Positive forecast from chief economist The Bank of England’s chief economist has predicted a bright future for Bradford during a two day trip to the city.

Andy Haldane visited Dixons City Academy where he gave a lecture on economics before visiting attractions including the £1.9million Sunbridge Wells development during his trip. In a speech at the National Science and Media Museum, he said, “I am delighted to see civic and commercial investment beginning to return to Bradford over the past few years. Those scars are starting to heal.” “Compared with when I last visited a few years ago, there is now a real sense of opportunity and optimism in Bradford, lifting the spirits of the businesses operating here and the people living here.” He was in the city as part of the Bank of England’s efforts to speak to a wider cross-section of people from across the country.

£17m station revamp moves a step closer

Plans to redevelop Bradford Forster Square railway station to provide a welcoming new gateway to the city have moved a step closer to becoming a reality after being given initial approval by councillors. The proposals were among a series of transport schemes being discussed at the latest West Yorkshire Investment Committee meeting of the West Yorkshire Combined Authority. The proposed new £17m Forster Square Station building is set to provide an attractive gateway to Bradford with a new cafe, information centre, new toilets and seating, parking for 75 cars and a community garden and meadow area. A report to the committee said this investment could help to boost Bradford’s profile as a place to live and work and act as a catalyst for further investment. Four existing station arches could also be used for a newsagents, cycle parking, a mess room for rail staff and a storage room for equipment for the community garden as part of the redevelopment. Bradford Council has earmarked £250,000 towards the scheme.

Malachi Whitaker: the Bradford Chekhov by Claire Gibbons

When one thinks of Yorkshire authors it’s difficult not to immediately think of J.B. Priestley and the Brontes, and, after a little dig around the brain cells, more contemporary writers such as John Braine, A.A. Dhand and Bradford-based Michael Stewart might spring to mind. But ask anyone if they have ever read any books by - or even heard of - Malachi Whitaker, and one is likely to be greeted by a puzzled shake of the head. Hopefully all that is about to change, thanks to a new collection of short stories to be published by Persephone Books in October of this year, with an introductory launch event at the Ilkley Literature Festival. Malachi Whitaker was born in Wrose, Bradford in 1895, the eighth of eleven children of a master bookbinder. Books were her escape and she wrote her first poem aged just four whilst lying under a tree. Her father was impressed and handed her a sixpence, which she spent immediately! Her second poem didn’t fare so well, but this didn’t stop Malachi - born Marjorie Olive Taylor - writing profusely throughout her youth, not least her own autobiography, aged just 20, which racked up an impressive 50,000 words. The Journey Home And Other Stories is a selection of twenty short stories taken from four out-ofprint collections by Malachi Whitaker published between 1929 and 1934, when she was dubbed ‘the Bradford Chekhov’ by reviewers. This new collection will be the first substantial volume of Whitaker’s stories since the 1980s and the only one in print. Valerie Waterhouse is a journalist and editor for Time Out and other publishers and has been working with the Whitaker family and Persephone on the new publication. She spoke about Malachi Whitaker at Ilkley Literature Festival Fringe in 2015, to commemorate 120 years since her birth. I asked Valerie about her involvement with the new collection and her knowledge of, and interest in, this neglected local author.

“I first came across Malachi Whitaker in The Oxford Book of English Short Stories, edited by A.S. Byatt, where her story Landlord Of The Crystal Fountain appeared, wedged between pieces by Aldous Huxley and V.S. Pritchett. I later learned that Malachi and her husband, Leonard, lived for a while on Addingham Moorside, close to Ilkley, where I grew up and went to school. I found it impossible to believe that no one I talked to seemed to have heard of her – and contacted her son Michael Whitaker, then in his eighties, to find out more.” Following the event at ILF, Valerie was contacted by Nicola Beauman, publisher of Persephone books, and novelist Philip Hensher. Michael Whitaker and Valerie then worked with Persephone and Hensher to approve the 20 stories for this new collection. “The idea was to include a good balance of stories from each of Malachi’s four volumes. The result is a mix of thoughtful, more reflective pieces and stories that showcase Malachi’s talent for the comic and absurd,” added Valerie. Following the publication of her memoir And So Did I in 1939, Malachi announced her retirement from writing, although several new stories and articles and a collection of previously published pieces were published after this date. Valerie, the publishers, and the Whitaker family would like to see this new book put Malachi Whitaker firmly back on the Bradford author map. “I find the lack of recognition from Bradford puzzling and am unable to explain exactly why this should be,” Valerie commented, “Perhaps it’s because Malachi never wrote a novel. Perhaps it’s because she wasn’t a great self-promoter. Perhaps it’s because she was a woman. Or perhaps it’s because her achievements at a national and international level weren’t apparent when viewed from up close. “Whatever the reason, let’s hope The Journey Home helps to resurrect pride and interest in her as a Yorkshire literary figure. If a statue outside the former library, next to JB Priestley, isn’t possible, it would be nice, at least, to see her name on a brass plaque - or two or three!”

Bradford Science Festival will bring three days of fun, experiments and exploration to the city centre this July, with dinosaurs roaming through The Broadway shopping centre and a live crime investigation in the National Science and Media Museum. The Festival is re-launching in a new format following a year off in 2016 and will aim to inspire a new generation of science-lovers in Bradford. Festival organiser Robin Dark said, “We’ve got some fantastic acts and activities from all over that will really help raise the profile of science across the whole district.” The launch event on Friday 14 July will take place in the National Science & Media Museum with a special edition of the popular Lates events, featuring the usual mix of interactive entertainment, as well as a preview of the museum’s summer exhibition Supersenses. Expect something similar to the Wonderlab launch with a big, fun event to kick off the weekend’s proceedings. Over the weekend there will be activities in the Museum, The Broadway and in City Park. A range of community groups, attractions, scientific organisations, plus the college and university will be helping create a familyfriendly festival themed around science, technology, engineering and maths. “It will be very much focused on Bradford, the people and places. It will be a chance for everyone to come down and get in that festival spirit,” said Robin. In line with this, the festival hopes to appeal to disadvantaged groups and people who don’t always have the opportunity to engage with science in a fun way. “We want to show them that there’s science in everything and really inspire those who come to the event.”

Ten Light Years: The Photography of Liza Dracup

by Angela Sheard

Amazingly, it’s ten years since Impressions Gallery opened its doors in Centenary Square with an exhibition by Bradford bornand-bred photographic artist Liza Dracup. This summer Impressions is presenting Field Work, a major exhibition of Liza’s work since Sharpe’s Wood, her first solo show at the gallery in 2007. “I’m inspired by the landscape and natural history of Britain”, says Liza, “and I’m always trying to find innovative approaches to representing our environment”. For Sharpe’s Wood, a series of nocturnal woodland landscapes, Liza spent the hours between dusk and dawn photographing in almost total darkness. The mesmerising, painterly images she produced are lit by the constant waxing and waning of the moon, fleeting car headlights, or the glow of street lamps. The work was exhibited at Impressions’ first ever show in Bradford and proved a hit with visitors.

20 Preview Feature

Angela Sheard, exhibition curator, says, “It’s an enormous coup for Bradford to be holding the first major survey exhibition of Liza’s work. She has become a nationally important artist, who has stayed true to her roots in Bradford. She’s developed a reputation as an innovator in landscape photography, and it’s a great opportunity for us to bring together the many wonderful bodies of artwork she’s produced over the last decade”. As well as working directly with the natural world Liza finds inspiration in museum collections. She’s worked with some of Yorkshire’s finest, including the Natural Science Collections of Bradford Museums & Galleries, the historic landscape photographs in the Harrogate Fine Art Collection, Insight at the former National Media Museum, and the paintings of Victorian painter Atkinson Grimshaw. For Chasing The Gloaming (2011), commissioned by the Mercer Art Gallery, Harrogate, Dracup responded to Atkinson Grimshaw’s famous moonlit landscapes, as well as his lesser known still-life paintings. Seeking the unfamiliar within the familiar, her photographic studies illuminate landscapes

from inner-city Leeds and rural edges of Bradford, to the coast of Yorkshire. Re: Collections (2013) saw Liza delve into the captivating but rarely seen taxidermy collection of Bradford Museums & Galleries. Her photographs present birds and mammals as still life studies, made timeless by both taxidermist and photographer. These hauntingly beautiful, yet eerie images raise questions about our emotional relationship to British wildlife and its conservation. For her most recent series, Landmarks (2016), Liza investigated botanic specimens and the landscape of northern England. She was also intrigued by stereoscopic imagery, a nineteenth century 3D technique. Curator Angela Sheard explains, “Liza is inspired by historic photographic processes as well as digital techniques. What I love about her work is the way she uses photography as an experimental tool to see beyond the human eye. Her images are both magical and mysterious.” Not all of Liza’s work is concerned with the natural world, however. Lister’s Mill: A Topographical View (2008) was made as part of her work with photography collective Bradford Grid, a group of photographers 22 Preview Feature

seeking to map and document the city. Her images feature the recurring motif of the iconic chimney of Lister’s Mill. The mill was once the world’s largest silk factory, and its chimney – a familiar landmark to Bradfordians – is seen from various viewpoints in the post-industrial landscape. It’s a fitting tribute to her much-loved home city. “I’m thrilled to be presenting ten years of my work at Impressions, one of the best photography galleries in the UK,” says Liza. “My photographic journey over the last decade has led me to many places and collections, and I’m always trying to find the extraordinary in the ordinary within the northern landscape. I hope everyone who visits Field Work enjoys the show and gets inspired by the ways that photography can make us see the world differently. I’d like to thank Impressions for supporting my work and making this exhibition possible in my home city.” Field Work: Ten Years of Photography by Liza Dracup will be shown at Impressions Gallery from 7 July to 23 September, with an opening celebration on Saturday 8 July, 2 to 4pm. Admission is free. www.impressions-gallery.com

North Parade Music & Arts Festival by Gail Dignam

In 2014, a team of independent business owners and friends decided to take over North Parade for one sunny day in July. Local food and drink traders, musicians and performers, all came together to create the first ever North Parade Street Party, not yet realising that they were part of what would become a much anticipated annual event for the city centre.

26 Peview Feature

The thought process behind the planning was to showcase the burgeoning street’s unique offerings, and bring the local area and businesses together in a day of food, drink, music and Bradfordness. The event has gone on to embody the regeneration of the area known as the ‘top of town’ and has grown in popularity each year since its launch. Preparations are under way for the fourth event, now rebranded the North Parade Music & Arts Festival. The demographic of North Parade has changed dramatically, with a number of new bars, letting and recruitment agencies joining long-serving businesses on the street such as Bradford Camera Exchange and F.C. Milnes. The changing dynamics of North Parade can be traced back to 2011, pre-street party, when Les Hall and his business partner took the plunge and opened The Sparrow Bier Café, with the core ethos being to provide a variety of quality beers, supported with locally sourced food offerings. This bold move started a local revolution, which has paved the way for Bradford to compete with bigger towns. Les, who has been involved with the event since the very first day, says, “Bradford has a feel, a certain type of atmosphere, a certain type of person. It is different, and always will be.” The 2017 event is scheduled for Saturday 22 July and the organisers are still working

together as a united team of independent business owners. They are now also able to count on the support of Bradford Council and the city centre management team, who have recognised the cultural and economic value of the event. Live music will be available at both ends of North Parade. The Upper Piccadilly / Napoleons Casino stage will have local bands showcasing their great sounds, and the Manor Row Stage presents a range of uniquesounding local soloists. And in between there’ll be a wide range of food, drink and independent craft based businesses, a Print Fair and family entertainment. Steve Shaw of Al’s Dime Bar has been helping the core committee since year one. He said, “North Parade Street Party is an opportunity to show the people of Yorkshire and beyond what can be achieved with unity, ambition, community spirit and hard work. Parading what each business can offer the general public, whilst embodying a vibrant community spirit, which is so important for the progress of any society wishing to make a valued difference to today’s Britain.” North Parade Music & Arts Festival is on Saturday 22 July on North Parade in Bradford city centre. Big birthday bash for local hero Hockney by Anys Williams

Hockneymania will sweep the streets of Bradford this summer, as the opening of the brand new permanent David Hockney gallery at Cartwright Hall is celebrated with a Happy Birthday Hockney party for the Bradford-born artist’s 80th birthday on Sunday 9 July. Local arts and community interest organisation The Brick Box have been handed the task of transforming Lister Park into a creative and colourful celebration on the day, with fun for all the family, including arty activities, food, drink and music. Hebden Bridge heroes Handmade Parade are celebrating with a plethora of puppets, which will on parade throughout the day. The puppets and costumes, themed around Hockney’s vibrant work, lifestyle and image, will be made in workshops by five local community groups from around the Bradford district, and hosted by Handmade Parade. The colourful commission will also feature a large Hockney cake, set to be unveiled during a mass singalong of Happy Birthday in celebration of the birthday boy.

Movers and shakers can take part in the Hockney disco, inspired by one of the Yorkshireman’s best loved quotes, “I hate background music - I only like music in the foreground”. As local DJs blast hit songs from past and present loud and proud in the park, guests will receive a blonde toupee and round glasses from the Hockneyfication Station before they hit the dance floor. The gallery and Brick Box teams will be working closely with people of the same generation as Hockney in a number of Bradford care homes and day centres, to create People In The Landscape - a giant photo montage forming a stunning image of local Bradford landscapes. The montage will play homage to Hockney’s more recent photographic work, allowing audiences to explore these techniques through the prism of Bradford lives, landscapes and

history. The montage will be displayed in Cartwright Hall’s Garden Gallery, and scaled down images of the participants will also be displayed. There’ll be plenty of activities for kids to discover their creative side, and artist Fabric Lenny will host a space for kids to practice iPad drawing, one of Hockney’s current favourite methods of art. The Brick Box are using their extensive networks and local connections with theatre groups and casting agencies to hire and direct five actors who will portray five different periods of David Hockney’s career. The actors will interact with audiences and will be able to offer specialist knowledge about his lifestyle, history and interests, as well as being knowledgeable about his artistic practice and techniques. Jill Iredale, curator of the Hockney gallery at Cartwright Hall Art Gallery, commented, “There’s no better place to celebrate Hockney’s birthday than the city where he grew up and was inspired to become an artist. We’re really excited to bring local people together to give David the big birthday bash that he deserves - hopefully the whole Bradford community will be able to join us for this fantastic family day of fun.” Further details available at www. bradfordmuseums.org/venues/ cartwright-hall-art-gallery
