The Keighley & Airedale Business Awards
Local business achievements to be recognised in the fifth annual Keighley & Airedale Business Awards by Howard Martin
6 Business Feature
2017 sees the Keighley & Airedale Business Awards return for the fifth consecutive year. Businesses in Keighley, Bingley, Haworth and surrounding areas are invited to enter and celebrate the story of their success. This prestigious annual event is now a regular feature on the business calendar. The 2017 Awards culminate in a gala presentation evening, and BBC Look North anchorman Harry Gration will host the event on 30 June at Keighley’s Victoria Hall. Entries for the Awards close on Friday 28 April so businesses are encouraged to get their entries in as soon as possible. The event is organised by local businesses and services that promote and support business within the area, who freely donate their time and services on a voluntary basis. It’s free for all businesses to enter and further information and a list of the award categories can be found at www.keighleybusinessawards. co.uk Businesses are encouraged to enter more than one category, so long as they’re relevant. Tickets to attend the presentation evening cost £35, which includes a four-course meal, and can be obtained via the website. The Awards are a not-for-profit event and are supported by business sponsorship and ticket sales. The headline sponsor for 2017 is Keighley BID.
to be told. We look forward to hearing those stories and getting your success out to a local audience with a platform to broadcast your achievement far and wide. Bingley businesses have enjoyed success in previous years, with both Illingworth McNair Insurance Brokers and The Mortgage Advice Bureau being highly commended in the Financial Services category, and Bingley Chamber of Trade & Commerce is a key member of the organising committee. Bingley-based Feature Radiators not only won a total of four individual award categories in 2015 but was also rewarded by being recognised as overall Business Of The Year in 2015. Howard Martin from Bingley Chamber and a member of the Awards organising committee hopes that more Bingley businesses will enter the awards this year and repeat the success enjoyed by Feature Radiators.
Businesses that have been recognised for their achievements in previous years have enjoyed not only local recognition, but have been encouraged to enter further regional or national awards and in several cases have met with notable success. There are 10 award categories this year. These are listed on the website and aim to reflect the diversity of businesses in the local area. There have been some great successes and some compelling stories from previous winners and we hope there are more waiting

The Bradford Magic Circle Magician, children’s entertainer and Bradford Magic Circle member Keith Pickles discusses the upcoming Hey Presto Magic Show at Bingley Arts Centre. by Haigh Simpson
Headline act Michael Jordan’s High Jinx
Keith, can you tell us a little about the Bradford Magic Circle? The Bradford Magic Circle (BMC) was formed in 1948 when Hassan Noor, a local magician, placed an advert in the T&A asking anyone who was interested in forming a magic club to a meeting. 13 magicians attended and became the founders of the BMC. So next year we’re celebrating our 70th anniversary.
How many members do you have?
Currently we have around 70 members, ranging in age from 13 to 92. Anyone interested in joining can look on our web site at www.bradfordmagiccircle.co.uk to find details.
What is the Hey Presto Show and how many years has the BMC been putting it on?
This is a magic show aimed at all the family. We have mix of our own performers and professional entertainers who usually have some connection with the BMC. The show started in 1973, organised by two of our original members, Bob Eaton and Vincent Shackleton, who are no longer with us, although Vincent’s son Godfrey is still actively involved with the show. The Hey Presto Show has been held in various venues, but this will be our 28th year at the Bingley Arts Centre.
spinner. Mark Shortland, who fooled Penn & Teller on their TV show, will compere the show as well as having his own spot. The BMC’s own Stevie B will bring magic with a touch of humour and Ray Roberts has his own brand of sophisticated magic, whilst the Wright Theatre Arts Dancers will showcase their many dancing talents. And the BMC’s Simon Hannah, a fulltime children’s magician, will once again be bringing us magic especially for the children. Simon was on the show last year and was so popular that he has been brought back – the first time this has happened over the many years the show has been on.
When is it and where can the public get tickets from?
The show is at the Bingley Arts Centre at 7.30pm on Saturday 25 March. Tickets are £11 for adults and £10 for over 60s and under 16s. You can get tickets from the box office at Bingley Arts Centre or by phoning 01274 567983 (open 11am - 3.30pm weekdays) or online from www. bingleyartscentre.co.uk
Who is appearing this year?
We are lucky to have Michael Jordan’s High Jinx as our headline act. Michael is a former member of the BMC and has put on his own show at the New Viva showbar in Blackpool for the last two seasons after being at the Blackpool Pleasure Beach for the previous three. As well as magic Michael is also an accomplished juggler, unicyclist and plate

Ian Hunter by Steve Waite
As leader of 70s British rock legends Mott The Hoople, and a hugely influential solo artist, Ian Hunter is widely revered as one of rock ‘n’ roll’s most compelling performers and one of its most articulate songwriters. Author of such anthems as, All The Way From Memphis, Once Bitten, Twice Shy and Cleveland Rocks and the voice of such landmark albums as All The Young Dudes, Mott, Ian Hunter and You’re Never Alone With A Schizophrenic, he remains a hero to fellow musicians and fans around the world. So we’re very fortunate to have him performing at Bingley Arts Centre on 18 June this year. Whilst his achievements during his first decade as a recording artist would have been more than enough to ensure his iconic status, Hunter has never been one to coast on past glories. In the past dozen years he’s made a series of albums that stand
with his best work, while making a decisive return to touring, delivering incendiary live performances.
He was already a veteran of the London music scene by the time he joined Mott The Hoople in 1969. With Mott he recorded four iconoclastic albums – Mott The Hoople, Mad Shadows, Wildlife and Brain Capers - by the time the band hit international stardom with the glam-rock anthem for a generation, the Bowie-penned All The Young Dudes. The band’s success continued with Mott and The Hoople, containing the hits All The Way From Memphis, Honaloochie Boogie, Roll Away The Stone and The Golden Age Of Rock ‘n’ Roll. On their final tour they took a then littleknown band - Queen - who would have a hit single with a song about their experiences, Now I’m Here. It would be the only time Queen would open for anyone and the band members would stay long-term friends with Ian, contributing backing vocals to his All American Alien Boy album. Mott has also been credited by John Lydon of the Sex Pistols and Mick Jones of The Clash as being one of the pioneers and inspirations behind the burgeoning punk / new wave movement. Later Ian would go on to produce Generation X’s Valley Of The Dolls album and The Clash would play on Ian’s Short Back ‘n’ Sides release. Not many other artists could claim to have influenced bands as diverse as Queen and the Sex Pistols. Mott disbanded in 1974 and Ian moved to New York, segueing into a celebrated solo career and quickly building a formidable body of solo work. The albums - Ian Hunter, All American Alien Boy, Overnight Angels, You’re Never Alone With A Schizophrenic, Short Back ‘n’ Sides and All Of The Good Ones Are Taken - featured such diverse talents as Queen and The Clash, Mick Ronson, the then-unknown jazz sensation Jaco Pastorius, and The E Street Band, of Bruce Springsteen fame.
Barry Manilow took one of Ian’s most personal songs, Ships, into the charts and Great White had an international hit with their cover of Once Bitten, Twice Shy. Ian took time out to produce in the 80s, and returned in 1993, prompted by the death of his long-time collaborator Mick Ronson. Since then Ian has produced albums that many feel are his best work to date - The Artful Dodger, Rant, Shrunken Heads, Man Overboard and When I’m President. There’s now a new generation of artists namechecking him as an influence - Jeff Tweedy of Wilco, Bobby Gillespie of Primal Scream and Taylor Hawkins of the Foo Fighters, to name but three. Mott The Hoople have reformed twice and played two hugely successful tours. If anyone had any doubts as to the longlasting appeal and influence of Ian’s music, you would only have needed to peek into Mott The Hoople’s dressing room after their London show, where they were joined by Led Zeppelin’s Jimmy Page, Mick Jones, Chrissie Hynde, and John Squire of The Stone Roses. September 2016 saw two releases, a brand new studio album plus a 30 CD careerspanning box set. As always, whilst proud of his achievements, Ian would prefer to focus on the future. “To me, music is holy,” Hunter asserts, adding, “For the first fifteen years of my life, I had no idea what I was here for. But then Elvis came out and it was, ‘Oh, that’s what I’m here for’. Rock ‘n’ roll got me out and gave me a great life and I don’t know what I would have done without it. It’s all I know and my identity is all tied up with it.” For tickets and information visit www. bingleyartscentre.co.uk

Sally’s Story: a battle with bowel cancer by Craig Reynolds
Sally Major, 32, lives in Silsden and has four beautiful children and a husband, who love her dearly. She was diagnosed with advanced stage four bowel cancer in May 2015. This was caught very late - despite Sally’s 12 trips to GPs in the previous three or four years, with obvious symptoms of this killer disease, she was never sent for further specialist tests. She had been misdiagnosed repeatedly with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). FLet me bring you up to date on Sally’s progress, and what we’re doing to help her. So, Sally was admitted to hospital, where she was given the devastating news that she had cancer. Within two hours she had emergency surgery to remove the tumour and a foot of her bowel, leaving her with a stoma. She was then told the cancer was incurable - based on an NHS treatment plan of chemotherapy alone - and that secondary cancers had spread to her liver, lungs, lymph nodes and peritoneum (abdominal wall lining). Sally was prescribed intensive chemotherapy, to which she responded well initially, but tumours remained throughout. Out of desperation we did our own research and found there are other clinically proven treatments available, including Ablation, NanoKnife and CyberKnife. However, due to 20 Community Feature
the late diagnosis, these are not available to Sally on the NHS. This is because the NHS NICE rules discount funding of many treatments for stage 4 cancer patients. Sally underwent hyperbaric oxygen treatment, infra-red saunas, supplement regimens, and tried a ketogenic diet. Unfortunately all this had limited effect. Then we turned our attention to immunotherapy at the renowned Hallwang Clinic in Germany. This treatment has shown some amazing results but comes at a price. To see if she would be compatible Sally went to Germany to have tests and give samples. This alone cost over £15,000 but it was worth it she was deemed a suitable candidate. Last autumn/winter Sally started feeling increased pain in her midriff and was unable to eat. She lost around four stone in four months. Her oncologist said it was due to the
cancer and there was little he could do but suggest taking paracetamol and starting an oral chemotherapy. So, in December she went over for her first treatment at the Hallwang. Whilst she was there it was discovered that pancreatitis had been causing Sally so much pain. This should have been identified at home but was overlooked and untreated. If Sally had started the oral chemotherapy, as advised, she would probably no longer be with us. Unfortunately, the doctors at the clinic had to clear the appendicitis before they could fully start the cancer treatments, meaning wasted time and money. Over the festive period Sally started to deteriorate, her appetite had still not fully returned and she felt weak and tired. On Boxing Day she went to A&E where they found she had sepsis. Her levels were very close to being fatal. After spending some time in the hospital it seemed that her levels had dropped and the sepsis was under control. Sally returned home. Shortly after this Sally and Liam planned on returning to Germany, but before going the clinic asked for up-to-date blood results, which were emailed over. Based on the results, they told us that Sally still had sepsis and should get back on antibiotics immediately. So back to hospital she went, this time for over a week. Whilst there her oncologist told Sally that her body could no longer take chemotherapy, she would not be well enough to fly back over to Germany, and to arrange for palliative care...
Currently Sally is at the clinic in Germany receiving treatments. These include immunotherapy antibody, vaccines and chemotherapy. Her appetite is returning, she’s walking about and early results show the treatment is working. As I’m writing this I’ve received word that the doctors at the clinic have said that Sally could not be responding to the treatments any better. Sally is much loved by her friends and family, and we’ve undertaken a constant stream of challenges to try to raise funds. There have been epic canal walks, shaved heads, waxed bodies, mountains climbed, themed nights, craft stalls, wrist bands, abseils and much more. Myself and Alistair Armour recently completed a 500-mile relay from John O’Groats to Silsden, with the help of Russell Waldron, Rob McKay, Steph McKay and a load of amazing volunteers. We continue to think of new ways to raise the vital funds. Community Feature 21
Our Facebook group ‘So, Sally Can Wait’ is helping us to spread the word. The support from friends, family and acquaintances alike, alongside the kindness of strangers, has been overwhelming. So far we’ve managed to raise over £60,000. It’s an astounding figure but it’s still not enough. We estimate we’ll need over £36,000 every month for the next three to six months. So we ask for your help. Sally should not be in this position but unfortunately she is. The treatments are working. If we can raise the required money we could save the life of someone who had basically been sentenced to death, it’s that simple. Sally is also very keen to raise awareness of her story, so other young people know to insist on further investigation if they’re worried.
22 Community Feature
NICE guidelines state that no matter what the symptoms, if you’re young further tests do not need to be carried out. But as we know from bitter experience, young people can get bowel cancer. In May 2015 Sally was given 2½ years to live. Sally’s not ready to give up the fight, for the sake of her loved ones. We’re not ready to give up the fight, out of our love for her. We know now there is treatment that can and will work. If you can help us, please, please do. More of Sally’s story, and upcoming fundraisers can be found at www.youcaring.com/sallymajor

Managing the menopause Half the population has to deal with it, but no one wants to talk about it. There is help out there though. Mary Cuthbert tells us about the meonpause. by Mary Cuthbert
For most women the menopause is a time of great change, but many people find it difficult to talk about. Women will quit jobs rather than discuss symptoms or ask for help. Partners can be left confused and in the dark and many relationships break down during this time. Menopause is defined as the stage in a woman’s life when she has been period-free for a year or more. It’s a relatively modern phenomenon since historically most women didn’t live for long enough to reach it. Our bodies adapt to protect us and this is just another adaptation. It stops women endangering themselves by becoming pregnant and bearing children later in life. The average age for the menopause is 51 years. The peri-menopause is the stage before when changes in women’s hormones start to become more noticeable. They can experience a variety of symptoms, some uncomfortable, such as hot flushes, and also notice other changes which they may not associate directly with the menopause, like mood swings, irritability and increased body fat. Peri-menopause can start at age 35, or sometimes even earlier.

The good news is there’s plenty of help and information out there and this time of life can be tackled head-on instead of being doomfilled and desperate! As a busy mother and business owner aged 48, I realised my peer group could do with some help. As a fitness instructor I understand how bodies work and how we can help them by making positive changes to our lives. With this in mind, I offer regular courses which deliver all the current information to help women take charge and manage this challenge. The courses cover diet, lifestyle, hormones, exercise and stress management and more, and empower women to make decisions based on good scientific facts and truly ROCK their menopause! The information comes from leading experts in women’s health, fitness and diet and I’ve completed and graduated from an online
study course, backed up with interactive group work. This work continues within specialist online forums and groups to ensure that all the information we have is current and credible. So ladies, if you feel like your hormone rollercoaster is out of control, if you think the help and advice you have been offered is not meeting your needs, if you want to find out what’s right for you or if you’d like to prepare for what’s to come, this course is perfect. Each group is supportive and fun. Previous participants have enjoyed the interaction with others going through the same thing and we have had some very lively discussions. The crucial benefits many women have found so far is that you’re not alone and there’s plenty we can all change to make this transition smoother. I can also offer individual help if you prefer.
Menopause is a challenging time for many women and can be viewed in a negative way. However I feel I can give you the tools you need to make it a positive process which will have a huge impact on your future life and wellbeing. You can contact me by email via bingleyfsinfo@gmail.com or phone 07850 265637 to discuss or register your interest. Picks of the Month
Demdike Stare @ Golden Cabinet
The Orgasmic Audio Visual OrgyTM begins in fine style, as Golden Cabinet welcome the return of the mighty Demdike Stare to tear up the headline slot once again. They previously graced the Kirkgate Centre stage back in February 2014, when they left a gasping audience reeling for more. The duo of Miles Whittaker (MLZ, Hate, Pendle Coven, Suum Cuique, Millie etc.) and Sean Canty mould the well worn tropes of jungle, house, techno/ electro, dancehall and beyond into tantalisingly original new shapes whilst simultaneously retaining the character of their trademark sound. We’re pretty confident that their sophomore live set in Shipley is gonna be nothing short of a total nailer. Saturday 4 March, Kirkgate Centre, Shipley
30 Picks of the Month
Lindisfarne @ The Live Room
During the early 70s Lindisfarne were one of the hottest folk rock bands in England, with chart placements on two of their albums that rivaled Jethro Tull, and had them proclaimed one of the most important groups of the decade. With a sound that mixed plaintive folklike melodies, earthy but well-sung harmonies, and acoustic and electric textures, the group seemed poised for international success. Owing to the usual vagaries of the music industry and the premature passing of founder member, Alan Hull, it never quite arrived, but the band always maintained a fiercely loyal fan base. However, the 21st century sees Lindisfarne return to form with a classic six-piece line up of long-time members fronted by original founder-member Rod Clements on vocals, mandolin, fiddle and slide guitar. The Red Shoes @ The Alhambra
The intoxicating tale of possession and obsession has been given some Matthew Bourne magic and it’s coming to the stage in Bradford. Bourne’s production is based on the film by Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger with its roots in the Hans Christian Andersen Fairytale. Bourne rose to fame in 1995 when he created Swan Lake with a cast of male swans, and he later went on to set Bizet’s The Car Man in 1960s America, rather than 19th century Spain. Set in the 1940s, as the film, The Red Shoes tells the story of Vicky Page who dreams of being the world’s greatest dancer. The story travels between London and France and uses the mesmerizing music of golden-age Hollywood composer, Bernard Herrmann. A production full of drama, passion and romance, guaranteed to stay with everyone that experiences it. 28 March - 01 April 2017, Alhambra Theatre
Peter Frank and the Dixieland All Stars
Peter Frank’s Dixieland All Stars present a Concert in aid of Manorlands. The band is made up of musicians who either lead, or who have led bands of their own providing musical entertainment of the highest quality. The musicians have played together for many a year and bring a wonderful, jazzy sound to every venue they play. With trumpet, trombone, drums, double bass, saxophone and clarinet this is a must for any jazz, swing, or ‘big band’ fan. There’s a local link through bandleader and bass player, Peter Frank, as he is a former director of the Bingley Jazz Festival going on to form ‘The All Stars’ in 1996. The band has starred at numerous jazz festivals across England and Wales and continue to play to jazz fans far and wide. Friday 24 March, Bingley Arts Centre Picks of the Month 31

A Quick Chat with
Howard Martin Howard Martin is the Honorary President of Bingley Chamber of Trade and Commerce
Favourite place to eat/drink in and around Bingley.
Local business you admire?
There are some great places to dine in Bingley - for my favourite I’d have to choose the Cardamon Indian Restaurant, great food and a level of service second to none. Martinez Wine Bar and The Potting Shed are both great places to enjoy a quick drink or two after work.
It would be unfair to single out one specific business, but I do admire any business that started from a blank piece of paper and grew to be a success through the enthusiasm and hard work of those involved. If the business actually manufactures things then so much the better.
Local event you couldn’t live without?
Best thing about Bingley?
The annual Bingley Agricultural Show is always a great family day out and Bingley Music Live continues to grow as a music festival, but my favourite would have to be the Christmas Fayre and Lights SwitchOn event.
The way it’s managed to survive not only the economic downturn in recent years but also the loss of the town’s biggest employer, Bradford & Bingley, and is now enjoying an upturn with names such as Marks & Spencer, Aldi, Sainsbury’s and Martinez Wines having the confidence to open premises in the town, hopefully with Costa Coffee and Lidl soon to follow.
