduled to record in 2010.

In the last two years he has also won an ARIA, toured the US with Tommy Emmanuel, been awarded Entertainer of the Year for the 5th time (Country Music Awards), performed on Standing On The Outside – The Songs Of Cold Chisel, and starred in the TV series It Takes Two.

William is one of Australia’s leading didjeridu players and composers. At just 17 years of age, he played his first classical concert with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra. Since that time he has collaborated and performed with an impressive list of artists and composers both nationally and internationally. Many composers have composed with William in mind, or re-arranged compositions to include didjeridu.

Stevie Wright AUS Former Easybeats frontman Stevie Wright is fondly regarded as Australia’s first international pop star, with The Easybeats widely recognised as the greatest Australian pop band of the sixties. The group’s shows were renowned as much for Wright’s acrobatic backflips and energetic stage performances, as the songs themselves. Stevie co-wrote many of the the Easybeats’ hits including Sorry and I’ll Make You Happy, and was vocalist on their biggest hit Friday On My Mind, which, in 2001, was voted the Best Australian Song of All Time and made the Top 20 in both the UK and the US. He also wrote the epic song Evie, which he is perhaps best known for. In 2002 Stevie performed as part of the all-star Long Way To The Top national concert tour. His biography, Hard Road, was published in 2004.

Swanee AUS John Swan (aka Swanee) is a true legend of Australian rock music who has enjoyed a string of hit singles. After arriving in Adelaide from Glasgow in 1961 with his family (including younger brother Jimmy Barnes), he was soon playing in local bands by the age of 14 and took Bon Scott’s place in the blues-rock band Fraternity. After years as a pub-rock road warrior, he launched his own band (also known as Swanee) and released a debut album with a series of hit singles. In 1987 he joined The Party Boys and enjoyed a #1 hit with He’s Gonna Step On You and a multi-platinum, self-titled album. John recorded his new album Have A Little Faith in 2007, which he considers his best work to date. The new record features many of Nashville’s finest players working through a selection of John’s new songs, some favourite tunes and some updated versions of his biggest hits. Mark Evans is the bass player from the original and classic AC/DC line up (featuring his best mate Bon Scott). This period of the band yielded the landmark albums High Voltage, Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap, TNT, and Let There Be Rock, including the massive hits Jailbreak, Baby Please Don’t Go and It’s A Long Way To The Top. Dave Tice’s musical history began in the early 70’s as front man and song-writer for Australian heavy rock pioneers Buffalo. Through Buffalo he recorded five albums and toured with international acts including Black Sabbath, Slade, Status Quo, and Ritchie Blackmore’s Rainbow. Dave then returned to his homeland, England, to join The Count Bishops, writing many of their songs and performing to sell-out houses across Great Britain and Europe. His song-writing skills were brought to attention when he co-wrote album material for Dr Feelgood with their legendary guitarist Johnny Guitar. Dave and Mark are two seasoned musicians who have evolved both separately and together to form the hard-edged acoustic duo Tice & Evans. Travis Sinclair AUS Since entering the world of country music, Victorian singer/songwriter/truck driver Travis Sinclair has had an amazing few years. Described as the “quiet achiever of country music”, Travis’s highly successful debut album Rhythm of the Highway earned him an Australian record of ten consecutive Top Ten singles, as well as collecting a host of awards along the way such as a 2003 Golden Guitar for Best New Talent. His duet with Lee Kernaghan I’m From The Country spent three weeks in the top spot on the country charts. His 2005 follow-up album Rush earned him an APRA nomination two years in a row and many more accolades, making Travis one of Australia’s most successful country music artists. Being brought up with trucks has been a huge part of Travis’s life. His first-hand knowledge of the trucking industry has been incorporated into his albums, but he also sings of the experiences and emotions told, felt and lived by others.

William has also performed around the world at festivals and with leading orchestras, including with the Brooklyn Philharmonic Orchestra, Reno Chamber Orchestra, Jena Philharmonic, and even a tour to Germany with the Queensland Ballet. Xavier Rudd AUS Wulfin Lieske, Duo Lointain (Rebecca Harris, Wulfin Lieske) GERMANY / AUSTRALIA German guitarist/composer Wulfin Lieske made his professional debut at the age of 14 and is well-known for revealing new insights into the traditional guitar repertoire. He has worked with musicians such as Gidon Kremer, Astor Piazzolla and Juan José Mosalini, and accompanied and composed for the Hilliard Ensemble. Wulfin was the first artist to record a CD using an instrument created by legendary luthier Antonio de Torres, and in 2003 he completed LUXOR Guitar Concerto for amplified guitar, drums, and string orchestra. Wulfin met Australian cellist Rebecca Harris at the 2005 Darwin International Guitar Festival where both were performing as soloists. Here they also met didjeridu artist William Barton, with a direct result being the formation of Duo Lointain and subsequent collaborations between Wulfin and William. Duo Lointain made its debut in 2006 for the Musica Viva Ménage series in Adelaide, followed by a large scale performance in a Qantas hangar at the Darwin Festival. Rebecca is principal cellist of the Darwin Symphony Orchestra and performs in Darwin based rock band worldfly. Her many accomplishments include performing with the Adelaide and Tasmanian Symphony Orchestras, plus Indonesia’s only symphony orchestra in Surabaya.

A one-man-band/multi-instrumentalist who plays guitars, Yidaki’s (didjeridus), Weissenborn slide guitars, stomp boxes, djembes, harmonica, and a bunch of different percussion and drums, Xavier’s talent is unmistakable. On stage he impressively performs guitar, didjeridu and percussion simultaneously, surrounded by various instruments and singing from behind a stand holding three Yidaki’s (didjeridu of different keys). Xavier’s albums Solace and Food in the Belly both reached platinum sales in Australia. Food In The Belly earned him an ARIA nomination for Best Blues And Roots Album, as did his next release, White Moth. White Moth realised Xavier’s goal of combining the acoustic warmth offered by a studio with the adrenalin of the stage. Maybe more than any of his previous albums, Xavier’s latest release Dark Shades of Blue is a balance of darkness and light and finds him at his most assertive, heavy and psychedelic. Dusky and cool, the disc’s guitar-driven jams expand on a sound only hinted at on previous releases.
