Editor’s Note It’s probably a little late to still be saying ‘Happy New Year’, but there it is. I said it. The audience gathers for Beauty and the Beast. #panto By @CPHarrogate
Welcome to the Feb/ Mar issue. In it we start to look ahead to spring – lighter evenings, warmer days, and in turn the increased opportunities to ‘get out there’. As usual we have a strong focus on supporting our local independent businesses. This issue puts a spotlight on local restaurant, Norse, local brewery, Roosters, and local festival Women On Tap. Local ‘celebrity’ DJ Trev is at it again; we hear more about local food tours; and we reveal the fascinating back-story behind local micropub, The Little Ale House.
A cold day in Harrogate! by @HarrogateTown
We are also incredibly lucky to have the Harrogate Film Festival returning in March, so there’s more on that inside, and I present a lowdown of the cultural offer for spring at one of our oldest local indies - Harrogate Theatre. What’s more with half term approaching there are some great ideas for family days out, and Rufus Beckett is back talking about the local music scene. We’ve also got all the usual listings, so put the kettle on or grab a drink from the bar and start planning what you might do with all that extra daylight.

Food & Drink Happy 25th year, Roosters Knaresborough’s very own brewery, Roosters, are celebrating 25 years in 2018. To mark this occasion they’ve decided to celebrate by brewing a bunch of beers with some of our favourite brewers and breweries across 2018.
Norse under threat On 2 January a blog post was published by Paul Rawlinson, owner of Balzersens and Director of Norse restaurant, both independents in Harrogate. The blog highlighted that Norse is struggling. A difficult period from September to November last year has resulted in the numbers not adding up. This post acted as a reminder of the vulnerability of our small local businesses. ‘Use them or lose them’ may be a phrase thrown around but ultimately, it’s the absolute truth. Paul asked for support and in return offered change “with the aim of attracting new guests and tempting some previous guests back” Survival is a responsibility on both sides of a business. Paul’s honesty about the reality of the climate we live in is refreshing. Hopefully it will help to stabilise this much-loved local restaurant, and inspire others feeling similar struggles to open up too. norserestaurant.co.uk
Having initially set out to brew one collaboration a month, they have ended up with seventeen lined up! Starting with Huddersfield brewery Magic Rock, collaboration beers will also be brewed with Tiny Rebel (based in South Wales), London breweries Beavertown, Camden and Fourpure, plus Dark Star, Hawkshead, North Brewing and Thornbridge. What’s more, a number of US brewers will be heading to Yorkshire to collaborate – Bale Breaker, Freewheel, Green Cheek, Odell, Oskar Blues, Ska and Yorkshire Square. Finally, Amundsen will be bobbing over from Norway. Watch out for the fruits of their labours coming soon to a pump near you.
Women On Tap Beer Festival to return this May Plans are in progress for the 2018 Women On Tap Beer Festival. The first ever Women On Tap was held at The Little Ale House in May 2017 and featured guest beers brewed by women and by breweries with female leadership, alongside an art exhibition, live music, and some ticketed beer tasting sessions run by one of the UK’s leading beer experts – the awardwinning Melissa Cole. The 2018 Festival is scheduled for 2-6 May and although the main festival hub will once again be The Little Ale House, plans are afoot to hold events at a range of other pubs across the both Harrogate and Knaresborough. The festival is a celebration of women in the beer industry and is for anyone who enjoys or wants to know more about beer, irrespective of gender.

Dj Trev ve-gans oot For January my girlfriend has us doing vegan. I’d like to point out for me this isn’t a conscience thing. I’m doing it to support my girlfriend and fancied seeing if I could lose some weight this way; but this isn’t a column about weight loss or conscience, it’s about food, so don’t worry. I generally eat healthily, because I drink unhealthily and try to mitigate that. The logic is flawed, but equally, if someone must smoke, then it’s better to smoke fags rather than crack. Healthy eating out is tricky; restaurants mainly want to give you something that tastes nice; it’s easier to make things taste nice if you smother bacon with cheese before wrapping it around a stick of butter, so when it comes to trying to eat vegan for a month, I thought it might be challenging, but I’ve been pleasantly surprised. Clearly the food industry is coming around to healthy eating, and if you can be bothered there are great options out there. Here are two stand out ones. I eat regularly at Fodder; it has great lunchtime food. Since going and being “that guy” who asked every week for a vegetarian breakfast, they actually added one to the menu. It’s really good and sets me up for a full day of thinking I’m being really productive, before spending 10 minutes looking at every job I need to do and going off and doing something else. The staff there are lovely, and I often ask for slight changes to what is on the menu, and it’s never a problem. They accommodate whatever random thing I’m into, up to and including teaching the new guy how to make eggy bread, presumably for “the bad hair man who always orders it.” I think eggy bread is going to be my kryptonite when it comes to veganism, as it has made me want to crack every time I think of an egg cracking. Fodder always delivers good food, every time. When you google eating-out-vegan-Harrogate, the first place to pop up is Balterzen’s. Offering an interesting Norwegian take on lunch, Balterzen’s has a forward thinking approach to surviving the challenging high street. I went into vegan January with a sigh and a shrug, and wasn’t expecting to be blown away with a range of flavours and intriguing dishes (when eating at home it’s helping the weight drop off because I’m… not really eating at home because it’s boring).
By DJ Trev
The vegan options at Balterzen’s however are really interesting. My girlfriend had the Norweigan stew, an ideal winter dish, hearty, wholesome, but also really tasty and as far removed from a dull vegetable stew as I could imagine. I had a maple and honey roasted veg open sandwich. I wasn’t honestly looking forward to it, I would have been happy if I could merely tolerate it – but wow! This was delicious! The girlfriend had food envy and I actually wiped the plate clean. The flavours and textures compliment each other superbly - citrusy vegan coleslaw type thing is the ideal side - with some hummus in there, this was a sensation. They also have a range of different milk substitutes and I have to say that the latte I had there, as a BIG latte fan, tasted as good as a normal one. This is really something I have dramatically failed to achieve at home, which I guess is one of the main reasons for eating out isn’t it? Whilst I won’t be keeping on with veganism the rest of the year, I will be using this as a jump off point for cutting down on meat and dairy, it’s helping me manage my weight more easily than usual and I feel great. This isn’t a party political broadcast on behalf of the V team, but the experience has been much more enjoyable than I expected. Dairy farmers can call Trev a bloody idiot every Friday at Revolucion De Cuba, where he plays old songs, and he does a highly inappropriate pub quiz every Sunday at 10 Devonshire Place. He also plays Saturdays in Manchester, but let’s be realistic, you are not going that far for that guy.

There is no greater love than the love of food

Food tourism is growing. The latest trends show visitors looking to delve into the culture of a place and with food being such an integral part of any culture, they want to eat their way round town. A food tour allows such an experience. These visitors arrive in Harrogate blinking out of the station or Jubilee car park and wonder where to start. The independent scene in the town is thriving with a cornucopia of eateries which are at their disposal. Only a good couple of weeks background reading of tour guides and trip advisor can help them prepare a route to get the most out of the town which is where a Food Tour comes in.
stories of the people and the history (but not too much, I’m not Tony Robinson) but I’m lazy when it comes to the background reading. So having a knowledgeable person who would guide me round, feeding me interesting information not to mention feeding me a delicious selection of locally sourced treats, makes for my ideal afternoon. Since then the first thing I look for when visiting a new place is a food tour.
I did my first tour in Chicago in 2011. By accident, and some lacklustre browsing for something to do, I came across such an experience. I love food, I love finding out about the town I’m visiting, I love the
Harrogate is a perfect place for a food tour. Let’s face it, North Yorkshire is blessed in terms of the locally sourced produce it can provide. Yorkshire puddings, brisket, cheese, beer...I could go on. In Harrogate
we are lucky to have local entrepreneurs who put their passion into their food businesses and want to share their dream. Food & Drink
Food tours generally take around three hours and visit five local establishments, where the participants sample some fantastic local fare and the guide gives you insight into the stories and histories of these businesses. In between stops, you hear about the history and culture of the town. Think of it as a long lunch with a gentle stroll between courses. You will feel pleasantly full at the end, both in mind and stomach, and so it represents very good value for money as it includes all your food and drink, of which there is plenty. Food tours tend to be run by local people with a passion for food and their home town and Yorkshire Appetite Food Tours is no exception. I have my roots firmly in Yorkshire and want to show people that there is more to our town than Bettys and the Turkish Baths, as great as they are. There are so many aspects to Harrogate and in showing visitors around we are sharing the love and supporting independent businesses. These tours are not only for visitors from far away, locals have found a new side to their town and a few more places to try and with a cry of ‘I didn’t know that’ they are reawakened to what a fantastic place this is. Food always brings people together and food tours are no exception. Whether you are meeting new people on the tours or simply sharing a quality experience with friends or family, you are connected with others. So if you’re visiting Harrogate or travelling away soon – look out for a food tour, you won’t be disappointed! Where conversation is king Food & Drink
by Rachel Auty
The Little Ale House has only been open since June 2016 but has already won awards and is deemed one of Harrogate’s best bars, especially for beer lovers. Richard and Danni Park are the owners and are familiar faces at the LAH who are clearly masters of their art. However, running a micropub is only a fairly recent feature in the couple’s busy lives. I caught up with coowner Danni to find out more about their back-story. What did life look like for you and Rich before The Little Ale House? Very different. We were both living and working in London in office-based careers – I was working in operations management and recruitment, while Rich was working in politics. We were doing the whole rat race thing. Where did the idea for the LAH come from? We’ve both been very fussy when it comes to where we spend our free time (particularly Rich!). We love intimate places that have a passion for something. Back in 2013, we heard about ‘micropubs’ being set up in Kent. They sounded right up our street, so we did a micropub tour along the Thanet coast. On the train home from Broadstairs we decided to quit our careers and give it a shot. The Little Ale House is our slant on the micropub concept. Why Harrogate? As we’d been a bit radical in deciding to pack in our careers, we thought we might as well go the whole hog and pick any location we fancied. Our criteria was a place that
14
was pleasing on the eye, had a good community spirit, nice restaurants/pubs, and was nearish family and good countryside. Harrogate ticks a lot of boxes. Did you have any glitches along the way? Well the day Rich left London he had a phone call from the estate agent managing the current location – we’d failed in our bid. four other potential sites, one successful planning, one failed lease, and a year of ‘Rich doing odd jobs’ later, we eventually got the site we have now. It wasn’t easy! What do you feel makes the LAH so successful? That we’re honest. We stick to serving what we like in an atmosphere that we enjoy. We’ve got a really nice community feel, where conversation is king. We don’t buckle under pressure – we haven’t made a shandy yet… Looking back, would you have done anything differently? To be honest, I wouldn’t change much. I would have liked not to have had 2 jobs

USA Beer Festival 2018 1- 28 February, North Bar Harrogate Richard and Danni Park gave up their careers to set up micro-pub The Little Ale House.
for the first year though. 75 hrs + a week wasn’t that sustainable! How do you think a regular customer would describe the LAH?
February sees the return of the USA Beer Festival at North Bar Harrogate. Each year North Bar celebrates the incredible craft beer America has to offer, from classic Sierra Nevada Pale Ale to rare specialities like Black Market’s Watermelon Gose. There’s something for everyone to enjoy, as the bar serves an array of imported American beers, has exclusive pours on tap and hosts events throughout the month.
Honest, homely, nice atmosphere, good quality drinks. What’s your favourite beer? Anything well brewed. I love strong and dark. Locally you can’t go wrong with a Harrogate Brew Co Plum Porter. I’m also partial to a nice fruity hopped IPA – Roosters’ Baby Face Assassin does the trick. What are your plans for 2018? We’ve just taken on our first full time member of staff – Freddie. A lovely young chap who will enable us to not close down when we need a holiday, and we’ll be opening on Mondays. Also watch this space for the 2nd Women On Tap Beer Festival and cheese boards… Describe your job in three words.
The festival kicks off with a tap takeover from, US craft beer legends, Stone Brewing. As part of the Stone Brewing Berlin Cornerstone Programt, the bar gets exclusive access to some of Stone’s most special beers. From Thursday 1st to Sunday 4th February they’ll be pouring their brand-new Merch Machine DIPA and serving a selection of Stone beers from the USA and Berlin. Later in the month, North Bar Harrogate will be celebrating its 2nd birthday with a proper party and a tasting from SweetWater Brewery. And to close the USA Beer Festival, they will be hosting a tap takeover from US craft beer pioneers Sierra Nevada. So pop down for a true taste of American craft beer.

The Shape of Water
Theatre & Performance
Film
Film Review with Henry Thompson Mexican writer/director Guillermo del Toro’s The Shape of Water could hardly arrive on UK screens this month with more acclaim. With a Golden Globe win and BAFTA nomination, along with unrestrained critical rapture, del Toro’s film is a tour de force in genre-bending and imaginative story-telling. Perhaps best known to UK audiences for Pan’s Labyrinth (2006), del Toro here delivers a Cold War era drama about a captured sea creature of unknown provenance and a worker at a government research facility. Del Toro has talked at length about the political sub-texts he sees in horror and science fiction stories and not surprisingly therefore, the film works not just as drama but as a subtle critique of authoritarianism and American exceptionalism.
26
Having secured a career in acting through roles in Frances Ha (2012), Jackie (2016) and Twentieth Century Women (2016) Greta Gerwig’s solo directorial debut Lady Bird also arrives on UK screens in February. Gerwig’s career started not with acting but writing contributions to several independent productions within the ‘mumblecore’ subgenre of independent filmmaking which foregrounded naturalism and dialogue. Whilst she shared directing duties on one of these productions (Nights and Weekends, 2008)
Gerwigs’s new film gives her full rein as writer and director. The film follows the eponymous Lady Bird as she completes her final year at school. Gerwig’s ability as a writer lifts this story above the cinematic clichés of American high school life we have become accustomed to, for this is not melodrama but a more studied examination of adolescence and the transition to adulthood. Whilst March offers some interesting screening options, including a well-received documentary titled Bombshell: The Hedy Lamarr Story, the real attraction must surely be the Harrogate Film Festival (2-4 March) hosted at the Everyman and several other venues around the town. The short film competition in six categories (music, horror, documentary, comedy, drama, crime) screens at the Everyman on Saturday and Sunday. The festival also includes experience events for both adults and families offering the chance to see, for example, Night at the Museum, Skyfall and Reservoir Dogs. More details and tickets are at: www.harrogatefilm.co.uk The festival is now in its second year and its success confirms the presence of a strong local audience for independent and auteur cinema. Henry Thompson is Research Fellow in film at the University of Manchester. His acclaimed book on American film director Oliver Stone (co-authored with Ian Scott) was released in 2016.

The Thing that Came From Over There
John Cooper Clarke
7 March, 7.30pm, Harrogate Theatre
John Cooper Clarke shot to prominence in the 1970s as the original people’s poet. Since then his career has spanned cultures, audiences, art forms and continents.
Inspired by the horror movies of the 1950s, The Thing That Came From Over There is a fast-paced rollicking ride, mixing paranoia, suspense and hilariously gruesome deaths. It’s 1912, and as Scott and Amundsen begin their race across Antarctica, the hapless explorer, Captain Reginald Cranston Scot-t-t, has accidentally landed on the wrong side of the continent. As Cranston and his motley band set up base camp, a meteor crashes nearby. Deciding to investigate, they set out towards the crash site - unaware of the danger that awaits not just them, but the whole of planet Earth. What ancient evil lurks inside the crater? What is the dark secret of the slimy fungus? And what is the horrifying fate of those who encounter the parasitic space worms? Join three daring actors as they play over 15 roles in 85 minutes of shocks, spine tingling silliness, and blood curdling terror. With comedy and thrills galore, the show features visual gags, verbal wit, giant puppetry, and even a little bit of live music.

Making waves: Harrogate’s burgeoning recording scene by Rufus Beckett
Not long ago most Harrogate-based musicians wanting to make an impact in the music industry would probably have ‘move to London’ fairly near the top of their list of priorities. The increased role of the internet in music and the increased cost of living in London seem to have changed that and the quality of the recording studio scene in Harrogate perhaps reflects this. Harrogate doesn’t boast a huge range of studios but developments in the past few years show that significant things are happening, and exciting times are on the horizon. Two studios in particular have been creating a stir. These are Warehouse and Homefire. Located near each other, these studios are placing themselves on the musical map in different ways. Warehouse has a strong musical pedigree and is connecting with a mature audience through its live shows, while Homefire was born out of the local DIY music
36
scene and is focused on supporting up and coming talent from Harrogate and beyond. As well as offering recording studios and playing host to a number of highly experienced session musicians, Warehouse has become known for its live shows. These gigs have drawn a range of internationally recognised country, rock and blues acts such as 80s legend Paul Young to the town and are regularly hosted by Radio 2 DJ Bob Harris. The fact that one of the most famous and longstanding music presenters in the country

Music
is doing this is surely something the town should be very proud of. On Friday 23 February Liverpool based record label Mellowtone will be showcasing two of its finest artists at Warehouse; the soulful Americana of Seafoam Green and the quirky, melancholic folk of Nick Ellis are not to be missed. Homefire may not have such strong links to the musical establishment but the folks there seem hell bent on creating a heritage of their own. The small team literally built the studio from scratch in 2013 and have quickly created a thriving community of talented musicians with a hunger to make an impact. They have achieved notable successes, from records of the week with BBC Radio to hosting photoshoots that have ended up on the front cover of Kerrang! magazine. Most excitingly though, they have just announced that they will be launching their own record label in the coming months. How great would it be to have a Harrogate based record label making an impression in the music industry? Homefire acts as a base for young musicians such as Lou Foulkes who has a significant following on YouTube, and Jake Pattinson who is a current favourite of BBC Introducing. It seems likely that acts like these would
traditionally have been drawn to London or Manchester but the quality of what Homefire offers them means this is not the case. There are numerous other smaller studios dotted around the town as well. Two of these are Creao and Whitenoise. Creao offers a range of services such as video, multimedia and design as well as a sound studio and regularly produces podcasts. It also hosts some of the town’s more interesting acts such as Guerilla Dub System. White Noise hosts a range of acts for rehearsals and recording and has recently invested in a new booth to offer DJs and dance acts top of the range equipment. It is clear then that the local studio scene offers a strong base for the next generation of musicians who may once have been tempted by the bright lights of the big smoke to be creative. These studios are attracting artists from around the country to Harrogate which will in turn have a positive effect on local talent. The combination of the rising costs of the capital, the ease of distributing music via the internet and these developments will surely enrich the culture of the town.
