AD DESIGN: Hello and thanks for picking up the first ever Bingley Review magazine.

FoxDuo

One or two of you may recognise my face from the Bingley Matters magazine, which was sadly discontinued by its publishers in 2014. Since then I have set up my own publishing company and now I’m returning with a brand new magazine that I hope will be even more popular.

Face WY

The Bingley Review is the third title in the Festival Publications family, joining the Saltaire Review and Bradford Review, which have both established a strong following in their respective areas. I hope the magazine will provide a useful and informative resource for residents and visitors to the area and provide a platform for individuals and organisations to showcase their skills and community projects. I’d like to say a huge thank you to everybody who helped make this first issue happen, including the many businesses who have supported the magazine and the dozens of individuals who have been in touch to offer content and ideas. I hope you enjoy the read and please feel free to give us your feedback and suggestions on social media.

In the news Shoppers flock to new Aldi store The opening of the new Aldi store in Bingley has received huge public support with over 200 people queueing outside in the early hours to be the first inside. Prizes including a television, digital camera and smartphone were given away at the grand opening event, with ribbon-cutting duties given to children from Bingley Juniors FC. The store has provided new football shirts for the club and will also be donating produce to Bingley Youth CafĂŠ in an attempt to engage with the local community. The store has created 28 jobs and is expected to have a positive overall impact on the local economy thanks to increased footfall and choice. Local leaders have also hailed the opening as a sign of growing confidence in Bingley.

A new Town Council for Bingley!

Events to mark canals bicentenary

A new Bingley Town Council is to be created for Bingley, Cottingley, Crossflatts, Eldwick, Gilstead and Micklethwaite, giving the area a greater say in local decision making. The formation of the new council was agreed by City of Bradford Metropolitan District Council following a successful two-year campaign by local residents. Bingley area will now join the 18 other areas within Bradford District which have a town, parish or neighbourhood council. It will have 16 councillors representing wards across the parish, who will be elected in May 2016.

Canal enthusiasts across the country started a year of celebrations last month to mark the bicentenary of the completion the Leeds And Liverpool Canal, which was opened on 22 October 1816.

The campaign for a council was backed by many local voluntary organisations, including Bingley Civic Trust, the town’s Rotary Clubs and village societies and associations. More information can be found at www.bingleyccg.org.uk, on Facebook - BingleyCouncilGroup - or on Twitter @bingleyccg.

A heritage mile marker project, a new choral symphony, the pioneering Desmond Family Canoe Trail, the Super Slow Way arts project and dozens of festivals and events will mark the special 200th anniversary year along the Leeds And Liverpool Canal’s 127 mile route. The celebrations will be led by the Canal And River Trust, the Leeds And Liverpool Canal Society, the Inland Waterways Association and the 12 boroughs through which it travels. Celebrations will culminate in October 2016, with the heritage education boat, Kennet re-creating the first complete trans-Pennine journey along the canal by the merchants of Yorkshire and Lancashire 200 years ago.

On the cover Photography by Nick Hirst

This month’s stunning cover shot was the first in a series curated and provided by members of Bingley Camera Club (BCC). It was taken by landscape specialist and club secretary Nick Hirst, who spoke to the Bingley Review about his passion for photography. Who are you and what do you do when you’re not taking photos? I’m Nick Hirst. I’m currently the secretary of Bingley Camera Club and the third generation of my family to be involved in the club, my grandfather William Hirst being a founding member in 1951. When I’m not taking photos I enjoy hill walking in the Dales and the Lake District. I also enjoy spending time with family and friends. I do like editing my photos and find this gets a lot easier when accompanied by a nice glass of vin rouge!

Nick specialises in landscape photography and is particularly fond of the Lake District How did you get into photography? I got my love of photography through my father Ian Hirst, he was heavily involved in the club throughout his life and after he passed away I became very keen. He is the one person in the world who I would like to critique my work now. What subject matter do you find most interesting to photograph and do you have a specialism? My main passion is landscapes, they don’t move and you can have a good think about what you’re going to take while having a brew! I’ve recently done some weddings and really enjoyed that new challenge. I have found you can’t have a brew and stand looking at the bride waiting for the light to be right, they’re somewhat more demanding than Ingleborough!

What’s your relationship with Bingley? My first school was Myrtle Park and I went to the Grammar School, as did all my family. I have remained in the area all my life and obviously now I’m closely linked to the Camera Club Are you working on any projects at the moment? I’ve recently been involved in photographing a new band, The Calls. They’re Leeds-based and it’s been a great challenge, taking shots in very low light. I’m also hoping to continue with weddings and do outdoor family portraits. Some of my work is on Flickr, I have a Facebook page - Nick Hirst Photography - and I also have prints for sale at Art Form, Bradford Road, Shipley.

The perfect portal for parenting Having started out as a protest against the closure of a children’s centre, Bingley Mums has quickly grown to be something of an institution and an invaluable resource for parents living in the Bingley area. Heather McAvan, founder and author of Bingleymums.com spoke to the Bingley Review about her experiences so far and plans for the future. Tell us a bit about Bingley Mums. A year or so ago I was involved in a campaign to save Trinity Children’s Centre, and I set up a Facebook group and started a petition which I then presented to Bradford Council. It angered me at the time that no-one was speaking up for Bingley and looking after its interests. So I decided to do something about it myself. Bingley Mums started off as a what’s on

blog for families in the Bingley area, and has now turned into an information website with events listings, baby and toddler groups, school information and much more. It’s constantly evolving and eventually I hope it will be THE place to get all the information people need about Bingley. More recently I’ve started a page of recommended tradespeople, which is a step away from writing about parenting but a response to what people have been asking for. If you’re new to the area and need a builder or a hairdresser, where do you look? This is the section I’d like to develop more - obviously it depends on people letting me know their recommendations. Bingley Mums has a very busy thriving Facebook page where I share local events and information, and people can ask me to share for them - if they are starting a new baby class, setting up a new business or just want another mum to have a coffee

Bingley Mums founder Heather McAvan with her daughter Rose with. Bingley Mums also has its own mum and baby brunch group at the Glen Pub in Gilstead on Wednesday mornings at 10am. It’s about listening to what our local community needs and acting accordingly. What inspired you to set up Bingleymums. com ? I’ve been involved with the blogging community for quite a few years with my fashion blog Pret A Mummy, so I know a bit about what people like to read, how to set up a website and what works well for parents. Along with this I recognised a need for local information sharing. I found it hard to get information about baby groups, child-friendly cafes and the like, so I thought, why not set something up of my own? For me it’s about making Bingley a better place

to live for me, my children, and everyone else by connecting people to services and information and making people’s lives easier! What’s the best thing about running Bingley Mums? Meeting people through my website has been an unexpected plus. I’ve made loads of new friends and connected with lots of new people - something that’s really important to me, as I’m not from Bingley originally and when we first moved here I struggled to settle in as I was working all the time. I’ve also been able to help lots of businesses in the area by promoting them on the Bingley Mums Facebook page - it’s win/win. People find the services they need and businesses grow. I love helping people and I get a real buzz out of seeing Bingley improve, as

15

that benefits everyone. Recently I’ve been lucky enough to find some local sponsors who have been able to help me financially with running the website, and I’ve had an email today from a sponsor who said they’ve already had a huge surge in web traffic and bookings, which I find really satisfying as it means the website is doing what it’s supposed to do! What’s next for Bingley Mums? To continue helping as many people as possible in the Bingley area by adding to and updating the website regularly. I’ve been lucky enough to have been helped by a local web developer who is going to help me turn Bingley Mums into a directory website so people can find things more easily without having to trawl through all the blog posts. Ideally I’d like more sponsorship to help pay for development time, as that’s a limiting factor at the moment. I would love to host networking events to help mums (and anyone else!) in business connect with one another and find ways to work together. Lastly I’d love to host a Bingley families event but this is something I am still thinking about - it might be a local business selling event, some sort of baby equipment sale or just a night out for mums - it’s something I’m working on. Lastly, who IS Bingley Mums and how do you have time to do all this? This is something I get asked a lot. I’m Heather McAvan and I have three children - two older boys of seven and four and a baby girl of five months. My boys go to St Joseph’s in Bingley. I’ve had lots of different jobs, all of which have prepared me for running the Bingley Mums website and Facebook page! I’ve been a PA, a computer programmer, I’ve taught in Japan and Spain, and also in the UK for eight years, before becoming the marketing manager for a teaching website. I think I’m a quick learner and because of my experience blogging I like to put things together and promote them. I work on the site a lot in the evenings and weekends - much to my husband’s annoyance!

I love helping people and I get a real buzz out of seeing Bingley improve

The Christmas Fayre event will provide a day of free entertainment for 100s of families

Family event to light up the festive season By Haigh Simpson

Bingley will once again enter the Christmas season full of community spirit, with a Christmas Fayre and Lights Switch On expected to attract hundreds of local families into the town centre. The event is organised by the Bingley Chamber, who have kept its status as a free event and organised a range of family attractions, from Santa’s Grotto to a Bucking Rudolph. The event always requires hard work and a lot of effort and collaboration from the Chamber and local businesses, although this year’s event has been an even bigger challenge than usual. Chairman of the Bingley Chamber Howard Martin said, “This is the first year we’ve been without a Town Centre Manager and the first year in which we have received no council funding. So, in addition to taking on a lot of the organisational elements that were previously looked after by Bob Parker, we have also had to find extra funding.” “One of the towns other big events, the Bingley Bonfire, was unfortunately cancelled so we feel it’s especially important that we make this year’s Christmas Lights Switch On bigger and better than before.” Fellow Chamber member Jamie Illingworth explained what the Chamber had planned for this year’s event, which includes some exciting new additions. “The event starts at 10:30am on Saturday 28 November and will continue through to 4:30pm when the lights will be switched on. “We’ve got 20 stalls in the Arts Centre and a grotto in the Market Square, with over 700 free presents for our team of Santas to give out to children. We’ve also got fairground rides, the land train, donkey rides and this year we’ve added the cave bus, an indoor climbing wall inside a double decker bus. Another new attraction is the Bucking Rudolph, which should be good fun. All these are free for children, which is obviously a huge bonus for families coming down to enjoy the day as much as possible.” One of the event’s biggest attractions is without question Santa’s Grotto. Last year over 500 families collected free presents. “The grotto gets so busy on the day that we have Santas on rotation!” said Jamie, “We also have elves from Myrtle Park Primary School, who have a great day staffing the grotto.”

19

Howard believes the grotto is a marker of what the event is all about and the ability to give something back to the community. “Other places will charge to see Santa and in places such as garden centres it’s often a commercial venture. Bingley Chamber has always believed that it should be a free event so that, irrespective of people’s financial situation, they can enjoy a good day out as a family.” It’s not all about the kids though - in addition to the regular food market Foundry Hill Bar will be providing a marquee serving mulled wine, beer and ciders to warm your cockles and keep spirits high. With the event just weeks away the team are happy with how their plans are coming together, although there’s still time to get involved. Stalls are still available in the Arts Centre for anyone looking to showcase their work and the Chamber are always on the lookout for extra volunteers to help during the event. The Chamber also welcome any prizes donated by local businesses, however big or small, for the tombola, which helps raise much-needed funds for the following year’s event. Howard said, “We have a very strong band of volunteers who work hard to make this event possible and it’s a credit to them that it’s such a success. Some of us are there from 5:30am on a cold November morning to set everything up, and it all comes down again the same day, so it’s no mean feat. “As usual the businesses in Bingley have rallied around and helped to provide sponsorship, and that goes a long way to ensuring the event can take place. We’re just hoping for a great turnout, good weather and a wonderful day. But also we hope it can provide a boost to local businesses such as cafes, bars and pubs who will benefit from the footfall on the day.” For information on running a stall at the event contact Andrew Mills at andrew@bingleychamber.co.uk or for information on the event in general contact Howard Martin at Howard@ bingleychamber.co.uk

A little over 150 years ago a small part of the Bingley landscape was changed. Following the enclosure of Gilstead Moor, allocations of land were made to local landowners and charities. Giving some consideration to the people of Bingley, two segments of land were allocated to the Churchwardens and Overseers of the Poor. One plot of two acres for recreation, a second, amounting to ten acres, for allotments for the labouring poor. The plot for recreation was near Warren Farm and the poor’s allotments were to be at Brown Hill, the site of a former quarry between Bingley and Eldwick. In 1861 there was a reversal of the intended uses and immediately there rose the opportunity to create a People’s Park. Money was raised, largely in mills and factories, to fund the transformation of the rugged moorland landscape with voluntary labour. Public subscription made it possible to purchase an adjoining eight acres for expansion So it was that on 10 March 1861, at a major public ceremony and parade from Bingley up to Brown Hill, Mr William Ferrand cut the first sod, with a spade whose blade has been preserved to this day. There followed two years of hard labour terracing the former debris from the quarry, creating a formal carriage drive around the whole perimeter of the park and a promenade running across the site on level ground. Footpaths were created, edged with both Carboniferous-era fossil remains and graveyard blocks from Bailey Hills Cemetery. During the two years it is said some 15,000 trees were planted, as well as shrubs, mostly laurel and rhododendron

The peoples park: a short history of the Prince of Wales Park By Allan Mirfield

When the town looked at an opening date it was realised there was the forthcoming marriage of the then Prince of Wales on 6 June 1865. Thus it was decided to rename the People’s Park with a royal title, and have a grand opening ceremony on the day of the wedding. In recognition of this His Royal

Highness donated 34 trees, despatching them from his estate at Sandringham in 1866. That same year the first edifice was erected in the park - an ornamental drinking fountain donated by the Total Abstainers of Bingley. The site of the park contained three significant Brown Hill wells and it was from these moorland sources that the fountain supplied spring water, to be taken from its bowl using two chained metal cups In 1870 a stone plinth or obelisk was unveiled in memory of the Airedale poet Mr John Nicholson, complete with a terracotta bust which sadly was destroyed a few years later. There followed various other additions, notably the Park Lodge, ornamental entrances and various shelters for both the public and workers in the park. A significant arrival was in 1884, when the Bingley Market Cross and Hall were brought from Bingley Main Street due to road widening. This remained in the park for a century, positioned as a pavilion in what became known as the ‘ariana’ (the old quarry) – the venue for annual galas and band concerts. Developments continued for decades, especially from 1956 to 1976 when a certain Mr Wilson was park keeper. It was he who utilised the moorland springs to create The Cascade, complete with tiny bridges and a pond, as well as two other water features in the more formal areas of the park. He also developed the colourful Azalea Walk and it was a credit to him that the park was at a peak of popularity and appearance by the time of his retirement. After the splendour of yesteryear, the park gradually lost its charm due to a lack of maintenance. It was deemed unsafe to use, structures were demolished, public toilets removed, and the vandalism was regrettable So it was that an appeal for public support was launched to form the Friends of Prince of Wales Park,

and from March 2013 volunteers repeated the efforts of 150 years ago to make the park as safe, attractive and popular as it had been. There followed two years of labour, clearing drains, re-establishing footpaths, managing overgrown areas and discovering hidden features. Local donations from businesses, individuals, organisations and support from Bradford Council led the way to a major grant being awarded. Working together for a better Bingley By Haigh Simpson

With social media playing an ever more important role in business and community life, local businesswoman Rachel Barratt has created Bingley Hour, an online networking event concerning all things Bingley. She spoke to the Bingley Review about her idea and the response so far. Tell us a bit about Bingley Hour and what you hope to achieve.... Bingley Hour is an online networking event, 8-9pm every Tuesday on Twitter, when @Bingley_Hour (hashtag #bingleyhour) encourages people to interact with each other. I’d like to use it as a hub to promote anything and everything to do with Bingley. The only rule is that the business or event is in Bingley or covers the Bingley area. I’d like it to become the go-to account on Twitter to find out about what’s on offer in Bingley. Eventually I’d like to organise face-to-face networking events in Bingley. What was it made you decide to set up the Bingley Hour? Through my business I’ve come across a number of the local Twitter hours and been to some really valuable networking events. When I realised many other local areas have their own Twitter hour and Bingley doesn’t, I thought it was really important to change that. I think social media networking is a prime way of attracting customers and I really want to make it simple and easy for the people of Bingley to tap into that market. How has the response been so far - do you think Bingley has a strong business community? The response has been excellent! I curated our third hour this week and I’m seeing the number of followers grow daily. I think that the local business community in Bingley is thriving and

Rachel Barratt is hoping to promote business and discuss local issues through the Bingley Hour networking events very varied, which is a great strength. In my opinion Bingley is a prime example of a local community that could help everyone promote their businesses through the use of social media. I do think a lot of what is on offer in Bingley isn’t widely promoted – and I hope between Bingley Hour and The Bingley Review we can change that over the coming months. What sort of issues have you been discussing and what would you like to see happen in Bingley over the next few years? We’ve had a huge variety of issues – the opening of the new Aldi store, the new Bingley Town Council, local devolution and elected Mayors. I’ve had people contact me about really varied events - from singing to cycling

events and from fitness to Halloween. We’ve even discussed the contribution of Bingley residents to the new James Bond movie. I’ve had so many of the local businesses in Bingley get in touch - from pubs to shops, churches to theatres, gyms to sports clubs. What’s your own relationship to Bingley? I first got to know the town through playing rugby here years ago. Then I moved to Bingley seven years ago, and now I’m part of a local singing group, my daughter attends school here and I run my own business from Bingley. I know first hand what we have on offer in this community – we just need to get the message out further!

Connecting people through photography

By Haigh Simpson

Why Don’t We . . . is a new local charity which uses photography to develop skills, confidence, well-being and independence for people with learning disabilities through a range of commissioned and collaborative projects. I caught up with WDW’s photographer and facilitator Tony O’Connell to find out more. How did Why Don’t We come about? Several successful and enjoyable funded initiatives using film and photographic techniques with learning disability groups resulted in exhibitions at various festivals, events and venues. Then changes were made to disability funding and it looked like the end of such sessions. However, participants and volunteers wanted them to continue, as did families because of the positive impact of the sessions. One participant’s mum told us “We have seen a massive positive change since this course!”

So, what happened? Volunteers decided they’d establish a community group, enabling them to bid for a broader range of funding to work with members of the learning disability community and organisations to tackle issues of concern. Beginning in 2014, their innovative approach attracted finance for two projects; one on Healthy Eating, the other addressing Hate Crime. Both have produced resources which the wider community will be able to use. Who chose the name? “Why Don’t We?” is a phrase used all the time in our sessions when we’re deciding what to do, it embodies the positive approach of participants, and everyone

agreed that it fitted our approach. Where are you based? Although we operate in several locations across the area, our main base is Cottingley Cornerstone Centre. We love it there because it’s a great space and has all the facilities we need. More importantly, the staff and management team have made us very welcome and are really supportive. What is Why Don’t We up to at the moment? We recently received funding from the People’s Health Trust for a project called People in Focus, which will work on a range of projects, using photography, to produce learning resources. It’s funded until March 2017 and participation is open to adults with learning disabilities who will decide the

issues to focus on as well as promoting and marketing the resources produced, which will be downloadable from the website. Who’s involved in Why Don’t We? The management team, families, the learning disability community and professionals. The input from experienced volunteers has been invaluable in the sessions and the fun we all have, because, believe me, the sessions are fun. How can we find out more? Why Don’t We is aimed at 18+. Anyone can contact me, Tony O’Connell on 07887 885011 or email me at tony@why-dont-we.com To learn more about these projects and the wider aims of the group visit their website www.why-dont-we.com

The big lights switch on

Keep running up that hill

Hundreds of families are expected to descend on Bingley Town Centre once again for the annual Christmas Fayre event, free to the public with a range of festive activities and attractions including donkey rides, craft stalls and a climbing wall.

Bingley Harriers will once again host their annual Harriers vs Cyclists race on 21 November, with the 5.5 mile route setting off from the Fishermans Inn at Dowley Gap. The event is a competition between runners and cyclists with (usually) the first 10 in each category scoring points for their side. The winning team will then be presented with the Fisherman Trophy, named after The Fisherman Inn from where the race starts and where the prizegiving takes place afterwards. The pub is also kindly providing free food after the race!

One of the highlights of the event is always Santa’s grotto and this year over 700 presents will be given away to local children by Santa and his helpers. There’ll also be a tombola, food and drink stalls and of course the big finale - the Christmas Lights Switch On itself. The event takes place on Saturday 28 November, starting at 10.30am, with the Lights Switch On at 4.30pm. All in all a fantastic festive day out for all the family.

The race begins at 2pm and you can view the course route on the Bingley Harriers website. Entrants must be over 16 and there’s a race fee of £6 to cover the costs of the event.

Celebrating Sir Fred Hoyle

Picking the Pirates of Penzance

Ever seen the road sign and wondered who Sir Fred Hoyle was, and why the Bingley bypass has been named after him? Fred, born in Gilstead one hundred years ago and educated at Bingley Grammar School, became one of the most famous scientists of the twentieth century. This year there have been events around the world to mark his centenary. Last month the Royal Astronomical Society held a special full day event in London in his memory. Here in Bingley he is also being celebrated. Bingley Grammar School is hosting a day of events on Thursday 19 November, with an activity morning for primary schools and an evening lecture with several guest speakers, including his research partner, his granddaughter Nicola, and scientists from Bradford and York universities.

The story is set in Cornwall, in the second half of the 20th century. It begins with a local group of Bikers (the Pirates) trying to persuade one of their Gang not to leave. The story revolves around their dealings with a local member of the aristocracy, his numerous daughters, and the police, who are brought in to protect them from the outrageous behaviour of the Pirates. Fans of traditional G&S will not be disappointed. Apart from the more modern costumes, the words and music are the same. We are also looking for people to get involved. If you are a singer, actor or dancer and would like to join us, please visit www.bingleygilbertandsullivansociety. org.uk to find out more. Rehearsals begin 7 January 2016, Monday and Thursday evenings at Lady Lane Park School, Bingley.
