The August issue is a busy one! As the summer holiday season is now upon us it’s exciting to see all the upcoming family-friendly and free opportunities, including Knaresborough’s Feva Festival and the Henshaws Urban Beach. I’ve also been finding out more about the legend that is Blind Jack and plans for his tri-centenary celebrations, and Harrogate International Festivals tell us more about their upcoming show, House Of Burlesque. I will be contributing some of my own writing, and including articles from my alter ego Culture HaK – an initiative I cofounded to celebrate the arts and social scene in Harrogate and Knaresborough. I’m also really keen to also work across the community meeting people to hear more about their own work and projects, and if you love writing and have an idea for a feature I’d love to hear it. Thanks for having me back. I’m really looking forward to celebrating Harrogate with you over the coming months.

Prestige and proposals at The Great Yorkshire Show
The 159th Great Yorkshire show took place once again on 11-13 July, attracting 133,542 visitors across the three days, including a record second day. This year in addition to the usual stalls and spectacles, the most prestigious showjumping class in the north - the Ripon Select Foods Cock O’The North - was won by Lancashire’s Nigel Coupe on Golvers Hill. The final day saw Keighley army veteran Luke Davison propose to girlfriend Ashley Addy at the top of the big wheel, as a plane flew over with a banner saying ‘Ashley Addy will you marry me?’ She said yes! After another successful event the show’s director Charles Mills said, “Every year we think it can’t get any better, but every year it does. New attractions and investment in the show site means it evolves every year.” The 160th Great Yorkshire Show will take place Tuesday 10 - Thursday 12 July 2018. John Metcalf Way unveiling
The John Metcalf Way: celebrating 300 years of Blind Jack by Rachel Auty
12 Community Feature
15 August 2017 marks 300 years since the birth of Knaresborough’s legendary Blind Jack – and a specially formed tri-centenary committee have organised a number of special events to mark the occasion. The story of Blind Jack goes something like this - Blind Jack (or John Metcalf) was rendered completely blind by smallpox at the age of six. This did not hinder Metcalf, however, who went on to live a long and full life, becoming a respected musician, horse dealer, military adventurer, smuggler, and the man who shaped the modern motorway system in the north. Metcalf went on to develop some of the region’s most important transport links, building his first section of road in 1752/53 when he was 35. This was between Minskip and Ferrensby - a three mile route between the towns of Knaresborough and Boroughbridge. This pioneer local road builder was the chief engineer on 180 miles of roads in the North of England between 1752-91. Today thousands of people travel on the local roads which were originally built by John Metcalf, such as the road between Knaresborough and Starbeck, built 1753-54. Blind Jack finally retired in 1792 aged 75 and died 18 years later, at the grand old age of 93, leaving four children and 20 grandchildren. He was buried at Spofforth churchyard. Knaresborough already celebrates the legend that is Blind Jack with a life-size statue in the marketplace, a blue plaque at his place of birth, and a traditional hostelry named after him. For the tricentenary there are a number of notable events planned across the town on and around his birthdate.
The celebrations actually began in July with the naming of the road running from A61 Buttersyke Bar to Wetherby Road at Kirkby Overblow as John Metcalf Way. And then there’s the fiddle. As a talented musician, Blind Jack often played his fiddle and entertained in the bars of Harrogate and Knaresborough. His 18th century fiddle has now been found, restored and brought back to the town, and will be the centrepiece of a special concert at Knaresborough’s St John the Baptist Church on Saturday 12 August. John Metcalf - A Man Of Vision will be a musical celebration of the life and times of Blind Jack presented by St John’s Choir and friends.
A summary of Blind Jack tri-centenary events in August: 12 August John Metcalf – A Man of Vision Knaresborough’s St John the Baptist Church 15 August, 12-4pm Blind Jack’s Birthday Festival Henshaws Arts & Crafts Centre 15 August, 2pm Blind Jack of Knaresborough – a talk Knaresborough Castle 15 August, 7.30pm Blind Jack Musical Evening Orb Arts, Knaresborough
Jack’s Fiddle, Knaresborough House
And it doesn’t end there - The Harrogate Bus Company is planning to name one of its buses after him, while Knaresborough’s popular independent brewery Roosters is bringing out a Blind Jack Ale as a quarterly special from July to September. In addition Henshaws Arts & Crafts Centre are hosting Blind Jack’s Birthday Festival on Tuesday 15 August - an afternoon of live music and an exhibition of art by visually impaired artists. Also on 15 August a talk – entitled Blind Jack Of Knaresborough - will take place at Knaresborough Castle as part of the Feva Festival programme, when local historian Brian Forshaw discusses the eventful life of local character Blind Jack on the 300th anniversary of his birth. In the evening Orb Arts will host a Blind Jack Musical Evening. Yorkshire-based singer/songwriters Tim Hunter and Eddie Lawler will perform their interpretation of Blind Jack’s life through original songs. At the gig Tim Hunter will be performing songs from his new album On The Road With Blind Jack.

Bernard Higgins, Knaresborough resident and member of the Blind Jack of Knaresborough Tri-Centenary Committee, hopes that this will all go some way towards helping to ensure John Metcalf is more widely recognised as the quite remarkable man he was, “He’s not forgotten but neither has he been elevated to the position that a person with his courage and perseverance deserves. John Metcalf’s legacy is there for us to see daily. The road networks he originally built helped people, goods and services move around much more quickly, and in a much safer way as the Industrial Revolution developed. “Thomas Telford and John MacAdam were not even born when Jack Metcalf started his road building enterprise. But they are remembered far more. He’s getting due recognition at long last and the local councils deserve enormous praise for their support, help and encouragement.”

town, and what we have is a vibrant festival successfully punching above its weight right on our doorstep. Taking place right at the heart of that often-tricky summer holiday time of year, Feva provides welcome options for those with small humans. As Feva chairman Tony Cerexhe adds, “With so much on during the daytime, including the fantastic free street performances, it’s a great place to provide distraction for the kids. In the evening we have music, plays, talks and performances of all kinds for adults. As usual, Feva offers something for everyone.” This year there’ll be a series of special events held to celebrate the tri-centenary of the birth of Blind Jack Metcalf, one of

Knaresborough’s most famous characters, born on 15 August 1717. “There are concerts and performances in his honour, talks on his life and achievements and a special birthday party for the great man,” says Tony. On 12 August Knaresborough Players are staging the hilarious play Black Comedy, and St John’s Choir will host its annual Feva choral eucharist by performing Mozart’s Coronation Mass in C. Author Jackie Buxton will give a talk about her books at the Library, and Cadenza will perform at the Old School House. The traditional tribute act at the Working Men’s Club will be The Jam’d, demonstrating the brilliance of Paul Weller and others while performing the classics of The Jam. Snake Davis will be at Henshaws,
as will Holy Moly and the Crackers, and the Harrogate Society of Magicians will perform at the Frazer. Pro Musica will perform with the award-winning Cassia String Quartet. On each day there’s free street entertainment provided by Feva stalwarts The Great Mandavi, Uncle Bob, Where is Wendy and Have-a-Go Pirates. Brightening up Feva will be puppets from Frolicked Theatre and the ‘Proper’ Punch and Judy show. The Lions will host their classic annual Beer Festival over the first weekend (11-13 August) and the free Picnic in the Park will be held on Saturday 19 August. An annual festival has been held in the town since 1996 when the first Knaresborough Festival was founded by the late Derrick

van Zelst and his son Robin, and this ran successfully for five years. In 2001 a new group of volunteers came on board and the annual event was renamed Feva. Since then the festival has continued annually come rain or shine and - despite some challenges along the way - Feva has become a cherished local asset and is one the organisers hope will continue for many years to come. Feva’s Director of Music Lucy Barrow says, “Feva is delivered every year by a dedicated committee made up entirely of volunteers and thanks to the amazing support of local individuals and organisations. As a not-for-profit event our aim every year is to operate on a break-even basis, simply so we can afford to put on the festival the following year. We can’t do this without those who buy tickets, those who are our festival Friends,

and those who stick a few quid in our fundraising buckets. “On behalf of the committee I urge anyone who lives in or can get to Knaresborough this August to get involved, support your local arts scene and help us to keep Feva firmly on the map. We have great fun every year and we’d love more people than ever to come and join us - whatever the weather we’ll be there!” Programmes are available in shops and in and around Knaresborough and Harrogate, or from the Knaresborough Tourist Information Centre and Printzone. House of Burlesque After their sell-out show in Harrogate International Festival’s Spiegeltent last year, The House of Burlesque return this September, followed by a Silent Disco in the golden surroundings of the Royal Hall. Tempted? Ann Chadwick speaks to one of the most exciting showgirls in the world, Miss Tempest Rose. by Ann Chadwick
Burlesque sounds kind of risqué for Harrogate audiences. Harrogate is known for its tea rooms and flower beds – should we be scared?
come out smiling and feeling great. After the show they’ll get to take that feeling on to the dance floor for a great party with our Silent Disco.
Not at all! This will be our third visit to Harrogate - we had the most wonderful time on the last two occasions with both shows selling out and great audiences. We are very much looking forward to returning this September with a new show for more fun with you all.
Is the show aimed at female, male, young or old, or is it something for everyone?
It’s an unusual career. How did you get into burlesque? And what kind of training did you do? I discovered burlesque totally by accident when I was asked to audition for the prestigious burlesque cabaret troupe The Kitten Club. I was already a working professional actress trained in classical acting, singing and dance at the time. I was blown away by the intelligence, sensuality, humour and confidence the performers had. Here for the first time was an art form that allowed women to be sexy, powerful, satirical, playful, comedic and intelligent all at the same time. It was totally refreshing coming from the typecast world of traditional theatre. I was accepted into the troupe and after a year quit professional acting to concentrate solely on burlesque. With every House of Burlesque show it’s my ambition to stay true to that first impression I got of burlesque. It seems burlesque is undergoing a bit of a trend at the moment, why do you think that is? Burlesque offers a total refreshing take on mainstream ideas of femininity, sensuality and what it means to be sexy, all wrapped up in a great package of comedy, circus, cabaret and stunning glamour. A House of Burlesque show is bold, entertaining, intelligent and fabulous and our audiences
My shows are designed to appeal to anyone who likes their entertainment smart, funny and sexy. What would you say to encourage those a bit shy to come along and see what it’s all about? Life is all about trying new experiences, in my opinion. If you’ve heard of burlesque and are intrigued to see what it’s all about I promise you won’t find a better introduction to this fabulous art form than the House of Burlesque. We had a wonderful time helping a lady celebrate her 80th birthday at our show in June and she left with a huge smile and her very own pair of nipple tassels as a gift from us. There’s a Silent Disco at the end of your show - is there a top tune you think works best for Burlesque? As burlesque artists we originate our own work choosing each style of act, music and what we want to say to the audience. Finding the right track is integral to a great performance and each piece will be unique to every act. Luckily at the Silent Disco there’ll be three channels of great music to flick between so the audience can be as free as our artists in choosing what makes them feel like stars in that moment. Bistro on the Park
4 Seasons
Bistro on the Park is a contemporary and exciting dining experience, run by Harrogate College’s Catering and Hospitality students, industry expert chefs and tutors.
This month sees Louise and her team celebrating a whole decade of 4 Seasons!
The Bistro has had a successful first year of business, having proved extremely popular with members of the public, staff and students. The spacious Bistro can be transformed into an ambient space, making it the perfect location to hold an event whilst providing food, service and value for money that rivals that of a high street restaurant. Themed evenings and events offer students an outstanding opportunity to gain valuable hands on work experience, at the beginning of their careers in Harrogate’s thriving hospitality industry.
Situated on the vibrant Cold Bath Road, alongside a quirky mix of independent shops, 4 Seasons always has a colourful array of fresh cut flowers and plants to tempt you. There is also a gorgeous range of vases, candles, cards and gifts. Behind the shop front, they are busy creating beautiful wedding flowers throughout the summer months and into the winter, this is where Louise’s passion for all things ‘blooming’ really lies, believing that flowers definitely play a defining and unique role in every wedding.

A Quick Chat with...
Helen Suckling Helen Suckling, is the council’s Tourism Manager. She looks after Tourist Information Centres across the district and works alongside Visit Harrogate. Favourite place to hang out in and around Harrogate?
The Christmas Adventure at Stockeld Park. I’m a huge Christmas fan and loved taking my children to Stockeld over the Christmas Period when they were younger. The Spring and Summer adventures are a great addition to the attraction, but Christmas is still the most magical time for me.
Local event you couldn’t live without?
Wow, so many to choose from. I think it would have to be The Great Yorkshire Show, now in its 159th year - Harrogate simply wouldn’t be the same without it.
Local business you admire?
How Stean Gorge, a spectacular limestone gorge in the heart of Nidderdale. In recent years they have really improved their facilities and captured the outdoor adventure market - and they still have plans for more improvement and expansion.
Local person you admire (past or present)?
Jane Sellars, curator and manager at the Mercer Art Gallery. The quality of the exhibitions she brings to Harrogate is second to none.
