WELCOME

Douglas Gautier CEO and Artistic Director Adelaide Festival Centre

from the CEO & ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

Adelaide Festival Centre’s 2016 season is an extensive mix of outstanding arts across the spectrum. Our audiences are diverse and we work hard to deliver a program that reflects this diversity well. Our 2016 season of entertainment includes theatre, dance, music and exhibitions and promises something for everyone. In January, Club Swizzle will ring in the New Year before the iconic movie Ghost hits the stage, kicking off a national tour of this musical smash hit that wowed audiences in the West End and Broadway. School will be in for summer, with the launch of the brand new On Stage, a fun two-week intensive drama, dance and music summer school for children aged 8-16. And also for families, Something on Saturday, our weekend program of entertainment for children will return during winter. We are set for an abundance of great festival action! Adelaide Cabaret Festival welcomes new co-Artistic Directors, Ali McGregor and Eddie Perfect, who have created a dazzling festival of world premieres and international-class cabaret works. Adelaide Guitar Festival brings some of the most influential guitarists from Australia and around the world to Adelaide. And OzAsia Festival – Australia’s leading arts festival for engagement with Asia – returns in September, bringing the Festival Centre and Riverbank precinct to life during spring festival season. You will see a taste of these three Festivals in this Season 2016 brochure, with MUCH more to come. Throughout the season, collaborations and partnerships with South Australia’s leading performing arts companies abound. We know that our loyal patrons will delight in new works from Adelaide Festival of Arts, Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, Australian Dance Theatre, State Theatre Company and State Opera of South Australia. We are delighted to welcome the Australia Ballet to Adelaide Festival Centre twice in 2016 – in May with their highly anticipated production of Swan Lake and October with the spectacular Nijinsky. I hope to welcome you to Adelaide Festival Centre in 2016.

DISCOVER, REFLECT & DREAM When little Balen Taylor was offered his very own Lego exhibition at the 2015 Come Out Children’s Festival, the 10-year old could barely contain his excitement. “I was just so excited, I was crazy with excitement and I really enjoyed it,” he says. “At the end of it I told all the organisers that it changed me and I didn’t want to leave. “It was the best thing ever. It was like being in a famous band where everyone knows your name. I want to do it all over again.” The talented youngster came to the attention of Come Out’s Creative Director Susannah Sweeney after she saw his winning entry in the under-16 division of Brick-a-laide. For his Come Out exhibition Balen built an exact replica of the 1930s City of Baltimore, which took him four months to create. The incredible attention to detail in his Lego creations is mind boggling, including the moving train built from scratch, without instruction. “I find building Lego relaxing and creative and if something pops into my head I can just make it,” he says. “My strong spot is my trains and my favourite thing is

to modifying sets. I like putting every sort of detail into my creations.” Not surprisingly, the talented year four student wants to be a train driver when he grows up. “I am just really proud of my trains and I was so happy that so many people at Come Out came to see my exhibition,” he says. “I spoke to so many people and looked after my own exhibition and a TV station even did a story on me. Everyone likes trains.”

CLOUDSTREET!

George Palmer (adapted from the Tim Winton novel) Family. Evolved.

Cloudstreet! First an iconic novel by Tim Winton, now it receives the musical treatment it truly deserves in this world premiere season of Cloudstreet! After a four-year development, this musical treatment of the story finally gets its chance to fly on the mainstage. Set in the mid-20th century, Cloudstreet! tells the story of two Western Australian families – the Lambs and the Pickles, and the extraordinary events that ultimately bind them together – often hilarious, sometimes harrowing. It is a story of love in all its forms, but most of all, it’s about catharsis and redemption. Cloudstreet! will leave you exhilarated. This quintessential Australian story will be the talking point of 2016.

SWAN LAKE

[Stephen Baynes] Luminous beauty. Transcendent love.

From the first yearning bars of Tchaikovsky’s score, Swan Lake beckons you to another world. With its bewitched Swan Queen, its doomed Prince, its glittering villainess and its drifts of white tutus, this is the ultimate night at the ballet. Stephen Baynes’ traditional production, commissioned in 2012 for The Australian Ballet’s 50th anniversary, combines grand scale and psychological intimacy. His lost, forlorn Siegfried is drawn to the lake and its secret realm of mystery and enchantment, where he falls in love with the Swan Queen Odette. Tricked and betrayed by the seductive Black Swan Odile, he can redeem himself only in death.

26 – 31 MAY

Hugh Colman’s magnificent designs pit Edwardian splendour against the spectral beauty of the white acts. This is a timeless Swan Lake that will tingle your spine and stir your soul.

THE WHARF REVUE 32

15 – 18 JUNE

Celebrating 15 years

There ain’t no party like a Wharf Revue party WRITTEN AND CREATED BY JONATHAN BIGGINS, DREW FORSYTHE AND PHILLIP SCOTT

Over 15 years and 21 shows, they’ve mercilessly mocked all the usual suspects. We’ve watched Howard Tampa with refugees, Rudd give pennies from Kevin, Gillard refuse to be lectured by “that man”, “that man” scrap the carbon tax, stop the boats and – um – get the budget back into surplus... But no one has been able to outplay, outwit or outlast The Wharf Revue. So, we’re throwing a party and everyone’s invited. This year, The Wharf Revue will be a parade of past and present indignitaries – a who’s who of 21st century embarrassments, from the politicians to the celebrities – all skewered on the stake of seriously side-splitting satirical silliness and musical mayhem by Jonathan Biggins, Amanda Bishop, Drew Forsythe and Phillip Scott. Who will make the cut? Who has the numbers in the caucus room? It’s anyone’s guess. The Australian Ballet proudly supported by Adelaide Festival Centre presents

NIJINSKY Celebrity, visionary, muse: Vaslav Nijinsky changed dance forever with his explosive leap and his shockingly sensual choreography, before a dark descent into madness ended his career. John Neumeier, one of the greatest living choreographers of the story ballet and director of the acclaimed Hamburg Ballet, charts Nijinsky’s rise and fall through the vivid memories unfolding in the dancer’s mind during his last performance in a Swiss hotel. He recalls his troubled family, his ill-starred romances and the transcendent performances that brought him fame. The ballet is a tour de force for the whole company, but especially the male dancers, who are given the opportunity to evoke Nijinsky’s distinctive style amid sets and costumes inspired by the exotic glamour of the Ballets Russes. Both a moving tribute and a spectacular piece of theatre, Nijinsky will transport you inside the mind of a genius – and to extremes of anguish and ecstasy.
