Bradford Refugee Week Refugee Week is the UK’s largest festival celebrating the contribution refugees make to our society and promoting understanding of why people seek sanctuary across the globe. This year’s programme here in Bradford is buzzing – it’s a jam packed week with something for everyone to enjoy and think about, reflecting the diversity of our city and the enthusiasm people have to get stuck in and help make things happen. And it’s happening all over the place; parks, Bradford Cathedral, schools, libraries, on the Big Screen, over the airwaves, behind the scenes at St Georges, Capital of Cycling, community centres, museums, mosques and churches. Bradford has been greatly enriched by migration over centuries, and in 2019 people have sought safety here from many different countries. Many of these experiences will form part of the Refugee Week programme this year, and there are plenty of opportunities to discover more about the conflicts and difficulties that

14

have given rise to leaving their home country. Highlights include Beats of the Antonov, hosted by the Sudanese Community in Bradford at Delius Arts and Cultural Centre. This powerful documentary explores how the Sudanese people are using traditional musical forms in response and resistance to the repeated bombing of Darfur. Films form a strong thread throughout the week with Gaza, The Dream of Shahrazad, Female Voice (made by Syrian women film makers) examining current and recent world political events, and The Visitor and Grow Your Own presenting stories closer to Bradford and a chance to discuss local issues. There are daily Big Screenings of locally made films about Bradford refugee projects – so get an ice cream and watch for half an hour starting at 11am from Tuesday to Saturday. Bradford Council have joined the party this year with story time and craft sessions in libraries across the district, an introductory training session for people working with migrants, and fabulous sneaky peek behind the scenes tours for refugees and friends, at St Georges. Both city centre museums are organising events – so do get along to the Science and Media Museum and the Peace Museum. And while you are in the city centre, do have a look at the three exhibitions of art work. Refugee Week has a significant celebratory dimension and Bradford is embracing it wholeheartedly. From the opening launch featuring the parade around the Mirror Pool led by the fabulously decorated 4 seater taxi bike, pedalled by the young unaccompanied asylum seekers who created it and escorting the Lord Mayor, to the Great Get Together in Peel Park - a fun packed community festival. From football to face painting, blinging your bike to cosy story time, it’s a chance to stretch your legs and your imagination, meet your neighbours and make new friends.

are activities that refugee groups have organised for themselves too. Although the printed programme is now fixed, there is still time to add your event to Bradford Refugee Week – use the Facebook page and of course our very own BCB106.6fm will be broadcasting throughout the week. So make sure they know about what you are up to. Thursday June 20th is World Refugee Day and BCB will be focussing on refugee experience, achievements and issues throughout, as well as highlighting the work of key supporting organisations . You can get hold of the programme on paper by emailing deborah@artworkscreative.org. uk or you can see it on the facebook page @ BradRefugeeWeek or on www.artworkscreative. org.uk, plus you can tweet about it on @ BradRefugeeWeek.

All of these events are open to everyone and are either free or pay as you feel. Alongside all of this

Sonia built a reputation in Bradford for her vegan street food and kitchen pop-ups. She is now is part of the kitchen team at Bread + Roses on North Parade.

Where did your interest in food come from and when did you decide to make a career out of it? I grew up around great Indian food made by my mum and nani ji, so always enjoyed cooking but when I switched to a vegan diet in 2015, food became even more exciting for me. Being creative with plant based ingredients, I’d love to share my food with friends and family, who really encouraged me. So I started with a few stalls at vegan festivals, and from there I’ve continued to work more and more with food whilst reducing my hours in various other day jobs. Since then I’ve had some amazing experiences: catering weddings, Supernormal Festival, themed supper clubs, some brilliantly memorable events with the Brick Box, and even incorporating my food into performance workshops when working on making a play with Common Wealth Theatre Co. All great fun! We got to know you through the Sonia Sandhu street food kitchen. How much fun was that to do and what did you take from it? Those were some of the first regular pop ups I did at Bradford Brewery, which I loved and learned loads from. I remember at the first one, I’d prepped loads but sold out of food within an hour and a half, and me and Dipak (who DJed at these events, got to fully bring the Desi vibes), were finished and sat having a beer by 8pm, wondering what and how that had just happened. These pop ups really helped my self belief - each time I would change up the menu, people seemed to love it and kept coming back. The more of these I did, I got better at all the behind the scenes stuff: organisation, menu planning, budgeting and prep, and I’m so glad for that experience. Oh yeah, and remembering to factor in time to feed myself too. That’s important. What’s the key to great street food? I’d say being inventive with vegan ingredients to achieve interesting flavours and textures. I really like to put my own spin on Indian snack recipes. Like recently, I added buckwheat and sunflower seeds into my aloo chaat, which really works with the traditional toppings and chutneys. For me, the key is delicious street food which is mindful of nutrition.

How different is it being involved day to day in a cafe setup? Did you enjoy being involved in the creation of Bread + Roses from the start? There’s so much more to manage in the day to day running of a cafe and I’ve learned a lot whilst on the job. It’s a pleasure to have played a part in the creation of Bread + Roses, which has been a massive team effort involving long hours and dedication. It has not been without its challenges, which at times has been difficult, but this makes seeing happy customers loving the space and what we have to offer even more rewarding. If you had to pick one, what’s your favourite ingredient? Aubergines! And a favourite dish? I was in Kerala earlier this year and learned to make appam with potato and pea coconut stew. They are these lovely and light little pancakes, spongy in the middle with lacy and crisp edges. You use them to mop up the creamy and delicately spiced stew. I am obsessed. Making and eating this brings back memories of the best holiday of my entire life, too, so it’s doubly delicious. There seems to be a growing appetite for good quality vegan and vegetarian food. Do you feel that the bar has been raised in terms of what people expect now? Totally. I think until not even that long ago, veggies and vegans would genuinely rejoice when finding at least one meal option on a menu. People are becoming much more switched on about the environmental and health damage, and ethical concerns linked with consuming meat and dairy. So of course as the demand for vegan food increases, I think that successful food businesses need to keep up, staying on the ball with new and enticing dishes and styles of dining. Bradford Science Festival This year’s Bradford Science Festival will be joined by new venues and partners for four days of out-of-this-world activities, with themes including space travel, chemistry and caring for the environment.

City Park is home to several science zones and STEM City, which brings in science-related organisations from around Bradford and beyond to showcase the opportunities they offer and the work they do.

The festival, produced by the National Science and Media Museum, is taking place once again at The Broadway shopping centre, City Park and the museum, from 18-21 July. And two new partners will be part of the event for 2019 - the University of Bradford and Impressions Gallery.

The University of Bradford is introducing Friday night activities to the festival with family slime-making and a chemistry mocktail bar in its STEM centre (free - check website for tickets), which will also feature in City Park on Saturday and Sunday. Impressions Gallery is set to host interactive artworks and displays which put a spotlight on the use and disposal of plastics, and Bradford Council is joining in with the recycling theme.

Throughout the festival space themed activities mark 50 years since Neil Armstrong first set foot on the moon, and there will be extraordinary experiments to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Periodic Table. Recycling and reducing use of plastic to improve the health of the world’s oceans will also be highlighted.

20

The National Science and Media Museum will be home to an array of activities throughout, including launching the festival with a special Lates evening event on Thursday 18 July.

Bradford Dragonboat Festival One of the most popular events on the summer calendar returns to Roberts Park, Saltaire this June. 2017 saw the Bradford Dragonboat Festival grow from a one-day event to a three day festival with the introduction of the UK’s first ever Youth Dragonboat Championship and the birth of a multi-charity day. The organisers were rewarded with record participation and crowds in both 2017 and 2018. 2019 is all set to be another exciting year for the Festival. It has experienced the fastest sell out for places across all the days in the competition. So much so that additional places had to be made available for the Youth Championship taking it to its maximum of 40 teams. In the spirit of inclusivity, the Youth Championship will have a day event for schools and an evening event for youth clubs and uniformed organisations. Team GB U18 came last year and will return this year, using the Festival as a training ground before they go to Thailand for the World Championships.

will proudly be wearing the GB uniform as they represent their Country. The Bradford Dragonboat team are developing a track record of producing high quality athletes for the sport and talent spotters from GB coaches will be there watching again this year. Saturday, which hosts the Lord Mayor’s Championship has also developed a life of its own with more media partners recognising the importance and value of the Festival and wanting to be part of the celebration. Participants this year include the T&A, Pulse , Pulse 2 and BBC Yorkshire (who have already confirmed Harry Gration and team will be in the boat!). Plus Rosie and Mylo from The Pulse will be hosting a variety of live music from the stage. The Bradford Dragonboat Festival will also have a range of food, stalls and lived music to keep you entertained between races. 21-23 June, Roberts Park, Saltaire

James Atkin James Atkin is the singer with the chart-topping band EMF whose hits in the 90’s included I Believe and Lies and a massive hit and a number one in America with Unbelievable. James’s great third solo album Popcorn Storm is out now, and he still performs with EMF and Bentley Rhythm Ace. James now lives in the Dales and teaches music in Keighley. James Collingwood spoke with James at his home. Hi James. You live in the Dales and teach in Keighley. What drew you to this area? You’re originally from the Forest of Dean I believe. I moved to London for quite a few years, but I felt my time was up in London. We did actually look at Cornwall and Devon and just by chance we came up the M6. Originally, we were looking at the Lake District. We went the other side of the M6 and looked at the Yorkshire Dales and fell in love with the place. “Well we can live anywhere let’s live here.” It was quite a wild move for us because we were right in the heart of Camden before. And that was the 90s.

28

Was the 90s a wild time? Yes, I certainly took advantage of the socialising. Being in a pop band that’s had big hits you can kind of swan around a bit. Living it up large not having to worry to much about having to go to work on a Monday morning. Lots of getting into clubs. Making the most of it. And EMF were just before Britpop? Yeah there’s this sort of weird thing when thinking about the 90s. People just think of Britpop. Before Blur and Oasis - well Blur were around certainlybut before Oasis and the Britpop scene (which was more mid 90s) in the early 90s there was a little scene that got forgotten a bit. Bands like ourselves Carter USM and Pop Will Eat itself.

Really successful bands with big hits but yeah it didn’t really get a label and to this day I don’t know how you would label that time. You were the only ones to do it in America. Well we were the ones that had the big hits which I’m thankful for. I’m still friends with a lot of people in those bands and it’s a strange one coz they can do gigs now and sell tickets. For example, Jim Bob sells out Shepherds Bush Empire. EMF even though they had the big hits and sold lots of records don’t seem to have that following. The base following didn’t seem to stay like with some of these bands I think your music sounds fresh now. I listened to Schubert Dip recently and it still sounds great. My favourite track on that album is Lies and there’s a clip from the Letterman show on You Tube that looks fantastic. You’re a great frontman. Thanks you. Yeah that was the second single in America and there’s a couple of different versions of it. The album version …I’m not quite sure what happened but originally, we had a sample of Mark Chapman. There was some controversy were Yoko Ono sued us for a lot of money and we had to remove the sample from a lot of the presses. The problem was not that we’d used

Mark Chapman which is pretty outrageous and in hindsight I know we shouldn’t have done that. It was because he was reciting some Lennon lyrics and there was a copywrite on it. In the last week we’ve been remastering the album for a 30th anniversary box set but we’ve had to decide whether to go with the Yoko Ono one or not. Chapman wanted some publicity. It was all about publicity About him. So out of respect … Unbelievable is obviously the one that everybody still knows. How do you feel about the song? Well to start with the song is bigger than the band really That’s the kind of way it’s become. If they say EMF they look a little bit blank at me. If I say Unbelievable bang, they’ve got it straight away. Going back to what you said about Schubert Dip, it did make a kind of connection with people. It was an unashamedly pop album. At the time we had all our peers doing really cool indie stuff and our album was very pop but not commercial manufactured pop like New Kids on the Block. So, we were kind of in the middle. Were we an indie band or were we a pop band? And it was really hard work. Being on the front covers of Smash Hits I hated it, but little did I know that people like Carter and Stereo Mcs would kill for that. But at the time I was like this is so embarrassing

29 29

I read you were an indie kid originally how did your band get into the music you were into? I always played in bands and was always trying to do something in bands. I was a complete indie kid into Echo and the Bunnymen, the Smiths the Cure and originally the Jam. All over that. The original bands we had that’s what we sounded like. We just did covers because that was all we wanted to be really. I think that was the learning process before we found our own thing. But then all of a sudden we got into Acid House and dance music in the 80’s. I must admit I didn’t really understand what it was back then but I thought this is fresh and new and exciting So we kind of looked in that direction and kind of looked at keeping some indie integrity and sound and kind of mixed it up with some synths and drum machines. There’s a lot of that in EMF. A lot of different things going into the music That’s the different personalities Lots of guitars etc. It’s funny really. We didn’t plan how it was going to sound. It was a bit of a mix. When I sat down with Ian (Dench) and we wrote the first few songs I think I was always pushing for it to be a bit more dance orientated. He wanted it to be a bit more guitary. Thankfully we got it just right, I think.

Popcorn Storm was recorded here at your home?

So obviously you’re now teaching at Holy Family in Keighley. How did you get into teaching?

Popcorn Storm is out now available through JamesAtkinMusic.

Well I moved to the North of England and originally envisaged retiring and having a nice 30

quiet chilled life and then I thought maybe I should do something. I had little structure or direction in my life which is not that healthy sometimes. So, I did some voluntary work at this place called the Waxworks in Bradford and that was helping people produce. Production techniques, DJing etc. All very urban based and I’m not very urban really. It was kind of an eye opener. It was all about engaging the kids. It took me a while to get my head around that. Then I thought well there’s some great stuff going on here, so it just developed from there. The school I’m in at the moment I kind of just fell into the job. I was helping out doing A Level coursework and I took on teaching A Level music technology and over the years I’ve become a fully-fledged secondary school teacher. I did go and do a degree and learn how to become a teacher properly. It’s crazy because I hated school. It’s a worthy job and it’s fun and you’re never clockwatching.

I’m very lucky. The thing nowadays is the technology makes it sound professional and great and it gives you a lot of freedom. And also, the studio becomes part of the writing process. What I normally do I’m normally mixing it and producing it as I’m writing it.

The Soapgirls

Armed with unforgettable melodies and catchy choruses, The SoapGirls energy, rawness and authenticity live, has earned a formidable reputation. Performing internationally and continuously since 2015, these fearless French born sisters Millie and Mie, have slayed critics and earned a global dedicated group of followers known as the ‘The SoapSuds’, some of who follow the band across the UK and Europe.

Following the band’s inception in London, UK in 1984 – originally as The Choirboys, then The Queerboys, before settling on the less controversial name of The Quireboys – there followed 6 years of hard graft and personnel changes before the inevitable happened – a UK number 2 album.

The Quireboys

14 June, The Underground, Bradford

Despite supporting a certain Guns N’ Roses at the legendary Hammersmith Odeon in London it was 1990’s A Bit of What You Fancy that brought the band to the attention of the public at large, and featured founder member Spike on vocals and new recruit Guy Griffin on guitar. The record showcased no fewer than 5 hit singles – including “Hey You” which peaked at number 5 in the US Billboard Rock Chart and number 14 in the UK Singles chart. Spike and Guy have been the backbone of the quintessential British rock’n’roll band ever since – a journey that has seen them play to 72,000 at 1990s Monsters of Rock at Donington with the likes of Whitesnake, Aerosmith and Poison – supporting The Rolling Stones that same year, and joining Guns N’ Roses again a couple of years later on their Use Your Illusion tour.

It was there that she was exposed to traditional Irish folk music, and with her Grandmother having been born in Tralee in Ireland, Kelly was heavily drawn to the culture and especially the traditional music, played live with intricacy and passion. After supporting various high-profile acts such as Phil Beer (Show of Hands), Cara Dillon and Barbara Dickson, Kelly began playing her own headline shows and slots at festivals around the country. Since then, she has released two albums of her own original songs and has enjoyed many accolades for her work.
