After making its debut splash in 2015 the Dragonboat Festival goes from strength to strength, and is back again for another exciting fun-packed showing on Saturday 6 May 2017, at Roberts Park, Saltaire. And there’s plenty of room for everyone to get on board! The 2015 Festival was interesting for many reasons - with so many twists and turns it could have been a great film plot. It was all set against a backdrop of drought, with river levels dropping daily and organisers concerned the water would be too shallow. They needn’t have worried - Mother Nature sent 10 hours of major rain overnight, swelling the River Aire and testing all contingency plans to the maximum. Some thought it would be called off, yet the volunteers rallied together - along with the 23 teams, the traders, the acts and performers, plus the spectators - and everyone had a lot of fun messing about in boats. Even the odd capsize or two didn’t dampen the spirits. Even the sun came out to join in and everyone went home happy with memorable experiences. The festival was a huge success, both in the money raised for the Lord Mayor’s Charity and in what it achieved. It’s worth pointing out that the 2015 Festival was designed, planned and delivered in an unbelievable five-month time frame. The 2016 Festival saw snow fall in Bradford that week. It was the first week in May and felt more like January. The boats were coming across from Liverpool via the Leeds-Liverpool Canal with one of the organisers and two of the teams (Great Sight and Providucks) in a never-beendone-before Trans-Pennine Challenge. Back in Bradford everyone was growing anxious. 45 teams had signed up and there was no word on the boats. Communications were irregular and the mood was tense. The boats had to be in Saltaire for the Friday night before the event. The deadline came and each passing minute anxiety grew. No word, but then in the distance came a steady

noise. Quietly at first, but steadily growing… it was the drums on the boats, and as they came into sight the paddlers started up the tune to Captain Pugwash. The whole sight and sound made no sense, but everyone went delirious with joy. The boats were here and had traversed some 90-odd miles of canal, locks, swing bridges and other challenges. Paddlers talked of the arduous journey and the amazing things you can find in a canal - shopping trolley - check, bin check, footballs -check, Noah’s Ark - check, hoverboard - check! Boats lifted off the canal and ready, and the Festival site was built. The following day saw 900 participants turn up for 45 teams, plus countless acts and performers ready to play the Pulse stage, the bandstand, and roam amongst the crowds. There were stalls, workshops and other attractions, children’s rides, big screen, bars, food vendors and even Nuffield Health staff doing warm-ups and massages for the participants. Oh, and a game of cricket taking place, as local club Saltaire CC did battle that day. The festival raised around £44,000 for the Lord Mayor’s charity and well over 10,000 people came to spectate. However none of this would have been possible without the army of volunteers who came to assist, nearly 100 in total. They did everything from bucket collections, working the Lord Mayor’s Stall, helping with the boats, cleaning up the site, joining in the fun and ensuring the car parks kept moving. They did all the event management on the day and cleared up at the end. In fact the story of this huge success is all about the volunteers and what they do to make this event a reality. Each year more

join the cause. Each year these people bring passion and pride to staging an event Bradford can really be proud of. The festival is truly a community festival, made by the community, for the community, raising funds for the community and allowing local acts and performers from the community to come along and entertain everyone in a freeto-attend event. In fact every aspect from design to delivery to after-event procedure is carried out by volunteers from all walks of life. Individuals who give up their spare time to show the rest of the UK how fantastic the people of Bradford and its surrounding districts are. Team Bradford, working in unity, showing true Yorkshire Pride. The 2016 Festival was so good, it didn’t go unnoticed. Praise came in, and not just from Bradford but from all over the UK. It’s been recognised as the biggest festival of its type in the UK. It saw a nomination and a top five placing for the Yorkshire Gig Award - not bad for a festival centred around Dragonboats. Come March 2017 and yet another nomination, this time for an award with Yorkshire Sport…. So how do the organisers 10 Preview Feature

plan to upstage what they’ve done in the last two years? Go bigger is their aim - do things that haven’t been done before. What, you may ask? How about three days!? To do this the ranks of the volunteers need to swell. More are needed for the three days. 150 is the aim for the Saturday alone, the centrepiece day. As always the organisers are working closely with the district’s businesses and organisations to see what can be done, working together and contributing to put on a show the entire UK will take notice of. This year the organisers’ ranks are also set to swell, with more of Bradford Council’s employees giving up their spare time and expertise to do what is necessary to make everything become reality and allow more of us an opportunity to be involved - and not just Bradford Council, but lots of organisations and associations from across the Bradford District.

Room at the Top Salts Mill gears up for a busy summer of events, some key anniversaries and some important restoration work. by Eddie Lawler

More thrills at Salt’s Mill! The Early Music Centre offers occasional concert performances there, and the quartet Red Priest saw February out, filling Gallery 3 for a scintillating exploration of 18th century classical music adapted with a gypsy slant. A genuine celebration of virtuosity, both of composer and of musician.. And there’s plenty more to celebrate in 2017, notably three big birthdays. Poet Tony Harrison and artist David Hockney both turn 80 this year, both have been inspired by the Mill, and in turn have inspired its visitors over the 30 years since its reincarnation as a hub of artistic excellence. Harrison, who launched two plays, Trackers Of Oxyrhynchus and Poetry Or Bust, in the Mill and gave readings of his poetry, has his birthday on Sunday 30 April. He has graciously accepted an invitation to share it with Saltaire. Tickets go on sale shortly for a live reading on the day itself, at 7pm with wine and nibbles at £10. The Mill’s lower galleries will evolve from mid-June in anticipation of Hockney’s 80th on 9 July, to include work from the Archive and more Hockney in Gallery 2. In planning is a whole weekend of fun and celebration for one and all – including tours led by knowledgeable staff, talks and children’s activities. The Arrival Of Spring remains on the 3rd floor with possible additional

activities such as film. The third magic number is the abovementioned 30 – it’s 30 years since the Silver family began to breathe new life into Salt’s Mill, and an autumn celebration is promised in the form of a ‘completely different’ show in Gallery 2, by a female artist new to Saltaire, including a specially commissioned work. This will run from October half-term into November and the 30th anniversary of the opening of the 1853 Gallery. At the far end of the top floor you may have visited the relatively new permanent exhibition reflecting the changing life of the Mill, People And Process. Curators June Hill and Jen Hallam continue to develop this section, and are adding items from the Mill’s archive. But if you look again at Caren Garfen’s fascinating bobbin-memorial to the women of Saltaire, you’ll see a door next to it. You can’t be Alice In Wonderland and go through it. Not yet.

But what lies through there is another floor, directly above Gallery 2, the retail area and the Antiques Centre. The top floor. And here something’s really afoot, as you may have noticed from the yard outside. The roof of T-Block, over 60 metres of it, along with some of the canalside roof, is being restored with the aim of providing even more space for the public to explore. It involves complicated scaffolding which will soon extend out over the canal, so that passing vessels will have to hoot and pass, under supervision and one at a time. A green water-tank which projected upwards on the roof, is being removed, just a complicated ‘minor’ part of the programme, which is ahead of schedule after the mild winter. The interior, which has slept Alice-like for a long time, retains its fine flagged floor, and has huge and sturdy wooden roofbeams whose peeling paint will be replaced. They have not deteriorated during their

dormancy, and look set for further centuries of service, along with the sandstone walls. This edifice was built to last! And further sections of it will have new life and purpose. If you look down from the stairwell in the centre of the main block, you will read the words Salt’s Piazza in gold letters on Salt’s Mill green. This open area is gradually being developed at three levels and will, when complete, extend to the canal itself. The canalside frontage of the Mill has great potential for leisure and gastronomic pleasure. So, what’s going on at the Mill reflects the Silver family’s commitment, both imaginatively and financially, to this unique friend of ours. Oh, and by the way, there’s something called a Festival in Saltaire in September. The Mill will surely have something surprising on offer – and as ever something classy for locals and travellers to see and enjoy.

Saltaire Festival is back! by Claire Gibbons

The Saltaire Festival team is pleased to announce that 2017 Festival planning is very much under way, and the dates for this year’s Festival, held across the World Heritage Site, are Friday 8 September to Sunday 17 September. Following the success of last year’s Festival events and activities will follow a similar pattern, with the opening weekend including the incredibly popular Open Gardens and Sculpture trail, as well as pop-ups in houses and family activities in Roberts Park. Events run right through the week, as well as the two weekends, and there really is something for everyone - there’ll be drama, music, and comedy as well as exhibitions throughout the Festival in venues across the village.

Get involved Residents of Saltaire Village are being encouraged to get involved with the opening weekend and to be part of the Open Gardens trail, where speciallycurated sculptures and outdoor artworks are matched with participating gardens throughout the village. Residents can also submit ideas for popup venues in village houses, which have become a popular addition to the first weekend. Previous pop-up houses have included cafes, arts and activity spaces, performance and music venues, and shops, with a focus on local, handmade or vintage wares. Ros Garside, Chair of the Saltaire Festival Board, is already looking forwards to this year’s Festival, “We were really thrilled with the

attendance at last year’s events. The opening and finale weekends were the busiest we have seen them since the Festival started back in 2003. The Festival’s success is a testament to the quality of

the events and activities that take place across the 10 days, and to the hard work and dedication of the volunteer teams who work all year for free, to make the Festival happen.” Festival Volunteers The Festival is run entirely by volunteers, and I spoke to a few of them to find out why they got involved. Bernie Sheehan said, “I joined the Festival team because it gave me an opportunity to put my skills and experience to good use for the benefit of my local community. And it’s great fun!” Maria Glot agrees, “The whole volunteering process and Festival generate an atmosphere of friendship, positivity, achievement and warmth and that means thousands of people have a ‘glad to be alive’ time.” Collet Christie got involved after seeing the article in the T&A calling for more volunteers, “As a freelance project manager I felt I was now in a position where I had the time and capacity to take on voluntary work, so I contacted the Festival organisers to offer my experience and skills.” Collet’s

story echoes my own – having gone freelance last year I now enjoy using my skills and experience to help promote the Festival and get more people involved in its success. And we’d like to encourage more people to sign up as volunteers, either in the run up to the Festival, or to assist with events during the Festival itself.

Julia Calver: Inspiring art Saltaire Inspired’s ambition is to make the village an internationally recognised centre for the visual arts, so the Review asked Julia Calver, the charity’s chair, to talk about their work and events by Haigh Simpson

It’s your first Arts Trail as the new chair of Saltaire Inspired. What does the role involve and how are you finding it? It’s a privilege to be involved in Saltaire Inspired, from being a frequent visitor to now, as Chair, working with a team of passionate and creative people. The role of chair is rotated every three years, which I think ensures there are fresh eyes and energy building on the amazing work of the previous Chair, and yes this is my first year. There are some core tasks required of every Chair such as adhering to the organisation’s vision – to inspire people of all ages and backgrounds to participate in the arts, sustaining its funding and managing key partnerships. This enables the team to run a successful programme of events over the year. These include Saltaire Arts Trail 27-29 May, The Makers Fair at Saltaire Festival in September and the Saltaire Living Advent Calendar which runs throughout December.

These events couldn’t happen without the support and commitment of volunteers, local venues and the Grade II listed homes of Saltaire residents, as well as a large number of fabulous artists and makers who exhibit and sell their work. It truly is a privilege to be part of this.

What can people expect to see at this year’s event? Well, 2017 celebrates 10 years of the Saltaire Arts Trail and this year’s theme - Inside Out - means an exciting and engaging visual arts programme. At the heart of the Trail are the now famous Open Houses - a village-wide gallery set in the homes of residents and local businesses. There’ll be free creative activities, workshops, demonstrations and drop-in sessions for all ages across the village, and thanks to Arts

Council Funding, some special events - two large-scale light-based special commissions – art projections on the outside of Open Houses, an Artquest trail of 15 QR code plaques with downloadable digital artists work, again a new thing for this year based on the Inside Out theme, a highlight from last year, and the Lasting Impressions exhibition returns to the rooftop space of Salt’s Mill – please doaa check this out, not only for the wonderful artwork, but also the astonishing space. ARTbound Community will be managing a Payand-Display exhibition at Shipley College’s Exhibition Hall, our knitted red creatures will be back and dotted around the village again, there’ll be a postcard competition managed by the College’s Enterprise Students, and a range of workshops run by Bradford College.

Bigger than ever this year, the Makers Fair in Victoria Hall will play host to 68 designermakers across three rooms and over two floors. The Fair offers unique and affordable contemporary craft and design to buy or commission, directly from some of the UK’s best creative talent. Always be sure to bring some cash.. there’s something for everyone. There’ll be free demonstrations by exhibitors, with visitors having the opportunity to discover more about the crafts of pottery throwing, textile weaving, screenprinting, woodworking, clay sculpting, and more, as well as giving visitors the chance to have a go. Are there any artists you’re particularly excited about? All the artists and designer makers are selected by an independent panel and we’re always amazed by the creative talents who apply to be part of the Arts Trail. Over the weekend we ensure there are times they can come and meet each other and these networking opportunities stimulate collaboration and further plotting of exciting new projects. This year we’re delighted to have received Arts Council funding to commission digital and installation artist Steve Manthorp of ADEPT to create visual arts projections at dusk on the Friday and Saturday evening of the Bank Holiday weekend. How did the opportunity come about and what’s your background? My background is varied, ranging from establishing and managing the Education programme at Bradford Festival 1989-1996 to working at the Arts Council for ten years. I now teach Events Management at Leeds Beckett University, focussing on creative event design. I’ve always been passionate about the arts and volunteering in my local community, and Saltaire Inspired brings these two passions together beautifully.

Do you still get time to pursue your own artistic projects? What else have you got going on? With a full time teaching role and as the volunteer chair of a fabulous event with a growing reputation, it’s hard to find extra time – however I’m undertaking some funded research on the state of circus events in the North in preparation for the 250th anniversary of the birth of circus in the UK in 2018. There’ll be all kinds of celebratory events over the year across the UK – maybe a theme for us to consider at Saltaire Inspired? Has your experience with events such as the Saltaire Festival and the Bradford Festival been useful? Oh, absolutely! No matter how simple it appears to put on an event, it’s always far more complex than it seems. Our famous Open Houses challenge the concept of art galleries. Residents and local artists across Saltaire village open up their Grade II listed homes, letting you enjoy contemporary art by both local artists and artists selected from across the UK. Our theme for 2017 is Inside Out, and through digital technology, life and art will spill out onto the streets of Saltaire. Two specially commissioned videos will be projected on the outsides of houses, imagining the life within, and visitors will be invited to take part in a digital Art Hunt, following a trail of images, music and soundbites through the village. The Tour de Yorkshire

Last yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Tour de Yorkshire winner Thomas Voeckler, who will be competing again in 2017 in his final year on the tour.

Stage Three: Sunday 30 April – Bradford to Fox Valley, Sheffield, 194.5km (120.9 miles) The decisive stage of this year’s race – ominously titled The Yorkshire Terrier due to its punishing parcours – exits Bradford’s City Park at 12:10pm and takes a scenic trip to the Dales before heading back along the Aire Valley for the first of eight climbs on the Côte de Silsden at 14:04pm. The Côtes de Haworth and Leeming then follow in quick succession at 14:22pm and 14:32pm respectively before the peloton reaches the Côte de Shibden Wall. This cobbled beast will be crested at 14:54pm before an intermediate sprint takes place in Clifton at 15:09pm. There’s no respite as the

race passes into South Yorkshire, and the final sprint points are up for grabs in Stocksbridge at 16:47pm before the weary riders tackle a gruelling 22km concluding loop featuring no less than four categorised climbs. The Côte de Deepcar is first up at 16:52pm and the Côtes de Wigtwizzle (16:58pm) and Ewden Height (17:01) come one after the other before one last drag up the Côte de Midhopestones at 17:07pm. Anyone left in contention after that will duke it out for the stage and overall victory in Fox Valley at 17:15pm.

Local business achievements to be recognised in the fifth annual Keighley & Airedale Business Awards by Howard Martin

2017 sees the Keighley & Airedale Business Awards return for the fifth consecutive year. This reflects the success of previous years and sees the awards expanded to cover the Saltaire, Shipley and Baildon postcode areas. All businesses in these postcode areas are now eligible to enter and are invited to celebrate the story of their success with us. This prestigious annual event is now a regular feature on the local business calendar and this success has enabled the Awards to expand and cover businesses in the wider Airedale area. The event culminates with a gala presentation evening hosted by BBC Look North anchorman Harry Gration on 30 June at Keighley’s Victoria Hall. The awards close on Friday 28 April so businesses are encouraged to get their entries in as soon as possible. The event is organised by local businesses and services that promote and support business within the area. They freely donate their time and services on a voluntary basis. It’s both free and easy for all businesses to enter and further information and a list of the award categories can be found at www. keighleybusinessawards.co.uk Businesses can enter up to two relevant awards categories. Tickets to attend the presentation evening cost £35, which includes a four course meal, and can be obtained via the website. We know there’s a wealth of creative talent in Saltaire and Shipley, but sometimes it’s hard to appreciate just how much. It’s the nature of creative endeavour that the hard graft takes place out of the spotlight, and remarkable things can come together behind the scenes. Lauren K. Nixon is a young locally-based indie author and publisher who has released two books under the radar in the last 12 months. The first was a group short story anthology, Title Not Included, but more recently she has published Echoes Of The Light, a collection of three long short stories, in her own right. This is just the tip of the iceberg. A prolific fan fiction author, Nixon has also completed a novella, the first novel (and part of the second) in a projected series, as well as a couple of plays. Having met through our involvement with last year’s Shakespeare in the Park, I wanted to get more information on her background and what led her to writing.

“I came from Staffordshire to Bradford to study archaeology,” she tells me. “I can’t think of anything that could possibly have better prepared me to write. It’s such a mad, broad, interdisciplinary subject, in the same way as literature - you take something from everywhere. It puts magic into the landscape. That’s why I write as well – magic and influence and human accident.” There’s plenty of magic in Nixon’s work. Rooks And Apples, her collection’s opening story, starts as a mid-20th century story of unspoken love - think Brief Encounter - but slowly moves into a mysterious time travel tale. Still, the rest of the story keeps its feet on the ground

alongside this piece of what her website describes as ‘everyday magic’. Other stories in the volume mix up the genres further, with hard sci-fi, murder mystery and thriller elements. “My style differs depending on what I’m reading,” she says. “With Rooks And Apples, I was reading a lot of Ngaio Marsh. As for The Long Dark, I saw a programme about Helium 3. I thought, I want to write about a Helium 3 mine, and then it turned into a murder mystery. With The Butterfly And The Lion, I’ve been practicing my thriller writing and it was an experiment in that.” I ask how such disparate stories can sit together in a volume, and she suggests,

“They all have themes of light and shadows and echoes – whether it’s an echo of remembering or the light and the dark on the Moon, or things hidden. I always like to explore several different meanings of a particular situation.” It’s no surprise to learn that Nixon ‘wrote’ her first story when she was two. “I’ve always been scribbling something,” she explains. More recently, fan fiction has been a way of honing her craft. “I’ve been writing fan fiction for about 12 years, and it was a while before I was brave enough to start writing my novel - which I haven’t published yet -, and now I’ve been brave enough to start publishing my own work.”

Self-publishing is a way to circumvent the laborious and frustrating process of placing work with a publisher, meaning that she became the publisher herself.

“I got a bit of advice that it looks better if you have a publishing house. I got a friend to make a logo that suits both the archaeology and the writing, so that’s something I’ll keep for everything I publish now.” Having published her initial two books, there are plans for plenty more in the pipeline. First there will be the next volume from her writing group, Short Story Superstars. She tells me how this project came about, saying,

“I wanted to write different things. I just wanted one simple prompt and if it doesn’t work out that month, that’s fine.”A couple of friends showed interest, ..then suddenly there were nine of us and now there are about 27. I like coming up with the prompts, it gives me a bit of a head start!” The next volume is expected around August this year.

Under her own name, her novella The Lovely Perch should be out in either in December or next spring. “Because it’s a silly

romantic book, I thought I might try and aim it at next Valentine’s Day. I wrote when I had a bit of an obsession with Twelfth Night and it’s in pseudo-Shakespearean language.”

The forthcoming novel is called House Of Vines. “It’s a contemporary fantasy and it’s

about two inches thick. There’s a werewolf and witches and a house populated with vines and an evil wizard… Lots of chaos!”

Tour de Yorkshire comes to Saltaire

Watch as some of the worlds best riders head through Saltaire on stage three of the Tour de Yorkshire. The race will start in Bradfordâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s City Park just after midday before heading on Keighley Road towards Saltaire and Shipley. The route through Saltaire will see the riders head down the cobbles of Victoria Road and along Caroline Street and up Exhibition Road before riding down Saltaire Road and on towards Ilkley. Alpaca @ Merchants Quay

A collective of local artists, musicians, DJs, promoters and sound engineers are coming together to host an all day mini-festival this April at Merchants Quay, Shipley. Throughout the day into the night an awesome line-up up of performance artists will provide an eclectic soundtrack ranging from hip hop, electronica, ambient and alternative through to house and techno. Dozens of local artists will be displaying and selling their work throughout the day and street food stalls and a fully licensed bar will keep people suitably refreshed. The first market on Darley Street was well received and the traders were very happy with both the footfall and sales, selling items including candles, ceramics, food and paintings. The second market will showcase a selection of the previous traders, and also a mix of new traders selling jewellery, produce and craft, and will run on both the Saturday and Sunday. Matt Lamont

Matt Lamont is the director of FoxDuo Design, director of Assembly Bradford and co-organises the Made Bradford markets. He is also a founding member of Chapel Street Studio and a design book collector. Favourite place to hang around in and around Saltaire? It depends on if I’m socialising or working. I love relaxing in Tambourine Coffee with a book or my laptop and spending an evening in Fannys Ale House after work.

Local event you could not live without? Saltaire Festival. Music, beer and food are things I can’t live without. Although, I tend to have too much beer and eat too much food over the weekend. It’s great the festival continues to happen every year.

Local business you admire? Edward Street Bakery and The Triangle. Home baked goods and the finest selection of beers around.

Local person you admire (past or present)? Everyone who puts up with my ranting and wittering at the pub on Sunday evenings.
