@BingleyWaW had loads of walks in November! Did you join them?

Welcome to the new-look, new-format Bingley Review. We’ve made some fairly bold changes which we hope will make the magazine more functional and accessible for new and existing readers. We have also introduced themed sections, so it’s easier to navigate the magazine and find the information you need. Plus, as you will have seen for yourself, we have given the whole publication a dramatic redesign with new fonts, layouts and features. Going forward we are keen to introduce a schools section and a business section, if you would like to contribute to either of these please get in touch. In the past few months we are delighted to have agreed to become media partners for AFC Bingley and present the first in a series of regular columns from club chairman Elliott Horan. We will also have regular contributions from historian and writer Alan Cattell.

Unfortunately, due to to our publishing schedules, we just missed out on being able to cover the Bingley Christmas lights switch on event. But if it was half as good as previous year’s I’m sure you are (were) in for a treat! Haigh Simpson

News & Updates

Bingley actor Rodney Bewes, best known as Bob Ferris in much-loved sitcom The Likely Lads, has passed away at the age of 79.

News & Updates

Bingley-born actor Rodney Bewes dies

Born on November 27, 1938, Rodney Bewes lived in Bingley until the age of six before moving with his family to Luton.

Local collaboration for book project Bingley artist Jane Fielder and local historian Alan Cattell have joined forces to collaborate on his new book projects. One of Jane’s paintings of Bingley was featured as the front cover to Alan’s last book Bingley a Living History. And another of her paintings of Saltaire - Man with Bucket - will be used on the cover of Alan’s new book Titus Salt and Sons- A Farming Legacy. Alan’s publisher has commissioned him to write two further books during 2018/19, namely Shipley Glen - A Victorian Playground and Bingley College - A History. Jane has agreed to visit both locations and paint original landscape panoramas. Besides being book covers these will be available for sale as original paintings and copies from The Bingley Gallery, 29 Park Road. Asked for comment on the partnership Alan says “Jane’s paintings are the perfect brand image for the books - what we are both trying to do is capture moments from Bingley and surrounding areas past and present before they are lost”. The books will be on sale at Little Yorkshire Gift Company, The Card Emporium and The Bingley Gallery and at Woodbank Nursery, Harden.

He went on to have an acting career that included roles in Z Cars, Dr Who and Billy Liar before becoming one of the most recognisable faces on TV as Bob Ferris in The Likely Lads. In more recent years Mr Bewes brought one-man shows to Bradford Playhouse and Bingley Arts Centre.

Bingley bar wins shed dispute The Potting Shed has won its appeal against Bradford Council’s refusal to grant retrospective planning permission for the shed features in the bars beer garden. The Planning Inspectorate threw out an enforcement notice from the Council which had reccomended six sheds, a pergola and a barbecue shelter to be removed. Both decisions mean the bars signature potting sheds can stay.

News & Updates

From the Council Plans put forward to revitalise Market A meeting was held at 8am on Saturday 18 November to take some practical steps towards a revitalised Bingley Market, and was attended by a group of residents keen to become volunteer Marketmakers.

Consultation seeks solution for condemned toilets A major item on the Town Council agenda at the moment is the future of the public toilets in Jubilee Gardens, due to be closed by Bradford Council in March 2018. The Council has been working with a firm of architects and other experts to explore the possibility of developing the current toilet site into a single-storey building that would provide a central office space for the Council and retain public toilets for Bingley. A public consultation event is being held on Saturday 2 December 2017 at Cardigan House, Ferncliffe Road, Bingley, BD16 2TA. Residents are invited to drop in at any time between 10am and 3pm to see plans of the scheme, and full information about the financial implications, which would include a precept increase of around 60p per Band D property in 2018-19, will be available at the meeting. Town Councillors will be there to listen to feedback. Following the event on 2 December, all information will be posted on the Bingley Town Council website and the consultation will remain open until 31 December.

8

The plan being put forward was for a series of six monthly markets in the warmer months of next year, offering quality fresh food and other goods, such as arts and crafts, international hot cuisine, a courtyard area to eat and enjoy produce bought on the market or in the town’s cafes and shops as well as musical and other entertainment. Attendees aim to visit other markets locally to get additional ideas and to feed back at the next meeting of the group which will take place in January (date tba).

Winter planting in Bingley Following the success of the floral displays and planting throughout Bingley this summer, barrier baskets and tubs have been planted up with polyanthus, bellis and pansies to give some colour during the winter months. Local groups and individual residents have also planted crocuses and bulbs in various parts of the parish, including Quaker Hill, off Chapel Lane, and the banking on the corner of Ferncliffe Road and the slip road to the bypass. The Council’s Green and Clean Forum will be meeting again on Saturday 13 January 2018 when there will be a presentation about Yorkshire in Bloom.

Bingley Bantams: no ordinary supporters club Sport

by Ian Taylor

Bingley Bantams was formed in April 2017 by Ian and Keith Taylor, two lifelong Bradford City fans and brothers. Their idea was to form a supporters group to not only assist the club and local charities but to be a bit different in what they did compared to other more traditional supporters groups. The club was formed one Thursday night when eight people turned up for a meeting in The Myrtle Grove, Bingley. A chairman, treasurer and secretary were quickly elected and hey presto we had a new Bradford City Supporters Group in Bingley. This was closely followed by the setting up of a dedicated website, www.bingleybantams.co.uk as well as Twitter and a Facebook page. The first event the club had to arrange was the small matter of a trip to Wembley for the play off final against Millwall! The club eventually took four coach loads of Bantams down to Wembley quite an introduction into what being a supporters group means, especially as one of the coaches broke down on the way to London. A replacement coach was organised, and the supporters continued their journey to Wembley and arrived in plenty of time to watch Bradford lose 1-0 on the day. In line with their aim of doing things differently the club have produced their own hand pulled beer called Bingley Bantams Gold. This beer is brewed by Bingley Brewery and is on sale at their HQ in Bingley, The Firepit as well as several pubs within the Bradford area.

12

The launch of the beer was attended by Edin Rahic, one of the club’s owners, James Mason the Chief Operating Officer, Stuart McCall the manager and local City legend Wayne Jacobs as well as around 150 Bantam Fans The next event on the calendar for the club was the Winter Ball on Friday 24 November at the Bradford & Bingley Sports Club, Wagon Lane, with around 100 people in attendance. Since starting in April 2017, the club have arranged travel to every away game this season as well as raising over £4,000 for their chosen charity One in a Million by participating in various events such as sending 12 members to do the three peaks walk. The club continue to grow and now has nearly 100 members. They continue to look for diverse types of events and the latest one is a Beer and Gin festival which will be held at Valley Parade in July next year so look out for details of this event in the future. The club are always looking for new members and people who want to travel to the away games to follow City and if anyone is interested then please contact the secretary by emailing to secretary@bingleybantams.co.uk.

Bradford & Bingley Rugby Club well on the road to recovery Having nearly been destroyed by the floods of Boxing Day 2015, Bradford and Bingley Rugby Club are delighted to report that nearly two years later the club is now fully restored and in many ways in ruder health than it was before the flood. It was only through the tenacity of the club’s members in volunteering to work across the Christmas period that the club was sufficiently clear of debris to host its first function on 2nd January 2016, but as those who attended will confirm, things were far from right and it was almost a year later that everything had dried out sufficiently for proper repairs and redecoration to begin in earnest. As club secretary Nick Patterson remembers, “Immediately after the flood the response from the people of Bingley was absolutely tremendous. We had people who had never set foot in the club before mopping and shovelling and generally doing what they could to remove the debris. We then had a second wave of volunteers and donations right through 2016 which allowed us to completely refurbish the kitchens and bars and this pushed on into this year when we gutted and refitted the changing rooms” Although the central hub at Wagon Lane is managed by the Rugby Club, the facilities at Wagon Lane are home to Bingley Harriers, Bingley Town Football Club, Bingley Bees Hockey, Bradford and Bingley Cricket Club and Bingley Canoe Club. The clubhouse and changing facilities are used by all clubs and the function room is available to hire on 01274 564479. Bingley Harriers recently hosted a runners versus cyclists event which attracted some of the top all terrain cyclists in the north of England and the Rugby Club bounced back from the flood to gain promotion from Yorkshire One to North One East, where they finished sixth last season.

Blue Blood: The AFC Bingley column By Elliott Horan

I’m sat in our home dressing room sorting the clean shirts for this weekends fixture, not exactly what you envisage a club Chairman to be doing three days before he goes on holiday for his daughters birthday. But that’s me, Elliott Horan the man who lives and breathes AFC Bingley and has blue blood running my veins. AFC Bingley are off to a remarkable start in their debut season. We are currently unbeaten in the league, set to play the semi-finals of the league cup and still yet to play in the District Cup for this season. Earlier this month, AFC Bingley hired Steve Lewis as Manager of the First Team squad after the departure of Jake Farren and his backroom staff. “Steve and me spoke for quite some time and it was all about football, winning and success but we also agreed that this could and should be a real football club representing Bingley” We interviewed Steve before our training session one week and we were amazed at his attitude, knowledge and the same mindset as myself plus the committee. “We are here to win trophies and be successful for Bingley.” Steve comes with a wealth of experience, having managed and coached at numerous clubs. Thackley AFC was his most recent appointment and he led the Reserves to the league cup final, where they were beaten by a very impressive FC United of Manchester.

Obviously with Steve taking on the managerial position at AFC Bingley, he wanted assurances that we are in fact making steps towards the National League rather remaining as solely a Sunday club. Those assurances have been made and I am unable to divulge any information on where our new ground will be situated for next season but I can say that we are already making the necessary steps and planning for an exciting season next year, with the help of particularly STRI and Little England. This season is about winning as many trophies as possible and then next season will be about recruitment and making sure we have recruited well for our start in Saturday football. Our long term vision is to be a real footballing outfit for Bingley. Maybe in ten years you might be wearing a scarf, buying a programme and standing within the AFC Bingley stand but I won’t stop until Bingley has a proper football club representing this wonderful town.

Christmas Events

The Living Advent Calendar December sees the return of one of Saltaire’s favourite festive events, the Saltaire Living Advent Calendar. For the twelfth year, the World Heritage site will be decorated with a series of windows, illuminating the village’s streets in the run up to Christmas. The organisers were bowled over this year when a total of 37 people volunteered to take part, meaning that the event will kick off with a record 14 windows on 1 of December. From then on it will revert to one further window being lit each evening until Christmas Eve. Windows will be lit from 4pm until 10.30 and the display will continue until 5 of January, giving visitors an extra chance to view the complete advent calendar over the festive season. As always, the subject of each window remains a strict secret until the day it is illuminated, and themes are likely to range from traditionally religious to topical concerns, wintry scenes and tongue in cheek humour. Although visitors flock from near and far, the Advent Calendar also reaches a much wider audience online. The windows are simultaneously ‘opened’ via social media, and the event’s Facebook following grows year-on-year, currently with 3500 followers

18

from 45 countries. Another popular way to share the Advent Calendar with friends and family is via a Christmas card; a pack of 12 cards featuring some of 2016’s designs are available to buy online and from Saltaire Visitor Information Centre, Salt’s Mill, Salts Pots and Pickles Deli in Baildon. A leaflet with a map showing the locations of the windows is available from the Saltaire Visitor Information Centre and other local outlets, or can be downloaded from the Saltaire Inspired Website (saltaireinspired. org.uk/living-advent-calendar). The leaflet itself also hosts a bonus window design in the form of an artwork by 7 year-old local resident Charlie Robinson-Arundel, who won a competition to design the artwork for the Living Advent Calendar publicity earlier this year. The Saltaire Living Advent Calendar is kindly sponsored by Edward Street Bakery. www.saltaireinspired.org.uk

Happy End

14 November, Picturehouse at National Science and Media Museum, Bradford

Director: Michael Haenke. Starring: Isabelle Huppert, Jean-Louis Trintignant, Mathieu Kassovitz and Toby Jones

A new film documenting the eventful first year in charge for Bradford City owners Edin Rahic and Stefan Rupp was premiered to a packed Pictureville on 14 November. A German film crew had spent the 2016/17 season shadowing the pair as they got to grips with the English game, the city of Bradford and the ups and downs of running a football club. The warts and all documentary went behind the scenes for some of the most dramatic moments of the season including deadline day transfer drama and Wembley heartache. It offered a fascinating insight into the new owners philosophy and the impact this has had on the club, the staff and the supporters. Beautifully shot, surprisingly revealing and cleverly edited, it is a film that will interest fans from any club. It was certainly well received by a packed out Pictureville audience that included the entire Bradford City squad, the two chairmen, manager Stuart McCall and star of the film Gregg Abbott (Chief Scout). The film is due to be shown on Eurosport early next year and is available for free through the clubs website. bradfordcityfc.co.uk

Michael Haneke returns with a biting satire on bourgeois family values set in the shadow of the European refugee crisis. Featuring a cast of top acting talent, including Isabelle Huppert, Jean-Louis Trintignant, Mathieu Kassovitz and Toby Jones, it’s a piercing dark comedy on the blind preoccupations of middleclass angst. Nominated for the Palme d’Or at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival, Happy End bears all the hallmarks of Haneke’s uniquely stark and unsympathetic style. Pairing pitch-black humour with chillingly precise direction.

Doccy McDocFest 2 & 3 December, Delius Art Centre A new documentary festival from the organisers of the popular Drunken Film Fest launches this December. Doccy McDocFest will bring a wide array of short contemporary documentaries from around the globe, including two special presentations from right here in Bradford. Films not to be missed include Accordion Class screening Saturday, a film from China exploring the under-examined history of the accordion, En La Boca from Argentina also screening Saturday, delving into the underworld of fake football tickets in Buenos Aires, and Eye, Camera screening Sunday, a fascinating look at one filmmaker’s struggle to cope after a potentially career-ending accident. The lineup is certainly diverse, with films from the USA, UK, Poland, China, Argentina, Russia, and beyond as well as a strong representation of female filmmakers.

Royal Opera House Live: The Nutcracker 5 December, 7.15pm Picturehouse, National Science & Media Museum

IMAX 3D: Star Wars: The Last Jedi 14 December Picturehouse, National Science & Media Museum

With its festive period setting, dancing snowflakes and enchanting stage magic, Lev Ivanov’s 1892 ballet has become the perfect Christmas entertainment, with Tchaikovsky’s sumptuous, sugar-spun music the most recognizable of all ballet scores. Jessica Brown anticipates the extraordinary ballet that charms all ages in equal measure.

How do you follow The Force Awakens – a film that raked in two billion dollars at the box office and made the world fall in love with Star Wars all over again? That’s the mammoth task in the charge of The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson (Looper), who has lined up an epic adventure that challenges heroes old and new and delves deep into the mythology of the Force.

The Polar Express

11 December, 8.30pm Picturehouse, National Science & Media Museum

23 December, 5.45pm Picturehouse, National Science & Media Museum

Naïve, artistic, and inescapably nonconformist, Edward learns that social and physical difference can inspire celebrity and mistrust in equal measure. Comedic and tragic in turns, this poignant celebration of a visionary spirit struggling to survive in an unforgiving world remains Burton’s most original and beguiling contemporary fairy story.

Since its release in 2004, ‘The Polar Express’ has made its way into virtually every family home and has cemented itself as a modern classic. The story follows a young boy who embarks on a magical train to the North Pole, discovering that the wonder of life never fades for those who believe. Enjoy this Christmas masterpiece and get in the Christmas mood!

Milner Field Farm a brief history Heritage

by Alan Cattell

In 2017 it seems amazing that a farm built as a model Farm in 1872 for Titus Salt Jr is still fulfilling its purpose as a working dairy farm. It’s one of the very few original model farms in the UK still doing so. What is equally amazing is that one family, the Downs, have been the tenants of the farm in Gilstead continuously since 1902 - a period of 115 years. What is a Model Farm? Model farms were built to improve the efficiency of farming in the Victorian era through better farming methods and by improving dilapidated and sometimes randomly built farmsteads. One of the earliest model farms was built in 1856 as a dairy farm at Windsor by Prince Albert the husband of Queen Victoria. The period from 1850 to 1870 was known as the high farming era of British agriculture. Milner Field Farm was built as a classic U-shaped model farm. What purpose did Milner Field Farm fulfill? From being built in 1872, it was essentially the home farm of the Milner Field estate, built to provide meat and dairy produce for the household. Catherine Salt, Titus Jrs wife is known to have taken an interest particularly in the dairy, which is evidenced by an inventory in her day book in 1880. Titus Jr and his Farm Bailiff are also known to have shown and won prizes for cattle stock, (particularly shorthorn cattle) at a variety of Agricultural Shows throughout the North of England. Agricultural Societies

30

Titus Jr was a lifelong member of the Yorkshire Agricultural Society. He and three of his brothers namely, Herbert, William

Henry and Edward took an active interest in farming, Herbert and William Henry on a full-time basis (specialising in shorthorn cattle), and Titus Jr and Edward as an additional but part-time interest to their involvement at Salts Mill. Both were also interested in horticulture, particularly orchids. They and their father Titus Salt Sr were members of both local and national Agricultural Societies. My recent research has shown that Titus Salt Sr built a model byre at Crow Nest, Lightcliffe, Halifax circa 1869, William Henry built a model farm at Mapplewell Grange in Leicestershire and Edward built his model farm at Ferniehirst, Baildon in the period 1863 - 1872 (probably the latter date). I can find little or no evidence of other families being interested or involved in model farms to this extent. Did Milner Field Farm always have a Bailiff? No, John Mc Kie was the first and only Bailiff and manager of the farm during the period 1872-1881. After this period the farm was run by tenant famers namely George Cattle 1881-1894 and Frederick Allen until 1901. The farm was then advertised for let in 1902 and Downs family recollections are that John Downs was successful in applying for and gaining tenancy of the farm in 1902. In 1903, Sir James Roberts bought Milner Field Estate.

Oxley Meier Guitar Project

2 December, Otley Courthouse

7 December

Iain Matthews started out as the lead male singer on the first two Fairport Convention albums. While Fairport began to delve into music from the English folk tradition, Iain formed Matthews Southern Comfort, continuing to pursue the more US style folk of those two early Fairport albums. They recorded both original material & some outstanding covers, including Neil Young’s “Tell Me Why”, James Taylor’s “Something in the Way She Moves” and most notably Joni Mitchell’s “Woodstock”, which went to No.1 here in the UK. MSC recorded three albums in the early 70s, and Iain has reformed the band on several occasions. He has always been a gifted songwriter and, perhaps rather like Joe South, is one of those musicians whose songs people know, but often don’t realise who wrote them. As a vocalist he has the knack of reaching right inside his songs to draw out the essence at their very heart, singing protest songs like a man who cares and songs about being in love like a man who is.

Bingley College: rock and roll heyday by Martin Brooks

1969 was a great year for music and emerging British bands. Progressive rock, blues and folk were thriving alongside the music in the singles charts. I’d been elected Social Secretary at Bingley College of Education and for a year I was going to be allowed to pick the bands who would play at the Lady Lane campus which overlooked the town. An avid reader of the New Musical Express (NME) and Sounds, I loved anything to do with the music scene. Radio 1 had been on the air since 1967 and John Peel in particular was playing lots of interesting music. A new Students Union building was nearing completion, but bands usually played in the college dining room across from the student bar. I started phoning booking agents for prices and availability. Ringing round to get the best prices. I asked art students to help design the posters for the concerts and social events. I’d have to go to a firm in Cullingworth to get them screen printed. Day-glow colours made your poster really stand out. Copies were sent out to the local colleges in Bradford, Keighley and Ilkley. Put a poster up around the Bingley campus and it would disappear within hours!

36

My first booking was the American singer Marsha Hunt. Having appeared in the musical Hair in London, she had gained a name for herself as one of Mick Jagger’s girlfriends. She came to Bingley with her backing band White Trash. They had just had a minor hit with a Dr John song Walk on Gilded Splinters. Wonderfully photogenic with her afro hair, she made a great poster image. Tickets were 7/11d. She certainly looked the part when she came on stage. I remember her stage outfit being white leather with long tassels all down the sleeves, very sixties! Her singing career didn’t last, but Marsha Hunt went on to become a successful novelist. The band Free arrived at Bingley College at lunchtime for a midweek evening concert. They set up in the main hall and proceeded to do a full soundcheck much to the annoyance of the administration staff. The band then drove back to Bradford for the afternoon to go to the cinema. They went to see a film,

Music

controversial at the time, called The Killing of Sister George starring Beryl Reid. Free’s line-up was the one which appeared some months later on Top of the Pops playing All Right Now. They powered through their bluesy set which probably included their biggest hit, but you don’t remember these things. I do recall the booking fee was £75. Mott the Hoople followed some months later for the same price. Mick Ralphs their guitarist, later teamed up with Paul Roger’s and Simon Kirke of Free to form the very successful Bad Company. He has played Bingley twice in the last few years with his blues band and Ian Hunter the lead singer of Mott the Hoople played The Arts Centre earlier this year. I wonder if they remembered they’d played in the town 37 years ago. In March 1970 I booked Yes to play at Bingley. They’d been at Leeds University the night before and due to the closeness of two venues they came for £175. As they were

setting up, the roadie was looking up at the new ceiling of the Student’s Union. “He’ll have a go at that when they get on stage”, he said. The Yes line-up at that time included Peter Banks on guitar and sure enough halfway through a solo up went the neck of his guitar and down came a new ceiling panel. The band played songs from their first album Yes including their distinctive version of the Lennon/McCartney song Every Little Thing. The new students union had a bar, smaller rooms and a main hall, but to accommodate everyone who wanted to attend a social event, the main hall was too small. I decided that the best way to use the space was to have different events going on around the building. Jazz, folk, local bands, discos, late night films, events in the bar made up an evening’s programme. Some of the bands I’d booked went on to become famous and it has been good to recall their early performances at Bingley College, and that we were there to see them.

Rock Around the Clock: Bradford Accordion Band by Anita Basic

Playing to a packed auditorium at Bingley Arts Centre on Saturday, 30th September, Bradford Accordion Band marked its 20th anniversary with a spectacular variety show in aid of the Alzheimer’s Society charity. The all-accordion band, which was originally founded in 1997, has built up a loyal following in the Bingley area, and its vibrant charity concert, entitled Rock Around the Clock - a Trip Down Memory Lane, was crammed with almost 300 fans as a result. The band were supported by the supremely talented cabaret act Encore, a 14-piece singing group who wowed the audience with their wide ranging and moving repertoire, including songs from the shows and film.

38

In addition, the theatre’s electric atmosphere was further enhanced with superb performances by the Bazzmattaz dance group from Halifax. The 1940s medley Boogie Woogie Bazzmatazz and 1970s Disco Defenders had the audience cheering in delight. Bazz Robson (the founder) also gave an amusing solo performance to the band’s Hungarian Dance no 5.

So, Rock Around The Clock was definitely not a predictable event. The show featured a giant stuffed lion, a vodka-fuelled special guest and a loin-clothed Tarzan, topped off with a rousing Rock Around The Clock finale performed by all the acts on stage together. A mesmerising solo performance was presented by BAB’s lead player Anna Leskelä, a comedy turn by Mike Porter, solo vocals from Nicola Brook and a moving account of dealing with Alzheimer’s from the point of view of a carer by the band’s oldest member Eric Purnell. Skilfully compèred by Anita Bašic, the concert was a resounding success with something for everyone. A fantastic £2587.85 was raised for the Alzheimer’s Society.
