Christmas is a busy time for everyone, but I hope that you can find the time to take a breather for a few minutes, sit down with a mince pie and a cup of tea and read about what’s going on in Harrogate. Featured in this December issue is an article that will hopefully encourage the people of Harrogate to further support their local independent businesses at this crucial time in the retail calendar. Even if it’s just a small gift for someone you love, make your choice independent and you know it will be appreciated. Once again I want to encourage people to come forward with articles they’ve written, photographs they’ve taken or an event they’ve attended. If you have something for the magazine, or even just an idea, then please do get in touch. Thank you for reading and have a Harrogate Christmas! Lauren Fitzgerald

Harrogate Film Festival Warm-Up
New indie cafe opens in Harrogate
On 4 December, to mark the 70th anniversary of Agatha Christie’s disappearance, the film version one of her best novels - Murder on the Orient Express - will be screened at The Old Swan Hotel.
Lizzie, a qualified baker, will be working in the kitchen making a range of food and meals for customers, while Sue runs everything at front of house.
As Harrogate’s first Film Festival draws closer, the event organisers are upping the ante with more warm-up events this December to give you a taste of what the Festival is all about.
There is much anticipation and excitement around Harrogate Film Festival as it will be the first event of the kind in the town, going beyond the screen and creating a cinematic experience for its viewers. Many local businesses and independents are jumping on board and will be hosting various film nights during the Festival, which is to run from 3 to 5 March 2017. The Kitchen on Otley Road opened last month to a very warm Harrogate welcome. The cafe is the very definition of a family business, run by mother-anddaughter team Sue and Lizzie Warburton, with grandmother Barbara providing home-made treats.
Along with providing home-made goods, The Kitchen is also committed to supporting other local businesses, sourcing their produce from local suppliers and using Leeds’ own North Star Coffee. £8 million funding bid for Harrogate Theatre
Harrogate Theatre has recently seen a hugely successful run, with high levels of attendance and an array of high profile comedy acts, shows and operas. The theatre aims to improve on the popularity of the last ten years by applying for a £5 - £8 million bid from the Arts Council. At the moment the theatre relies on donations to the Harrogate (White Rose) Theatre Trust from sponsors, trusts, foundations and individual supporters to provide a varied and exciting programme. The money from the bid will go towards transforming the theatre facilities. It’s hoped that by updated and renovating the theatre it will not only sustain the recent surge in popularity, but encourage further growth in attendance. The application for the bid will be submitted to the Arts Council in 2017. It’s the next step in the theatre becoming the cultural hub of Harrogate and will further contribute to the thriving visitor and tourism economy of the town. www.harrogatetheatre.co.uk

Keeping it indie this Christmas Recent years have seen a fantastic rise in the emergence of independent businesses in Harrogate. This is why you should support them this Christmas. by Lauren Fitzgerald
10 Lead Feature
It’s that time of year again when everyone rushes to the high streets to eat, drink, be merry and carefully select gifts for their loved ones. This year we want to highlight the importance and benefits of supporting independent businesses at this busy time in the retail calendar. Despite the growth of local indies, chain domination will always carry a threat for smaller businesses who can’t always compete on price and convenience. But for anyone looking for a more personal experience, independents have so much more to offer. Harrogate has always had a strong independent scene, but there is definitely a sense that it’s on the rise. Christine Geddes from Slingsby’s Cafe on Tower Street says the growth in the independent community is very welcome, “It was much needed in
Harrogate. What we can offer as independents, that thing that the bigger businesses can’t provide, is that personal touch. That’s what the people of Harrogate want.”
Sophie Hartley from Sophie Likes on Beulah Street agrees that an independent will always offer something a chain, by nature, can’t, “By shopping locally customers get much
Very aware of their own status as a local, homegrown business, Slingsby’s go out of their way to set themselves apart from the chains by baking on site using produce sourced from local suppliers. Their dairy farmer, butcher and even their artisan coffee roaster are located in or near Harrogate.
“We don’t buy anything in at all, we bake everything and we designed the building around that. There’s not many places in Harrogate where you can get everything home-baked,” said
Christine. She also stressed the importance of locally-sourced, ethically responsible produce as a way of retaining customers,
friendlier customer service and are actually treated as an individual. Small things such as giving customers a hand carrying shopping to the car, ordering an item in specially, or even offering a glass of mulled wine and a mince pie, all go towards creating a lovely Christmas shopping experience that you won’t get in the bigger organisations.”
said.
For an independent business Christmas is an essential point of the year, and the profits from people buying products from local companies are often instrumental in keeping the businesses running throughout the quieter months. As a business owner Sophie Hartley knows just how far investment from locals can go in a smaller company,
Christmas cheese from the Cheeseboard, your Christmas cards from Magpie Cards and your coffee from Farm Bistro instead of the high street chains can really help in supporting these small businesses that help keep Harrogate extra special.”
“As a gift shop we rely on this time of year as our busiest period, and I think customers know that every penny spent is going towards supporting an independent, even if it’s not the cheapest option.”
“There’s definitely a trend of people being more conscious of where food comes from and that’s having an effect on where they want to eat,” she
Sophie recommends that just changing habits and thinking independent rather than chain will go a long way to support smaller businesses and maintain the charming shops and cafes that make Harrogate such a fantastic place to visit, “Choosing to buy your

here, Harrogate would lose a lot of the charm that makes it such a nice place to visit, especially at Christmas time.”
So this Christmas when you’re rushing from one shop to the next with a seemingly endless list of gifts to purchase for your “We all support each other and we all talk about each other’s businesses to our customers. powerlifting champions
Record-breaking junior powerlifter from Harrogate to represent Britain in European Classic Junior Powerlifting Championships in March 2017 by Lauren Fitzgerald
Luke Richardson and Scott Newbould, both from Harrogate, have known each other since school and have been powerlifting for a little less than a year. Despite their short time training in this sport, they have achieved some incredible feats of strength on the British Powerlifting stage. When I asked the boys what their aims were when they began powerlifting they said that, more than competing, they just wanted to be ‘big and strong’. During the summer both entered their first powerlifting competition, the Yorkshire and North East, in Morley, Leeds. Despite it being their first competition, they were confident going in. Luke says, “I was nervous but I had an idea of
what others in my class were likely to lift and I was confident I could beat them.” Both Scott (20) and Luke (19) are classed as juniors, although they’re judged in separate categories due to their weight difference - Luke is placed in category 120kg-plus whereas Scott is 105kg and under. 14 Lead Feature
In the Yorkshire and North East competition both Scott and Luke qualified for the British Junior Powerlifting Competition in their respective weight categories, giving them the opportunity to potentially represent their country if they were successful. Both lifted outstanding weights for their classes, Luke with a 290.5kg squat, a 167.5kg bench press and a 310kg deadlift, and Scott achieving a 200kg squat, a 127.5 bench press and a 222.5 deadlift. Luke said, “I felt
really good about the lifts I did and it was the next step towards my goal, which is the world championships,” and Scott was so pleased he “cried with happiness!”
Unfortunately, in the run up to the British competition Scott injured his back during training, meaning he couldn’t compete. Despite this setback he is focused on his return to the bar, and has his eyes set on the Yorkshire and North East competition next year, hoping to come back bigger than ever. He said, “First of all it was painful, but
mostly it was frustrating because training for the British competition was going well and I was really making progress. Now I’m just focussing on August and the next Yorkshire and North East competition.”
On 30 October Luke won the 120kg-plus Junior Powerlifting Classics competition in an outstanding fashion. He broke the Junior British Record with a 320.5 squat, lifted a huge 180kg bench and a 330kg deadlift, all of which were personal bests. Overall he achieved a massive 830.5kg total. He says that, despite these very impressive weights, he felt comfortable and could’ve gone heavier both squat and bench, but didn’t want to risk compromising his deadlift.
Luke will now be representing British powerlifting in Denmark on 12 March 2017 in the European Classics Junior Powerlifting competition. He talks about how it feels to be another step closer to his goal of winning the World Championship, “It feels amazing to
see all the hard work pay off. We put in so much, all the food I have to eat, all the sacrifices I make and the time it takes to get these results. To be so close to where I want to be is extremely rewarding.”
After these exceptional performances in competition and some savvy use of social media, Luke is gaining attention from big names in the powerlifting circles, with sponsorship from SBD Apparel who are backing him as one to watch. After a short period of recuperation Luke is focussing on his appearance in the European powerlifting finals. He’s upped his training and plans to get even bigger as, despite breaking world records, he’s still quite light in his weight class. We can only wish him the best of luck and we look forward to seeing this Harrogate athlete break many more records in the years to come. Lead Feature 15

The Boxing Day Tug Of War.
The annual tradition that pits two Knaresborough pubs against each other in a battle of strength and determination. by Lauren Fitzgerald
A tradition that dates back to 1968, the Boxing Day Tug Of War is a huge event in Knaresborough’s social calendar. Drawing in hundreds of local people to line the banks of the river, the event is a resounding success every year. The Tug Of War is a fierce yearly competition between the staff and owners of The Half Moon Inn and Mother Shipton Inn. Each pub has women’s and men’s teams who compete against each other with the aim of pulling the ribbon in the centre of the rope over to the dry land on their respective sides. But this isn’t your average tug of war, the activity is made a whole lot more interesting by the fact that each team is divided by the River Nidd, and losing would mean a very swift plunge into a very icy river! Last year was an interesting competition with the high waters from the heavy rainfall making the stakes even higher and the pull particularly nailbiting. This year there’s hope that the weather is more forgiving but, regardless of the conditions, neither team wants to end up in the water!
18 Event Preview
It’s a tradition that has been going for almost 50 years and will continue long into the future. More than just a part of Knaresborough’s rich history, it’s an excellent way to bring local people together to eat, drink and blow away the cobwebs of Christmas Day. Hundreds of people from Knaresborough and Harrogate come to watch the Tug Of War each year, at Low Bridge at noon, to support their local pub and join in with the festivities. All of the money raised from the event goes to local charity St. Michael’s Hospice, which helps people with terminal illnesses to cope and offers support for their families.

The man behind the pantomime This year is Phil Lowe’s tenth year as director of Harrogate Theatre’s traditional family pantomime. It’s also his eighth year as co-writer. by Rachel Auty
20 Interview Feature
Q. How did your involvement in the Harrogate Pantomime come about? I started as stage manager in 2003 and then became assistant director. I left for a couple of years to work on other projects and then I got a phone call from David Bown asking if I would direct Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs.
Q.When does work begin each year on pantomime and what’s the process? What does your job involve? So... David and I will have conversations about ideas a good 12-15 months before the show. We already know what next year’s production will be and we’re working on ideas for that now. As the director I sit down with the designer in May and go over ideas for the set and costumes and then we would present the model to the theatre around the end of June. I’m constantly in conversations with my musical director from June about songs and lyrics and who is going to sing what during the show. We will then work on the script during the year and I audition the cast for the show in August, apart from Tim Stedman. We just open the box and let him out. On the first day of rehearsal I then have two weeks to work with the company to transfer all the meetings and all the words from the script into two hours of Christmas sparkle.
Q. Ten years of pantomime is a long time. What keeps you coming back to Harrogate? I love panto! My first trip to the theatre was to see pantomime. Every day I try a joke on my family and the team at Harrogate have the same passion.
Q. What does it take to pull together such a big stage production? My dad always told me to surround myself with people who are amazing at their craft and I am so lucky to have a team at Harrogate that does just that. Everyone at Harrogate Theatre understands how much pantomime means to me and the thousands of people that come to see it every year and without their commitment and hard work it just wouldn’t happen.
Q. Tell us about the most memorable moment as a director? I directed a show called Fagin’s Last Hour for Brotherwolf Productions and it toured the UK to amazing reviews but it also received official recognition from the Queen at Buckingham Palace for its part in Dickensian scholarship. The Queen!! Doesn’t get much more memorable than that.
Q. This year’s panto is Dick Whittington. What’s in store for the audience? We have some hilarious jokes! Honestly sidesplitting. My favourite slop scene, lots of pies to fit on Tim’s little face and more sparkle than you can shake a stick at.
Q. Panto season must be a busy time. How do you feel when it ends in January each year? It’s a very mixed emotional time. I’m really sad to see the team go home and the theatre becomes very quiet, but on the other hand David and I start work on the next one and that’s very exciting!! Oh yes it is!!!
Q. Describe your job in three words? Best. Job. Ever.

Gallery to celebrate female artists
Harrogate’s Mercer Art Gallery will be showcasing the work of esteemed artists Liza Dracup and Eileen Cooper this winter . by Diane Saxon
Eileen Cooper (Copywright Independent.co.uk)
24 Event Preview
The Mercer Art Gallery, committed to the promotion, presentation and acquisition of works by women artists, is holding two major exhibitions through December into January, featuring artists Liza Dracup and Eileen Cooper. Eileen Cooper RA, the first woman Keeper of the Royal Academy of Arts in London will feature her exhibition Hide And Seek at The Mercer Art Gallery until 15 January 2017. Whilst Eileen is best known for her richly coloured and expressive paintings and prints, Hide And Seek will present rarelyseen drawings made in a variety of media, including charcoal, pencil, pastel and ink. This is a superb opportunity to view a large selection of poetic, bold and figurative drawings by Eileen spanning almost 40 years of her career. This remarkable body of work illustrates how her distinctive imagery has developed through drawings that explore such subjects as sexuality, birth, family, fecundity and creativity. Organised in collaboration with the Royal Academy of Arts, the exhibition is another major achievement for the Mercer, which has a reputation for promoting the work of female artists. Jane Sellars, curator of the Mercer Art Gallery, said, “I’ve been a supporter of women
artists throughout my career. The Mercer has always had a powerful and diverse representation of women artists in its collection and I have built on that. Last year I wrote a book about our women’s art, which includes Eileen Cooper’s print Learning to Fly, 1989, so I sent her a copy of the book. This got us talking and led to Eileen’s exhibition at the Mercer.” Sometimes described as a magic realist, Eileen brings an unapologetically female perspective to her subject matter. Her concerns are as relevant and timeless as those of the human spirit itself, encompassing sexuality, motherhood, life and death. Her richly diverse images, simultaneously bold and tender, reveal
a range of feeling that is both deeply engrossing and readily accessible, yet still very much part of contemporary art practice. Eileen’s work will feature alongside the photography of Liza Dracup, a British contemporary photographer known for work which captures a magical and often eerie atmosphere, revealing visions unavailable to the eye. For her new series of photographs, Landmarks, which runs until 8 January, she has turned her attention to photographic material in the Harrogate Fine Art collection. Liza was given access to the Mercer Art Gallery’s collection of Victorian photographs and invited to respond to them in her own way. She selected mainly stereoscopic photographs taken within a 35 km radius around Harrogate, often by anonymous photographers, ones which gave her ‘the feeling of the ordinary landscape’. Landmarks features some well-loved and familiar Yorkshire locations - Hackfall Woods, Strid Wood at Bolton Abbey, the spectacular railway bridge crossing the River Nidd at Knaresborough and Ilkley Moor, all seen through Liza’s painterly lens. She often explores aspects of the landscape at different times of the day and night, where the shutter remains open long enough to capture parts of the spectrum that are normally invisible to the eye. It is, she says, an ‘in-between light’ that reveals opposites,
“light and dark, day and night, truth and illusion”. Long exposures, such as her photograph of the railway bridge in Knaresborough, give the effect of layering and the natural side lighting also adds a sense of theatrical drama. Her pictures of Ilkley Moor at night,

where the warming-up sodium street light illuminates the underbranches of a fir tree, picking out each twig in a bright and usually hidden red, reveal patches of colour and light which have a magical quality, allowing you to stumble into a secret place. A stereoscopic archival photograph of a botanical specimen inspired her photographs of individual plants. Liza explains, “I’ve selected and observed the
wider natural world with the plant specimen photographs, as the fern and the elder are all landmarks in the landscape.” Liza, a north of England-based photographer, has developed a national reputation for her photographic practice, being previously nominated for both the Deutsche Börse 26 Lead Feature
Photography Prize 2012 and the Prix Pictet (Earth) Photography Award 2009. The exhibition is accompanied by a beautiful colour catalogue with an essay by art historian Michael Prodger, Senior Research Fellow at the University of Buckingham, who comments, “This exhibition then is not just
about Dracup’s response to the Mercer’s archive but about threads - those that link her own work, past and present, those that link her to previous photographers, those that link her to a place, and above all those that link her – and the viewer – to scenes and subjects that resonate with an indefinable sense of mystery.”
