Editor’s Note December is always the storm before the January calm, I find. I hope if your festive diary is filling up, you manage to save some time aside for bits of rest and recuperation in between.

This issue, being the Dec/ Jan one, is a mixed bag and a challenging balance. Featured within are many festive delights to get you in the swing for Christmas, but also some ideas on how you might reset in the new year – mostly with exercise and beer. Two of my very favourite things! First though we bring you Christmas events in the shape of Glow Winter Illuminations, Knaresborough Christmas Market and Henshaws’ Christmas Concert, to name just a few. Harrogate’s ever-popular familyfriendly pantomime at Harrogate Theatre runs across the whole of December and most of January like a big glittery festive cuddle, so we take a closer look at that inside, too.
Submissions
Looking ahead to January we talk about why it’s important not to forget about our local indies once Christmas is done, particularly our pubs and bars at an often difficult time for the trade. There’s also a feature packed with inspiration if you’re considering making 2019 the year of a fitter you.

“It’s my love letter to Harrogate” By Rachel Auty Jem Henderson is a writer and community manager passionate about tech, digital and creative businesses. Working to build real connections in the local ecosystem, she’s spent the last 18 months building Indieworx Collective, a co-working space and innovation hub in Harrogate.
What is Indieworx Collective? Indieworx Collective is a co-working space on Grove Road in Harrogate. We offer permanent desks and hot-desking for small businesses and freelancers; meeting rooms, as well as events and workshops designed to help businesses grow and thrive. Where did the idea come from? In August 2017 Harrogate Borough Council released their Economic Development Strategy 2017-2024. It laid out a vision for Harrogate and also some of the challenges that we face as a town, including a lack of office space and a highly educated population that gets on the train or in the car and leaves to go work somewhere else every morning. As a passionate hometown girl from Harrogate, I was keen to support the vision for a brighter, more prosperous place to live and work. So the idea started there. There are lots of strands to the planning though, from a conversation on the Indie Biz Collective Facebook group to a chat with a colleague about how to drive innovation here. All this added up to the Collective! Why is co-working important? Co-working is quickly becoming more and more popular around the world. With the move to remote workers and flexible working for businesses, and more and more self-employed people, there’s a real need for somewhere to work that isn’t a noisy coffee shop or a lonely spare bedroom. Coworking offers a place to work but also a chance to network. It’s an opportunity to chat to like-minded people who might be facing some of the same struggles with their business as you, or perhaps a potential new collaboration between your business and somewhere who offers complementary services, like a web designer and a copywriter.
10
Is the co-working space just an office for freelancers, or do you offer more? We’re here for everyone! We’re running workshops for those of you who might have an idea about a new business but aren’t sure where to turn. We’re offering support for creatives and artists who might want help developing their businesses with workshops on business development and building an online presence. We have social events open to everyone who wants to grow their network in the local business community. We’re also communityled so if there’s something you need help with, we’re here to listen and hopefully support, whether with introducing you to a mentor or helping you raise investment or grants. What sort of businesses do you have working at Indieworx currently? We’re a hodgepodge of folks! We’ve got writers, graphic designers, marketers, a couple of fledgling social enterprises, a videographer specialising in healthcare, an accountant, even a gardener who needs somewhere to do his office hours - basically a real mix of people. It’s exactly what I hoped for. By having this mix of people, it allows interesting collaborations to happen. A gardener is going to have a very different view on things to an accountant but they may both be able to help each other, whether through work, contacts or just a new perspective to bounce a business idea around. You’ve achieved so much in such a short time. Who has helped you make this happen? It’s been a lot of work behind the scenes, all while running my copywriting business and managing a toddler! I am really thankful for the support I’ve received from Alistair Forbes and Dan Harper at the Council. Paul Berwin (the solicitor) has been really helpful as I’ve created the business plan. Iain Edwards and Ian Rhodes at the Ad:Venture
Business
programme were essential to getting the whole thing from ‘I want to set up a coworking space’ to actually opening one. What are your thoughts on the independent business community in Harrogate? We’ve got a vibrant indie scene in the town and I am pleased to see that there’s a real appetite for collaboration here. I’d like to see more support for this. Hebden Bridge is a fantastic example of a place that really supports their indies and it’s a vibrant place because of it. We keep seeing large corporates pulling out of the town, whether H&M or Regus who recently evicted 50 businesses from their offices with six days notice. That’s because we’re not a ‘place’ to them, just another line on a spreadsheet. Indie businesses really seem to care about their town and it’s really important that this is supported at a public sector level, not just with words but with actions. Why is Indieworx good for this town? The whole idea of Indieworx is about Harrogate. It is essentially my love letter to the town - I think you’re great and I want to help you do better. I want to help the businesses here by connecting them, translating between them and the council to ensure
that everyone is getting the help they are eligible for. I want to help mums who want to get back to work, young people looking for alternatives to uni and freelancers sick and tired of only talking to themselves for days at a time. If we can empower these people, then Harrogate becomes not just a lovely place to live but a better place to work as well. What is your future vision for Indieworx? I’ve got lots of ideas about what I want from Indieworx. We’ve got plans to open a second floor dedicated to tech startups and innovation. We’re hoping to run a digital festival in the summer to talk about the exciting digital scene we have in Yorkshire. I’d like to start a code club to teach kids the skills they’re going to need for work in the future. I’d like to offer courses in everything from marketing to printmaking. We’ve hit the ground running which is really exciting - long may it continue. I’d like Indieworx to become the heart of the Harrogate business community no matter what sector or size of business. www.indieworxcollective.com

We Three (on) Kings Sometimes a place opens you mean to visit, but it still takes two years to get there. That’s ok, you’re busy, we all are... however, a great deal of the time these days, businesses can’t survive for two years without people checking them, so often times there you’ll be two years on thinking, ‘Ok: impress me’ and they’ve only gone and closed down. And really, you’ve only yourself to blame. Well, you and global capitalism. Fortunately, whilst it did take me over two years to get there, Burgers & More looks set to do more than just survive. I rarely eat burgers; I’ve cut down on red meat and have cut out factory processed meat. Therefore when I have a burger, I don’t take any frozen bought-in nonsense, and it better be good, or expect the severest eye-rolling and muttering under my breath you ever did see. The burgers at Burgers and More do everything you want them to - and, as the name suggests – more! A really superb standard of meat, the patties are paired with everything from the conventional to the downright bizarre - from halloumi to garlic mushrooms, or perhaps a Coca Cola glaze or... jam doughnut? That doesn’t even begin to take in the menu, so allow an extra half hour to make up your mind; there are options here that don’t really make sense but draw you in out of insane curiosity; then of course there are the more straightforward options that have your mouth watering simply by looking at the high standard of local suppliers, the excellent Shalimar and Rasmus to name two.

in to kick start the metabolism. These are cheap, delicious, don’t leak all over the place and set you up for a day at the office. Which is where The Indie Worx collective comes in. Off Kings Road on Grove Road, this shared work hub offers the fastest wi-fi in Harrogate, and also offers great coffee; indeed all the coffee you can drink is included within your daily, weekly of monthly fee. What they provide is something called hot-desking, set up for people who need a professional office space, but don’t either have to money to hire a 40,000 sq. ft. block on the outskirts of Leeds, or think that that might be a bit excessive. Starting at £18 for a day, £99 for two days per week for a month, and £220 for a full time space, it’s affordable and is getting used by business and sales people, local tech start-ups, a host of interesting creative types, community organisations and partially successful DJs.
This is a cracking place, really tied in with the local scene, and with three excellent veggie burger type options, a host of fantastic looking sides, and alternative mains this is for more than just burger fans! The only thing missing for me was a latte, whilst the filter coffee was good, it’s lattes or nowt for me usually... fortunately they are on Kings Road so...
Harrogate is blessed with loads of great areas like Kings Road, in 800 words it’s impossible to even scratch the surface of what’s available, but as towns like ours become less High Street-centric the outlier areas are thriving, so take time to look at what there is available out of the centre - I’m sure you’ll find something you love!
Going further up Kings Road is Little Breads - a small independent coffee house and sandwich bar that nails a good latte. I initially just went there for said frothy beverage, but on a recommendation from a friend tried their veggie-breakfast wrap. I’ve never looked back.
DJ Trev plays most Saturdays at The Foundry Project, whilst if you are at a loose end on Fridays he is at Deansgate Locks in Manchester. His Sunday night quiz at 10 Devonshire Place returns in December, because frankly, November was rubbish. You should probably check facebook.com/djtrev for slightly more detailed details, or you could even listen to him 12.30 – 1.30pm weekdays on 999fm.net
I get one of these a week if and it’s in any way possible I get more; an easy-to-eat wrap of beans, mushrooms, egg and cheese that I’ve now started to put jalapenos
Tryanuary: Supporting local beer Founded in 2015, Tryanuary is a nationwide campaign to encourage support for the beer industry throughout January. The idea of Tryanuary is two-fold. Firstly, it’s to inspire people to seek out and try new beers in January rather than hiding from bars and booze for the whole month. Secondly, it’s to encourage bars, pubs and other venues to organise events to encourage people to do so.
Please consider reducing your increased December consumption back to normal levels rather than choosing to ‘dry out’ completely this January, for the sake of our local pubs. Or, perhaps choosing an alternative dry month would work well instead? After all, January is a superb month to relax and enjoy a great pub. Seasonal drinkers are done and the pub is a perfect haven in which to reset after the Christmas chaos.
Food & Drink
Finding new beers in new places provides crucial revenue to an industry of independent businesses in an historically quiet month for trade. Using the hashtag #Tryanuary the campaign aims to promote conversation about new and interesting beers on social media too.
Here are some ideas on places to go in support of Tryanuary:
The Little Ale House
Blind Jack’s
Bottle & Bean
Harrogate’s cosy micropub on A traditional tavern in market place, Knaresborough. Cheltenham Crescent with an ever-changing choice of well- Honestly one of the cosiest bars around and certainly boasts kept cask and tasty keg beers the finest beer cellar. The everplus great local gins, whiskys changing cask ale here is the and wine. With log burners and plenty of candles, the main best version you’ll get. A great keg and can selection too. room is friendly with a rustic feel.
Cold Bath Brewing Co. One of Harrogate’s newest indie additions taking Kings Road by storm. This is an impressive bar, kitchen and brewhouse selling an all-keg beer range and offering a warehouse-chic interior with plenty of quirky design features.
A little further afield (but only 15 minutes from Harrogate on the direct number 7 bus!), this is an impressive bottle and can shop stocking all the latest releases from the likes of Northern Monk, Verdant, Wylam and many more. There’s also great coffee, usually cracking cake too, and Corner Haus there are always four kegs on Harrogate’s actual newest indie so you can fill up a growler bar, located on the corner of and head home, or stay and Swan Road and bringing a chill with a beer or two. Just try new vibe to the local scene. not to miss the last bus back. This café bar is all about good food and beers, including a tasty Belgian range, with the aim being to bring a bit of northern Europe to North Yorkshire.

Christmas in Harrogate by Kayti Mewis (Harrogate Mumbler)
What better way to get into the Christmas spirit than a good old-fashioned pantomime! Harrogate Theatre’s magical family pantomime this year is Jack and the Beanstalk. This enchanting tale combines spectacular scenery, jokes galore and magic – all of which makes Harrogate Theatre’s pantomime a festive family favourite. Jack and the Beanstalk is running from Wednesday 28 November to Sunday 20 January. RHS Garden Harlow Carr is a must to visit with the family and they’ve got loads going on over the festive season. See the gardens in a different light when you visit from 4.30pm-8pm Thursday to Saturday. You’ll find an illuminated trail around the magnificent trees and shrubs as dusk falls. Glow runs from 22 November to 29 December. Enjoy The Magic of Christmas, which runs from 20 November until Christmas Eve, where you can enjoy a Christmas trail and take part in a range of Christmas Crafts. There’s even the opportunity to meet with Santa, who will be there with the lovely Mrs Claus. Booking online is strongly advised – he’s a busy man and very much in demand at this time of year!
Family
Harrogate is such a lovely place to visit in winter, especially over the Christmas period. So wrap up warm and enjoy our lovely town! Here are some of our favourite family-friendly festive recommendations.
If you were hoping to do some Christmas shopping whilst you’re here then head down to Montpellier Quarter where there are some of Harrogate’s finest independent retailers. If all this shopping makes you hungry there are some fab family friendly places to eat in town – we’d recommend Major Tom’s Social, Starling Independent Bar Café Kitchen and if you’re looking for something to eat on the move we at Mumbler love Thug Sandwich. The best sandwiches in Yorkshire! Knaresborough Christmas Market takes place on Saturday 1 December and Sunday 2 December and the market will offer a full range of regional specialities and locally produced fare from independent stallholders. There’ll also be plenty of entertainment, including Morris dancers, jazz bands and choirs. The weekend finishes with a Firework Finale on Sunday at 4.30pm – we’d recommend watching from Knaresborough’s historic Castle Top for the best views. Whilst in Knaresborough, make sure you leave time to visit the Christmas Tree Festival at St John’s Church down by the train station. Our final recommendation would be to check out Clue HQ Harrogate - a live escape game. It’s for teams of two to six people, so ideal for families. You’re locked in a room and given 60 minutes to find clues and solve puzzles and using the items you find to try to work out a way to escape. It’s really good fun for all the family!

Die Hard
Theatre & Performance Film
Film Review with Henry Thompson Christmas is, in many ways, about ritual and routine – the meal, the family gathering the re-watching of old films. This is, presumably, the kind of studio thinking that has prompted the rerelease in the immediate run up to the holiday of Die Hard (now 30 years old), Home Alone and It’s A Wonderful Life. All three films have Christmas themes which resonate down the years in different ways. The franchises spawned by Die Hard and Home Alone have, of course, become their own special horror shows. There is even the possibility of further torment in the guise of a sixth variant of Die Hard; now rumoured to be in pre-production. It’s A Wonderful Life, directed by Frank Capra, ticks all of the seasonal boxes but it is notable in one other respect. Its release in 1946 came two years before one of Capra’s best and most over-looked films - State Of The Union (1948) - a biting satire about Washington ‘beltway’ politics. Sadly it’s unlikely that you will find State Of the Union on a big screen, but if you’re looking for a stocking-filler that can claim to be an under-recognised classic that also chimes with the zeitgeist then State Of The Union is a very good choice. Robert Redford began his career in television in 1960, appearing in mainstays of the era like Alfred Hitchcock Presents and The Virginian. Teaming up with Paul Newman in Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid (1969) marked an elevation to star status that expanded into directing (for example the Oscar-nominated Quiz Show (1994) and occasional political
18
activism. His latest, and reportedly last outing as an actor in a major production, is in The Old Man and the Gun. Based on actual events, the story is about a Texas bank robber who in the 1960s and 1970s essentially charmed the bank staff he encountered to give him the money. The film has been read as a homage to Redford and his performance would seem to justify that accolade. If all of this feelgood vibe is starting to rankle, where better to turn than Lars von Trier. He returned to Cannes this spring (after his 2011 ban from the festival) with The House that Jack Built – a film that has divided critical assessment but nevertheless generated strong positive audience response. If you love cinema for its capacity to shock and provoke then you will relish this 152 minute story, starring Uma Thurman, about a sadistic serial killer. The film owes something to American Psycho (2000), but generates its own brand of gruesomeness. Rated 18, the story includes one scene with a duck in a pond that you are unlikely to forget quickly. Merry Christmas! Henry Thompson is Research Fellow in film at the University of Manchester. His acclaimed book on American film director Oliver Stone, co-authored with Ian Scott, was released in 2016.

Berwins Salon North 24 January, 7.30pm, The Crown Hotel Join three expert speakers at the Crown Hotel for three inspiring TED-style talks on the Secrets Of Success. Interspersed with intervals allowing time to visit the bar for refreshments and enjoy lively discussion on the topics of the evening – expect the remarkable! Launching into 2019, Berwins Salon North asks our experts, what matters the most?… To Live in Peace (with smart machines) Professor Sir Nigel Shadbolt is the one of Britain’s foremost authorities on artificial intelligence, having specialised in machine intelligence from its emergence as an academic subject in the late 1970s. The University of Oxford Research Fellow, Principal of Jesus College, Oxford and founder of the Open Data Institute (with Tim Berners-Lee), of which he is now Chairman, is at Salon North to give us the peace of mind we’re looking for when it when it comes to our future with artificial intelligence. As smart machines are now shaping our lives and transforming us all, Nigel guides us through a reality in which we can live harmoniously alongside smart machines, the subject of his book The Digital Ape. Friends We all know good friends matter, but did we realise quite how much? Author and journalist Kate Leaver’s book The Friendship Cure – is a rousing, thought-provoking manifesto for reconnecting with your actual friends – and there are incredible reasons to do as she says. Kate’s research explains and documents exactly how much your health, happiness and even sanity could depend on your relationships with your friends. What a great excuse to bring your mates along! Liquids Mark Miodownik MBE will make the surprising case for liquids being one of the things that matter most. The NYT Bestselling author of Stuff Matters, former Head of the Materials Research Group at King’s College London and Faraday Prize winning materials scientist believes a proper grasp of materials science – particularly liquid – might be in all our interests. In fact it might even help us avoid a global human catastrophe, and who are we to argue with a man who Bill Gates described as a great talent. Mark is at Berwins Salon North to present his research into liquids, or as he describes them The Delightful And Dangerous Substances That Flow Through Our Lives.

Harrogate embraces the exotic By Karen Thornton
There’s something a bit exotic about Harrogate. Have you noticed? Something exciting yet welcoming, something that’s more mint tea than Yorkshire tea… Bellydancing has been going on in Harrogate for years. A quiet shimmy of activity that is open to more people than you might think. So what is bellydance anyway? Bellydance is a form of dance with its roots in the MiddleEast. Like so much art and culture, its roots lie in a folkloric tradition which has evolved as people travel and influences come in from elsewhere, resulting in the type of dancing you have probably seen in restaurants or on holiday in places like Turkey or North Africa.
Those folkloric styles danced by men and women in the Middle-East, plus modern bellydance are being taught and performed right here in Harrogate. On Thursday evenings, people head for Harrogate High School’s new dance studio to join international dancer Beverley Smith for classes. Classes run at beginners and intermediate levels.
didn’t believe I could and thought that, at 40, I’d left it too late. Beverley’s patient, friendly and professional approach have not only helped me realise my dream of being able to dance, but have led me to perform as well. It’s been a huge boost to my confidence and dancing with my fellow students every week in class is something I look forward to.”
“It’s a great form of exercise that’s open to all ages, shapes, sizes and fitness levels,” explains Beverley, “Some people come just for the exercise, others because they want to learn about the traditions such as costuming and music, the cultural background. I keep it varied so people are learning all the time but we don’t take ourselves too seriously, we always have a bit of a laugh too.”
Houriat is Harrogate’s very own bellydance troupe, performing at events, parties, shows and festivals all over the country. Locally this has included FEVA, Happygate and Beeston Festival, plus regular theatre shows at Guiseley Theatre every autumn.
Says one of Beverley’s students: “A friendly, welcoming environment for those with a range of abilities to stretch and dance and tone their chuckle muscles.” Bellydance offers a range of benefits, too. It’s a low impact exercise, so it doesn’t work against your body. It helps improve posture, flexibility and muscle tone. Some find it supports weight loss and provides relief from stress. Improved self-confidence is an additional personal benefit, which has led to professional performance for some of Beverley’s students. One of Beverley’s troupe members describes her experience: “I always wanted to be able to dance, but

“Performance is not a requirement for my students, but some are keen to develop their skills and take to the stage. There’s a real buzz to seeing the joy in the faces of your audience,” says Beverley, “Houriat is a small, enthusiastic and very friendly troupe, and once dancers have a bit of experience we’d love to welcome some new members.” Beverley is offering a free taster session on 5 January at Harrogate High School, so you can have a go yourself and see if you fancy signing up for classes. Booking is essential so to enquire or to book performers email Beverley at hazarah@ntlworld.co.uk

Harrogate’s homegrown pantomime Last year Beauty and the Beast was a recordbreaker and the team at Harrogate Theatre are ready to bring another outstanding pantomime to Harrogate. This time it’s Jack And The Beanstalk. Packed with everyone’s favourite pantomime characters, this enchanting and spellbinding tale combines spectacular scenery, jokes galore, magic and sparkle - all of which makes Harrogate Theatre’s pantomime a festive family favourite throughout the region every year. The superb calibre cast for this year includes the inimitable Howard Chadwick back to play Dame Trott. Next up talented Christina Harris is playing Princess Jill and Polly Smith (as seen in the Harrogate Theatre Rep Company back in September) is taking on the double role Fairy of the Forest and Morag the Cook. George Telfer joins us for his very first pantomime in Harrogate playing the double role King Bumble and the baddie Flesh Creep. Now the news everyone is always waiting for panto celebrity Tim Stedman has returned to
the Harrogate stage for this, his 19th year! This year he plays the role of Simon Trott, Jack’s very silly little brother. Finally the fabulous Harriett Hare is Jack, who is a girl in this year’s production. In addition, as well as being understudies this year, Naail Ishaq is the giant and Alice Barrott is Buttercup the cow. Once again this year’s talented dancers come from a range of local dance and secondary schools. Behind the scenes David Bown & Phil Lowe are the scriptwriters and Lowe is also director again this year; Nick Lacey returns as musical director, Sophie Zealand is choreographer and Morgan Brind makes his Harrogate debut as set and costume designer. 2018 marks Lowe’s 12th year as director of panto and 10th year as co-writer with Bown. Jack and the Beanstalk opened on Wednesday 28 November 2018 and runs until 20 January 2019. Book online at www.harrogatetheatre. co.uk or at Box Office on 01423 502116

Getting the Festive Feels with music & more by Andrew Cameron
Well, this is awkward. This Review is the December/January issue, which means we can’t go Full Christmas but we also have to be aware that people reading this in December will want considerable Christmas ‘feels’. To that end, I’m just going to throw caution to the wind and go with some regular, good old-fashioned facts and hope that reality is festive enough. We recommend reading this round-up with some sleigh bells to hand, just in case you’re not getting enough cheer, and maybe a picture of Harrogate’s infamous January back-to-work traffic to hand, just in case you’re feeling too jolly. Sunday evenings are already and will continue to be home to Six Poor Folk’s open mic night, 7pm til late. Run by the charming Mark and Sarah-Louise Boyle, this night showcases some brilliant local musicians in a relaxed, ‘have a go’ kind of atmosphere. The cosy Knaresborough venue will also be running a very special Christmas edition of the open mic night on 23 December, with song requests and an appearance from Santa. Mid-December sees the home stretch towards Christmas, starting with the release of local artist Jonathan Skinner’s second solo single Pathways, to be available on all major digital music platforms. On 9 December, Charm’s 20th Anniversary celebration will take place at The Regency, involving Harrogate greats in a live music, recorded music, poetry, high brow chat and buffet situation. See www.harrogatetheatre. co.uk for the very reasonable £5 tickets. Legendary Harrogate bar The Den will play host to a fantastic selection of live music. Bands play from 9pm every Friday Night, at 9pm every Saturday and acoustic performers play on Saturday afternoons. 2pm every alternate Friday throughout December, with artists like Biz Denton, James Coley and Robbie Miller taking us up to the Big Day. Marc and Abi from Issimo

Music, and Rob Reynolds from being actual Rob Reynolds will take the reins for the Friday 28 and Saturday 29 performances between Christmas and New Year. It goes without saying, but also check out another of Harrogate’s favourite live music venues, The Blues Bar, for their busy line-up of cracking musicians over the coming weeks. They also hold jam nights every Monday and acoustic nights every Tuesday - both well worth a look for music fans... check their website before visiting as gig start times vary due to sporting fixtures. It’s not just music and spoken word either - if craft is your thing Henshaws Arts & Crafts Centre are running various Sunday workshops for candle-making, wreath-making and other joyful art projects. In terms of local theatre and performance R M Lloyd Parry will be offering up Winter Ghost Stories - Oh Whistle on 15 December in Harrogate Theatre’s studio theatre for a spooky yuletide delight, although given the demand it is entirely possible to be sold out by the time you read this. Sorry about that. However the classic Harrogate panto - Jack & the Beanstalk this year - will continue running deep into January, so there’s still time to grab some seats at that. If you’re looking for some quiet down time to break up your busy diary why not visit one (or more) of Harrogate’s excellent choice of public houses and have a natter over a few pints of local ale. The perfect downtime tonic to a hectic festive period.

Free Tickets for Young Audiences to Discover World-Class Music Harrogate International Festivals is offering young people free tickets to experience worldclass live concerts. The Library Of Live free membership scheme is open to young people aged 7 to 25. It entitles members to free tickets for selected events across the year-round programme of festivals.
Snake Davis
Louis Schwizgebel
Tickets are now available for the Sunday Series. Now in its 26th year, the series has an astounding legacy for bringing the finest classical musical talent from around the world to Harrogate. Charlotte Woods, Music & Education Manager at Harrogate International Festivals, said, “We want to encourage young audiences to open up their hearts to classical music. There are misconceptions around classical music being for older people. Many great composers were the rock stars of their day, and the majority of classical musicians are young themselves, falling in love with music in childhood.” Opening the series is the internationally renowned pianist Louis Schwizgebel, playing Schubert and Chopin. Born in Geneva in 1987, Swiss-Chinese pianist Louis Schwizgebel has been described as an ‘insightful musician’ by the New York Times. The young artist is praised as a genuine virtuoso, ‘a spirited young genius with real depth’. February features the youngest-ever winner of the BBC Young Musician Competition, trombonist Peter Moore. Peter released his first CD to critical acclaim in 2018 and is joined on stage by fellow Young Classical Artists Trust musician James Baillieu, who was described by The Daily Telegraph as ‘in a class of his own’. Later in the month the charismatic Ruisi Quartet take to the stage. Winners of the Royal Philharmonic Society award for Young British String Players, the Ruisi Quartet has established a reputation as a charismatic and expressive
ensemble. They’ll perform Purcell, Stravinsky and Mendelssohn. March sees the powerhouse duo of violinist Jennifer Pike, performing with one of the UK’s best loved pianists Martin Roscoe. After winning both the BBC Young Musician of the Year Competition and Menuhin International Violin Competition in 2002, Jennifer Pike is one of today’s most exciting instrumentalists. Bringing the series to a close in April is charismatic pianist Yevgeny Sudbin, hailed by The Telegraph as ‘one of the greatest pianists of the 21st century’. Charlotte added, “You don’t need any knowhow or experience. It’s proven that classical music has an amazing effect on our brains, literally turning grey matter blue, indicating deep emotion. Young people will naturally connect to that depth of feeling and passion. We hope younger audiences will try it out and see for themselves. Live concerts can be truly transformative.” All concerts will be performed on Sundays at 11am at the Old Swan Hotel in Harrogate.
