We’ve had so many people tell us how useful they have found the magazine and it’s been great to hear examples of it having an impact for those who have featured. This absence of a big lead feature in this issue means we have been able to squeeze lots more in than usual. Hopefully something will catch your eye and we can help influence you to join a new group or attend a local event this spring. We’ve been working hard on our distribution since the launch in November and I hope you have seen plenty of copies around on your travels. Nevertheless, we are always looking to improve our service so if you think we are missing out any key locations please let us know so we can continue to get better. Enjoy the read and have a super spring. haigh simpson

Bingley Youth Cafe secures future
Wilsden gets control of its green spaces
Bingley Youth Cafe has had its immediate future secured after councillors voted to approve a plan to combine existing resources with Shipley Youth Cafe.
Green spaces in Wilsden including the village park could now be run by Wilsden Parish Council after councillors held discussions about responsibility for management and maintenance.
The Shipley Area Committee voted in favour of a plan to move the Council-backed Bingley Inclusion Project into the Bingley Youth Cafe at Bingley Swimming Pool. The cafe may also be used by staff from Green Lane Recreation Centre and the new Bingley Town Council. Shipley and Bingley Voluntary Services failed in its bid for renewed Lottery funding for the BYC, prompting the Council to step in and help.
A working group looked into the issues involved, and is preparing a report in preparation for a contract to be drawn up with Bradford Council. The Parish Council is expected to take on responsibilities such as grass-cutting, pathsweeping, and maintenance of flowerbeds in both the park and the war memorial. The Council’s Green Spaces Working Group have also met with potential contractors to manage the park and bowling green, as well as Ian Wood from Bradford’s parks and green spaces department, to speak about several issues.

Teaching kids outdoor skills By Rachel Shaw
More than one in nine children in England have not set foot in a park, forest, beach or any other natural environment for at least 12 months. Get Out More is a locally-based social enterprise with a serious mission to help people engage with nature and feel better about themselves in mind and body. It’s clear that we all need to get out more. Director Annie Berrington started Get Out More in 2012 to encourage people of all ages to feel connected to nature and each other and more motivated to get active outdoors regularly. She says, “Our vision is to generate wellbeing through positive outdoor experiences and we run a range of outdoor programmes including forest schools, outdoor learning, play, adventure and creativity as well as community engagement programmes.” One of Get Out More’s most popular programmes is Forest School Saturdays, a monthly forest school for young people aged 10-15 years at the beautiful St Ives Estate right here in Bingley. Annie says, “Skills, adventure and freedom feature high on the list for these sessions - like all our forest school programmes there’s a mix of games, woodland activities
and crafts, but they’re tailored to young people with more of the skilful stuff, like tool work and campfire cooking.” All the sessions are led by qualified forest school practitioners and the young people have the chance to let their imaginations run free and go wild in the woods. Woodlands are magical places which provide a wealth of resources for discovery, learning and play. At forest school positive experiences in the outdoors inspire children and adults to develop new skills, have fun and rediscover their love of learning. Explaining more about the social enterprise’s work, Annie says, “The surplus from Get Out More’s activities supports the local community. Money was donated recently to Friends of St Ives to order a commemorative stone to mark the Ferrands Oak. This was a 250-year-old tree which weighed more than 12 tons and was used to re-build part of York Minster after the cathedral’s fire in 1984. We also support groups in other woodlands and communities we work in, including Hirst Wood Regeneration Group.” If you want to find out more about Get Out More or book on for any of their sessions go to www. getoutmorecic.co.uk for more details.

A friendly club in a secluded setting By Solna Burnham
Many of you will not know we exist¸ but our small family-friendly tennis club is just along Beckfoot Lane, past Shipley Golf Club. Beckfoot Tennis Club was established in 1946 and the courts were laid with the hard work of a group of volunteers. Photographs show ladies working manually in formal skirts and brogues! There was also another tennis club in Bingley at one time, formed some 30 years later in 1977 on the courts of the defunct Airedale Tennis Club behind the graveyard on Bailey Hills from which it took its name. Once again the work was done by the members themselves and within a couple of years they had two hard courts. Both clubs existed side by side until late 2012 when it was realised there weren’t enough tennis players in Bingley to support and maintain two tennis clubs. The two clubs then merged and settled into the grounds at Beckfoot Lane where there are four traditional shale courts. We’re now the only tennis club in Bingley. We always welcome new members of all ages and ability. We play social tennis on Wednesday evenings from 6pm when anyone can turn up and be sure of a game. We also have tournaments and club social events on several Sundays throughout the summer. This year these will include a celebration of our 70th birthday. We have nine teams in the Bradford Parks League, Bradford Friendly League and Wharfedale Leagues. Each league plays a different format, comprising mixed, ladies and men’s doubles. Matches take place on weekday evenings and Saturday afternoons, leaving the courts free for social tennis at other times. Our members are of all abilities from beginners

to good club standard. With social tennis and teams of all levels there’s something for everyone. Since the merger we’ve refurbished the clubhouse to make it a pleasanter place for players and spectators on an English summer evening. We now have a Level Three qualified coach who offers individual or group lessons to everyone from beginners to improvers. In addition we’re involved in a number of local initiatives. Last summer saw a group of year nines from Parkside School attend the club for coaching on a weekly basis. Most of them were complete beginners but by the end of the summer they were playing competently. Some of them also joined the club and enjoyed playing social tennis with other members.
After the success of the festival of mixed-ability rugby held at Bradford and Bingley Rugby Club in 2015 the Institute of Mixed Ability Sport have applied for a grant from Sport England to extend the scheme into other local sports. Our club has offered to join the initiative and several of our members have offered to play. As a club we strive to keep our fees to a minimum to cover our running costs, and we have great discounts for families. You can come along up to three times as a guest before deciding if you’d like to join, so why not give tennis in Bingley a try. For more information visit www.bingleytennisclub. co.uk

Bronte Vintage Gathering 2016 By Haigh Simpson
The 18th annual Bronte Vintage Gathering takes place on 7 and 8 May 2016, off the B6144 at Cullingworth. The event raises muchneeded funds for the Manorlands Sue Ryder Hospice at Oxenhope and is as ever run with kind permission of Mr and Mrs Thompson. The event is a fun-filled family weekend with entertainment for all ages, this year hosting The thrilling Xtreme Stunt Team with exciting stunts and what look like leaps of faith, along with the educational, interesting and humorous Sheep Show - there’s far more to sheep than you think! We also have Pendle Dog Agility displays, falconry displays, and you can try your hand at clay pigeon shooting, model aircraft display and Blackpool donkeys. Terrier racing is fun for all, so bring yours and have a go. There’ll be rides and entertainments for all the family and plenty of catering choice to suit everyone. Vintage vehicles abound, including full and scalesize steamers, tractors, cars, motorcycles, military, commercials and stationary engines, and the exhibitors are more than happy to chat about their machines. The bar marquee hosts an array of local community and charity stalls throughout the weekend so you can keep updated with local issues whilst enjoying the delicious locally-brewed Old Spot Ales. In the marquee are our Manorlands stalls of BVG branded clothing, home-made cakes, jams and chutneys, tombolas etc. Please support these as 100% goes to Manorlands. Raffle tickets are available for lots of amazing prizes and will be drawn on Sunday 8. We have a very busy craft marquee selling an array of fabulous treats and gifts. Treat yourself or a friend to something special. You’ll be spoilt for choice. Trade stands are plentiful, selling a variety of interesting and useful goods at reasonable prices.
The Xtreme stunt team will be wowing the crowds with their motorcycle stunt show
in the adjoining field - what an assortment to choose from, that crucial thing you’ve been searching for is probably right there! Household, garden, farm, in fact anything and everything just waiting for your bids.
July so come and have a flutter on this great day out. Finally there’s our grand charity evening in November featuring varying stalls, raffle and auction. Sponsorship at any of the above events is always more than welcome.
Saturday night in the bar marquee we have live music and a great atmosphere so come and enjoy a drink, a catch up with old friends and have a laugh. Free entry (Saturday night only).
The irreplaceable Manorlands Hospice costs £2.9 million per year to function successfully. Of that £1.6 million needs to be raised this year alone to enable them to offer the excellent care and services, not only for patients but also for their families who benefit immensely from the guidance and care provided. Your support in helping us is always appreciated.
Sunday afternoon brings us to the Grand Auction of donated goods. From weekends away to walking sticks, all lots are donated by local businesses and supporters and what an array there is. After 18 years over £340,000 has been raised for Manorlands Hospice from this main event, plus we have a Harness Racing meeting on 31

Robertshaw Festival: Showcasing the region’s best young musicians and performers By Jennifer Marshall Bingley’s renowned Robertshaw Festival of Music Speech and Drama is already in full preparation for this year’s event. Once again it will be held in Beckfoot School, Wagon Lane, Bingley, in the evening of Friday 4 March and all day on Saturday 5 March. The quality of the entrants is quite astonishing and it has been amazing to watch their progress and developing skills and confidence over the years. It would be a tremendous advantage to all concerned if we could attract a wider audience. All sessions are open to the general public and not just to supporters of the competitors. The quality of the performances is often comparable to professionals and the diversity of the age range and levels of attainment provide an interesting and reassuring glimpse of the variety and creativity of those involved. Do come along and show your support for this long-standing Festival. For many years the pieces for each class were chosen by our drama and musical stewards but many classes now offer own-choice selection. This has broadened the appeal of the festival to both beginners and experienced
competitors and has greatly extended the repertoire of entrants and certainly provided a wider and very personal delivery. Hilda Harrison of Cononley - a passionate supporter and participant for over 40 years - will again this year be competing. She has a truly amazing voice and extensive choice of solo pieces. Such is the reputation of the festival that we are able to attract the services of excellent adjudicators who are specialists in their field. By providing individual feedback to competitors their comments have been complimentary, objective and included valuable tips on potential development. Every competitor is awarded a graded certificate. It’s most gratifying to learn that several of our earlier competitors have developed a successful professional career in music or theatre. How delightful to hear Ruby Hendry - a previous winner of the prestigious Silver Harp Trophy - singing in her beautiful voice for BBC Radio Leeds Carol Concert last Christmas. The entire Festival is organised and managed by a willing cohort of volunteers who are particularly active during Festival
days, both assisting competitors, adjudicators and the general public. These stewards are an invaluable part of the weekend and anyone interested can contact a member of the committee to offer their services. In order to make the Festival as inclusive as possible we make every effort to keep our entry fees down to an affordable level. However the cost of setting up the event, particularly the hiring of the school and adjudicator’s expenses, are considerable and we are grateful to the Friends of the Robertshaw Festival who willingly make an annual donation to us. If you are committed to the continuation of the Festival, attending the event or making a contribution it would help us to maintain this highly-regarded annual event. At a time when instant entertainment is
available at the flick of a switch from various media it’s important to realise that the quality achieved by our performers is anything but instant. For the majority it represents years of expert tuition and endless hours of practice. Our appreciation goes to those inspirational teachers, supportive parents and the local music and drama schools who develop such wide-ranging skills and we are grateful to them for their continuing support of the festival. We hope this has whetted your appetite to come and see for yourself how this oldestablished Festival has grown from its inception in 1933 to the present day. William Robertshaw would be astonished to note the breadth and variety of classes, from drama to solo singing and instruments, to classes for choirs and brass bands.

Bingley’s champion bodybuilder By Rachel Barratt
Local resident Anna Millington-Downing is the very epitome of the This Girl Can campaign! Not only is Anna a firefighter, co-owner of Amazon Natural Fitness and a busy wife and mum, but she recently finished in first place in the Pro International Bodybuilding Championships in October and took second place in the WNBF World Championships in November. I spoke to Anna about her competition and how she fits everything in! It obviously takes a lot of discipline to remain in peak physical condition. How do you keep yourself motivated? By staying focussed on the end goal. I’m very competitive and strive for improvement so I love to know I’m heading in the right direction. I break my 24-week preparation diet into chunks so I can hit regular landmarks. I use pictures and the mirror to show me the gradual changes and the
positives that come with the sacrifice. I have cheat meals at the end of the week until really close to the competition. I can also have occasional nice things as long as I account for them in my daily intake. I train hard because it makes me feel good and in control. If I train well I can eat well and enjoy food in general. As well as a bodybuilder, you’re a wife, mother, gym owner and firefighter. How do you fit it all in? I need a very good diary! Without my diary I feel lost. It’s just one big juggling act. The firefighting is my full-time fixed rota and I focus everything else around that. We have a gym manager and more staff now so this gives me more time to spend with my family. The balance is very hard and I would love more time in the day!
Juggling act - Anna Millington-Downing is a mum, firefighter, gym owner and champion bodybuilder.
In October you won your first pro title – how did that feel? It felt fantastic! The competitors were all world standard and had competed at World Championships. This was the biggest win in my career so far and a great confidence boost for the World Championships. And a second place in the World Championships in November – were you pleased with that? Going into the competition I felt it could be absolutely anybody’s on the day. Everyone has their own strengths and weaknesses but it was a very tough competition. I was in my best condition yet and improved my previous performance of fourth place in 2012 by two places, so I was utterly delighted.
You’re in a drug-free association which fits with the mindset of Amazon. Can you explain a bit more about that? Using drugs is an easy option to achieve a desired result, in my opinion. You see results quickly but the body reverts to its smaller self just as fast. It’s harmful to the body and can cause irreversible damage which can affect you later in life. I choose to stay healthy and to build my body to last as long as possible. I have to work hard but I compete knowing I’m with other tested athletes who’ve worked just as hard, so we’re all on a level playing field. There are many arguments as to why people take drugs in sport but the bottom line is drugs give an unfair advantage, which in any sport is cheating.

How would you describe your sound? Traditional folk music with increasing nods to jazz and leftfield artists. Think John Renbourn meets Bill Frisell meets Lau. Whereabouts in Bingley are you all from? I live in Crossflatts, so not technically Bingley but close enough. Close enough to drunkenly walk home along the canal towpath after a few bevvies in Bingley. If you were to pick a favourite Bingley venue to play at, which one would it be and why? It would have to be the Old White Horse. It’s where my first band from school used to play, so good memories of trying to get
people moshing in that place. But also it’s got character, I like old buildings. What’s the best thing about playing live? Just getting to play guitar in front of people, it’s a total thrill, especially if I can sense that people are really interested in what I’m doing. I’ve practised pretty much every day since I was about 14, and I still do now. There’s always new things I want to try out, and bring into my set, whether that’s experimenting with effects pedals, or messing around with different chords and harmony. I’m always excited to get out and play more shows. What are you working on at the moment and what do you have planned for 2016?
Leftfield folk Local folk musician Henry Parker talks to the Bingley Review By Haigh Simpson
I’m currently trying to build my repertoire, so I’m constantly hunting out traditional songs, whether from listening to records, looking through books or just searching around online. I’m also frantically firing off emails trying to get gigs sorted. As far as the rest of the year goes I’ve got some cool gigs booked, Bacca Pipes folk club in Keighley will be a real highlight, and then also I’ll be getting out and doing floor spots and full sets in clubs a bit further afield. I’ll be releasing new music as well, might just be digital for this year but I’ll certainly be planning another EP to release physically. Do you have any local influences that
have helped you build your sound and why? I love walking, especially on the moors around the area, Bingley/Ilkley moor and also those around Haworth. I think the bleakness of these places really seeps into my music, and I was even considering doing some field recordings up on the moors, I’ll have to have a think about that. Also I’m continually influenced by all the local musicians you meet at jam sessions and singers’ nights, there’s always a wealth of ideas to steal from these situations. Otway and Barrett Cult duo to play Arts Centre
This may be the last Otway and Barrett tour – according to Willy. Otway remains unconvinced. Either way, don’t miss this dynamic duo when they pitch up at Bingley Arts Centre on 1st April for a fantastic mixture of music and humour. The partnership of John Otway & Wild Willy Barrett was never going to be smooth. Willy was a musical prodigy having learned to play at the age of four and mastering the guitar, piano, banjo and fiddle by the time Otway gave his first performance - drinking a bottle of ink in-one in the school playground, to
an audience of 100 fellow school-children who did not believe anyone would go to such ridiculous extremes just to get attention. It was only because they lived a hundred yards apart and that a fortune-teller (at the local Red-Cross bazaar in Aylesbury ) had told Otway that he would achieve fame and success with a blonde haired musician, that they ever worked together in the first place. The first place Otway and Barrett did not work together was their first gig - John was heckled off stage during his solo number and both Willy and the audience
decided that it would be better if they did not do the rest of the show as a duo. They did however do some recording together, but after falling out John put out the single himself leaving Willy’s name off the label. That should have been the end of the duo, but Pete Townshend heard the record and offered to produce the act - an offer neither party felt they could refuse. With the hatchet temporarily buried John and Willy produced their first album. After appearance on the TV show The Old Grey Whistle Test - during which John landed on his testicles whilst leaping astride Willy’s amplifier - an amused punk audience bought enough copies of the single “Really Free” to give them their first Hit. Things did not go smoothly following this success. Otway unwisely chose to follow up the Otway/Barrett punk hit with a solo
Otway orchestral ballad he had written for a girl he fancied - it was a flop so, to the annoyance of their record company (who had paid them a massive advance) John and Willy split up again, the day their second Album “Deep and Meaningless” was released. When times got tough they did re-unite for short periods of time, but any sustained partnership was usually curtailed by unreasonable behaviour by one of the parties. Barrett writing a song called “Give It Headbutts” which required him to bang John’s head against the microphone in time to the music and Otway recording a solo album called “All Balls and no Willy” are typical examples of this. In the past few years Otway and Barrett have reunited for a few short tours, if only to prove that nothing much has changed. The latest of these sees them come to Bingley, with tickets available for £12.

Jazzing it up in Bingley Bingley has had a vibrant jazz club since the 1960s, originally at the nowdisappeared Old King’s Head, then for many years at the Brown Cow, and more recently we were at the Conservative Club. But for the past two years we’ve been at York Street Social Club very successfully every Thursday evening, where an audience of between 50 and 100 avid jazz fans enjoy a wide range of visiting bands. Most of the weekly bands play traditional-style jazz, but we cater for most tastes over the course of the year. Our biggest audience last year was for an appearance by the American guitar legend Howard Alden and we have another world-famous guitarist and jazz educator in Adrian Ingram at the club on 11 February. Details of the upcoming programme with interesting notes about the musicians are on our club Facebook page. In February,
we have Jeff Milner’s New Orleans Band (4 Feb), Adrian Ingram’s Jazz Dawgs (11 Feb), The Aire Valley Jazzmen (18 Feb) and The Harry Long Goodtime Band (25 Feb). Musicians seem to enjoy playing the club very much. They always get a warmly enthusiastic reception and respond to the intimate, comfortable surroundings of the club. Several members of our audience have listened to jazz all their lives but we also have a substantial number who are discovering it for the first time. Everybody is welcome. There’s no admission fee, though we like visitors to contribute a little through the raffle and the voluntary bucket on the door. We can guarantee a good time for all!! Bingley Jazz Club - York Street Social Club, off Leonard Street, Bingley, BD16 2QW meets every Thursday evening, 8-10.30pm. Free admission, with raffle and voluntary contributions bucket on the door.

Picks of the month Suggs: My Life In Words and Music The death of Suggs’ beloved cat on his fiftieth birthday triggered a personal quest to discover what happened to the father he never knew. Stunned by what he learns Suggs is taken back to his childhood on the tough streets of 1970s Soho and his first appearance on Top Of The Pops at the age of eighteen. Is it a play? Is it stand up comedy? Is it Music Hall? Whatever it is hold on to your seats as Suggs goes on to stumble and plummet through the trap door of failure. Then trampoline back up to catch the passing trapeze of show business success! Suggs is coming to Kings Hall, Ilkley on Monday 25 April.
Pirates of penzance at Bingley Arts
Epilepsy Action Bradford 10K
A modern take on a traditional Gilbert and Sullivan play. The story is set in Cornwall, in the 2nd half of the 20th century. It begins with a local group of ‘Bikers’ (the ‘Pirates’) trying to persuade one of their Gang to not to leave. Although they operate on dry land, they are no less a threat to the local community than their sea-going counterparts, of earlier times, but one of them has decided to ‘turn respectable’! The story revolves around their dealings with a local member of the aristocracy, his numerous daughters and the police, who are brought in to protect them from the outrageous behaviour of the Pirates.
Epilepsy Action is urging people to stay on track with their New Year fitness goals by signing up to the 2016 Epilepsy Action Bradford 10k road race. Funds raised from the event on Sunday 13 March will go to support 600,000 people with epilepsy in the UK – over 50,000 of them in the Yorkshire and Humber region.
Pirates of Penzance is on at Bingley Arts Centre from 20-13 April.
Starting and finishing in Centenary Square, the 10k route is fast and flat, suitable both for first-time runners wanting a fun challenge as well as elites looking to achieve a personal best. Entry costs £20 or £18 for runners affiliated to a UK athletics running club. Prizes are awarded for both males and females placed first, second and third, and for winners of the veterans’ categories.
