In the news Funding boost for Bradford Live Bradford Live have received a boost for their attempt to bring the Odeon building back into use. The group have received funding from the West Yorkshire Combined Authority which has enabled engineering work to begin on the careful strip-out of the old cinemas. They were inserted in 1968 and are made up of steel and concrete structures bolted onto the frame of the 1930s building. The work will attempt to remove these structures without damaging the fabric of the building. The Bradford Live team also hope to use timelapse photography to record the strip-out work, showing the dramatic space open up for the first time in almost 50 years. Bradford Live director Lee Craven said, “Enabling people to see this overwhelming space for the first time in nearly 50 years will help us secure the additional funding we need to bring the project to fruition.

Bradford celebrates National Poetry Day

City unites for world record attempt

Bradford Libraries are teaming up with Bradford City Of Film to make a film for National Poetry Day. The film will celebrate poetry and will feature people of Bradford reading poems – either one they’ve written themselves or their favourite poem by another poet. Anyone can be in the film and we have people of all ages reading poems in different languages.

Bradford is attempting to get its name in the world record books, connecting the people of the city in a celebration of the friendly, diverse and extraordinary culture of the Bradford District.

The film will feature each person reading a section of a larger poem or all of a short poem. Filming will take place in City Hall on 12 September and participants will be encouraged to dress up and bring props. Steve O’Connor, a performance poet and tutor of Bradford Libraries Creative Writing Course, will be on hand to offer performance advice to those who need it. The film will be shown on the big screen in City Park on National Poetry Day and online.

On Thursday 15th of September between 11:30 – 2:30 City Park will play host to the Love Bradford world record attempt. The aim is to create the ‘longest chain of people making heart-shaped hand gestures’. Bradford Council are inviting school children, local businesses, organisations and people across the district to join them in this attempt. At least 2,000 people are expected on the day, which promises to be a visual treat as well as great fun and an uplifting experience for all involved. These numbers should ensure that the current record of 1,936 people, achieved by Tokyo Steel Products Dealers Association in Japan, is beaten.

SATURDAY 17 SEPTEMBER PLAYHOUSE BRADFORD

The Northern School By Mick Martin

The Northern School is a fully immersive theatrical event with film and a live 50s rock n roll band, taking place through the whole of Bradford Playhouse from 4th – 8th October. It’s the fifth production from Bent Architect, a Bradford-based, Arts Councilfunded, theatre company led by myself, Mick Martin, and Jude Wright. We aim to bring the Playhouse back to life as it was during the heady heyday of The Northern School of Acting, to recreate the zest and excitement of a new young generation of working class kids who dreamed of changing the world they lived in. It was whilst researching something else entirely that I accidentally stumbled across the name Esme Church and first heard of The Northern School of Acting, which ran at Bradford Civic Playhouse from 1945 to the start of the 1960s. I read on and discovered a whole fascinating yet largely forgotten cache of my home city’s creative history that I never knew existed. It turns out Esme was a well known West End face in her time, who’d worked with them all - Olivier, Gielgud you name ‘em. She was part of the group that took the Old Vic Theatre to Burnley to escape the bombing during the war. Needless to say, the second peace came the theatre folks decamped en masse back to Shaftesbury Avenue, except for Esme, who stayed north. To her friends bemusement, nay, outright horror, she took the job of Director of the amateur Bradford Civic Playhouse. Once there she wasted no time in setting up The Northern School of Acting, offering young hopefuls from this neck of the woods the chance to get a proper drama school training, comparable to anything in London.

Classes ran in the evenings, students had to audition to get in and pay their weekly subs. Esme taught them how to think, walk, smoke a fag and above all talk like real actors, and that meant losing their deep ingrained flat Bratfud vowels and glottal stops! Through the school went people like Billie Whitelaw, who went on to be Samuel Beckett’s muse. Others included Tom Bell, Edward Petherbridge and Dorothy Heathcote, who would become one of the original driving forces behind the whole Theatre In Education movement. Esme wanted the very best and would settle for nothing less, and she wanted it in Bradford! The more we read about the school and just how groundbreaking and visionary Esme’s ambition was, the more we were inspired by her. And the more we wanted to do a project about it. Bradford of the 1950s was very different to the multicultural, multi-lingual, omni-shambolic yet buzzing, busy, dirt poor and rough-as-adogs-arse one that we know and love today. It was a time when the first teenagers threw off the shackles of the war years and let rip to the sounds of rock ‘n’ roll. They had a bit of money in their pockets and they wanted more than their parents had known. They were growing up in a city that had confidence, jobs, money, new houses going up everywhere as the back-to-backs came down and the city centre was ripped apart in what passed for progress but turned out to be just a lot of concrete. As the 50s wore on the new voices of the angry young men got louder and by 1960 the British New Wave of cinema - aka the kitchen sink era - was about to flower, with films like Billy Liar, Saturday Night and Sunday Morning and This Sporting

Life. Coronation Street was just round the corner and The Beatles were tuning up in Liverpool. A confident, youthful, humorous yet passionate northern voice was finally about to get onstage and in front of a camera!

the bar will be open throughout and you’ll be able to buy tea and coffee in the jazz café we set up. The audience will be able to explore the building, backstage and front, discovering scenes and characters along the way.

The germs of a play began to form. Esme’s generation was all about the London stage, the actor as a thing of beauty, vocally perfect, who must look and sound like Gielgud and Olivier. But in the north change was brewing, young people were starting to want to look and sound like themselves! From this premise our project, The Northern School, began to take shape. It’s the passing of a baton from one generation to another. But without Esme they would never have had the chance at all.

Above all we want the project to mirror what Esme was trying to do, to open doors, give young people from Bradford and district the chance to work alongside professional actors and creatives. We want them to feel and believe that the theatre is a world they can be part of, that Bradford is a city they can be proud of, where good things have happened and will now - if we make them. Jude and I are passionate about this city and we just hope we’ve done justice to it, Esme, and The Northern School.

Esme was an innovator in her own time and we felt that our piece should honour that by being as modern in form and style as we could make it. So it’s more an event than a play -

The Northern School will be taking place through the whole of Bradford Playhouse from 4th – 8th October.

Shipley-born DJ and promoter Lubi Jovanovic - aka DJ Lubi - is bringing international jazz star Terence Blanchard back to Bradford with the help of an Arts Council-funded scheme designed to re-establish jazz in the city. The acclaimed jazz trumpeter will perform with a 12-piece ensemble of young Northern jazz musicians at the Bradford Playhouse on Saturday 17 September. Although there’s still a small scene in Bradford today, the city once drew high profile international stars to West Yorkshire to meet and perform. In the 1980s Bradford played host to the International Jazz Festival, attracting attention and talented musicians from all over the world to celebrate a vibrant music background. Funded by Bradford Council, Yorkshire Arts and the Arts Council Of England the Festival was an international success and a huge event in the city. The driving force behind the Bradford International Jazz Festival was the Jazz Development Officer, who worked for Yorkshire Arts and was funded by the Arts Council of England. At the time of the International Jazz Festival this was Geoff Amos, who played an essential part in bringing international artists and big promoters to Bradford. Lubi remembers working at the Bradford International Festival in 1983, and the popularity of the event, along with the variety of music and vibrance it brought to the city. “All the events that year sold out. The programming was amazing. Geoff Amos really went to town on the definition of what jazz was at the time, including free jazz, African jazz, Latin jazz/salsa, Brazilian jazz, gospel, Caribbean jazz and soul/ funk.” Despite the popularity of the festival, the poor state of the economy in the 1980s ultimately meant that the funding that went into the development of jazz in Bradford had to be cut. Slashes on public spending for both the arts and the local government meant that by 1985 the funding was gone. Although the new Bradford Festival, introduced in 1988, did maintain a healthy programme of international jazz for the next decade, the loss of essential funding meant that the post of Jazz Development Officer disappeared and other major players, including Lubi himself, left Bradford to work and promote in other cities such as Leeds and Manchester. By bringing Terence Blanchard, an internationally respected jazz trumpeter, to Bradford Lubi hopes to attract some of the same attention and repeat the success of the International Jazz Festival, “We just don’t have the big high profile international artists coming in like Terence Blanchard. That’s why this concert is quite important for the

DJ Lubi is hoping to recreate the thriving Bradford jazz scene of the 1980s

local jazz scene, a test to see if there’s an audience here for such concerts and artists.” Terrence, originally from New Orleans, took up the trumpet at eight and by the age of 20 he had become a member of legendary jazz drummer Art Blakey’s band. This was Terence’s big breakthrough and it was during this period that he would perform at the Bradford International Jazz Festival as part of Blakey’s band in 1983. Terence Blanchard finally went solo in 1990 and released his debut album on Columbia Records. Since then he has travelled many paths musically, including delivering adventurous and provocative acoustic jazz outings of original material, and composing over 50 soundtracks as part of a second successful career as a film music composer. He continues to record and release contemporary jazz albums each year and performs live with his various ensembles at jazz festivals and clubs around the world. It’s fitting that Terence should be brought back to Bradford by Lubi, as the two met

more than 30 years ago at Bradford’s International Jazz Festival in 1983 when they were both 21 years old and just starting their careers in music. Lubi remembers when they met, “That was a memorable night. Local musicians and members of the Jazz Messengers jamming onstage until the early hours of the morning. It felt more like a night in New York than Bradford as we rolled out into the dawn streets.” He added, “Hopefully this ACE-funded series of gigs can bring the big international jazz artists back to the city on a regular basis. If that might then inspire a local young person who plays an instrument to take it to the next level, maybe go to study music at college and make a career in jazz, then we’ll have been successful. For now, let’s hope the first concert sells out and is a springboard to even greater things to come. If that happens then maybe there might be scope for a new Bradford International Jazz Festival sometime in the future. Now that would be something to smile about.”

North Parade

Street Party

A fantastic showcase of food, drink, music and culture from Bradford’s independent heartland By Phil Lickley

North Parade was abuzz with thousands of people from the city and further afield for its third annual street party, which saw all the businesses throw open their doors and stretch out into pavement cafes to entertain visitors with drink, food, live music and fairground rides. Under bright skies the closed-off street was packed, from the huge stage at one end through the multiple stalls, stands, food outlets and outdoor bars to the busker’s tent at the other end, which saw numerous acts performing during the day. With venues such as the Sparrow, Al’s Dime Bar, Peacock Bar, the Record Café, Beer House, Plonk and the new Rum-shack-alack taking part, it was a great celebration of independent businesses from the shopping area that appeared as a finalist in last year’s Great British High Street Awards. Complementing the drink, for those hungry during the party, there was everything from pie and peas to Caribbean cuisine, pork-filled baguettes to rustic pizzas made fresh in a converted horse-box. Alongside the packed food and drink outlets those there got treated to five huge acts on the main stage, beginning with the catchy blues numbers of Atlanta’s Doug Nissley. Other acts on the day included the funky Howlin’ Ric and the Rocketeers, Sleepy Jake and the Duvets, and an acoustic set from two members of local band Issimo, who delivered the goods with their high-energy versions of covers alongside original tracks like Carpe Diem and Pretty Simple from their upcoming new EP. The main stage was wrapped up with the rock and energy of Foxes Faux who delivered some early-evening volume to the street.

Also performing during the day were a range of unplugged buskers, including the welcome return of Dave Hanson to the city. The volume was raised during the afternoon at this end of the party as the Bare Brass Band paraded through the crowds and gave a lengthy hour-long performance to a huge audience. They weren’t the only moveable acts present, as two drummers from the Peacock Bar also got into the spirit and at one point even accompanied an act on the busking stage, adding drums to his electric guitar. The street party became awash with colour during the day thanks to Forks who were handing out Hawaiian leis to the crowd, whilst there was fun for all the family with three fairground rides, ice-creams and the chance for a selfie not only with Bradford City’s Billy Bantam but with the dragon from North Parade’s Singkee Chinese Supermarket. With laid-back reggae-infused tracks played out from the Rum Bar between acts, the smell of delicious food drifting across the street, and a genuinely packed-out North Parade full of people - not only returning after enjoying the previous two year’s events but many discovering it for the first time - the street party was an incredible celebration of everything that makes Bradford great, from its independent businesses to its diverse cultures of music and food, to the community spirit of all gathering in the area for a massive thumbs up to everything going on. Everyone we spoke to during the day had nothing but positive things to say about the party, and everyone young and old either went away from the event with a smile on their face or stayed after the main day’s events to continue celebrating the city and its businesses well into the Saturday night.

Mind the Gap presents...

Mia

Bradford-based theatre company Mind the Gap is premiering the company’s new touring production Mia at their MTG Studios home base later this month. The hour-long show is fast-moving, raw and eye-opening and explores the truths and myths about learning disability and parenthood in today’s society. Think pop culture with popcorn, science with silliness, stories with statistics. Mia challenges the often-taken-for-granted idea of being a parent. There’ll also be a 20-minute postshow discussion after each performance. Created and directed by Mind the Gap’s resident director Joyce Nga Yu Lee and performed by four learning-disabled artists, the national tour of Mia will kick off with three performances at MTG Studios on 27 and 28 September. It will then head to Harlow Playhouse, New Wolsey Theatre in Ipswich, The Lowry in Salford and the Arena Theatre, Wolverhampton.

Mia is part of a much wider project, Daughters Of Fortune, exploring learning disability and parenthood. It’s a project about humanity, of human experience. It aims to resonate with everybody with and without a disability. The issue of learning disability and parenthood is complex, but thanks to a £40,000 grant from the Wellcome Trust Mind the Gap will work with medical experts, geneticists, social workers, council officers and advocates, as well as an independent researcher, to ensure the project and its associated performance outputs are factually correct. Alongside Mia, Mind the Gap is also touring its sister piece Anna - an interactive Forum Theatre performance exploring scenarios that may be experienced by learning-disabled people when they consider being, or become, a parent. The company is also working on a site-sensitive, large-scale outdoor spectacle called Zara, which they plan to launch in 2018. Mia will appear at MTG Studios, Lister Mills, Bradford on 27 September at 7:30pm, and 28

Norman Records Presents: Mohammad / Sophie Cooper / Dundas 8pm, Fuse Art Space, Bradford, BD1 3QQ Greek chamber-doom duo Mohammad came to prominence in the extended experimental network through their record trilogy for Antifrost, in which they used their custom-made cello drone to express a ‘geographical survey’ of their bearings. Local Todmorden musician Sophie Cooper’s sounds are informed by both noise-making and songwriting, foggy drone and the sounds that punctuate it dangling meandering guitar abstractions off the edge of the earth. Support from Dundas’ electronics swaying between ambience and techno; could be minimal, could be chaos. £7.50 wearefuse.co
