Saltaire Festival 2017: In Pictures Saltaire Festival

Words by Claire Gibbons Pictures by Tim Smith

After almost a year in the planning, the 15th annual Saltaire Festival greeted thousands of visitors to the World Heritage Site - and they weren’t disappointed! From the opening weekend, with the Open Gardens trail and village pop-ups, right through to the famous finale weekend with the Continental Market and bands in Roberts Park, there really was something for everyone. Festival Director, Ros Garside said, “It’s been a huge success and we really must thank everyone involved throughout the year. From the volunteers who help keep everything ticking over during the Festival itself, to the programmers and event planners, the

performers, the stall holders, our sponsors and supporters, the stewards, Bradford Council, the Festival Board – and of course the villagers and visitors themselves, without whom the Festival simply wouldn’t be the great event that it is. We’ve loved seeing everyone’s pics and comments over the various social media channels!” So, as the glitter settles on Festival Towers here’s to 2018! Bottoms up at Saltaire Brewery Beer Festival

Eat:Drink Bradford book launch

A true celebration of real ale and craft brewing, the Saltaire Brewery Beer Festival showcased some of the most exciting ale and craft beer names in the industry, as well as some brand new, limited edition releases and collaborations.

Festival Publications, the producers of the Saltaire Review, have launched a second volume of their popular Eat:Drink Bradford guide.

Even non beer-drinkers were catered for with a large selection of artisan ciders and the festival’s debut Prosecco Bar. Burlington’s Hog Roast and award winning Indian street food favourite Ruby’s Street Kitchen were on hand serving delicious food and snacks throughout the festival, keeping beer-lovers well fed. Meanwhile, a prize draw with amazing prizes (including free beer for a year!) raised a fantastic sum for the two festival charities nominated by Saltaire Brewery staff: The Brain & Spine Foundation and The Sophie Lancaster Foundation. Ewen Gordon, MD of Saltaire Brewery, said, “the Festival is our biggest event of the year and is always extremely popular and, we’re pleased to say, this year was no different. It’s great to see so many beer lovers gathering from near and far to celebrate with us and we can’t wait to do it all again next year!”

16

The A6 booklet provides an extensive guide to the best places to eat and drink across the district, with over 60 featured venues. The guide is free and will be available from all participating venues and tourist destinations including Salts Mill. A website to accompany the guide is also expected to go live in early November. eatdrinkbradford.co.uk

The Rhubarb Triangle Theatre & Performance

by Mike Farren

Rhubarb has been growing in the Triangle. However, the murmur you might hear on the last Wednesday of every month is not the forcing of a crop of the pinkstemmed, sour-sweet vegetable. Instead, it’s the sound of poets, short story writers and spoken word artists weaving their linguistic spells for an enraptured, evergrowing audience in Shipley’s own Triangle – the beer shop and cultural hub. The Rhubarb open mic night began in early 2016, as the brainchild of Kristina Diprose and Dan Hughes, who met as members of the Leeds Savages writing group. Formerly resident in Leeds, Kristina comments, “When I moved here a couple of years ago, it became obvious that it was a creative hub. I loved getting involved with community arts projects like the Saltaire Living Advent Calendar and Irregular Women. It seemed odd that there wasn’t a similar outlet for new writing. Fortunately coinciding with Kristina’s arrival, the Triangle was establishing itself as more than just a shop selling beer. Kristina continues, “I went to a gig at The Triangle, and it turns out they had the perfect open mic space tucked away upstairs.” Rhubarb #1 featured punk-influenced Calderdale spoken-word artist, Genevieve Walsh. Also an associate of A Firm of Poets, Walsh proved a triumph, and an inspired choice. “We had no idea if anyone would show up to the first Rhubarb, but on the night the room was full to bursting,” remembers

Kristina. Spoken word had arrived in Shipley – with a vengeance! More followed, mixing up poets with prose writers, but Kristina and Dan’s schedules became increasingly hectic toward the end of the year, and several months were missed. 2017 saw a re-boot, with local poets Nick Allen, Lorna Faye Dunsire and myself brought in to help out. The first Rhubarb of the year, featuring Bradford poet and BBC ‘New Voice’ Kirsty Taylor, saw crowds to match the launch, and the night has been a regular fixture on the last Wednesday of the month ever since. Nick’s involvement was perhaps more appropriate than any of us realised at the time. “I grew up being able to gaze out of my bedroom window on low flat rhubarb forcing sheds around Wakefield,” he confides. Certainly. The new set-up has seen the night go from strength to strength, regularly testing the capacity of the venue. There is also an eclectic mix of headliners, with prose writers like Adam Z Robinson, Mandy Sutter and S.J.

followed by a gig at the Ilkley Literature Festival on 9 October.

The hosts are proud of attracting stars of the poetry scene, such as Walsh and Taylor, Shipleybased Tom Weir (who has been commended in the National Poetry Prize and shortlisted for the Forward prize) and rising star Mark Pajak (forthcoming in November).

With an ‘Un/forced’ theme, picking up on different methods of growing rhubarb, the anthology features a contract of writing that came easily, compared to work that was laboured over. Nick describes the anthology as “A great way to cap off a successful first 18 months.”

However, it’s also great to give a break to new talent, such as Silsden’s Gill Lambert, and Spanish-born, Leeds-based Alicia Fernández, both of whom have recently published debut pamphlets. Then there are the open mic readers, who give the evening such energy. Nick says, “The audience is welcoming of new readers, attentive and appreciative of whoever stands up to read - and it can take some guts the first few times,” while Kristina comments, “I always look forward to the open mic: we’ve had all sorts from published poets, to bloggers, to people reading in public for the first time.” To celebrate how far the event has come, Rhubarb has just launched an anthology, featuring poems and short stories from the hosts and many of the past and future headliners. For the first time, too, Rhubarb has embarked on a very brief tour, with a successful appearance at The Hop during the Saltaire Festival to be

He goes on to say, “I think Rhubarb’s reputation is growing. We are busier month on month. The ambience of the last evening was the most uplifting I’ve felt, everyone who read was good, the crowd were happy and involved and we finished off with Tom Weir who is kind of fabulous.” There are more fabulous readers to come this year, with a whole new programme for 2018 currently being devised. Why not get along to Rhubarb @The Triangle on the last Wednesday of the month? Rhubarb features S.J. Bradley at 7PM on 25 October, while Mark Pajak will headline on 29 November. The mini festival will also feature a number of colourful and quirky illuminated stilt walkers and roaming jugglers.

Making Light at the Caroline Club Theatre & Performance

by Mike Farren

It was fitting that the first outing for Making Light should be at the Saltaire Festival. There was a packed house at the Caroline Club to see the performance of the new play by bard of Saltaire Eddie Lawler performed by a cast from the rapidly developing Shipley Little Theatre (SLT). The play will be touring venues around Yorkshire – a first for SLT – but here, on home territory, the crowd was royally entertained by the tale of a remarkable life that began three hundred years ago. Jack Metcalf overcame humble beginnings and a bout of polio that left him blind from the age of six, to live an eventful, memorable life. Born in Knaresborough in 1717, his early years as a fiddler at Harrogate’s fashionable spa saw him as an early form of rock star, up to his enforced departure to London, following the pregnancy of one of his admirers and an illicit dalliance with another – his future wife, Dolly. Even more remarkable were the involvement of this blind musician in the military campaign against Bonnie Prince Charlie, and his eventual career as the builder of some of the country’s first decent roads since the Romans. The young Metcalf is played with gusto by Patrick Thornton, while Dan Jeffrey makes the older (and, indeed, posthumous) Jack a calm and successful, but no less driven individual.

22

If Jack Metcalf is a real, historical figure, he shares the plot of the play with another, more shadowy Knaresborough legend. Mother Shipton is the guide for Jack’s return to the 21st century world. Played at the start and end of the piece by Irene Lofthouse in conical witch’s hat, the other female members of the cast also take turns, with a conscious variety of accents and appearances, to point up the fictional nature of this character. This rollicking play, full of colour, music, event, humour and a vivid flavour of eighteenth century is brought to life not just by Lawler script, but by strong performances throughout. Saltaire loved it, and it’s a credit to the SLT cast and production team as it sets out on the road, including, I understand, some of the roads Metcalf made! Justin Moorhouse

Comedy Review Saltaire Festival Comedy Night By Chris Cooper

A dictionary definition of masochism is the enjoyment of an activity that appears to be painful or tedious. The always sold-out comedy night at Saltaire Festival is painful, but for the right reasons, and never tedious. By painful, I mean that you know you’ve had a good evening when you’re doubled up in pain from laughing so much. In recent times, the likes of Romesh Ranganathan, Suzi Ruffell, Rob Rouse and Daliso Chaponda (third in Britain’s Got Talent this year) have had festival goers at Caroline St Club in stitches. This year that task fell to Dan Nightingale (last year’s compere) and Justin Moorhouse, who first came to prominence as Peter Kay’s hapless handyman in Phoenix Nights. The evening was skilfully held together by Katie Mulgrew, who should know a thing or two about comedy, being the daughter of veteran comic Jimmy Cricket (not that she mentions or plays on it). Her audience interaction was outstanding, picking on one couple throughout but in a friendly not confrontational way, even to the point of suggesting (without actually saying it) that maybe they’d first met at a swingers’ party. For me, her tales of motherhood were more entertaining than Nightingale’s about having become a father. Some of his bedroom stories may be more suited to a comedy club with a younger audience, but he still went down well (no pun intended). The second half belonged to Moorhouse, who as with Mulgrew and Nightingale, can relate to the proverbial man and woman in the street. Given the way some people were walking home, he’d certainly hit the spot, and as with so many top comics, trying to recall their best gags the next day is a futile exercise. As a stand-alone Festival event, the comedy night is well-established and one that people are always asking who’ll be on, as soon as the date’s announced. The popularity never wanes, and who knows, in a few years time there could be a young lad walking on stage, asking “have you heard about my Mum or Grandad?”

WOW -Women of the World Festival Theatre & Performance

by Aina Khan

It was the festival that pulled together women from all over Bradford under one roof for an electrifying weekend celebrating women and young girls. WOW Bradford is back again this November with a bang, and it’s set to be bigger and better than ever! Last year’s festival was packed with the perfect dose of powerful discussions from the legacy of glass-ceiling-shattering women of Bradford, prostitution and domestic violence, to more light-hearted events such as a Beyoncé dance class and herbal remedy workshops. This year’s WOW Bradford will see the badass women of Bradford discussion return honouring the female change-makers of the city; a sports empowerment workshop led by Bradford Cobra’s Ezdihar Abdulmula; a performance from Dance United on domestic violence; hard-hitting talks on the role of women on the front line during World War One; Suffra-jitsu self defence classes reviving the self defence techniques used by suffragettes. Empowering, inspiring and rousing, there will be no shortage of things to do for the very youngest of Bradfordians to the very old, with a variety of events for all and even crèche facilities to ensure that no one misses out. WOW Bradford has always

been about bringing people together from all walks of life to smile, to laugh, and to cry together. From Bradford to Beijing, WOW Bradford is part of a global movement of WOW festivals held across the world. What started as a women’s festival in London at Southbank Centre by the founder of WOW, Jude Kelly, has fast become the largest women’s festival in the world, with WOW festivals happening across five continents and over 1 million people involved. Next year will mark a century since women fought for the right to vote in the UK, and so the festival is only one of a handful of WOW’s honouring the legacy of women’s suffrage. Last year, WOW Bradford was programmed by theatre director and Bradford lass Evie Manning. It was created with the input of Bradfordian women and men alike who had a say in what they wanted to see at the festival. This year the festival will continue its tradition of being led by the people, for the

people. Local lasses Saliha Rubani and Laura Brooks are now carrying the WOW Bradford torch, programming a tailored festival that has Bradford and her people at its very heart. One of the most enduring legacies of the WOW Bradford festival from last year is that it has given a burst of confidence and a hunger for change for those who were involved. Both Saliha Rubani and Laura Brooks started out as volunteers last year, a change they’re now leading as they’ve made the giant leap from volunteering to now programming the entire festival. And then there’s the WOWsers, a group of young 15-18 year old young women from schools across the city, who not only created a powerful campaign promoting positive body image with the #IAmPerfectAsMe campaign that is now being used in WOW festivals across the country. They were singlehandedly responsible for convincing Nobel Peace Prize winner, Malala Yousufzai, to attend the festival, until she was taken ill on the day in a dramatic turn of events.

There is something magical in the air here in Bradford, where there’s a real feminist vibe emerging as Bradford women are seizing the steering wheel, leading to the city towards greener pastures. From the very grassroots, to local arts organisation like The Brick Box, to Bradford council, Bradford’s women are the decision-makers calling the shots, true to Bradford’s rich history of fiercely passionate activism. With WOW Bradford around the corner, this year’s festival will continue to inspire and empower even more women and young girls to take the wheel and push for change. But here at least in Bradford, to quote Beyoncé, “Who runs the world?” Right now, it seems Bradford women do. So get involved! Follow us on Twitter and Facebook. Join our mailing list, and be a part of the WOW Bradford movement!

The Death of Stalin Director: Armando Iannucci. Starring: Steve Buscemi, Andrea Riseborough, Jeffrey Tambor. UK, 2017. 104 mins The internal political landscape of 1950’s Soviet Russia takes on darkly comic form in a new film by Emmy award-winning and Oscar-nominated writer/ director Armando Iannucci. In the days following Stalin’s collapse, his core team of ministers tussle for control; some want positive change in the Soviet Union, others have more sinister motives. Their one common trait? They’re all just desperately trying to remain alive. A film that combines comedy, drama, pathos and political manoeuvring.

The Record Club

21 October, The Underground

The Triangle, Shipley Saturday 4th November, 8pm.

Saltaire 5-piece FLING provide the previously unsearchedfor missing link between T-Rex and the Fat White Family. Forging together Glam Rock, Punk, and Psych with a solid sense of Northern irony and an ever-present aura of late night haziness FLING have created a sound which captivates, entertains and stands out from the crowd gaining support at Beats 1, BBC 6 Music, and a rapidly growing fanbase of ‘Flingers’. Following a slew of home demos, and a run of their own ‘Get Flung’ night the band have teamed up with Lee Smith at Greenmount Studios (The Cribs / Pulled Apart By Horses) to record a number of new tracks to be released throughout late 2017 via Leeds indie label Dance to the Radio.

It may not be the Wigan Casino, and you may not see many pairs of high-waisted, bell-bottom trousers, but on Saturday 4th November you can definitely enjoy a night of soul and Northern Soul music from The Record Club at the Triangle in Shipley. Curated by one of our members, Anne-Marie, this Northern Soul night will be packed with classics you will and won’t have heard. And as the decks are there for all, make sure you bring your own favourites to play too, from Harold Melvin to Rita & The Tiaras and everything in between.

Saltaire Live present... De Temps Antan 22 October, Victoria Hall

Blair’s lyrics are at times reminiscent of a person who has lived a full and interesting life, yet this man is still in the early stages of his life and career

De Temps Antan are another of the bands bringing the powerful, envigorating music of Quebec to this side of the Atlantic, creating some sizeable musical waves in the process.

Collaborating with his trusted writing partners of Dave Burn (AHAB), Gita Langley and Ed Harcourt, who will also be producing Blair’s next album, Blair has compiled a new collection of songs already being billed as the modern Heartbreaker. He is now locked in the studio with producer and collaborator Ed Harcourt and will release his new album in early 2018.

If you enjoyed Saltaire Live with Le Vent du Nord, then don’t miss De Temps Antan. Both bands come from the same stable – two members of De Temps have brothers in Le Vent du Nord, developing as young players in the same musical households and absorbing all that the buzzing musical environment of Quebec has to offer.

The singer-songwriter released his third fulllength album, ‘Gilded’, to rave reviews and embarked on a UK headline tour. Both singles from the album, ‘The Egoist’ and ‘356’ (both produced by Harcourt), were successfully playlisted by BBC Radio 2 over the summer of 2016 and the producers at Radio 2 are eagerly awaiting the new offering.

If you like a good groove and appreciate a rare 7-inch keep an eye out for Tony in our listings pages and on twitter - @TrainerTrouble

27 October, Caroline Street Social Club The crayon sketched sign that hangs on the door of the blues venue that reads “Boys Only” has been set ablaze by a new breed of girl guitarists. One of the most talented of these arsonists is a young singer and guitar player from Kansas City, Missouri. Signing a contract with Ruf Records in 2010, Fish has since forged a stellar career in the music business, releasing her fourth album, Chills & Fever in March that harks back to the R&B/ garage rock/Motown/early rock n’ roll sound of Detroit where it was recorded. With a voice God chose to inspire the soul and a golden touch on the guitar a Samantha Fish concert is truly an escape from the realities of modern life. Lauded by such legends as Buddy Guy, the Royal Southern Brotherhood and Luther Dickinson, with an international reputation as a powerhouse blues-rock musician, she also combines the artful sensitivity of Bonnie Raitt and the effortless swagger of the Rolling Stones’ Keith Richards. keighleyblueslive.co.uk

Bob Stanley: from Saint Etienne to Saltaire Music

by James Collingwood

Bob Stanley is a writer, journalist, film producer and film curator. With Sarah Cracknell and Pete Wiggs he is a member of the group Saint Etienne who have been making records since 1990. His excellent book Yeah Yeah Yeah - the Story of Modern Pop covers the period of pop music up to the year 2000 and as a journalist he has written for among others NME and Melody Maker and currently has a regular column in Record Collector. For the last three years or so Bob has lived in Saltaire. I interviewed Bob in a Saltaire café. Bob, I knew you had connections with Saltaire but didn’t know you lived here. What attracted you to the place? I came here for the first time about 20 years ago and have now been living here for about three years. I’ve always been interested in model settlements. My girlfriend is from Yorkshire and was feeling a bit homesick in London. There’s not as much networking either. With Saint Etienne Sarah is in Oxford and Pete is in Brighton but it doesn’t make it difficult. We work things out when we have to. I always loved the way your albums have links between songs. For instance on the track on Home Counties called Popmaster there’s a brilliant Ken Bruce Radio 2 spoof (“Hello Leonard from Saltaire” …) How do the links come about and would you class your albums as “concept” albums? For Popmaster we just contacted Ken Bruce on twitter and he agreed to do it. Nice guy. All our albums are loosely themed. Home Counties is about where we grew up and BBC Radio is part of that. Most albums I like are concept albums in a way but don’t

44

necessarily have to sound like Genesis’ Lamb Lies Down on Broadway for example! Two songs on Home Counties I was fascinated to ask you about were Whyteleafe and Train drivers in Eyeliner. What are those songs about? Is Whyteleafe about Bowie? Yeah, Bowie was from Bromley and always looked down his nose at Croydon – he used to say to his mates “that’s so fucking Croydon!” Whyteleafe is between Croydon and Caterham and we were imagining Bowie working in a job like insurance and travelling from Croydon. Train drivers in Eyeliner is about two things. People in ASLEF and their musical taste being post punk, rock & roll and Metal (playing Section 25, Gene Vincent and Whitesnake on the tannoy.) Also it’s about Nick Sanderson from the group Earl Brutus who became a train driver in his 40s because he wanted to be a train driver as a kid! When I contacted you for this interview Glen Campbell had unfortunately died. Glen Campbell was obviously an influence? Yeah and especially his work with Jimmy Webb and the songs with a sense of place

Music

or mentioning specific places like Galveston. Jimmy Webb wrote a moving thing on Facebook about Campbell and how his kids called him “Uncle Glen” because he was such a nice guy. You work continuously as a music journalist. Did you start on the fanzines? I was living in Peterborough and working in a record shop. These guys used to come in …I’d go for a drink with them and they said oh we’ve been doing a fanzine for ages. We did that (Pop Avalanche) and then I did CAFF with Pete (Wiggs). We sent one off to James Brown who was in charge of live reviews for the NME. He sent me to review Johnny Cash. That was my first review for the NME. Did being a music journalist have advantages in your work with Saint Etienne? Well probably... particularly early on. I had a decent idea of how things worked and how labels worked. I was 25 when the first record came out and knew things like how not to make an awful deal. We always kept control of our records and our artwork in Britain. And with licensing... if someone

abroad wants to do a remix they have to ask permission. It wasn’t that useful sometimes in getting reviews from other journalists … definitely detected an element of jeolousy but that’s evened out now. People are multi-disciplined like Jarvis Cocker – doing different things. It’s baffling how people only do one thing. Any music from the area you’d recommend? Dean McPhee from Bingley is good...he delivered his record to my house yesterday after I spoke to him on twitter. Sort of John Martynish, atmospheric guitar style. In the past there were songs by psych bands from round here such as Red Sky at night by the Accent and Allan Pounds (from Nab Wood) – Get Rich Searching in the Wilderness which is a great record! The Caroline Club in Saltaire is such a brilliant venue. We might do more things there as well... We did a Christmas party there last December with just us playing records and got a great turn out. Home Counties by Saint Etienne is out now on Heavenly Records. Bob Stanley’s book Yeah Yeah Yeah : the Story of Modern Pop is published by Faber & Faber.

The Record Club: The friendly vinyl revival by Will Hughes

What is it about the record that has made such an impact with music lovers young and old 30 years after it was deemed ‘dead media’ by the record industry? Why is it that there is a Record Club in Shipley, rather than a CD Club, or MP3 Club? Some people talk of sound quality, that there is nothing ‘warmer’ than the sound of vinyl, others love the tangibility of owning an actual item, rather than a line of code in this digital age, and the act of playing the music instead of hitting the space bar. For me personally, top of the list is being able to see the album artwork in all its glory, and I’m a sucker for a coloured vinyl. The Record Club embraces any and all who have an affinity with vinyl. In Magnus Mills’ recent – and, for Record Clubbers, somewhat dystopian – novel The Forensic Record Society, the members of said group listen to records “without comment or judgement.” Similarly, no music is off limits at Record Club, as a recent airing of Bruce Willis’ Under The Boardwalk is evidence

of, but comments are not only welcome, but encouraged. No one thinks twice about letting you rummage through their selections and everyone is always up for a chat about music. That’s undoubtedly what they are there for. And don’t think anyone is a professional DJ or a turntable hog; pretty much all of us have had a shaky hand when it comes to putting the needle down. The Record Club is one of the friendliest places I’ve been done since moving up to Yorkshire. I arrived in the area knowing no one, and since I started attending Record Club in October 2016, I like to think I’ve made some firm friends. After all, they let me play Bruce Willis.

Record Club meets on the first Saturday of each month. recordclub.org.uk The Triangle, 47 Bradford Rd, Shipley
