Iwakura by Ambra Kumbalatara Arachchige, age 16 (under-18 category winner and overall winner) The Iwakura Mission was a voyage undertaken by Japanese diplomats in the early 1870s, in the hope of studying Western industries to better their own nation, and to introduce Japan as a competitor. In 1872, they visited Salts Mill in Saltaire. The cobbled and worn ground felt foreign Beneath my cracked geta. Each groove of the smooth stone fractured my journey, As I gingerly teetered through the winding paths, desperate To follow the group ahead of me. In the distance a voice shouts, ‘And here is the famous Salts Mill…an industrial establishment which-’ At least that is all I ascertained. His harsh accent created a garbled, indistinct speech, We all nodded politely; half-expecting to be moved to the next faceless building, When I finally glanced above and caught site of the colossal monument of man’s creation. This towering expanse of stone and glass stretched alongside a tranquil canal, And at that moment, it was alive. Every few seconds it breathed out clouds of grey smoke that billowed out into an overpowering fog; Which encased the vicinity in a haze of heat and sulphur. Through hacking coughs and watering eyes we could see the hundreds of people furiously working, Their aching, sweaty bodies mingling with the smoky haze and the unyielding din of factory work to create a complex cacophony; A sensual overdrive for the untrained mind. I staggered to the banks of the canal, gazing at the ever-changing reflection of the mill. The water was dull, muddy, polluted from all of the chemicals and sickness. But then and there I saw the beauty of our missionBeing milled through the West, observing the developments of collaboration, Far from a warm, natural home and into the world’s spotlight. We thought the world was barely ready to see our beautiful landscapes of green hills and fertile soil, Our testaments to a rich history and architecture to amaze the mundane western mind-set, But is Japan ready for the world?

9

Iwakura by Ambra Kumbalatara Arachchige cont... ‘This way, people!’ Our party quietly shuffled on, meeting a sudden burst of green. Spindly beech trees were outstretched above us, their intertwined arms creating complex shadow On the dense patches of young grass beneath us. The crisp, clean air and brown-tinged leaves became our haven, and in the distance, The smoke and faint cries created a steady pulse of this sleepy village.

I was here as a mere visitor, but to understand the changes and sacrifices of the people, For one day mine would do the same. The wan, fatigued faces of these workers are no different to the others seen in this arduous journey, But together they accomplish something greater that would cement this small village Its rightful place in history.

Glenway Experience by Ira Dalby, age 9 (under-18 category runner-up) On a glorious day we went on the tramway, Up to Shipley Glen ‘How about that then!’ Said I, as the tram set off. We waved ‘hello’ to the passers-by, They waved back in the blink of an eye. We reached the top and had to stop, At the traditional sweet shop, Yorkshire mixers, soft rock, midget gems, we’ll take the lot, Enough muckment to make your teeth rot. Now onwards and upwards to the giant stones, And to get Dales ice cream in double cones. This is the life up in the fresh air, Oh, look over there is our home Saltaire!

10

The Aire by Mark Taylor Batty (adult winner) The rain pleads down over sandstone grassy Dales; Tight stone walls, cudding sheep, sheer open land. Space pelted sodden, sheeted grey skyfall, Rained and soaked, wrung and rinsed downstream Where becks released from stillness skip gleefully And all shove down, collude to make the Aire.

The eager rush steadies as it heads around Skipton, Cutting at the turns, rinsing through low leaves, Splaying into the depth of the valley, Playing in brief eddies to wait and catch up, Before gliding under the canal aqueduct To corner and face the home run to Saltaire.

By the bolted boating hut, shift by Hirst mill, Swish low, stream bold, thick, deep like soup To the Boathouse Inn, and nonchalant ducks, Where the heavy river swells like a distended belly And bloats sated to claim the summer’s shore Spilling at the path in the park.

The river would kiss the canal here by the thin green bridge, Were it not for the pub, a gooseberry in between. The mill then shouldering the canal away to Shipley The river veering to roar its claim over the weir, And farewell down dirty to Otley Road bridge. Then confidently on to beat that canal to Leeds.

Theatre & Performance

11 September, Dandelion Cafe, Saltaire

Saltaire Archive recently acquired a whole new collection of letters, papers, objects and ephemera that had belonged to Isabel Salt - granddaughter of Sir Titus Salt. Isabel was a Suffragist and opposed to the methods of the Suffragettes whilst campaigning both within Saltaire and elsewhere for votes for women. A very first exhibition about her work and the wider campaign for women’s suffrage will be held from 10 - 6 pm on Saturday 4 and Sunday 5 August in the Salt Building, Victoria Road, Saltaire. The Great Yorkshire Chorus In recent years there has been a huge revival in the choir scene in the UK, thanks largely to momentum created by Gareth Malone. His many TV shows such as The Choir have shown normal people having life changing experiences through singing in a group with others.

In September, a brand new contemporary choir will launch in Saltaire, called the Great Yorkshire Chorus. This new group, led by local choir director Maria Mullin, hopes to build on the singing revival and bring something fresh and forward thinking to the local community and musical sphere in the region. The Great Yorkshire Chorus is an open access choir that anyone over 18 can join. There are no auditions and no previous singing experience in needed. The new choir will sing an eclectic mix of music, including pop, soul, gospel and more. They are aspiring to be one of the most innovative and uplifting vocal groups in the region. The choir is the brainchild of Maria Mullin, a local professional musician with a background in leading choirs. Maria has previously lead a number of choirs in the community, schools and workplaces and has directed ensembles supporting famous artists such as Leona Lewis, Russell Watson and G4. Maria says, “The Great Yorkshire Chorus is an amazing opportunity for people to enjoy the challenges and reward of singing in a choir. Our new choir aims to be relevant and accessible to ordinary people. We hope to attract many people who have not sung before, as well as experienced singers. It’s going to be an extraordinary journey and we just can’t wait to get started.” The benefits of singing for health and wellbeing have been well documented in recent studies. Regular singing has been shown to hugely reduce stress and improve mental health. The social aspect of being part of a choir is also a great benefit. “The social side of the choir will be massively important,” says Maria. “We hope that choir members will forge great new friendships

and we will be holding regular social events alongside our rehearsal schedule.” The choir is now preparing for their launch night on Tuesday 11 September, 7.45pm at Victoria Hall, Saltaire. The launch night is free to attend, though places must be booked through their website at www.greatyorkshirechorus.co.uk More information about becoming a choir member can also be found on their website. Following the launch night, the choir will hold weekly rehearsals on Tuesday nights at Victoria Hall. “We are delighted to have Victoria Hall as our home”, says Maria. “It’s such a beautiful venue with a rich cultural heritage, at the heart of Saltaire Village. The acoustics are brilliant and we couldn’t have found a more fitting place to launch the Great Yorkshire Chorus.” The choir already have their first performances lined up. Their first local event is booked in for October and now they are planning performances for the Christmas season. Anyone interested in joining the choir should get in touch via their website at www. greatyorkshirechorus.co.uk The Great Yorkshire Chorus can also be found on Facebook.

Shipley Little Theatre: Saltaire Round the World Safari 9 September, Roberts Park, Saltaire

Have you ever fancied going on safari and meeting fascinating animals from around the world? What if you could do this without having to go further than, say, Roberts Park? You can do just that as part of the Saltaire Festival, which will bring animals from every continent to the park. And there are no safety concerns with these wild animals, as they’re all puppets! I asked safari director Peter Jeffrey-Bourne to tell me a little more about it. “It’s a show I’ve done before,” he tells me, “and it works very well. I’ve done it in stately homes’ grounds, in National Trust forests… all sorts of places! We’re going on an expedition with Professor Davina Attleburrell and her assistant, Mike ‘Snakebite’ Irwine, expert wildlife tracker. They will take safari-goers around Roberts Park and they’re going to encounter animals from all over the world – but they’re all puppets! However, the wildlife information is all accurate: it’s as if they’re on the safari – a safari adventure and it’s a family show.” I ask him about the animals and Peter continues, “There’ll be everything from meerkats on the African plains through to orangutans from Borneo

and animals from Madagascar. There’s the giant panda from China and the Canadian lynx. “The animals might feel a little bit out of place and startled by the audience, so we’ll have to keep our distance. The audience will have binoculars, so they’ll be able to watch from a distance. Some of the animals are quite shy, so you’ve got to be cautious, but I think they’ll get along well with Saltaire!” A team of puppeteers will be in place and the safari will stop in various places for the animals to emerge from the undergrowth. Following last year’s Saltaire Festival performance of Making Light by local legend Eddie Lawler, Peter comments, “We aim to bring something different to the Festival every time. Last time there was a proper theatre piece indoors in the Caroline Club, whereas this is a bit different – a promenade performance. We’re going to try to bring something new to the table every year.” The Saltaire Round the World Safari will be heading out in Roberts Park at 11am and 2:30pm on Saturday 8 September and at the same times on Sunday 9 September. The safari is free but pay-as-you-feel contributions would be welcome.

Discussing their upcoming single, the band stated: “It’s about that private time of solitude in between the chaos where you choose whatever it is you want to do, whether it be smoking or something else. The moment where you empty your mind from all thoughts and just experience coexisting with someone or something that gets your vibe”.
