Editors Note
Editor’s Note Hello and welcome to issue 33 of the Bradford Review. It’s only the second edition in the new bimonthly format so we are still getting used to it. But one of the things we have noticed is that it’s harder than ever to cram everything in! We have managed to reflect on two superb events in Illuminate Bradford and WOW Bradford, both of which celebrated Bradford’s unique character, albeit in different ways.
The Bradford Bid team revealed the results of their feasibility report which were overwhelmingly positive. Image credit: @Bradford_TandA
In this issue we climb aboard with Bradford Sea Cadets, a Bradford institution approoaching their 80th anniversary. We also visit a slightly younger member of the Bradford scene, The Underground, to reflect on their first 18 months in business. Elsewhere we have plenty of events for you to put in the diary over this festive period, whether you are a film buff or a music aficionado. Enjoy the read. Haigh Simpson
@BBCLookNorth shared the news that Bradford’s St Blaise Square won Outdoor Lighting Project of the year last month.

News and Updates New markets shuttle bus launched in Bradford A new shuttle bus service is being launched that will run between the Interchange and the Oastler Market at the top of town.
Civic Society to champion heritage plaque scheme Bradford Civic Society is spearheading a campaign to introduce a series of blue heritage plaques to the city and district in 2018. The move comes amid an increase in membership at the Civic Society and a resurgence in civic pride in Bradford in general. Most large cities in the UK have a dedicated blue plaque scheme, with notable buildings or places where people have made significant contributions highlighted. In Bradford there are already a small number of City Heritage plaques but most have seen better days, and some - such as one on the former Odeon building - have been removed or gone walkabout. After an overwhelmingly positive response to the plaques idea on Twitter, Bradford Civic Society now plans to formally launch the project in January with a public meeting in the city centre. At the meeting, Bradfordians will be invited to come and nominate people or sites to be considered for a plaque, and will be able to get involved in the planning, funding, and placement process too. bradfordcivicsociety.co.uk

Bradford BID reveals results of feasibility study Plans to launch a Business Improvement District (BID) in Bradford City centre took a significant step forward as the results of a feasibility study were revealed to a packed audience of business leaders at the Alhambra on 21 November. Chairman of the Bradford BID Development Group, Ian Ward, revealed 70% of respondents were in favour of the BID concept being tested by ballot, with 22% undecided and 8% against. The group have recommended that Bradford now moves towards detailed consultation and the production of a draft BID business plan. If the campaign is successful, Bradford BID could raise around ÂŁ500,000 a year to be spent on improving business performance in the city centre. Some of the projects being proposed at this stage include city centre ambassadors, street cleansing, street entertainment, marketing campaigns and improving the appearance of empty shops. An initial BID boundary, covering most of the city centre including the Kirkgate and Broadway shopping centres, has been proposed, which would include 585 eligible business premises. Each of these would be liable to a levy charge of 1.25% on their business rates which would fund BID activities in the event of a ‘yes’ vote. The study was based on feedback generated over the past six months with around a third of all eligible businesses contributing. Among other things it highlighted a general dissatisfaction with how Bradford was performing as a retail and professional services centre and the need for improvements in areas such as image and appearance. The BID Development group will now use the findings of the study to formulate a fiveyear business plan, with a ballot expected to take place in autumn 2018.

Next Stop Bradford call on businesses to support Rail Campaign Business Events
Next Stop Bradford has launched a new website which aims to increase support from businesses and residents to help secure a Northern Powerhouse Rail (NPR) station in Bradford city centre. Next Stop Bradford’s aim is to ensure that Bradford, the fifth largest city in the UK with one of the fastest growing economies, secures a new high-speed railway station in the city centre as part of the proposed investment in better transport connectivity across the north. Launched in early 2017, Next Stop Bradford continues to demonstrate the economic and social benefits an NPR station would bring to the city and the north. An NPR station in Bradford city centre is predicted to bring an annual economic boost of £1.3bn to the local economy, improve journey times and increase capacity on the railway network. The campaign has already gained support from leading voices across the region including Leeds City Council, West Yorkshire Combined Authority, Leeds City Region LEP, Bradford and Leeds Chambers of Commerce and key businesses such as Yorkshire Building Society and The Broadway Bradford. Through the Pledge my support web page residents, businesses and community leaders are encouraged to show their support for this transport investment by sharing why they believe Bradford should be included on the NPR network. This information will help demonstrate to decision makers at Transport for the North and in the Government why Bradford must be included in this major infrastructure investment.
Networking Tips #2 By Phil Cockayne (President at JCI Bradford)
Variety is the spice of life Our adaptive nature is wired into our evolutionary psyche. We adapt to survive, and we’re one of the most adaptive species on the planet. Yet when it comes to networking, we tend to adopt the more comforting go-with-what-you know technique. This means going to the same networking events over and over again. Variety is the spice of life so go to as many different ones as you can. If you’re always meeting the same people, your opportunities to extend your circle of influence are significantly limited. Networking is a skill which needs constantly refining so speaking with the same people all the time doesn’t improve those. So whether it’s JCI Bradford, the Yorkshire Enterprise Network (YEN), the Chamber of Commerce, or any others. Have a select group of ones you attend frequently but always be looking further afield.

Fake News - The Lies Behind the Truth Until 28 January, National Science and Media Museum, free entry It’s a term that has just been added to the Collins Dictionary, is frequently entered into search engines, and now Fake News is an exhibition at the National Science and Media Museum. Propaganda, alternative facts, doctored images, and unverified statistics can be found throughout the history of human communications, but do contemporary motivations and modes of dissemination make this apparent spike in reported misinformation a unique phenomenon? The Fake News exhibition examines historic examples from the National Science and Media Museum’s own collection and archives, alongside contemporary news and social media outlets, and reflects on the impact they have had. It examines recent media controversies such as the disputed crowd attendance at Donald Trump’s presidential inauguration and Jeremy Corbyn’s appearance at the 2017 state opening of parliament. And historic material including one of the world’s most famous photographic hoaxes, manipulated images from the picture library of the Daily Herald national newspaper, and inaccurate news reports from the Titanic disaster. In addition it looks at examples of viral stories from the web which demonstrate how far and fast information, claims and counterclaims now travel before the truth catches up. The exhibition identifies five factors which can contribute to fake news: political gain; misreporting; going viral; financial gain; and ‘not letting the truth get in the way of a good story’. scienceandmediamuseum.org.uk

Local Tips with Russell Bisset Papadoms set to open soon Papadoms, a new Indian restaurant specialising in strong Punjabi flavours and brewing its own line of craft beer, is set to open soon in The Broadway Bradford, on Charles Street. Sanjeev Sanghera, the firm’s founder and chief executive, says, “We think Papadoms is going to be one of the most iconic Indian restaurants in the country. We looked at Leeds, but were blown away with Bradford and the regeneration of the city centre. There’ll be a bar and cocktail lounge on the ground floor and we’ll create an Indian streetscape in the first floor restaurant.” Sanjeev has been in the restaurant business for many years in Glasgow and was part of the city’s successful team to win the Curry Capital title before Bradford took over the mantle, winning the title for a sixth year in a row last year.

What’s your name and what do you do? I’m Russell and I’m the Founder/Director here at Northern Monk. We’re a craft brewery born in Bradford, now based in a Grade II listed mill building hosting our brewery, events space and on-site tap room just outside the centre of Leeds. Favourite place to eat in Bradford? Bradford centre has some awesome Italian restaurants. Pairing a pizza from Mamma Mia’s with a few beers at The Sparrow is a winning combo. If you really want something special though, no one cooks meat like the guys at Classic Persian. You can take your own beer too, which means it can all be washed down with some cold Monk brews, if that’s your tipple. Favourite place to Drink in Bradford? In Bradford Keith at the Record Cafe and Les at The Sparrow fly the flag for the city centre. It’s their vision for North Parade combined with their passion for what they do as well as the city as a whole that has allowed the street to prosper and give opportunities to so many new independent businesses. I think you could put either establishment anywhere in the world and they would would thrive. They are first class offerings in our city. Local business you admire? Edward Street bakery. Living so close to Edward street bakery has been awesome. Watching them grow seemingly by the week. There are few better food experiences than a freshly baked loaf from Edward St with some butter. It’s all you need. Trading beer for bread certainly sweetens the deal too.

Happy End
14 November, Picturehouse at National Science and Media Museum, Bradford
Director: Michael Haenke. Starring: Isabelle Huppert, Jean-Louis Trintignant, Mathieu Kassovitz and Toby Jones
A new film documenting the eventful first year in charge for Bradford City owners Edin Rahic and Stefan Rupp was premiered to a packed Picturehouse on 14 November. A German film crew had spent the 2016/17 season shadowing the pair as they got to grips with the English game, the city of Bradford and the ups and downs of running a football club. The warts and all documentary went behind the scenes for some of the most dramatic moments of the season, including deadline day transfer drama and Wembley heartache. It offered a fascinating insight into the new owners philosophy and the impact this has had on the club, the staff and the supporters. Beautifully shot, surprisingly revealing and cleverly edited, it is a film that will interest fans from any club. It was certainly well received by a packed out Picturehouse audience that included the entire Bradford City squad, the two chairmen, manager Stuart McCall and star of the film Gregg Abbott (Chief Scout). The film is due to be shown on Eurosport early next year and is available for free through the club’s website. bradfordcityfc.co.uk

Michael Haneke returns with a biting satire on bourgeois family values set in the shadow of the European refugee crisis. Featuring a cast of top acting talent, including Isabelle Huppert, Jean-Louis Trintignant, Mathieu Kassovitz and Toby Jones, it’s a piercing dark comedy on the blind preoccupations of middleclass angst. Nominated for the Palme d’Or at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival, Happy End bears all the hallmarks of Haneke’s uniquely stark and unsympathetic style. Pairing pitch-black humour with chillingly precise direction.

All aboard the T S Aurora - Bradford Sea Cadets By Claire Gibbons
Bradford may be 50 miles from the sea, but seafaring folk are getting up to all sorts of exciting shenanigans in the heart of the city centre, and they’re looking for more people to get involved. Bradford Sea Cadets was formed back in 1938 and now resides in a former nursery school on Feversham Street, right in the middle of Bradford. The Unit is one of eight in the West Yorkshire District and currently has around 40 cadets and 14 staff who parade every Wednesday and Friday aboard T S Aurora, the nautical name assigned to the premises on Feversham Street. And the nautical names don’t stop there! Food is cooked and served in the galley and rooms are joined together by passage ways – you can almost feel yourself listing slightly as you walk through from room to room. T S Aurora is a lively and energetic place to be on parade nights as the three sections meet together to learn the traditions of the Royal Navy and Royal Marines. There are three sections parading – the Juniors, who are 10 to 12 years old (and look completely adorable in their mini uniforms!), Blue Side, who are Sea Cadets aged between 12 and 18 years old, and the camouflaged Greens – the Royal Marines Cadets who are completely at home in a field or on a boat. Everyone, Cadets, and volunteer staff members alike, belong to the Marine Society and Sea Cadets, both charities, and the Unit itself is a charity in its own right. So, what makes Sea Cadets, and T S Aurora so special? Lynn Bullock is the Commanding Officer of
26
the Unit and has been involved in Bradford Sea Cadets for 40 years. A former nurse, now semi-retired working in pre-assessment, Lyn strikes an appropriately commanding presence as we roam the passage ways to meet the Cadets, who fall silent as she enters their teaching rooms. “I originally got involved as my older brother was a member of staff here at the Unit, and I started out as Assistant Admin Officer back in 1976. “Almost 30 years later, back in 2005, I was still here, had worked my way up as a volunteer staff member, and here I am as Commanding Officer! Definitely one of my Sea Cadet career highlights. “We’ve now got Cadets from all over Shipley, Bingley, Leeds, and Halifax as well as Bradford and it makes me so proud to see youngsters enter the Unit as small Juniors and work their way through to being bold, confident, rounded young people, with new skills and qualifications under their uniformed belts!” Lyn kindly took me on a tour of T S Aurora and it was a pleasure to meet all the sections who were busily learning new skills in their classrooms. The Juniors were noisily but enthusiastically learning how to decode (and also drawing pictures of Father Christmas), The Marines were planning next year’s activities (“Bungee Jumping!”) whilst the Blues were deftly tying and untying lengths of

rope into all manner of amazing knots. “This one’s a Clove Hitch, a Reef Knot, a Figure of Eight,” they cry out. “But the hardest one to do is a Monkey’s Fist!” And I don’t doubt them for a minute! They proudly showed off their knots and told me about some of the activities they get up to and badges they have earned. As you would expect the Cadets spend time on the water, and Bradford Cadets spend more time than some water-based units! Kayaking, rowing, power boating, sailing and wind surfing are all regular activities, usually over at Wakefield Unit, or further afield during one of the national Summer Camps down at Sea Cadet training centre in Thrapston, Northamptonshire. Summer Camp definitely seems to be one of the highlights of being a Cadet as Leading Cadet Taylor, who holds the highest rank in the Sea Cadets Unit, told me: “When you go away to Summer Camp you get to meet everyone from the area, around 300 Cadets, and you meet loads of people and make loads of friends.”
But it’s not just messing about on the water. There are some impressive qualifications to be gained amidst all this fun and friendship. Power boating, windsurfing and sailing are all Royal Yachting Association approved, whilst British Canoeing endorses the canoeing activities and the rowing is affiliated to British Rowing. Each year, the Royal Navy remembers and celebrates their defeat over the Spanish at the legendary Battle of Trafalgar on Trafalgar Day, holding a ceremony on HMS Victory, docked in Portsmouth, and a parade in London. This year, Jordan Randall, one of Bradford’s Senior Cadets was chosen to be part of the parade. “I’ve been here for around six years now, starting as a Junior and working my way up to Senior Cadet where I now help the other Cadets and the staff. My Auntie was a Cadet before me. I came along and really enjoyed it. Being chosen to be part of Trafalgar Day this year is definitely one of my highlights, and I’m really looking forward to going offshore on one of the training boats in a few weeks.”

There was no doubting the buzz about the place and the enthusiasm and care being shown by the volunteer staff members there. They all have day jobs, but give up their time and skills to train and educate the Cadets both on Parade nights and at weekends. And they are on the lookout for some new volunteer staff. “Anyone can get involved, we provide all the training for free”. First Lieutenant Jayne Rolls is second in Command at the Unit and is an Anchor Housing Scheme Manager by day. “It’s a great place to come and learn new skills and meet new friends, and pass those skills onto the next generation. Cadets is now a big part of my life. All are welcome to pop down and visit us any time they like and visit T S Aurora! We make a great cup of tea!”
Jordan Randall, one of Bradford’s Senior Sea Cadets
After a visit to the Nutty Bar (the naval name for tuck shop!) the Cadets ‘stand easy’ and enthusiastically chat away about what they were looking forward to and what they wanted to be when they left Cadets. “Kayaking.” “Summer Camp.” “Fundraising.” “Power Boating.” “Camping in a field!” “Captain of my own ship.” “Weapons Engineer.” “Be in the Royal Navy.” And I don’t doubt for one minute that with the Bradford Sea Cadet team behind them they will do exactly that!
First Lieutenant, Jayne Rolls and Commanding Officer, Lynn Bullocks

Women of the World Unite! Words By Jack Lynch Photos by Karol Wyszynski
Southbank Centre’s Women of the World Festival (WOW) returned to Bradford on 18 - 19 November, following a hugely successful inaugural festival last year. Events took place at Kala Sangam Arts Centre and Bradford Cathedral and were attended by over 1,200 people during the weekend. WOW Bradford was a unique opportunity for Bradfordians to come together to share experiences and celebrate the achievements of women and girls with a line-up of over 45 different talks, discussions, performances and workshops. The festival was praised for its honesty and created dialogues about important issues that affect women and girls both nationally and internationally. WOW offered a chance to share stories of real experience on topics including the housing crisis, domestic abuse and ‘honour’ from a distinctly female perspective. With every event at the festival featuring a woman from Bradford doing something in her community, the festival shone a spotlight on the inspirational women that make Bradford so unique.
30
As well as tackling hard-hitting subjects, the festival was also a place for celebration encouraging people to dance, laugh and let go - through a Beyonce Dance Class, a flashmob and live music by The Peace Artistes. One highlight was the #IamPerfectAsMe workshop organised and run by the festival’s youth group the WOWsers around themes of mental health and self identity, which was one of the day’s busiest events. Halimo - A Bradford Story
Megan Murray Q&A
8 December, Theatre in the Mill
(Bradford Playhouse co-director)
Halimo is the story of Halimo Batel, who came to Bradford as part of the Bradford Exhibition of 1904. In this story of migration, arrival, birth and death we will explore questions of identity and values which are still pertinent to communities in Bradford today.
Favourite play? Rita, Sue and Bob Too. Very funny but also crushingly sad.
The Bradford Exhibition was held in Lister Park from May to October in the year that Cartwright Hall opened. For most of the 2.5m visitors to the exhibition, this would have been their first encounter with people of colour and intense public and media interest was heightened by a birth, a fire and a dispute over payments. Tragically during this time Halimo contracted TB and died. She became the first Muslim to be buried in Bradford. For this piece of visual theatre Cecil Green Arts (CGA) will be directed by master puppeteer Alison Duddle, (formerly joint Artistic Director of Horse + Bamboo Theatre). Joining our artist team will be two Bradford based artists Uzma Kazi and Somali born Shamsa Bakari. CGA creates visual street theatre in community settings, festivals and in the public realm. The company’s larger than life creations have been a staple of many participatory events, including lantern parades and street performance, in Bradford since 2011.

Favourite musical? Rent – we just finished a Playhouse production. I’m very much a live-fortoday type of person. Favourite actor? Maxine Peake - had the pleasure of working with her when Funny Cow was filmed at the Playhouse. Favourite place to visit in Bradford? Haworth, I love the views over Bradford from the moors. Local person you admire? Councillor Sinead Engel and her colleagues who work tirelessly for the people of Bradford. Where do you go for a night out? Don’t get many nights off - a relaxed evening at the New Inn Thornton, or strawberry gin in the Record Cafe.

Astraluna 21 December, Al’s Dime Bar
Astraluna is the stage name of Jennifer Birch. Prior to undertaking solo work as Astraluna, Jennifer had extensive experience of performance, recording and touring as part of Corinne Bailey Rae’s tour band. Having been close friends with Corinne since age 10, the two of them founded indie band Helen in the 1990s, which became well known on the Leeds circuit. Subsequently Jennifer toured with Corinne worldwide from 2009-2011 for the album The Sea (on rhythm guitar, keyboard and backing vocals) and has - in that context - performed on Glastonbury main stage and at various stadia in Europe, the Far East, and America. She also has a writing credit on the album for Diving for Hearts. She always harboured a desire to create her own music, and this has led to Astraluna and The Pass of Storms. To say that Astraluna’s music is ukulele-based is to give the wrong immediate impression. Her songs range from epic, ethereal soundscapes to stripped down emotions. Haunting and pure vocals compliment her warm ukulele sound, which is at times delicately harp-like and, at others, a heavy backing for multi-layered vocals, bass and percussion.

Going Underground by Haigh Simpson
It’s 18 months since the Underground opened its doors, injecting new life into the live music scene in Bradford. It was a bold move given the recent trend of music venue closures, but owner Nigel had seen a gap in the market and the perfect place to exploit it. Since then, the fully refurbished venue has hosted the likes of Maverick Sabre, Chris Helme and dozens of local bands and performers. We caught up with the Underground team to discuss the journey so far. How would you sum up your first 18 months at the Underground?
Do you have a particular gig or event that stands out in that time?
They have been both extremely exciting and challenging at the same time, but from day one the venue has had the help and advice from staff (past and present), family and also friends within the music scene who helped to guide us in the right direction.
For Nigel the Maverick Sabre gig is his highlight so far, it was the first big name gig that the venue hosted and it filled Nigel with a huge sense of pride to see his venue full to capacity with fans singing along with Maverick Sabre.
Where did the initial idea to open the Underground come from?
What have been the biggest challenges facing you as a new music venue in Bradford?
As a building contractor Nigel was asked to become a key holder for the then derelict building and he fell in love with the place as soon as he climbed down the ladders to carry out his initial inspection. He knew instantly that he had to do something to bring the building back to life and give it some purpose. He then got thinking about the music scene and that there wasn’t any large venues within the city to hold bigger gigs. Nigel spoke with his son Matthew and they decided to put Nigel’s money where his mouth was and embark on the adventure of renovating the building and launching The Underground.
38
The biggest challenge is attracting people back into Bradford city centre to see live music and also enjoy the excellent selection of nightlife that our city has to offer. This is mainly because as an entertainment provider we have a duty along with other venue owners and the council to make people feel safe in our city for nights out, the message is finally getting out there that Bradford is on the up and that we have some pretty amazing venues who want Bradford to be buzzing again and also take safety seriously.
What do you make of the live music scene in Bradford at the moment?
Music
Bradford Music scene is a vibrant sea of diversity at the moment with fresh new artists coming through our Open Mic night which is run by Daisy every Thursday. There are so many great bands out there right now that we are really spoilt for choice when it comes to booking gigs, touring bands are also starting to request to play in Bradford which is absolutely amazing for the venue and Bradford. It is an exciting time for Bradford music with bands such as Fling playing UK festivals and getting airplay on Radio 1, as a venue it has been amazing to see them progress from a local band to a nationally known band! Who makes the decisions? How do you decide who to book and who not to book? We make decisions as a team and all have contacts within the scene but Lisa is the main event booker. As far as who to book etc we obviously book bands and artists who we like but we also talk to our customers to find out who they want to see after all. Without them we wouldn’t have a venue to run. If money was no object, who would your dream booking be? That’s a no brainer to anyone who knows Nigel, his all time favourite band is E.L.O What are your plans for the venue over the next few years? We are currently in negotiations with a handful of promoters to bring some pretty big events to The Underground in 2018 and 2019 we already have events such as Dragonfest 6 confirmed and are talking to some pretty big names. The main aim is to encourage people of all age groups to get out and enjoy live music whether its watching or playing it. To find out more or see who is playing next at the Underground visit theundergroundbradford.wordpress.com

The college is holding a Maker’s’ Fair where local artists and makers will be selling their unique work. The impressive Dye House Gallery, in the college’s Lister Building, will be brimming with stalls showcasing a variety of crafts and art such as ceramics, glassware, woodwork, textiles, jewellery, leathercraft, paintings and homewares. New Sculpture to Showcase Technological Heritage
Cupola: A Circus Installation
Until February 2018, Kala Sangam
Cartwright Hall Art Gallery, Until 8 April
An innovative art piece is set to go on display in Bradford built using the latest in modern technology. Moving Memories forms part of a collaborative performance by artiste Lucie Lee, a West Yorkshire based dancer and digital specialist who has performed across Europe and in the West End, and renowned local sculptor Ian Randall. The Sculpture, which stands at approximately one metre tall, is currently on display in Kala Sangam Arts Centre. The piece was built using the latest large-scale 3D printing techniques, and was designed by tracking the motion of dancers performing a routine at Kala Sangam. The design and build process is being overseen by sculptor Ian Randall. Bradford residents will be familiar with the work of Selby based Mr Randall, with his sculptures featuring prominently outside Forster Square Railway Station, and his construction of the largest sculpture in Leeds, situated at Brewery Wharf. Moving Memories forms part of a planned larger series of sculptures, set to grow and tour the UK over the next two years. It is on display at Kala Sangam until February 2018. kalasangam.co.uk

Cupola showcases the work of local aerial circus company Skinning the Cat, who toured internationally from 1988 to 2002. The Bradford-based group created many sets, props and costumes for their performances in that time and their spectacular creations and designs celebrate the company’s contribution to contemporary circus. Becky Truman, Artistic Director and aerialist with Skinning the Cat has explored Yorkshire audience and artist engagement with the circus experience past and present to create an installation of sculpture and costume. The exhibition runs alongside a Skinning the Cat costume displayed at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, which marks the company’s role in the creation of contemporary circus. Cartwright Hall Art Gallery, Until 8 April
Illuminate Bradford Arts
Crowds packed into City Park over three nights in October to see City Hall transformed by an hourly projection mapping project, complemented by a series of street theatre performances, DJ sessions and dance productions all under the banner of Illuminate Bradford. Using massive projectors, huge visuals were projected onto the front of the City Hall celebrating the history of Bradford. The city’s film, textile and multicultural heritage were all represented through imaginative and colourful animations using the masonry of City Hall as a canvas. Elsewhere around City Park there were performers enticing the crowds, including a five-strong crew of drumming troll-boars, stiltwalkers and a robot on a scooter. Not forgetting an impressive dance performance from Nutkhut and The Dream Engine in the centre of the mirror pool. The Brick Box crew also got in on the party, celebrating the launch of the Brick Box Rooms on Ivegate with an evening of music, performance and art on the Friday evening.
