The Royal Hall Paying tribute to one of Harrogate’s most iconic buildings, The Royal Hall

by Catherine S Wright

10 Community Feature

The Royal Hall in Harrogate is a priceless part of our national heritage and it’s right on our doorstep. Completed in 1903 to the design of Britain’s greatest theatre designer, Frank Matcham, and the architect Robert Beale, it’s the last surviving ‘Kursaal’ in the country. It was renamed the Royal Hall during the First World War to diminish the German connection, although the word Kursaal is still plainly visible in the stonework of the façade. Some may consider the exterior of the building to be quite austere but the interior is a different matter. Referred to as Harrogate’s Glittering Palace, the main auditorium has more gold leaf than the ballroom at Buckingham Palace. The unusual and clever design enabled visitors to stroll around the theatre auditorium and also to enjoy the gardens beyond. It linked the arts and entertainment with the health and spa traditions that were key to the success of the town. The venue hosted entertainment on a large and continuous scale, from performances by Edward Elgar and Anna Pavlova to lectures from Arthur Conan Doyle and Edmund Hillary and concerts by the Beatles and Louis Armstrong. Owing to structural problems the Royal Hall was completely closed to the public in 2001. It remained closed until its reopening in April 2008 following a major £10.8 million restoration project funded by Harrogate Borough Council, the Heritage Lottery Fund and the Royal Hall Restoration Trust.

tours to open the building up to the general public. Increasing in popularity with over 1,800 visitors last year, the open day dates have now been released for 2017. The first four open days are 8 March, 22 March and 13 April, but please check on the website for more information. Why not go along and visit this unique piece of architecture, learn about the spa heritage and listen to interesting facts and stories on the guided tours? Open days and guided tours are FREE but, as they are constantly raising money to maintain and improve the facilities, all donations are gratefully received by the Trust. Tours run twice daily on open days, at 11am and 2.30pm.

The Trust continues its work today to help preserve and promote the building. Over the last two years the Trust, with the help of volunteers, has run regular free open days and

Harrogate Film Festival We talk to Harrogate Film Festival founder Adam Chandler to find out what’s in store at this month’s innagural event by Haigh Simpson 14 Preview Feature

The first ever Harrogate Film Festival comes to town this month, with 16 events taking place over three days across several venues. And this film festival has taken a rather novel approach to making it happen. Rather than seeking funding or sponsorship, the festival has been organised and facilitated by a collective of local businesses. The idea is based on creating a sustainable model whereby the needs of the festival are met by the businesses involved. And vice versa. The idea was the brainchild of Adam Chandler, a self-confessed film buff and director of Reel Film. He said, “I’ve been to various film festivals throughout the region and I could never understand why there wasn’t one in Harrogate.” “So I decided to see if I could make one happen myself, with a very clear idea that I didn’t just want it to be a ‘sit down and watch a film’ festival. Through running my own company I know the power of business and I was keen to make the festival self-sufficient. Most festivals are funded through local authorities or grants. But the problem with funding is that it can always be taken away. So I thought, how can we do this in a way that’s affordable, great for the community and is not going to go down the pan in three years? The idea I came up with was to have an independent business, run by businesses.” Adam has since built a dream team of local businesses who have each brought something different to the table to make the festival possible. Adam’s own company has provided the video production element and in return has become one of the festival’s lead sponsors. This has given them exposure and the opportunity to speak to - and work with - the festival’s other sponsors. Seven of which have subsequently become clients. Other organisations involved with the festival include Everyman Cinemas, Harrogate

Theatres, Raworths Solicitors, Harrogate Film Society, Bee Social Marketing and many more, including our good selves, the Harrogate Review. Adam said, “The idea seems to have worked and we’ve managed to attract around 20 sponsors who are all bringing something to the table, whether it’s a venue, expertise or ticketing systems. Plus we’ve got the security of being self sufficient so hopefully we can continue putting on cracking events.” The festival itself will have three different strands - experience screenings, competitions and workshops. For the experience screenings, horror-comedy fans will be able to experience Shaun Of The Dead in a pub, Revolution de Cuba will host a screening of Scarface and A Night At The Museum will be shown at the Royal Pump Museum. Adam said, “A Night At The Museum is actually being sponsored by Harrogate High School, so we’ve got six students who will be stood completely still as though they are statues until the guests arrive and the door locks. Then they will come to life like they do in the film.” “We’ve already done three warm-up events and they’ve gone down really well. My favourite was when we did Ocean’s Eleven at the Restaurant Bar and Grill, we had roulette tables, cocktails and the full casino experience before the screening, it was great.” Another side to the festival is competitions. Adam said, “We’ve asked independent filmmakers from across the world to submit films from six genres. So far we’ve had 708 submissions from over 56 countries, which is amazing.”

Preview Feature 15

The competition categories are drama, comedy, music, thriller, documentary and romance, with screenings over the Saturday and Sunday at the Everyman Cinemas. Closely followed by a closing ceremony where awards will be handed out to all the winners. Finally there is the educational side, which will aim to inspire young people through workshops on filmmaking and acting. “These will be two-hour sessions with professional equipment and an industry expert helping to pass on valuable tricks of the trade. If someone wants to pick up a camera and make a film they can do that. Same for anyone interested in acting and what to do in front of a camera.” A Q-and-A panel will also give people the opportunity to question four industry experts

on the future of film, which is the overarching theme of the festival. Not a bad lineup for a festival in its first year. And with a solid footing in place, Adam’s ambitions to make it one of the biggest film festivals in the UK - and even Europe - don’t seem so far fetched. The Harrogate Film Festival runs from Friday 3 to Sunday 5 March with tickets and full event listings available at www. harrogatefilm.co.uk.

Airecon 2017 by Mark Cooke

If you ask a board game enthusiast if they enjoy Monopoly or Risk you could well be met with a raised eyebrow. These games are to board gaming what Pong is to video gaming, or wooden racquets to tennis. They were good for their time but have become outdated and board things have moved on. In the last twenty years or so there has been a quiet cardboard revolution. With the advent of games such as Catan, Carcassonne and Ticket To Ride this hobby, around since 3500 BC, has found new life and is growing. It’s estimated that around 1000 new board games are being released each year. Most of them won’t end up in the big high street stores, but the most popular games will sell in the tens of thousands. Board games are great fun, nothing can beat the satisfaction of when that big move pays off, when the strategy you laid out earlier in the game comes to fruition and victory is yours! However the thing that’s most enjoyable about board gaming is sitting down with a bunch of people and sharing a fun experience. Whether it’s long-standing friends or people you’ve just met, board games have a way of bringing people together that immediately gives you all something in common, something to unite over. As the hobby grows, so do opportunities to meet up with other people to play with. Board gaming, after all, generally requires other people to play with. Regular board game nights are springing up all over the place, friendly groups that welcome new and inexperienced players. Larger events and conventions are also on the rise, with the UK’s largest convention, the UK Games Expo, topping 25,000 visitors in 2016. Yorkshire has seen the founding of its own gaming convention in the last few years. AireCon was started in Guiseley, in the Aire valley, in 2015 and is now run by a team of board gaming enthusiasts – Mark, Ben, Rick and Nabil. It started as a gathering of friends

over a weekend in Mark’s house but quickly grew and moved to a larger venue in Bradford for the next couple of events. AireCon became known for being a friendly, welcoming and inclusive convention. Lots of tables to sit down and play games at, a large board gaming library to borrow games from and fun events and competitions as well. AireCon 2 in April 2016 and AireCon 3 in October 2016 were both sell out events and the venue quickly reached capacity, meaning another venue move was needed. After extensive research the Harrogate International Centre was thought to be the ideal location. Capacity for AireCon 4 has been doubled, with an expected attendance of over 1,500 people over three days. There’s seating for nearly 600 people, lots of traders and exhibitors and a dedicated events space that will hold large games, a board game quiz and media panels. IQ Games Centre of Huddersfield has partnered with AireCon to run minitournaments with participation prizes and Imagination Gaming will be running a Family Zone with fun for all the family. Travelling Man, board game retailers based in Leeds, will be providing their huge library of 350 games for attendees to borrow from for free. Attendees can expect a fun-packed weekend with plenty of opportunities to meet up with people and play games. Whether you’re a veteran cube-pusher or a gaming novice you’ll be very welcome at AireCon. AireCon 4 will be held at the Harrogate International Centre, 10-12 March 2017. Dave Randall by Ann Chadwick

Focusing on the theme ‘Daring’, Berwins Salon North welcomes Dave Randall on 27 April. Formerly a guitarist in Faithless, Dave has worked with Sinead O’Connor and Dido to name but a few. His book, Sound System, looks at the power of music as a force for social change.

In your book’s blurb for Sound System it says your insider view of the music industry enables you to ‘shed light on the secrets of celebrity’? Can you tell us a secret or two? Rudimental have a crush on Jeremy Corbyn and Adele’s mum is a hardcore raver.

It’s easy to see how music may have been a force for social change in the 60s and 70s, but in 2017 isn’t music mostly driven by celebrity, consumerism and capitalism? People often look back nostalgically to a period they believe was better than the present. The truth is that the meaning of music has been politically contested ever since the beginnings of class society. People with wealth and power have usually had the upper hand in that contest, be they the emperors of ancient China, the cardinals of the medieval Catholic church or Simon Cowell. But different voices – those setting out the concerns and demands of ordinary people – always find ways of breaking through. Last year the Black Lives Matter campaign inspired Beyoncé. Her song Formation, and in particular her performance of it at the Superbowl, forced a debate about Black Lives Matter into the mainstream media, which in turn helped the campaign to grow. So too will the progressive movements of 2017 find a multitude of musical expressions.

competition. Artists are either jubilant winners or distraught losers. Their fate is nominally in the hands of a voting public – like countries with parliamentary elections, there’s a veneer of democracy. But the parameters of the democratic process who gets selected to take part - are set by an unelected panel of ‘experts’, who also have disproportionate influence over how each act is perceived by viewers. Whoever wins, the same multinational companies profit, since a condition for entering the competition is the signing of an exclusive contract with those companies. So, there’s a fetishisation of competition, a pseudodemocracy, and fixed economic outcomes that profit the already rich and powerful. This is music mirroring much of what’s worst in capitalist society as a whole.

There are plenty of musicians who seem to exploit tax avoidance but do a lot for charity - does it beg the question, is music-inspired charity a ‘band aid’ on deep-set problems rather than offering lasting social change? Right wing politicians and multi-millionaire pop stars such as Bono, Barlow and Sir Bob seem to me to share a belief that society should return to a Victorian model, where poor people can no longer look to a properly-funded welfare state in times of need, but have to rely on charity. I reject that vision. I say pay your taxes. When I played at Live 8 in Edinburgh, I started to respectfully raise these issues with Sir Bob backstage, but thuggish security bundled me away from him before I’d had a satisfactory answer. It’s all in the book!

Is it a worry that celebrity can be a bigger force for social change, than say talent or the music itself ? Talent shows like The Voice, X Factor etc. seem to be just about You’ve played guitar for Sinead O’Connor, chasing fame? who is in the press now more often for her Talent shows are primarily about corporate mental health than music. seems there are so many tragic figures in music, especially around addiction and mental health?

Have you been to Harrogate before? How do you rate Yorkshire’s music scene/ heritage?

The life of a touring musician can be rather precarious and sometimes lonely. You exist in a strange bubble of tour buses, hotel rooms, backstage and VIP areas – away from your usual support networks. To become as famous as Sinead did, at the young age she was, only compounds these challenges. Despite all this she has remained a principled political artist and a huge talent. I admire her and it saddens me that she has not always received the help she needs. But that part of her story is sadly typical. Millions of ordinary people from all walks of life are let down in this way. A decade of government-imposed austerity has only made matters worse.

I love Yorkshire and I’ve had the pleasure of working with some awesome musicians from that great county – recently Leeds’ LSK and Rhianna Kenny. Beautiful place, beautiful people.

Youth Theatre in Harrogate

Hannah Draper is Head of Education at Harrogate Theatre and a board member of the National Association Of Youth Theatres. Here she tells us more about the theatre’s vibrant programme for young people, and reveals some exciting plans for 2017. by Rachel Auty

What does Harrogate Theatre offer young perform in the Studio Theatre each year in performances designed to challenge and people? We offer drama-based workshops for young people aged 3 – 18 years. This is made up of three strands - youth theatre, singing and playwriting. The workshops all take place in our dedicated education space next door to the theatre, Hive. We also have a varied programme of productions to engage young people in theatre.

What’s the aim of the Harrogate Youth workshop series? To offer young people a place to enjoy theatre-based activities in a place where we make and host theatre every day.

How do teaching methods change for each age bracket? We tailor teaching to each age band. Our 3-5s have primarily child-led learning, they have different stories each week and will become different characters. They also might do some art activities – like creating Peter Pan’s shadow. It’s very much focused on enjoying stories and imaginative play and they’re led by a brilliant early-years specialist. As they get older we teach basic theatre skills and develop their teamwork skills through short performances. The 1214s and 15+ are skills-led with themed terms to develop more advanced skills in areas such as physical theatre, immersive theatre and script work.

What makes Harrogate Youth Theatre unique? We’re based at a beautiful 117 yearold theatre and we make the most of that. Each group has an opportunity to

inspire our members. We also have regular opportunities to perform on the main stage and often get a professional actor to take part in that show too so our members have someone to look up to and learn from within the cast. Our senior youth theatre members assist in our younger groups to develop their leadership skills and give our youngest members someone closer to their age to learn from.

What type of things do Youth Theatre members go on to do when they graduate? A whole range of things. Everything from studying performance or working backstage to studying medicine, history or languages. They do everything. We’re not trying to churn out stars, we just want our members to enjoy live performance and take the skills we teach them - public speaking, creative thinking, teamwork, empathy - into their future wherever that takes them.

What’s your fondest memory of Harrogate Youth Theatre? There’s so many! One memory triggers another, it’s like dominoes. Seeing one of our longest-serving members nail an epic sword fight with Tim Stedman in Who Shot The Sheriff on the main stage. A former member of HYT came back to become one of our freelance members of staff. Putting on Wind In The Willows in the Valley Gardens, and it started to rain but all the audience remained still and simply put up their umbrellas, wanting to see the show through. I think one of the best things which will sound odd is when people leave at 18 and it’s a wrench for them to go. They’ve made so many memories and friends over the years that they don’t want to leave. You know how special our programme and our team is

Interview Feature 25

when that happens.

What plans are afoot for 2017? This year we have senior youth theatre members taking part in Harrogate Theatre’s production of Emperor’s New Clothes (see back cover). We’ve got The Wardrobe on March which is about the sanctuary, or otherwise, of a wardrobe to children throughout history. Our younger members have all got productions in the summer term inspired by Kipling’s Just So Stories. There’s also going to be closer links between our associate companies and our youth theatre with more companies visiting and sharing their skills with our members throughout the year. The playwrights will have their scripts performed by our younger members for the first time, which I’m really excited about. We’ll have work written by and performed by young people. It will truly show young people as artists in their own right. Oh, and our

26 Preview Feature

singers will be wowing everyone with their amazing voices too.

What advice would you give to young people wanting a career in the arts today? One - if you can’t imagine being happy doing anything else, then just go for it. You’ll work hard for something you love. And two - join a good youth theatre! You’ll learn so many different skills and meet a whole host of brilliant, creative people you’ll never forget. Harrogate Theatre offers a programme of creative weekly workshops, with Harrogate Youth Theatre sessions for ages 3-18. Find out more at www. harrogatetheatre.co.uk/get-involved

A Quick Chat with

Jonathan Whiting Jono is the man in charge of sales and marketing here at the Harrogate Review magazine. Favourite place to hang around in and around Harrogate? Sadly I’m usually quite busy wandering around doing magaziney things, but I do cherish my time in the wonderful coffee shops. I also love going to Knaresborough because it’s so beautiful.

Local event you could not live without? I haven’t been around long enough to experience many events yet but I’m a bit of a film geek so I’m really looking forward to the Harrogate Film Festival.

Local business you admire? Oh dear I have to be careful here I could get in trouble! I don’t think I could name anyone in particular but I’ve really grown to admire the independent scene in Harrogate.

Local person you admire (past or present)? Sally from Bias on Coldbath Road. She’s a really inspiring, lovely woman.

Name a guilty pleasure I have a crush on my boss.
