ARTIST STATEMENT The pomegranate immediately came to mind when I was asked to create an image to represent OzAsia Festival as it is a fruit that has cultural significance in many cultures across Asia. Variously symbolising life, fertility, abundance, prosperity, blood, and death, the pomegranate seemed appropriate to represent a festival that seeds multitudes of theatre, dance, music, art, literature, and cultural events and grows creativity, connections, and ideas. The open pomegranate half reveals its many seeds as well as the seed pods of a flora native to Kaurna land, (colonially known as) Banksia Marginata, with the distinctive spiky leaves of this plant and those of the pomegranate tree fanning above the globe-like fruit. This hybrid offering is a reminder that the festival presents artists from Asia and the Asian diaspora as visitors on, and interacting with, Kaurna land and legacy. QR code

Now in its 15th year, this wonderful festival continues to bring together communities across South Australia in celebration of Asian-Australian artists and culture. This is my first OzAsia Festival as Minister for Arts and I congratulate Artistic Director Annette Shun Wah on a program that reflects a modern-day, culturally diverse Australia. This year’s festival includes a broad and accessible program to appeal to all audiences – from visual arts, performance, events just for families and the crowd favourite, the Lucky Dumping Market, which will once again transform Elder Park into a food lover’s dream! We’re delighted to welcome audiences back to an OzAsia Festival program full of exciting events and experiences for all ages and tastes. Annette Shun Wah’s program is a testament to the resilience and adaptability of the creative community, with new commissions alongside the return of much-loved events. Moon Lantern Trail once again lights up Tarntanya Wama/Pinky Flat, with some brand new lanterns to enjoy in 2022. With support from the South Australian Government through Arts SA, Contemporary Asian Australian Performance Artist Lab also returns, providing a professional development opportunity for South Australianbased artists of Asian heritage. This year, writing and ideas program In Other Words is under the exciting directorship of writer and comedian Jennifer Wong. OzAsia Festival stretches further than Adelaide Festival Centre, from Festival Plaza activations, to long-standing venue collaborator Nexus Arts, and across to the Grote Street Precinct and Her Majesty's Theatre. It was so thrilling to see audiences embrace OzAsia Festival wholeheartedly in 2021, and we are determined to entice you back for another three weeks of conversation, entertainment, delight, and wonder as we explore the connections between Asia and Australia. Those vital connections remain at the heart of this program of contemporary theatre, music, dance, visual arts, comedy, food, and magic! That’s right – actual magic – courtesy of South Korea’s GRUEJARM, who have wowed audiences around the world with their hit show SNAP. I’m equally excited to introduce their compatriots LEENALCHI, whose distinctive mix of pansori and contemporary pop and funk dominated the 2021 Korean Music Awards. Music is an important part of this year’s program. Iconic New York-based Singaporean musical innovator Margaret Leng Tan brings her celebrated work Dragon Ladies Don’t Weep to OzAsia Festival. Bridge of Dreams is a stunning collaboration between Australia’s premier jazz composer Sandy Evans, and India's leading musicians, classical Hindustani singer Shubha Mudgal and tabla player Aneesh Pradhan. In 2021, we unfortunately had to postpone several shows due to COVID-19 restrictions. We’re so pleased to welcome back Maria Tran’s Action Star and Michael Mohammed Ahmad’s The Demon for their OzAsia Festival seasons in 2022. Festival favourite Mindy Meng Wang will perform her deeply personal music and film piece When, and writer and journalist Jane Hutcheon reveals the story that has intrigued her most – that of her mother and her Eurasian family in pre-Communist China in Lost in Shanghai.
OzAsia Festival also joins with State Theatre Company South Australia for their production of Michelle Law’s hilarious hit play, Single Asian Female. I’m delighted to present two dance artists I greatly admire: Dalisa Pigram, performing her powerful piece de resistance Gudirr Gudirr; and Sue Healey with The Long Walk, which transports us to the stunning coastline of Robe. The Moon Lantern Trail returns bigger and better this year, along with a sensational offering of food and music at Lucky Dumpling Market. A bubble tea garden on Festival Plaza adds to the free, family-friendly offerings at this year’s festival. Visual arts exhibitions will fill Adelaide Festival Centre galleries, and we invite you to engage with leading thinkers and writers from Asia and Australia with our writing and ideas program In Other Words, which this year will be curated by Jennifer Wong. In modern-day Sydney, Chinese Australian street fighter Wei draws two detectives – Arab Australian Jihad and his Aboriginal Muslim partner Matthew/Muhammad – on a road trip to Burrangong, the region of the infamous Lambing Flat Riots of 1861, a dark night when violence erupted against Chinese goldminers. Here, they must confront the landscape and its demons to ask themselves: does a curse inhabit a land or its people?

Contemporary Asian Australian Performance (CAAP) Throughout Jane Hutcheon’s adventurous journalism career, the story of her mother Beatrice’s childhood in pre-Communist China has intrigued her more than any other. After visiting Shanghai in 2018, Jane began to search for the truth of her mother’s difficult beginning and found a story of survival. Lost in Shanghai is a tale of an ordinary Eurasian family in extraordinary times, set against a backdrop of fading colonial opulence and looming war. Using projected images from the family archive curated by renowned photographer William Yang, and music composed and performed by Dr Terumi Narushima, Jane narrates her mother’s moving story in her own words. Co-directed by William Yang and Tasnim Hossain, Lost in Shanghai adds to the rich collection of theatrical storytelling works from Contemporary Asian Australian Performance (CAAP), such as Double Delicious, The Backstories, In Between Two, and more.

The guwayi bird calls a warning to signal when the tide is turning – miss the call, and you risk drowning. For thousands of years, this call has guided Aboriginal people of the northwest region of Australia and kept them safe from harm. Equal parts hesitant, restless, resilient, and angry, Gudirr Gudirr calls a warning to a community facing massive industrialisation on traditional lands, loss of language, and major gaps between Indigenous and non-Indigenous wellbeing. Performed by Dalisa Pigram, a Yawuru and Bardi woman with Malay and Filipino heritage, Gudirr Gudirr reaches into Australia’s history and asks important questions: What does it take to decolonise the minds of Aboriginal people? How do we take a broken past, shift through a fragile present, and create a brighter future? In collaboration with Belgian choreographer Koen Augustijnen and artist Vernon Ah Kee, Pigram creates a dance language that captures this moment in time for her people. In When, Chinese Australian musician, composer, and performer Mindy Meng Wang creates a poignant and emotional audio-visual meditation on family, memories, and life in times of great change. With musicians Anita Quayle and Daniel Jenatsch, Mindy shares personal, undisclosed stories between her hometown of Lanzhou, Wuhan and her new home of Melbourne, humanising the profound upheaval that comes from a worldwide pandemic. Lunch on the Riverbank returns for its second year. Join celebrated author and arts journalist Katherine Tamiko Arguile for an afternoon of conversation and food in celebration of the release of her new book Meshi, an exploration of the meals of her childhood. For Katherine, the Japanese food her mother cooked was a portal to a part of her that sometimes felt very far away. Now, as she recreates these meals, Katherine untangles the threads of meaning, memory, and ritual woven through every glistening bowl of rice, every tender slice of sashimi, and each steaming cup of green tea. In Meshi, Katherine reveals the culture and spirit infused into Japanese food.

BUBBLE TEA GARDEN OzAsia Festival’s newest event celebrates a delicacy that’s iconic, refreshing, beloved the world over, and so popular that it has its own national day in its home country! Bubble Tea Garden raises a toast to the phenomenon of bubble tea: the Taiwanese sensation that combines tea with milk or fruit flavouring and chewy tapioca balls (boba). This year, OzAsia Festival is showcasing all things bubble tea with a two-day event that will take over Festival Plaza, complete with fun activities and exciting new bubble tea flavours exclusive to Bubble Tea Garden. TIANLI ZU Chinese-Australian artist Tianli Zu presents two major installations at OzAsia Festival, featuring in both the Visual Arts program and Moon Lantern Trail. Zu is a multi-award-winning mixed media artist who has presented works around the world in both solo and collaborative exhibitions. A two time Archibald Prize finalist, Zu has been commissioned for exhibitions and works for Vivid Sydney, National Library of Australia, Powerhouse Museum, and Disney. At OzAsia Festival, Tianli Zu will present Gate of Grace, a festival commission for Moon Lantern Trail, as well as A New World on Earth, a moving image work exhibited on Adelaide Festival Centre’s King William Road screens.
A NEW WORLD ON EARTH A New World on Earth is Tianli Zu’s newest video animation created from her signature papercuts, featuring a soundtrack by Australian composer Andrew Zhou. A New World on Earth creates connections and renews the relationships between human kind and nature. It comprises a metaphorical procession with 10 phases of transformation between mysterious shadow and peculiar light, intertwined with contradictions, growth, decline, rebirth, and the cosmos. 48
A New World on Earth reveals the traces of handmade, the ephemeral, and emotions. This digital work provides viewers with a meditative experience, to wander, to contemplate, to regain energy, and to imagine a new world that is sustainable for our planet. GATE OF GRACE Tianli Zu lights your way with Gate of Grace, the new entrance to the Moon Lantern Trail. Gate of Grace carves out the forms of the sun, the moon, plants and fruits, streams of water, and other aspects of the natural world. Encouraging people to look around them at the beauty of nature, Gate of Grace’s design includes wattle, banksia, eucalyptus, and other iconic Australian natives, while also exploring Asian culture through images of pomegranates, peaches, and mandarins.

As part of OzAsia Festival 2022, several Asian and Asian Australian musicians and visual artists have created exhibitions and performances examining women at work as a response to 9 TO 5 THE MUSICAL, playing in Festival Theatre throughout October.

Exploring ideas such as the inequitable division of labour across gender and racial divides, the fight for education and employment, and the limitations of both the glass ceiling and the bamboo ceiling, these incredible artists contemplate the cross-section between contemporary and ‘traditional’ womanhood.

BATIK SANGIRAN Sih Natalia Sukmi
In the World Heritage area of Sangiran, Indonesia, the art of batik represents community values, knowledge, culture, and philosophy. A prehistoric, mythical place, Sangiran’s batik artisans (particularly women artisans) preserve this history, culture, and collective memory in motifs designed and drawn by men. Sih Natalia Sukmi led a team of thirteen researchers to create connections with ten women batik artisans in Sangiran.
Together they designed special motifs for this unique and beautiful medium, capturing on cloth, for the first time, the cultural wisdom of the women who have been replicating existing motifs for generations. Batik Sangiran is the product of years of work from artists and academics, exploring the importance of women’s voices in documenting communities for future generations. DREAM JOB Curated by Sophia Cai
The relationship between women and work – domestic, corporate, physical, and otherwise – has gone through a drastic reimagining. Curated by Sophia Cai and featuring work from Kay Abdue, Emma Do and Kim Lam, Makeda Duong, and Truc Truong, Dream Job examines the highs and lows of how, where, why, and for whom women work in the modern world.
By considering the unequal division of labour across gender and racial dynamics, Dream Job examines the popular notion of the 'glass ceiling', challenges stereotypes of white feminism, and poses vital questions about how women of colour are further marginalised in contemporary discussions of gender and (in)equality. ART, NOT WAR Shamsia Hassani
Afghanistan's first female graffiti artist Shamsia Hassani paints crumbling and pock-marked walls in the streets of Kabul, replacing the constant reminders of war with her iconic and colourful images of a woman faced with the many challenges of life in Afghanistan. Creating work through several mediums including murals, graffiti, digital illustrations, and traditional canvas painting, Hassani's art has been exhibited everywhere from galleries to walls around the world, receiving global acclaim.
Examining the effects of war, economic and social instability, and an extremist regime on how Afghan women live their lives, Hassani's work is ultimately filled with strength, possibility, and hope. With an original piece created specifically for OzAsia Festival, Art, Not War provides a rare chance to see the work of one of Afghanistan's most internationally celebrated artists up close. HYOSHI IN COUNTERPOINT In Japanese, the word hyoshi has multiple meanings: it can refer to time and tempo, and also to a moment, a chance. It's when something clicks and feels just right. Hyoshi in Counterpoint sees percussionist Satomi Ohnishi and guzheng virtuoso Zhao Liang lead an all-star collective featuring multi-instrumentalist Jennifer Trijo, shamisen player and Lucky Beats star Noriko Tadano, and string legends Karen De Nardi (viola) and Monica Myung (cello). Together, these six women from different musical traditions and practices come together in 54

Curated by Jonathan Kim Acculturation is the process of assimilating into a new culture, learning and incorporating the values, beliefs, and customs of something new into that which is already established. It can be a difficult process, fraught with uncertainty and intense change. Curated by Jonathan Kim, Pendulum sees six second-generation Asian immigrant artists explore this process. Suspended between two cultures, South Australian artists Shaye Duong, Jazmine Deng, Jake Yang, and Alice Hu, as well as EJ Son and Chris Yee (NSW) explore how their arts practices are affected by cultural displacement and the restoration that comes from reconnection, swinging from one to the other like a pendulum.

“This year’s OzAsia Festival design is inspired by a well-known folktale shared across many countries in Asia: The Cowherd and the Weaver. This story centres around two lovers whose marriage goes against societal norms, as one is a farmer, and one is of royal lineage. Their love angers those in power, and they are banished to live on opposite sides of a heavenly river. After proving their love, the Goddess of Heaven allows them to be reunited once a year. On the seventh day of the seventh month of the Lunar calendar, the Goddess summons birds to fly across the river to create a bridge for the lovers to reunite. Just like the birds flocking together to make a bridge for the lovers, this year’s festival design explores the magic of building new connections together and crossing into areas we thought were impossible. The 2022 OzAsia Festival program features mystical destinations and stories shared across generations, and this is what drew me to The Cowherd and the Weaver. I started to wonder: what kind of bridges are we building for today and the future? How are we creating a strong foundation of sharing our stories and cultures? This year’s festival design is inspired by the spirit of bridges and what this means for us.”

This exciting professional development program will once again be led by performance maker Valerie Berry and coordinated by Zhao Liang.
