Council to launch revamped cycling strategy

Photography competition to find Bradford’s best view

The strategy sets out the ambition of ‘making Bradford district a place where cycling is naturally part of everyone’s daily life’.

Visitors to Bradford are being encouraged to share their favourite view of Bradford and district on social media using the hashtag #enjoybradford for the chance to win a weekend break for two in the city.

An updated Bradford District Cycling Strategy was unveiled at a meeting of Bradford Council’s Overview and Scrutiny Committee for Environment and Waste on Tuesday 18 April.

Its aim is to make cycling accessible for all with improvements to infrastructure, increase training opportunities and sporting activities as well as engaging people from across the cycling community and beyond. The strategy covers the full range of ways that people can get involved in cycling from sports and club related participation and cycling as a leisure activity to cycling as a mode of transport for getting to work and school. 6 In the News

Visit Bradford has launched an online competition to find the best view in Bradford and district.

Patricia Tillotson, tourism manager at Visit Bradford, said, “Bradford is such a unique destination. After all, where else can you enjoy a great city, two amazing UNESCO world heritage sites, stunning countryside and fascinating heritage? As well as finding the best view in Bradford, we hope that the competition will help people find new ways to explore and enjoy everything has to offer. The competition is now open and we can’t wait to see Bradford and the surrounding areas through the eyes of those who work in, live in and travel to the district.”

Oastler Centre to be replaced by new Darley Street Market

Bradford Council has taken an option to purchase the former Marks & Spencer building on Darley Street as part of a major ÂŁ15 million development scheme to regenerate the top end of Bradford, revitalise the city centre markets and support local trade. The proposal would see a new food-focussed market open in the former Marks & Spencer building in Darley Street. As part of the same proposal, Kirkgate Market would receive a face lift as the result of significant investment to redesign it. It would be the biggest investment in the Market since it opened in 1974. Once the work on the markets is complete and open to the public, the Oastler Centre would close. The Council would seek to redevelop the site, focussing on city centre housing, creating a new community which would support both markets and North Parade as the local high street. Consultations are being held with market traders, local businesses and other interested parties to gather their views.

Take Back Control Bradford by Karen Evans

Paul Mason, the award-winning journalist, author and broadcaster, has been revealed as the keynote speaker at Take Back Control Bradford on Saturday 6 May. Take Back Control Bradford aims to explore how the people of Bradford can unite to improve community relationships, living standards and future prospects for the city. The radical socialist democrat’s speech will be one of the highlights of the event on Saturday 6 May 2017 at Kala Sangam.

Volunteer Tariq Jabber said, “A snap general election has just been called but, despite the slogans of the referendum campaign, control is the very last thing people feel any of us have. Most of our politicians on all sides of the EU debate seem to be caught up in the inexorable chaos of the process whilst health, social care, education, jobs, the economy, transport, public services and justice are all failing. These are the sorts of issues that matter to the people of Bradford, and through our programme we want to offer them a forum to express their views and ideas about improving all aspects of life in Bradford.”

Other speakers include Naz Shah MP, Hilary Wainwright of Red Pepper, Dawn Foster of The Guardian, writer and film director Paul Sng and vlogger Jonathan James. Small World Festival hits the Big Screen by Julie Gatenby

“Film festivals are always full of surprises, which is perhaps what makes them so wonderful,” muses David Wilson, director of Bradford UNESCO City of Film. David and his small team have their sleeves rolled up for what is rapidly becoming the busiest time of the year as they curate the first of three film festivals for 2017 from their offices at the University of Bradford. The Small World Film Festival 2017 has indeed unearthed both filmic surprises and delights from across the UNESCO Creative Cities Network - a thriving and growing conglomeration of 116 cities from 54 countries. The network has seven creative fields - crafts & folk art, design, film, gastronomy, literature, music and media arts. Bradford had the honour of being designated as UNESCO’s first City of Film in 2009. It was when David decided to make the UNESCO network the focus of this year’s Small World Festival, using the theme My City, that the creative elements of all the cities came together seamlessly through the medium of film. “The response to the brief has been overwhelming,” said David. “More than half the network got involved and from their filmmakers we’ve seen beautiful animation, documentaries and dramas that reveal quintessential stories about individuals and the cities in which they live.

18 Preview Feature

“This huge interest really demonstrates that film can unify all our cities and act as catalyst through which we can show to the rest of the world those elements which make our cities unique, special and absolutely worth visiting.” With an ardent passion for film, it’s the talent of the filmmakers that drives David to create festival space to showcase work here in Bradford from around the world. “What has been great is the range of filmmakers who’ve got involved. We have films made on mobile phones right through to those made by large production houses. This gives the festival some real depth and so many different perspectives,” said David, “The quality of the cinematography used to reveal stories of cities, for example about Detroit in the USA, Montreal in Canada, Santos in Brazil and the ancient city of Bamyan in Afghanistan, has been breathtaking. We’ve seen stunning animation employed by filmmakers from Nagoya in Japan to tell the story of their city. “In some of the entries filmmakers have used humour that we can all empathise with to tell stories of living in busy urban environments. One entry from Rome reveals through comedy the incredulity of a young man who manages to find a car park directly outside his city apartment for the first time ever - and the hilarious celebrations that ensue. This film really has international appeal.

“ Some of the films have taken us on fascinating historical journeys, like the entry from Sofia in Bulgaria, where the filmmakers narrate their city’s history using the motif of the iconic yellow cobblestones that wind through this most eclectic of places.” For the team at Bradford UNESCO City of Film, the essence of the Small World Film festival has been about taking the people of Bradford on journeys of discovery to stories and places that are not always well known. “I think we’ve achieved this for 2017”, said David, “and with some real diversity in terms of subject matter - from the delicate process of porcelain-making in Jingdezhen, China, to the hypnotic story of riverside life in Paducah in the US state of Kentucky.” And that only scratches at the surface of this year’s programme for the Small World Film Festival which can be seen for free throughout June on Bradford’s Big Screen. All films which met the criteria will be screened on Bradford Big Screen every lunchtime and early evening throughout June and a selection of the films - chosen by this year’s Bradford People’s Panel - will be shared at a

special screening at the UNESCO Creative Cities annual meeting in Enghien les Bains, France later in the month. All films will be made available for display on the UNESCO Creative Cities website. Bradford is also liaising with the city of Santos in Brazil, who recently joined the network as a UNESCO City of Film. There’s a plan to exhibit the films from the Small World Film Festival at the third edition of the Santos Coffee Festival in July 2017.

Bradford People’s Panel The high standard of films will be a challenge for this year’s People’s Panel who will meet once again at City Hall, Bradford on Thursday 15 June at 6pm to judge the entries. There are 60 places on the People’s Panel. Any member of the public with an interest in film can get involved so should you wish to take part please email bradford.unesco@gmail. com to reserve a place, issued on a first come first served basis.

Hops & Shops by Laura Wigglesworth

The Hops & Shops market is an innovative new event, held on the first Sunday of every month between 4 and 7pm. It’s the brainchild of Molly Nicholas of Bradford Brewery and Laura Wigglesworth of local independent business Lozzie Ozzie. Laura says, “There’s a huge range of talented hand crafters and makers in and around Bradford, and as one of these small businesses I could see a real lack of local markets aimed at these traders. As a small business every penny counts, and I really wanted to create a niche market that would be both affordable and accessible to traders. I approached Bradford Brewery with my idea and Hops & Shops was born!” Bradford Brewery is generously providing the space for free and this saving is passed onto traders with free pitches and card payment facilities. Bradford Brewery’s cosy venue lends itself so well to Hops & Shops – it’s a compact market, hosting only five traders at a time, and the unique offerings are what make it really special. In the short while it has been running traders have included jewellery by Wildheart, a selection of handmade goodies showcased by the Handmade Alternative, vegan-friendly and cruelty-free bath and body products by Selene, artwork and quirky gifts by Hustler By Name, and of course Lozzie Ozzie’s very own brand of cheeky mugs and gifts, amongst many others.

“On the first Sunday of every month at Bradford Brewery we’re joined by an eclectic bunch of local crafters and artists, bringing some amazing local talent to our cosy venue,” says Molly. “I’m so proud of the range of exciting artworks and crafts, it’s opened my eyes to Bradford’s ever growing craft scene, and the amount of talent hiding in every corner of the district.” Molly and Laura are extremely passionate about growing Hops & Shops, “We have some great ideas lined up for events throughout the year and are really excited about growing our event into something truly special. We’re always on the lookout for any ideas from people – either traders or customers. Hops & Shops has a really cooperative feel about it, which is fantastic, and we want to strengthen this as we continue to grow.” Laura believes that anything goes at Hops & Shops, “In fact – the quirkier the better! We have very few rules other than legal requirements, and this has really opened the doors to some wonderful and unique goods. You must make your own products, have current Public Liability Insurance, not offer any copyright infringement items, and follow any necessary regulations for your area. Other than that, the world is your oyster.” Keep up to date on the Bradford Brewery Facebook page where you can find details of upcoming events, or email lozzieozzie@hotmail.co.uk for more information.

Dealing with Darley Street by Si Cunningham

‘Put a roof over Darley Street!’ public tell senior councillors at packed regeneration debate

30 CommunityFeature

Covering Darley Street with a glass canopy, building a Victorian-style tramway, and opening a new central film studio were just some of the more ambitious ideas suggested by members of the public at a debate held in Bradford last week. The debate, titled How do you solve a problem like Darley Street? was the first collaboration between Bradford Politics In The Pub and Bradford Civic Society. Inside a packed New Beehive pub audience members heard opposing views on how to regenerate the Top of Town area, with Councillor Alex Ross-Shaw beginning by outlining the council’s latest Darley Street proposals in detail. Councillor Ross-Shaw revealed that the plan to create a new food-focussed market on Darley Street in the former M&S building and demolish the Oastler Market was a ‘three to four year project’. He told the audience that freeing up the Oastler site for housing would support North Parade’s role as a high street, and also committed to comprehensive public realm works for the area. However Councillor Simon Cooke was sceptical of the council’s plan and its lack of long-term vision, and presented an alternative solution based on Will Alsop’s original masterplan for Bradford. Councillor Cooke said that shifting bits of the city centre around was like ‘robbing Peter to pay Paul’ and argued that a housing development on the Oastler Market site was ‘not deliverable’. Instead, he pushed for more of Will Alsop’s radical masterplan to be realised, with a new city centre park created at the top of town. The third and final panellist to speak was David Craig, designer and director of Assembly Bradford. David said that further retail was not the answer to the city centre’s problems and encouraged the Council to make the city centre a place where the next generation will choose to live, work and play. Of the Darley Street proposals,

David emphasised the need for high quality design. “I’d like to see opportunities for cohousing, green spaces, live-work units and enterprise, not just a bunch of homogenous 40-square-metre one-bed flats,” he said. Audience members were also given the opportunity to suggest and discuss their own ideas on how to rejuvenate Darley Street and the surrounding area, with opinion firmly divided over the Council’s latest proposals. Dermot Bolton, co-founder of Bradford Politics In The Pub, said, “We’re really pleased with the event last night, a great crowd of really engaged Bradfordians. While there was disagreement there was unity in the passion people feel for our city and the desire to make it a better place. We need more public discussion like this, and at @BD_PiP we’re doing our bit to make it happen.” Si Cunningham, vice-chair of Bradford Civic Society, said, “We heard some awesome suggestions from some very imaginative Bradfordians. You only have to look at City Park to see that when Bradford thinks bigger it gets better, which is why I’d love to see some of last night’s more radical ideas for Darley Street seriously considered by the council. Civic pride is alive and kicking in Bradford, so it’s only right that everyone has a say in how the city centre develops.” All suggestions and issues raised at the debate will now be collated into a ‘people’s report’, which will be submitted to Bradford Council as they finalise their plans for the city centre.

An Uncommon visit to Cliffe Castle by Andy Abbott

34 Preview Featur

UnCommons is a series of events from Recon, Bradford Threadfest and M@BU (Music at Bradford University), bringing together live music, performance, installations and interactive technology in unusual spaces in and around Bradford. So far we’ve had events at the former Marks & Spencer on Darley Street, working with The Brick Box in their Wild Woods installation, and an after party for the National Science and Media Museum’s Lates event at the Delius Arts and Cultural Centre in the German Church. The events have included silent gigs - live performances tuned into via headphones - virtual reality and augmented reality experiences, a European noise-rock showcase, movement-reactive projections and sound installations, amplified drawings, 360 video hotspots and psychedelic thumb piano busking. For the third edition we’re working with Bradford Museums and Galleries to offer an exclusive alternative exploration of one of the district’s - if not the UK’s - most unusual and eccentric heritage museums, Cliffe Castle in Keighley. If you’ve not visited Cliffe Castle before you’re in for a treat. Without wanting to spoil the surprises in store there’s something for everyone - from preserved Victorian rooms to two headed lambs, natural and social history galleries, endless rooms of taxidermy, a Chewbacca toy (the actor was from Keighley) and the intriguing ‘wife rocker’ alongside an internationally important display of stained glass by Morris and Co. Performances and contributions come from composer, musician, producer and sound artist James Mabbett, aka Napoleon IVth, who has worked with Bob McDougall to document

buildings and institutions, using sounds recorded within these places and including both the public and users of the building in the final production. Creative technologist and artist Joanne Armitage will offer a workshop sharing her skills with sound, physical computing, digital media and interaction design and focused on turning objects into instruments. Reet Maff’l is a spoken word and sound collage duo who have developed siteresponsive and context-specific sets for a variety of scenarios, including performing in a spaceship on top of Matt’s Gallery in London and an augmented reality futuristic tour of Derby’s Silk Mill Museum. They offer a surreal take on some of the museum’s collections and objects. Artists Amelia Crouch, Luke Drozd and Katch Skinner have been commissioned by South Square Gallery in Thornton to create new objects and works for the Cliffe Castle gift shop. These works, spanning print, ceramics and a special tea towel, will also be displayed at South Square Gallery throughout May and June. Daru Rooke, the area museum manager for Bradford Museums and Galleries, will offer a special guided tour of Cliffe Castle Museum during which you may get chance to ask him about choosing the hairy pelt of Benicio del Toro in the 2010 horror movie The Wolfman. UnCommons #3 takes place Sunday 28 May 2017 at Cliffe Castle, Keighley BD20 6LH from 1 - 4pm. The event is free, but bring some money for the limited edition souvenirs in the gift shop! Check www.bradford.ac.uk/ music for updates.

Graham Hall

Graham Hall is the property developer behind the Sunbridge Wells tunnels complex. Favourite place to hang around in and around Bradford? Sunbridge Wells, would be my obvious answer. The majority of my time over the past 10 years has been my most focused project.

Local event you could not live without? Any events in the city and surrounding areas which draw in the crowds and bring everyone together to our wonderful cultured city, Bradford.

Local business you admire? I have the upmost respect and enthusiasm that Mandi Iles from The Quality Yorkshire Pie Company & Binns Quality Meats shows in their business which clearly feeds back to the public.

Local person you admire (past or present)? Tom Courtney (Billy Liar), which showcased Bradford. Thought provoking times, prominent and one the of most memorable universally acclaimed films of the 60’s.
