In the news Wreath to mark Somme anniversary Bingley Poppy Appeal is to honour those who fell at the Battle of the Somme with a special wreath. The wreath marks 100 years since the bloody conflict in northern France and has been specially made with the familiar red poppies and a number of bleuet flowers, the French flower of remembrance. Bingley Poppy Appeal organiser Collin MacDonald said, “The Somme’s 100th anniversary provides an opportunity to commemorate the sacrifice of those who lost their lives in the battle, to reflect upon the human cost of conflict and to have hope for a more peaceful world.” The Bingley Branch of the Royal British Legion meets on the first Wednesday of each month at 7pm in the branch’s meeting room at 20 Heath Street, Bingley.
Funding shortage for local charity
The first Brilliant Bingley Biathlon
Bingley-based charity Down Syndrome Bradford are asking local people to help save the charity and its services. The charity works hard to support children with Down Syndrome and their families but is facing up to a shortfall in funding of around £70,000, roughly half of their total running costs.
Entries are now open for the first Brilliant Bingley Biathlon! The event combines a swim and a run and will be held in Bingley Pool and Myrtle Park from 12 noon on Sunday 10 July 2016. It’s a family and community occasion and there’ll be food stalls and entertainment for children around the bandstand.
Down Syndrome Bradford deliver training for parents and schools, early intervention groups, speech and language groups and a range of activities to support all involved including a weekly youth club, dancing, counselling courses, toilet training, behaviour and inclusion. The funding cut means they may have to reduce their services by 50%.
The Biathlon is open to anyone aged eight and over and has been organised by the Friends of Bingley Pool (FOBP) in partnership with Bingley Harriers and Athletic Club and Bingley Amateur Swimming Club. Proceeds will be split equally amongst the three organisations with Friends of Bingley Pool spending any funds raised on pool improvements.
For more information please ring 01274 561308 or email office@downsyndromebradford.co.uk or visit their website www.downsupportbradford.btck.co.uk
Entries for the Biathlon can be made on leaflets available at Bingley Pool and on line at Entry Central www. entrycentral.com/BingleyBiathlon The registration fee is £7.50 per adult and £4.50 for children and concessions.

Bingley Soroptimists By Chris Clark
The Soroptimists in Bingley are a very active group of women involved in projects aimed at improving and transforming the lives of women and girls locally, nationally and internationally. The Bingley group is one of 22 Soroptimist clubs within the Yorkshire region and its members are always happy to extend a warm welcome to any woman living or working in the area. It was chartered in 1949 and has been an active club in the Bingley area since then. Women from all walks of life are welcomed and this brings richness and diversity to the club. SI Bingley’s activities range from the light-hearted to the serious and meaningful, from listening to giving, making to campaigning, sharing to
caring, accompanied in true Soroptimist fashion by good food, friendship and fun! Recent local projects have included The Together Women Project (TWP), which works to move women out of crime and away from damaging lifestyles into positive futures. Using safe women-only spaces, the project has helped to build the resilience of attendees and empowered them to learn new skills. The majority of the women attending are newly released from prison or on community orders, with some women selfreferring themselves. Recent cuts in funding have greatly reduced the staff working with this group of people, meaning the services of SI Bingley will be even more critical. There’s a social side to SI Bingley too.
Members visi ting SI Lecco
Members from four local clubs often get together for different projects and gatherings, including the weekly Knit & Natter or other craft activity sessions. The group make regular prison visits, donate clothes, bedding and crisis bags for women in need, and raise funds for gifts for the children at Christmas and Easter. The group’s latest big project is raising awareness of healthy relationships, focussing particularly on children and young people. Thanks to a grant, SI Bingley has been able to publish age-appropriate resources for distribution across the Bradford Metropolitan District Council. These have been well received by schools, universities, family centres, etc. and
have proved to be a beneficial teaching aid. SI Bingley also has special links with other clubs across the world. Some members recently visited SI Lecco in Italy for their special anniversary celebrations and really enjoyed themselves. The group has friendship links with SI Boise in USA, SI Geraldton in Australia, SI Krakow in Poland and SI Brasov in Romania. There have been many exchange visits with these clubs and lasting friendships made. This year’s Federation Conference will be in Malta and many of us will be attending and meeting our friends from across the Federation.

Bingley Music Live Tinie Tempah tops a big lineup at the 2016 Bingley Music Live
Travis, All Saints, Tinie Tempah, Sigma, Echo and The Bunnymen, Lightning Seeeds, Sigma, Black Grape, We Are Scientists and Sigala are just some of the fantastic acts leading the charge at this year’s Bingley Music Live, known to festival-goers as BML. Eight number one singles and rising, there is no doubt that Tinie Tempah is one of the leading lights of the UK music scene and a massive coup for BML. Exploding onto the top of the UK charts in 2010 with the BML 2015 headliner, Labrinth produced track Pass Out, the smash hit gave birth to the career of both artists. Having received two Brit Awards in 2011 for Best British Breakthrough Act and Best Single he has continued to collaborate with other artists such as Ellie Goulding on Wonderman, BML 2014 artist Jess Glynne on Not Letting Go and recent KDA Number One ‘Turn The Music Louder (Rumble) with BML 2013 artist Katy B. One of the most celebrated multi Brit Award winning and platinum selling bands, Travis, make their long awaited return to the British musical landscape. The band have been responsible for hit after hit with huge tracks such as Sing, Writing to Reach You, Flowers In The Window, and the anthem of all anthems, Why Does It Always Rain on Me. One of the outstanding headline acts, Echo and the Bunnymen, are set to thrill the crowd with hits such as Nothing Lasts Forever, The Cutter, The Killing Fields and Bring On The Dancing Horses.
The Lightning Seeds, with Ian Brodie and band will deliver a plethora of super pop hits like Lucky You, The Life of Riley, Pure and Three Lions at the Bradford Council-run festival. Chart topping exponents of Drum and Bass, Sigma will no doubt be welcomed with open arms as they take to the Myrtle Park stage. The act topped the UK charts with Nobody to Love and in 2014 they released their second consecutive number one Changing co-written by BML 2015’s Ella Eyre and featuring Brit Award winning Paloma Faith with smash hit Higher featuring BML 2015 headliner Labrinth and the hits still keep coming. The recently re-formed All Saints immediately gate-crashed the top 5 album charts with their returning album Red Flag. They’ll be smashing out hit after hit. Always the coolest of all the girl bands, they have an arsenal of massive hits that includes tracks like Never Ever, Pure Shores, I Know Where It’s At and Under The Bridge to name just a few. Festival favourites such as the brilliant We Are Scientists, the Happy Monday’s Shaun Ryder and Bez’s much lauded, exciting side project Black Grape land in Myrtle Park as will the Discovery Stage that will deliver the very best of UK new music such as Hidden Charms as well as a few firm favourites too. And it doesn’t stop there. With around fifty other acts playing across the festival weekend, BML will also pay tribute to Starman David Bowie with a host of very special guest artists each performing their favourite track by him in what is sure to be a very special festival moment.

Starlight Express By Craig Winward
Stage 84 is returning to Bingley Arts Centre in July, once more presenting a magical production of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Starlight Express. By popular demand the area’s leading performing arts school will present four performances of one of the most extraordinary and ambitious musicals of all time. The story presents a world of racing toy trains, as brought to life through a child’s imagination. Various engines including Greaseball (an American diesel locomotive) and Electra (a futuristic electric train) compete to be the fastest engine in the world. The underdog, Rusty (a steam train) tries in vain to match the strength and speed of the others. He is eventually inspired by the mysterious Starlight Express and goes on to win not only the railroad championship, but the heart of the beautiful first class carriage, Pearl. This version of the show features new songs such as I Do, written by Andrew Lloyd Webber, alongside such timeless classics as AC/DC, Pumping Iron, Make Up My Heart, Crazy, U.N.C.O.U.P.L.E.D. and the sensational Starlight Express. The original 1980s production was choreographed by Arlene Philips, who, with director Trevor Nunn, first brought the musical to life by staging it entirely on roller skates. Stage 84’s production sees 40 local young people performing each with their own set of personalised skates. The production follows a previous near sell-out run at the Arts Centre in October last year. Following a great response from
audiences in 2015, the decision was taken to stage the production again this summer. The many high-energy musical numbers are musically directed by Jim Lunt, and roller choreography is by Rebecca Cook and Sophie Gilbertson. The show’s director is Craig Winward, a Bingley resident who’s also responsible for day-to-day operations at Stage 84. He told us the group were very much looking forward to staging the show in Bingley for a second time. “Starlight is one of those stand-out shows. We knew from the beginning last year that it would be a huge challenge, but with a great deal of hard work from a dedicated team we created a show we’re very proud of. In the early stages of rehearsals the cast were visiting roller-rinks across the region to hone their skills, and we were very fortunate to secure the help of Kris Harding, who played Rusty in the professional London and touring productions. “Over several months the cast developed their skills to an impressive level. A huge technical effort supports them on stage each night. The set features video screens, pyrotechnics and is filled with moving lights - there are well over 400 lighting cues. Most of the costumes have been individually handmade and when everything is brought together the effect is wonderful.” To book for Starlight Express call Bingley Arts Centre on 01274 567983 or visit ticketsource. co.uk/bingleyartscentre Tickets are £13-£15 for performances Thursday 14 - Saturday 16 July at 7:15pm, with a Saturday matinee at 2pm

Go for a bike ride
Pop to Bingley Library
Go for a bike ride – with the Tour de France sort-of-fresh in everyone’s minds it’s a great time to make the most of it and spend some time as a family on one of Bingley’s many cycle routes. Myrtle Park is a good place for young children to learn how to ride, with or without stabilisers. Ride round the bandstand or up and down the various paths that wind their way around the park. For older children the canal is a great cycleway, stopping off for a picnic in Saltaire and having an explore in Salt’s Mill before turning round and coming back to Bingley.
Bingley Library and children’s centre often run free activities during the summer months. Well worth keeping an eye out for, they range from teddy bears’ picnics to story times and more. Support these events before they disappear!
Walk to Goit Stock Falls Not too far from Bingley are the wonderful Goit Stock waterfalls near Harden – it’s great for paddling on hot summer days and taking a cool walk through woods. Start from the Malt Shovel pub in Harden – full details at www.bingleylife.co.uk/walk-goitstock-wood-and-waterfall.
Explore St Ives Estate I often forget it’s there, but St Ives is a totally free family-friendly environment with something for everyone. Park up by the adventure playground and spend an hour in the sandpit, on the zip wire and musical bridge. Have a chat with other parents on the many benches while your children burn off some energy. After a picnic lunch take a walk round the lake looking at the different plants and minibeasts in your path. There are further walks beyond but we always find that to be enough, for the moment. There’s plenty of

Have a garden party National Media Museum On a rainy day the National Media Museum in Bradford is a good option – though you’ll probably have to pay for parking, it’s only around £3 for half a day and there are picnic areas inside if you aren’t keen on paying for lunch out. There are various exhibitions going on over the summer and even though the attractions inside don’t change very often it’s still well worth a visit every six months or so.
Build a den Den building is something all children really enjoy – and adults too! Take yourself off to Prince of Wales Park at the top of Park Road – take a few old sheets, gather some sticks and get building! Tell stories in your den, and take a flask so you can enjoy a cool or hot drink. Make woodland trails and enjoy the scenery.
Stay in your own back garden! Set up water play with bubbles, add water to cornflour in a bowl, put jelly in a bucket or make mud pies! Children just enjoy spending time with their parents and you can show that you’re a play expert alongside everything else you do!
Visit Shipley Glen Shipley Glen is easily accessed by foot from Eldwick – just turn right after the war memorial. It’s not great for pushchair access but it’s fine for slightly older children. There are loads of birds of prey up there too so take a notepad to make a list of what you see, do drawings and inspire interest in the world around us. Create your own flower hunt checklist looking out for wild flowers and plants.
Take some pictures
Host a mini sports day
Photography – my son is really into taking photos so I let him use my old iPhone for his photography projects. It’s really useful for developing a keen eye for detail as well as becoming more aware of the world around us. If you can, print the photos off and make into a scrap book. It’s a good way to encourage reluctant writers as it makes sense to record what it is and where it was taken – giving a reason to write is half the battle!
Organise a mini-sports day with the other families in your street/area. Make your own medals to award to winners, have a mums’ race (don’t get too competitive though!), do all the traditional things we used to do as children and finish it off with trestle tables and a community tea party. I guarantee the children will remember it forever!
Go on a steam train Ok, so this one isn’t free. But it’s a fantastic treat and it’s right on our doorstep. The five mile journey is a powerful reminder of our industrial heritage, as well as being a unique way of enjoying the beautiful countryside immortalised by Charlotte, Emily and Anne Brontë. Whilst you are there you can also visit the KWVR museums at Ingrow and the Exhibition Shed at Oxenhope where you can see the engines and Victorian carriages close up.
Get some rest Don’t forget to make some time for yourself this summer holiday. You don’t need to spend every moment entertaining the kids if you do you’ll soon get snappy and burnt out. Even if it’s just reading a book or having a cup of tea in peace and quiet for a few minutes twice a day, everyone will benefit in the long term.

The Bingley Show By David Hempel
Preparations are well under way for the 135th Bingley Show, once again staged in Myrtle Park and organised by the Airedale Agricultural Society. This year’s event is on Saturday 23 July and expected to draw over 14,000 people. Traditional agricultural exhibits will be on show to enjoy along with attractions such as the Wise Owl Bird Of Prey Display Team, The Sheep Show and a fast-paced motorcycle trials display by three-times British Trials Champion Steve Colley. Those with a competitive streak can enter some of the wide range of competition classes held on the day. These range from cattle and sheep classes, through poultry, cavies, handicrafts and horticulture.
Further details, schedules and entry forms can be found on the Show’s website. Those who like competition of a more strenuous nature can take part in the Bingley Harriers 10km Race starting from the main show ring at 11.45am. The cattle and sheep shown by exhibitors from across the North of England will be in peak condition, many having only recently returned home from the Great Yorkshire Show in Harrogate. Hopes are high that both the quality and quantity of livestock present in recent years will be on show once again in 2016. The show jumping events are one of the day’s major attractions, taking place in the main ring throughout the day. The event attracts

some of the sport’s top riders and their horses, as well as local competitors looking to compete at one of the region’s most popular shows. The show jumping begins at 8.30am, and returns later in the afternoon for the action packed Accumulator. Always a crowd pleaser and a good reason to both arrive early in the day and enjoy the early evening in the glorious amphitheatre of Myrtle Park. A revised show layout for 2016 includes a new and larger Members Marquee in the bottom meadow alongside the main ring. It will allow members access to a private bar facility, luxury toilets, ringside seating and tables, and lunch is included. This promises to be the perfect location from which to enjoy the Show’s programme of main ring attractions and
the surrounding backdrop of Myrtle Park. The Show’s organising committee is working hard to put on another top class event and aims to offer a day for the whole family to enjoy. So whether you wish to enjoy the many exhibits or be wowed by the main ring attractions, shop at the numerous trade stands or take part in the 10km race, make sure you get your ticket and head to Myrtle Park for a great family day out in Bingley. For further details of ticket prices, membership packages, schedules and entries, sponsorship opportunities or if you wish to get involved please visit www.bingleyshow.co.uk or follow us on Twitter - @ BingleyShow.

Shipley Street Arts Festival By Tom Taylor This July sees the return of the Shipley Street Arts Festival, a hugely popular event and one of the region’s most impressive creative spectacles. Now in its third year the three-day celebration of street theatre, circus, music and dance sees the centre of Shipley transform into a vibrant platform for the creative arts, with free events across the town from internationally-touring theatrical shows to family workshops and activities. With events running from Friday 1 July to Sunday 3 July, this year’s Festival embraces the theme of storytelling. Iconic literary characters such as Peter Rabbit, the Big Bad Wolf and the Owl and the Pussycat will be popping up throughout the Festival to inspire and entertain alongside a host of other storytelling events, activities and interactive trails. This year’s headline acts, The Wheel House and Reliquary, both tackle storytelling in unique and intriguing ways.
Described as a ‘tender, post-apocalyptic love story’, The Wheel House is a unique, rolling acrobatic theatre show which unfolds inside and around a stunning circular home as it travels with the audience walkingQ alongside. Combining acrobatic virtuosity with engaging design and moving storytelling, Acrojou - the widely-acclaimed company behind The Wheel House - will be entertaining crowds on Friday and Saturday before continuing on their global tour, which has so far seen them perform to well over 200,000 people across 14 countries. Avanti Display’s Reliquary, a spectacular work of art, engineering and obsession, joins The Wheel House as co-headliners for 2016. Featuring sophisticated electronics, mechanics and animatronics, a stunning surreal casket will make its way around Shipley allowing passersby the opportunity to peep inside and create their own tales, stories and questions from what they see within. Drawing on a rich national tradition of

theatre, Avanti Display combine comedy, surrealism and spectacle to create shows imbued with a unique charm, and will be performing three times a day throughout the Festival. Strong and successful artistic partnerships have been key to the Street Arts Festival’s success and this year sees that network of local, regional and national links continue to grow. The Wheel House and Reliquary are both funded by the Yorkshire Festival in partnership with Without Walls Street Arts Consortium. Providing and showcasing 18 days of world class music, dance, theatre, visual art and outdoor performances, Shipley’s involvement with the Yorkshire Festival is both a coup for the Street Arts Festival and the town as a whole. Popular community arts organisation Sponge Tree return as a community partner for 2016 as they take over the recently refurbished
Shipley Library for a weekend of creating props, costumes, puppets and creatures from Jeanne Willis’ book, The King Of Tiny Things. Both the Arts Trail and Urban Canvas, two of the most popular events from last year’s programme, return this year adding to the Festival’s rich offering of visual art and community engagement. Involving everyone in creative play and offering interactive pavement art for all the family, Urban Canvas will again be reinvigorating Well Croft Precinct with colour and concept, whilst the Arts Trail, which last year showcased hundreds of pieces of artwork provided by local schools and community groups in the windows and premises of local businesses, will help turn the town into an art gallery. The Arts Trail will be officially launched as part of the Schools and Community Artwork
Unveiling taking place on Friday at 12.30pm and featuring work from Titus Salt School, Shipley C of E Primary School, St. Anthony’s Catholic Primary School and Hazelbeck School. Children aren’t the only ones encouraged to get creative though as the Festival relaunches its photography competition which this year, fittingly, asks happy snappers to ‘tell a story through (up to three) photos’. Alongside the range of spontaneous street performances, walkabouts, magic and stilt acts, 2016 sees the construction of a fullyrigged main stage in the Market Square car park which will host a festival of music and dance – a festival within a festival – for the duration of the three day event. In between a programme of professional shows, the Festival have embraced their ethos as a community-driven not-for-profit organisation and invited local performers
to take the stage and showcase their talent. In an already impressively large and varied programme, the Festival are also expanding their offering of evening events for 2016. The Friday night sees the inclusion of another community partner, the Windhill Community Centre, who will host an evening of food and entertainment. Saturday night sees the return of the Festival’s raucous and hugely popular Cabaret Heaven which received rave reviews when it launched the Street Arts Festival in 2014. Finally, the Festival draws to a close on Sunday with its inaugural Poetry Evening, an enjoyable evening of poetry and cake led by local poet Jo Brandon. Online booking for Cabaret Heaven and the Poetry Evening is strongly advised. A fantastic free fun event for all the family, Shipley Street Arts Festival takes place on Friday 1, Saturday 2 and Sunday 3 July. www.shipleystreetarts.com.
