I have been working with Lauren on the magazine since its conception and I feel we have a really good platform from which to establish ourselves as a valued part of Harrogate’s cultural scene. We’ve been working hard to build relationships with cultural organisations, community groups and local businesses in order to achieve this and the response has been overwhelmingly positive. I hope this issue is as popular as the last one, which sparked a flurry of requests for extra copies, which is a huge compliment and incredibly encouraging. We have some great content from our contributors this month including a special pullout feature on the Harrogate International Film Festival, and an indepth preview of Harrogate Theatre’s Summer Season. Entries open for annual Bed Race
Entries are now open for the 2017 Great Knaresborough Bed Race, which will take place on 10 June. Teams have until the end of February to return their entry forms to the event organisers, the Knaresborough Lions Club. The event always draws attention for its fancy dress efforts and this year’s theme is Heroes And Villains. Entry fees have been frozen at last year’s level and there are spaces for 90 teams of six to take part. Chairman of the organising group Richard Hall said, “Hopefully, expenses for official approvals, traffic management and other requisites will not have increased, so we have decided to keep down the cost of entry.” The Great Knaresborough Bed Race was first held in 1966 and has raised thousands of pounds for charities and good causes over the past 52 years. Refurb for Royal Pump Room
Harrogate’s Royal Pump Room has reopened after an extensive refurbishment of the 1842 room. The Museum, which once served around 1,500 glasses of sulphur water a day, now tells the fashionable story of Harrogate and the making of the English spa town. New attractions include a scientist in residence, finding out more about the science behind the sulphur and discovering how medical science today has developed from the spa treatments of the past. There’s also a new costume parade, featuring dazzling and colourful party dresses inspired by Harrogate’s glamorous past. A world-famous collection of ancient Egyptian treasures, including an Anubis mask worn by the priest during mummification, is always on display and visitors can take daily guided tours to the basement of the museum to see the original wells and learn about their role in the development of Harrogate as a spa town.

Harrogate Beer Festival
Harrogate and District Round Table host the 27th annual Harrogate Beer Festival at The Crown Hotel by Haigh Simpson
12 Interview Feature
What can you tell me about the plans for this year’s beer festival? This year we have a strong beer festival committee and, after conducting a survey of the attendees last year, we listened to the comments so we could strengthen the event. Firstly, whilst the beer festival has an amazing party atmosphere we mustn’t forget that it is a ‘beer festival’ so again we have enlisted the help of Jonathan Manby from Theakston’s Brewery to ensure we have our finger on the pulse of real ale trends. As usual we have a fantastic lineup of live music across the three days and we’ll be joined by the Claro Sword Morris dancers again.
How did the event come about? The Festival is in its 27th year now and has grown from very humble beginnings at a sports or social club somewhere behind the Granby Hotel. All those years ago a few of the Round Table members thought it would be a good idea to drive to Masham and buy a few barrels, most likely for their own consumption. Since then the event has outgrown the venue and moved to bigger and more exciting venues. We truly feel at home at The Crown Hotel.
How strong is the local brewing industry at the moment and how helpful have they been in supporting the event? I think it is fair to say that the small independent brewer has seen a huge rise in trade over the last few years, as there’s a growing interest from a younger generation eager to taste lovingly-brewed ales rather than mass-produced lagers.
Name your top three tipples... We have yet to confirm the beers at this year’s festival, although I can assure you if we have them again I will most certainly partake in a pint of Hawkshead Brewery’s Windermere Pale, Bad Co. Brewery’s Comfortably Numb and a Roosters Brewery Calypso.
Who else is involved and how do you organize/operate the festival? There are about 30 members aged 18 – 45 in Harrogate and District Round Table, from all walks of life, and we do this in our spare time. This year we have a committee of six for the beer festival and preparation starts pretty much as soon as one festival ends. We take part in other activities during the rest of the year, like our Soap Box Derby event and the bonfire and fireworks on the Stray, so other members of the 30-strong team will be looking after those events. We then all club together on event days to make the whole thing happen. We also mustn’t forget the help we receive from local charities as each year we get help from many volunteers over the course of the three-day event who religiously turn up to pour pints or work the cloakroom.
When is it and how can people get tickets? The Festival takes place at The Crown Hotel in Harrogate on 16, 17, and 18 of March. For more details or to purchase a ticket head to www.harrogatebeerfestival.co.uk Tickets can also be bought on the door although it is advisable to pre-purchase.
It’s becoming harder every year to pick a final list of beers for the festival as there’s so much choice. The Harrogate Beer Festival wouldn’t be so successful without the help we receive from local brewers like Daleside and Theakston’s. Interview Feature 13

Dr Adam Rutherford
On 9 March three expert speakers will deliver inspiring TED-style talks on the theme of Caring in the latest Berwins Salon North event. Harrogate Review spoke to one of the speakers – author, broadcaster, scientist and geek, Dr Adam Rutherford. by Ann Chadwick
Your website describes you as a geek amongst other things – will geeks inherit the earth? Geeks are just people who are interested in stuff. And we’ve already taken over. Next time you make a phone call, or use the internet, or take some medicine, have a think about who invented it.
Your book Creation is about the origin and future of life – can we ever truly understand what life is all about? Can we understand life? Yes, we know tonnes about how biology works, but true enlightenment in science is the realisation of how little we know. Science is a neverending question, and as long as there are living things to study the saga continues.
So, big question – what is it all about? What if, as that Hallmark card says, the Hokey Pokey IS what it’s all about? I consult others for the big questions. Kurt Vonnegut said, “Welcome to Earth. It’s hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It’s round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you’ve got a hundred years here. There’s only one rule that I know of, babies goddamn it, you’ve got to be kind.”
Do you have any big future predictions around the human race and evolutionary biology? All I know about humans is that making predictions is hard, especially about the future. But as long as we keep having babies we’ll keep evolving, and I’ll have stuff to write about.
Intriguingly you’ve been scientific advisor on a few movies – any big science-inspired movies in the pipeline for 2017? I’ve been working on two big films out this year, both amazing in different ways. The first is called Life, set on the International Space Station, with Jake Gyllenhaal and Ryan Reynolds, and a rather aggressive organism that I helped design. The second is called Annihilation, directed by Alex Garland (with whom I worked on Ex Machina), and stars Natalie Portman and Oscar Isaac. That has an alien too, the likes of which you have never seen before, I promise.
What are the biggest challenges in our future that scientists face? Are you optimistic or pessimistic about the future? The biggest challenge we face is the tyranny of idiocy. Climate change is real. Vaccines work and are safe. Evolution is a fact. There are dark forces afoot in this world. But science is a constant revolution, and rebellions are built on hope.
Salon North is a TED-style event, what do you hope audiences will leave with after experiencing your talk? If they stay awake that’s a boon, if they’ve learnt something then I’m doing my job. Berwins Salon North: Caring, is on Thursday 9 March at The Crown Hotel, Harrogate, 7.30pm. Book online at harrogateinternationalfestivals.com or Box Office: 01423 562 303

How did you get into illustration?
an animation or simply a self-initiated drawing, you have to get involved and see it from the end users perspective. If they are not captured by it, then I have not done my job correctly.
I’ve always drawn, my Dad taught me. He would paint and draw in his spare time. As a child I’d be amazed at his ability to capture things on paper and canvas. Both my parents were very encouraging when it came to creativity. I then followed my abilities into What’s your relationship with Harrogate? the creative industry, I am very lucky that my It’s the place I always come back to. In a way it’s my security blanket, something I style, is that something you worked know, that feels comfortable. towards or did it come naturally? I really am unsure. As an illustrator, style can often be dictated by the brief of the project. But ink and crosshatching is a method I really enjoy. It’s very involved, allencompassing. Sometimes it’s scary how much time goes by while I’m doing it!
Are there any projects you’re particularly proud of ? There is of course a certain amount of pride in every project. Whether that be the resulting image, the process, learnings made or perhaps the relationship that was built with the client. I was commissioned to create an illustration to be used for a campaign on social media, it was very encouraging to see people appreciate and engage with it in real time. Plus I had to do it on a tea bag, so the work was quite challenging too.
Describe your perfect working environment. Music, kettle, ink and a juicy internet connection.
What keeps you busy when you’re not illustrating? We have two dogs, so they take up a lot of our time when not working. I love hanging out with my friends. I love spending time with my family.
Who are your most interesting clients? I have to be careful not to indirectly insult people here! Though projects and clients have different levels of interesting, I think it’s important to find the ‘interesting’ in projects, otherwise they can become stale. The Frazer Theatre Comedy Club
The Frazer Theatre Comedy Club continues 2017 with another eclectic selection of hugely talented comedians on Friday 3 February. Gareth Richards’ hilarious stand-up, silly jokes and gorgeously low-key comedy songs have made him an instant favourite on the comedy circuit. In 2010 he was nominated for Foster’s Edinburgh Comedy Award Best Newcomer. Using a multi-track looper and pedals, Vince Atta creates live on-the-spot hip-hop/ reggae/techno/anything, hilariously fusing it with natural stand-up, storytelling and characters. Sarah Keyworth delivers a mix of honest anecdotal storytelling about her Midlands upbringing while Thom Tuck is forging a fantastic reputation, both solo and as part of the Penny Dreadfuls, which belies his relatively short number of years on the scene so far. One in two of us will experience cancer first-hand and now Toby Peach brings this universal issue to the stage. The Eulogy Of Toby Peach is the story of his journey with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, a cancer of the lymph nodes that he faced at the age of 19 and again at 21. Toby didn’t know what cancer was, what happens when it’s treated and the effects it can have. A eulogy is a celebration of life - we will all need one. Toby is just delivering his now. Join Toby as he enters the (not so) exclusive Cancer Club, sample chemotherapy cocktails, select the perfect funeral playlist and marvel at Willy Wonka’s lifesaving stem cell machine. From diagnosis to remission, relapse and treatment, experience a young man’s journey with cancer in this honest, fascinating and inspiring exploration of modern science and the wonders of the human body. 16 February, Harrogate Theatre www.harrogatetheatre.co.uk
Frankenstein @ Harrogate Theatre
Marking the 200th anniversary of the creation of Frankenstein, Blackeyed Theatre’s brand new stage adaptation of Mary Shelley’s gothic horror masterpiece embarks on a five-month UK tour. Adapted by John Ginman, who penned Blackeyed Theatre’s hugely successful 2013 production of Dracula, this production fuses bold ensemble storytelling, live music, puppetry and stunning theatricality to create a fresh telling of what has become a landmark work of literature. A unique feature of the production is the use of Bunrakustyle puppetry to portray The Creature. Designed and built by Yvonne Stone (Warhorse, His Dark Materials), the full size 6’4” puppet, which needs up to three people to manipulate it, adds an exciting new dimension to the retelling of the classic story. 2-4 February, Harrogate Theatre www.harrogatetheatre.co.uk Picks of the Month 39

Bias
The Fat Badger
Sitting amongst the lovely, independent stores on Cold Bath Road, BIAS Harrogate sells a range of Scandinavian and European clothing. Stylish, smart clean lines with just the edge you need.
A cool and comfortable interior, reminiscent of a proper Yorkshire pub but with a polished feel.
Owner Sally Hindle opened her first store in Peckham, south east London nearly five years ago. She is proud of the look that BIAS has curated, mixing a range of Danish, Swedish, Italian and French labels. Sally loves the way these clothes look together, layering garments in a way that makes them ageless and timeless. Although BIAS staff range from the early twenties to the late fifties they all look good in the collections.
The Fat Badger has a selection of locally sourced cask ales from breweries such as Black Sheep, Copper Dragon, GreyHawk, Saltaire, Timothy Taylor’s, Wharfe Bank and York Brewery. The perfect destination after an early Friday finish and your ideal location for a beer garden afternoon. Fat Badger succeeds in creating an upmarket feel, but with a homely Yorkshire atmosphere. The Fat Badger is on Cold Bath Rd, Harrogate.
