Editors Note Welcome to the October/November issue. It may already look a little different to previous issues. We’ve given the magazine a bit of a shakeup, introducing themed sections and cramming in more content than ever before. We hope the new colourcoded sections will make it easier to digest and much more useful than before.
@FoziaSpeaksOut enjoyed one of the many performances at this year’s Ripon International Festival
In this bumper issue we have a fascinating interview with Bean & Bud owner, Ruth Hampson; there’s a column debut from DJ Trev, a piece about author Dan Brown’s Harrogate visit this autumn, and we find out more about the 2017 Raworths Literature Festival. We also take a look at some of the fabulous comedy coming up in the town as part of the 9th annual Harrogate Comedy Festival. In addition check out the new family, film, music and arts sections, which we’ve packed with reviews, previews and listings. It’s great to see that there’s still so much going on locally at this time of year. Before we know it everything will turn to Christmas. Let’s enjoy autumn while we still can. I hope you enjoy the new look.

The Kung Fu Coffee Master Business
by Georgia Higgins
Ruth Hampson has had quite an amazing life. Seriously ill and hospitalised at 16 while sitting her O Levels, Ruth then went on to be the PA to the Director of Tate Britain, attain a Philosophy degree many years after leaving school and study Kung Fu with Masters in China. Then seven years ago she moved to Harrogate to set up the award-winning coffee shop and tea house Bean & Bud. Ruth spoke to the Harrogate Review about setting up her own business, what’s important to her and life in Harrogate. It is unusual to have a real coffee house that is also a speciality tea house. Tell me about how you learnt your expertise in both tea and coffee. Although a nation of tea drinkers, speciality tea is still far behind coffee in terms of something that people enjoy out of the home. I spent 5 years working directly with both coffee and tea growers and visited tea growers in Kenya. Seeing the tea growing, being picked and processed really confirmed my love of tea. I then experienced the gong fu tea ceremony in a tea house in Fuzhou when I was there to study Kung Fu. All tea originally came from China; there are hundreds of different varietals of tea and we wanted to bring those to a wider audience. Opening Bean & Bud has given me the opportunity to change the tea offering, we also have a custom house blend that was made specially for us by a tea expert and uses all Fairtrade teas. I also competed in the first UK Tea Brewers Cup in 2015 and came 3rd out of 12 competitors.
12
On the coffee side, again working directly with the growers gave me a knowledge of the origins of coffee, and then working with fantastic roasters and developing our craft as professional baristas really helps us to bring out the best of different coffees. At Bean & Bud you focus on ethical sourcing and practices. What do you do? And why is this so important? I firmly believe that all businesses should be as ethical as possible even if not set up specifically as social enterprises. It’s about how you do business. We work only with speciality coffee importers (‘speciality’ relates to the quality score of the beans). We have blackboards up in the shop where we acknowledge the name of the farmer who produced the beans (we change our coffees every 2 weeks). We can always trace where the coffee has come from and ensure that the farmer has been paid a fair price. We use a local organic dairy for our milk and offer dairy free options. For all our other products we use local, ethical suppliers where possible. Our house blend tea is specially blended for us from only Fairtrade teas. We take any food left over at the end of the day to Harrogate Homeless Shelter.
Business
You also champion for gender equality in the industry. Do you think women’s role is improving in the industry? I have had a couple of articles published about gender equality in the speciality coffee industry, focusing on the whole supply chain from women growers to women business owners and baristas. Although the industry is improving there is still a perception of the ‘hipster’ barista being a man, and of course preconceptions still exist around gender in general, where women are not perceived to be in positions of management or have in-depth knowledge of coffee, extraction etc. My focus has always been that as a new industry we should be setting standards, not following them. Here in Yorkshire we are really leading the way with a number of female roasters, Q graders, business owners and highly regarded baristas. Born in Salford, you then spent most of your life in London. Why did you pick Harrogate to move to and what do you like best about the area? When my husband Hayden and I decided to open our own business, we discussed where to do this. We knew we wanted to go somewhere semi-rural, having spent 10 years
on the City of London commute we wanted somewhere quieter! We had both spent childhood holidays around the Dales and loved Yorkshire. We decided that Harrogate was a good-sized town, not too small and not too seasonal with a good year-round footfall. What I like most about Harrogate is how close it is to some stunning countryside and how quickly you can be in wonderful scenery, although since we opened the shop we have far less free time to enjoy it! You wrote a book, ‘Salford to Shanghai’ about your life. Did you enjoy the writing experience? What made you decide to write? I’ve always enjoyed writing and have always been involved in writing blogs, essays and articles. With the book, I felt like I had an interesting story to tell; the subtitle of my book is “an extraordinary ordinary story” – I wanted to show that whoever you are, from whatever background you can achieve anything you want to in terms of where in the world you go, where you work and whatever you want to do in life. There are no limits. Ruth Hampson’s book, ‘Salford to Shanghai: An Extraordinary Ordinary Story’ is available on Amazon both in print and for Kindle.

Trevor in two months of Sundays By DJ Trev
Hello, my name is Trev and I DJ in Harrogate and Manchester (that is, until someone in charge realises). I also got to play play lots of the lovely local festivals we’ve had locally this year – Happygate, FEVA, The StEat Food festival the Tour De Yorkshire, to name the ones that immediately spring to mind without me having to go through my 27,000 facebook “hey guys this weekend….” uncomfortably obviously self promotion posts. I used to try and write articles for Harrogate-News; perhaps you remember skimming through them to see if I remembered to mention your open mic night? I enjoyed that, until they stopped returning my calls, which is the type of behaviour I only really expect from close friends after a night out in Moko where I can’t remember what happened in the end. But I still have words inside me, itching to get out, and, like a literary sneeze, ideally I’d like to get them on paper. I was concerned writing for the Harrogate Review would be too much of a commitment; I mean, somehow managing to fit in 500 words of text, around my three, five hour weekly gigs, and all the background work they entail (what with choosing an awful shirt / tatty waistcoat combo and listening to up to seven new pop songs a week before thinking “No… just…. No” the hours really mount up) so when I heard that The Harrogate Review was going bi-monthly I realised now was my time to shine, like an old pound coin, at the bottom of a urinal. My problem is that I wanted to write an article about dining out every Sunday. The concept is solid: I shake up the traditional Sunday of a semi-successful DJ, and instead of staying in bed until 4pm with a range of semi-attractive ladies, I get up and go out for a Sunday lunch with the lucky winner, my excellent girlfriend. I even had a name for it, Trevor in a Month of Sundays. I know, it’s exceptional. But obviously, that name doesn’t work with a bimonthly publication, and what’s more, at the time of writing, I’ve only actually been out for two Sunday lunches.
The two I’ve managed to go for were both lovely in different ways. I visited the Pine Marten on Otley Road, which offers a fantastic vegetarian nut roast. That was really delicious; I’ve got to say at £12.50 for a vegetarian Sunday lunch I reckon it’s at the top end price wise… that said, it really was delicious, so as an occasional treat is spot on. The second place I visited was Smiths Arms in Beckwithshaw. Their menu is a bit cheaper and has a great range on it; again I opted for the Vegetarian Roast and again it was a tasty affair. The vegetarian roast potatoes are not really what I would call roast, more minted spuds, but at £8.69 it’s hard to find fault, this also gets the thumbs up, perhaps for a more regular afternoon out. So that’s that; one paragraph hardly passes as a full culinary review section. On the other hand, the only other things I have to write about are my life, and no one wants to read about that. If you don’t believe me, follow me on facebook… no one else does. You can hear Dj Trev play old songs every Friday at Revolution de Cuba, and he does a highly inappropriate pub quiz every Sunday at 10 Devonshire Place. If you’d like Dj Trev to review something, please send 3 vintage (pre-1986) Star Wars figurines to The Harrogate Review. Or you can go see him on Saturdays in Manchester, as we get the impression those gigs get a bit lonely for him.

More time at the Bar Please by Rachel Auty
There are some major changes happening with two cherished local drinking establishments. Firstly let’s look at the iconic Blind Jack’s in Knaresborough. Owners Paul and Debbie Holden-Ridgeway held a farewell beer festival in September. After 16 years of holding the reins, the time had come to concentrate on their growing brewing venture, Bad Company. I have always loved this rustic hostelry at the heart of Knaresborough. It’s a stripped back no-music-no-TV-no-fuss traditional-style pub that oozes charm with simply great beer. The only available food currently is a bag of peanuts, and the gents toilets is in a quirky outbuilding over a pathway where a passing horse and cart wouldn’t look out of place. Blind Jack’s has been an important pull to Knaresborough as Harrogate’s thriving independent beer scene continues to gain momentum. The news of Paul and Debbie’s departure made me nervous. Back in 2014 I launched a campaign to save The Yorkshire Lass in Knaresborough. The pub had once been a thriving community venue which had sat derelict since 2007 at the edge of the River Nidd. The owners had applied for planning permission to demolish the building but there were issues. I managed to get it listed as an Asset of Community Value, affording the building an element of protection. The owners appealed, that decision was revoked, and planning permission was granted. The site now houses luxury flats. I still believe this was a loss much more significant to the town than is acknowledged.
18
With Blind Jack’s there’s something equally very special that needs respecting and protecting. It’s not about any one aspect, but the overall identity and everything that contributes to that. The new owners are Christian Ogley and Alice Bennett. They recently moved their award-winning venture, Christian’s from Pannal to Knaresborough where they both grew up. Clearly they have big plans for Blind Jack’s: a Kickstarter page talks of refurbishing toilets, introducing food, and even the addition of an onsite brewery. On the page Christian says “The pub has a charm and magic that we’re keen to preserve, but we feel we can further enhance it and create a space that both we and the local community are proud of.“ This sounds positive. To be in keeping with the uniqueness, it’s important to develop this place unconventionally. The new owners need to think outside the box and I believe that in order to continue the Blind Jack’s legacy they need to absolutely refuse to compromise when it comes to beer. It won’t be an easy project to get right. However, if they manage it then being in the place will feel like being in the company of an old friend in the prime of their life – and that’s very exciting. I believe that Blind Jack’s has the potential to be pivotal in keeping the town’s social scene alive and reigniting Knaresborough’s own quality independent beer scene. In Harrogate, The Empress has also recently changed hands. Simon and Sharon Colgan have The Blues Bar and The World’s End in Knaresborough and are investing £100,000
Food & Drink
in The Empress – a substantial stone-fronted pub nestled right on The Stray. The new owners plan to relaunch as a traditional pub with pub games nights, live music and food. The Sunday carvery at The Empress is widely acclaimed, and this will certainly be something locals will hope to see continue. However, it’s not just the interiors that need attention at The Empress - the beer does too. With 10 Devonshire Place booming just down the road thanks to an outstanding beer offer, the new owners will surely be thinking about how they can dovetail with that reputation and tap in to a piece of that success for themselves.
What is actually missing in the area is a pub with a 10 Devonshire Place standard of beers alongside a quality food menu. Market Town Taverns have tried but The Old Bell (Harrogate town centre) and The Swan (Devonshire Place) have become a little bit ‘safe’ in their offer – in terms of beer, food, and surroundings. The pub that ticks all the boxes simply doesn’t exist locally right now, and both The Empress and Blind Jack’s certainly have the potential to fill that gap.

Dan Brown’s in Town: Author’s Exclusive Visit by Ann Chadwick
Harrogate is to host the exclusive UK launch of Dan Brown’s, new thriller, Origin in what will be the author’s only UK public event. The American thriller writer who shot to global fame with the international hit The Da Vinci Code featuring the Harvard professor Robert Langdon will appear at the Royal Hall on 9 October to launch his new book and discuss his life’s work. Victoria Ibbertson, Literature Festivals Manager at Harrogate International Festivals, said: “We’re really excited to welcome Dan Brown to Harrogate. The fact that he and his publishers, Penguin, have chosen to launch Origin with us is testimony to our Festival’s reputation for positioning Harrogate as one of the country’s leading literary destinations.” Victoria added: “The evening with Dan Brown offers fantastic value as everyone will receive a copy of Dan Brown’s new book in the ticket price. The first 200 bookers are guaranteed a signed copy.” The arts charity delivers two major literary festivals. The Theakston Old Peculier Crime Writing Festival every July, known as the world’s biggest and best celebration of the crime genre, and the acclaimed Raworths Harrogate Literature Festival, picked by Harper’s Bazaar as one of the UK’s Best Literary Festivals. Hosted this October, it welcomes stars from stage, screen, literature and politics, including Victoria Hislop, Joan Bakewell and Dame Jenni Murray. The Festival has hosted a number of exclusive one-off book launches over the years with bestselling authors.

Jo Nesbo, whose adaptation of The Snowman is released in cinemas this October, launched his book Blood on Snow in 2015 in Harrogate. In 2016, it was the turn of one of the biggest names in the genre, Michael Connelly, who launched The Wrong Side of Goodbye. The latest, in May 2017, featured Girl on the Train author Paula Hawkins, who launched her follow-up Into the Water, in Harrogate. However, only a handful have appeared at the Royal Hall: David Suchet in a special celebration of Poirot in 2013; JK Rowling writing as Robert Galbraith in 2014; and this year, Ian Rankin, as he marked 30 years of Inspector Rebus. Victoria said: “Dan Brown is such a global star that the occasion demanded the Royal Hall, and we do expect huge interest from audiences across the UK to catch this rare UK appearance of one of the biggest selling authors of his generation.” Brown’s spellbinding new novel sees the return of Robert Langdon, Harvard professor of symbology and religious iconology, as he arrives at the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao to attend the unveiling of a discovery that “will change the face of science forever”. The evening is blown apart before the discovery

can be revealed. On a trail marked only by enigmatic symbols and elusive modern art, Langdon must uncover the clues that will bring him face-to-face with a world-shaking truth that has remained buried – until now. Dan Brown, who lives in New England, is the bestselling author of Digital Fortress, Deception Point, Angels and Demons, The Da Vinci Code, The Lost Symbol and most recently, Inferno. Three of his Robert Langdon novels have been adapted for the screen by Ron Howard, starring Tom Hanks. Dan Brown, the Royal Hall, 9 October, 7.30pm. On the Literary Case Comedy & Literature
by Ann Chadwick
The Raworths Harrogate Literature Festival has announced a stellar line-up from the worlds of politics, journalism, stage and screen for this October’s event, the seventh in its history. From stories of life, love and loss to debating the issues that shape our political landscape; with tales of inspiration from history to gin tasting and chic lit, it promises to ignite hearts and minds. Food and drink lovers can indulge with actress, EastEnders star and Celebrity Masterchef winner, Lisa Faulkner, who will be talking about her book From Mother to Mother: Recipes from a Family Kitchen. Join the ‘Ginaissance’ with spirits expert, Ian Buxton who promises a gin tasting complete with dry London wit, with 101 Gins to Try Before you Die. If politics rocks your boat, journalists Douglas Murray and Mike Hume take on the future of Europe, and the presenter of Radio 4’s Week in Westminster, Steve Richards, explores the rise of political mavericks from Corbyn to Trump, in The Rise of the Outsiders. The Festival features broadcasting royalty as Baroness Joan Bakewell will discuss her memoir Stop the Clocks and Dame Judi Murray presents A History of Britain in 21 Women. Journalist Martin Sixsmith was portrayed on the big screen by Steve Coogan, in
the achingly touching Philomena, starring Judi Dench. He takes us on another deeply personal and humane journey with Ayesha’s Gift. The story begins with Martin helping a woman from Yorkshire find her father’s killer after his violent death in Pakistan, but ends up as a search for answers to a very different death – his brother’s suicide. Bestselling literary sensation Victoria Hislop shares her love affair with Greece, and chic lit queen Sophie Kinsella talks on her latest hit, My Not So Perfect Life. Gail Honeyman whose debut Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine, which sold for huge sums worldwide, discusses loneliness, hilarity and heartache with author Cathy Rentzenbrink. If you’re enjoying Strictly Come Dancing don’t miss Ann Widdecome. Forthright and intrepid in sequins, and even more formidable in the House of Commons, she’ll be discussing her books including The Dancing Detective, her crime novel inspired by her time on Strictly. For history buffs, Peter Snow puts aside his swingometer to explore War Stories – a remarkable book written with his journalist wife, Ann MacMillan on the bravery of ordinary men and women swept up in the turbulence of war.

Former Loose Women presenter and actress Denise Welch will discuss her warm, funny and honest debut novel, If They Could See Me Now.
Adding dramatic tension to proceedings are three remarkable actors who will share a stage: Hugh Fraser may have worked with Harrison Ford and Clint Eastwood, but his role as the dapper Captain Arthur Hastings, faithful friend to Hercule Poirot, was ideal training for him to turn his own hand at crime writing. Hugh will take the stage to discuss his trilogy of thrillers, Malice, Harm and Threat. George Costigan of Rita, Sue and Bob Too, Shirley Valentine and Calendar Girls fame discusses his debut novel, The Single Soldier. And Emmerdale star Mark Charnock joins them as he’s turned his hand to writing his first novel, Unquiet, for young adults.

Blade Runner 2049
Theatre & Performance
Film
Film Review with Henry Thompson With event screenings like La Boheme (3 Oct.), Loving Vincent (9 Oct) and Coriolanus (11 Oct) running alongside franchise spectacles like the arrival of Blade Runner 2049, October will make for a busy month for culture addicts. Fans of Ridley Scott and the original noir aesthetic of Blade Runner will be in some trepidation as they wait to see how Denis Villeneuve has responded to the challenge of saying something new without losing the mood of the Scott’s 1982 original, or indeed Philip K. Dick’s source novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sleep? Villeneuve’s success with the carefully crafted narrative of Arrival (2016) may bode well for old fans and new converts alike. Hollywood has never been shy about re-releasimg its previous successes and two items seem of particular interest this month. The Coen Brothers first hit - Blood Simple (1984) - gets a director’s cut re-edit and repackaging in 4k. It’s a limited release but worth travelling for. If the plot is straightforward - bar owner hires hitman to kill unfaithful wife- the writing and cinematography combine to produce a taut atmospheric thriller set in a decidedly dystopian Texas. The other retro highlight is a Halloween outing for Stanley Kubrick’s acclaimed The Shining (1980). Jack Nicholson’s performance in this ‘haunted house’ shocker delivers his trademark insanity in a film that did not fare that well at original release but has come to be seen as a masterpiece from one of the UK’s most celebrated directors. The themes of horror, violence and family dysfunction radiate more generally into other releases this month including The Glass Castle, The Snowman, Jigsaw and The Ritual. Of more interest I think is The Merciless, a signature example of the way in which Korean cinema has taken crime drama to a different level, putting Scandi-noir and its derivatives firmly in the shade. Planned for release in October, Studiocanal have still not fixed a date - but keep looking. Directed by Byun Sung-hyun the film reportedly got a 17 minute ovation at Cannes all those movie geeks can’t be wrong! Henry Thompson is a film researcher and author at the University of Manchester. His acclaimed book on American film director Oliver Stone (co-authored with Ian Scott) was released in 2016. harrogatefilmsociety.co.uk

Guy Tortora
28 October, Harrogate Convention Centre
19 November, Blues Bar
South London legends Squeeze visit the Harrogate Convention Centre as part of an extensive run of UK dates, following the success of their North American tour in 2016 and the incredible reception to their latest album Cradle To The Grave. The band are currently working on a new album for 2017.
Born and raised in Pasadena, California, Guy Tortora is now based in London and has spent the past few years touring his Blues/Americana sound around the UK.
The band has long been a captivating live act, and this year gained critical acclaim for their performance on the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury.
He has laid claim to a unique niche on the Blues ‘n’ Roots scene in the UK and Europe, performing in a variety of small clubs, theatres and festivals. Guy is a guitar player of some accomplishment and a distinctive songwriter. On both acoustic and electric guitars he plays finger style, and is a fine bottleneck and slide player. His playing style is understated, and leaves room for the songs to make an impact, whether his own or the covers he performs that include many old standards and traditional tunes as well as songs by more recent American writers such as Eric Bibb or Kreig Viesselman.
As well as a vast catalogue including hits such as Cool For Cats, Up The Junction and Tempted, they also have Cradle To The Grave to draw on, their first collection of new tracks since 1998. This album marked the triumphant reintegration of the masterful songwriting axis of Chris Difford and Glenn Tilbrook, in a beautifully observed series of fond vignettes about childhood, growing up and the absurdities of the ride through life we’re all on.
