Wonderlab gallery to open at renamed museum

A state-of-the-art £1.8 million interactive gallery, a new name, and the arrival of astronaut Tim Peake’s spacecraft are among a series of major launches at the National Media Museum this year. The museum, set to become the National Science and Media Museum to reflect its focus on the science behind the magic of photography, film and television, unveiled its new gallery Wonderlab with an opening family weekend on 25 and 26 March. Featuring UK firsts and breathtaking live shows, Wonderlab explores the science of light, sound and images through stateof-the-art exhibits – including some that can’t be seen permanently anywhere else in the world. The Bradford-based museum has also confirmed it will host the world-famous Soyuz TMA-19M spacecraft that carried Major Tim Peake to the International Space Station (ISS) and back to earth. 6 In the News

Explore Little Germany with new heritage app

The Little Germany area has often seemed overlooked, but with the development of the nearby Broadway shopping centre reconnecting the area to the city centre, the residents and business owners of the area have fresh hope that more will see its potential. They have introduced a number of quirky art installations alongside existing features which together form an evolving arts and heritage trail through Little Germany. The app allows visitors to walk through Little Germany and discover the heritage of the area, using Bluetooth technology to display artwork and tell stories which add to the visitor’s experience. The app is available to download from the Android and Apple app stores, and it’s called LGA Heritage Trail.

Launch of art collaboration

Funding boost for Manningham

Three Bradford-based organisations have received over £8,000 of National Lottery funding to Celebrate Manningham. Mind the Gap, Millan Centre and Sharakat Project have been awarded over £8,000 to host three free community events in March, April and May celebrating Manningham. The first event, attended by over 70 people, at Millan Centre on 9 March coincided with International Women’s Day and included a performance by Trishool Dance and keynote speakers including local policewoman PC Fiz Ahmed. The next Celebrate Manningham event will take place on Saturday 8 April in the grounds of Manningham’s historic St Paul’s Church, organised by the Sharakat Project, an interfaith project based at the church. This exciting event will include free food, stalls, children’s activities including a bouncy castle, face painting and an inflatable slide as well as street theatre from Mind the Gap and mendhi henna painting.

ARTbound Community is collaborating with Kala Sangam Arts Centre to bring an exhibition of celebratory artwork to Bradford. New Beginnings will showcase original art works celebrating life, positivity and energy at Kala Sangam Arts Centre in Little Germany from Mon 3 April to Fri 12 May. Yorkshire artists Emma Jane Collinson, Juliette Anne, Phillip Scaife and Sean Rutter will be featuring their creations in the main reception area of Kala Sangam, alongside a sculptural installation, for a six week period.

Politics in the Pub They say politics and pubs shouldn’t mix, but this event has turned the idea on its head following a number of succesful events. by John Atkinson

10 Profile Feature

Who could forget the 2015 election? Farage failing again, Cameron defying the pollsters to claim an unexpected majority, and the indefatigable George Galloway giving way to Naz Shah in one of the most contentious, exciting and widely reported constituency battles of the campaign. The battle for Bradford West wasn’t just about Shah vs Galloway, it gave us the idea for Politics In The Pub, a free monthly night of conversation, debate and discussion. Our first two years have been filled with some fabulous speakers discussing a range of topics - Susan Hinchcliffe, Philip Davies and Richard Corbett MEP talking Brexit, Simon Cooke, Jeanette Sunderland and Dave Green debating devolution, David Ward and Baroness Thornton exploring why voting matters so very much. We’ve had our fair share of non-politicians, too, making sure our events are much, much more than party political broadcasts academics have discussed economics and evidence, and business people have tackled Brexit. It’s been a blast! Politics In The Pub events are great nights to spend a few hours thinking and talking (and drinking) with your friends. All our events are free and happen in one of many pubs in Bradford city centre - it’s important for us to remind people that there’s a city out there waiting for them after work. We begin, as always, with a few jokes about political events, and a vote on the night’s topic. Our favourite response to the vote, which is invariably the majority, is Don’t Know. We love that, we take pride in that, and our speakers revel in that as it shows that our audience is free, openminded and willing to decide, based on the quality of the argument. The panel speaks about the subjects, questions come thick and fast from the floor, and we finish with the same vote and a chance to see how the speakers have influenced our audience.

Our speakers love Politics In The Pub because they get to share their passions, their ideas, their visions for the future, our audience loves it because they get to meet the people who make decisions, get to discuss the future of their country and communities, and get to speak truth to power… something both sides appreciate more than we might expect. Our audience appreciates the quality of our speakers; our speakers appreciate the quality of our audience. It’s a virtuous circle… with great beer. What more could you want? We’ve a few events coming and I’m sure you’ll be interested. In April, with Bradford Civic Society, we’ll be debating regeneration in Bradford’s Independent Quarter. This event will be a little different and we’ll be encouraging much more recorded feedback than usual and presenting the ideas to Bradford Council, making Bradford a better place in which to live and work and love. In May, Reform of the House of Lords is on the agenda with Lord Wallace of Saltaire and the Deputy Chief Executive of the Electoral Reform Society. Over the summer, we’ll also be debating education in Bradford with a host of experts including Bradford East MP Imran Hussain. We’re always looking for ideas for future topics, so if you want it debated, get in touch. Our events are free, open and enjoyable. For more info visit www.bradford.pitp.org.uk

The Tour de Yorkshire

Last year’s Tour de Yorkshire winner Thomas Voeckler, who will be competing again in 2017 in his final year on the tour.

Stage Three: Sunday 30 April – Bradford to Fox Valley, Sheffield, 194.5km (120.9 miles) The decisive stage of this year’s race – ominously titled The Yorkshire Terrier due to its punishing parcours – exits Bradford’s City Park at 12:10pm and takes a scenic trip to the Dales before heading back along the Aire Valley for the first of eight climbs on the Côte de Silsden at 14:04pm. The Côtes de Haworth and Leeming then follow in quick succession at 14:22pm and 14:32pm respectively before the peloton reaches the Côte de Shibden Wall. This cobbled beast will be crested at 14:54pm before an intermediate sprint takes place in Clifton at 15:09pm. There’s no respite as the

race passes into South Yorkshire, and the final sprint points are up for grabs in Stocksbridge at 16:47pm before the weary riders tackle a gruelling 22km concluding loop featuring no less than four categorised climbs. The Côte de Deepcar is first up at 16:52pm and the Côtes de Wigtwizzle (16:58pm) and Ewden Height (17:01) come one after the other before one last drag up the Côte de Midhopestones at 17:07pm. Anyone left in contention after that will duke it out for the stage and overall victory in Fox Valley at 17:15pm.

Bradford Cycle Club: going uphill fast by Phil Jackson

You may have noticed cycling is riding a popularity boost these days, and Bradford is very much caught up in all the interest and activity. Bradford saw some amazing scenes as the Tour de France passed through the district in 2014, with millions packing the roadsides to enjoy the spectacle. The third edition of the Tour de Yorkshire starts its third and final stage from Bradford, the 2019 World Road Cycling Championships looks like being held here, and at a more grassroots level, Bradford Council are working to make Bradford THE Capital of Cycling. Bradford Cycle Club is backing up all this excitement with the plans of Taras Stefanysyn and his colleagues Mick Charlton, Tracey Lee Gill, Pete Carroll, Chris Nelson and the countless volunteers who make Bradford Cycle Club possible. The club has managed to engage areas of the wider community in a way that’s encouraging and exciting for the future of cycling, both in the area and beyond. 18 Profile Feature

Taras is typical of Bradford’s multicultural mix, having a Ukrainian dad and Italian mum. He’s an absolute ball of energy and ideas - spend even a few minutes with him and you’ll be dazzled by the constant flow of ideas and possibilities. “I just want to be positive, and positive for Bradford,” he effuses. Bradford Cycle Club’s partners include Bradford Council, the University of Bradford - including Sports, Physio & Rehabilitation Bradford Bulls, the Bradford Bulls Foundation, Choices for All, Forsters College, Bradford Youth Service, Holmewood PFD and Bradford Disabled Sports & Leisure. They’re also keen to work with other clubs in the area such as the fabulously named Queensbury Queens and Paul Milnes Bradford Olympic RC team, who boast the current junior world cyclo-cross champion, Tom Pidcock.

Photo by Phil Jackson - Avanti Photo

The club’s main objectives are threefold one, to get more folk cycling, thus increasing the health, wellbeing & fitness of Bradford people, two, to improve the fabric and living environment of the district (happier, more inclusive people, less cars, less pollution), and three, the regeneration of Bradford through cycling by attracting events, tourism and more. This year sees their second charity ride to Bradford’s twin town and iconic cycling destination, Roubaix, sponsored by Bradfordbased fashion retailer, La Redoute, whose world headquarters are there. It’s La Redoute’s first year of sponsorship and the plan is to step up their involvement and investment to make next year’s event a high-profile, mass participation event. The La Redoute Bradford To Roubaix Cycle Challenge leaves Bradford on 5 April, cycling to Hull to catch the ferry to Zeebrugge, then cycling to Roubaix, arriving 6 April. Back in Bradford 11 April. The club has planned the event to coincide with the 115th year of the major cycle racing

classic, Paris–Roubaix, a mammoth 160 miles in a day, with large sections of the course ridden over extremely rough cobbles. Participants in the charity ride will be able to get a taste of just what it must be like to ride this event by riding over a couple of short sections of the cobbles, called pavé. The club also organises weekly rides for all abilities, setting off from the Pavilion Café in City Park on Wednesday evenings, Saturday and Sunday mornings. And they’ve partnered with the Bradford Bulls to run Tuesday evening training events at the Bulls Stadium, including technical and know-how sessions. Other plans include bike libraries, park-andrides, buddy matches from around the world, twin town events and much more. If Taras is anything to go by, then like it or not, Bradford streets are going to be inundated with happy cyclists of all shapes and sizes. On the cover... Taaryn Brench by Haigh Simpson

How did you get into illustration? It was a bit of a happy accident to be honest! When I was 25 I decided to retrain as a graphic designer by doing an apprenticeship. Whilst on my course I found I was more drawn to designers who bring in illustration to their work. After I discovered you could actually get paid for drawing pictures, my work just developed from there.

Is your style something you worked towards or did it come naturally? It’s definitely something I’ve worked towards. When I first started out, my background as a designer influenced my work and I found it was too bland and lacking in personality. I spent a lot of time experimenting with different art mediums as a way of getting off the computer and adding my own stamp to my digital work..

Are there any projects you’re particularly proud of ? It’s my personal goal to do more work for good and I was asked by a charity called Safe Partnership to create a set of illustrations to show the services they deliver. Right from the start they were an absolute dream to work with. They knew exactly what they wanted but also gave me

a lot of creative freedom, the feedback they gave was really helpful and they paid on time!

What’s your relationship with Bradford and Bradford? Bradford born and bred! I recently moved back to the area after spending the last eight or nine years in Sheffield. I have really fond memories of being 17 or 18 and hanging out at The Love Apple where people I knew were bringing top bands over to Bradford by putting on their own gig nights - Granadaland, Blank Generation Disco, Dog on Wheels. The music scene was so great around that time, it was a good time to be a teenager!.

Describe your perfect working environment. I do my best work when it’s super quiet and there’s no one else around so maybe a solitary cabin in the woods. One with a big fire though, I get really cold so easily!

What do you like to do when you’re not illustrating? I like to spend my time exploring the natural world, I really enjoy going for walks in the woods or going out to nature reserves.

Hard House DJ Rob Tissera

Battle of the DJs by Haigh Simpson

Martin Cook is aiming to unearth Bradford’s DJ talent through Jump, a new dance music night at the Mill nightclub featuring a DJ competition and a headline slot from Rob Tissera. What gave you the idea to run a DJ competition?

judged differently than a similar event, say 10-15 years ago?

It’s always been difficult to get noticed as a DJ and be given an opportunity with a real crowd to prove yourself as an artist. We’re hoping to give someone that chance to shine.

New DJ tech such as Pioneer’s new XDJRX makes DJing really fun and the things I as a DJ back in 2000 wished for are now possible and then some.

Who can enter and what’s the music policy? The Jump! style is one of progression, starting from funky, chunky 130bpm vocal house through to 150bpm+ hard house/ trance and beyond depending on the DJs but always uplifting and banging. Anyone 18+ can enter the competition by swinging over to our website www. jumptrax.co.uk and checking out our music/mixes. Then simply register, put together a 30 minute mix and submit it before midnight on 22 April for a chance to win one of four one-hour slots on the launch night. The overall winner will become a Jump! resident, as well as a host of other prizes.

Has the response been good so far and what do you make of Bradford’s DJ talent? We’ve had a fantastic response so far with over thirty mixes being submitted already (mid-March) and the entries are coming in from far and wide, so we’re really pleased.

Do you think new technology has changed the art of DJing? Would it be

Are you pleased to have signed up Rob Tissera to play a set on the night too? I couldn’t be more pleased for Rob to be headlining and for that to be at our spiritual home The Mill makes it all the more special! Rob has been my idol since my early days DJing and his style of uplifting, banging dance music fits the Jump! ethos perfectly. I’ve been privileged to work closely with him in the studio over the last few months and can’t wait for us to drop our latest collaboration exclusively at the Jump! launch night.

Can you tell us a bit about your own background in DJing and promotion? I was a resident DJ in Leeds back in 1999/2000 playing house, trance and hard house to 1000s of clubbers every week... Now, 17 years on, I’m married to my beautiful wife Victoria (a fellow Club Uropa clubber) have three lovely kids, a Siberian husky and run a small software development company but I never stopped loving the music! I’ve never done anything like Jump! before but I’m hoping it will be a new venture that’s supported and becomes as loved as Parlez-Vous which was one of my favourite regular events at The Mill.

The enchanting Wild Woods events return to Darley street as part of the Creative Streets project.

by Kate Wellham

Last year a former department store on a formerly busy shopping street in Bradford city centre suddenly sprouted back into life and became The Wild Woods. This new indoor woodland space hosted film screenings, live music, food, drink and fun activities for everyone in Bradford and beyond, curated by Bradford-based national arts organisation The Brick Box. Creativity and community spirit filled the space once dominated by retail, and the benefits for Bradford were bountiful. The Wild Woods events had the very tangible effect of bringing thousands of people back into the street, each spending money at local businesses and having a great time doing it. Investment was quadrupled, partnerships were forged, and seeds were planted for Bradford’s future as a creative capital. Now the Wild Woods are back for a final run of events before The

Love that Apple - again It’s 20 years since the Love Apple opened in Bradford, and it’s former owners are celebrating with a tribute gig to one of the city’s best-loved venues. by Michael Mullan

32 Preview Featur

Next month a unique chapter in Bradford’s history will be marked with an event that celebrates the city’s creative spirit. The chapter is the story of the Love Apple Café-Bar-Club, which flourished in the city’s West End as a hub of artistic and intellectual culture, including indie music and dance nights. The event aims at a one-off reincarnation of that legendary venue in the heart of the old town centre. On 19 May the former Marks’n’Sparks on Darley Street will be home to a party for the 20th anniversary of the original Love Apple’s creation. The Apple opened in 1997, at the Randall Well end of Great Horton Road, partly because the city needed a new space for people to enjoy the food, the people, the music and the ideas that they loved. Behind the venture were solicitor Parvez Iqbal and art student Victoria Brett, who met in the Java, a bohemian café that then stood opposite the Alhambra stage door. Both felt the multicultural city had undercurrents of creative energy that needed a home. Instead of waiting for it to happen, they made it their mission. And so began the rollercoaster ride. Vic’s brother, chef Jim Brett, whose signature chicken burritos were the most popular dish on the menu, became part of the adventure. “It was the right thing to do, and we made a difference”, says Jim. “We touched a lot of lives. We supported each other, but it was a bigger family than the three of us. For a lot of people, the Apple became a home.” Pav and Vic changed careers after the Apple went bust, but both are proud of what it achieved. Even the University prospectus used to single out the Love Apple among the reasons why students should choose

Bradford. The nearby campus was good for the lunchtime trade. Every graduation day was celebrated with champagne at the Apple, and Peace Studies always held their parties there.

“A lot of people could identify with what we were trying to do”, says Pav. “It was a safe place for people to enjoy good company, with fresh, wholesome food, an inclusive atmosphere, decent sound engineering, real ales...” While most of the city’s other venues favoured only DJs and cover bands, the Apple specialised in the offbeat and original. Disoriental nights introduced Bradford to some exciting world music, The Demon Barbers brought cutting-edge contemporary folk song and dance, and many young West Yorkshire bands found an audience for live, original performance with promotions like Granadaland, Random Sherlock or Dog on Wheels. Local rock legends Rob Heaton and Denny Austin ran the Fresh Milk project, encouraging new bands, at the Apple and MacRory’s Bar. Club nights were equally diverse. The late Steve Wood’s eclectic house night Aura would range from Irish traditional music to his own electronica, and other promoters built cult followings for regular sessions like Original Heroes/Trainer Trouble, Subculture, Worship, Kaos, Bops and Shrug. The 2006 Big Gig, a free festival of live music over four days in July and mostly in the open air, was a highlight in the Apple’s story. For those who were there it may be hard to accept that is already 11 years ago, and there’s not even a blue plaque on Bradford College’s new building, sited on the very car park where thousands rocked to Wilful Missing, Analog Bombs and Sol Gravy – among some 40 acts, ranging from Angelo Palladino’s classic blues to Groovement’s reggae-jazz, via This Et Al’s indie dance-rock and witty ballads by Belinda O’Hooley.

Preview Feature 33

That historic event reflected the Love Apple’s unique ability to draw together an eclectic array of talents, united by goodwill. It was a huge success – but it didn’t miraculously solve the financial difficulties that were beginning to engulf a small family enterprise. The Apple was of course an art gallery as well as a music and dance venue with a restaurant. Creativity was its moving spirit from start to finish. Victoria curated the exhibitions, with many local painters and printmakers having their first selling shows around the walls of the Apple’s dining room. Its proximity to the Alhambra helped make it a favourite with visiting stars. Pav and Vic were frankly struggling to make a living when the great crunch came. The smoking ban, which most people welcomed, wasn’t what killed the original Love Apple. The growth of corporate pub chains, whose economies of scale enabled them to undercut food and drink prices in the independent sector, was another factor. Banks became positively hostile to lending to small enterprises and as Pav and Vic had two daughters to raise, they had to pull the plug.

34 Preview Feature

“The fact is, most new businesses fold after a couple of years – and a new restaurant is lucky to survive one year,” Pav reflects. “The Love Apple was very successful in that way. It was a triumph of hope over economics.” Love Apple customers, staff, musicians, artists and friends will convene on Friday 19 May in the former M&S store in Darley Street, made available by Brick Box and Wild Wood, to recapture some of the Love Apple magic. The party will raise funds for Bradford NightStop, a charity offering emergency accommodation for homeless young people. The music will naturally be an exciting mix - jazz-rock from Bingley’s finest Flukes, Caribbean-flavoured pop from Riders In The Ska and Vic’s soul band, Rum Gargle, with a pop-up café-bar-club and some surprises promised. Not so much a commemoration then, as a celebration of what Bradford can do when it puts its big heart into it.

Favourite place to hang around in and around Bradford? Valley Parade.

Local event you could not live without? Bradford City home games – I’m lost out of season!

Local business you admire? There are so many but if I had to pick one it would be The Sparrow, who took a chance and toughed it out for a couple of years on North Parade.

Local person you admire (past or present)? You can probably guess but it’s got to be Stuart McCall. I’ve watched him play for City from the mid-eighties and now he’s back as manager, some 30 odd years later.
