Hello, happy new year and welcome to issue 21 of the Saltaire Review. I must admit that after 21 issues it’s getting pretty hard writing these things without sounding too repetitive. Which got me thinking that it would be great to get some of our readers more involved in the production of the magazine. We’ve always encouraged community submissions and are lucky to have some fantastic contributors who have helped us along the way. We like to think they have benefited along the way too.

Openings at Salts Mill
by Eddie Lawler
10 ReviewFeature
I was privileged to attend two quite different opening events at t’Mill of late – a new art exhibition, and a book-launch. The common factor is that local residents featured in both. Maggie Smith and Colin Coates, prominent members of Saltaire History Club, launched their study, Salts Mill – The Owners And Managers 1853 to 1986, now on sale in the bookshop. Here is important and thorough research in a very readable style, into the way the Mill was directed from its foundation up to the cessation of textile production. Available literature on Saltaire rightly makes much of its founder but this book proves that the 130 years of textile production are by no means a one-man or even one-family show. Significantly, the book has forewords by two great-great-grandsons, Nick Salt and Jamie Roberts, thus addressing an imbalance of background information on the founder and a major successor. Some new source material on this successor has recently been made available by the Roberts family. Jamie, who frequently brings his alpacas to Saltaire from his Kilnsey farm, will be gratified to see his family contribution better represented here. The importance of other personae in the Saltaire drama is elucidated, such as Sir Titus’ manager Charles Stead, then the 20th century syndicate members Hill, Gates and Whitehead, the Guild family in the 1930s, the Ostrer family in the 1950s, up to the closure of production in the hands of Illingworth Morris. The book represents a major step forward in summarising the records and recognitions required for a thorough understanding of Saltaire’s history. The more recent history of Saltaire involves its promotion and development as a centre of culture and commerce, as envisioned by ‘second founder’ Jonathan Silver and continued by his family. Literature, music and art all find expression here, and the exhibition in Gallery II gave us locals, and
visitors from further afield, the opportunity to see some of the work of Saltaire-resident Jake Attree, who creates from his Dean Clough, Halifax studio and exhibits at various prominent galleries elsewhere. A Small Box Of River steps a little away from the expected Attree approach to painting in two respects. Firstly it’s not painting but drawing, in a fine style of Japanese pen-and-ink miniatures which are ‘boxable’, and secondly this is not a solo, it’s a collaboration of artist Attree with poet Robert Powell, whose work here bounces off Jake’s observations, memories and tales from his hometown of York. Jake led his Canadian-born poet-companion on strolls around the city - and especially its fringes and together they emphasize the character of York as defined by its famous river Ouse and its less prominent river Foss (cf. Salt and Roberts?). Jake is better known for his oil-paintings in expansive style, but here he shows mastery on a subtle scale, based on incisive observation and careful composition. He’s proud to inform us that the set of Japanese pens here used with such conviction was bought at Muji for a fiver (such is Yorkshire thrift). There are no people in these drawings, lots of trees and sky and various bridges, the manmade element by which York is largely known to us. But humans are upstaged – or should it be off-staged - here by the character of the rivers, and as Powell writes, “River is past before we know it.” His lines are thoughtful, both meditative and at times dramatic. This is a lovely enhancement to the Mill – but already past before we know it, as it will have moved on by the time you read this.

The archaeology of Hirst Wood Followng the progress of a group of local volunteers digging up Hirst Wood’s past as part of a local heritage project. by John Bromley
14 Community Feature
The pleasant surroundings of Hirst Wood, Shipley - set beside the canal with intriguing folds in the landscape and on occasions a raging river - have been a playground as well as a workplace for local people for centuries. Historical records exist but there has also been some conjecture about the history of the area. More information is likely to emerge as a result of the wood being included in a threeyear heritage project, funded largely by the Heritage Lottery Fund and led by Pennine Prospects. The project targets over 40 sites across the South Pennines in order to generate new information about the nature of the woodlands but also about the way in which the trees and the environment have been used and, consequently, influenced the social and economic life of local communities. Chris Atkinson, the Woodland Heritage Officer overseeing the heritage project, reports, “Over the course of 6 and 7 January the very first community archaeological woodland survey - as part of the Celebrate Our Woodland Heritage project - was undertaken at Hirst Wood. Over the two days 17 volunteers explored the woodland and recorded 58 archaeological features, some of which had not been previously identified or recorded.”
woodland. Details at www.celebrate-ourwoodland.co.uk or you can follow the project’s Facebook page - South Pennines Archaeology. Other woodlands in the Bradford district will feature in years two and three of the project, offering more opportunities to get involved.” Chris adds, “It was gratifying to get such good support from local people in the Hirst Wood survey so early in the new year! Thank you again to those who took part. What has been found and recorded will be important to the local community now and in the future.” It’s really exciting for local people to be able to take part in a community archaeology initiative that updates existing knowledge as well as adding new information. This information can be recorded as well as communicated to the public using the latest technologies.
“Working in small groups the volunteers were given guidance to accurately measure, record, photograph and ‘locate’ features by GPS. Recorded features included old trackways, quarries, charcoal burning platforms, woodland boundaries and the ruined cottages next to the site of New Hirst Mill. Further analysis of the recordings will be made in due course to produce a definitive report. “Those who weren’t able to take part may be interested in joining a survey at another

Golden Cabinet Returns A stellar lineup of alternative and electronica artists signal the return of Golden Cabinet at Shipley’s Kirkgate Centre. by Claire Gibbons
It’s Saturday night. It’s 7pm and hordes of people are making their way from Shipley train station to the Kirkgate Centre up the road. One might be mistaken for thinking that all of these people have gotten off at the wrong stop – but oh no. They know exactly where they are going. They are heading for some ‘good shit’ and boy, are they going to get some. For the uninitiated, Golden Cabinet is a gig night that takes place at the Kirkgate Centre in Shipley every other month-ish. It’s a showcase of the kinds of music that would usually only be found in the depths of Big London or Berlin and, as such, draws a crowd from far and wide including Big London itself, not to mention Birmingham, Manchester, Glasgow, Newcastle and beyond. Indeed, last time I went, I gave directions to a chap who had travelled from
Birmingham and couldn’t believe that such an eclectic and unique night was about to happen in usually sleepy Shippers. GC, as it’s affectionately known, has had a bit of a break following a run of sold out events over the last few years, but now they are back to wow and amaze once more. I spoke to Mark and Nick who are part of the GC team and they couldn’t be more chuffed with the onslaught of events that they have coming up in 2017. “We’ve all got eclectic tastes and we don’t all like the same things so I guess the gigs reflect that. GC nights are known to be great even if you’ve never heard of anyone that’s playing! People are prepared to take a chance and that’s really amazing.” The news that GC was returning was greeted with much anticipation over social media. Where else can you get to see such acts
IPreview Feature 19
as Gnod, Shit&Shine and Hey Colossus in a community centre, with amazing beer, vegan food (cake!) and the kind of atmosphere usually reserved for after dark festival parties somewhere deep in a forest – and you can get the last train home! “I think the crowds that come are a real part of how it feels. It’s a very unpretentious and inclusive atmosphere. Middle-aged parents come down with their teenage offspring and dance their asses off! Must be something about letting it all hang out in Shipley.” And the artists love it. The nights usually have three acts on, covering everything from punk to electro to noise and everything in between. Blood Music played back in January 2016 and GC made its mark. They remarked: “It has its own colours, it makes your thumbs go weird”. And I can totally see where they are coming from. But why Shipley and not Fancy Leeds or even Bradford city centre? The GC team are from in
20 Preview Feature
or around Shipley and like to contribute to the sense of community that comes from hanging out in the Kirkgate Centre. Mark and Nick again: “There’s a lot of really amazing things happening in Shipley and that’s partly down to the Kirkgate Centre for providing a space for a wide variety of people to meet up, chat, get help, try things out and make things happen which we feel has contributed to the idea of Shipley as a place to go to rather than a place you pass through.” And it’s not just about the music. GC have a long-running collaboration with the Print Project in Shipley who create stunning letterpress printed posters for each event (several of which adorn the walls in my house), and there are vinyl and tape stalls selling the artists’ wares, so punters rarely leave events empty handed. I, as well as many others, are incredibly excited. For a full list of upcoming Golden Cabinet gigs visit www.goldencabinetuk.co.uk

How did you get into illustration?
I’ve loved drawing since I was young and I’ve always had dreams of being a freelance illustrator. My first job was as a web designer and I’d try and incorporate my illustration into my design work whenever I could. I kept doing bits of illustration work on the side and in 2012 I was made redundant from my office job. I decided to give freelance illustration a go full-time and - touch wood - it’s been going well so far.
You seem to have developed a signature style, is that something you worked towards or did it come naturally? A bit of both really. I work digitally so my style is informed by certain software techniques I use. I’m naturally drawn to bright colours and bold graphics so I try and bring that into my own work. I’m always trying to improve my style and I’m constantly influenced by other artists and designers.
Are there any projects you’re particularly proud of ? Last year I worked on a food map of Italy for Gino D’Acampo’s new cookbook, which was a pleasure. I also worked on a children’s book for Lonely Planet with a team of designers and illustrators, and it was great to be involved in a big group project. Seeing your own work in a book shop or magazine is always exciting..
What’s your relationship with Bradford and Saltaire?
I’ve lived in Bradford for 17 years but I’m originally from Derbyshire. I came to Bradford in 1999 to study Electronic Imaging and Media Communications at the University of Bradford. I worked at the National Media Museum as a student and then was lucky enough to land a full time job there after graduating. Saltaire is one of my favourite places and I love exploring Salts Mill. The annual Arts Trail is a brilliant event and it’s been great to be involved with the Open Houses and Makers Fair in the past.
Describe your perfect working environment.
I worked at home in my attic when I was first getting started but after about six months I could feel the cabin fever setting in. I now share a studio in Leeds which helps me separate my work from home. A dream setup would be a shared studio somewhere in the countryside. Good music and good coffee are also essential requirements.
What do you like to do when you’re not illustrating?
I love travelling and I’m a keen walker. I try and get out in the Yorkshire Dales as much as possible. I’m a big film fan and visit the cinemas at the Media Museum whenever I can.

Bradford Waste Chasers In the spirit of cooperativism, we need solidarity in this age of austerity...An interview with Bradford Waste Chasers by Maia Kelly
Bradford Waste Chasers is a workers’ co-operative that aims to promote waste reduction and recycling in West Yorkshire. They provide confidential paper shredding, data destruction, recycling services and advice to households and businesses across the county. They’ve been doing this since 1990, when their cooperative company grew out of the voluntary group Bradford Recyclers. I spoke to Vivien, a member of Waste Chasers, to find out how they’re coping in a new age of austerity. “Currently, as a non-profit organisation, we fit into the Council’s Discretionary Rates Relief band. However as of April, it looks like we will have our rates relief cut completely. This means we will need to increase our prices, as well as try and take on extra work in order to survive. We know that a lot of our customers are struggling too,” said Vivien, “We’re finding that progressively more organisations, who were our customers, are also closing or moving out due to the cut back of council support. It’s such a loss to the
area to see so many local independent organisations go down; only the biggest companies are surviving.” What can we do about it? In the spirit of co-cooperativism, we can all put the word out, and encourage people we know to make more effort to support local organisations. Becoming more conscious consumers is an easy way to challenge the shareholder-dominated economy which has been stripping power and control from communities, towns and cities. We just need to let our communities know how infinitely more valuable their pennies are when circulated locally, rather than to distant companies. In the case of the paper shredding industry, not only does supporting a Yorkshire-based business save fuel and benefit the environment, but it also supports local jobs, and contributes enormously to improving the wealth of the regional economy. On average 50% more money is kept in the local economy when you spend at independents, rather than franchises. Moreover, keeping wealth local makes the area a nicer and more interesting place to live. I was really surprised to find out that minishredders cut paper fibres too small to be recycled into paper again. So having it shredded professionally works out both greener and faster. What’s more, one tonne of recycled paper saves 17 trees, 7,000 gallons of water, and 41 KW of energy. So, next time you’re in the office, spending hours by the mini-shredder trying to comply with the Data Protection Act while also melting the shredder from over-use, remember to call Waste Chasers. Unlike other companies, they won’t ask for all your personal details before giving you a quote. There are no
hidden costs, and no contracts. You can arrange a visit or collection, as a one-off or regular customer. Waste Chasers are based at Dockfield Road in Shipley. Call 01274 581775 or email enquiries@wastechasers.co.uk

Demdike Stare @ Golden Cabinet
The Orgasmic Audio Visual OrgyTM begins in fine style, as Golden Cabinet welcome the return of the mighty Demdike Stare to tear up the headline slot once again. They previously graced the Kirkgate Centre stage back in February 2014, when they left a gasping audience reeling for more. The duo of Miles Whittaker (MLZ, Hate, Pendle Coven, Suum Cuique, Millie etc.) and Sean Canty mould the well worn tropes of jungle, house, techno/ electro, dancehall and beyond into tantalisingly original new shapes whilst simultaneously retaining the character of their trademark sound. We’re pretty confident that their sophomore live set in Shipley is gonna be nothing short of a total nailer. Saturday 4 March, Kirkgate Centre
Lindisfarne @ The Live Room
During the early 70s Lindisfarne were one of the hottest folk rock bands in England, with chart placements on two of their albums that rivaled Jethro Tull, and had them proclaimed one of the most important groups of the decade. With a sound that mixed plaintive folklike melodies, earthy but well-sung harmonies, and acoustic and electric textures, the group seemed poised for international success. Owing to the usual vagaries of the music industry and the premature passing of founder member, Alan Hull, it never quite arrived, but the band always maintained a fiercely loyal fan base. However, the 21st century sees Lindisfarne return to form with a classic six-piece line up of long-time members fronted by original founder-member Rod Clements on vocals, mandolin, fiddle and slide guitar. Omid Djalili: Schmuck For A Night
Mark Morriss at The Underground
Ranging from comedy on Nelson Mandela, Boris Johnson, Hollywood and even himself, nothing is sacred in this schmuck’s borderline genius rendition.
Morriss fronted the Bluetones over a successful and fruitful 15 year period, scoring 14 top ten singles and three top ten albums, whilst touring the UK, Europe and Japan, before temporarily disbanding in 2011.
In our contemporary society where many a culturally-related joke is called into question, it’s easy to wonder if there are any left that can escape criticism. In Schmuck For A Night, Omid Djalili plays on just that.
Sideways glances from more conservative neighbours won’t be able to stop you almost suffocating with uncontrollable laughter, even as you question the appropriateness of it yourself, before finally making the decision to surrender to Djalili’s outrageous wit. Prepare yourself for a wonderful hour of humour from the Fatboy of comedy, the unique and the uncategorisable Omid Djalili.
Mark Morriss, singer from seminal 90s band The Bluetones, joins us for a special one-off solo performance of his work and will be supported by some very special guests including Sol Gravy.
Since then he has toured as a solo artist and produced theme and chapter music for the audio versions of David Walliams’ successful series of children’s books. His latest solo release is set for April 2017, coinciding with a nationwide tour that brings him to Bradford on 24 February. Friday 24 February, The Underground, Duke Street, Bradford
