Rail plans for Leeds Bradford Airport
Leeds Council has announced plans to open a new railway station at Leeds Bradford Airport as part of a £270 million transport shakeup. The station is set to be built on the existing Leeds to Harrogate line, around 1km from the airport and could help double its capacity. John Parkin, Leeds Bradford Airport chief executive, said, “This announcement is fantastic news for the millions of passengers who travel to and from Leeds Bradford Airport each year. As one of the country’s fastest growing regional airports, it is vital that we give passengers more choice about how they are able to get here. Investing in the public transport network in this way will enable people to travel to and from the airport easily, as well as create jobs and help to ease road congestion in the area.”

Francesca Dego
Francesca Dego is one of the most sought-after young violinists on the international scene. We caught up with her before she performs at Harrogate International Festivals’ Sunday Series this January. by Ann Chadwick 10 Lead Feature
Before she was born, Francesca Dego’s father was a lecturer at Leeds University for six years in the late 1960s, teaching Italian literature. It seems a long way from Italy, but, “He’s always spoken so much of Leeds as one of the best places he lived and taught!” Francesca says, speaking from her home in Milan. The 27 year-old violinist has a love of elegant fashion. Her Instagram account features selfies under #Italiangirl with statements such as ‘Confidence is sexy. Wear it daily.’ She’s been featured in the pages of Italian Vogue alongside her husband, the brilliant young conductor Daniele Rustioni, who she married in the glamorous setting of Lake Como. In 2008 she became the first Italian female prizewinner of the renowned Paganini Competition since 1961, as well as being the youngest finalist. She went on to score a recording contract with the Deutsche Grammophon label when most of her peers were still finishing graduate school.
Francesca agrees, to an extent, “It’s definitely changed over the past decade. We’re confronted with an ideal of perfection that isn’t possible in a live performance, people are expected to be like a CD when they play live.. but in the end it’s about communicating with the audience and that’s what the audience appreciates and feels. If we’re looking at the top musicians today, we’re in a pretty good place.” Recently she was picked by BBC Music Magazine as a rising star, but as she’s been playing for over a decade she insists her career has developed organically.
“ One of the most inspiring things in a career is the possibility of meeting and collaborating “ It was a turning point, but not at the time,” she with amazing people. This is the most enriching says. “It was really stressful for me. I lost six thing, not what you achieve CV-wise but the kilos during the competition. Francesca admits music is ‘all-consuming’, with her husband’s career too. “We don’t see

everyone wanted to break off with the postromantic past, it was abandoned. It’s great to rediscover these composers.” One of the striking things about Harrogate International Festivals’ Sunday Series is the number of young musicians it features, including, in 2017, 27 year-old clarinettist Julian Bliss, and 33 year-old pianist Alessandro Taverna. There have been many young musicians who sex up their image or put a rock ‘n’ roll spin on classical.
“ I don’t think that if everyone had the right access to classical music that you’d need to sell it to Audiences in Harrogate will experience a glimpse of her passion for the pre-war Italian young people. Elly said, “We’ll be digging into the past, and marking a few milestones reflected in our epic line-up of authors. Ian Rankin will be celebrating 30 years of Rebus, one of crime fiction’s greatest characters, and of course Lee Child has long reigned with his Jack Reacher series. We are incredibly excited too to welcome Kathy Reichs as a special guest.” Kathy Reichs debut Deja Dead catapulted her to fame 10 years ago. “ It’s an absolute honour. I’ve been lucky enough to be involved with the Festival really from the beginning of my time as a crime writer. I’ve been encouraged so much by a lot of established authors there like Ann Cleeves and Val McDermid, so it feels almost surreal for me to be the programming chair a year after Peter James.”
2016’s event sold out, with 14,000 individual tickets over four days. It was cited as one of the UK’s top literary festivals in the Guardian and Elle magazine, and reached 8.2 million Twitter users, with 35.9 million impressions during the week of 2016’s Festival.
The Theakston Old Peculier Crime Writing Festival is known as a platform for new and upcoming authors, as well as showcasing blockbuster talent. Elly said, “One of the things I’d like to celebrate is our crime writing history but also look forward to the future. How did you get into illustration? A lot of my family are artists or in some creative practice and my Mum always encouraged me to draw from an early age, but it wasn’t until my foundation degree at Leeds College of Art that I knew that it was illustration and comics specifically I wanted to specialize in.
Where do you get your ideas from? It’s quite a generic answer but everywhere really. I’m hugely interested in people and their emotions which tend to be at the core of most of my work. Whether the idea comes from a small overheard conversation or through deeper research just varies from project to project.
Who are your favourite illustrators?
really. Even after most of my friends left for university I studied a Foundation Diploma in Art & Design at Leeds College of Art and was living at home so I had sort of a transitional year before moving away for university.
Do you spend much time in Harrogate these days? Where are your favourite places to hang out? I went to university in Kingston in South London and didn’t come home much due to workload and the time it took to get back but having graduated I’ve come back to Harrogate much more. I love coming back to Harrogate from London because it has the beautiful countryside that the North of England is famous for whilst also having great amenities in the town centre.

The Harrogate Girl Lifestyle blogger Victoria Turner talks to The Harrogate Review about blogging in her favourite town, the close-knit local blogging community, and her favourite places to visit in Harrogate. by Haigh Simpson
20 Interview Feature
Tell us a bit about yourself and why you set up The Harrogate Girl... I’m a 31 year-old singleton living in (what I think is) the best place to live. During the day I work for Bettys & Taylors in their PR and Communications Department. Part of my job is blogger engagement and after being inspired by a blogger event in London I started to search for bloggers in the local area. At the time there was no lifestyle blog and I thought if I don’t do it someone else will, so a year later here I am. I’ve just celebrated my first birthday, kindly hosted by Hotel du Vin and Slingsby Gin. I’m overwhelmed at the kind support the public and businesses have given me - I now have around 16,000 views each month. My favourite part of blogging is when people get in touch, saying they’re visiting Harrogate for the weekend and asking where they should stay or eat out. I feel like I’m giving something back to the town.
What do you like to write about? As a lifestyle blogger I cover a broad range of topics. My favourites are food and travel reviews, interiors and stories about Harrogate. I also like to share personal stories - from dating to my life experience. I’m lucky to live in a place which offers so much to its local residents. This year Harrogate has stepped up and offered a fantastic programme of events for just about every weekend. The more events it offers, such as the Food Festival in the Valley Gardens, the more tourism is generated for the town too.
about. I’ve made some great friends through this network - Harrogate Mama and I have regular meetups and often ask each other for advice. Other great bloggers in the area are Enjoy Harrogate, Kat Got the Cream and What Lizzie Loves. I’ve just hosted my first Harrogate LIVE event, set up by Jo Maltby, Graham Whitehead and myself. It’s an informal business networking event for the local businesses of Harrogate. The first event was held at the West Park Hotel in September and was a huge success. I was overwhelmed by the response from local business owners. The next event is on Thursday 27 October.
Where and when do you write most of your content? I’ve tried writing in coffee shops but I get too distracted by people. I’m such a people watcher! So I love to be huddled away in my apartment. It’s my little sanctuary where I can switch off and tinker away on the keys of my iPad. As I work full time most of my content is written during evenings and weekends. Blogging is a big commitment - I’d say that, along with attending events, I can spend 30 hours a week working on The Harrogate Girl blog.
Where is your favourite place to visit in Harrogate?
This is a really hard one to answer. I love a lot of places in Harrogate but there’s a bench near my apartment which I often frequent. It has a great view of the town and every time I sit there it reminds me how lucky I am to live in such a wonderful part of the world. Do you feel there is a strong blogging Crimple Hall is another haunt of mine. I go scene/community in and around for its fab antiques and interiors. Discover Harrogate with
Local entrepreneurs launch new app designed to promote Harrogate venues to residents and tourists. by Sandy Wright
24 Business Feature
A new app is allowing users to discover Harrogate and record their experiences. STAMP is a new mobile platform that helps you find the best places to visit using short geo-tagged videos, created by our users for its users. We caught up with the app developers to find out how it works. Why have you created STAMP? Our towns and cities are full of great local businesses, and Harrogate is no exception. So here at STAMP we wanted to create a platform that helps connect people to the best local establishments. Whether you’re looking for good coffee, romantic drinks or a great restaurant, STAMP is a useful tool for both locals and tourists alike.
Who created STAMP? We’re a local company! The STAMP team grew up in the Harrogate area. After seeing the rise (and occasional fall) of quality, local, independent businesses, we felt there was an opportunity to help showcase these fantastic establishments by empowering people to record their experiences at these locations.
How do I use STAMP? Through our app users can find great places to go, see the STAMP videos created by other users, and create their own short videos for others to enjoy. We’re working hard to create a platform that is simple, intuitive and fun to use.
What sort of locations will I find on your platform? STAMP will host all types of locations. It’s not just about the coffee shops and bars, we want STAMP to be a home for retailers and cultural experiences, as well as pop-ups and temporary events. We’re also giving users control over the places we feature in the app. Did we miss a great local place? You can submit your suggestions directly through the app!
Can I start using STAMP now? STAMP is still under development as we make improvements and add the finishing touches. But if you’re a sociable person who likes the idea of getting early access to our platform, we want you to help us put STAMP to the test. Sign up to our early access programme, and you can start leaving STAMP videos at your favourite places in Harrogate and Leeds.
Where can I find out more? We’re a sociable bunch. Feel free to say hello and find more information through any of the channels below. Join the early access programme by hitting ‘apply’ on our website.

Violet Store
Major Tom’s
A new addition to the Harrogate high street, Violet Store aims to be an aspirational brand appealing to women in and around the area.
Very very loveable Major Tom’s Social is a Harrogate bar that’s just a bit different. Far from the sleekness of Bar And Grill and miles from the cocktail atmosphere of Banyan, Major Tom’s is more reminiscent of your grandma’s front room in the 70s.
Curator and owner Sara Shaw handpicks high-end designer pieces alongside her own-label creations to help build a desirable and unique wardrobe for her clients. Sara’s passion in helping her customers find a personal style has seen her gain a loyal following in her previous fashion retail career. Sara’s own collection features customised vintage jeans, environmentally friendly canvas bags, and sweatshirts - a donation from every one sold will be given to Harrogate Homeless Charity. 40 The Best of Harrogate
With regular live music nights and a cinema screening of old classic movies every week, it’s a really easy place to relax with a crafty craft beer. And they don’t mess around with their beer choices. A chalk board highlights what’s on tap this week, sourcing regional ales from local breweries. Major Tom’s is all about local tastes and supporting independent businesses. The combination of awesome atmosphere, excellent beers and a sample of something different is both refreshing and exciting.

A Quick Chat with
Floyd Rhodes Floyd is a Jack Russell Terrier and runs the Dog Friendly Harrogate twitter acount, sharing dog-friendly venues, walks, cafes and pubs. What’s your name and what do you do? I’m Floyd, a Jack Russell Terrier, though my human says I’m a terriorist. I bark at postmen and anyone else who dares to walk down my path. Other than that I sleep a lot and take the human for walks.
Favourite place to hang around in and around Harrogate? There’s excellent places to hang out in Harrogate, most of the bars and cafes are dog-friendly with well-behaved humans. Major Tom’s is great for him to relax and have a pint and me to finish off his pizza or pork pie, No.11 Somerset is great for breakfast and lunch scraps. North Bar, Old Bell Tavern and the Italian Connection on Cold Bath Road are all good spots too.
Local event you could not live without? Sadly there are no major dog-friendly events in Harrogate to look forward to. I enjoy meeting up in the park with my four legged friends and chasing squirrels up trees, we always let them get away.
Name a guilty pleasure... My biggest guilty pleasure is having breakfast with my human at Millers Café in Starbeck, the biscuits and the sausages are great. The regulars always make a fuss and I get to meet my girlfriend.
