Fix it at the Repair by Paul Barratt

Consume - verb (used with object), consumed, consuming.

1. to destroy or expend by use; use up. 2. to eat or drink up; devour.

3. to destroy, as by decomposition or burning: 4. to spend (money, time, etc.) wastefully. 5. to absorb; engross:

6. to undergo destruction; waste away. 7. to use or use up consumer goods.

Welcome to consumer society. A few decades ago we’d have rented the telly or washing machine and then have a repairman come and fix them when they conked out. A busted hoover would be dropped off at the local repair shop and broken furniture would be reglued or recovered. Nowadays things that don’t work are more often than not just taken to the tip. The result is a throwaway society with over 26 million tonnes of rubbish generated by UK households every year. While the council is investing heavily in recycling, the sad fact is that less than 40% of Bradford’s rubbish was recycled in 2015-16 (DEFRA), so most of what we throw away is truly a waste. But there’s more to this problem than just being wasteful - why do we feel so unable to fix this stuff? Is it really that hard? While buying something might give us a certain satisfaction, isn’t opening it up, figuring it out and fixing it even more satisfying? The trouble is most of us don’t feel confident fixing things. While most electrical items, for example, are full of cheap, generic and easily replaced parts, few of us feel equipped to roll up our sleeves and work out how to do it.

Now Repair Cafés are appearing to answer this problem. Local people with some handy skills and a few tools meet up with owners of broken stuff and together they work out how to fix it. It’s a simple, sociable antidote to throwaway culture, returning to an ageold tradition of skill sharing and helping your neighbour. For free. The Repair Cafe Foundation launched in 2009 to support the idea, and there are now over 1,250 Repair Cafés across the world. Shipley Repair Café announced itself in late 2016 and a first meeting at the Kirkgate Centre brought together local people with an amazing range of skills in electronics, tailoring, woodwork, textiles, health and safety, computers, plumbing and audio. Others were keen to get involved just to see the idea get off the ground, having no particular ‘fixing’ skills, but able to organise the day, set things up, make a great cup of tea and help with publicity. Funding has been a problem – especially having the right tools for the job – and so far the Repair Cafe has had to make do with whatever volunteers could bring in themselves. The Co-op has valiantly stepped in and has so far pledged over £620 towards equipment. Local members of

the Co-op are boosting this by adopting the Repair Cafe’s host, the Kirkgate Centre, as their good cause. Despite the financial challenges, the Shipley Repair Cafe has been able to repair most things that have turned up. It’s surprising how much isn’t really all that broken, but just needed a fresh pair of eyes or a little knowhow to get it going again. Other items have taken a lot more investigation, pulling apart, the odd solder and putting back together. What has most impressed people has been circuit board diagnostics. Several volunteers can ‘read’ circuit boards, and understand the purpose of all those tiny components soldered onto green boards. The Kirkgate Centre’s own disco lights had developed a fault and the Centre was faced with a costly repair. After some probing with a multimeter the diagnosis was clear: ‘You’ll be needing an LM317 voltage regulator,’ we were told, as a tiny black nodule on the circuit board was pointed out. The total cost of repair? £4.75. Everyone is welcome to come along with their broken stuff and get involved or just hang out for the fun of it. It’s free of charge, although donations are very welcome. The volunteers make it clear that there’s no guarantee before or after something is fixed, and it’s all at your own risk, which means you may end up taking home a box of bits, but isn’t that half the fun?

10 Community Feature

The Shipley Repair Café runs 10:30am to 12:30pm at the Kirkgate Centre on the second Saturday of the month. The centre’s café is also open for drinks, snacks or lunch. If you’re bringing broken stuff, please let us know in advance via social media or email shipleyrepaircafe@kirkgatecentre.org.uk

The 136 Bingley Show th

by Julia Lister

Preparations are well under way for the 136th Bingley Show, to be staged in the town’s Myrtle Park and organised by the Airedale Agricultural Society, with this year’s event on Saturday 22 July. Bingley Show is one of the largest oneday shows in the North of England, with attendances of up to 14,000 people. Visitors can enjoy traditional agricultural exhibits along with attractions such as the Honda Freestyle Motocross Team, the Bold Dog Lings. The Bold Dog team will wow crowds as they perform jumps of up to 75ft and mid-air tricks - definitely a must-see. And the Sheep Show returns to Bingley to teach visitors about the many sheep breeds in the UK.

14 Preview Feature

Those with a competitive streak can enter the wide range of competitive classes held on the day. These range from cattle and sheep classes through to poultry, cavies, handicrafts and horticulture.

A revised show layout for 2017 includes a new larger Members’ Marquee in the bottom meadow alongside the main ring. It will allow members access to a private bar, luxury toilets, ringside seating and tables and lunch is included. This promises to be the perfect location from which to enjoy the show’s programme of main ring attractions and the surrounding backdrop of Myrtle Park.

Those who like competition of a more strenuous nature can take part in the Bingley Harriers 10km Race, which starts from the main show ring. The cattle and sheep to be shown will come from across the North of England and will be in peak condition, many having recently returned from the Great Yorkshire Show in Harrogate. Hopes are high that both the quality and quantity of livestock of recent years will be repeated in 2017. The show jumping events are one of the day’s major attractions and take place in the main ring throughout the day. The event attracts some of the sport’s top riders and their horses, as well as local competitors looking to compete at one of the region’s most popular shows. The show jumping begins around 8.30am, and returns later in the afternoon for the action-packed Accumulator. Always a crowd pleaser and a good reason to both arrive early in the day and enjoy the early evening in the glorious amphitheatre of Myrtle Park.

The organising committee are working hard to put on another top class event and aim to offer a day for the whole family to enjoy. So whether you wish to enjoy the many exhibits or be wowed by the main ring attractions, shop at the unique trade stands or take part in the 10km race, make sure you get your ticket and head to Myrtle Park for a great family day out in Bingley.

Shipley Wayzgoose by Nick Loaring

“A Wayz…what…??” is usually the response you get when you mention the word Wayzgoose. It’s such an unusual word, but if you were involved in the printing trade ‘in the olden days’ it would have been a familiar term. Over time the meaning has changed somewhat but it has traditionally centred around St Bartholomew’s Day, 24 August, which marked the end of summer and the start of the season of working by candlelight - ink, paper and fire…nothing can go wrong with that…right? A Wayzgoose was an entertainment given by the master printer for his workmen, and this later came to mean an outing or annual holiday given by the print works owners for the staff. Not something you hear of much these days in any trade or business. It can also literally mean a Printers’ Party - food, drinks and printing at a chosen press. Fast forward to the present day and a Wayzgoose for us here in Shipley is a gathering of printers from across the UK involved with letterpress printing. This type of printing has been in use for over 500 years, ever since some bright spark in Germany called Gutenberg invented movable type - individual letters cast from molten lead that could be assembled by hand into words, sentences, paragraphs, newspapers and.. books.

There’s a rich and varied history of printing in and around Yorkshire and by 1911 it was the fourth largest employer in Leeds, with over 8,000 people in the trade. In Bradford in 1904 Lund Humphries installed the first Monotype casting machines to enable the composition of type for printing the much lauded Penrose annual, as well as books by leading artists Paul Nash and Henry Moore. The Wharfedale Stop Cylinder press that dominated world markets was manufactured in Otley and up to 3,000 people were employed by the company by 1911. In 1965 an order for 28 machines was placed to enable the printing of the Quran in Pakistan. DeLittle of York, well respected wooden type manufacturers, only ceased trading in the late 1990s. The daddy of them all was Stephenson Blake & Co, who operated out of Sheffield for over 200 years. These companies operated in a time when things were built to last, and thankfully many of their legacies live on in print-shops across the UK - and the world - enabling a generation of newcomers to get their hands dirty and get involved. So it’s the book that we aim to celebrate in our gathering of printers - the power of the written word, beautifully printed in small or large volumes encased in luxuriant bindings that will please and tantalise the eyes and the soul. Letterpress printing has seen

our stallholders and maybe go home with a printing press or two to start you off on your inky journey.

It’s in this context that we’re bringing together some of the finest presses across the land for one day in the beautiful surroundings of Shipley’s one and only Kirkgate Centre, to talk, breathe, and smell the printed goodness, and hopefully to tempt some hard earned cash from your pocket to purchase some finely printed works.

On sale will be posters, books, papers, chap books, postcards, cards, new and secondhand metal type, ephemera, inks, prints and much more. If you were ever involved in the printing trade come on down and have a brew, we’d love to meet you.

We’ll have two type foundries present on the day so there’ll be ample opportunity to stock up on some of the finest types the UK has to offer. And if you’re looking to get into printing in your garage / shed / or on your kitchen table, Shipley’s Wayzgoose is an ideal opportunity to delve into the wild - and quite frankly, crazy - world of letterpress printing, so you could come along and quiz

Headliners revealed for Literature Festival

From Game of Thrones to cricket, via William Blake, Bradford Literature Festival returns with a programme of events like no other. by Georgina Lennon

Bradford Literature Festival, in association with Provident Financial Group, has announced 2017’s new, exciting events and literary greats to its 2017 programme. The now iconic festival, held for ten days from 30 June to 9 July, considers literature in its broadest possible sense, celebrating the wonderful world of words that connects everything from poetry to music, fiction to science, theatre to sport. This year’s guests include literary greats Jeanette Winterson and Ben Okri, worldrenowned poets Jackie Kay and Linton Kwesi-Johnson, feminist Germaine Greer and historian and politician Shashi Tharoor. There’ll also be a trio of events on Yorkshire cricket, held in association with The Cricketer Magazine, Tiff Needell, host of Top Gear and Fifth Gear, joins the festival for a look into the world of Formula One, and there’ll be a fittingly adult celebration of Harry Potter’s 20th birthday - Potter’s Potions, a bespoke cocktail-making class

in the dungeonesque setting of Bradford’s stunning Sunbridge Wells. At the Bradford Literature Festival there’s something for everyone. Fans of film and theatre will be thrilled by this year’s programme. With films as diverse and wide ranging as Holy Terrors, which brings to life the macabre tales of Welsh writer Arthur Machen, and the highly controversial Lipstick Under My Burka, banned in India for being ‘too lady orientated’, with its scenes of feminist rebellion, there’s plenty to keep

cinema lovers entertained. There’ll also be a series of exceptional theatre productions - Bradford-born Asif Khan brings his debut play Combustion, a fabulously comic take on young British Muslim lives in the north of England, and celebrated poet Lemn Sissay will perform his internationally acclaimed Something Dark, recently added to the national syllabus.

For parents of teenagers, the festival’s Young Adult strand will come as a welcome relief. Radio 1 DJ and fashion stylist Gemma Cairney joins this year’s A-list line-up for a frank discussion on the highs and lows of growing up, king of controversy and YA author Melvyn Burgess, whose novel Junk defined a decade, will join Glamour columnist and LGBT activist Juno Dawson to discuss The Books They Don’t Want You To Read, and there’ll be interactive workshops on everything from Manga drawing to opinion writing to performance poetry. The full programme of events is now available via the festival website, including a digital version of the festival brochure, and with events already selling out, literature lovers are encouraged to buy tickets now to avoid disappointment! Panto season comes early, thanks to Shipley Little Theatre by Mike Farren

It was a lovely late spring weekend, with balmy temperatures, May blossom on the trees and light in the sky until late at night, but in the Kirkgate Centre it was Christmas. In the pantomime festival of misrule, gender roles were reversed, small children screamed their disagreement with any actor who ventured to suggest that, “Oh, yes it is!” and the adults groaned at jokes that would shame any Christmas cracker. If the first production by Shipley Little Theatre is anything to go by, things are going to be done a little differently (a panto in May? drama in the Kirkgate Centre?), but there’ll be a strong local flavour, both on stage and in the audience, and popular appeal will be very much to the fore. Well over 100 people attended the three panto performances. Theatre had taken something of a back seat in Shipley and Saltaire until the last few years. Hattie Townsend’s shows at the Saltaire Festival and elsewhere have been joined by Shakespeare in the Park and improv troupe 28 Review Feature

SASIT, but there has been no group doing year-round productions… until now! Formed in the wake of last year’s Saltaire Shakespeare in the Park production of Much Ado About Nothing, Shipley Little Theatre (SLT) has been holding weekly workshops at the Kirkgate Centre since last September. The intention is provide community-based theatre in and for Shipley. Appropriately for this aim, the first SLT production has been a newly-written panto script, Pantoland’s Got Talent, directed by its author, local resident and mother of two Tina Palomar, who also took the role of Aladdin. Tina tells me that she had the idea for a talent show among the panto characters around five years ago. “I’ve been trying, unsuccessfully, to get it produced since. It’s changed a lot in the meantime, but I’m amazed and honoured that it’s finally made it to the stage, and I’m so proud of the success that SLT have made of it.” Of course part of the art of panto is the rapport with the audience and especially

the children (please don’t shout, “Oh no it isn’t”!). The production’s Widow Twanky, Keith Lander, picked this out as part of the delight of acting in this form. “It’s wonderful to get that immediate feedback,” he tells me. A trained actor and drama teacher, playing a pantomime dame has been on his bucket list for years. The show is built on the relationship between Cinderella and Prince Charming, not exactly living happily ever following their marriage. As the wicked stepmother has mysteriously disappeared, the ugly sisters have come to share the marital home, and are just as lazy and demanding as ever. Panto is always subversive, but support worker Helen JeffreyBourne, playing Cinderella, enjoyed the way that even the conventions of the form itself are subverted. “Panto heroines like Cinderella are often played as slight and petite. This is a Cinderella who has been married for a while and properly fed for the first time in her life. It’s great to have a slightly more voluptuous version.”

In her other role, as SLT’s treasurer, Helen is also delighted that the production’s success has established the group on a firm financial footing, able to contemplate further productions. To continue the local theme, the next production will be Making Light, written by Saltaire’s bard Eddie Lawler. This play, celebrating the tercentenary of Blind Jack Metcalf, will open at the Saltaire Festival, before a short tour of West Yorkshire. Further ahead, the plans are to blend further locally written material with more classic material – perhaps a production of Waiting For Godot or a similar small production. However Tuesday workshops at 7pm in the Kirkgate Centre will remain the heart of the group. It’s a diverse, open, welcoming group, drawn from a wide range of backgrounds, and it’s all on a pay-as-you-feel basis, so why not come along and give it a try? Alpaca - a celebration of food, art, music and community by Dan Carroll

Alpaca took place at the Shared Space at Merchant Quay Shipley and brought together artists, musicians and food lovers from across Bradford. It was a veritable feast of tastes, colours, sights and sounds with the aim of giving a platform to local artists and photographers, to make new contacts and to share their work. It was a real community effort, with food provided by Dandelion Cafe, and tasty snacks from Edward Street Bakery. Real ale and ciders were brought down from the Triangle in Shipley. Musicians came from across the district and performed a sonic rainbow of styles and genres, ranging from live modular performances from Demon Glare, Owl Mask and Mark Lerman, to goth electro-

pop by They Call Him Zone, grungetinged rock courtesy of Astral Trip and live house music from Hamzahamza. After the live music DJs took control, spinning a selection of disco, house and techno that kept the dancefloor going until the very end. The event illustrated just how the independent scene in Shipley and Saltaire is thriving. It was also a great reminder of how like-minded people can come together and organise an event for all the community to enjoy. Plans for the Summer Edition are in motion, so watch this space.

On the cover... Sven Shaw by Haigh Simpson

How did you get into illustration and when did it become a career for you?

Is there a project or piece of work you’re particularly proud of ?

I’ve enjoyed drawing since I was a child and just never stopped really. I always knew I wanted to get into the creative industries so I’ve been doing design and illustration jobs since I left university in 2005. But last year I thought I’d finally take the plunge and work part time as a freelance illustrator.

I produced a map of Europe with every country drawn as its national symbol. So England is a lion, France is a rooster, Russia is a bear and so on, for every country in Europe. It involved a lot of research and creativity to fit the illustrations to the shape of the countries but I was really pleased with the end result.

How would you describe your style and how did it develop?

What’s your relationship with Saltaire?

I would describe my style as ‘cluttered fun’. I used to love looking at the minute detail in children’s books by Martin Handford and Anthony Browne, so I want to create illustrations that are equally absorbing. I think art should be something you can stare at for hours, so I try to add in as much detail as possible, as well as a lot of humour.

I was born in Bradford so I grew up visiting Saltaire and Shipley Glen. It’s always felt like a special place to me, so now I live and work from here. I think it’s a great location for artists too.

What was the idea behind your cover illustration?

I’m just adding the finishing touches to a huge illustration of Salt’s Mill, where every window is occupied by a famous Yorkshire person. So that’s 219 hand drawn characters, but still a mere fraction of the great figures produced by this county!

Without alpacas, Saltaire would probably not exist and their image can be seen all around the village. So I made this cover in recognition of their importance to Saltaire. Plus I thought it would be amusing to cram a few dozen alpacas onto an A5 page.

Do you have any interesting projects on the go at the moment?

Hockney, heritage and happy times for all by Claire Gibbons

2017 is a big year for one of Bradford’s most famous sons and Saltaire Festival is joining in the celebrations in a big way. David Hockney turns 80 in July and the Silver family are honouring Hockney’s life and works with a birthday exhibition in Salts Mill, which will be running across the 10 days of the Festival in September. Schools are also getting involved with their own artwork in the style of Hockney and celebrating all things ‘birthday’. The new Hockney exhibition underpins a strong visual arts strand across Saltaire Festival this year, which starts with the Open Gardens weekend on Saturday 9 and Sunday 10 September. Village residents will be opening their yards, gardens and allotments to the general public, exhibiting professional sculptures from local and national artists, specifically chosen for each different space. Following on from the success of previous years there’ll also be Pop Up houses across the village featuring music, food, stalls and entertainment across the opening weekend. Visitors can guide themselves around the village with the Open Gardens and Sculpture Trail leaflet and learn about the history of each house and its residents as they go. 38 Community Feature

The Festival has an artist in residence this year - renowned pencil and mixed media artist Kay Andrews. Kay will be bringing her unique style to the Festival with painting workshops and a new piece of work based on the early days of Saltaire, and to celebrate 150 years of worship in the village. Through her work, Kay will be showing how she makes her pencil ‘sing’ as she coaxes an image out of a blank piece of paper. And as ever, there is much more happening right across the village over the ten days of the Festival, not least the annual comedy night on Wednesday 13 September at Caroline Street Social Club - guaranteed to sell out yet again. Ros Garside, chair of Saltaire Festival, and the teams of volunteers have been busy curating a packed programme to suit all ages and tastes and to celebrate the uniqueness of Saltaire village. “There’s so much going on in Saltaire all year round now, and Saltaire Festival is the annual event to celebrate the history and heritage of the village itself, as well as showcase the best in music, art, food and drink from the local area and beyond,” said Ros. “It’s an opportunity to really show-off the village in all its Victorian glory, and show the many thousands of visitors why Saltaire is so special, and for the residents to share their sense of pride in the area.”

Festival a success, as well as encouraging donations from the general public who come along each year and enjoy the free entertainment. “If every visitor gave £1 each year to the Festival we could guarantee a full programme of events without the worry of fundraising as we do now,” Ros added. “The Festival is a registered charity and everyone involved is a volunteer – everyone giving their time and expertise for free. The general public can help by donating through our JustGiving page and through the new charity collection boxes across the village.” The Festival Guide will be launched in July and visitors will be able to see the full list of events and activities on the website as well in the printed version of the Guide, available across the village and beyond. So, for now, save the dates, keep your eyes on the social media channels, visit the website for information as it happens and give a pound or two towards the Festival funds. Saltaire Festival – 8 to 17 September 2017.

The Festival is supported by Bradford Council who organise the markets on Exhibition Road each year, but other than that there’s no permanent funding in place. Each year the volunteer teams work hard to generate the £60,000 or so needed to put on such a wide range of events and activities for all ages, across the whole cultural, historical and artistic spectrum – and to keep the vast majority of events free for all. This is no mean feat and the Festival team are still on the look-out for sponsors to help make this year’s Community Feature 39

TLR Presents: Hamilton Loomis

Loomis and crew shine on stage, proving his music is best experienced in person where one can see and hear its splendour. Described by Blues Blast Magazine as ‘a non-stop turbo of power, one minute moving from side to side of the stage, and then taking on his horn player in a headcutting contest on the apron of the stage the next minute’. Born and raised in Galveston, Texas, Loomis is the son of musician parents who listened to blues, rock and soul. Music ran in his veins and, with instruments readily available around the house, he picked up drums, piano, guitar and harmonica, honing his multiinstrumental talent and performing regularly as part of his family’s doo-wop group. Now Loomis is set to bring his energy and passion to Saltaire as he performs at The Live Room.

Stuart Lee - Content Provider

After four years writing and performing his TV show, Stewart Lee’s Comedy Vehicle, Content Provider is Stewart’s first brand new full-length show since the award-winning Carpet Remnant World. Lee returns to the stage with a 90-minute cultured show with no limits or censorship. It’s pure stand-up comedy. Navigating topics of the moment like Brexit and Donald Trump with punchy, vulgar witticism and a mixture of deconstructed jokes and dry soliloquies, Lee’s show transcends the dreariness of current politics with watertight comedy. Favourite place to eat / drink in and around Saltaire? We’re a bit spoiled for choice, aren’t we? The Salts Mill Cafe is real favourite to take friends and family to, and I’m glad to hear the Half Moon Cafe is open again. Lovely food and the other half gets to watch cricket! As I’m totally won over by their stone baked pizzas, my favourite place though is the Hop.

Local event you couldn’t live without? I’ve a lot of affection for the Saltaire Arts Trail. I started off exhibiting there when I used to work with and teach cyanotype photography, and then coordinated the event in 2012. The open houses aspect lifts it above many other arts events and gives it a real friendliness, and they attract fantastic designers and makers.

Local business you admire? There’s quite a few, that’s one of the great things about Saltaire! The calibre of folk musicians that Saltaire Live bring to Victoria Hall is a real treat to have on the doorstep. I’ve also loved watching the evolution of Caroline Brown’s Rose & Brown business, from the vintage shop on Victoria Road, to the popular fairs held around the village and further beyond - and a wonderful woman too.
