In the news Little Germany back in bloom Following an absence of two years, hanging baskets have returned to Bradford’s Little Germany. Thanks to the kind generosity of local businesses and residents 160 beautiful hanging baskets will brighten up the area throughout the summer months. The baskets are concentrated on Peckover Street, Burnett Street and Vicar Lane. They have been produced by Bradford’s ACW Garden Centre. Little Germany Action organised the return of the hanging baskets, with sponsorship coming from local businesses. Due to the generosity of the sponsors Little Germany Action has been able to purchase a water bowser and recruit someone locally to water the baskets on a weekly basis to keep them looking their best.
Drunken Film Fest reveals lineup
Bradford bidding to host Great Exhibition
From July 25 – 30 a series of venues around Bradford will play host to a range of films as part of the first Drunken Film Fest, and the line-up for the festival has been revealed.
Bradford is bidding to host the Great Exhibition Of The North, a two-month spectacular to showcase the best of art, culture and design in the North of England to national and international audiences.
The programme of films includes ‘homebrewed’ screenings such as HAMLETTE, Exit Stage Left and Netherby Naps alongside documental screenings like The Hollerin’ Contest At Spivey’s Corner and The Frying Game. Music videos also make up a number of the showings from various countries including Russia, Turkey, Canada and Spain . Finally there’s a block of animation shorts including Tales Of Fish And Lies and You Are Not The Strongest next to some Bavarian screenings and further international offerings.
Towns and cities across the North East, North West and Yorkshire have been invited to submit proposals to stage the show in summer 2018. The Great Exhibition is closely aligned to the Government’s flagship Northern Powerhouse initiative to help rebalance the UK economy. The Bradford team will be promoting the city to the bid committee as an ambitious, confident and forward-looking place with a young and diverse population, strong business community, vibrant arts and cultural scene, great transport connections and excellent quality of life.

The Wool Exchange By Caroline Pooley

“
It’s a fascinating place and its Venetian Gothic style and reputation as the centre of the wool world mean it has a trunk full of stories, rumours, gossip and changes.
Next year in 2017 the Wool Exchange will celebrate 150 years since it was built in 1867. The Grade I-listed building on Market Street is rich in history and a place that has touched the lives, careers, hearts and memories of the people of Bradford. It’s a fascinating place and its Venetian Gothic style and reputation as the centre of the wool world mean it has a trunk full of stories, rumours, gossip and changes. Throughout the 19th century, when wool was a very social trade, its role was to play home to the market news, gossip, friendships and business deals which were the chatter throughout the city. The Wool Exchange was a focal point for Bradford - with its prominent clocktower and structure of finely-masoned Bradford sandstone, it was surrounded by fabric, sweet and clothing stores and generated a hum of its own. That buzz is returning to Bradford city centre thanks to the regeneration and new openings
opposite the original Exchange building. The stunning ground floor windows are now home to retailers including eateries, a hairdresser and an occupier of 40 years, Thorntons. The Wool Exchange store was one of three Thornton’s shops in the city, selected for its location because Market Street was then the busiest street. Fast forward to today and the location is Bradford’s beating heart once again, and the only remaining Thornton’s store in the city. The shop is managed by Kay Wilson, one of four full time employees based here, who loves the fact that the Wool Exchange “has its own community and everyone knows each other.” However, it’s the impressive full-height central area of the building used by Waterstone’s and the Café W coffee shop that most people know. The store will celebrate 20 years at the Wool Exchange this October, and is still going from strength to strength, attracting new passing trade from visitors to The Broadway. Manager

Ian Oldfield has worked for Waterstones since the Wool Exchange’s opening day, where he had to wear fancy dress, and says he is “proud to be at the heart of Bradford - Bradford will always be in our hearts!”
Group, announced new investment in the mixed-use, heritage property earlier this year, hoping to cement the city’s pride in the building through investment in its signage, digital and social media presence.
But many are unaware that the original exchange and trading centre, given listed status in 1963, also houses offices above the shops, where today’s exchanges are focussed not on wool but on ideas and intellectual property. The quirkiness of the building gives every area a story - there’s even a fireplace halfway up the foyer wall.
Patrick Naylor from the Eric Wright Group said, “The building’s location in the city centre has always been important, but with current levels of investment regenerating the city’s core, we feel it’s important that this crown jewel is allowed to shine once more, helping future generations continue to discover it via new methods of technology.”
The landlord of the building, Eric Wright

A.A. Dhand The hottest crime writer of the moment, A.A. Dhand, talks to James Collingwood about his Bradford-based novel Streets of Darkness.
“
Bradford has the light and the dark, much like Gotham
A.A. Dhand’s debut novel Streets Of Darkness has been optioned for TV and called Bradford’s version of The Wire. I talked to him about the book and his new detective Harry Virdee Hi Amit, you must be excited about Streets Of Darkness being published on 16 June. Can you tell us something about the main character, Harry Virdee, and his backstory? Was he a character that came to you early in your writing or did he develop over time? Harry Virdee came to my mind ten years ago. A fiercely patriotic Asian man who loves his city and his country. I was tired of seeing clichéd, stereotyped British Asians in literature or on screen and wanted to create a character similar to Luther or Jack Bauer of 24. Harry took some time to form in my mind – I kept straying into caricatures or clichés - but ten years after creating him in my mind I finally nailed the character of the man, and he’s Bradford’s Dark Knight. I’ve always thought Bradford was readymade for a crime thriller but not many crime writers have used it as a setting.
What do you feel are the aspects of this city that suit compelling stories like yours? Crime thrillers in my opinion are strongest when you utilise the edge or darkness of a city. Bradford, with its amazing history and former position as a power on a world stage - the richest city in Europe 100 years ago - is a perfect setting. A city which has real beauty, with the Bronte country and the greenery of the moors, but with satanic mills dotted around the centre. Bradford has the light and the dark, much like Gotham. Like a lot of crime writers you seem to be someone who has had a real life whilst being a writer. Can you tell us something about your work background? Do you feel your work life and experiences have fed into your fiction and if so how? I work as a pharmacist and grew up behind the counter of a corner shop and it certainly helped with observing people and listening to hundreds of miniconversations. It’s a continuous stream of information, and that helped with making conversations in the book authentic. I know from reading your blog you’ve
21
been hammering away at writing for a number of years. Did you get any particular encouragement/inspiration from teachers, venues, community etc. in Bradford or were you self-motivated? I’ve been writing seriously since 2008. It’s been a long hard slog but I am passionate about writing and have never seen it as work or found it arduous. In the early days of 2008 I had some advice and help from a former teacher in Bradford and later I paid for a critique of my novel from professional reviewers. Is there anything you can tell us about the potential TV series with FilmWave at this stage? Will it be based on the first Harry Virdee book or is it going to develop Wire-style over further stories? Can we expect filming in Bradford? FilmWave have secured the option rights for the book and we’re brainstorming on what a script might look like. I’m helping them with this but it’s at the earliest of stages, although they are focused on putting this onto screen and certainly there was fierce competition for the TV rights. The series will be based on the novel and once we arrive at production we can anticipate filming within the city. . Clichéd question this, but which writers have inspired you? Writers who have inspired me are Stephen King, Tess Gerritsen, Dan Brown, Thomas Harris and Lee Child. I love the darkness of Stephen King, the twists with Tess Gerritsen, the pace of Dan Brown, the frightening creations of Thomas Harris (Hannibal) and Lee Child’s Jack Reacher is someone whose attitude and need to carry out justice mirrors Harry Virdee. I understand the book is part of a trilogy. Are the other books already written? The second book in the Harry Virdee series has already been written and submitted to my publisher, awaiting feedback. Streets of Darkness by A.A Dhand was published by Bantam Press on 16 June.

Bradford Festival 2016 City Park will once again play host to the wonderfully eclectic Bradford Festival this month. The event attracted over 150,000 visitors last year and is back 8 -10 July with another impressive programme of events. The council-run festival will feature a mixture of local and international acts covering street theatre, dance, music and art. We’ve put together a five-page preview giving you highlights of what you can expect to see.
Music
An eclectic mix of world music will form the soundtrack to this year’s Bradford Festival. A lineup featuring dance music, brass bands, folk, Asian pop and bhangra, ska, jazz, and Eastern European music is sure to appeal to the district’s broad musical tastes, with all concerts free to the public. Blending traditional Eastern European, Balkan, Gypsy and classical music, Paprika produce rousing and energetic folk music. The five-piece - who feature accordions, violin, drums, bass and guitar - have toured extensively in Europe, Australia, New Zealand and Japan, and have played at the UK’s WOMAD world music festival. Sam and the Womp, whose debut single Bom Bom shot to number one in the 2012 UK music charts and sold over a million copies worldwide, will delight local dance music fans. Fronted by trumpeter and chief rabble-rouser
Sam Ritchie and singer/songwriter Bloom De Wilde, the London band produce a unique and powerful brass-driven dance sound. There will be a chance to see the 2005 winner of the Best International Artist of the UK at the Asian Music Awards, Tarsame Singh Sainiaka Taz from Stereo Nation. Described as the Prince Of Asian Pop, Taz is a pioneer of cross-cultural Asian fusion music and his effervescent Eastmeets-West mix of bhangra, Bollywood and pop has brought him gold and multi-platinum discs. Formerly known as Junai Kaden, Asian pop sensation Jay Kadn will delight Asian music lovers. In 2010 he stormed onto the Asian music scene with a string of number one hits. His debut album quickly rose to number one on the world iTunes chart on its first day of release, and he will release a brand new single live in City Park on the day.
Ska lovers will enjoy London-based Chainska Brassika, rising stars of the UK ska scene. Chainska have supported Madness, The Skatalites, Gentleman’s Dub Club, Easy Star All Stars and played at the Glastonbury Festival and Notting Hill Carnival. Rob Heron and the Tea Pad Orchestra play a unique brand of western swing, blues, gypsy jazz and country. Influenced by early 20th century American music, with the addition of razor-sharp solos, great arrangements and original songs, the six-piece harks back to a golden age whilst still sounding modern. One of the UK’s most versatile and sought after Bollywood acts, 515 Crew, will please local bhangra fans. Three strolling brass bands are set to entertain the City Park crowds during the festival. North Yorkshire’s only contemporary New
Orleans-inspired brass band, New York Brass Band, packs a powerful punch of relentless drums, rumbling tuba and wailing horns. Firm Band Baja infuses the traditional sound of dhol drums with saxophone, trumpet and a custom-made marching snare to recreate some of Bollywood and bhangra’s biggest and best songs. With a diverse repertoire spanning Rajasthani folk songs, Bollywood hits, spiritual qawwali and bhangra beats, the Rajasthan Heritage Brass Band will cover the full range of joyous music from the Indian province. Folk music fans will enjoy the York-based multi-award winning Irish folk musician Paula Ryan and celebrated Leeds acoustic band, Phil Cockerham Trio, and local favourites Gerry Cooper and Phil Snell bring their repertoire of blues, rags and hokum songs from the 1920s and 1930s.
Street Theatre As always, the Bradford Festival will feature a host of colourful, creative and flamboyant street theatre acts - here we bring you some of the details. Award-winning British theatre troupe Ramshacklicious bring a new act featuring trombone, tuba, baritone ukulele and electronic drums with clowning, puppetry, fire and pyrotechnics, whilst Mr & Mr Burn is an explosive, chaotic and offbeat double act where anything can and probably will go wrong! The combustible theme continues with the celebrated British theatre company Plunge Boom’s Smoke, where the character is comically engulfed by fumes pouring from his clothing. Bicycle Bistro by women’s circus theatre company Circo Rum Ba Ba will serve up laughs and delight as two eccentric moustachioed waiters arrive on their bistro on wheels. They lay the table, wind up the gramophone and unleash 40 minutes of choreographed cafe mayhem, with hat juggling, spinning plates, tea dancing, acrobatics, musical saw playing and a surprising table cloth trick. Visitors to Bradford’s premier festival this July will also see a gigantic four-metre tall inflatable elephant parading triumphantly around City Park. The elephant’s mahout will allow a lucky few to take charge of the animal and people will be invited to take photographs of themselves with the beautiful beast. Todmorden-based creators Spacecadets are warning festival goers to be careful though this gentle giant has an unexpected trick up his trunk. Hilarious double act Dan the Hat and DJ Bobble bring Catching and Scratching, a roving street theatre piece blending world-class hat
manipulation with classic tunes and sublime scratching. In George Orange’s Man on the Moon an eccentric clown and dancer from Chicago arrives via the moon, bringing a bit of it with him. The tricks increase in size and complexity, climaxing in a spectacular finale where the audience will help him walk across the moon. Australian Andrew Elliot will perform Jaardu, a cheeky, provocative and flirtatious caricature of an Indian village magician who blends magic, comedy and a very original snake-charming routine. Jaardu was created during Elliot’s time in northern India where he met a group of gypsy magicians known as Madari. Also inspired by the subcontinent, Jay Kumar and Dance Asia will light up City Park with colourful and flamboyant Bollywood dance routines. A Piece of Friendship by Olivia Calder is a beautifully collaborative dance duet inspired by the quirky, comical and often random aspects that make up friendship. Based on the relationship between two dancers, the piece plays on the
recollection of memories and how friendships can take on a life of their own. Complementary local street theatre acts include Bradford Playhouse’s debut of Escape from the Invisible Zoo, Q20 Theatre’s The MirrorMen, Same Difference’s Where is Wendy? and Cecil Green Arts’ Out of the Ashes.
