Vegan cafe opens in Saltaire

Saltaire Peace and Craft Fair launches a summer event

Newly-opened eatery Dandelion has become the Bradford district’s only fully vegan restaurant, serving both full meals and snacks, plus great coffee.

A long-running and unique fundraising event is branching out this June by launching an event in the summer. The Peace & Craft Fair usually takes place in November in Victoria Hall in Saltaire, and building on the success of these events, the organisers are planning a summer fair, to take place on 16th June.

Open 10am to 8pm, seven days a week, Dandelion is part of the Holding Space, which also boasts a yoga studio run by Heather Yoga. If there is a border between Shipley and Saltaire, Dandelion, on John Street, must be on it, set back from Saltaire Road next to Wycliffe Primary School. Dandelion say, “We aim to provide delicious and wholesome food that will stimulate your palate whilst being a vibrant feast for the eyes. We use the freshest ingredients, organic, locally sourced and seasonal wherever possible.” All the food is made on the premises and huge windows make the space light and airy. Online reviews are complimentary too, ‘Chilled atmosphere with friendly efficient service. Quality at a very good price.’ Visit www.dandelion-cafe.co.uk or search Dandelion Cafe on Facebook. Dog-friendly.

This year will be the fifteenth year for the fair, organised by Yorkshire CND, and they expect to welcome many local visitors to the event. In addition to the 50+ stalls showcasing local artists and crafters, and stalls run by local charities and campaigns, the Fair also has live music all day with local musicians and choirs. Delicious food will be served at the event in the Disarming Cafe, and there is a tombola where you could be the lucky winner of one of the handmade gifts donated by stallholders. Always popular with families, the fair is running for the first time this year a Kids Fest, with face-painting, badgemaking and other activities. The event will begin at Victoria Hall in Saltaire at 10am and run until 4pm, costing £1 entry for adults and completely free for children. Saltaire Festival Poetry Competition & Open Gardens Poety Competition Entries close 25 June (Words and photos: Claire Gibbons)

The summer nights are brightening up the village and the programme for Saltaire Festival 2018 is taking shape. The 10-day format will be familiar to most but this year there are a few new elements to spice up the line-up and encourage even more people to get involved. A first for this year is a poetry competition based around the Festival theme for 2018, The World in Saltaire: Saltaire in the World. The idea is to encourage everyone, young and old, to enter an original piece of poetry with the opportunity for the winners to read their poem out at the Festival Poetry night in September. Ros Garside, Festival Board member and Events-lead, has masterminded the competition and is looking forward to the entries flooding in. “We are always looking for ways to encourage creativity and artistic flair within the community in and around Saltaire and writing a poem is something that everyone can have a go at. “The theme can be interpreted as the poets feel most appropriate to them, and we are particularly encouraging schools to get involved and send something to us by the

10

closing date of Monday 25 June.” Following the success of recent years, the opening weekend will feature Open Gardens across the village. There’s still time for residents to get involved and put their house on the trail map – quite literally! Festival Chair, Vicky Bower, is encouraging residents to welcome Festival visitors into their gardens and yards, “We’re looking to feature an eclectic mix of gardens and sculptures and we carefully match the art with the space that it will be featured in.” The first of the Festival events have recently been announced with the full programme to follow mid-July. The ever-popular, and usually sell-out Comedy night on Wednesday 12th September will feature Mick Ferry, a regular at the Comedy Store in London and Manchester, Steve Shanyaski, and Barry Dodds, who has been a finalist in various high-profile competitions such as Jimmy Carr’s Comedy Idol and Jongleurs Last Laugh Comedy Search. And new for this year is the ‘A Different Splash’ Cabaret Night – a night of exciting and entertaining drag cabaret set against the glittery curtain of Caroline Street Social Club. Not to be missed.

Bingley Show 2018 21 July, Myrtle Park, Bingley

Preparations are well under way in Bingley for the 137th Bingley Show staged in the town’s Myrtle Park and organised by the Airedale Agricultural Society. The 2018 event will be held on Saturday July 21st. Bingley Show is one of the largest one-day shows in the North of England with attendances of around 10,000 people. Traditional agricultural exhibits will be present for visitors to enjoy along with attractions such as the Jamie Squibb Freestyle Motocross display. Definitely a must see! The Hogg Show will also be appearing, with fun filled shows that will teach visitors all about pigs. Be sure to stop by and learn all about the various breeds found in the UK. Those with a competitive streak can enter some of the wide range of competitive classes held on the day. These range from cattle and sheep classes, through rabbits, cavies, handicrafts and horticulture. Further details, schedules and entry forms can be found on the shows website. Those who like competition of a more strenuous nature can take part in the Bingley Harriers 10km Race which starts from the main show ring. The cattle and sheep that will be shown by exhibitors from across the North of England will be in peak condition, many having only recently returned home from the Great Yorkshire Show in Harrogate. Hopes are high that both the quality and quantity of livestock that have been present in recent years will be repeated once again in 2018.

The showjumping events form one of the days major attractions, taking place in the main ring throughout the day. The event attracts some of the sport’s top riders and their horses, as well as local competitors looking to compete at one of the regions most popular shows. The showjumping begins around 8.30am, and returns later in the afternoon for the action packed accumulator. Always a crowd pleaser and a good reason to both arrive early in the day and enjoy the early evening in the glorious amphitheatre of Myrtle Park. Unique shopping opportunities will be on offer as the new larger craft marquee will house some fantastic locally produced gifts that cannot be found on the high street. The Members Marquee will once again be sited in the bottom meadow alongside the main ring. It will allow members access to, a private bar facility, luxury toilets, ringside seating and tables and lunch is included. This promises to be the perfect location from which to enjoy the programme of main ring attractions and the surrounding backdrop of Myrtle Park. So whether you wish to enjoy the many exhibits or be wowed by the main ring attractions, shop at the many unique trade stands or take part in the 10km race, make sure you get your ticket and head to Myrtle Park for a great family day out in Bingley. Shipley Street Arts Festival 30 June - 1 July, Shipley Town Centre

On a sunny weekend in June the streets of Shipley will come to life in a celebration of the best of UK street theatre and 250 years of Circus. The Shipley Street Arts Festival, which first ran in 2014, has grown from a showcase of local artists and companies to an internationally recognised street theatre festival. This year’s Festival takes place on Saturday 30th June and Sunday 1st July. At first it seemed the festival might not go ahead this year after Shipley based theatre company and festival producers Q20 Events were unsuccessful in securing funding from Arts Council England. Charlotte Vipond-Clarke, the Festival Director, said she was “obviously disappointed not to get funding from the Arts Council this year, but would like to thank them for all the support they have shown the Festival over the last four years. Without them we would never have been able to put on those wonderful weekends of free entertainment. People came from all over Yorkshire and beyond and we are immensely proud of what we have achieved. Last year, bringing an international act like Boom! to Yorkshire for the first time was something I will never forget.” Just when it seemed that plans would have to be put on hold until 2019, Bradford Council stepped and saved the festival. Using funding from their Visitor Promotion Fund the council made sure the festival will go ahead. Charlotte is delighted “When we announced that the festival would have to be cancelled for 2018 we got so many messages on Facebook saying

14

that it was such a shame and that the festival would be greatly missed.” While the festival is set to go ahead the reduced budget means cutting the program from three days to a single day event. However, a new partnership with Rae Gala has meant that people will be able to have a weekend of fun, visiting the Street Arts Festival on Saturday 30th June in Shipley Market Square and Rae Gala in nearby Northcliffe Park on Sunday 1st July. Visitors can also enjoy the Festival Market on Friday 29th & Saturday 30th June. “We are delighted. We want to bring nothing but the best to Yorkshire. We are so proud of what we have achieved in Shipley and so excited about what the future holds. We are thrilled to be working alongside Rae Gala. It is a wellestablished celebration of Shipley, and to bring it under the banner of the Street Arts Festival is a great opportunity for us both. They have shown exactly the kind of community spirit and friendship that makes Yorkshire so great.” With acts confirmed and the program being finalised the festival looks set to be a thrilling mix of professional street theatre, incredible circus acts and local performers. “If any local business would like to get involved as sponsors it’s not too late to add more!” says Charlotte. She’d also like to hear from local groups and community centres who’d like to get involved. If you’d like to get involved go to the festival’s Facebook page @ShipleyStreetArts or get in touch at info@q20theatre.co.uk

Paintings from the Dreamer’s Corner Until 24 June, The Triangle, 47 Bradford Road, Shipley

Local artist Caroline Brown, one half of the team behind Rose & Brown Vintage (organisers of vintage fairs and record fairs) is exhibiting new paintings upstairs at The Triangle in Shipley. Entitled Paintings from the Dreamer’s Corner the exhibition focuses on figures escaped from dreams and reverie, chasing the ethereal and finding the elusive presence that exists between reality and fairytale. Caroline says, ”I have been working on the paintings for more than two years, fitting in the odd painting session around running our own business. It’s wonderful to get work out into the world again, as I exhibited many times in the past, when we lived in Brighton. When our vintage business took off in 2007 it was hard to keep the painting going too, so I went several years without picking up a paintbrush.

20

“The upstairs space at The Triangle is an ideal place to display work as it’s a popular community gathering space, well-loved not just for its excellent craft beers but also for hosting music and other social events and creative workshops.” The Triangle is open Wednesday 12pm – 9pm, Thursday to Saturday 12pm – 11pm and Sunday 12pm – 9pm. Caroline Brown’s exhibition ends on Sunday 24 June 2018.

Shipley Wayzgoose 9 June, Kirkgate Centre, Shipley

The inaugural 2017 Shipley Wayzgoose has gone down in history as a rip roaring success with people coming from far and wide to take in the heady sounds, smells, characters and cornucopia of old and new printed delights. Conversations were had, tales were told and giggles could be heard above the buzz of the days inky proceedings in a building that has witnessed 160 years of Shipley life. The event had an unexpectedly high turn out on the day which meant the Kirkgate Centre was buzzing all day long with printers young and old mingling with the curious and delighted who had turned up to see what this Wayzgoose fuss was all about. For those that re wondering where the name comes from…A wayzgoose (or wayz-goose, waygoose or wayzegoose) was at one time an entertainment given by a master printer to his workmen each year on or about St Bartholomew’s Day (24 August). It marked the traditional end of summer and the start of the season of working by candlelight. Later, the word came to refer to an annual outing and dinner for the staff of a

printing works or the printers on a newspaper. Over 20 printers from across the UK represented all aspects of letterpress, fine press printing and bookbinding on the day. Fine press books, luxurious prints, printing demos (one on a bike no less..), chap books, cards, posters, broadsides, newly cast type and secondhand equipment were all available to prod, poke, discuss, haggle over and to buy. The Wayzgoose team hope you can join them again on Saturday 9th June from 11am-5pm at The Kirkgate Centre in Shipley when once again they’ll have the finest selection of printers from across the land to tantalise your soul, make your heart sing and of course…tease the money from your pockets! Entry is free and the cafe & bar will be open all day so do pop in for a nosey & a nice cup of tea. For more information visit www.kirkgatecentre.org.uk

Arts

Paula Dunn Painter, Arts Trail co-founder and influential member of Saltaire’s artistic community Paula Dunn peaks to Mike Farren about her proceses, projects and relationship with Saltaire.

Things have really been happening for Saltaire artist Paula Dunn recently. Like many others, her house, also containing work by Ian Burdall and Elizabeth Chambers, was buzzing over the Saltaire Arts Trail – something in which Paula has been involved from the very start. The Arts Trail and the 16 years that she has been in Saltaire have clearly inspired her in many ways, especially in getting re-started as an artist. She explains, “I dropped out of art college. It took a long time of not really doing anything and just experimenting. I stumbled across oil painting and

22

took a course at Shipley College. I was discovering my own technique, but I was making that leap from thinking “I’m making some progress here” to “I’m ready to exhibit”. I was one of the people who set up the Arts Trail and it helped because it’s a safe environment. Being able to do that in your own house and being able to curate your own work as well, it’s encouraging!” She goes on to say, “I feel I belong to an artistic community in Saltaire. There seems to be a hub, but it also draws quite a lot of people. I didn’t move here because of the artistic community: I only

Arts

stumbled across that. It was a happy coincidence.” Those who follow her art outside the Arts Trail weekend will also have heard news of success in prestigious art competitions and noticed distinct developments in her style. About the competitions, Paula is characteristically modest, “I was shortlisted for The Artist magazine and for the National Open Art competition. I got into the Birmingham competition as well. It’s a bit hit and miss. You can apply to an awful lot of places and not get anywhere. Out of ten or twelve, I got into three. They’re like buses!” There was one common factor in the competition successes. Paula tells me, “Lymm Dam was the one painting that was shortlisted for all three. That is quite different and quite abstract in terms of the colour scheme. It was quite experimental.” For a painter known primarily for representational depictions of beautiful, brooding landscapes in oils, Lymm Dam represented quite a departure. This is part of her growing interest in the use of ‘cold wax technique’. “About a year and a half ago, I decided I wanted to do a course and saw that there was an oil and cold wax residency in Ireland. It was an opportunity for me to have nine days of painting solidly and tuition on cold wax. What I wanted was to loosen up my landscapes. Even though they were quite loosely representational, I wanted to add more colour. Cold wax gave me that opportunity. The technique is about layering paint and seeing how the paint behaves, so it is quite unpredictable. You can’t set off thinking, “I’m going to paint a landscape of the Yorkshire Dales”. You might have something in mind, but as the painting’s developing, you’re starting to think, ‘That reminds me of something’”.

Another residency – also the result of success in a competitive process – at Brisons Veor in Cornwall gave Paula the chance to concentrate on the new technique, with striking and colourful results. “I started with a new palette every day,” she says, “and they became my main paintings. I was playing with colours. I wanted to paint something with some yellow in it, which is unusual for me: I’m not a ‘yellow’ person. Then I realised it was because of all of the gorse around me. It’s those sorts of influence that you don’t realise. I wanted to paint big blue sky and I normally paint thunderous clouds.” Despite the more abstract overtones of the recent work, Paula doesn’t see herself moving in the direction of total abstraction. “Nature is my influence: the thing that makes me go out for a walk. What draws me to paint colours is in nature, the countryside… It’s that movement and the changing light. Cold wax painting evolves out of colour and textures. Some say they’re abstract, but there’s still that horizon line in there. The two approaches to painting are cross-fertilising. I still want to paint the more realistic landscapes, but with more movement in them.” As well as developing her technique, Paula tells me, “I’m running workshops on cold wax at the Craft House in Saltaire. I’ve also got Art in the Pen coming up, Art in the Garden and Art And, which is an exhibition at York Racecourse. I’ve got these three big events that I need to work toward.” With work as stunning as that on show at the Arts Trail, it will be well worth checking out her future shows and workshops. Bradford Dragonboat Festival 2018 The Bradford Dragonboat Festival 2018 returns to Roberts Park 22 -24 June, and it promises to be bigger, more vibrant, culturally embracing but most of all....fun! It has delivered in the past, and this year it promises to have much to see, do and to be a part of that people will continue talking about it until the next festival returns! This was certainly true of last year, so no reason to doubt it will achieve it again, especially given the passion and commitment both of the volunteers who have put the event together and the local businesses and community who help fund and deliver it. Despite what people may think, whilst this event is fully supported by the Council and many of their staff volunteer their services to it, it is not funded by the Council. Since its beginnings in 2015, the Bradford Dragonboat Festival has always aimed to achieve much more than just be an event with boats. The whole spectacle gives the ‘feel’ of an event organised by major event organisers with considerable funding behind them. But the big screens with live streaming of the races, the showcasing of local talent and the massive turnout and support of the event belie the might of the organisation behind it. It is made up of a handful of people who have pooled their knowledge and expertise to bring together the community and within 4 years (this will be their 4th year) they have not only taken

it to a professional level but have achieved recognition and respect nationally and internationally in circles that other organisers of 20 years have not been able to reach. Along the way they have brought people together, made physical activity more fun, helped the local economy and supported community cohesion helping to make a safer and stronger community. The Festival quite rightly boasts numerous firsts, such as having the UK’s first (and only) Youth Dragonboat Championship, but last year also saw them build a temporary harbour on the river Aire for safer loading and unloading of the boats. This alone sets them apart from many others in their dedication to make it the best experience for participants and visitors. Over the last 3 year’ delivery, the Festival has also helped raise £100,000 for local good causes. Teams racing on Friday and Saturday all have to raise money for the Lord Mayor’s Appeal whilst those racing on the Sunday can fundraise for a recognised charity of their own choice. Every penny of the funds raised by the teams goes to the charity.

This year sees an increase in the number of youth teams to 36 with event organisers having opened it up to any secondary school across the country. The Youth Championship is free to participate for children in education aged 11 to 19 (or up to 25 for those with disabilities). The addition of the Education and Careers Zone will provide an opportunity for businesses/organisations to reach out to the young people to showcase apprenticeship or career opportunities available to them. This links in very nicely to Bradford Manufacturing Week which will take place in October. Businesses are actively encouraged to book an exhibition stall. Perfect for a city that is noted as having the youngest population in the UK.

event where Muslim women wearing hijab are seen sitting in a boat with men paddling to win but, at the same time, when a team is struggling and calls for help...paddlers from other teams jump in and help them! The organisers actively encourage this and teams are told ‘you are many parts of one big team...if someone needs a hand ...jump in and help’. This alone is rare in competitive events. But, by doing this, the festival truly showcases all that is best in Bradford to the rest of the World. For further details regarding the Bradford Dragonboat Festival see bradforddragonboatfestival.co.uk

In a world that often appears to have moved in a direction where communities become segregated and individuals isolated or where you can only win by being truly competitive... this festival turns that on its head...at least for the three days it is there. It is a truly inclusive

Bingley Harriers & Athletic Club: 125 years in the making By Becky Weight

Bingley Harriers & Athletics Club is celebrating its 125th Anniversary this year. The club was formed in 1893 and organised cross country runs from October to March from J. Lee’s Coffee Tavern in Chapel Lane, Bingley. Rules at the time forbade stamping on the floor and smoking in the club rooms! In 1927 a race took place between the Harriers and Bradford Road Club Cyclists over a route designed to eliminate the advantage of wheels. The Harriers v Cyclists race is still popular today with over 200 competitors taking part in November each year. In 1950 the Club’s name added ‘& A.C.’ as activities other than cross-country were now catered for. Colours changed to current blue and white hoops and a ladies section formed which, despite concerns that cross-country running was unsuitable for women, attracted 43 in the first year. The likes of Bob Smith, Peter Dyer and Geoff Garnett guided the Club’s success leading to wins at local and regional levels. David Humphrey’s became the Club’s first international representative in 1957 followed, in national and international competitions by the likes of Steve Binns, Colin Moore, Dave Slater, Billy Padgett, Jimmy Ashworth, John Solly, Mick Hawkins, Angela Coates, Richard Nerurkar, Rob Jebb, and Victoria Wilkinson. Team successes include National Cross Country Champions

28

(1991), English Fell Champions, and various British Masters Relay (Road & Cross Country) Champions The club today has around 500 members from 8 to over 80, with all ages competing in all athletic disciplines including road, cross country, track & field, fell and trail. Cross country is still a strong thread from school and local league competitions up to national level, providing strong competition and often bringing together track, road and fell runners in the same race all enjoying the fast open running. Road running is a central activity for many members both for training and racing, be it the Lister Park Park Run, the Epilepsy Action Bradford 10k, or a national event. The club competes in track & field (including events like 100m sprint, high jump, and javelin) for juniors and seniors. And for those who enjoy the moors and mountains there are plenty of local fell and trail running opportunities, with regular ventures to more challenging Lakeland races. For those interested in athletics but who don’t want to, or perhaps no longer, run, throw or jump themselves there are plenty of opportunities in coaching, marshalling, event organisation, and officials duties. Several training sessions are available each week mainly on Tuesday and Thursday evenings and Saturday mornings. Whether your aim is a social trot to help keep fit or an event winning performance there will be something for you.

Science & Media Science & Media

Bradford Science Festival 9 - 22 July, National Science & Media Museum, City Park, The Broadway Bradford Science Festival returns this year with another weekend of sensational science. Taking place across the National Science and Media Museum, City Park and The Broadway, the festival dedicates more than two days to exciting live science activities anyone can get involved in. Festival goers can get under the bonnet of British engineered super car Bloodhound SSC, which is aiming to break the world land speed record by travelling at 1000 mph. Or they can meet battling robots, control model cars with mind-power alone, and even learn how to use science to trap a monster. With Timelord tech, bridge-building, jet engineering, careers and education advice, plus the return of festival favourite, Titan the Robot; the Bradford Science Festival is a packed weekend of fun. Robin Dark, Festival Director, said: “This year’s event will be building on the popularity of last year’s sensational science in the sunshine. We want to show that science is for everyone, no matter what age or background, and the line-up will do just that; from the car that’s attempting to be the first to travel at 1,000 miles per hour, to Timelord tech from the world of Doctor Who, and the return of Titan the Robot to City Park. “We’re working with a whole range of partners again, including City Park and The Broadway, which will be hosting some amazing battling robots. And as it’s the Year of Engineering we’ll have lots more activities with a real ‘wow’ factor, such as bridge-building and looking at the power of jets. If that’s not enough, we’ll be turning the mirror pool into a water-lab for all ages.” scienceandmediamuseum.org.uk

Action Replay 13 July – 30 September, National Science and Media Museum Broadcasters’ ambitions to make their coverage of sports the most immersive experience possible has resulted in a behind-the-scenes competition in technology and innovation that matches anything seen on the track and field. Action Replay at the National Science and Media Museum features some of the gamechanging innovations in technology, as well as examples of the more quirky ideas used by radio, TV and the internet to bring audiences closer to the sports they love. It includes neverexhibited-before equipment from the 1948 London Olympic Games, the camera that captured Britain’s first colour TV images, and a replica of Clare Balding’s unique Olympic shopping trolley. Sports broadcast breakthroughs highlighted in the exhibition include the UK’s first television Outside Broadcast which took place from the Epsom Derby in 1931; how the Wimbledon championships and snooker drove the introduction of colour television in the 1960s, and the way more recent equipment such as ‘Ref Cams’ and the explosion of e-sports continues the trend. Action Replay also looks at some of the more unusual sports-related broadcast icons, such as Paul the psychic Octopus and John Motson’s sheepskin coat, as well as exploring how sports equipment, stadiums and even rules have been adapted to accommodate audiences at home: from the pattern of the 1970s Telstar football and the colour of tennis balls, to venues fitted with finish line cameras or Skycams suspended overhead. Action Replay has worked with partners including BBC Sport, Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Museum, Sky Sports and the National Football Museum to show how broadcasters work ‘In the Stadium’, ‘Behind the Scenes’, and ‘Around the World’. Featured objects that have become part of sports broadcasting history include the CPS Emitron camera used at the 1948 London Olympics, which has never been exhibited before, and the Philips PC-60 camera used for the UK’s first colour broadcasts from the 1967 Wimbledon Championships. Action Replay runs at the National Science and Media Museum from 13 July – 30 September and is free to enter. scienceandmediamuseum.org.uk

Cabaret Saltaire 2 June, Caroline St Social Club, Saltaire

Walking down Caroline Street in Saltaire, as you pass the boarded up former St. John’s Ambulance training centre, and just before the allotments you’ll come across the unprepossessing 1960s weather stained pre-fab that is the Caroline Club. It may not match and therefore fit in aesthetically with the surrounding architecture of the mill and its characterful terraced streets, but don’t be deceived by appearances. Inside rests a black box concert room that really is the gem in the crown for Saltaire entertainment. It would be fair to say that the club was on its uppers back in 2010, with a reducing (and ageing) membership, and entertainment reserved only to the undying bingo calls and a weekly member’s night with real club ‘turns’. Then along came Cabaret Saltaire with its quarterly musical/comedy variety nights, which opened up the venue, and all it has to offer to a new and surprised audience. Not long after in its trail followed the Live Room, Salsa Nights and countless more regular events which have helped to secure Saltaire as a centre of Bradford entertainment, and inevitably given a much needed financial boost to the club’s coffers.

34

Friday 29th of June sees the next offering of Cabaret Saltaire at the Caroline Club. Now in its eighth year, this popular event can be said to be firmly embedded within the Saltaire community, drawing a regular audience of members from the locale and beyond, with the one common expectation – to have a good laugh. And a good laugh is the key ingredient at the heart of this

organisation’s aims. Utilising the unique splendour of the club’s concert room 1960’s décor (original revolving glitterball and red velvet curtains included), the shows play on the working men’s club theme, somewhat reminiscent of the Wheeltappers and Shunters of 1970’s Granada TV fame. Hosted by the irrepressible Squinty McGinty – agent to the stars, played by Steve Huison (probably better known for his screen roles such as The Full Monty, Dnnerladies, The Royle Family and boasting a wide, and somewhat tongue-incheek variety of acts over the years ranging from acrobatic dancers, chanteuses, hypnotists, swiss yodellers, fire eaters, masochistic fakirs, world class accordionists, Edinburgh Fringe rejects, Operatics, faded soap stars, has-been club turns, dodgy magic, a psychic goat, up and coming local acts and bands, a four-foot Johnny Cash and a charity fundraising meat raffle (don’t ask)! June’s extravaganza lives up to its promise with the usual variety of acts headlining with Barbara Nice, rounding off the evening and club theme rather fittingly. Peter Kay fans may remember Barbara as Holy Mary in Phoenix Nights. Apparently Mr Kay spotted Barbara’s act and wrote the part especially for her. Tickets available at £12.50 for non-members or £9.50 for club and Cabaret Saltaire members. Available behind the bar or online at www. wegottickets.

Simon Heginbotham: An obituary We’re sure many of our readers will have been saddened by the news that Simon Heginbotham, organiser of the popular Saltaire Live events, tragically passed away on 20 April. His funeral on 17 May demonstrated the warmth of feeling towards him and the impact he and his events have had on the area. Eddie Lawler reflects on his funeral and pays tribute with a poem for Simon.

Simon Heginbotham’s funeral day on 17th May was what he might have called a success and a sell-out. The United Reformed Church (capacity of several hundred) was packed out for a service led by local Minister Caroline Andrews and Rev. Mark Bratton of Berkswell, a long-term friend of Simon. Mourners included direct family (Mother and brother Rob, who was mainly responsible for organising the day) and friends from near and far, including the full membership of the Sligo-based Celtic band Dervish who have become packed-house regulars at Simon’s gigs. It included a farewell “Letter to Friends” from Simon, recounting how he had combated bouts of depression over 20 years, which were now so severe they were “just too much to face”. It was his “considered decision” to take his own life, not “some heat of the moment action”. The event evoked both laughter and tears. Prof.

36

Philip Shipway recounted incidents from Simon’s life which helped to define him as unique and inimitable. Cathy Jordan (lead singer of Dervish) sang an Irish lament “The Old Churchyard” and moved the whole congregation to stunned silence. After a private cremation, guests then packed Victoria Hall for a reception followed by a concert provided by English folk-star Rob Boden, members of Salsa Celtica, local singer Bella Gaffney whom Simon had mentored in recent years, and finally Dervish themselves who had the dancers thumping the Hall floor with their feet and the rest clapping in rhythm, a fitting farewell. It was moving to see and hear Rob Heginbotham as MC – a shorter and more rotund version of his brother but with the same commanding timbre of voice, who promised to complete Simon’s bookings and to assure the audience that Saltaire Live would not cease with Simon’s departure.

A poem for Simon... Sad news came in sunshine Here in the strangest of springs When after the grim grey chill All colours bloomed at once And wove a wreath for you To tunes belted out by blackbirds – In gold of celandine, daffs and dandelions, gorse In white of wood anemone and daisy. Add forsythia, pink fingers of magnolia And the first clumps of bluebells. Well, oh well. We thought you had no demons ’Cos you could dance like one Never knew you feared the dark Given your own in-built PA Which, lion-like, could boom and bark. On green-blue days of summer You were lion-turned-keeper there behind the stumps Growling courage to the bowler’s arm And best of all, on longer nights You conjured wizards to our doorstep Wand in hand To thrill and to enchant. We’re going to miss that magic, true, But we will not forget that you Enriched our lives. Thank you Eddie Lawler
