Cottingley Heritage Centre Cottingley has achieved fame throughout the world for the activities of two young girls who, towards the end of and after the First World War, claimed to have photographed fairies at the stream near their home. They fooled many influential people, including the celebrated creator of Sherlock Holmes, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, a deceit which lasted half a century until one of the participants admitted that all, except the last photograph, had been faked. Cottingley, however, has more to its history than a children’s escapade which got out of hand. Like many other villages, at one time, Cottingley had a thriving industrial community with tanning, coal mining and wool processing activities within its bounds. Cottingley has had some remarkable people among its residents and can claim to have had an involvement in the French Revolution, through William Wickham, a presence in Dr. David Livingstone’s Zambesi expedition, through Richard Thornton, and an involvement in a scientific discovery, through John Gillies Priestley. All these were either born or resided in Cottingley Hall. Cottingley can also claim literary achievement through poet James Allan Mackereth who lived in the village for over 40 years and who was awarded a Civil List Pension for his services to literature. Within the Parish, Cottingley has 14 Grade II Listed Buildings including some from the 17th Century and the Town Hall, opened in 1865 and unique at the time for incorporating a free church, a school, a Mechanics Institute, a library and even a bank.
6
So Cottingley can rightly claim to be a village of industry, history, fantasy and culture. Over the years Cottingley Village History Society have collected many documents, photographs, maps and records relating to the village which have now been gathered together and deposited in Cottingley Heritage Centre, so that they may be preserved for future generations and viewed by the general public. Visitors to the village and residents are welcome to inspect the documents and displays and perhaps research ancestors who may have lived in the village. Cottingley Heritage Centre, which is supported by Bingley Town Council and Shipley Area Committee, is located in the Library at Cottingley Town Hall, Main Street, Cottingley, BD16 1SR and will be opening for the 2019 season on Saturday 6 April at 10am and will open every Saturday morning thereafter until the end of September. Salts Walks and Talks: Meet the Guides It all began in April 1996 when Maria Glot and Anne Heald got together at the Saltaire Tourist Information Centre to offer curious visitors guided walks and talks about Saltaire. Salts Walks was created with a great set of guides including the late great local historian, Clive Woods. In 2001 Salts Walks was lucky to be joined by Harriet Townsend, playwright, drama teacher and blue badge guide from Oxford. She put the guides in costume and helped develop the characters that are seen guiding tourists and visitors today. All the guides are individuals and have their unique style, opinions and character. They interact with each other, just like in real life. That’s what makes the tours so special. Maria Glot runs Salts Walks and is Ellin Dooley, a common mill worker. Maria is a long-term resident of Saltaire, has worked in the tourist industry for many years and is famous for being Bradford District’s first tourism officer in 1980. An enthusiastic local historian, she is a member of the Saltaire WI, the Saltaire Traders and supports the Saltaire Village Society, Saltaire Festival and Saltaire Inspired. Her different collection of fascinating facts and anecdotes bring Saltaire history to life in talks and after dinner speeches. Maria’s costumed character, Mrs Ellin Dooley, is as common as muck, lives in an ordinary worker’s house with her husband Henry, 12 children and another on the way. Sally Clegg is Mrs Caroline Hill, wife of Colonel Thomas Henry Hill, Head of Security. A former journalist, Sally used her spare time to learn foreign languages. She now speaks French, German, Spanish and Italian as well as a little Greek and Catalan. She trained as a guide at Harewood House, Leeds, before joining Salts Walks in 2009. Sally is also secretary to Bradford Circle for Foreign Languages, a group that meets in Eldon Place, a building once owned by Sir Titus Salt. Mrs Caroline Hill and Saltaire’s security chief, Colonel Hill live in the second biggest
8
house in the village. A mother of four, she nevertheless leads a lonely existence as her husband spends much of his time in the watchtower above their home looking out for anyone who breaks the strict rules of Saltaire. She longs for her former life in India, where she was born and brought up. Sheila Landsell is Matron Sarah Turner, the first matron of Sir Titus Salt’s hospital. Sheila is an actor and singer, a member of West Riding Opera and the Glen Singers. She appeared in After the War is Over in 2012, playing a First World War nursing sister for Saltaire UNESCO World Heritage Site and most recently she played Sister Milton in Not About Heroes. Sheila is currently guiding for Salts Walks, playing the character of Matron Sarah Turner, a trained Nightingale nurse. The first matron at Salt’s Hospital, her mantra in life is ‘to purge or not to purge?’ Sheila’s specialism is 19th century medicine. Joanne Crowther is Mrs Pollie Toothill wife of Sylvester Toothill, accountant in the Institute. Joanne Crowther (aka Lucienne de Ville) is a singer specialising in French chansons, jazz and swing in restaurants, private parties and corporate events. She also works in schools promoting science and engineering via a range of projects, some of which have received national and international recognition. Her team J & J Projects also works with the British Council in Paris and has delivered projects at schools in over 10 regions of France.

Pollie Toothill, born plain old Mary Ackroyd in Bradford Moor, changed her name and married Sylvester, who turns out to be quite a rum character. Joanne has unearthed some interesting information about Sylvester, which had Pollie known about, she might not have married him. Yet he does have one advantage - his father Edward, is the Curator at the Saltaire Institute, now known as Victoria Hall, where they live in the Curator’s basement apartment with her inlaws. Legend has it that Pollie was a bit of a chanteuse and that she used to entertain the villagers during performances at The Institute. Sylvester featured in the local press on numerous occasions and it seems he led Pollie a merry dance living in different locations plus several scrapes with the law. Jenny Dalby is Martha Brown, servant to the famous Brontë family for more than 22 years. Jenny started out at Wilson’s School of Speech & Drama in Shipley at the age of 13, having found her passion. She then went onto study Performing Arts & Drama at Halifax School of Integrated Arts. Having joined the Priestley Centre in Bradford at age 18 she performed in many productions there and with the Hebden Bridge Little Theatre where she scooped Best Supporting Actress
Award in 2011. In 2017 Jenny moved to Saltaire with her family and started to take a great interest in its history. In summer 2018 she heard about Martha Brown, the Brontës’ faithful servant, coming to live in Saltaire with her sister Ann Binns on Victoria Road. Jenny had a light bulb moment and thought it would be wonderful to bring her character back to life and so marry the history of Haworth and Saltaire in a guided walk All the guides are involved in not just preserving the history, but making history in Saltaire. They fully support the UNESCO world heritage site and contribute to community events, like the Festival and Saltaire Inspired events. They make a regular monthly contribution for the preservation and restoration of the Grade 1 Listed United Reformed Church. They also provide resources for the education market, as well as tailored guided walks and education packs for primary schools. Salts Walks guides have researched real characters who lived and worked in Saltaire during Sir Titus Salt’s time and go into costume to share historical fact, have fun andimprovise for groups of every type and age. www. saltairevillageexperience.co.uk

The guide will include over 60 businesses representing the districts best cafes, bars, restaurants and local producers. Aimed at local residents looking to broaden their horizons as well as visitors, it is also being extended to also include local attractions and annual events. The printed guide will be free to pick up from all participating venues and key visitor destinations across the district, with more than 10,000 available. Visitors to the website will be able to sign up to a monthly mailing list to receive exclusive news and offers from

Haigh Simpson, director of Festival Publications said, “We really wanted to do something special to build on the success of the previous two guides. Everyone we spoke to loved them and they are a fantastic entry point for anyone wanting to find out more about the districts food and drink scene. We felt it was important to build an online platform to sustain that interest for the benefit of everyone featured in the guide...and for Bradford!”
the Eat:Drink team, who will also be working on a range of merchandise and goodies designed for the Bradford foodie.
The team are working with local filmmakers to produce video content to tie in with the launch and are on the lookout for writers with a passion for food and drink to join the review team. Expenses are paid and there’s a free meal in it too!
The project is a collaboration between Bradford-based publishing agency Festival Publications and Fox Duo design, who also produce the Bradford Review and the Saltaire Review.

UNESCO City of Film to mark 10 year anniversary Bradford UNESCO City of Film marks its 10th anniversary this year with a series of celebrations, events and activities across the District. The organisation’s director, David Wilson tells The Review what’s in store, “It was on June 8th 2009 that we received the incredible news that we’d been awarded the prestigious designation as a UNESCO City of Film. Not only that but we were the first English city to join the network and the first City of Film so it was a bit of a double celebration, “ reflects David who has been the director of the project since 2011. “From the start, we saw the potential of joining the creative cities network. Ten years later we’re working alongside cities like Rome, Sydney and Qingdao in China so it’s really propelled us onto a world stage in terms of being able to develop shared cultural, educational and business opportunities for Bradford.” When Bradford joined the network there were 37 creative cities and now there are 180 from 72 countries, all sharing a collective mission to place creativity at the heart of their strategy for local economic and social development. It’s a plan of action that Bradford UNESCO City of Film has adopted wholeheartedly. This is reflected in the diversity of their flagship projects in areas including: community, education, business, film and festivals.
16
“We’re a small team so we make the most of the strong partnerships we have across the District, from working with individuals leading small community projects, to large organisations who help deliver longer term projects in education and business, “ says David, “so in marking the 10th anniversary,
we’re celebrating and developing long term projects as well as starting new ones. There’s also plenty of events to enjoy in the programme and I hope that everyone joins with us to celebrate.” And even with a quick glance, the programme lives up to this aspiration, with many events also being free to attend. For anyone interested in film there are a series of exclusive talks on life working in the film and TV industry. The series “Screen Talk”, running throughout the year, will host guest speakers who have worked on productions including Top Gear, Peaky Blinders, Ackley Bridge and Eastenders. The programme also incorporates three festivals including a new Smart Phone Film Festival which is a first for Bradford. And there are film production workshops, film screenings, exhibitions and even swing dancing, for those who thought film-based events are all sedentary experiences. The 10th anniversary is also an opportunity to focus on Bradford UNESCO City of Film’s wider agendas for change. The programme features an education symposium which will consider the impact of mobile technology on teaching and learning and to mark International Women’s Day, a debate in partnership with BBC Radio Leeds to discuss the stubborn gender inequalities that still exist in the film and TV industry. “There’s enough to keep us busy for the year,” smiles David full of enthusiasm,” and the good thing is it’s making us think about the next ten years so watch this space..” www.bradford.film

Vintage Springtime in Saltaire
Shows & Exhibitions
Yorkshire Games Festival
30 March, 9.30am - 4pm, Victoria Hall Rose & Brown have been bringing vintage into the heart of Saltaire for eleven years, with five Saltaire Vintage Home & Fashion Fairs a year at Victoria Hall. The Fair returns on Saturday 30 March and fills the beautiful listed interior of the hall with nearly 50 stalls of genuine vintage fashion and homewares from the 1920’s to the 1980’s. A specially compiled soundtrack of cool tunes spanning all of the vintage decades is a perfect backdrop for a Springtime browse of one-off vintage fashion finds, stylish homewares, items of small furniture and curious collectables. The fairs are dedicated to true vintage and are a celebration of the excitement of discovering pieces, which have history, are well designed and original, and will not be found on the high street. The event is back in the Summer on 29 June. The fair runs from 9.30am – 4pm. Entry is £3 full price or £2 for concessions on the door, with under 16’s in free. Tea room provided by Interlude.

The Saltaire Record & Retro Fair, Saturday 9th March, Caroline Club When you walk into the first Saltaire Record Fair of the year in March, only the eagle-eyed of you will notice any difference from last year’s highly successful fairs. You’ll still be able to find a healthy bunch of stalls chocked full of rarities, bargains and records you never knew you wanted; you’ll still be able to take a left turn into pop culture memorabilia; you’ll still be in the Caroline Club on Caroline Street; and you’ll still be able to do all that to a great soundtrack of live DJs. What you might not notice is that the Record Fair is now under new ownership. Previously run by Rose & Brown Vintage (those of the excellent vintage fair that takes place in Victoria Hall), the stewardship is now in the hands of Shipley’s own Record Club. The Record Club is a long running community group formed in 2011, connecting local folk through a shared love of music on vinyl. Their events on the first Saturday of every month at The Triangle on Bradford Road in Shipley attract a dedicated crowd of music lovers but other than the odd pop-up event around Saltaire and a regular show on BCB Radio, this is the first time it has moved into fresh pastures. “Our involvement with Saltaire Record Fair had
Theatre & PAArtserformance Music
Same Name, Same Game, New Beginnings always been as eager punters and providing occasional DJ support, so when we were offered the chance to take over the reins of the fair itself, it honestly seemed like a no-brainer,” said Record Club’s Tony Painter, “We felt it was a great opportunity to use our passion for music, and especially vinyl, to help others who share the same love and to connect further with the local community.” Help is an important word, it seems. “The Record Club isn’t a business,” Tony explained, “we’re not doing this to make money for ourselves. The club’s members have committed to contributing profits to local charitable causes, particularly in promoting music and music appreciation.” So if you’re in the Saltaire area on 9th March, head on down to the Caroline Club, pick up that record your collection is missing and help the community. The Saltaire Record & Retro Fair is on Saturday 9th March at the Caroline Club on Caroline Street, from 10am to 3.30pm. Entry is 50p. Bill Ryder Jones 12 February, 8pm, Salt Beer Factory English multi-instrumentalist/composer/singer/ songwriter/producer Bill Ryder-Jones began his music career in 1996 as the lead guitarist for popular Hoylake-based psychedelic pop outfit the Coral, with whom he spent 12 years before embarking on a solo career that saw him composing scores for films like 2011’s Bed and 2012’s Piggy and releasing more song-based solo albums like 2011’s ambitious If... and 2016’s acclaimed West Kirby County Primary. In addition to his own work, Ryder-Jones has also amassed an impressive résumé as a producer and session musician, working on records for acts like the Wytches and Arctic Monkeys. Upon his departure from the Coral in 2008, the Merseyside native began recording a series of songs and instrumental demos. Influenced by the likes of Ennio Morricone, Radiohead’s Jonny Greenwood, and the pastoral English folk of the late Nick Drake, Ryder-Jones provided the score for the 2009 short film Leave Taking, which was directed by longtime friend Laurence Easeman. The compositions made up the bulk of his debut EP, A Leave Taking Soundtrack, and were followed by further forays into film soundtracks for It’s Natural to Be Afraid (2010), Bed (2011),

and Piggy (2012). In November 2011, RyderJones released his full-length debut for Domino, If..., which was based on Italo Calvino’s 1979 novel If on a Winter’s Night a Traveler. The intimate and far more song-oriented A Bad Wind Blows in My Heart followed in 2013. Over the next few years, his studio efforts were focused on producing other artists like Hooton Tennis Club, the Wytches, and Saint Saviour, while he also became a touring member of Arctic Monkeys. Moving from the more minimalist folk style of his previous album, Ryder-Jones sought a heavier, more band-oriented sound for his follow-up. Written in his childhood bedroom at his mother’s home and recorded in Liverpool, 2016’s West Kirby County Primary was a deeply affecting album that delved into the singer’s personal life. Returning in 2018, Ryder-Jones again looked inward on the introspective Yawn, a low-key guitar album whose themes revolved around everyday life situations.
