Hullabaloo comes to Shipley
The popularly-known Connexion at 41 Westgate, Shipley is now set to become Hullabaloo, a thriving independent craft beer and street food venue. Jimmy Greenwood is the proprietor, and he has lived in Shipley and worked in bars and restaurants throughout his life. He hopes he can bring something a little different to Hullabaloo. There’ll be a superb range of craft ales, beers, wines and signature cocktails, with an eclectic street food style menu packed with irresistible flavours. The street food vibe will be continually changing and inspired by Caribbean and South American flavours. Jimmy aims to create a vibrant laid-back drinking and eating destination where you can come and hang out with friends for a few drinks and enjoy taster bites.

Volunteers support Shipley Glen Tramway After a successful open day, volunteers have come forward to support the UK’s oldest funicular railway.
Volunteer numbers slumped in recent years, and organisers feared the historic attraction was in danger of having to close some weekends. The museum had a grand reopening in July, following a £30,000 refurbishment involving a new roof and new people have now come forward to volunteer their time. Inside the museum, displays tell the history of the tramway. An educational area will also form part of the museum as the attraction aims to host more school trips, hoping to garner more interest in the tramway that has been open since 1895.

Saltaire Festival is go! by Claire Gibbons
The sculptors are creating amazing works of arts, the performers are booked and rehearsing, the food and drink stalls are preparing their wares, and the villagers are opening up their pop-up houses and gardens – all ready for another fabulous 10 days of Saltaire Festival fun, 8 to 17 September. The Festival programme was officially launched on 21 July in Salts Mill, at an event hosted by Maggie Silver. Guests were given a sneak preview of the full programme 10 Preview Feature
of events and activities and this is now available for all to see, both online and in local outlets. The shape of the Festival follows the popular pattern of previous years, opening with amazing sculptures on show in the Open Gardens across the village, plus pop-up events and stalls, on Saturday 9 and Sunday 10 September. Travel around the world at this year’s pop-ups, with Mexican food (including breakfast’s), a taste of Portugal and Spanish tapas, or stay closer
to home with coffee and cakes, cupcakes and collectables, cards and coasters, vintage clothes and homeware, handmade soaps, a gin experience, Yardfest, miniRecord Club appearances, and a not-to-bemissed piano singalong. The Airedale branch of the Embroiderers’ Guild will be exhibiting their textile art across the opening weekend at the United Reform Church. Their exhibition showcases the work of their members, including the Young Embroiderers, and follows on from their Silver Anniversary exhibition in 2016. Jackie Mungovin from the Guild is hoping that the exhibition will attract some new members, “We’re excited to be taking part in the Festival and see it as a great opportunity to demonstrate the work of Airedale Embroiderers’ Guild and the wide range of textile and stitched art we embrace. We’re also hoping that we’ll find some new members to join us at the same time.” The Rainbow Morris dancers, who dance in the North West tradition, will be entertaining the crowds on the opening Sunday. Kay
Morris of the Rainbow group has seen the Festival go from strength to strength over the last 15 years, “I attended the first brainstorming session in one of the organiser’s houses in Saltaire Village prior to the very first Festival and I have enjoyed seeing the event grow from its humble beginnings to what it is today. “Our Day of Dance at the Festival is always very special to me. I particularly enjoy the mass dance at the end of the day, when Rainbow members and invited teams line-up down the drive of the United Reform Church and perform the Plymouth Reel, with all the musicians playing together on the church steps. I usually have a lump in my throat at this point!” During the week there’s a whole host of events and activities right across the village, including the children’s art exhibition celebrating Hockney’s 80th birthday, and The Strangest Battle: A Suffragette Tea Party, when you can spend an afternoon back in the Saltaire of 1908 for an entertainment of talk and song to honour the fight for women’s rights in West Preview Feature 11
Yorkshire, accompanied by a delicious Edwardian-style afternoon tea created by Jeanette’s Cakery. Eddie Lawler will be premiering his new play, performed by actors from Shipley Little Theatre, “Making Light celebrates the life of a Yorkshireman who made light of blindness and is 300 years old this year. It’s Jack Metcalf meets Mother Shipton in a rollicking mix of history and mystery. And I’m thrilled that Shipley Little Theatre will be taking the play on tour after the Festival,” Eddie said. Music, food and all round good fun dominate the closing weekend and visitors and villagers alike can get a unique perspective on Saltaire and its history thanks to the fabulous Miss Inform and her merry band of Miss Informants. Jenny Wilson of Irregular Arts is behind Miss Inform, and proud to bring some new performers to the Festival this year, “It’s great to be able to present our work at the Festival, amongst the communities we work with and for, and in the town we call home. We’ve been working with groups including Staying Put (a charity that works with survivors of domestic abuse), as well as other local people and women’s groups alongside our professional team. Many of our performers have never done anything like this before and it will be a massive personal challenge and opportunity for them - a prestigious platform they can say they took part in.” A full programme of bands will entertain the crowds in Roberts Park on 16 and 17 September. There’ll be plenty to feast on in the form of wood-fired pizzas, sizzling sausages, a selection of street food including veggie options, sweet treats, plus delicious curries and sauces from local restaurant and the Festival’s main sponsor, Aagrah, as well as the ever-popular street market along Exhibition Road. Alongside 12 Preview Feature
the tasty food there’ll be a number of bars serving many real ales, lagers, ciders, and soft drinks for everyone to enjoy in the late summer sunshine. Festival Director Ros Garside can’t wait to see the village packed with visitors and residents in September, “As ever, we’ve launched a programme full of events and activities to suit all tastes. Thanks to our sponsors and supporters most events are free and we aim to keep it this way for future Festivals. We’ve launched a new Pound Per Person campaign, encouraging visitors to donate just £1 each time they attend a free event, either in person or through our JustGiving site. That’s all we need to keep future Festivals as free as possible for all. “We’re also on the lookout for around 60 volunteers to help staff events over the ten days. We just ask for two hours of people’s time to keep events safe and enjoyable for all. Why not team up with a friend and play your part in making the Festival great!” So, pop the dates in your diary and visit the website for the full programme of events, sign up to the Festival newsletter, and volunteer with or donate to the Festival. www.saltairefestival.co.uk

Making Light -
at Saltaire Festival and beyond by Eddie Lawler
Amongst my creative projects in recent years have been three Yorkshirebased musicals, two of which featured in Saltaire Festivals. The first - Saltairy Tales - was performed twice by members of the Saltaire Community, with an illustrated book-version that ticks over in the Mill bookshop, and the second was Bells, a Brontë musical performed by local youngsters. Full-length musicals are not the easiest things to launch. My current topic is the Knaresborough-born Blind Jack Metcalf, an 18th century lad of very modest background, struck blind by smallpox at the age of six. He made light of his disability, becoming a top-class fiddler for the toffs taking the waters at Harrogate Spa, and a sought-after winter entertainer in the houses of northern aristocracy. He went on, via numerous adventures, to become a pioneer road-builder whose work influenced the better-known Telford and Macadam. He’s honoured today with a beautiful seated statue by local sculptor Barbara Asquith in Knaresborough Market Place, where you can sit and ‘chat’ with him. Through this statue and the pub nearby which now bears his name, he has become an icon for Knaresborough folk, along with Mother Shipton down by the River Nidd. Ask Yorkshire folk outside of Knaresborough 16 Preview Feature
who Mother Shipton is, and you’re bound to get an answer of sorts. The same question about Blind Jack has a 90% chance of being received with a shrug of the shoulders, and I’ve been aching for years to tell people about this amazing character who lived on our doorstep. He surveyed and built 180 miles of local roads, including difficult Pennine terrain. We use them without acknowledging their creator. You’ll find an answer to both of those “Who is....?” questions in my new play, Making Light, which isn’t a musical (though it has music!) and is marketed as ‘a rollicking mix of mystery and history’. Mother Shipton has been ‘signed up’ to perform with Jack and others to explore his life. The cast and director come from Shipley Little Theatre, founded less than a year ago, and this is their first touring venture. We premiere at Saltaire Festival on Thursday 14 September

at the Caroline Club, and go on to five other venues in the locality - including Knaresborough of course. The realisation of this project is indeed timely, 2017 being the 300th anniversary of Jack’s birth. I’m a member of the Script Yorkshire group of writers, through which I found a fellow Metcalf fan and musician called Tim Hunter in Knaresborough. Together we’ll present some of our differing musical efforts inspired by Jack on his birthday, Tuesday 15 August, at the Orb in Knaresborough at 7.30pm. It’s part of the town’s FEVA Festival, which includes other tributes to Jack. I was privileged very recently to attend an event where Jack’s fiddle was returned to its home town, where it will be on long loan to Knaresborough Museum. It had been in Hertfordshire with a sixth generation of descendants who have had it restored in London, and they tell a typical tale about it. Jack was living and working in the Stockport area towards the end of his career as civil
engineer, and is said to have taken a bet that he could ride a horse and play fiddle at the same time. He was thrown, lost the bet and damaged the fiddle. When opened up earlier this year, the fiddle revealed that it had been repaired in Prestbury in the 1820s. Since then it was damaged by woodworm and became a silent plaything for noisy kids. It can now be played again in Knaresborough Museum by competent players and the London restorer asserts ‘It needs playing!’ Jack is also finally being acknowledged and honoured as a roadbuilder. The section of the A658 southern bypass between A61 Buttersyke Bar roundabout and the A661 Kestrel roundabout outside of Harrogate has been named John Metcalf Way and the signs are now in place. Come and see the play and help bring Blind Jack back from the shadow! Tickets are £8 and available via the Saltaire Festival website.

Yoga in the Park by Georgia Higgins After practising yoga for fourteen years and teaching it in Goa, Heather is now sharing her knowledge and passion for the discipline in Saltaire. She set up the successful yoga studio Heather Yoga at Merchants Quay over three years ago. After doing one-off outdoor sessions in Roberts Park she received rave reviews and calls for more of the same. So, for the summer months she’s been running more hugely popular outdoor workshop sessions - Run & Yoga on Tuesday evenings and Yoga & Meditation fortnightly on Sunday mornings. Run & Yoga involves a short yoga warmup, a 3km run and a longer yoga sequence post-run. Perfect for both running beginners and more seasoned runners who want to mix up their workouts. But most popular is Yoga & Meditation in the Park which attracts a large crowd of men and women of all ages and varying levels of yoga experience. It’s an invigorating and enjoyable way to start a Sunday. Kicking off the series on International Yoga Day, Heather ran a charity event to raise money for Children of Syria, which raised £750 - a great event for a good cause, with around 80 people enjoying yoga outside in the greenery. Heather started practising yoga fourteen years ago and began teaching six years ago after a spending four months in India.
She did her teacher training course at a school in Goa, staying afterwards to teach classes, and returned regularly to teach at the school whilst completing the next level of teaching training. It was while in the Himalayas that Heather decided to return to the area where she was brought up and set up a yoga studio. The beginnings were humble - she was hiring some rooms, mats and props to teach a few classes a week. Now the studio has grown to become a dedicated yoga space with a variety of classes, workshops and other teachers. Heather is happy to have returned to Saltaire and loves the area. She said, “I remember passing Salts Mill on the way to school when it was still derelict and abandoned. The mill is stunning now and I love dropping in to see the Hockney paintings. Saltaire blossomed and bloomed in my absence and continues to flourish. I’m so proud it has been designated a World Heritage site. “I like the richness of the history, the backdrop of the moors with easy access to countryside and city life. I love being able to run in nature within five minutes of getting outside.” There will be two more summer Yoga and Meditation in the Park workshops on 6 and 20 August, 10-11am. The Cellar Trust
by Georgia Higgins
The Cellar Trust is a proudly local charity, supporting people with mental health difficulties since the 1980s. One year on from opening their new Haven crisis centre, the Trust continues to be a charity making a real difference to those who need it within the community Based between Saltaire and Shipley, the Cellar Trust used to be the Cellar Project and started from humble beginnings. A social worker realised there was little or no support helping people with mental health problems get back into employment, and workshops were started to help rehabilitation. These sessions - woodwork, textiles and painting took place in the cellar of a Victorian house being used as a group home for people recently discharged from hospital. The charity has maintained strong links to its roots throughout the years. Their main aim helping people with mental health problems return or get into work - remains and they continue to provide workshops to help personal development. Woodwork is still one of the Skill Shops the Trust runs, alongside horticulture, catering and retail. The workshops offer a range of benefits, from therapeutic hands-on activity to more vocational training. The workshops promote confidence and independence as well as employable skills. Most beneficial are
22 Community Feature
opportunities to meet supportive people - both staff and peers who have been in a similar situation. The Trust also uses the Skill Shops as a source of income. Clients work at their Shipley town centre charity shop, or as kitchen staff in the Cellar Trust cafĂŠ. Open five days a week, the cafe serves barista coffee and a selection of homemade food and cakes, plus seasonal specials. They also sell jars of homemade jams, marmalades and chutneys. Similarly the wood shop sell their finished products, ranging from Christmas tree decorations to kitchenware to picnic benches commissioned by local businesses. The horticulture Skill Shop at the on-site allotment is a firm favourite. Clients and volunteers come rain or shine to do some gardening, although on the wetter days the session may involve many cups of tea and hiding from the rain in the shed! In the last 18 months, the group of volunteers and clients have worked hard to build everything from scratch, including the shed,
the flower beds and the greenhouse tents. Keeping it economical, food produce from the allotment is then used in the café and flowers are sold. As well as learning skills, the garden sessions are a friendly space and a chance to meet others. Michael, with his background of mental health difficulties, comes to work in the garden regularly. Talking about his time at the Cellar Trust, he said, “It’s a lovely, safe atmosphere and we enjoy coming here. There are people from all different backgrounds but we come together and get along really well.” The gardeners work once a week on the gardens at Cliffe Castle in Keighley, something they all really enjoy. Moreover, a partnership with Shipley College has helped many to go on and achieve a horticulture qualification. College training and work
placements are an important stepping stone towards full-time employment, as they help to gain experience, skills and confidence. In recent years the Cellar Trust has modernised and expanded as well, preferring a preventative method and helping before someone has reached a crisis point. Last August the Trust opened Haven, their centre available to those in mental distress 365 days a year. In partnership with the NHS, the centre is a much more approachable alternative to A&E. One successful year on, they expect up to 1,000 people will use the facility in the second year. The centre offers one-on-one support, drop in sessions and peer support from those who have experienced it all before, plus a social worker on duty every day to advise and support other aspects of their life..
Community Feature 23
Vital to the Trust’s aims is teaching people self-care techniques and coping strategies so they can be more independent. A partnership with My Wellbeing College, a free NHS service, offers support for everyday mental health difficulties. They also offer a range of educational courses for employers to promote understanding and support of mental health in the workplace. The Trust has widened its profile over the last few years and they’re now Charity of the Year for Tong’s Garden Centre. But they also maintain a local spirit, getting involved with the Saltaire Festival and the Arts Trail. Andrew McCarthy, the head of Fundraising and Development at the Trust, emphasised this, “We want to continue to make links in the community and encourage local people
24 Community Feature
and businesses to get involved in various ways, from visiting the café to buying woodwork products to providing work placements.” The annual cost of delivering their lifechanging work is £750,000. They receive some funding from the NHS but as an independent charity they still rely on volunteers, donations and fundraising to make ends meet. If you would like more information on the Cellar Trust or to donate please go to www.thecellartrust.org

How did you get into illustration?
It kinda just happened, it wasn’t as forced as when I learnt to animate. I was always encouraged to create and make things as a child. Growing up, I found myself sat in the corner of a room drawing whilst my friends would be playing Halo or something. I think these are the years where I developed my style. Explain the idea behind the cover design?
Roberts Park is such an iconic part of Saltaire and the occasional mass gatherings that happen there inspired me to attempt to capture the energy and diversity that occurs there. Are there any projects you are particularly proud of?
There are projects that I prefer to others but proud is too strong of a word. I’m proud of myself for walking against the wind but my work is on an ever improving journey. One day when I stop I’ll look back and be proud of it all. What’s your relationship with Saltaire?
Born and bred, Saltaire has been my home and inspiration for 30 years and will continue to be. I remember as a small child been hurled out of Salts Mill for dancing in front of Hockneys paintings and disturbing the silence. My Ma’ complained via post and later, we received a very apologetic one back saying how Hockney would’ve been honoured to have children dancing in front of his art.
Where do your ideas come from?
Some people look at my work and think I must have a screw loose which in a fairness, I may have. As a child my relatives were often bemused (yet, I can imagine slightly worried) by the strange characters and scenes I use to produce. I’m not one for using references, I prefer to take a look at something and then recreate it on paper the way I remember it, I think having a screw loose helps. Describe your perfect working environment.
My perfect working environment would have to be on one of those grey miserable rainy days, sat in front of a big window overlooking some fields. My cat by my side watching the raindrops on the window find their path of least resistance and some mid-volume, nonintrusive tones, (perhaps St. Germain.) And a coffee mug and smokes that occasionally got refilled and handed to me. What do you like to do when you’re not illustrating?
Listen, look, taste and touch things that I haven’t before. For more of Tom’s work visit www. motionbytom.com

Bingley Music Live by Dominique Daly
Bingley’s Myrtle Park is set to host something very special as Bingley Music Festival returns to this leafy setting for another weekend, 1 to 3 September. The Festival, now in its eleventh year, burst onto the circuit back in 2007 and has quickly become one of Yorkshire’s most celebrated outdoor music events. Returning bigger and better than ever, Bingley Music Festival is spread across two stages packed with established and emerging talent. 2017’s line up boasts some heavy-hitting headliners with Welsh legends Manic Street Preachers, the Kaiser Chiefs and The Wombats playing on the main stage across the weekend. Also playing on stage one will be a host of artists, with Pete Doherty, Milburn, Badly Drawn Boy, Feeder, Soul II Soul, British Sea Power, Little Comets, High Tyde and many more gracing Myrtle Park. Headlining the first day of the festival in true rock style are the Manic Street Preachers, on Friday 1 September. Formed in Blackwood in 1986, the founding members
of the band - James Dean Bradfield (lead vocals, lead guitar), Nicky Wire (bass guitar, lyrics) and Sean Moore (drums, percussion) still remain today. First single Suicide Alley was released in 1988, followed by their debut album Generation Terrorists in 1992. The band celebrate the 10-year anniversary of their eighth studio album Send Away The Tigers in May 2017, marking the occasion with a 10 Year Collectors’ Edition, including unheard tracks, never before seen footage and artwork from the band’s own archive. In 2017 Manic Street Preachers announced their return with a string of huge outdoor performances, including a headline set at this year’s Bingley Music Live. Frontman James Dean Bradfield has also spoken
The Manic Street Preachers
about the upcoming release of new material, saying, “It will be nice to feel like a band again.” On Saturday 2 September Myrtle Park will be treated to a show of epic proportions as the wild energy of the Kaiser Chiefs takes over Bingley. Formed in 2003, the band had huge hits with I Predict a Riot and Ruby, which has sold over 461,000 copies. Summer 2016 saw the Chiefs release their sixth studio album Stay Together – the follow up to their #1 album from 2014, Education, Education, Education & War. Frontman Ricky Wilson also recently found popularity as a judge for the hit TV show The Voice. Closing the festival on Sunday 3 September are The Wombats, a band who were at the peak of the noughties British indie-rock explosion. With a knack for smashing out indie dance floor fillers, the Wombats won NME Award for Best Dance Floor Filler in 2008 with Let’s Dance To Joy Division.
Other massive hits such as Kill The Director, Backfire At The Disco and Moving To New York skyrocketed the band’s combined sales to an impressive 300,000. 2017 saw The Wombats announce a 10-year anniversary in celebration of their debut album A Guide To Love, Loss And Desperation with a show at London’s 02 Brixton Academy. The exciting return for the band is accompanied by front man Murphy’s announcement that work is underway for The Wombat’s fourth studio album, scheduled for release at the end of summer 2017. It’s not just the main stage that boasts acts to make it worth getting down to the Park stage two will be showcasing some of the best new and emerging artists from the UK. Bingley Music Live is the spot to discover your new favourite band with rising stars like Tom Grennan, The Big Moon, Tigercub, Fangclub, The Orielles and more playing across the weekend.
The Kaiser Chiefs
Bingley Music Live provides a platform for new artists to burst onto the scene and this year, after a tough selection process through the BML emerging talent competition, four bands have been awarded the opportunity to open stages at the Festival. The lucky winners are anthemic pop-rockers Your Illuminations, Huddersfield’s Able’s Army, power-pop outfit The Harriets and Leeds seven-piece Sifaka. Camping is not available on site for the festival - however there are a number of close-by options for festival goers to get the full experience. Bingley Music Live has teamed up with Bradford & Bingley Sports Club for the festival weekend, and their campsite is within easy walking distance of Myrtle Park and has great facilities, close to all local amenities. Site pitches book up early, so don’t leave it too late to get yours or you may be disappointed. Festivalgoers who prefer four posts to the floor can find many nearby hotels and B&Bs. 34 Preview Feature
As a festival, in co-ordination with Bradford City Council, Bingley Music Live is proudly dedicated to supporting and implementing green initiatives. With an emphasis on including traders who offer fair trade, ethical options, biodegradable products, LED low carbon stage lighting and an across the board recycling policy, the festival is devoted to keeping Bingley clean and green. Saltaire Brewery Beer Festival
Ian Beesley and Ian McMillan at Salts Mill
Celebrating real ale and craft brewing, the brewery will offer their ever-popular range of Saltaire beers, plus the most interesting artisanal beers and ciders from across the UK’s craft ale industry. There’ll be a massive selection of over 40 beers in total, all draught-poured by hand-pumps from the brewery’s chilled cellars.
Local social documentary photographer Ian Beesley and poet Ian McMillan have collaborated once again. This time they bring their work to Saltaire and will put on a special show in the roof space of Salts Mill. New poems from McMillan accompany images Beesley took of Salts in the 1980s and this year. The mill was virtually redundant in the 1980s and the modern day photos show the incredible change the mill has undergone. McMillan’s poetry captures the mood both past and present.
Kickstarting the Saltaire Festival in early September is the Saltaire Brewery Beer Festival - the event for beer lovers!
And there’ll be a live band and entertainment, as well as Burlington’s Hog Roast and a selection of the finest street food eats for when you’ve worked up an appetite. The festival will run over two days. Friday 8 September, 2-10pm, and Saturday 9 September, 12 noon-10pm. Tickets are £5, including free pint, glass and programme. 40 Picks of the Month

A Quick Chat with
Claire Gibbons Claire Gibbons is a freelance digital marketing and communications consultant. She also volunteers with Saltaire Festival and Leeds Music Trust working with them on their communications and publicity. Favourite place to eat / drink in and around Saltaire? I couldn’t live without Roberts Park and the canal tow path. I work from home a lot, when I’m not at my desk in Assembly, so like to break up my day with a run or walk up the tow path and into the park. It’s very good for the soul! And I do like to end the week (or sometimes start it!) with a pint or three in Fanny’s Ale House!
Local event you couldn’t live without? Saltaire Festival. I’ve been coming to the Festival for years, way before I lived in Saltaire, and now really enjoy being part of the volunteer team that make it happen. It’s at a great time of the year and, for me, marks the end of summer – in a really fun way!
Local business you admire? Edward Street Bakery. It’s been great to see them grow and recently move to their new premises. Their produce is amazing – no wonder there are queues out of the door whenever they are open!
Local person you admire (past or present)? Jonathan Silver. A genuinely inspirational guy who took the dilapidated Salts Mill and made it into something truly amazing. Salts Mill (as it is now) is 30 years old this year and, sadly, 20 years since Jonathan Silver died.
