Rebrand for iconic events venue

One of Harrogate’s most iconic and longest running businesses is heading into spring with a new look and new name. The International Centre has undergone a rebranding as it looks to capitalise on a growing national awareness of Harrogate. Brian Dobson, head of sales and events, said: “We have changed the name of the business to Harrogate Convention Centre because we felt that HIC Yorkshire didn’t get across exactly where we were or what we do.” “We’ve hosted events on the site of the convention centre for almost 200 years and we want to make the most of that heritage. “We also feel that Harrogate is renowned nationally, thanks to great brands like Taylors and Harrogate Spring, as well as hosting events like the BBC Good Food Show and Tour de Yorkshire.” 6 In the News

The Tour de Yorkshire: Stage Guide

Last year’s Tour de Yorkshire winner Thomas Voeckler, who will be competing again in 2017 in his final year on the tour.

Tadcaster: Race Start

The ceremonial start of the race is in Tadcaster, this is where you will get the chance to meet the riders, get a few signatures and souvenirs and see the team preparations. In addition to this there will be a large viewing screen and a host of activities for everyone throughout the day. Tadcaster will be offering a big Yorkshire welcome to the world of cycling, and the race will celebrate the reopening of the bridge that was damaged in the 2015 Boxing Day floods, with riders crossing the bridge as they set off on this 122km route.

Boston Spa

At Boston Spa the famous red flag will be lowered, and the competitive racing will begin, riders thinking about the sprint point in Knaresborough hoping to break away early.

Wetherby

This beautiful market town has an attractive and thriving High Street and will be a great spot to wave the cyclists on, and spectators can be sure of plenty to do to pass the time between the two races.

Lofthouse

Day two features just one King of the Mountains climb, but what a climb it is. The CĂ´te de Lofthouse, known locally as Trapping Hill, is a brutal ascent and guaranteed to offer a sensational spectator experience. While there will be some parking in the village this will be very limited and organisers as advising people to park in Pateley Bridge , and cycle up the Lofthouse. The road is very flat and the 6.5 miles can be ridden in under an hour at a leisurely pace.

Masham

At Masham the race will evoke memories of the Grand Depart in 2014, but this time the race will pass right through the picturesque market place where there a range of attractions and activities taking place all day.

West Tanfield

This little pretty village punched above its weight as a great location to see the Tour de France in 2014 and will do so again in 2017.

Knaresborough

Ripon

Burnt Yates

Harrogate : Race Finish

Knaresborough is the location for the first of the two sprints on the stage. The sprint competition sees riders compete for the points awarded for the first competitors over the line at various locations throughout the race; the rider with the most points will be awarded the Sprint Jersey at the end of each day. This pretty village that overlooks the valley of Nidderdale is the one place you can see each race twice without changing location. There is a significant hill just a short walk away at Bedlam, while not categorised for the King of the Mountains competition, this slope will slow the riders and give fans a chance to cheer their heroes on.

Pateley Bridge

This pretty market town with its award winning High Street provided one of the most iconic images of Stage 1 last year as the riders whizzed down past the crowds. Pateley Bridge will have events and entertainments taking place throughout the day to celebrate the tour.

The last market place on this stage belongs to Ripon, where a special market and a day of entertainment and events will take place to celebrate the return of the professions peloton. The race will leave Ripon via the World Heritage Site of Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal Water Gardens. The long straight run into Harrogate became the venue for a nail-biting finish in 2014 as Cavendish crashed and Marcel Kittel secured the Yellow Jersey.

The final mile into Harrogate will be the same, as the race dips down to pass the Royal Hall, and then up to the Stray for the sprint to the line. As well as the finish line, Harrogate will be hosting a fan Zone with a big screen, food and drink, and the whole town will be buzzing with the excitement of the race. A number of events will take place through the day and evening.

Knaresborough welcomes the Tour by Bill Rigby

On Saturday 29 April, Knaresborough High Street will be lined with crowds of eager spectators keen for a glimpse of world champion cyclists and their favourite team’s colours as the second stage of the Tour de Yorkshire rolls through town, not once but twice!

12 CommunityFeature

With racing in the morning and afternoon and with food, drink and entertainment in between, Knaresborough is an ideal family location for enjoying all the excitement of the TdY and, in the words of the Mayor, Councillor Bill Rigby, “This will demonstrate why Knaresborough is such a splendid place to live, work, and play.”

There’s extra reason for Knaresborough to celebrate this year, since it’s the first time the women have raced in a town linked with seven times world champion Beryl Burton, who lived and trained locally for many years. In fact the racers will pass directly below the town’s Beryl Burton window painting.

According to race officials the women’s race is due in Knaresborough at about 9.50am and the men’s at about 2.30pm, and both pelotons will arrive on the High Street at full tilt as racers complete the first sprint of the day.

But even that’s not the only reason for Knaresborough to cheer the racers. Arguably, without the roads that local hero John Metcalf - affectionately known locally as Blind Jack - built over 350 years ago, several of the routes the teams will be taking might not exist.

But there will be lots more to keep the crowds entertained right through the day and a full programme of events is planned to take place in the town centre. Organisers say there’ll be continuous entertainment throughout, from dancers, singers, instrumentalists and entertainers along with static and mobile displays of historic pedal-powered devices and chances for children to experience weird and wonderful forms of pedal power. And in case you don’t know, historic Knaresborough has plenty of scenic picnic opportunities in the parks and open spaces within easy reach of refreshment. Down by the river the waterside cafes offer unrivalled riverside views and of course that’s where the boats are available for hire.

Blind from the age of six, Blind Jack led an unremittingly active and productive life and the town plans big celebrations this year to mark his 300th anniversary. Seeing the race go by on the ‘road that Jack built’ will be one of the most memorable highlights from this year’s edition. On race day there will be parking at the long stay car parks, and frequent buses from Harrogate as well as trains from York and Leeds. Advice would be to arrive early. The best route for cyclists from Harrogate is via the Bilton Lane route onto the Beryl Burton Cycleway (Route 636). Check www.visitharrogate.co.uk/events/ tour-de-yorkshire for more details.

If you fancy a little more exercise in between races, further along the river at Conyngham Hall there’s the Games In The Park facility. It’s a great location for families to have fun at crazy golf, tennis or a more sedate 18 hole pitch and putt golf course.

New Festival Celebrates Women and Beer This May Harrogate will host a brand new beer festival with a difference – Women On Tap. by Rachel Auty

16 PreviewFeature

The festival is a celebration of women and beer -the women who brew it, the women who write about it, the women who drink it, the women who work in the industry, the women who want to learn more about it.. and their friends and partners. Recently mentioned in The Independent, the festival will present a selection of beers made by local female brewers - or ‘Brewsters’. Talks are currently underway with a number of local breweries, including Mallinsons and Baildon who are already on board, with more in the pipeline. In addition to a female-led quality beer selection, the plan is that the festival programme will comprise a talk, a tasting, live music, and an art exhibition – all by female experts and talented creative women. It‘s been confirmed that featured on the programme will be Melissa Cole - award–winning beer and food writer, sommALEier, Certified Cicerone®, and author of www.letmetellyouaboutbeer.co.uk

All of this is set to take place under the Little Ale House roof in Harrogate over 48 hours. Festival founder Rachel Auty explains,

“The Little Ale House was an obvious choice for this WoTFest debut – owners Richard and Danni have quickly created a lovely welcoming space and a reputation for great beer, right in the heart of the town. They’re more of a WoTFest partner than just a venue.” So where did the idea come from? Rachel says, “There’s been talk in recent times of how to get more women into beer. Rather than doing that why not simply highlight and celebrate the leadership, innovation and expertise that women in the beer industry are demonstrating on a daily basis? WoTFest is designed to do just that, with a primary focus on Yorkshire. I hope that this will become a popular and well-respected annual event.” Women On Tap Beer Festival (WOT Fest) - The Little Ale House, Cheltenham Crescent, Harrogate - weekend of 19 May 2017 - www.facebook.com/WoTFest

What brings you to Harrogate? I’m busy rehearsing The Emperor’s New Clothes – a contemporary take on Hans Christian Andersen’s cheeky tale by the creative team behind Harrogate’s muchloved pantomime

What particularly appealed to you about this new project?

What’s the best – and worst – thing about being ‘in the business’? The best thing is working with like-minded people. And the worst? Not working; resting.

Have you worked in Harrogate before?

The script is really good fun and witty and even though we are only a few days into rehearsals I’m already very much enjoying the original music – the songs are very catchy and I have them running around my head right now….

Yes, the first time was in 2001 (In Tears of a Clown and Macbeth). Then I have been in the wonderful pantomimes – Dick Whittington, Beauty and the Beast, and Cinderella twice. The last time I was here was when I was an ugly sister in Cinderella the year before last.

Tell us more about your role in the show…

What are you most looking forward to over the next few weeks in Harrogate?

I’m the misguided Emperor and I’m married to the Empress. We have a daughter with an unusual name. I’m obsessed with clothes and being fashionable; a trend-setter. For the rest you’ll have to wait and see.

Working with a well-run and very friendly theatre. Some nice Spring weather would be good too, but I won’t hold my breath!

Is there an overall career highlight you can tell us about?

The Emperor’s New Clothes is going to be a brilliant show for all the family from a tried-and-tested creative team. Expect a lot of fun and laughs, all topped off with great music and memories.

Years ago now I was part of a theatre company, Compass, that regularly took classic plays to Tokyo. I absolutely loved working there: I find Japan a fascinating place.

Why should people come and see The Emperor’s New Clothes?

Film Festival a reel success by Haigh Simpson

Harrogate’s inaugural film festival was a huge success with 16 events, five of which sold out, and hundreds of people in attendance across the eight venues. 3 - 5 March 2017 saw the launch of the sponsor-led event, where 23 local and national businesses came together to put on the Festival for the Harrogate community. The experience screenings were a huge success, inspired by similar London events. Visitors to the sold out 8:30pm screening of Shaun Of The Dead at Hales Bar said, “We loved it.” Participants at Harrogate Council’s Night At The Museum at the Royal Pump Room Museum said, “When are you doing more of this? It’s great fun.” Sponsored by Raworths Solicitors and held at Everyman Cinema, the Independent Filmmaker’s competition was won by Pedro Nogueira with the Portuguese drama Livre. Pedro Nogueira commented, “This is something I never could imagine, I’m very grateful. I want to thank all the people and all the judges.” David Gilbert, based in Bradford, won the Audience Choice Awards sponsored by Raworths, with his thriller film Polterhiest.

Filmmakers from Spain, Italy, Bulgaria, Turkey, United States and Canada also enjoyed success across the awards. The Festival’s fast-moving highlights video is now online at www.youtube.com/ watch?v=M16dLk8dKMg Finally, the filmmaking workshop went down a treat. Led by Rad Miller from Pocket Projects, who also collaborates with Channel 4, the event taught people how to plan, film and edit within a two-hour workshop, and the participants, working in groups, finished three complete films. Emelia Spofforth-Jones of Everyman Cinemas described the weekend as, “A superb film festival that celebrates Harrogate as a film centre of the UK.” Adam Chandler, director of the festival, summed up, “The first film festival went down extremely well with our audiences. I’m delighted to have an event in the town with so much innovation, diversity and audience reach. There truly was something for everyone and I can’t wait to announce our events for 2018 later this year.” Review Feature 23

On the cover... Anita Bowerman This month’s cover artist and the official artist for the Tour de Yorkshire Anita Bowerman discusses her life and work. by Haigh Simpson

24 Interview Feature

How did you get into illustration? Art, design and painting have always been part of my life. I have a love of drawing which is an essential skill for the technique of paper cutting. The only tools I use to cut paper are a very sharp knife, my eyesight, a pencil and rubber. I draw all my designs on the back of the paper first so everything is back to front until turned over. I was first intrigued by paper cutting some years ago when visiting Switzerland and seeing the folklore designs which the shepherds hand cut with scissors.

How did you develop your own style? I think all artwork reflects your own personality and the style I’ve developed is a result of spending hundreds of hours’ paper cutting. I’ve always been interested in detail and when on the phone or thinking, I doodle tiny animals and birds. It’s this love which led me to become interested in perfecting the art of paper cutting and illustrating stories - incorporating my mini doodles in each scene. I use a tiny, sharp scalpel to hand-cut each piece of paper, building up the layers to create each illustration. I don’t need spectacles – yet! Each design is becoming more and more intricate. Spot the bird, or dog…

Are there any projects you’re particularly proud of ? A one metre paper-cut map, showing the route of The Grand Depart Stage 1 in Yorkshire 2014, culminating with the finish in Harrogate. This took me six months to research and paper cut from one piece of paper and it shows all the attractions, stately homes historical details, cyclists, animals and people enjoying themselves. The Mayor of Harrogate, Councillor Mike Newby, then unveiled it. Limited edition prints are still available.

In 2015 I became the first Tour de Yorkshire official artist and created a paper cut, limited edition prints and a stainless steel wheel design with cyclists around the edge. You can see these displayed on the walls of William and Victoria Restaurant, Cold Bath Road, Harrogate, the Harrogate Tourist Information Office, on my website and in my gallery.

What’s your relationship with Harrogate? I love everything about Harrogate and have built up great relationships with some of the local businesses and people. The Tourist Information Centre, Mercer Art Gallery, Bean and Bud, William and Victoria and Go Yoga on Cold Bath Road, Fit to Bust and The Local Pantry in Huby have all been supportive and display my artwork. I have also had work in Weetons. There are some stunning buildings in Harrogate which I have done paper cuts from, such as William and Victoria and Bettys - all available in prints. The Mercer art gallery now organises trips around Harrogate so I’m very pleased to welcome new faces to my gallery.

Are you looking forward to the Tour de Yorkshire? Yes, it will be exciting having some of the best cyclists in the world once again cycle up Parliament Street. It will recreate that memorable 2014 Tour de France event and bring the eyes of the world on Harrogate and Yorkshire.

What was the idea behind your cover design? It’s a miniature paper cut map depicting the route of Stage 2 of Tour de Yorkshire 2017. It starts in Tadcaster, famous for its bridge and brewery, then on to Knaresborough with its iconic bridge, Ripon with its cathedral, Interview Feature 25

past Fountains Abbey, finishing in Harrogate on the Stray. It’s similar in style to the Grand Depart 2014 map and features the famous cherry trees with hundreds of paper cut pink dots stuck on, the cyclists, people, dogs, together with iconic buildings on or adjacent to Parliament Street such as Bettys and the Royal Hall. It took days to complete. Prints are available.

Describe your perfect working environment The Dove Tree Art Studio, my working studio and art gallery is perfectly situated in the centre of Harrogate on Back Granville Road near the Theatre, behind Cardamom Black Restaurant. I refurbished it five years ago in the French atelier style in pale blue/green and white with quirky details such as the grand piano allegedly used at the opening of the Eiffel Tower. It’s a two-storey building where I also teach adult painting classes, 26 Interview Feature

and all my clients seem to be inspired by the calm, tranquil environment.

What do you like to do when you’re not illustrating? I love to paint outside with my sheepdog Poppy. For me there’s no better way of capturing the bright colours and atmosphere of our stunning local landscape than being outside, either in Harrogate or the surrounding countryside such as Almscliffe Crag or further afield. Catch me painting on the Stray in May. I sometimes use twigs, moss and leaves to add marks to each painting. Cooking and swimming are also great loves. Mastering music, speech and drama

A look at the long and fruitful history of the Harrogate Competitive Festival for Music, Speech and Drama by Alan Connell

When this edition of the Harrogate Review went to press, the Harrogate Competitive Festival for Music, Speech and Drama was two thirds of the way through its annual three weekend run. Hundreds of performers had already played, acted, sung and recited at the Festival’s excellent new home in the new Harrogate High School and many more were set for the third weekend, featuring the Final Concert and including the final of the Young Musician Of The Festival competition. By the time you read this the planning will already have started for the 2018 festival.

30 Preview Feature

The Harrogate Competitive Festival for Music, Speech and Drama was founded in 1936 by Mr A.T. Akeroyd, who was then organist of St Mark’s Church and a busy music teacher. Until 1980 it was organised mainly by Harrogate Borough Council with the help of a voluntary committee. The first winner of the piano scholarship of ten guineas presented by Sir Ernest Bain was Miss Margaret Plummer, who became a professor at the Royal College of Music and an adjudicator, in which capacity she officiated at the Festival in 1970. The first Festival was mainly held in the Royal Hall. It was opened by the Mayor of Harrogate and the final concert concluded with a performance of Jerusalem by the audience and performers. Over the course of three days more than 3,000 people competed.

The Council’s involvement in the Festival administration ended in 1980 and it has subsequently been run entirely by volunteers, currently led by the chairman Paul Dutton and secretary Linda Wilson, who says, “The Festival gives people of all ages the opportunity to perform in front of an audience and to receive a professional adjudication from which they can learn and build on their skills year on year.” The Festival was music-based until 1966 when verse speaking was added, followed shortly by the drama section. This year 1,854 people will have participated in almost 175 separate classes, ranging from Solo Acting to the Year 13 And Under Woodwind Group class, with Brass, Harp, Musical Theatre and A Talk On Any Subject (to name just a few) in between. Performers mainly come from within a 20 mile radius but 175 have travelled over 50 miles to compete and one person came from London!

All this activity has to be managed and, together with unstinting help from some High School staff, a team of dedicated voluntary stewards staffed the door, prepared handwritten certificates, assisted adjudicators and actually ran the classes, ensuring that all the performers young and not so young got to do their best. This year there were 47 stewards filling 196 working slots in four performance rooms. Three stewards have been volunteering for over 30 years. Many past performers have gone on to achieve great things. Linda Wilson says, “It’s enormously rewarding to know that we have played a part in that process.” And all the volunteers would agree with that sentiment.
