New restaurant to open in Saltaire
Earn a Place in Saltaire’s History
Curryosity will open its doors in early December with some exciting plans lined up for the launch event.

A new concept in Indian food is to open its first flagship store in Saltaire. The site at 69 Bingley Road has been completely renovated by the new owners Zulfi Karim and Saira Ali.
It aims to bring a fresh approach to curry in a relaxed and comfortable environment, specialising in creating authentic and ancient recipes from South Asia using local producers. Saltaire Stories are looking for local residents to help raise £6,500 towards a Saltaire Archive by adopting a box.
The unique Saltaire Archive has thousands of documents, images, press cuttings and other papers that are organised and stored in special Archive Boxes. The aim is to get the Archive available online to enable learners of all ages to gain access to items that support their studies. A minimum contribution of £100 for each box is being sought in order to reach the target. Email saltairestories@gmail.com for application forms.
Festival celebrates Leeds Liverpool bicentenary
Sunday 16 October 2016 marked the bicentenary of the first complete crossing of the Leeds and Liverpool Canal and Bingley and neighbouring Saltaire celebrated in true style. The Lord Mayor of Bradford, pealing bells, a brass band and cheering crowds welcomed the Kennet, a former working boat and now a museum, to Saltaire, before the boat set off on its historic journey to Bingley where more bells rang out and crowds awaited by the famous Five Rise Locks. The Kennet was recreating the full 127-mile journey and would take in 91 locks in all, with the journey on Saturday alone navigating Hirst Lock, Dowley Gap Lock, Bingley Three Rise and Bingley Five Rise, as a grand flotilla followed on. Activities took place across Bingley from the canal towpath itself through to the town centre. Indoor and outdoor markets at the Arts Centre and Market Square showcased local and homemade goods, whilst choirs, musicians and even a ukulele band entertained a crowd of all ages at the top of Five Rise.

A massive part of Saltaire’s appeal is the way it blends old and new. The historical element is what makes it a World Heritage site and it’s also a living, thriving community with a rich culture, rebooted by Jonathan Silver’s forward-looking vision and David Hockney’s contemporary art. The House Of Rose And Brown, a presence in Saltaire in some form for around a decade, manages the same trick. It presents that past in novel ways for a contemporary audience. Run by Caroline and Julian Brown, the business has been dealing in vintage clothing and homewares through various shops and regular vintage fairs since 2007. As with Saltaire it’s not just a question of age, as Caroline makes clear when I ask her what vintage means to her. “I believe,” she tells me, “that vintage isn’t just how old it
is, it’s the fact that it’s not mass-produced. You’re wanting things that are craftsman-made. It’s also green fashion. We say it’s the eco way to shop!”
Both Caroline and Julian hail originally from Surrey. “Our parents only lived 15 miles from each other,” Caroline says. They eventually met at Huddersfield University, where they were ‘slightly mature students’, Caroline studying interior design and Julian social work. It was during this time that Caroline first experienced Saltaire, visiting for a course trip. The quirkiness and contrast of dentists’ chairs next to Burmantofts pottery at Salts Mill caught her imagination. Julian’s brother also lived in Saltaire, so he came here on family visits. Their initial post-university move was to Brighton, where Caroline worked in admin and experimented with pop-up events such as art exhibitions long before the concept became popular.
However Saltaire had made an impression, drawing them back to live nearby in Shipley while Caroline worked as an administrator for the Arts Council and Julian took on healthcare work in Leeds. Things changed for Caroline though, with a competition called Enterprise Island.
“It was a Bradford Council initiative,” she says. “They asked for people who had business ideas. It was like Dragon’s Den but not as terrifying. My idea was a vintage boutique and art gallery but they tried to guide me into the interior design side because of my degree.” Caroline’s determination to follow her vision won out though. As Julian comments, “You’re a tough cookie!” By chance her sister-in-law informed her that a shop on Victoria Road was available and she took the opportunity to move in for an initial two week pop-up run.
“ I met the other creative people on Enterprise Island. I thought I’d take the shop for two weeks and run it with those guys, where you have your own space and you divide your labour and your costs. I approached the landlord, he said yes, and within a week or two we were open. The vintage side in particular took off straight away. I think that’s partly because Saltaire people are interested in history and aesthetics.” With location, enthusiasm and a promising start on her side, she gave up her day job, and threw her energies into the shop. “I was
always a risk-taker but you could see from the books that we had enough interest. The landlord said, ‘We’ll try it for another few weeks,’ and I just went for it.”
Almost ten years later the two week pop-up is still selling vintage items. Caroline tried a number of different models. Interview Feature 15
“There were times when it was just Rose and Brown in the shop and times when we’ve shared it. You do whatever you can to survive.”

When the recession bit just a year after the shop opened, that was a further challenge, but the business weathered it, expanding into homeware and into vintage fairs.
By that time Saltaire had possibly passed the point of vintage saturation. “You could
“The homeware shop was what I really wanted,” explains Caroline. “I like vintage fashion, but homeware is my main interest.” However with two shops as well as the fairs, another big change was needed, so Julian came on board with the business.
“I had numerous different jobs in the health industry,” he explains, “and in the end got burnt out, so we tried to work out a way for both of us to work together.” Caroline jokes that she gave Julian a six month performance review to make sure he was on the right track. The homeware shop was originally on Bradford Road, currently a hot-spot for the likes of The Fox and Magpie and The

use the amount of vintage in Saltaire as a selling point,” she muses. “We organised the vintage day, where we did a trail of six vintage shops, plus the Vintage Fair, Carlton Antiques, and the bookshop. But for a small village to have six vintage shops…” She believes that there was
an enduring enthusiasm for vintage among the Saltaire community but wonders if some of the quirkiness was not appreciated by the tourists. Ultimately though, the effort of maintaining two shops plus the expense of renting in Saltaire led them to concentrate on the vintage fairs. They’re both proud that the original House Of Rose And Brown shop, which they handed over to friends, is still keeping the vintage flame burning in the village. When I ask if there might be any plans for
a return to a shop in the future, Julian is characteristically cautious, pointing out that their calendar of events means they would have to plan such a move a couple of years ahead. Equally characteristically, Caroline talks enthusiastically of the possibility of squeezing in a pop-up venture, but sadly there are no concrete plans at the moment. Meanwhile vintage fairs have become the couple’s bread and butter. “The fairs have always been a crucial part of the business,” says Caroline. “The same day I first spoke to the
landlord of the little shop I also spoke to Victoria Hall about hiring the venue to have a fair.” She goes on to describe their programme,
“We put 15 vintage fairs on last year. Five Saltaire ones, three record fairs, two in Whitby, and then we work with Bradford Council on their car show at City Hall, at Lotherton Hall in Leeds we work with Leeds Museums and Galleries, and at Cliffe Castle. We did the wedding Fair at Victoria Hall as well. Our Saltaire 2018 shows are already in the diary and Whitby are looking for us to put the 2018 dates in as well.” “15 is a full calendar. You worry about the quality of your events. We keep the standard up to ensure that people think the admission fee is worth it. If they’re into vintage they’ll know that it’s comparable to other fairs.” Quality is achieved by building up a base of regular stallholders, who bring a full spread of all the eras. “There’s a lot of admin
because we’ve got 600 stallholders on our list. It’s contacting them and liaising and making sure everything runs smoothly. But the bulk is promotion. You have to do press releases, flyers, banners and all the listings. We spend a day a week printing and laminating posters. We’ve got a Christmas vintage fair at Cliffe Castle in a couple of weeks, and we were in Keighley yesterday going round the shops with flyers and posters and putting them on lampposts and putting the banner up.”
There are two particular ways in which the business has diversified. One is the inclusion of events in Whitby, “our biggest undertaking,” as Caroline explains. “This year we had 64 stalls. We had the idea of a vintage fair by the sea and we considered Morecambe first because of the beautiful Midland Hotel, but it was too small. Then we discovered the other coast. I’d never been, but I just fell in love with it. It was the theme of vintage by the sea, because that brings together two of my favourite things.” The second innovation, which has allowed Julian his distinctive creative input, is the record and retro fair. Caroline comments,
“Music is his main passion, so it was nice to have something that we could work on together.” Julian takes this up, “The record fair is my baby. I do the backing music for our vintage fairs and it will always be music from the 20s through to the 80s. You go to a lot of vintage fairs and it’s Glenn Miller on repeat all day. We try to keep an eclectic but good collection of songs. For the record and retro fair, 80% or more of the people come to buy records, but we have stalls selling homewares and music memorabilia, film posters and vintage toys.” There’s clearly a lot of hard work involved but the passion and enthusiasm is equally clear, so I bring the conversation around to what Caroline loves best in vintage. “As
far as fashion goes, I’d say my favourite period was the 30s in terms of admiring it. I can’t wear it! I can wear the 60s - the 60s suits me better. For homewares, any era so long as it’s a bit quirky. My era is ‘quirky’.” Long may that quirkiness prevail.

20 Event Preview
It’s December and our antidote to Commercial Christmas, the Saltaire Living Advent Calendar, is with us again. Even the organisers have no idea what designs people will put in their windows until the 4pm switch-on time on the appointed day when the window is revealed to Saltaire residents, visitors and, via social media, the large number of people across the world who follow us. We’ve also been encouraged by the numbers of other communities, from the far recesses of Canada to near-at-hand Baildon, who are planning their own event this year. Many aspects remain the same. We’re especially keen to encourage those with little artistic experience to give it a go. It’s often the less complex designs that make for the most effective windows... An all-time favourite of ours features a silhouette of Morecambe and Wise in black card, but we’ve also had back-projected film clips and Q code-linked websites. Some are finely detailed and need close inspection to reveal the fine workmanship while others, such as the one that occupied multiple windows on the end of the mill, could only be appreciated at a distance. We can get quite nostalgic about earlier years’ windows. Who can remember the Cool Yule saxophoneplaying lizard from 2006, the fox and moon from 2011, the Christmas-stealing Grinch in 2013 and George the cat in 2012? The window makers themselves have very different approaches - a jewel-like Michael Jackson image was constructed the night before by children in the house whilst Delia’s ‘defrost’ (your turkey) was planned the previous year. Aside from cooking hints, subject matter varies enormously from the conventionally religious to the topical. One year we had a spate of Frozen-themed windows, last year Peace was a recurrent theme - the windows reflect what’s on people’s minds. There’ll be some changes this year - one of our younger community members, Marnie
Walford, aged seven, has helped design the cover of the flyer which provides a map of the houses. These brochures should be coming through Saltaire doors in the weeks prior to the event but extra copies will be available from the usual outlets, including the Visitor Centre. The December 2015 windows have been featured in a set of 12 charity Christmas Cards available from the Mill, Visitor Information Centre, Salt’s Pots and on-line through the Saltaire Inspired website. With the Christmas Eve Carol Singing now under new management, this event will set off from The Cap And Collar at 6pm and will progress via a selection of windows to our sponsor for the event, Edwards St. Bakery. Do bring a lantern if you have one. An appearance by the Hall Royd Brass Band, which usually tours the streets ‘on the final Monday night rehearsal before Christmas’, is not a fixed event but ‘may well be 19th December’. Perhaps as well to keep a door open to listen out for their traditional sound. With so many people wishing to get involved in the event there’ll be ten windows on the first of December, then the usual one per night (4pm to 10.30 pm) until Christmas Eve. For those busy in the run up to Christmas, the windows will continue to be lit until 5 January 2017.

The festival that never sleeps
After a successful event in September, work is already underway to prepare for the 2017 Saltaire Festival. And they need your help... by Claire Gibbons

Each September tens of thousands of visitors flock to Saltaire to enjoy the annual Saltaire Festival and 2016, the Festival’s 13th year, was no exception with over 35,000 people being welcomed to the village over the ten-day Festival. Whilst the glorious weather certainly helped the festivities along, a packed programme of events provided something for everyone and ensured that young and old were entertained, fed, and even educated across the fortnight. Highlights this year from over 100 - mainly free - events included the sold-out Clare Teal concert at Victoria Hall, the Open Gardens weekend, the ever-popular comedy night, and the family-friendly main stage entertainments and stalls in Roberts Park. For such a small village Saltaire has a festival that punches above its weight, and what might be surprising is that the whole thing is a small volunteer-led charity which began life back in 2003. I’ve been attending Saltaire Festival for many years as a punter and have seen it outgrow its humble roots in the Caroline Street car park where friends and I would gather with tinnies from the Co-op to watch a band or two, to encapsulate all that is great about Saltaire - its history, its heritage, its residents and its future. The days of the car park are long gone, and we can now spend ten glorious days in September enjoying all that is great and good about the World Heritage Site through events, activities, entertainments, food and drink in venues up and down the village. But this year I also saw it from the other side, as - after a call back in January for more people to get involved - I got involved! I attended the open meeting at the start of the year where residents and friends of the
Festival alike went along to see how they could help the Festival survive – it was running low on people and funding and the future of the Festival couldn’t be guaranteed without more financial and human support. How could I not get involved? I joined the Communications Team – one of the three main teams that make up the Festival Back Room, as it were, alongside the Events Team and the Volunteer Team, none of which is paid. We set to work straight away, in fact the Board of Directors and three teams meet all year round and had already made a start (none of this is paid work). There was a new website to build, a new brand to launch, social media to plan and it was all very exciting. Before we knew it the website was live, social media was buzzing, the Festival launch event took place and the end of summer was marked by yet another memorable Festival. But we’re now back to where we were this time last year. Each year the Festival costs £50,000 to run and there’s no guaranteed funding. This money ensures that most events are free so that as many people as possible can enjoy the Festival each year. Fewer commercial sponsors are getting involved and public sector and grant-making bodies are facing reduced budgets – it gets trickier each year to raise those funds. So this is where we need your help! As a punter you can donate to the Festival through the website, and we’re on the lookout for new

commercial sponsors to support the 2017 Festival (remember those 35,000 visitors…). We also need enthusiastic humans to help with the organisation and running of the Festival. We need people to help with the finances and fundraising and we’re always on the lookout for new board members – something amazing to add to your CV as well as meeting and having fun with new people in the village and feeling part of the community. We’re starting now and we’d love you to get involved. Bring your experience, your ideas, your passions – it’s your Festival so come along and put your stamp on 2017. 26 Community Feature

Saltaire Inspired organises two Fairs for contemporary designer and makers each year, in Saltaire’s Victoria Hall. The Fairs have a growing reputation amongst exhibitors and visitors and have become a showcase for some of the best contemporary craft available for sale or commission in the north of England. Artists and designer-makers travel to Saltaire from across the UK bringing exciting, innovative work in a wide range of craft disciplines. There are demonstrations of craft techniques and a very popular Art Tombola, with amazing prizes donated by the artists and makers, the proceeds of which go towards funding Saltaire Inspired’s community events, including the Living Advent Calendar. A major aim of the Makers Fair is to support and promote UK craft practitioners. Since 2015, they’ve been providing subsidised
spaces for new graduates from Bradford School of Art, and this September they launched a new Makers Fair Exhibitor Award scheme to highlight creativity, professionalism and good practice. They were delighted to welcome Hayley Walker, artistic director at the Craft Centre and Design Gallery in Leeds, as the judge. Hayley was hugely impressed by the quality of the exhibitors and deliberated long and hard over her decisions.
Award Winners...: Best Display: Awarded for the most creative and outstanding display stand. The winner was Leigh Shepherd, whose work will be familiar to many. The Makers Fair was the first event she exhibited at, seven years ago, and so is very special to her. Leigh creates a range of resin art tiles and jewellery using upcyled materials - earrings from sixpence coins, pendants from Scrabble tiles, brooches from dominoes… and this year a new range of resin art boxes. Award Winners...: Best Newcomer: Awarded to the most outstanding exhibitor in their first year at the Makers Fair. Winner was Lubna Din at Studio2QQ Lubna recently completed her MA in Contemporary Craft Practice at Nottingham Trent University, and her delicate textile work references the rich textile heritage of the Kashmir Valley, with motifs that trace family stories and memories. The Makers Fair 2017 was her first commercial show. Our judge was impressed by the very high level of skill shown in Lubna’s work, as well as with her enthusiasm, her passion, and her professional attitude to making and showing. www.atinfullofmemories.tumblr.com Specially commended in this category were Sid Barlow, Emma Louise Wilson, Judith Brown Jewellery, What Kate Loves, and Julia Ogden. Special Award for Impact!: Awarded to ceramicist Jo Lee World for taking our judge’s breath away for originality and work that takes a risk. This award didn’t actually exist until Hayley saw Jo’s funny/disturbing ceramic work, which doesn’t fit into either of our original categories but which, she felt, should be celebrated for that very reason. Jo is a regular visitor to Saltaire, and has shown in the Open Houses as well as the Makers Fair. Our judge was bowled over by the quirky individuality of the work, and by Jo’s willingness to experiment with ideas, unconstrained by the need to make sales. www.jolee.uk.com

Sisters Bethan and Viky have started to provide outdoor education to help build a better future for Bradford’s young people. Aire Valley Forest School was set up this year and is already getting young and old alike out and about and enjoying the great outdoors. Bethan is a creative and enthusiastic earlyyears educator with five years experience in a variety of settings, and Viky is a forest school practitioner and works and volunteers with several local charities on environmental projects. They aim to create a safe setting for young people to develop skills to support them in adult life, whilst bringing exciting learning opportunities outside the traditional classroom environment. Forest School is based on the Scandinavian style of learning in the outdoors. Regular interactions in nature have been proven to help social, emotional, physical, linguistic and cognitive learning through teamwork, risk taking and problem solving activities. Over the last year Aire Valley Forest School have worked with partners to develop links with the community, including workshops with Brick Box Arts who ran
recent successful events at the old Marks & Spencers building on Darley Street, and the Fresh Aire Do at Cliffe Castle, Keighley. They have provided free activities for local residents in the Keighley Big Local area and family sessions have also been taking place once a month in Heaton. What’s next? Fortnightly sessions for ages 2-5 years start on Saturday 18 February 2017, 2-4pm. The first session is free and then it’s £25 for five sessions. The view from the deck of Kennet, as we rounded the curve from the Three Rise Locks to the Five Rise Locks on Sunday October 16, was truly unbelievable. We were on the second day of our commemorative crossing from Leeds to Liverpool, re-enacting the very first full passage of the Leeds & Liverpool Canal that had taken place back in October 1816. Already that morning we had been greeted by large cheering crowds, a choir and pealing church bells in Saltaire, despite the pouring rain, and we should have been given an inkling of what lay ahead by the reception we received at the Three Rise, by which time the skies had brightened. But nothing could have fully prepared us for the sight of the welcoming masses that covered each and every layer of the Five Rise locks. People were crowded on the lock-sides, people were crowded on the bridges. The first Bingley Canal Festival had been a success, an overwhelming success. The people of Bingley turned out in their thousands to greet Kennet and its accompanying flotilla. Bingley was a canal town once again. Since the construction of the much-needed bypass the town centre of Bingley has been physically and psychologically separated from the canal. Many years earlier, before the station was moved to its current location, the commuters of Bingley would be greeted by the stunning vista of the Three Rise and Five Rise every morning. Now, visitors arriving by train are greeted by a local area map with not a single indication that the visitor stands less than a mile away from one of the British canal system’s seven engineering wonders. The Bingley Canal Festival came about as the result of an unprecedented exercise in organisational and community collaboration. Initiated by the Leeds & Liverpool Canal Society, the Canal and River Trust and Bradford Council, it demonstrated the critical linking role that can now be played
by the newly-formed Bingley Town Council. In no time the numerous business and voluntary organisations had been mobilised. Every available space for stalls - in the Arts Centre, in the market square, on the canal side – was booked well before the appointed day. So how can we build upon these first important steps in the redefinition of a new relationship between town and canal? It would not be over-ambitious to look towards the inauguration of a full visitor experience – adequate parking space and an interpretation centre – such as can be found at the location of Great Britain’s other canal marvels - the Foxton Incline Plane, the Anderton Lift, the Falkirk Wheel, the Standedge Tunnel. However, in the current climate of financial restraint, more simple measures may be needed. In the first instance we might signpost more fully the Bingley Locks Walk with starting points at both the railway station and the car park located at the lock end of the Town. The Bingley Walkers Are Welcome Group currently detail such a family walk on their website, and the Canal & River Trust Explorers Group have a useful leaflet which you can download. New information posts have been installed at both the Three Rise and Five Rise. But there is currently no information available within the town itself. Might full reunification of the town and the locks provide the centrepiece of a Second Bingley Canal Festival? Watch this space!

Festive Community Carol Singing
Saltaire’s festive community carol singing event will start at 6pm on Christmas Eve. Everyone is welcome to come along and join in for what is always a fun and friendly event. The carol singing follows a short trail stopping at selected living Advent windows around the village and ends at Edward St Bakery for tasty treats. This free annual event is always popular and creates a lovely Christmassy atmosphere. The group will meet outside the Cap and Collar at 6pm, although you can always arrive a bit earlier if you fancy a festive drink. Carol singers are encouraged to bring a lantern, torch or a phone so you can see the carol sheets. The event is suitable for all ages! Epilepsy Action Reindeer Stampede Now in it’s seventh year, the Epilepsy Action Reindeer Stampede is a 5km, festive family fun run raising money to help improve the lives of everyone affected by epilepsy.
After the success of recent years, this year’s run will take place in Lister Park in Bradford. A great way to kick off the festive season, the event is suitable for the whole family, with a mini-stampede for children under 8 years of age. On the day the park will be decorated throughout and carols performed at various points by local choirs and brass bands. 211 Deli is a family run, fully licensed, deli-bistro situated on Bingley Road.
Situated overlooking Salts Mill and a stone’s throw from the train station, Radstudio is a shop that is well placed in Saltaire, both in location and style.
By day the cafe offers a wide variety of hot and cold sandwiches, breakfasts, fresh salads, hot meals, and delicious homemade cakes, which are available either to eat in or to take away. All sandwiches are served using their freshly baked homemade focaccia bread, and are a must try. The evening menu includes 211 Deli’s hot rock specials, which allows you to cook your own meat, fish or veg on a block of volcanic rock. Hot and cold drinks are also available, including beer and wine.

The Cap & Collar
Shipley Glen Tramway
Cap and Collar opened its doors in November 2014 and won the award for Bradford Camra Pub of the Season in summer 2015.
The Shipley Glen Cable Tramway is the oldest working cable tramway in Great Britain. Dating from 1895, it was built to transport passengers to Shipley Glen where a small funfair was once located.
It has a rotating selection of real ales, craft kegs (key kegs only) and a carefully curated selection of bottles and cans which focus on the “Best of British� beers. Snacks such as gourmet popcorns and local artisan pork pies are available. This micropub has a relaxed cafe-style atmosphere conducive to enjoying both conversation and great beer. Being family friendly there is a selection of games and books to suit all ages and there is also a small beer yard which is perfect for those sunny afternoons and balmy summer evenings.
The Tramway is open on Saturday and Sunday afternoons between 12 pm and 4.30 pm, except January and February when it only opens on Sundays. There is a small museum at the bottom station displaying the history of the tramway and its unique (but sadly no longer in existence) Victorian/Edwardian Fairgrounds.. There is an Edwardian Sweet Shop at the top station where, loose sweets are sold from traditional glass jars and the volunteers run a number of special events during the year. The Best of Saltaire 49

Favourite place to eat in Shipley/Saltaire? My partner is vegan so The Aagrah is always a good bet for us. This autumn I’ve also really enjoyed Dandelion, the pop-up vegan cafe that’s been running at Merchant’s Quay.
Favourite place to relax in Shipley/Saltaire? I like to run and I’m constantly amazed at our proximity to some stunning outdoor locations - it’s great to be able to run up to the Glen, through the woods and along the canal, all over a relatively short distance.
Local event you could not live without? I’ve had an allotment up at Northcliffe for over 10 years now and the allotment bonfire is genuinely the highlight of my year!
Local business you admire? I think Heather Gregg’s yoga classes have filled a massive gap in Saltaire. Also Tim Rowbotham’s ironmongery store - he can fix practically anything!
Local person you admire? I’m full of admiration for the head teacher and deputy head at Saltaire Primary School - Mrs Stoker and Mr Whitehead. On top of running the school they’re at every school disco, swimming event, school trip and choir concert, baking, conducting, serving hot dogs, you name it! They have boundless enthusiasm and I hope they know they’re appreciated by so many parents.
