I hope you had a great summer? For many it’s kids back to school and routines back to normal now we are into September. I very much enjoyed being part of the Henshaws Urban Beach in August. On Sunday 6th, Culture HaK (my own hobby venture) proudly presented talented York singer-songwriter Rachel Croft with an acoustic set to open the beach. I headed to the Knaresborough Lions Beer Festival at Knaresborough House on Friday 11th August as part of feva. I have to say the beer selection was one of the best for many years. The Harrogate Brewing Co. Plum Porter in particular seemed to get the winning vote of many - including mine.

I don’t know about you, but I feel very lucky to be in Harrogate as the autumn leaves start to appear. It’s such a beautiful time of year. Until next time…

Arts Festival to celebrate creativity

Calling budding Gondoliers

True North presents music, art and dance from the likes of Paul Mirfin Band, saxophonist Christian Forshaw, Tewit Brass Band plus dance companies and visual artists from the region.

Harrogate Gilbert & Sullivan Society (HGSS) will be producing the comic opera from 16 to 19 May at Harrogate Theatre and they are inviting anyone interested to come and find out more about it at a no-obligation open evening at St Paul’s URC Hall, Belford Road, Harrogate HG1 1EL, 7.30pm on Monday 11 September. What’s more, a complimentary glass of sparkling wine will be on offer for all who attend.

A number of local creatives have come together to organise a new non-profit event for Harrogate. True North is a mini arts festival with the core aim being to celebrate creativity. As a free event to be held at the stunning Grade II listed Edwardian Royal Hall, it’s an evening of culture designed to be accessible to people who may otherwise find engaging with the arts difficult.

To highlight the importance of the arts in the community there will be a collection at the event for Orb Arts – a Knaresboroughbased charity with a focus on mental health and well-being through creative expression. Tickets available now at www. harrogatetheatre.co.uk/whats-on 10 In the News

If the International Gilbert & Sullivan Festival in Harrogate this August has whetted your appetite, then there’s now an opportunity to be part of a lavish production of one of the most loved G&S Operas, The Gondoliers, being staged in Harrogate next May.

If you’ve ever fancied taking to the stage, now is your chance. You don’t need to be an expert - just able to hold a tune, learn a basic score and follow directions! For more see www.hgss.info or just turn up

Celebrate independent Harrogate by sharing your indie experiences

There’s been much talk over recent years about our local independents and how important they are for the brand and culture of the town. The Harrogate Advertiser launched a #loveourindies campaign a few years ago and since then there’s been lots of talk around how we can do more to stop our cherished indies falling foul to the overpowering presence of more and more big chains. In that time more indies have sadly closed their doors. Local indie businessman Paul Rawlinson – owner of Baltzersens and Norse - has kicked off the latest debate with a lengthy blog on why he feels it’s happening and what we can all do about it as a business and consumer community. Another new initiative is Indie Biz Collective – currently a Facebook community with networking events already planned. It’s important for locals to support indies as much as possible, but it’s also important for us to not only communicate with but also educate tourists about the importance of the indies in the area to encourage them not to just flock to the known or celebrity-endorsed brands. At the end of the day indies done right are an unbeatable choice every time. How can you help? Well, whenever you enjoy a quality indie experience please celebrate it publicly as much as possible. Only if we loudly and passionately support the indies we love can we help secure their individual futures and safeguard the unique charm of this wonderful town. In the News 11

A conversation on women & beer by Culture HaK

The subject of women and beer is not a new one – the fact is, women brewed beer first. In ancient Egypt beer was traditionally brewed by women and wine was considered the man’s drink. Throughout medieval Britain, wives would produce what was pretty much home brew for the family to sup during the day. Brewing was at first a domestic chore, but quickly became a profitable game, providing an income and financial independence for many women. Whilst women weren’t permitted to have ‘real jobs’ like landowning, brewing was permitted as it didn’t require a woman to leave the home. However the Black Plague changed all this by killing many, causing labour shortages and in turn wages increased. Ale houses started to open, brewing moved from the home to the factory and as it became a more commercialised industry, men took charge. For many years beer has been considered a man thing - we’re all familiar with the traditional stereotype of the bloke in the pub on a Sunday while the wife cooks a roast dinner for his return. Men drink the pints and ladies drink the halves… or a

nice glass of wine… or in recent times, how about a prosecco for the lady? We all know how it goes. But (thankfully) times have changed. In recent years there’s been an upsurge in women brewing again (‘Brewsters’), and the craft movement has encouraged more and more women to drink beer. What’s more, there are prominent female leaders in the industry and there are a number of social groups and even festivals designed to embrace and celebrate women and beer. Melissa Cole is an award-winning beer writer and author who writes extensively about the world’s favourite drink. She is also a Certified Cicerone® and was identified as one of the Most Powerful Women in the Drinks Industry by Channel4 Food. Melissa has just written The Little Book Of Craft Beer: A Guide To

The Little Book Of Craft Beer: A Guide To Over 100 Of The World’s Finest Brews. Jane Peyton was Britain’s first Beer Sommelier of the Year in 2014. She is the instigator and driving force behind Britain’s national beer day celebrations – Beer Day Britain, held annually on 15 June. In the north Ladies That Beer – founded by beer drinker Julie O’Grady - is a hugely active open social group for ladies who enjoy drinking good beer. The group organises meetups and events in pubs and bars across Liverpool & beyond. As the leading membership organisation in the industry, CAMRA has seen an increase in female membership in recent years, although their membership balance is still 25% women and 75% men. Looking at the latest issue of the CAMRA membership magazine, BEER – which is heavily weighted in favour of white men from cover to cover – it could be argued that CAMRA need to be more proactive at addressing that balance. Unfortunately the issue of sexism in the beer industry is generally still a thing, with instances reported daily on social media. Examples include workplace discrimination, beer pump images, advertising visuals and messages, and even flippant comments in social spaces. The stance today in many industry circles is zero tolerance of sexism, and women are very much invited to speak up about anything that doesn’t feel right in order to keep on fighting the good fight. Beer

And Sexism is an initiative where women are encouraged to share their stories of mansplaining, misogyny and beer via a website or by email. In terms of beer festivals, Fem.Ale was the UK’s first Brewster beer festival. Launching in 2014 in Norwich, the festival has enjoyed four years of celebrating women in the brewing industry and now holds a festival in Brighton, too. Moving back north, the first ever Women On Tap Beer Festival took place at The Little Ale House in Harrogate in May 2017. Across three days the taps were taken over by either Brewsters or breweries with a strong female influence, including Atom, Baildon, Brewsters, Dancing Duck, Half Moon, Mallinsons, Nomadic, Prospect, Steam Machine, Wellbeck Abbey, and Woodforde’s. In addition to the tap takeover the venue hosted an exhibition of art by Harrogate artist Frances Payne, as well as live music from Cara Hammond and The Paper Waits. The special guest at

“What we want to do now is raise the profile of not only Women On Tap in the wider beer industry, but also to fly the flag for Harrogate as a serious player in terms of brewing, beer expertise and the town’s range of quality craft beer and real ale establishments.”

the festival was Melissa Cole, who hosted two sell-out beer tasting sessions. The initiative was so well received, there are now plans to develop Women On Tap in a number of ways. Harrogate Review Editor Rachel Auty cofounded the festival and adds, “I’m a keen beer drinker and I’ve always felt a little frustrated that women aren’t celebrated enough in the industry. I wanted to create something that would highlight the valuable contribution women are making to beer in a town I believe punches above its weight in term of great beer and bars. The reception of Harrogate’s first Women On Tap Beer Festival demonstrated how much local people are behind this initiative.

Representing Women On Tap, Rachel will be hosting A Conversation On Women & Beer, a panel discussion on Sunday 3 September at Northern Monk Refectory in Leeds as part of Leeds Beer Week, and is looking at making Women On Tap 2018 a five or six day festival in May. The main venue will still be The Little Ale House, but the wider festival will include a programme of events, art and music across some of the other excellent bars in the town centre. She is also in talks with Katie Marriott, Brewer at Nomadic Brewery, about collaborating on a special Women On Tap beer. Rachel says, “What’s really special is the support we have for what we are doing, from both men and women, local businesses, and local organisations such as Harrogate and Ripon CAMRA. Women On Tap is meant to be a celebration for absolutely anyone who loves beer, and with so much in the pipeline it certainly feels like exactly that.” For more see www.wotfest.com

The Game’s A Foot, Try the Fish (And The Man With The Twisted Hip) is a show packed with laughs and a revolving gallery of high society dames and eccentric waiters, presented by award-winning writer-performer Tom Tailor. This show was a smash hit at Edinburgh Festival, collecting a host of four and five star reviews. opportunity to kick back with the Sunday papers, a pint and a sandwich in one of Harrogate’s oldest and most beautiful spaces. Also on The Big Weekend don’t miss your chance to meet the Trolley Girls as they use comedy, music, and character work to give their take on failed relationships, finding our own path, and how best friends stick together. The sixth Comedian Of The Year competition will also take place this year. During two heats a host of tip top comics battle to impress the audience and judges to secure a place in the final on Wednesday 11 October, as well as a spot at the much coveted Hyena Lounge Comedy Club Closing Gala on Saturday 14 October. The Harrogate Comedy Festival is undisputedly a real gem for the town and has a fantastic reputation for quality - even earning Harrogate the title Comedy Capital Of The North along the way. This year Harrogate Theatre hopes to build on that and the festival programmers are proud of not only the big names but also another diverse comedy offer of ‘not just stand-up’. Over 7,000 people attended last year’s festival and the hope is for even more in 2017. Harrogate Comedy Festival is a significant investment for Harrogate Theatre and as a charity they simply couldn’t continue to do it every year without the supporters and ticket buyers. Harrogate Comedy Festival will run across Harrogate Theatre, the Royal Hall and Harrogate Convention Centre from Monday 2 to Saturday 14 October 2017. For more information and to book tickets visit www.harrogatetheatre. co.uk or call the Harrogate Theatre Box Office on 01423 502 116.

How did you get into illustration?

I have been doodling and drawing since I remember and I have always loved it. When I was a student, quite often, instead of making notes and paying attention to what my teachers were saying, I was drawing new ilustrations on my notebooks (especially those for biology!). My first inspiration was a street art, especially French graffit artist – Fafi. Then I was inspired by Frida Kahlo and Polish School of Poster Art. Although art has always played a very important part in my life, a breakthrough moment for me was time I spent in Lublin School of Art and Design. I fell in love with graphic design and thanks to great tutors, I have learned a lot. Nowadays I tend to follow my own path, constantly developing my skills to become as good as I can be.

What’s your relationship with Harrogate? Harrogate is my new home. I have been living here for almost three years and it is all down to my husband ;) He tricked me into coming over by sending me the article about Harrogate being the best place to live in UK. I came in, fell in love and.. I am still here. I love Harrogate for being very friendly and inspirational.

Describe your perfect creative environment. Without a doubt it would be a meadow on a sunny morning, my favourite music on (one of my biggest inspirations) and obviously a good cup of tea. Sometimes, however it could be completely unexpected and random moment, which gives me suprisingly a great idea about next project – i.e while hoovering!

What do you like to do when you’re not illustrating? I don’t like staying in the same place and being bored. I love travelling, getting to know new people and cultures. Whenever I can, I love going for a walk in countryside or hopping on a plane to explore one of the busy European cities. As well as illustration, I am also very keen on graphic design, particularly on creating logos and visual identifiction for companies as well as personalised projects such as wedding invitations or greeting cards. In my spare time I also love teaching and I am a teacher at a Polish Saturday School.

The serious business of food by Vicky Carr

After arriving in Harrogate four years ago South African-born chef Whaheed Rojan is making waves through his independent private dining business, The Round Table Dining. He has twice been nominated and shortlisted as Chef Of The Year in the Harrogate Hospitality And Tourism Awards.

We caught up with him to find out what brought him here – and what he thinks of the local food scene.

What’s your professional background? I worked for a long time in Cape Town without having any formal qualification, and one day my boss asked what I wanted to do with my life. I told him I wanted to be a chef. He then paid for my training and had the tutor come into work for a whole year to train me. Not every chef can say they’ve had private training – I’m very fortunate. I worked my way up in some of Cape Town’s finest restaurants and hotels, then I worked on the Queen Mary 2 for many years. This was the hardest job of all, feeding thousands of passengers in the high-pressure kitchens. The standards

28 Preview Feature

were extremely high, but it was a great experience. Any unusual stories or celebrity encounters?

I was once booked for a private function by an agent who told us the client was a real VIP in Cape Town. My team and myself had to go through security checks before we could do the job. Everything was really hush-hush as nobody was supposed to know who the client was. We had security in our kitchen while we worked, which was added pressure. After the last course was served, the client asked to see me. I took off my apron and walked into the dining room. As I approached the table my legs started shaking. They felt like panna cotta on a plate. I made it to the table without falling over my own feet, where I was greeted by the client. His exact words were, “I don’t need to introduce myself because you probably know me,” and he then chuckled, “I just want to thank you for this extraordinary meal.” I was completely starstruck. Once I caught my breath I replied, “Thank you, Tata.” Tata means Grandfather in Xhosa.

It was Nelson Mandela. I’ve cooked for other celebrities over the years, but that was particularly special. I’ll never forget it. What brought you to Harrogate?

Whilst working on the Queen Mary 2, I met my wife, Rebecca. We had a fantastic few years working on the ocean liner together. In between our contracts we backpacked around different countries, experiencing different cultures and ways of life, and of course different cuisines. It was halfway through a six-month trip to India we found out she was pregnant with our daughter, Jasmine. After the trip, we decided to settle down in Harrogate, Rebecca’s home town. We now have two children and I’m really enjoying building my life and business in this beautiful town.

30 Preview Feature

How does Harrogate compare with Cape Town?

They’re both beautiful places. The main difference is the weather. I feel cold here even in the summer. I love the flowers and the Stray in Harrogate and the sunshine and the beach in Cape Town. Both are cosmopolitan with lovely shops, cafés, restaurants and bars. Did you know much about British food before you moved here?

I had some knowledge of British food before I came to England – we had to learn certain dishes for the ship as there were a lot of British passengers. The head chef on the Queen Mary 2, who is from Malton, taught me how to make Yorkshire puddings. I adapted his recipe slightly, adding different herbs for more flavour. The great thing about my job is you’re always learning, and I’m really

enjoying trying all the popular British dishes, but putting my own twist on them.

What’s your favourite international cuisine?

I do miss my mum’s Cape Malay curry, but I would say probably Asian cuisine. I just find the flavours so fragrant, light and healthy. Although I do like a good Sunday roast with all the trimmings. Do you have a signature dish?

My signature dish changes constantly, as I’m always experimenting with new ideas, flavours, techniques and plating ideas.

You run a lunchtime sandwich delivery service and catering for businesses, as well as private dining. How do the two sides of the business work together? They combine really well. For private dining, it’s all about creating bespoke menus to suit the occasion and working with our clients to get it just right. At lunchtime, the menu is different every week and it’s more adventurous than your average bacon butty – but still really affordable. People get the same quality food as our private dining customers, brought right to them. What motivates you?

Seeing people enjoying my food and appreciating the hard work and love that has gone into the dish. That passion makes all the hard work worthwhile. Has anything surprised you about working in Harrogate? Indeed. As a chef you expect other chefs to take food really seriously.

However, in Harrogate the people take food seriously too. That’s good for me as a chef and a businessman, as it keeps me on my toes all the time. How have you found the welcome here?

I’ve been made really welcome in Harrogate. Local businesses and suppliers have been brilliant, and I’m amazed at the fantastic local produce we have on our doorstep. It really makes a difference to the dish. I think people have been very open to my style of cooking and use of different flavours and have welcomed it in a very positive way. What would you like to achieve that you haven’t yet done?

Personally, I’ve had the opportunity to travel a lot, but I want to travel more. I guess once a traveller, always a traveller! There’s just so much to see, and I love finding proper, authentic recipes. Professionally, I would like to open a training academy for chefs. I believe my wealth of knowledge and experience could help to kick start the young blood coming into the industry and shape them for their culinary careers ahead. It’s senseless for me to take all my experiences and knowledge to my grave.

Where do you want to be in five years’ time? I would like The Round Table Dining to become a household name. Where people see our logo and instantly recognise us a local Harrogate independent business that’s here to stay.

The Quiz @ 10 Devonshire Place

Rita, Sue And Bob Too @ Harrogate Theatre

The real appeal is the music round with a difference, which welcomes a local musician to play 10 songs that you simply have to name the original artist for. Not for the faint hearted, the 10 Devonshire Sunday Pub Quiz is a little bit different to the average pub quiz, you’ll either love it or hate it... or quite possibly both!

Best friends Rita and Sue get a lift home from married Bob after babysitting his kids. When he takes the scenic route and offers them a bit of fun, the three start a fling they each think they control.

10 Devonshire Place has a pub quiz every Sunday night and it’s known locally as ‘almost certainly the best thing since gravity’. Entry is always free, and host DJ Trev asks such challenging questions as “What are your favourite biscuits?” and “Is this in Branston Pickle?”

It’s a cracking night out at one of Harrogate’s favourite craft ale bars – round up your team mates and give it a go. For more see www.facebook. com/10DevonshirePl 34 Picks of the Month

Andrea Dunbar’s semi-autobiographical play comes to the stage at Harrogate Theatre this autumn, from 26 to 30 September. The play was written in 1982 when Dunbar was just 19. It’s a vivid portrait of girls caught between brutal childhood and an unpromising future, hungry for adult adventure.

Told with wicked humour, startling insight and a great ear for dialogue, Rita, Sue And Bob Too famously became a cult film. The classic play’s original director Max Stafford-Clark directs this major new production. For more see www.harrogatetheatre. co.uk/whats-on

Indie Biz Collective Workshop #1

There’s been a fair bit of talk in recent months about the presence of large chain businesses in the town, highlighting the issues and struggle for survival for smaller independents. A new initiative – Indie Biz Collective – has been set up, initially as a Facebook group, to bring small independents together. The primary aim of the group is to enable small indie businesses to collaborate, get business help and advice, and generally offer a safe and encouraging space where they can interact with like-minded people. A Quick Chat with...

Jacquie Cole

Jacquie Cole is an exceptionally well-travelled independent travel agent with over 35 years experience. She works by appointment as Bakewell Travel from an office in Southfield, Station Parade. Favourite place to hang out in and around Harrogate?

I really appreciate my walk to work, there can’t be many better routes to work than under the cherry blossoms on the Stray in spring. For entertainment Harrogate Theatre, not just the big productions, Harrogate Dramatic Society’s recent production of Othello in the Studio Theatre was excellent, it’s hard to believe they’re an amateur company. At the end of a busy day my friends and I enjoy the after work Aperitivo, wine and small plates of food at Veeno.

Local event you couldn’t live without?

Raworths Literary Festival. It’s enlightening listening to the authors unveil the background to a novel or their inspiration for a character. I’ve heard many fascinating talks.. and one rather odd one.

Local business you admire?

Quality Health Foods in the Westminster Arcade. Established 35 years ago they’re friendly, helpful and have always seem to have the expertise needed in reply to a range of health and wellbeing queries, plus a vast selection of products and remedies.

Local person you admire (past or present)?

The saxophonist Snake Davis - to have built a successful musical career without all the celebrity nonsense makes him a great role model for today’s young musicians.

Name a guilty pleasure...

Florentines from the wonderful Manna bakery on Cold Bath Road, so tempting when just popping in for a loaf of their delicious bread.
